Jesus, took me two months to finally get this chapter out. Apologies for taking so long, but Sword and Shield took up my life until I was drained, and only the announcement of the Mystery Dungeon remake (SO EXCITED) and DLC for Sword and Shield got me in a Pokemon mood again, so thank the Pokemon Direct for this chapter!
Thanks to Tim the Vocalist for beta reading, and even writing, some of this chapter with me! Also, thanks to everyone for your reviews so far on the story! Only three chapters left after this one, but trust me sequels are in the planning stages! Enjoy!

Rain echoed off the ground, landing with a loud plop onto the wet grass land that was present on Exeggutor Island, and while the Alolan Exeggutor were enjoying themselves as the rain drenched them, Wes and Rose certainly were not having a good time in the inclement weather. The moment they had arrived on the island, they had made a dash towards a small cave that was embedded into the cliffside on the island, waiting out for the sky to clear up before they decided to continue any farther. Thankfully, the Exeggutor didn't seem to pay them any mind, though Wes had a sinking feeling they would need their help to get up to where the Sun Flute was, as while they were running towards the cave he wasn't seeing any way to climb up to where the shine was located.
"It doesn't look like it should rain too much longer", Rose muttered, looking out towards the horizon. "It's all clear over there and it's heading this way."
"Then I guess we'll just wait it out", Wes sighed, sitting down and looking at the Exeggutor outside. Rose sat down as well, the two trainers staring out as the Grass Dragon types enjoyed themselves in the downpour. Finally, it was Wes who spoke first, chucking a bit and earning himself an odd look from the redhead before he spoke. "Funny… how I didn't want to come here. I was just thinking about it this morning, I protested the idea of coming to Alola and taking part in this school… now, I really can't imagine my life going any differently. I'm glad my mom forced me to come here, and I'm so glad I met everyone I did, caught the Pokemon I did… and got to take place in this Island Trial Challenge with you."
"So much has changed since we first met", Rose replied, smiling as she too began to remember their journey up till then. "We went from not liking each other at all, to basically being the dynamic duo who could take down any trial that would come our way… and we're about to go fight a light eating Legendary? Never thought things would turn out the way they are, but honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way."
"Though, I will admit that more changed then I thought would", Wes smiled, looking out and seeing the clouds had shifted a bit. "Wanna know a secret?"
"Sure", Rose replied, wondering what exactly the silver haired teen could tell him.
"I don't want to be a Pokemon League Champion anymore."
Rose stared flabbergasted as Wes for what seemed like minutes on end before she finally could find the words to reply, "A-are you serious!? B-but what is your goal then?"
"Well, that part I'm still trying to figure out", Wes answered in earnest. "Nanu said I could be a good member of the International Police, and that path is honestly somewhat appealing to me… getting to travel the world and putting a stop to bad guys, just me and my Pokemon. Better than staying in one spot and taking challenger after challenger that's for sure."
"I mean, Jason is here and he's Kalos Champion, so I am sure there are some exceptions", Rose muttered, thinking it over. "S-so when we get to the end, what are you going to do? Just let me take the Alolan Champion throne uninterrupted?"
"You're funny", Wes challenged, smirking a little. "No, you're still one of my goals after all this time." Wes blinked, turning to see Rose staring at him with a massive blush on her face, before he realized he had worded his sentence weirdly, blushing as well before correcting himself. "I-I don't mean in that way! You handed me my first ever loss after all, so I still want to challenge you to another battle, and this time, I don't intend to lose to you!"
"O-oh", Rose sighed a bit, before smirking as well, determination filling her eyes. "Well, that's fine! But don't think that I intend to lose to you either, Wes! Once we save the world from Necrozma, you and I are going to battle again! Count on it!"
"As touching as this all is", Nayru muttered, standing up and waking out of the cave. "I think the rain is stopping, so isn't it about time we continued on and got the flute?"
"Nayru is right!" Maple cheered, flying out into the open wilds. "Wow, look over there! It's a rainbow!"
"Shall we?" Wes asked, holding out his hand to help Rose up, and while the redhead took his hand with a smile, a small blush creeped on her face once more.

"Hey, they're back!" Lillie cheered, waving as the boat that sailed off to Exeggutor Island docked, allowing Wes and Rose to get off and back onto the wooden dock that made up the town.
