Chapter Twenty – Training Compilation

Maito Gai did end up meeting with me. However, since his student was in the hospital, he could not spend the whole month with me, training. Thankfully, that was when Kakashi's second choice in sensei came in. As such, for the next month, I spent three days a week training with Gai while the other three I spent with a man who introduced himself as Genma.

Gai, at first, had me running laps around the village, do push ups, sit ups, etc: simple exercises, except taken to the extremes. Thankfully, due to my natural stamina, it was not long until he drilled some katas in me and starting with sparring. That was… an experience but I definitely did improve.

Minori let out a huff as he slowed down, hands bracing on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. His legs were straining under his weight, his heart beating furiously in his chest as he tried to gulp as much air as he could.

"DO NOT STOP NOW, YOUNG MINORI!" the loud voice coming from beside him would have any other day surprised him but right then he was too tired to really react. Beside him Maito Gai ran in place, a large shining grin on his face. "THERE ARE STILL ANOTHER THIRTY-FOUR LAPS TO GO!"

With a groan, Minori took one last gulp of air before he went back to running. It was only the beginning. He still had more waiting for the day…

Minori dodged the volley of punches coming his way, his eyes trying to follow the quick movements of his temporary sensei. He barely noticed the axe kick and he dropped heavily to the ground, rolling to avoid the following attack. The loud boom echoed in the training grounds as the ground where he had been exploded from the strength of the attack.

Minori got back to his feet, the back of his hand swiping at the drop of sweat dripping down to his lips. His eyes narrowed at the glare of the sun.

He did not manage to avoid the next attack and he found himself flying to the crop of trees on the other side of the training grounds.

Shiranui Genma, on the other hand, helped me improve my sneaking, trap making, reaction time and speed. Some days we would race across rooftops or the nearby forests in a ninja version of tag. Most of the times, I was running and he would be throwing senbons at me. Other times, we would disguise ourselves and follow fellow shinobis of Konoha and he would have me gather information from what I could observe. The objective was to not be found and more than once we would change disguise while following the same target.

Minori flipped over a branch, allowing his body to fall for a while before his chakra-coated feet caught another tree trunk and he pushed himself forward with all the strength he had in his legs. He managed to avoid most of the senbons flying at him but some still caught him. Some caught him in the back but the one that pierced his ankle was the one that made him lose balance and he missed the next branch over. He fell down, body catching over branches on the way down before he managed to grab one and halt his descent.

He barely had the time to wince, arm curling around his mid-section, before he had to move again to avoid another volley of senbons. He ran.

Genma leaned over the rooftop, peering down at the people in the market place. Minori stood beside him, trying to deduce who the man would send him after this time. There were three young men in chuunin vests not too far in front of the tea shop, laughing; a woman in civilian clothes but moving with the distinct gait of an experienced fighter was walking down the market place with two plastic bags in hand; a man with the long blond hair of the Yamanaka finished his purchases with a fruit seller, hand going to his pocket to get his wallet.

"Alright, kid," Genma finally said, shifting the senbon in his month to the left, nodding his head at a woman exiting the grocery store, dressed in civilian clothes. She had the distinct eyes of the Hyuuga. "That one."

Minori gave him a blank look that said everything that was on his mind. Genma, of course, only gave him a smirk, raising an eyebrow at him.

"Well? Go on. Chop, chop. We don't have all day."

Minori inwardly sighed. This was going to be a long day.

I had one day to rest my body each week and because of my heightened healing abilities, this one day was enough to heal my body. The first day, I spent with the medical corps as ordered by the Hokage, giving them a batch of stasis seals and showing them how they work. Later in the day, I met the toad sage, Jiraiya in the Hokage's office. That was one meeting I could have done without.

"So that's the brat you told me about, sensei?" was the first thing out of the man's lips as soon as Minori entered the office. The man's tone came out grandstanding and arrogant, as if he was putting on a show, one that was completely unwanted. "I hear you've been playing around with seals, huh? Well, I'm the seal master here; if I'm impressed enough by you, I might take you as an apprentice! You should feel honoured, brat! Not anyone is given that opportunity!" The blank look Minori gave him portrayed how unimpressed he was before he turned his eyes to the Hokage, tilting his head in askance.

Sarutobi sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Yes, Jiraiya, this is Uzumaki Minori. Minori-kun, meet Jiraiya, the Toad Sage. He is Konoha's remaining seal master and one of my students. He will look at the seal you have put on Sasuke-kun."

Minori was made to replicate the seal on a sheet of a paper since Sasuke was off training with Kakashi who-knew-where. The older seal master examined the finished work, turning his head this way and that, hairy eyebrows furrowed in thought.

Finally, he said, "I have no idea what this is. You sure that works, brat? That looks like scribbles."

The whole meeting devolved from there. Mind, it was not going great before either.

Hours later, Minori found himself placing the same seal on the exams' second proctor, Anko, under the watchful and dubious eyes of the Toad Sage. As soon as it was done and everyone concluded that it did work, an annoyed Minori was out of there faster than his legs could carry him.

The rest of my other rest days were spent locking myself in my apartment with my sealing. Thankfully, Naruto was elsewhere so I had the whole apartment to myself and it was pretty peaceful. I also went grocery shopping before lunch each day so I unfortunately had to avoid a Toad Sage that was for some reason stalking me and trying to get me to – for whatever reason – ask him to teach me sealing. As if I needed his teaching.

(I remembered when I thought this man could teach me something. And then I realised that he really could not teach me anything since not only his sealing and my sealing were obviously different, my level was far above anything he could teach me.)

I used all the tricks Genma had taught me during our training to avoid the man, the impersonating I used to do to get fair prices for shopping also helping in that endeavour.

On my last resting day, I had tea with the Hokage in his office while he went over the other seals I could provide for the village. We only made a list of seals I could make, mostly for emergency purposes since we had found that my seals could not be replicated after all. Since only I knew of the meanings behind the letters and symbols I used in them, only I could make them work. I was, however, compensated for my work and paid a handsome price for the seals I had provided. The money I was given was stored away in another of my storage seals in my wrist band, so at least Naruto would not be able to get his grubby hands of it.

Finally, the last day of the exam appeared bright and early, and I found myself standing in front of the stadium where it was to take place with my most prized possessions seals away on me just in case.

AN: I did not want to waste too much time for the training so it only took a short chapter that hopefully encompasses Minori's experiences. I would say, two or three more chapters and then the time skip. After the time skip, the story will follow its own story line. Events from Shippuden might happen but it'll mostly go in AU territory.

Anyway, leave behind your thoughts and tell me what you think.
