Third POV
Once Stephanie had given them the breakthrough they needed, they spent hours going over everything they could find on 'Harleen Quinzel'. She was fairly young to be one of the head doctors in charge of Arkham Asylum, her position of power no doubt due to Slade's influence and wealth. Stephanie, who is Tim's girlfriend apparently, was filled in on all the details, at least about Slade. Despite the craziness of it all, she actually believed them-
-at least enough to help.
In fact, she said that Dr. Quinzel frequently had a gentleman come in to the Asylum to speak with her. The gentleman she believed now to be Slade Wilson. Stephanie informed them that Harleen had taken the next two weeks off. Even though they assured her she didn't have to, Stephanie vowed to help sneak Bruce into Dr. Quinzel's office.
Except, everything suddenly changed when Damian came running into the room. A look of terror and panic on his face like they had never seen before. Instantly Dick's heart stopped beating, his stomach dropping, and his face draining of all color as Damian said the words that made his worst fears come to life.
"Jason and Kori are gone. I can't find them anywhere" he breathed, chest heaving.
Instantly the room went dead silent, everyone collectively stopped breathing before they launched out of their chairs and sprinted out of the room. Everyone, even Stephanie, searched the Manor and the grounds. Dick ran upstairs, finding his, Kori's, and Jason's bedrooms all empty. As everyone else continued to search, he froze in the middle of his room. They could look all they wanted but Dick knew the truth; they were gone.
He had failed.
As the pain of that statement splintered throughout his body he released an anguished cry, throwing the nearest thing across the room where it shattered against the wall. Once he started, he couldn't stop. Lamps, dishes, pictures; everything and anything he could his hands on went sailing across the room. He was blinded by hurt and pain, the fury crescendoing until he finally snapped.
Falling to his knees in the middle of the carnage that was now his bedroom, Dick wailed. He cried and sobbed and screamed until his throat was raw. The two people he loved most in the world, the two people he vowed to protect were now gone. Dick Grayson had once again stood there helplessly as if he was still a child in the circus, watching as his parents fell to their deaths. Helpless to do anything about it.
Except this was much worse. Dick was no longer a child, powerless to save his parents from falling. But this? He could have prevented this. If he had paid closer attention, if he hadn't left them alone; all the what-if's of what he could've done to prevent this overwhelming him. This was all his fault, and the two people he loved more than anything would now pay the consequences for his mistake.
Bruce stood on the other side of the door, tears in his eyes. Looking up at Alfred as he walked down the hall, the terror so clear in his normally so peaceful eyes. The old butler gently lead him away from the door and back downstairs into the library. Everyone else was already sitting back down at the table, either crying or sitting there and staring off into disbelieving space.
"Where's Dick?" Tim asked lightly, tear tracks down his cheeks.
Shaking his head as he sat down, Alfred answered for him "He is upstairs in his room, grieving."
"We can't give up yet. Even if they're gone, we can still find them. We have to" Selena said, a fire in her eyes like Bruce had never seen before, "we're just starting to get on his trail."
Bruce stood and pulled out his cellphone, scrolling for the right number. "Who are you calling, sir?"
"Jim" Bruce answered, putting the phone to his ear, "Jim, listen, I-"
"Bruce please, I have no time for more favors. There was a mass breakout at Arkham and- and Barbara is missing" Gordon admitted, his voice breaking at the end as sirens wailed in the background.
Taken aback, Bruce was silent for a moment before answering "I'm so sorry, Jim" before hanging up.
"What is it?"
"Barbara is missing," he said, walking over to their board of information and looking over it with a careful eye.
"You mean Barbara Gordon, right?" Stephanie asked, everyone turning to look at her as she swallowed nervously, "she's one of Quinzel's patients."
Dick awoke with a pounding headache, his body aching from the uncomfortable position he had fallen asleep on the floor. The chaos of his emotions surrounded him, mimicking the pain in his chest as his eyes blinked open in the early morning light. He was facing the corner, staring at nothing as he wiped the dried over tears from his face.
Suddenly, a smile shine caught his attention. Taking a moment for his tired eyes to focus, he crawled over and reached under his bookshelf. Immediately when he grabbed it he knew what it was, releasing a small gasp as he pulled it from amongst the dust bunnies.
