CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
Dear Life
"Oh...I don't believe it!" Emma cried, seeing Sumi and Thatch leaning nonchalantly against a wooden signpost at the crossroads in the golden field.
"What?" Sumi just looked at her. "We said we'd meet you here."
"Yeah, but I just realised that I could have teleported too, and not had to walk!" Emma complained. "Thanks a lot, Sumi-Chan!"
"Why's it my fault?" Sumi wanted to know, as Thatch and Ace exchanged a small smile.
"You're supposed to be my guardian angel!" Emma informed her. "That means you look out for me!"
"I never said that!"
"No, I did!"
It's almost as if nothing has changed, even though it has... Robin thought, somewhat amused.
Sumi waited until all of the Straw Hats, Ace, Law, and Emma were standing before her and Thatch. She then said: "Can you guys feel which direction you need to go in, now?"
The thirteen of them exchanged a glance, and then looked at Emma, who nodded, and pointed to her left. "I can feel a strong sense of power in that direction..."
Robin was reading the signpost. "Hmm...it says that in that direction is a powerful entity..."
"It's Life, isn't it?" Emma said softly.
Sumi nodded also, still smiling. "He's been waiting for you."
"Life-Sama will explain to you what needs to be done from here." Thatch added. "Don't worry," he went on, correctly interpreting the look that was exchanged amongst Nami, Usopp, and Chopper. "Life-Sama knows what you'll have to do in regards to getting back down to Level Zero and finding Infinity, and...how you can best approach the other problem..." He glanced at Ace.
"Right, that other problem..." Ace's eyes darkened.
"I know what you're talking about, Ace-Chan, Thatch-San..." Emma said suddenly, looking between the two men and then around at the rest of her friends. "And, you guys can all just leave that other problem to me."
"Absolutely not." Ace and Law said at the same time.
"Guys..."
"I feel that you should exercise some caution in your approach to this matter, Emma-San." Robin said unexpectedly.
And, when Emma glanced at her, she saw a look in the archeologist's eyes that told her that there was something moreto the whole 'Blackbeard is a Demi-God' situation.
Okay, but I know you can read my thoughts, Robin-San...you have to tell us what you know, before we get there...
"Okay!" Sumi spoke up, brightly. "You guys all know where to go from here," she pointed in the direction that Emma had indicated to. "Like I said before, you're not going to be doing this alone - you'll have help along the way. So, there's no need to look so scared...Nami-Chan," the navigator looked startled. "Usopp," the sniper jumped. "And, Chopper-Chan." The reindeer doctor made an 'eep' sound. "So, off you go." She nodded to them all.
"Wait...you're not coming with us?" Ace looked between Sumi and Thatch.
The two exchanged a glance, and then shook their heads. "Not yet," Sumi said carefully. "There are rules that affect all of us up here, you know?" She shrugged.
"No." Said at least five different people.
"What Su-Ko means," Thatch said gently. "Is that we'll see each other again, but that for now you're going to have to do this next bit by yourselves."
"First you say we'll have help along the way," Nami looked at Sumi, before glancing at Thatch. "Then you say we'll have to do it by ourselves?!" She put her hands on her hips. "So, then, which is it?"
Sumi and Thatch exchanged another glance. "Por que no los dos?" They said in unison, as they vanished again.
Nami groaned, and gave Ace a Look that said: This is your fault.
Luffy had already run ahead, thankfully in the right direction this time (he'd gotten lost twice on the way to the crossroads, which was better than Zoro who'd gotten lost twelve times). "Come on, minna!" He shouted excitedly. "I can see the gates!"
"Come on," Nami said, with a small sigh. "Let's go and meet our maker."
"Uh, well, technically..."
"Don't question it, Usopp!"
Even if they hadn't been told to expect to see the God Of Life, it was glaringly obvious when they got to the Holy Gates and saw who was waiting for them that that was who he was.
Life was a tall, slightly tanned man with golden blonde hair that fell in waves to his shoulders. Like Cupid, he also wore a white toga, but unlike the God Of Love, Life's toga gave the impression of a powerful warrior, or perhaps a gladiator. Adding to this appearance were the brown leather gauntlets on his wrist, matching gladiator sandals on his feet, red cape on his shoulders, and the golden leaf crown on his head.