"You two sure took your sweet time", Mina teased, smirking a little. "Well, now that you got the two flutes, you can go play them up at the altar to summon the Legendary Pokemon. The altar can be found in the deepest part of the Vast Poni Canyon."
"Vast Poni Canyon got it", Lillie nodded, turning to Wes and Rose with a determined expression on her face. "Alright, let's go! The sooner we get there, the sooner we can save Nebby and my mother!"
The two trainers nodded in agreement, beginning their track towards the mountain region that lie in the distance, as they were waved off by Mina. The island was very plan compared to the first three that they had traveled through, almost having a natural, untouched feeling to it. The grasslands and planes that wild Pokemon lived in were almost completely untouched by man-kind, and even the town they had just come from blended in very well with the natural surroundings. It was almost like they had entered another, more natural region entirely, and left Alola and it's rich culture behind all together. Even the town they eventually reached looked like it was barely touched by man, ruined in appearance and with barely anyone around.
"W-Wes!" Rose suddenly gasped, pointing towards the path up ahead that lead into the canyon. Wes blinked, looking up from his PokeDex to see that six Team Skull Grunts were blocking their way, posed in their signature, hunched over position as they stared directly at the trainers approaching them.
"Team Skull", Wes muttered, looking at each grunt as they stopped directly in front of them. "What is it that you thugs want now?"
"We heard about you numskulls at Arther", one of the grunts replied. "Do you really know how to open an Ultra Wormhole and save our boy Guzma!? If you do… please, save Guzma for us!"
"You dummies", a familiar voice said from behind them. "They're trying to save the boss, so what do you wanna get in their way for?!" Rose blinked, looking up to see Plumeria walking up towards the six grunts. The skull members instantly got out of the way, standing off to the side as Plumeria walked up, looking at the three trainers in turn, before her eyes landed on a certain blonde. "Lillie, right? To be honest, I've treated you really bad… even if I was just doing the work the president told me to do, I shouldn't have done all that. Even if I apologize now, I know it's probably too late for you to forgive me, though." The skull admin crossed her arms, looking off into the sky. "See, Guzma… he really likes the president. She's the only adult who ever seemed to see how strong he was."
"My mother… she's selfish", Lillie replied. "She decides all by herself what she thinks needs to be done in order to make other people happy, not even caring what it is they may want… but people ought to help one another out! That is what I have learned here in Alola, and that is what I'm going to teach her, too. Then, I think we can save Mr. Guzma."
Plumeria thought for a moment before uncrossing her arms and looking back at them. "You know… deep down, you're kind of like the president… you've gone in a different direction, but I can tell you have the same strength in your convictions. Wes, Lillie, Rose… I know you've got no reason to help, but please save Guzma for us. I know he doesn't think it, but Alola really means a lot to him. That's why he's doing something so reckless to try and save it."
It was Rose that stepped forward and nodded, giving Plumeria a determined smile. "Of course, we will! You can count on us!"
Plumeria nodded, holding out a purple Z-Crystal that Wes recognized as poison-type Z-Crystal. "Thank you, Rose… I know I definitely wasn't kind to you, either, but maybe this will make up for it. I guess giving you this Z-Crystal is also kind of helping each other. Anyway, I should go… good luck, and thank you again."
"Thanks, Plumeria", Rose nodded, taking the Z-Crystal she was handing her before watching her take her leave. "I suppose even Team Skull is not all bad."
"Anyway, let's keep going", Wes muttered, stepping forward and leading the group down the path towards what looked like a dead tree sitting by itself in the middle on the road, a small cave entrance was on the right side that Wes had a feeling would guide them farther down the path and towards the altar, but as they got closer Wes could see the familiar, robotic like humans standing there, watching them approach.
"Please wait", Dulse spoke first, holding out his hand to stop them in their tracks. "We have been betrayed by Lusamine, and now we are to put our faith in children next? Even if we are still weak, we have also learned to do battle with Pokemon! We should be the ones to resolve the situation with Necrozma ourselves!"
"W-wait", Rose gasped, looking at the two Ultra Reacon Squad members. "You two went off with Jason, didn't you? So why are you telling us all this and not him?"