"My lae'xa" he breathed, tears immediately falling from his eyes as he turned the silver armband over in his hands. Gently he traced the delicate feather engravings, finger lovingly grazing the star as a silent sob wracked his body. That dreadful morning he had woken up to her on the ceiling he had thrown it in his rage, the beautiful band rolling into the corner under his bookshelf to be forgotten in all the pandemonium.
He recalled the night she gave this to him, so nervous about it and how much he had loved it. This small part of her, now alien, culture she had been willing to share. Kori's beautiful smile when he had assured her how much he loved it. The way her eyes lit up when she explained all it could do-
Sitting up abruptly, Dick's eyes went wide as he remembered a function she had explained very briefly. Practically sprinting down the hall, he quickly did a search of Kori's bedroom and felt excited relief in his chest as he slid down the banister. Dick skidded to a stop once he reached the study, everyone looking up when he ran in, panting and waving the band around like a lunatic.
"I- Kori -tracking- armband" he tried, mind a frenzy.
"Dick, calm down and catch your breath. We can't understand a word you're saying" Bruce instructed, everyone waiting patiently as Dick did just that.
Once he had calmed down enough to form full sentences, Dick explained "When Kori gave me this, she explained to me that hers and mine are linked. It has a sort of gps, and I can track her lae'xa. I checked upstairs and I couldn't find hers, so she must be wearing it."
Everyone was frozen in shock, tears streaming down Dick's face as he pressed his fingertip to the star. He scrolled through the menu and pulled up the map on the small screen, projecting it onto the blank wall. Two dots appeared, a blue and a blinking red one in the distance. Everyone stared in awe, before scrambling to look for maps and match them to the dot.
They went through Slade's property records, and it all lead to an abandoned old factory that had burned to the ground years ago. A Wilson Industries factory. It was in a desolate part of the city, away from the hustle and bustle and prying eyes of anyone who could walk by. Dick burst into tears again for the millionth time, whimpering a broken "We found them."
"Kori! Kori please wake up."
Her head ached and pounded like it never had before, her entire body burning as if she was on fire as she slowly filtered back into consciousness. That voice seemed so far away, but she fought and clawed to hear it again. Ever so slowly her eyes fluttered open a fraction and she heard a relieved "ohmygod" on a single breath.
Finally she looked up to see Jason's terrified face, one of his eyes swollen up and some dried blood on the side of his face. "Thank god you're okay. You weren't waking up and I was worried sick-"
"Jason? Where are we?" she asked, quietly, not recognizing her surroundings.
A chuckle came from within the room, her blood running ice cold and Jason's fear completely taking over him. She sat up with a lurch, her stomach knotting up in the process as she took in her surroundings. They were in some sort of sealed off section of a room. There were two examination tables and what looked to be a bunch of medical supplies behind a sealed wall of glass, where her and Jason sat on the floor.
On the other side was some monitors against the farthest wall, another much smaller sealed off room to the left, but most of all there stood Slade. Arms folded behind his back, smug, cocky smirk fixed firmly on his face as he watched her from behind the glass. "I was beginning to think you'd never wake, dearest. Jason and I have been having a wonderful time while you were asleep."
She looked over at Jason, the worst imaginable suddenly coming over her when she heard another chuckle. "Oh my dear don't worry, I haven't harmed a single hair on his head while you were out. At least, not yet-"
"What do you want?" She asked, standing on wobbly legs but hiding it as she stalked towards the glass with balled fists.
"Patience, my dear, all good things to those who wait as they say. You'll find out soon enough, both of you. Until then, please, make yourselves at home" he smiled, giving her one last glance before turning on his heel and leaving the room with the door slamming shut behind him, leaving the two of them alone.
She heard a sob, and immediately she fell to her knees and held Jason to her chest. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry birsch'ka this is all my fault. I never should've left the Manor and I never should've taken you with me I'm so sorry."
Jason just shook his head, clinging onto her for dear life as tears finally escaped Kori's eyes. Pressing a kiss to his temple as they rocked back and forth, she whimpered "He'll find us. He always finds us."
I know this was super late and kinda lame but I just wanna get this finished lmao. Despite that only like three chapters left! Sorry if there are mistakes I quickly read it through. Despite that if you liked it don't forget to fave, follow, review, or all 3! Please and thank you ;)
