Gravy.
"The damn nerve of some professionals, can't even get the gender of our twins right." Shadow grumbled as he and Sonic walked out of the hospital at gone one in the morning.
"Yeah it is a very good thing we didn't start stocking up for boys things but the good news is are girls are still very safe considering you fell on your front no more than two hours ago." Sonic said with a relieved tone as he and Shadow stopped outside a little away from the hospitals entrance.
"Still, I was getting fond of the idea of a boy and a girl but you are right, they are fine and healthy which is what matters." Shadow said with some disappointment in his features.
"Babe you are not the only one who is going to be disappointed, Jamie was starting to like the idea of having a little brother. Now we have to tell him he is getting two sisters instead." Sonic said with a small frown.
"Dibs on not telling him." Shadow childishly said with a grin at Sonic.
"One more month, just one more month then I will have my sensible husband back." Sonic thought as he rolled his eyes and took Shadows hand into his.
"Chaos control." Shadow excitedly said then they both vanished.
"Erm Shads why are we at an all night diner?" Sonic asked as they appeared inside the middle of a diner.
"I want pie, no we want pie, so we are getting pie to go." Shadow brightly said with a huge smile at Sonic.
"Right ok, then it's home. You need to rest and we need to relieve Rouge from babysitting." Sonic said with a semi firm look in his eyes at Shadow.
"Agreed so now the big choice, apple or blueberry pie?" Shadow cheerfully said then went into deep thought as he went about deciding what pie he wanted.
"Just get one of each so we can get you home." Sonic sighed out with tiredness as he stood next to his husband.
"Wonderful idea, you are so smart." Shadow happily said then dragged Sonic with him to the front counter to make his order to go.
"So I am smart now huh? Was it not you that said a few days ago I had no brain because I didn't put the mop in the right place then had a huge rant over it that lasted almost a hour?" Sonic thought as he was getting a little annoyed with being here instead of at home.
After getting the pie boxed to go Shadow chaos controlled them both back home and in the kitchen. Sonic quickly made an exit for he knew exactly what his husband was about to do and it was not something that will be pleasant to witness. So as Sonic went to talk to Rouge Shadow boiled the kettle then opened up his special cupboard. He grabbed a jar of what he was really enjoying on everything at the moment and placed it down on the side near the kettle. He got a jug from a different cupboard then scooped some of his special thing into the jug.
"So they got the sex wrong did they?" Rouge asked as she entered the kitchen and left Sonic to check on the kids.
"Yeah the nerve of them but I called dibs on not telling Jamie he has sisters on the way." Shadow casually said as he kept his eyes on the kettle, watching it intensely as it boiled the water inside of it.
"Please don't tell me you are going to make up some instant gravy and pour it over your sweet pies?" Rouge asked with a slightly grossed out look.
"Some instant gravy, Rouge this isn't just some instant gravy but the best gravy in the entire universe. Grandma Chao's chicken gravy is to kill for and I will kill for it." Shadow dramatically said as he turned around and looked at Rouge with some shock to what she called his beloved gravy.
"Sure hun and that would be the kettle telling you it's time for gross things." Rouge grinned with a wink.
"It is not gross, it is a delicacy so there." Shadow said with a sharp nod then turned around to mix up his 'to kill for' chicken gravy.
"I'll keep that in mind Shadow and I'll see you soon ok. Enjoy your after midnight meal." Rouge said pleasantly with an eye roll then began to walk out of the kitchen.
"Of course, everything that is smothered in Grandma Chao's chicken gravy is all round editable. I'll see you soon Rouge and thanks for your help!" Shadow called out as he mixed up the gravy in the jug.
After seeing Rouge out Sonic locked up and took a casual walk to the kitchen. He entered and shuddered as he walked in right when Shadow was pouring generous amount into a bowl that held one of the two pies they got moments ago. He then raised a brow in question when Shadow poured the rest of the gravy into a small glass.
"Please do not say he is going to drink that gravy straight." Sonic thought as he made himself go over to his husband still pouting into a glass.
"Babe, I want you in bed within the hour ok. The kids are fast asleep and I am going to join them in slumber. Enjoy your erm pie and drink?" Sonic calmly said with a forced smile for he was still feeling quite grossed out with the whole gravy pie thing.
"Ok my love and I will join you very soon." Shadow sweetly said with a smile then kissed Sonic on the cheek before getting started with his pie and gravy drink.
A week later…
"Shads how does a takeout sound to ya? I'm personally in the mood for pizza and chilly dogs." Sonic asked as he walked into the kitchen then joined Shadow up the table.
"Sounds nice Sonic actually that reminds me of something deadly important. I need to pick up more chicken gravy, that goes so well drizzled all over cheese pizza. I want cheese pizza with my gravy right now, damn it all." Shadow started off with a causal tone then ended with a pout, crossing his arms and looking unhappy.