"I'm guessing Jason gave them the boot", Wes muttered, before smirking a little at Dusle. "Either that, or you were too weak to face him, so you're trying to pick on me."
"Jason was right", Dulse muttered. "You are cocky, overconfident, and do not understand the situation you are entering. You are nothing more then a brat who just was lucky. I will defeat you, and we will handle things with our own power this time! Poipole, to my side!" The Poison Pin emerged from the Beast Ball, hovering in the air and staring down Wes with a recognizing gaze. Immediately, Wes knew what needed to be done, and pulled out the Luxury Ball containing Zero, tossing it forward and letting the Synthetic Pokemon out. The creature roared at the sight of Poipole, but made no attempts to charge forward. Dulse, however, seemed unimpressed. "That beast again… it has it's helmet off, but what is so different about this time and the last? Can you control that things power this time, or will it try and kill my dear Ultra Beast?"
"Guess you're going to have to try your luck", Wes commented, pulling out the Memory Drives and throwing the lilac one at Zero, who let it slide into his head and transform his body. At once, the drive changed Zero into the Psychic typing,
"Poipole, Poison Jab!" Dulse commanded. The beast charged and rammed into Zero with his stinger, and while Zero growled in annoyance, the attack did not seem to do that much to the chimeric Pokemon, who only shook his head to throw Poipole back.
"Zero, Multi-Attack!" Wes commanded. Zero roared, allowing his claws to fill with psychic energy before charging forward and slashing at Poipole, doing severe damage to the poison type, causing it to fall from the air. In a single move, Wes had defeated Dulse, and this time Zero stood triumphant, not moving to strike again. Dulse blinked in surprise, before recalling Poipole with a sigh.
"Can we not stand up against the long history of a region like Alola, where the culture of Pokemon battling has had so long to develop?" Dulse thought out loud.
"Mm-hmm", Zossie finally spoke up. "The people of Alola get along and get to know each other through Pokemon battles."
"Our culture is rich in Pokemon battles", a familiar voice said, causing Wes to turn and see Hapu walking up to the group, smiling. "Greetings. I am the kahuna of this island, Hapu. You are from the beasts' world, are you not? We in Alola have long lived together with our Pokemon, being aided by them to survive. If you are in some sort of trouble, then we will gladly come to your aid however we can."
"That is most generous of you", Dulse replied. "Then, what Jason said is true…"
"Huh?" Rose asked, looking at Dulse as if prodding him for information.
"It is nothing", Zossie immediately interrupted with her signature smile.
"Well then, if we are going to help you, then we better send these three on their way!" Hapu stated. "The path to the shrine is through the canyon. There will be one final trial you two will have to overcome to get there, but I am sure you can do it!"
"Thanks, Hapu", Wes smiled at her, before turning to Wes and Rose. "Alright, girls, lets head out!"
Dulse and Zossie gave their signature robotic wave as they saw the three trainers enter the cave, and once they were out of sight, Zossie turned with a smile towards Dulse. "So, he was right after all."
"Wes, Rose, and Jason… the fate of Alola, and perhaps the entire world, is in your hands now. Good luck."
XxXxXxX
"I never want to see another boulder puzzle again", Rose groaned, rubbing her legs as they took a break just outside of a cave entrance high up in the canyon region.
"That... was a lame trial", Wes muttered, looking back and sighing.
"I wouldn't count our Torchics before they hatch, master", Nayru warned, looking ahead. "I still sense a powerful presence up ahead, we might not even be at the location of the trial." Suddenly, she narrowed her eyes. "Wait... make that two presences..."
"You're telling me we might have to face TWO totem Pokemon!?" Maple sighed, shaking her head.
"We can't give up, yet!" Lillie cheered, smiling. "You guys have faced everything up till now, you can overcome anything!"
"Thanks for the vote of confidence, Lillie", Wes smiled at her, turning towards and cave and taking a deep breath before walking inside, everyone else following in his wake. Upon entering the cave, Wes could see that a stone monument was sitting just off to the left side. Confused, Wes walked up to the monument and began to make out the faint letters etched into the stone.
Ahead lies a sacred ground of trials. None who do not take part in its trials will be allowed to walk upon this earth. Those lacking the courage to defeat the totem guarding this land will be denied entry. But those who believe in their Pokemon and walk beside them shall gain great power.
