One final short chapter focusing on Jonny and Jac. Thank you for taking the time to read this whole series. I've had a lot of fun writing the promise, the truth, the happy ending and forever and ever. However it really is time for the end of writing in the world of Jac, Jonny, Ava and Julia :-)
'It's lunchtime!' Jonny Maconie sang out as he opened the door to Jac's lab.
'I just need to finish this' Jac mumbled as she continued looking down through a microscope.
Jonny knew better than to interrupt her at an important moment so he remained silent as he laid out their lunch on her desk, carefully moving textbooks and research papers out of the way. His phone vibrated in his pocket and he took it out to read a message from one of his daughters asking him to remind Jac about tonight's party. He typed out a quick reply as Jac walked towards him, drying her hands on a paper towel.
'Jonny when I said we could have lunch together I meant a quick sandwich and a coffee, not a tapas banquet' she rolled her eyes at the picnic spread that was now on her desk.
'Well I thought you and me need to make every second count seeing as you're abandoning me for New York on Monday' Jonny grinned at his wife.
She shook her head as she kissed him. 'It's only for a few days and it was your idea.'
'It was such a good idea' Jonny held out a Tupperware box of olives out towards his wife 'the girls are so excited.'
'You were right they more than deserved a treat, both their exam results proved how hard they've worked' Jac smiled at her husband 'and I probably could do with a little bit of break from my research.'
'It's been a hectic few months with exams and your research taking off, all three of you deserve a bit of down time. Especially before the new term starts in September. One sixth former and one undergrad. They make me feel old' Jonny chuckled.
'Ava is so nervous about starting uni next month, its reminding me of when she started St Catharine's' Jac smiled fondly.
'Och and now our wee miss is grown up. She'll be okay, the uni are making every effort to make sure she'll settle in without a hitch.' Jonny smiled as Jac nodded. They had been reassuring each other like this for the past few weeks, hiding their own nerves from Ava. 'Markus has also been a big help, taking her around the campus, helping her to get her bearings.'
'I'm glad she has him, I know you're not keen on him staying over some nights but I honestly think he'll keep her grounded' Jac talked Markus up, another thing she had found herself doing to reassure Jonny that her decision to allow Markus to sleep over in Ava's room was right.
'I'm still not comfortable with the sleeping arrangements' Jonny shook his head 'but I will agree they are good together.'
'To be honest I wasn't exactly comfortable when Ava told me they'd started having sex' Jac rolled her eyes at her husband 'but the fact is she's sixteen, and she certainly is mature enough to decide what she wants to do with her own body and with whom.'
'He's a good kid' Jonny sighed 'it almost makes it worse that there is nothing I can find to object about him. I can hardly say he's no good for Ava when I'm watching them laughing together at university challenge or when he's making her a hot water bottle to help ease her period cramps or standing in ridiculous poses for her so she can practice her drawing.'
'You could say she's found herself a good supportive man like you' Jac leaned forward to gently kiss her husband's lips. 'I'd rather Ava spent time at home and if having Markus stay over means we get to see her, to make sure she's happy and content, then that is compromise I'm willing to make.'
'Amanda seems to agree with you' Jonny grumbled 'reckons at least we'll see the kids and be on hand to help and advise them in adulthood.'
'It's the best thing' Jac nodded reassuringly at her husband. 'Maybe you and Markus need to do some manly bonding? Take him to the footie or help him to build the telescope he was talking about yesterday.'
'Oh and about that, thanks for giving him permission to take over part of my veggie patch' Jonny half laughed as he shook his head as he remembered the completely geeky conversation Jac and Markus had been having over dinner last night.
'Well it would give the best possible view of the Milky Way' Jac shrugged defensively. 'Anyway its not like you have so much time on your hands to live the good life now you've started working at the ED.'
'Do not change the subject woman!' Jonny laughed.
'So you'll try with Markus?'
'I'll try' Jonny promised. 'So do you reckon you'll make it to the party Amanda is throwing for the kids tonight?'
'I'll be there' Jac nodded 'I've set reminders on my phone and Mo will come down to turf me out if I haven't left by six.'
'It's a big moment for all the girls isn't it really?' Jonny pondered 'Amy off to college, Ava starting uni full time. Izzy and Julia will be in only a handful of girls left to start A Levels at the school.'
'It's a big change for all of them' Jac agreed 'but this is a good change. It's amazing to see them grow into the women they want to be.'
'Well our two have had a pretty amazing role model to show them how to aspire to reach their dreams' Jonny smiled adoringly at his wife. 'A goddess in a lab coat, saving lives with her beautifully skilled hands.'
'Okay, enough' Jac cringed. 'Besides you've set them a pretty good example of how to be kind, patient and forgiving. All the things I'm not.'
'Jac Naylor patient and forgiving you might not be but you have kindness in spades' Jonny laughed. 'Just because you think people can't see past your dark moody exterior to see it doesn't mean that I, and everyone close to you, hasn't noticed or benefited from it. I love you for exactly who you are Mrs Naylor-Maconie.'
'And I love you Mr Naylor-Maconie' Jac spoke softly, smiling at her husband's sweet words. 'We're doing okay, aren't we?'
'We're doing more than okay' Jonny leaned forward and kissed her forehead. 'This is our happy ending Jac, for you, me and the girls. It couldn't be more perfect.'
