Ch28 – Scuffle with a Cold Vampire
Honoka opens her eyes, blinks as she scans the silence of her room. A small smile grows on her face before she slips out of her blanket, quick changes into something not her pyjamas and she was at her window already, transforms into a bat to fly into the night.
Alright. Here's to patrol day…most probably around 58? I lost count how many times I successfully sneaked out.
Honoka-bat scratches her head as she makes a scrunched up expression. It only lasted a second as her happy-go-lucky nature took over.
Math and numbers was never my strong point anyways!
She flaps her wings more as she flew higher and further from the safety of her house, and a little further from the safety of her district.
Time for Hero Honoka to go about making sure no one needs saving from those Cold Vampires! And maybe saving someone who needs saving~!
Honoka-bat cheers in her head, bringing forth positivity, for tonight being a safe one.
When Honoka-bat reaches a particularly wide but quiet street, which makes sense considering its 12midnight, she lands on her feet after a smooth transformation back to human. "Hmm…"
The gingerhead hums thoughtfully as she observes the scene – closed shop houses, only two to three civilians up and about to hurry home, tired from a day's work she's sure. Honoka steps and hops a few roofs to patrol further on this street she hasn't been to before. Only looking back a few times to make sure she kind of remembers her way back.
Three low roofs and one high roof with a…er…bigger chimney than the other?
Honoka sweatdrops at the roofs.
Ah, I'll find a way back later!
Honoka smiles to herself and makes her way further in from above the grounds. If there was one thing to like about going on patrols in the night despite risking a lengthy nag from Umi, Maki, Yukiho and all of her family or risking her life; it was this serenity of the silent night and the beauty of the soft swirling clouds in the dark of the night.
Not sure if it's because I'm vampire. But mmm~ Night walks are so calming and fun! It'd be even better if I could bring a friend along~
Honoka entertains herself with idle thoughts, staring at the bricks and skies more than the streets right now.
Umi-chan and Maki-chan and Yukiho would be too stick in the mud about safety to come along though…
Honoka has a lightbulb moment as she stops walking. "Oh!" That came out too loud, Honoka throws her hands over her mouth, eyes her surroundings quickly before hunching her back to whisper in her mind.
Maybe Kotori-chan would be more inclined to hang out with me at midnight~ hehe~
The gingerhead grins at the sheer idea of inviting her human friend on a brisk walk above the roofs and under the at times starry skies and at times starless night like today. The kind ash-brunette doesn't seem to be the type to say no to such adventures.
I'll protect her if anything comes up! Besides…This is why I'm on my patrol duties and mission to change Cold Vampires!
Honoka pumps both her fists in front of her chest.
So that Kotori-chan can hop on roofs with me!
Honoka pauses for a moment after that declaration, scratching her cheek bashfully.
Or…so that anyone can hop on roofs and walk on the streets without fear of Cold Vampires-
"AAAAHHHH-!"
A scream pierced the quiet of the night when Honoka was least expecting it, and it cut off midway which Honoka too did not like. The patrolling vampire spins back to face the direction of the cry, blue eyes hunting and searching for the scene. The victim. The-
There! Oh gods, no.
Honoka was met with the scene of a human male struggling on the ground, kicking hopelessly while his mouth was covered by that of another figure who clearly had no issue with holding down a grown man with one hand on the victim's wrists and another on the victim's mouth.
Don't attack yet, don't attack yet. Don't bite him. Don't kill him. Don't-
Honoka dashes towards the scene. No care for stealth as she kicks off the roof when she was two houses away shouting desperately, "STOP! DON'T HURT HIM!"
The Cold Vampire doesn't react as he applied more force to the victim's arms, Honoka swears she might have hurt a bone crack but she doesn't want to find out from those arms going limp. She intercepts by hitting the Cold Vampire's arms upwards.
Surprised at the entry of someone who could actually lift him, the Cold Vampire finally veers his head towards Honoka, seething an unspoken "what". Honoka gulps. This Cold Vampire wasn't like the others she had encountered so far.
This Cold Vampire was hungry.
And a Cold Vampire blinded by thirst…doesn't hear reason.
Honoka does her best to not let fear take over her. Her legs might have shook for a bit, but she kept the grip on the Cold Vampire's hands till he let go of the victim who fell back to the ground shivering in fear, unable to scream, unable to run.
Dang it. What do I do? What do I do?
Honoka panics but no hero was ever given time to panic. The Cold Vampire swings his arm up, breaking free from Honoka's grip. He breathes out threateningly, "Vampire… I'll kill you!"
Wha-
The Cold Vampire strikes at Honoka who barely had time to raise her hands in defence. So she gets hit off balance and falls back. Not being in front of the human, the Cold Vampire pounces for the human.