"Well at lease he doesn't want his gravy on lemon drizzle sponge cake like the other day. That was not a nice combo and almost made me throw up witnessing that go into his mouth." Sonic thought as he forced a smile at his pouting husband.
"How about we go to the store and pick a few jars up before the kids are home, we do have an hour after all." Sonic suggested as he knew if Shadow did not get his gravy fast then there was going to be a lot of hormone tantrums, chaos energy and possibly a breakdown of tears.
"Yes, to the store!" Shadow called out as he quickly stood up while pointing to the ceiling like some anime character on a mission.
"Babe you have been watching far too many anime movies, you are so over dramatic." Sonic thought as he dared not say that out loud but did follow Shadows movements in standing up.
Five minutes later…
"Come on Sonic you are being far too slow." Shadow said as he was pulling Sonic by the wrist around the supermarket while jogging, looking for his gravy as it seemed the manager decided to rearrange the entire place so nothing was where it normally was.
"Do we really need to go this fast in a supermarket love? I mean we could bump into someone turning a corner or accidentally knock something off a shelf." Sonic said back as he was trying to get Shadow to at least slow to a slightly fast walking pace.
Shadow rolled his eyes and simply ignored Sonic then purposely rushed around a corner making Sonic gasp out as yes someone was just about to turn. Thankfully it was a miss and no one got knocked down or hurt.
"Shadow please just, and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, slow down!" Sonic called in a semi desperate manner but clearly his words never reached Shadows ears.
Or maybe they did for Shadow suddenly stopped in his tracks and looking to his left.
"BINGO!" Shadow shouted out with joy then let go of Sonics wrist.
Or not and the only reason Shadow stopped at all was because he found the section that shelved the instant gravy.
"Oh no, I don't see his gravy there." Sonic thought with inner panic as the jam instant flashed through his mind.
"Sonic." Shadow calmly said as he scanned the shelves quickly.
"Yeah babe." Sonic asked with a slight shiver at the calm before the storm tone of his husband.
"They. Don't. Have. My. Gravy." Shadow lowly growled with anger and chaos energy fizzing in his hands as that anger rose.
"Er maybe they just haven't put any on the shelf yet, hey look an employee. Why don't we just calm down and ask if they have any out back or wherever they store their stock." Sonic suggested as he remained calm so not to trigger Shadow off.
"Fine." Shadow mumbled then stormed over to the poor guy stacking a shelf.
"Hey you!" Shadow called out as he walked over to the guy just trying to do his job in peace.
The guy stopped what he was doing and turned to look at Shadow then gulped.
"Y-yeah, can I help you Sh-Shadow?" The guy asked nervously, having heard all about what happened over twelve years ago.
Shadow growled with narrowed eyes and roughly grabbed the guy by the collar of his shirt. He moved the guy closer so they were face to face with very little room between them both.
"My gravy, where is it?" Shadow lowly said with a very threatening voice as he kept a hold of the poor man just trying to make a living.
"Shadow let the poor guy go!" Sonic called out as he rushed over and grabbed Shadows left arm then really tried to get Shadow to let go.
"My gravy, Grandma Chao's instant chicken gravy, is not there so where is it? And you damn well better not tell me it is out of stock, it is always in stock." Shadow seriously said as he was losing his more sane side very fast.
"Shadow do not make me call your father, let him go and back away from him now!" Sonic seriously demanded in an all too firm tone at his husband.
Shadow growled in frustration and had flattened his ears to his head in a defensive manner. He slowly, very slowly mind you, let the man go and took a couple of steps away from the clearly frightened employee.
"Look I know this is not what you really want to hear but yesterday evening this strange guy came in and asked for all of Grandma Chao's instant chicken gravy, just that flavour. He was willing to pay the manager a lot of money for them and I was made to pack the stuff into the back of the guys van. I'm sorry ok just please don't kill me." The guy nervously said as he took steps away from Shadow who was growling aggressively at what he was hearing.
"Thanks and sorry about Shadow, he's like craving. Come on love lets go find a different store for your gravy before it's time to go get Saffy from school." Sonic apologised with a very sorry smile then began to drag Shadow away towards the exit.
Ten minutes later.
"GRRRRAAAHHH, WHERE IS MY GRAVY!" Shadow shouted out in both rage and frustration as this store was also lacking his wonderful tasting Grandma Chao's instant chicken gravy.
"Maybe the next store will have it?" Sonic said with worry as it looked like Shadow was very quickly losing the very last ounce of calm.
That last ounce was the only thing stopping Shadow from chaos blasting the place.
"It better." Shadow seriously said as he grabbed Sonics wrist and chaos controlled to the last store he knew that sold his very much needed item.