"No captain", Wes muttered, looking around and frowning. "But I guess this is our trial."
"So... what are we facing?" Rose asked, looking worried. "Ground? Steel?"
"Only one way to find out..." Nayru muttered. "We need to step forward and accept the trial."
Wes and Rose nodded, walking forward, with Nayru and Maple hovering after them. Lillie and Faye both looked worried, but followed a few paces behind as to not look like they too were taking place in the trial. As they walked, Wes noticed that wild dragon like Pokemon were wondering around all over the cave, with grey bodies and yellow scale like parts on their bodies.
"I think these are pre-evolved forms of the Totem Pokemon, if this is like our first trial", Rose muttered, recalling that the first trial she and Wes ever faced was very similar to the one they were facing right now. "Hey, Rotom? Can you scan these wild Pokemon so we might learn what we are facing?"
"Certantly-zzt!" the dex sprang to life, pulling up pictures of the smaller creature first. "Jangmo-o, the Scaly Pokemon! It expresses its feelings by smacking its scales. Metallic sounds echo through the tall mountains where Jangmo-o lives." Rotom then pulled up the larger creature's picture. "Hakamo-o, the Scaly Pokemon! It sheds and regrows its scales on a continuous basis. The scales become harder and sharper each time they're regrown. The scales it sheds can be molded and processed to make pots and pans. They conduct heat well, so they're a popular item."
"So what we are most likely going to face is a full grown version of these guys", Wes muttered.
"Dragon and Fighting types", Maple informed them, looking at Rotom's screen. "Get your fairy type attacks ready."
"Ok, I love this trial!" Nayru grinned, readying herself for combat. The trial goers continued on until they reached a large room with a pedistal sitting in the center, a glittering batch of Z-Crystals sitting nicely in the center. At the back of the room, an opening which lead to the altar could be soon, but Wes and Rose were more concerned about the fact that the Z-Crystals were right in their view, but the Totem Pokemon was no where to be found.
"This is the damn Gumshoos all over again, isn't it?" Wes muttered, looking around.
"At least you aren't running forward like last time", Rose pointed out.
"...so, who's going to take the bait?" Nayru asked, looking between the two trainers, who each were remembering the Gumshoos leaping out of nowhere, and did not want another close call.
Maple, who wasn't present at said trial, only scoffed. "Okay, if you three won't do it, I will!"
"Maple, wait!" Rose commanded, the electric mouse flying forward with a grin on her face, until suddenly a large shadow appeared and caused her to scream and fly off to the side. The large dragon landed with a loud, clanging thud, it's scales rippling and echoing on the cavern walls. With a loud roar, he eagerly faced his challengers, grinning.
"Alright then, least it wasn't me this time!" Wes commented, earning himself a glare from Rose and Maple.
"It's dex entry time!" Rotom called out, pulling out a picture of the dragon. "Kommo-o, the Scaly Pokemon! When it spots enemies, it threatens them by jingling the scales on its tail. Weak opponents will crack and flee in panic. Its rigid scales function as offense and defense. In the past, its scales were processed and used to make weapons and other commodities."
"Maple, get back here!" Rose commanded. "Even though it's a fighting type, I think Brionne's ice type attacks would be more effective here!"
"Fine, I need to rest my poor heart anyway!" Maple gasped, flying back and sitting next to Lillie and Faye, who both were staring up at the dragon with fear in their eyes. Rose threw her Poke Ball forward, sending out the Pop Star Pokemon, who clapped excitedly.
"Nayru, you're up!" Wes stated. "I put the Fairy Memory on Zero, but I'm pretty sure you can handle this one."
"Please, this dragon is toast", Nayru smirked, stepping forward, her hands sparkling with fairy energy. The Kommo-o became surrounded the signature totem energy, before charging forward, his fist sparkling with electricity before he slammed it into Brionne, the water type screaming in pain before being sent flying by the Thunder Punch.
"Brionne, counter with Ice Beam!" Rose commanded. Despite being injured, the sea lion twirled in the air, sending out a blast of icy energy, which made contact with the dragon, but even though the attack was super effective, it barely seemed to harm the scale covered Pokemon, who only growled in annoyance at the attack.