"No!" Honoka cries as she tackles the Cold Vampire to the floor rolling a few metres away from the human who almost had teeth sink into him.
"Guraaah!" The Cold Vampire growls, throwing Honoka off him.
Honoka hurries to her feet, taking a defensive stance.
Even if they won't listen, I have to try! But how do I get his attention? Or get the victim away. Ahhh.
The Cold Vampire glared at the vampire that kept interrupting his meal through darkened, thirsty eyes. Not giving Honoka time to think enough, he lunges at Honoka with a feral snarl.
"Ack!" Honoka was brought to the ground but she retaliates by reflex, kicking the Cold Vampire stomach, throwing him sideways as she rolled to her feet once again.
Fast paced battles when it isn't a lioness or jaguar or-
The Cold Vampire was snarling and rushing Honoka again already. The gingerhead barely had time to catch her breath and she was knocked into the air by the other vampire's swinging of his arms at full force.
"Gaa- Uggghhk." Honoka coughs, the air knocked out of her lungs the same time she hits the floor. Panting, the adrenaline rushing through her veins, unbeknownst to the vampire herself, her eyes flickered as she pushed herself off the ground.
Got to…save..!
Honoka's azure eyes glowed an overpowering shade of blue in the night, one that usually would demand and capture any attention. However, the Cold Vampire was far too crazed and hungry to be intimidated.
Having already fallen to his innate instincts, the Cold Vampire lunged at the civilian on the ground that was shaking, backing away uselessly with silent, horrified tears.
Without a second thought, Honoka kicks off the ground with a hurried curse to make it in time.
TEAR.
The sound of flesh coming off and blood trickling to the cold floor permeated the empty street. The Cold Vampire's dulled out eyes moves up shakily to look into flickering, deadly blue.
"Leave…Don't hurt-"
The Cold Vampire let out a bloodcurdling screech and made to strike Honoka again, but Honoka was faster. She grabs the arm the Cold Vampire throws at her, twists the arm till the Cold Vampire groans in pain and she steps down on the Cold Vampire's left leg.
"GYAHHH!"
I'm sorry.
Ignoring the blood dripping from her right forearm, she tightens the pull on the Cold Vampire's twisted arm to make sure the unstable vampire won't be able to attempt any attacks on the civilian tonight. Honoka clenches her teeth tight as she does so, hating to do it.
"Don't hurt yourself…and innocent people!" Honoka throws the injured Cold Vampire metres away from the still shaking in fear civilian and her.
The Cold Vampire lets out a weak snarl and scampers off, his groans of agony echoing and filling the chilling night the gingerhead thought was peaceful until…this.
Honoka lets out a tired breath. "Ugh…"
Honoka trudges over to the civilian. The guy pointed at her arm with shaking uncontrollably fingers, eyes wide as saucers before fainting.
Honoka worries and reached out to maybe check on the civilian, but then she notices her arm and understood why the civilian fainted. Her right arm was a deep, open would; her muscle visible and blood still freshly spilling out, kind of, as her regeneration is kicking in already.
"I hope he's okay…" The tired vampire mutters; upset thick in her tone as she thinks about the Cold Vampire she hurt the same way he did to her…and more.
Honoka rips her shirt's sleeve and wraps it around her wound. "Ugh- It stings… But…I won't…cry…"
Honoka blinks rapidly and hard, trying her hardest to not let the tears escape. She felt like she was weak and that it's her fault the Cold Vampire had to be injured by her and the civilian was now unconscious. She didn't think she should be crying when she should be trying even harder to reach her goals of peace between vampires and humans.
But it hurt so badly. Honoka grits her teeth as she tightens the cloth on her wound and trudges closer to the civilian.
Gotta get you somewhere safe…
Honoka rummages the civilian's bag for an address before continuing on her busy night to find the place and put the guy in bed so that they can think it was a nightmare they had.
After that, Honoka let herself go into autopilot, she wasn't quite sure how she got home, but when she was, she threw away the bloodied cloth in the thrash can outside, took a quick shower to wash off the sand, dirt and sweat before plopping into bed to rest.
Uuu…it's not easy… to change Cold Vampires into good ones…when they don't listen… or even if they do?
Honoka thinks as she slowly falls asleep.
But…
The vampire grips her pillow tight, her determination strong.
I won't give up so easily…
Honoka falls asleep and only wakes when Yukiho shouts for her to get up or she'll be late for school.
Ribbon adjusted and checked for the third time, Kotori smiles at herself in the mirror. Brushing her hair to make it just right and she's ready for school.