He was waiting for them to the side of a huge pair of golden gates, which seemed to have clouds on the other side of it which also formed a sort of barrier on either side of the gates - the clouds gradually sloped away to join the sky.
Did we...walk uphill? Emma was surprised.
Another thing that surprised her was that, as she got closer to the God that she instantly recognised from the vision that Sumi had shown her, she got an almost overwhelming sense of power from the God Of Life. She wondered why she didn't sense it nearly as much from other Gods like Death and Twister...it was certainly there, with both of them, and just as strong, but it wasn't anything like what she was sensing from Life.
"It's almost like he's using that Haki thing..." Emma heard Usopp whisper to Nami frm the back of their group.
"Can Gods even do that?" Sanji wondered, slowing slightly so that he was walking beside them.
"I'd be very surprised if they couldn't." Was Nami's reply.
When they reached the Holy Gates, Life turned slowly to them.
He had the bluest eyes that Emma had ever seen on anybody (except for maybe Nico Robin) and a face that was even more handsome close up.
"So..." Life said, in that same breathtakingly melodic voice that Emma remembered from her vision. There was something very familiar in the way that he grinned then, and crossed his arms. "You all made it here."
Everyone exchanged a glance, unsure of what to say.
That is, until Luffy grinned. "Yup! Are you that 'Life' guy?"
A few of his Allies looked at him, like they couldn't believe how casually Luffy had just spoken to the God Of Life.
Life, however, had been expecting this kind of casual interaction with Luffy, and responded in kind: "I am. Are you the one who turned the Princess Of Light into a felon?"
Luffy gave Emma an exasperated look. "Oh great, now Life knows!"
As Emma and Ace chuckled, and Law smirked slightly, Nami felt brave enough to ask Life: "S-so, I take it that you see all and know all?"
"No, you're thinking of Santa Claus." Emma interjected, but she was curious too. "Can you?" She asked Life, not quite looking at him.
"To a degree." Life replied. He was still smiling. "However, in this case I know because Yang heard it."
"Yang?" Emma repeated, as a few people looked surprised. "As in, the Sea King...?" Life nodded. "So then...Yin and Yang...that's why you and Death, your eyes..." She trailed off. She wasn't making much sense to her Allies and she knew it.
Life, however, understood perfectly. "Yes." He looked around at the thirteen who were gathered before him. "Now, you all have questions, which I can well understand. However, there is not a lot of time. Therefore, you are limited to one question each." He held up his hand, when Chopper opened his mouth. "Starting from now." He stated, correctly interpreting the reason why the reindeer had glanced at Emma and Nami before starting to speak.
Chopper nodded, and looked up at his Allies.
Emma had already put her hand over Luffy's mouth, to prevent him from speaking too soon, and dragged him a little ways away from the gates. The rest of her Allies followed.
"One question each, huh?" Emma muttered, letting go of Luffy once they were out of earshot of Life. "He wasn't kidding when he said that Life wasn't always fair..."
"Who?" Luffy asked her.
She shook her head quickly. "Never mind, it's not important right now. What's important is...Law-Chan, where did you get that pen and paper?" She wanted to know.
"They just appeared in front of me." Her First Knight replied, shrugging. I feel like we're just going to have to go along with whatever happens in this place...
"How convenient." Nami nodded. "Okay, then write this down - 'what are our means of navigation when it comes to getting through to Level Zero'...yikes!" She cried, because Law had just used his powers to detach her hand...because she'd told him what to do, even as he obeyed her.
"Law-Chan, please don't torture the navigator like that." Emma sighed, as Law returned Nami's hand to her wrist and she edged away to place Sanji in between her and Law. "And, also, do you happen to by any chance remember what the other Levels were like?"
Law nodded. "Hai, Hime. In reverse order it's Mountain, Desert, Hills, Ocean, Snow, and Forest."
"Seems that we really are going to have to go through them like that, doesn't it?" Emma realised.
"Seems so." Law agreed.
Around them, the rest of their Allies were reacting to this information.
"Six more Levels..." Nami sighed. Great...
"Isn't there some kind of a shortcut?!" Usopp exclaimed.
"Why can't we just teleport like Sumi and Thatch did?" Chopper asked.