"Nayru, Moonblast!" Wes ordered. Nayru held her hands out, charging a ball of pink energy before shooting it at her opponent, who took the attack head on and let out a minor gasp of pain, but stood right back up as if the attack did nothing more then cause slight discomfort.
"...okay what is in that totem aura that is making it this strong?" Nayru gasped, eyes widened. "That attack was doublely super effective!"
"...that's not even a word!" Maple called from the sidelines, earning the mouse a glare from the emotion Pokemon.
"Regardless of if it's a word or not", Wes said in annoyance, "This totem Pokemon is way stronger than the ones we've faced in the past! We need to be alert, cause it seems ready for anything we can throw at it."
Kommo-o roared in retaliation, garnering everyone's attention. It began to clang it's arms together, the metallic scales causing a loud ruckus. Once it finished clanging its arms and shaking its tail to make even more noise, the loud buzzing of insect wings suddenly echoed in the cave, and before the trainers realized what was happening, a red-bodied pokemon flew past them, landing beside the Totem Dragon. Two orange eyes stared down from a red, shiny body, insect wings flapping in irritation at them as it crouched down into a battle stance, its hands looking more like monstrous claws ready to crush anything it got its grip on.
"A steel type. I hate this trial now", Nayru muttered.
"Scizor, the Pincer Pokemon", Rotom analyzed the newcomer. "Once it has identified something as an enemy, it will continue beating them with its steel-hard pincers until there's nothing left but scraps."
"Mew dammit", Wes muttered. "Nayru doesn't have anything that can take a Scizor on. Rose, you'll need to play possum for me!"
"Alright, but Brionne doesn't really have any attacks that can hurt it, either", Rose warned Wes before turning back to the battle. "Brionne, Scald!" Brionne took a deep breath, sending out a jet of boiling water which slammed into Scizor, but the bug Pokemon knew not to bother itself with the water type. Instead, it turned right to Nayru, charging forward with his pincers at the ready.
"Nayru!" Wes called in panic. The psychic type raised her hands in defense, but suddenly a blast of fire emerged from them, engulfing the pincer Pokemon in intense flame. When the attack finished, Scizor was lying in defeat, its once red body covered in soot and ash.
"Whoa... HOW DID I DO THAT!?" Nayru gasped in awe, looking down at her hands which were still sparking with embers.
"T-that was Mystical Fire!" Rose gasped, looking shocked. "B-but how did Nayru learn it without the use of a Technical Machine?"
"I really don't care how", Wes breathed in relief. "Her learning that helped us defeat that Scizor, and any more that might come to Kommo-o's aid will be made quick work of now."
Kommo-o, however, seemed to have other plans. Once more, it began to clang its arms, roaring much louder than it did before. And this time, it wasn't a Scizor that came to fight alongside it. Instead, huge leathery wings pushed air out of the cave behind it, and the challengers had to bring up their arms to resist the heavy gale. When they could finally see, a huge black body had taken its place at Kommo-o's side, a purple underbelly that morphed to light blue at the tail being the brightest part of its body. They could barely make out the white fur at its neck and the same blue webbing on its wings. A pair of yellow eyes stared them down, and under it's sharp red nose was a gleeful grin, looking more excited than challenging. That was when they noticed the large ears on top of its head as well. The new wyvern let out a loud screech, easily making the Kommo-o's roar sound more like an irritated growl.
"W-what is that!?" Wes gasped, looking shocked at the appearence of the new Pokemon.
"Well, only one way to find out!" Rotom cheered, as if excited he was getting to analyze tons of Pokemon today. "Noivern, the Sound Wave Pokemon. The ultrasonic waves it emits from its ears can reduce a large boulder to pebbles. It swoops out of the dark to attack."
"Alright, easy!" Nayru grinned. "I'll work on Kommo-o, and since that Noivern is Flying and Dragon, Rose's Brionne should take it out with one ice attack.
Rose nodded in agreement, turning and pointing towards the bat like Pokemon. "Brionne, Ice Beam!" Brionne let out the icy beam of energy again, however Noivern dodged out of the way so fast that Wes almost missed it moving. The beam hit the wall uselessly, freezing part of it. Noivern turned, opening his mouth and letting out a familiar, purple and black ball of energy before firing it at Nayru, who was hit by the attack and sent flying.
