Chapter Twenty-Two – Invasion

As the dust settled, I found myself observing the group of men coughing in front of me. There were five of them. Civilians. Around us it was all chaos: screams and explosions could be heard in the background. And that was it, everything could only be heard. Where we were was closed off and we could not see anything. Ergo, no one could see us.

"Uzumaki!" my eyes sharpened and snapped to the man calling my name. It was one of those men, dressed in cheap civilian garb and with a bulging belly. "Ye're a shinobi. Ye gotta get us to safety! Get us to the bunker!"

Slowly, I cocked my head at him and his four companions, taking in how they were anxiously shifting on their feet, trying to edge their way completely out of the alley.

Technically, as a shinobi of Konoha, it was my duty to get the villagers to safety during an invasion. That was protocol. Moreover, as a genin, that was the only thing I was supposed to do. And yet…

And yet… I would not have an opportunity like that again. Besides, they deserved what was coming for them.

Mind made up, I took a step forward and completely blocked off their exit.

"What – What are ye doing, demon brat!?" the same man sneered but he could not completely mask his fear as he took a step back, backing up into his companions. Said companions seemed to realise at the same time the kind of situation they found themselves in as they too backed away, getting back unconsciously inside the alley where I herded them. My intentions seemed to be obvious when some of my killing intent escaped, making them tremble where they stood.

It was not too farfetched, really. They should have expected this all those years before. What kind of idiot would I be if I just allowed everything they had ever done to me go?

One was obviously lacking in braincells as he tried to rush me, fist coming up in a clumsy punch. I did not even have to do much; I grabbed his wrist and threw him in the alley, his back skidding across the ground. The others shifted in apprehension; even they were not foolish enough to think their actions would not have caught up to them.

"You… you can't do this," one tried to say, trembling as I slapped a quick paper seal on the wall of the alley, effectively closing off the exit. "You'll be labelled a traitor!"

I hummed, my lips quirking up. I cocked my head and allowed the expression to reach my eyes as I gave them what, in any other circumstances, could have passed as a gentle smile.

"You – you! Monster!"

I let the comment go, knowing there would not be much for them to say very soon. Then what could be heard were only… screams.

I stared down dispassionately at the five broken bodies littering the alley, some completely unrecognisable in their states. None was still breathing and as I stared at what I had done, what could have been compared to a gory, horrifying scene from a horror movie even the most seasoned of watchers would feel sick at, I could not help but feel satisfied and accomplished.

Blood practically soaked me, dripping from my sharpened nails and in the veritable puddle I stood in. I was covered in blood: my elbows down from when I had wrenched my whole arms in one of them; the whole of my torso and the rest of my clothes from when the blood had splattered on me in my carelessness; even on my face, particularly my mouth, from when I had literally torn one's throat with my teeth through my fury.

I did not particularly enjoy torture but their pain had been awfully pleasant to my eyes and ears. This… this was appropriate payback for all the pain they had made me go through all those years before.

I did not know how long I had spent there but no one had come across us, mostly because of my nifty little seal that had camouflaged us quite effectively. Knowing, however, that it would be suspicious if I did not show my face in the efforts to drive off the invasion, I made my way to the entrance of the alley and removed my seal.

Except… well, maybe I should have checked my surroundings before. I was too distracted to notice the little group approaching until they literally stumbled in front of me. I froze. Pained golden eyes slid to me and then behind me, and I waited with bated breath, for once completely unsure how I was supposed to proceed. All the blood on me felt incriminating.

That… I had not prepared for. All my plans, my contingencies… went out the window. There were only few ways this could end.

"Orochimaru-sama," the white-haired, bespectacled teenager said. I flicked my eyes at him before turning them back to the familiar man he held up with his unmoving arm over his shoulders. "They are gaining on us. We need to go."

Pained golden eyes did not move from me, even as his companions prepared to leave.

And then the man gave me his proposition and all I could do was stare.

I accepted.

It was a complete disaster. The Hokage was dead, the village was partially destroyed and though they had managed to drive off the invasion, Konoha hardly felt victorious. Kakashi did not know how to feel; two of his students were in the hospital and one was missing.

Those chuunin and up had known that something was going to happen during this part of the exam, especially after Hayate had been found dead. As a sensei, Kakashi had had to make sure the most likely vulnerable of his students was prepared. After the Forest of Death and after Sasuke had come back with a curse seal on his body, they already knew that he was partly a target. That was why Kakashi had had to make sure the boy was prepared and had had to pawn off his other teammates on others.

Sasuke and he had arrived late because of some last-minute training but not enough for the boy to be disqualified. Naruto had greeted them with his usual enthusiasm and exuberance but Minori had been conspicuously absent. When asked, the blond had informed him that the red-head had left the stadium after his own match. Knowing him, it was probably so as not to be stuck with Naruto for too long alone while waiting for his next match. The kid was predictable like that, Kakashi had found, and despite having grown up with Naruto, he held less patience for him than anyone else. But then again, maybe that was why.

Kakashi had not worried, knowing the boy would make his way back to the stadium sooner or later. Except, when the invasion had started during Sasuke's match, Minori was still nowhere to be seen. Sasuke had run off after the Suna jinchuriki and he had had to send Naruto and the other genins of their year after him with Pakkun.

It was only now, after the enemy had retreated, after the Konoha forces had been informed of the Hokage's death, after Naruto had defeated the Suna jinchuriki, that Kakashi acknowledged that he still could not find his last student. Minori was nowhere to be found and not even Pakkun could find him. The little nin dog had been able to trace his scent to the barbecue restaurant, though the trail had been hours old, but then his scent had completely disappeared.

It was disconcerting but mostly it was alarming. Minori was not one to be taken by surprise but the boy was still a genin. Anything could have happened to him during the invasion. Worst yet, he was a jinchuriki. Someone could have used the confusion and chaos of the invasion to kidnapped him and no one would be the wiser.

And then they found the bodies, closed off in an alley close to the barbecue place. An alley that reeked of Minori's scent.

Things became even more alarming after this. Who knew what could have happened to the boy while no one was looking?

AN: Merry Christmas everyone. I wanted to update at least two of my stories today but unfortunately I've got to leave for family time in an hour. BUT I managed to update this one at least! I'm feeling weirdly inspired for my Naruto fics lately, so you can probably expect another update soon.

This group finally got what was coming for them! I've been waiting to write this part since I started writing this story so many years ago. Except, well, I had more in mind for the torture bit. Initially, I wanted to be more descriptive about that part and the part Orochimaru comes in but I found that it would be too much? For one, I'm not good at writing torture so there's that. For Orochimaru, as I got writing, it felt like if I wrote the actual conversation they would be having would not really fall in the tone I wanted to set for this part of the story...

Oh, and before I forget. There's more to Naruto's fight with Gaara but it'll be addressed in the next chapter.

Leave behind your thoughts and tell me what you think.