The ash-brunette hums a carefree tune all the way to school, opening the classroom doors to see if her crush might be here early. And even when she saw that the seat beside hers was empty, she still felt a little bit stuck on cloud nine.
Ah~ I can't believe I dreamt of Honoka-chan last night!
Kotori looks around nervously; not wanting to be caught being weird and blushing at school. But she just can't help these floaty feelings in her heart that she had dreams of the smiley gingerhead.
I'm so in love I don't even know what to do with myself sometimes…hehe~
Kotori giggles at her own lovestruck state. And her smile grew wider when the doors slid open to have Honoka walking in.
Once Honoka was seated, Kotori stammers out, "G-Good morning, Honoka-chan..!"
Honoka turns to give Kotori a smile. "Good morning, Kotori-chan."
Eh?
Kotori felt like something was different than usual. She nods with a small smile, watching Honoka turn around to grab her pencil box to place on the table. Honoka gazing to the board to daze out until the class begins.
This is normal but…Why do I feel like something is off..?
Kotori's gaze falls from her crush's beautiful face to the table where Honoka's arm rested. Golden eyes widens as she notices a deep, long mark on Honoka that looked like a recovering gash.
Honoka-chan got hurt? This must be why…Can I ask? Should I ask? Ahh…What should I do?
Kotori worries her bottom lip as she pondered and contemplated what to do. She didn't want to make Honoka uneasy if the reason for a cut was complicated, she also did not want to come off as annoying and stepping over her boundaries. But she simply did not want to know Honoka injured and she wasn't able to help with anything.
I picked up medical skills from Maki-chan for a reason!
"H-Honoka-chan…" Kotori's voice was extremely soft as she was still unsure of to ask or not.
"Yeah?" Honoka turns with a smile; a smile Kotori now notices seems a bit tired.
It is tired…Honoka-chan…
"Um…Er…Could I…ask you something..?" Kotori played with her fingers nervously, fidgeting in her seat.
Honoka nods. "Of course. Ask me anything, Kotori-chan!" Then she lowers her voice to whisper. "Except math."
Kotori blinks at Honoka who was wearing a crooked smile; clearly she was joking though she also partly meant it too. Kotori could not help but grin and shook her head at the humour. "Mou, Honoka-chan. It isn't about math…"
Honoka chuckles; that light-heartedness the ash-brunette adores. "I'm glad~"
"So…er…can I ask about your arm..?" Kotori looks into Honoka's eyes nervously, praying she did not just ask something taboo.
Honoka looks to her arm and rubs a finger over it lightly, her expression contorted into a slight wince; though Kotori could not help but feel it wasn't pain for the arm exactly. "I…was trying to stop a fight…a…really heated fight."
A fight? Honoka-chan is always so kind and heroic…but that is worrying!
"So I kind of got slas- Er! I mean, scratched…while doing so…" Honoka laughs nervously as she tries to give an honest but ambiguous explanation, her unscathed hand rubbing the back of her head guiltily.
Kotori frowns with concern; she's starting to notice that her crush have tendencies to do a lot of helping and playing down the severity of her pain. "It looks painful… Did you get it properly cleaned and treated?"
I don't want you getting an infection. Or getting hurt at all-
Honoka chuckles again, easily catching Kotori's attention. "You kind of sound like Maki-chan now."
Kotori pointedly pouts at her crush; there Honoka goes again – being cheerful and trying to change the subject. "I'll…I'll treat it for you."
The gingerhead smiles, she usually would adamantly refuse treatment as she doesn't want to worry her friends and thinks her regeneration will be enough but somehow…she doesn't mind when it's Kotori. In fact, she kind of likes the attention and gentleness from her classmate.
"Then, I'm in your care." The words slip out without thinking.
H-Honoka-chan is in my care…
Kotori's cheeks turned a shade of pink darker as she lifts Honoka's hand up slowly, gently; as she didn't want to hurt Honoka. "Let's go to the nurse office?"
Honoka nods meekly, her face kind of red though she doesn't know that; for an unknown reason, her heart was picking up the pace and she was hyperaware of how soft Kotori's hands are.
I'll do my best to tend to Honoka-chan's wound!
Kotori being more focused on making herself useful for Honoka doesn't notice the little tidbit growth of her crush's blushing and neither was she being hyperconscious of holding her crush's hand.
But to the nurse's office they went again, helping Honoka patch up but "in a not so obvious way" as requested by the gingerhead. Kotori may have found it confusing but didn't mind either way. She just loved spending time with her crush and letting the gingerhead be back to the pink of health and smiles.

I…have not updated this story for a year. I am extremely sorry and guilty for doing so. But gosh, when I read back on your comments/reviews and my own chapters, I just- Wow! Remember what made me want to write this so much.