They appeared in the supermarket within the city mall. Shadow stormed further inside and dragging Sonic along, never once losing his determined expression in winning this very frustrating challenge of gravy hunt. When they reached the section that homed the gravy's and such Shadow suddenly dropped Sonics wrist and stared at the notice covering the price of his gravy.
"Sorry we no longer have this item in stock…oh boy." Sonic read the note in a whispered tone then looked over at his husband.
Shadow was still staring at the note with one of his eyes twitching in an insane kind of way.
"Sonic wake me up please because this is clearly a nightmare." Shadow calmly asked as his, one twitching one not, eyes stayed on that hell note, well to him it was.
"Hey why don't we try the beef flavour instead, what do ya say babe?" Sonic anxiously said as he tried to sway Shadow to have something else.
"Yeah ok it didn't work with the jam but it might this time." Sonic thought as he nervously watched Shadow finally break eye contact with that out of stock note and look at the beef flavour instead.
Shadow picked up the beef instant gravy and narrowed his eyes at the glass jar containing instant gravy granules.
"Try a different flavour…TRY A DIFFERENT DAMN FLAVOUR!" Shadow roared out then smashed the jar onto the floor and turned to glare at his husband with anger.
Everyone shopping around froze on the spot and looked at the enraged Ultimate Lifeform, some even backing away out of the isle to safety. By now Shadow was huffing and puffing in anger through tightly gritted teeth. His hands were in fists and slightly shaking as his body slowly began to glow red.
"Try a different flavour you say well that is not good enough. How many times have we both gone through this, how many more time am I going to have to explain to you that a different flavour, brand or item will not be good enough!" Shadow shouted and yes his body was getting brighter.
"Shadow I'm sorry but you need to calm down before you release that blast and seriously hurt everyone here, including me and the babies." Sonic forced a calm voice but deep down he was growing scared of that blast being let go of in a very deadly way.
"I…WANT…MY…" Shadow began then stopped as something caught his attention, sniffing the air softly.
Shadow sniffed the air again, deeper this time, and soon his body went back to normal.
"Do you smell that, my gravy Sonic, I can smell it. Come on quickly." Shadow happily said with a joyful expression then grabbed Sonic's wrist and rushed off, following the smell of his chicken gravy.
"I thought it before and I will think it again, Ultimate mood change. I'm getting too old for all of this. Definitely no more kids after the twins, I swear no more." Sonic thought as he was forced to run out of the store, much to the shoppers delight, and to wherever this smell was.
Apparently in the food court section, according to Shadows nose, was where this chicken gravy was at. Shadow stopped by a single vender selling chips covered in a special chicken gravy mix, so the notice on the side said. Sonic raised a brow and looked at his husband with some puzzlement.
"Say Shads this isn't your gravy. The sign says it's a special homemade mix." Sonic softly said as he kept watching his partner closely.
"Yes it is, this is Grandma Chao's instant chicken gravy. I know the smell anywhere, I am practically living off the stuff." Shadow said with excitement then sniffed the air, letting out a heavenly sigh of contentment.
"What did you say, this gravy is from a supermarket?" A customer waiting in line asked as he looked at Shadow with a small frown.
"Yeah but good luck getting some, we have been everywhere trying to stock up on…wait a minute here." Shadow casually replied to the guy then something clicked in his head, now turning his head to look at the two shifty guys serving up gravy covered chips.
"It's you isn't it? You have been going to every damn store buying every jar of Grandma Chao's instant chicken gravy." Shadow accused the two now very anxious looking men while pointing a finger out to them in a way over dramatic manner.
"Again way too many anime movies." Sonic sighed with a shake of his head.
"What have you got against anime?" Shadow asked with a tilt of his head while looking at his husband, a level of innocence was about him.
"Nothing love but you might want to just get your gravy so we can go pick up Saffy from school then be home for when Jamie gets back." Sonic shrugged as he spoke in a casual manner.
"Right, point taken." Shadow smirked then motioned one of the men to come closer as he moved closer to them.
"Now I wont do a damn thing about what you are doing here but I want some of those jars or I might just call the cops and have you done for fraud and copyright." Shadow whispered to the guy and looking quite devious as he spoke.
Ten minutes later…
"I cannot believe you did that love." Sonic sighed as they appeared home with six unopened gravy jars in a plain cardboard box he was carrying.
"I did what I had to now can you please pass me a jar so I can make a gravy drink to tie me down until dinner." Shadow happily said with a smile as he walked over to the kettle and flicked it on.
"Huh fine but I'm going to make a move to pick Sapphire up from school, just stay nice and relaxed ok love." Sonic said as he placed the box on the kitchen side then got a jar out for Shadow, passing it over before walking out to leave the house.
"Thanks my love and do not threat everything is now completely fine once more!" Shadow called out happily as Sonic walked towards the front door.
"That's a relief." Sonic muttered under his breath while opening the door.