"Just how big are these Levels, anyway?" Zoro wanted to know.
"Are their names indicative of what they're like?" Sanji had somehow gotten a cigarette from somewhere.
"Hmm..." Robin looked thoughtful.
"What's going to happen when you seven get to the Ocean?" Franky motioned to the Devil Fruit users.
"Yes...considering that, apparently, we were supposed to have lost our Devil Fruit powers when we died..." Brook mused, and then he laughed. "Yohohoho, I wonder if this means I have escaped from meeting Death-San again?"
"Yeah, and what did Life-Guy mean when he said that stuff about him and Death and Emmy's Dragons?" Luffy wondered.
"They're Sea Kings, Luffy." Emma reminded him. "Also, I think that Law-Chan just wrote all of that down..."
They all turned to see that he had, and was walking back towards where Life was waiting for them.
"Hey, wait a minute!" A few people said, as they hurried after him. "Don't just decide things on your own!"
Life was still smiling when he faced them all. "I have no doubt in my mind that you thirteen will succeed in your mission." He was calmly gazing around at them, and then he looked at Nami. "No mission can succeed without a sense of direction. Your strengths will play an important part in getting you through the six Levels. I also know your true question, Nami," he went on, and she looked surprised. "And, all I can advise you is to remember where each of your strengths are from."
As Nami pondered this, Life turned to Zoro and Sanji. "The Levels can be as big or as small as you make them, Zoro. The only limit will be yourselves." This, somehow, seemed to make sense to the swordsman. "In saying that, Sanji is correct in assuming that the Levels are all named for what they are. It makes it easier, that way."
"Says the guy who can probably just teleport wherever he wants to go." Usopp whispered to Chopper, and then cringed when Life turned to them.
"Usopp, there are no shortcuts," the god said calmly, shaking his head. "In anything. And, in this case, it is because there are things that you must learn along the way, in order for you to succeed in the end. And, on that same note, Chopper, you cannot just teleport. That would defeat the purpose."
"I guess so..." Chopper reluctantly agreed.
"Furthermore," Life went on. "You do not have the capabilities to transport between the Levels like that..." He looked over at Robin. "You will be given other tools to help you on your quest, though, Robin."
Robin nodded.
"Including when you arrive in the Ocean realm, Franky." Life looked at Franky, now. "Think of it as another adventure, and don't forget about the lessons. Your friends who are Devil Fruit users will be fine."
"Super!" Franky exclaimed, grinning.
"So," Brook spoke up. "The reason that we are not able to teleport...nor do we have wings and a halo..."
Life turned to look at Brook, and nodded. "Is as you said, Brook." He confirmed.
"Yohohoho...please give Death-San my regards that I did not get to meet with her again."
"I will..."
Meanwhile, a few of the others were staring at Brook in shock, although it made perfect sense that Brook would have already met the Goddess Of Death.
Vivi, however, was now staring at Life in completely unmasked shock. "D-does that mean...?" She couldn't seem to say the words. "We're not dead...?"
Life's gaze remained calm, but his blue eyes glittered. "Yes, Vivi. That is correct."
"And...?"
"You'll have to figure that out for yourself." Life's tone was gentle.
Vivi nodded, in a determined way.
Luffy was looking between Vivi and Life, but then focused in on Life when the god addressed him.
"Luffy, there's a lot of things that connect this world with yours." Life informed him. Emma suddenly realised how Life was switching the way that he was talking, depending on whom he was addressing. She was amazed that the god could do that so effortlessly and still sound, well, like a god. "Of course, you're wondering why one of those links is something that would usually kill you."
Luffy grinned. "Yup...also what it has to do with Emmy." He pointed to the red-head. "She knew that song from before..."
Life nodded. "That's because the song that comes from the Celestial Realm is something that Emma's Mother used to sing it to her."
That's what Daddy said... Emma swallowed, and noticed that Ace was looking at her.
"And, yes, Ace," Life now addressed the shirtless pirate. "That is because the one known in that world as Edward Undine was originally from here."
"H-how could you have not known that Emiko was her daughter, then?!" Ace suddenly exclaimed. He didn't sound angry, just slightly upset, and he kept on glancing back at Emma.
