Chapter Twenty-One – Third Exam

The stadium was already full and bursting by the time I entered. I joined the other contestants who were already waiting in the middle of the stadium. The only ones not there were Naruto and Uchiha. I was a bit surprised to find Genma instead of the other proctor for this part of this exam but I did not think much of it. The man shot me a smirk when his eyes caught mine, and a wink.

By the time the first match was set to start, only Naruto had appeared, stumbling in the stadium with a shout, but still no Uchiha. There were a few confused grumbles but the exam still began. There was still time until his match so the proctors opted to wait before disqualifying Uchiha, but politics also played a role in their decision since most of the audience had come to watch the 'Last Loyal Uchiha' fight.

The first match was Naruto against the Hyuuga boy. After greeting the spectators, the two stayed behind while the rest of us made our way to the viewing chamber away from the rest of the audience. As I left, I shot a look up at where the Hokage was sitting right next to the 'Kazekage'. I knew what was to come but it was not like I was going to do anything about it.

It was none of my business.

(I never noticed the twinge in my chest nor the slight conflict in my own mind…)

The other contestants and I settled in the viewing chamber, most of us leaning against the railing to be able to see the fight under us. All Konoha shinobis were spread out, with Aburame and Nara standing closer to me, and the Suna nin situated in a corner of the room.

The fight between Hyuuga and my brother started with the two of them arguing before they actually got to fighting. So unprofessional. Throwing their private lives like this around during such an event was simply pathetic. And attention-seeking.

Naruto, surprisingly, managed to win the match. What really did surprise me was when he managed to use the Kyuubi's chakra with enough effectiveness not to be too overwhelmed by the bloodlust. Clearly, he still left many openings in his fight but apparently the Hyuuga could not cut off the Kyuubi's chakra. Food for thought. Naruto's use of the red chakra resonated with mine even across the distance that separated us and that was slightly irritating. There was a small tug in my gut, not painful but still noticeable. That might pose a problem later; I wondered what the reaction would be if we were both using the chakra…

After the Hyuuga had been carted off to be seen by the medics, my opponent and I were called down for our match. As I walked down the steps to get back in the arena, I crossed paths with Naruto. Our eyes crossed and he gave me a giant grin.

"Did you see, Mi-chan!? I beat him!" he exclaimed. When I did not reply and instead continued on my way downstairs, he yelled at my back, "GOOD LUCK, MI-CHAN!"

How… annoying.

Down in the arena, I stood facing my opponent; he was one of the Konoha shinobis I had never encountered before the exams, Akado Yoroi, the one that could absorb chakra through touch.

While this part of the exam was supposed to be used in such a way that the contestants showed off their fighting abilities and strategy, I also knew that this would ultimately be a moot point. I could care less about showing off, but I also wanted to be promoted if I had to be stuck in the village. That was why when the match started and my opponent flung himself at me, I flipped out of the way, Genma's training really coming as a great help. Akado was fast and if not for my training in dodging from Genma, I would have most probably not been fast enough to get out of the way.

The next few minutes were spent with Akado attacking, trying to get his grimy hands on me and me jumping around, cartwheeling here and there or even sliding between his legs that one time. It was not all meaningless though; while moving around the arena, I discreetly laid out a sealing array, one I had developed that month during my rest days.

When he finally stepped where I wanted him to, I activated the first part of the seal, tapping my toes to the ground once. The sealing array lit up and Akado found himself paralysed. That done, my fingers flew through a quick sequence of hand signs before slamming my palms into the ground. The sealing array pulsed, the light changing from white to red and then a light blue. Then, four pillars of light shot around Akado, creating a translucent box around his paralysed form, locking him inside.

"Do you yield?" I asked in the sudden silence of the arena.

"Fuck you!" he spat. I kept my face as blank as usual at his insult, knowing that I had already won. He was just being stubborn. The paralysis had worn off, with the activation of this part of the seal – (maybe I should work on improving this…) – and Akado threw himself at the walls of the box, fists punching in the translucent barrier that rippled but doing no real damage.

Wanting to show off a bit more, I nonchalantly raised my hand, gathered chakra in my index finger and wrote on the air, in English, 'absorb chakra: 20%'. The writing compressed and became a tiny ball of chakra that I flicked at the box. There was a slight pause before it pulsed.