"Nayru!" Wes called. "Are you ok?"
"I want that thing dead", Nayru hissed, glaring at the Noivern, who only smirked back.
"Wait, that was Shadow Ball", Rose thought out loud. "But... Noivern cannot naturally learn that move in the wild!"
"My mom knew that attack cause she was owned by another trainer before being released", Nayru reminded her, glaring at the dragon. "Maybe this Noivern is the same."
"Regardless, this isn't looking good", Wes hissed, racking his brain for ideas, before opening his eyes and pointing towards the Noivern. "Nayru, Moonblast!" Nayru, sensing her trainers plan, obeyed at once, letting out a powerful blast of energy towards Noivern, who had not been expecting the attack to be sent towards him and took the full force of it, landing with a thud on the ground and hissing in pain.
"Nice job, Wes!" Rose called out, but she had not realized that Brionne was now in danger. Turning back and letting out a gasp, she could do nothing but watch as her Pokemon was hit with another Thunder Punch, getting sent flying into the wall before sliding down in pain. Before Rose could do anything, however, Brionne opened a single eye and let out a cry of defiance. A blue glow suddenly surrounded her, and her body began to grow bigger. When the glow disappeared, a white, sea lion with a large blue tail and flowing blue hair stood in her place.
"Brionne just evolved into Primarina!" Rotom cheered. "Primarina, the Soloist Pokemon. With its mouth, it makes sonic waves that sound like beautiful singing. It uses the sonic waves to control its water balloons. For Primarina, every battle's a stage. Its singing and the dancing of its balloons will mesmerize the audience."
"And with that, she's gained the Fairy typing too!" Rose cheered, looking towards Kommo-o. "Alright, Primarina, Moonblast!"
As the Soloist Pokemon began to charge her newly learned attack, Kommo-o was charging up another Thunder Punch, getting ready to charge and finish the water type off. Suddenly, however, Noivern's ears began to glow, and with an explosive reverb, it used Boomburst, the sound bouncing off the cavern walls and hitting every pokemon in the cave, including the Kommo-o. The totem pokemon winced at the sudden soundwave hitting it, and faltered in its attack, and while Nayru and Primarina were also hit by Boomburst, it wasn't enough to stop the Soloist from finishing her preparation. With a loud song, the Moonblast was fired without a hitch, hitting Kommo-o and sending it flying back into a wall, where it slumped over, lacking the energy to pick itself back up.
"...did... did that Noivern just help knock out its own leader?" Rose asked, baffled by the turn of events that just happened.
"Doesn't matter, our trial isn't over yet!" Wes called to her. "We still gotta take it down to finish our trial!"
"Leave it to me!" Nayru called, stepping forward and glaring at the bat dragon. "I owe it for that Shadow Ball it rudely attacked me with!"
However, it seemed the Sound Wave pokemon had other plans. It stood taller than before, shaking itself off of the dust it had accumulated from hitting the ground earlier. Its muzzle twisted into a grin, and it let out a series of squeaks, sounding eerily close to a human's laugh. It then turned around, no longer in an aggressive stance, stretched its wings out, and flew out of the cave, leaving the Kommo-o to weakly lift its head and watch it exit. Without an ally, it seemed that the battle had ended.
"...alright, we won then", Wes muttered, the tone in his voice indicating that he too was baffled by what had just happened.
"That Noivern is heading in the same direction we are", Lillie pointed out, stepping forward now that the trial had come to an end. "Let's follow after it!"
"...I was ignored", Nayru growled, looking displeased with the turn of events. Wes merely shook his head at her before he turned and snatched two Z-Crystals from the pedestal, handing one to Rose. The two trainers then turned and headed towards the cave exit, followed by a sour Nayru and everyone else. As their eyes adjusted to moonlight, Wes could see the steps leading up to the Altar of the Sun were heavily damaged, chunks missing on certain sides. Careful to avoid stepping too close, the three trainers and their Pokemon climbed up, they could hear the Noivern was up ahead, and as they came up and saw the Altar in its entirety, they realized that the Noivern's trainer was there as well.
"Well", Jason said, turning and looking at his students, his hand gently scratching under the Noivern's chin as it cooed in response, "I was wondering when you three would finally get here."