"Daijoubu, Ace-Chan..." Emma whispered, taking his hand. "It's alright. We'll figure it out when the time is right." She told him.
Ace took a deep breath, recognising the scent of the flower in Emma's hair as hibiscus. "Right..." He said slowly. "Arigatoo..."
"Life-Ya," Law spoke up suddenly. "In saying that..."
Life looked over at him. "I'm afraid I can't answer that, Law." He shook his head.
"Ask him something else?" Emma whispered. "Ask him about his daughter. That is, of course, just a suggestion." She added, hiding her hands behind her back, and Law smirked.
Life's expression flickered briefly. "Yes...Little Death...I am sorry for all of the trouble that she has caused you...and, now, she is the one who is in danger."
"Life..." Emma began.
"No." The god shook his head, sounding firm. "Emma, I cannot ask you to do that, not after everything that has already happened."
"I'm going." Emma said, just as firmly. "To the Cave Of Phosphorescent Flowers."
"The cave of what flowers now?" Luffy wasn't even going to attempt to say the name.
"It means that they glow in the dark." Nami informed him, before she realised something. "Hey...what if it's the same cave that we were in before?" She asked Luffy and Sanji. "Before we got taken to Em's past?"
"It's possible that it's connected..." Sanji said slowly. "However..." He glanced at Emma. Let's wait and hear what Emma-Chan's reasons are for this...
"Twister told me that he and Little Death were attacked," Emma told them all. "He said that she went back to the place where she was born - to that cave. Twister is really close to Little Death, and wanted to go and make sure that she was alright...Death agreed to this, but, I didn't have a chance to ask them about it when I saw them just before..." Emma trailed off.
"Who were they attacked by?" Luffy wanted to know.
"By the God Of Darkness and his First Knight." Emma replied, and thought that she saw Robin's eyes widen ever so slightly. "This...I feel like this all happened because I wasn't able to kill him and his crew on that day, and my God I tried..." She muttered.
"Wait..." Nami was staring at Emma, horror dawning on her face. "Are you saying that...?"
"No...not him..." Chopper's eyes widened.
Life sighed. "There are a few ways that we Gods can come into being - and, occasionally, it happens to mortals as well. In this case, the one known as Marshall D. Teech has been granted semi Divinity by Infinity."
"Wait, so now we have to kill two gods?!" Usopp exclaimed.
"Oh, why'd it have to be him?" Nami shook her head. This is bad news, how could this have happened?!
"I told you to leave it all to me." Emma said loudly. "I'll save Little Death, stop Teech and his crew because they're probably here too, get those scythes back and use Little Death's to close up the Well Of Chaos, and stop Infinity before it's too late!" She was breathing slightly heavily, and staring at the golden grass at her feet. Her voice was shaking, but there was a great amount of strength in it as well. "Death said...that there was something that only I could do, and by the Gods I am going to do it!"
"Okay. We're not gonna stop you. Just...don't forget about us, okay?" Luffy said suddenly, stepping up to her. "Emmy?" He questioned, when she wouldn't look at him. "Remember? Nakama..." He held out his hand.
She finally looked up at him, and the hesitant look in her eyes was met with the firm look in Luffy's own eyes.
"I really don't want you guys to die..." She whispered. "That's why I didn't tell you..."
Luffy grinned. "Shishishishi, don't worry about us! That's what Nakama are for!"
She finally smiled. "Right..." She agreed, taking his hand. "Nakama..."
Wait...did she decide...? Zoro stared at Emma, wondering how he'd feel about it if she had decided to join their crew. Luffy seemed pretty firm on Emma's recruitment, and the rest of the crew had accepted her fairly quickly...in fact, Zoro realised, that trying to imagine the Straw Hat Pirates without Emma was like trying to imagine them without any one of them...even Luffy. It simply couldn't be done. Zoro knew then what his feelings were, which was why he put his hand over Emma's and Luffy's, and agreed: "Nakama."
Nami nodded, speaking up before Emma could protest. "That's right, we're in this together." She put her hand over Zoro's. "Because that's what we do." She added softly. "Trust me, Em, I know..."
"You guys..." Emma bit her lip slightly.
Usopp jumped in. "One of the best parts about about it all is that somebody's always got your back!" He put his hand over Nami's.