Akada let out a gasp that sounding loud in the silence of the stadium and clutched at his chest, his wide eyes staring at me in shock.

"What – What did you do!?" he gasped.

I raised an eyebrow at him but instead of replying, I asked again. "Do you yield?" As if getting back to his senses, he snarled at me, clearly still not giving up. This time I wrote, 'absorb chakra: 60%'. And after flicking the ball of chakra at the box, Akado let out a loud groan, his legs buckling under him and he found himself unable to keep standing. And then his whole body collapsed on the ground and he lost consciousness. I almost blinked. Huh. So, a person could be knocked out by having only 20% chakra in one's body…? Interesting.

"Akado Yoroi is unable to continue the match," Genma called into the silence. "Winner: Uzumaki Minori!"

Pause.

And then the whole stadium roared.

I had to dismantle the rest of my sealing array before I could leave the arena. Akado had been carted off by the medics after I had to reassure them that all I had done was absorb his chakra through my barrier seal. Talk about irony: Akado's ability to absorb chakra had been what had inspired me for this seal and since he wanted to use this against me, I thought it was only fair that I gave him a taste of his own medicine. At first, I had wanted to use the barrier to use elemental chakra to get him to yield – maybe by lighting a fire inside, fill in the box with water until he was in danger of drowning, electrocute him with lightning, or even use wind chakra to remove the air from the box and knock him out – but since I did not really know how to manipulate elemental chakra well enough, I had to settle for absorbing his chakra instead. Still, that would be a good idea to expand on at a later date…

I made sure there was nothing left of the seal on the ground. Genma, who had been standing close observing my work while the whole stadium waited for the next match, remarked quietly for only me to hear, "Remind me not to piss you off, kid."

Standing up from my crouch, I raised an eyebrow at him and then, feeling mischievous and in a good mood at the positive reception at my sealing, I smirked at him. While the man blinked at me, probably at my unusual show of emotion, I turned and made my way out of the arena.

There was no way I would not pass after this.

The next match was between Nara Shikamaru and Temari of Suna. Since I knew that this was going to be a long one, I decided to go get myself some lunch. The contestants were allowed to come and go as we pleased, so long as we were present for our match. Since I was already done with mine and knew that there would probably not be any more for me, I decided that I could allow myself some reprieve. I really did not want to have to deal with Naruto and his inevitable screeching at my easy victory and going to the viewing chamber would mean being stuck there with him for – maybe – hours.

I ended up at the barbecue place manned by the Akimichis, which was surprisingly not as crowded as I expected for this time of day. I took my time and even had the time to get out one of my books for some light reading. It was hours later that I actually left, full of good food and even some dessert. I was rounding the corner when I came across a group of men exiting an alley, roaring with laugher. A very familiar group of men.

I did not know who was more surprised, the men that had once been part of my nightmares back when this body was younger, standing there with their mouths open and their laughter frozen at their lips, or me who had thought that I would not have to come across them again after I had managed to defend myself against them the first time all those years before.

However, before any of us could react, there was a series of explosions and the ground rumbled.

Ah, the invasion had started.

At the most inopportune time.

Or not, I observed, as the end of the alley was suddenly blocked off when the ceiling of the nearby building collapsed, leaving the only exit where I was standing.

I narrowed my eye. Hm.

AN: And here comes the start of the invasion.

I hope I did not make Minori appear too overpowered but I wanted to show the ease with which he is able to defeat people with his sealing since he is supposed to be really good at it. I also showed some limitations that he found himself facing with being unable to do a few things. Also, Minori's action of leaving the stadium during the exam is him trying to unconsciously step away from the action. He knows what is to come but he also has some internal struggle that he is not even aware of yet. That's because he has become so used to hiding himself behind a blank mask that he had even started to fool himself.

And yes, the group of men is actually the same group that used to attack him when he was a kid. The whole reason I even had this happen to him all those years before - apart from a few other things that will come over in the future - is for what's going o happen next. I always have a reason behind things I write and it might have appeared that at the beginning of the story, having Minori abused as a child be kind of cliché - which in a way it is - but I also had a reason behind it. And you'll find out why with how the next few chapters follow.

Don't forget to leave behind your thoughts.