"That's what we've been doing anyway!" Chopper had climbed up onto the fence that was conveniently right there to give him a boost, and put his cloven hoof over Usopp's hand.
"And, we'll continue to, Emma-Chan." Sanji was quick to say, as he put his hand over Chopper's hoof. "If you want to save Little Death-Chan, then, we'll help you in whatever way we can."
"Oh, I LOVE you guys!" Franky was, of course, crying manly tears, as he placed his hand on top of Sanji's. "You're just so SUPER!" He added loudly, managing to strike a pose with just one hand free.
Robin, in contrast, silently placed her hand on top of Franky's, but the look in her blue eyes told Emma that she was in agreement with everything that had just been said.
"Yohohoho, my heart would be so touched right now...if I weren't a skeleton without vital organs!" That was Brook, of course, as he placed his skeletal hand on top of Robin's tanned hand.
"It's more of a feeling...one that that won't ever go away." Vivi stepped forwards, and placed her hand on top of Brook's, although she seemed to be slightly sad about something; she was biting her lip, too.
She's worried about Carue. Emma realised, just as Su-Chan woke up, looked around in slight confusion, and then reached up with one stubby arm and touched the side of Vivi's hand.
"Aww." Emma, Vivi, Nami, Usopp, and Chopper all said.
Su-Chan just shrugged and went back to sleep.
"Wait, so...if we're not all dead, then why is the Baby DenDen Mushi?" Ace said suddenly. It really does look even more like Sumi, now...
"Probably because it's not one of the thirteen." Law stated flatly, although he stepped forwards then and placed his hand on top of Vivi's. He looked at Emma, as he added: "Allies." There was a look behind his silvery eyes that she recognised.
She looked back at Law before letting her gaze slide over to Ace. The Whitebeard Pirate met her gaze steadily, as he came over to them and placed his hand on top of Law's. Note to self: wash hand later. "Family."
Luffy looked surprised for a second, before he grinned. "Oh, yeah, all of that, too!"
"Don't make it seem like an afterthought!" Nami scolded him, as they all stepped back and then turned to Life.
The God Of Life was staring at Emma with an unreadable expression on his face, and had been for the last few minutes.
This young Demi-God...is prepared to help us despite refusing to accept the fact that she is one of us. Despite everything she knows that our kind has put her and these mortals through. I wonder, though...would she still be saying all of that...if she knew the truth surrounding her past, and why these things are happening now? Perhaps this is why Boss has decided against telling her the whole truth...but, what even the Almighty One has yet to realise...is that he can't stop the Princess Of Light from finding out the truth...as soon as she sets foot in the Forbidden Zone...
Life did not reveal any of what he was thinking, as he stepped aside, and gestured to the Holy Gates. "The Traveller's Compass," he indicated to the compass around Emma's neck. "Is the key to traversing through each of the Levels. When used in conjunction with Grace's Heart," the ruby necklace around Emma's neck seemed to glow in response to this. "It will give you the power that you need, when the time is right." He then glanced at Vivi and her sapphire necklace. "That necklace, too, holds many questions. It is up to all of you to uncover the answers."
Vivi nodded.
"My Mother's necklace..." Emma said. "Keep it." She added, as Vivi's eyes asked a silent question. "I want you to have it, Vivi-Chama..."
"Ne, Emma..." Vivi smiled slightly, as they walked up to the gate. "When I heard Undine say the name of one of her friends, I saw you react when you found out that the friend was a Queen..."
"Oto-Chama..." Emma remembered.
"Did you know that she was referring to Queen Otohime, the Mermaid Queen?"
"That would not surprise me one little bit." Ace said. "After all, Fishman Island is under Oyaji's protection..." He frowned slightly. "But...Queen Otohime...nine years ago..." He trailed off. I never got to meet her, but Oyaji mentioned her from time to time...
"Well..." Vivi said diplomatically, as Emma stepped forwards on her own and placed one hand on her compass and the other in the Holy Gates. "Maybe we'll get to meet her here."
"Meet the Queen of the Mermaids?" Sanji's eyes lit up.
"That," Luffy stated . "Would be awesome."
"I wonder what she's like..." Usopp mused.
And, Nami couldn't help saying: "I wonder if she knew Kokoro-San?"
"Why?" Vivi asked innocently.
"Because Kokoro-San also happens to be a Mermaid." Nami replied, and enjoyed the stunned looks that she got from Sanji, Luffy, and Usopp .
Rainbow-coloured light began to emit from Emma's compass, as she focused her powers and the gates began to open.
"Once you step through there," Life was saying. "You will find yourself on Level Six. The Mountain realm." He added, just as the rainbow light hit the thirteen Allies, who suddenly found themselves dressed in attire more suited for adventuring and...mountain climbing.
"Another cliff-wall." Law remarked, with a smirk.
"Ohh..." Nami, Usopp, and Chopper groaned, as they realised what this actually meant.
"Hey, how come you're not complaining, Emiko?" Ace said casually, as they felt themselves starting to vanish. Not that I'm happy about Emiko mountain-climbing again...
"Because I still haven't asked him my question!" Emma, who was now sporting goggles instead of her glasses and looked like she was more ready to fly a plane than climb a mountain, sounded frantic. "Life!"
They could hear Life chuckling, which sounded like golden bells, as the white clouds enveloped them. "Yes, Emma, your Nanna told me once that I sing like Chad Kroeger, although Faith believes me to sound more like Shaun Morgan. We can all agree, however, that my partner Death sings like Amy Lee."
"I knew it." Emma declared triumphantly, ignoring the different Looks that she was getting from her Allies. Only Brook seemed to understand the importance of knowing any of this.
Emma had another thought, too, though.
I wonder if Faith came from my world, too...she seemed to know it well enough...
Faith was, right now, watching as Twister walked through a portal, his expression (what she could see of it) unreadable.
"Is good news...or...no?" Faith whispered, her amazing blue eyes looking at the God Of Change.
"Well..." Twister said slowly. "It'ssss...newssss..."
"You come back before your power restore itself completely." Faith accused him, but her eyes showed concern. Something had changed for the Gods...they were still disconcerted by Twister, but...undoubtedly, things had changed. "Twister...what happen?"
Twister sighed. "It'ssss Jimbe..."
Faith's eyes widened. "The Knight Of The Sea..." What has happened...to her Knight?! "You ask Marco The Phoenix where Jimbe is?" Twister nodded. "And...?"
"It sssseemssss that he vanisssshed after Emma interrupted the battle at Marineford..." Twister said, somewhat carelessly, but the fingers of his left hand twitched slightly, like he would usually be curling them around his scythe at the moment. He always did that when he was stressed. It was a small thing, but his fellow gods could notice it. "I have, however...thissss..." And, he produced a small piece of paper.
Faith stared at it for a second. It was unassuming by all appearances, looking like it had been torn off from a bigger piece but, as she watched, the paper moved slightly between Twister's fingers (with the black-painted nails) and shuddered slightly, pointing in a direction that seemed to lead off into the red and black abyss.
"Thissss issss that thing that the mortalssss call a Vivre Card." Twister explained.
"So this what one look like...oh, my...Jimbe..." Faith whispered. "He come here without any of us knowing it...?"
Twister's black-painted lips tugged upwards in somewhat of a smile just then. "Everyone sssseemssss to underesssstimate the power of Firsssst Knightssss...however..."
"This place he need be..." Faith said slowly. "Even if lead to his downfall, he know that he need be here."
"The trouble issss...that he'ssss not the only one who knowssss thissss..." Twister replied.
Faith didn't say anything but Boss, who had just appeared behind her, did.
He didn't mention anything about the fact that his sunglasses were cracked (he'd go and get another pair after) and that he had two blood tracks on his face like red tears - even Faith had a trickle of blood down her own chin that she hadn't bothered to wipe away yet. The divine power that was being exhibited by the other problem was living up to its name - it was becoming more than just a problem.
Which was why they needed to ensure that Undine's First Knight was safe.
"We need to find out where he is."
Author's Notes:
This chapter was meant to be a part of the next chapter, but I may end up writing the Allies journey through the Levels as a few chapters...
So, when Life sings he sounds like either the lead singer of Nickelback or the lead singer of Seether.
When Death sings, she sounds like the lead singer of Evanescence.
For a duet, I suggest THIS song: youtu . be / hPC2Fp7IT7o
