National City's Newest Hero
Barry and Kara were finished with their takeout and were lounging on the couch. Barry was sitting up at one end while Kara had stretched out her body and laid beside him, head in his lap. They were half way through a movie and Barry could tell from the snore that Kara was nowhere as into the movie as he was. He chuckled to himself but apparently it was just enough to wake Kara from her power nap. She tried to play it off as if she had been awake the whole time, but Barry had a feeling it was time to hit the bed.
"You know we can finish the movie another time," he suggested just as Kara yawned," or not at all," he grew a smile.
"No, we can finish it," she rubbed her eyes, "it's a good movie."
"Oh yea, what's happened in the last ten minutes," he asked her playfully
Kara was quiet, knowing she was caught, "uhh, there was a ring and some guy named Gerry the Wizard?" Barry burst out laughing.
"That's close enough, but for real we can wait till some other time, you need sleep before work and this movie still has some time to it."
"It's not that long is it?" Barry paused the movie and the timer for the remainder of the movie showed there to be at least another two whole hours left. He turned his head and raised an eyebrow. Kara's eyes went wide and she just nodded, "Yeah, maybe we finish it later." She hopped up and made her way to the bathroom while Barry cleaned up the living room. Once he was done, he entered the bedroom and changed into some shorts and sat on the side of the bed checking his phone as he waited for Kara.
As he was scrolling through his phone, he noticed a red-light dart within his peripheral. He looked up and looked around the room. He didn't see anything and went back to his phone. After a second he saw it again, this time he could tell it came from outside the window. He stood up and stepped out onto the small balcony attached to the room. He examined the area and didn't see anything that resembled a red light. As he turned he then noticed something. Someone. As he stared across to a rooftop all he could see were the glowing red eyes yet he could still feel a grin being thrown his way. Without even thinking Barry found himself speeding to the rooftop in nothing but shorts. He stopped exactly where the man was standing on the roof, however he was alone. He panned the roof, the nearby streets and other rooftops but there was no sign of him.
"Barry?" he hear his name be called from behind. Kara was floating just about the rooftop, looking concerned. "What's wrong, why are you out here in just shorts."
Barry took a minute, still looking around before realizing how dumb he was for just running off without clothes and a mask. "I'll explain back at your apartment," he nodded to her place and they both popped back in through the balcony window. Barry's mind was racing. "Wait, how'd you know where I was," he asked
"I saw you speed out just as I entered the room. I went to the window to see where you had gone and then flew over. What were you doing."
Barry was still shaken, from anger, fear and paranoia. "I saw Thawne." He explained to her what he had seen and his attempt to catch him which obviously didn't work.
Kara would see how uneasy Barry was and tried to reassure him. She attempted to get him to go to bed and take his mind off of it but even she knew that was a long shot. Barry then told her to stay inside until he got back, immediately letting her know that he knew she could take care of her self but that Thawne was unpredictable. She was gonna comment but she could see in his eyes that he really just wanted her safe so she agreed. She waited for what only seemed like a minute or two before Barry had reappeared back in her bedroom.
"I went and grabbed a metahuman detector from Star Labs," he set it up on the nearby side table, "Makes it's a bit easier to sleep knowing I have a way to tell if he shows back up." He slid into bed next to Kara and wrapped his arms around her.
The next morning Kara awoke to a sweet smell of coffee and syrup. The sun broke through the curtain and hit her face which seemed to fill her with more energy than usual. She leant up and stretched her arms. She bounced out of bed and made her way to the bathroom for a quick shower and ready her self for the day. After she was done she was dressed and in the kitchen where Barry was typing away on his laptop. She admired how even on his off days he never rested with trying to fit some CCPD work in. She gave him a kiss on the forehead, ate her food and made for Catco. She let him know when she'd be off and left.
After the door shut Barry's smile melted and he slumped over to the couch for a nap. He didn't want Kara to know but after he was sure she was passed out the night previous he had gotten up and patrolled the city. Even with the meta detector he knew Thawne always had tricks up his sleeve and he didn't wanna risk it. Barry had lost track of time and even where he was until he noticed the sun break over the horizon. He checked and he had realized his patrol had taken him from the inner city out to the countryside. He had swept the whole area and got nothing. Once he realized what time it was he raced back to Kara's apartment before she could wake up and made it seem like he was there the entire time.
He must have passed out as soon as his head hit a pillow because it was a couple hours later when he woke up. He got up, changed into fresher clothes and tried to find something to keep busy while he waited for Kara. He was about to go back to working on what he was doing earlier until he received a text from Alex.
'Hey Barry, Kara told me you were in town and I was wondering if you could help out with some DEO stuff'
Barry was happy to help and within a minute he was in his suit and standing beside Alex in the DEO. She still had her phone in her hands when she noticed Barry next to her. "That was quick." Barry flashed her a smile and asked what he could do. "Nothing major, actually it's not really DEO but I know Kara has been in hot water with Carr at work with disappearing to help the city so I figured since we have another hero in town that the city loves just as much as Supergirl I was wondering if you could just help around the city so she could get work done."
"Absolutely," Barry responded happily, "Just give me an ear-piece and I'll get to work." Alex ordered for a comms set for Barry and told him that Winn would be letting him know if or when something came up and to otherwise just go about his day. He nodded and headed back to the apartment, but it wasn't long until Winn let him know the city needed saving. After a few robberies, car accidents and a pet in a tree Barry had noticed it was close to when Kara got off. He popped back into the DEO to drop off his comms but as he made his was to leave, alarms started going off.
"Winn what's going on," Alex asked.
"Attack in the park. Prisoner from Fort Rozz." Winn reported as he started bringing up video footage of a reptilian looking figure. The alien had to be at least eight feet tall and had a slender body. "Records show that its an Igoka, a lizard type species." The attacker was causing a panic, tossing food carts and snarling.
"Alright I'm calling Kara," Alex was just about to make the call before Barry butt in.
"Wait, I can handle it."
"Barry I appreciate the help you've done but this is an alien not a meta."
"True but I've taken on an alien or two and beside I got Winn on comms," he gave Winn a fist bump who nearly blushed of geekiness.
"No, there's no way I'm sending you out there without proper training."
"I'm sorry Alex but," and before she could protest Barry sped out of the DEO and to the park. Once he was there he tapped his comms and all he could hear for the for ten seconds were Alex yelling in the background. "Winn, tell what I'm facing."
"Well later, the wrath of Alex Danvers but right now this thing is a reptile like alien. It's extremely fast, dangerously flexible and has venomous claws, so don't get scratched."
Barry sped around and cleared the park of civilians before stopping in front of the alien. From the footage he only saw the creatures backside, up close he noticed that the monstrous figure belonged to a female. She towered over him, scales covers her upper forearms and sides of her face. She had slitted eyes and a wicked smile.
"I was looking for the girl of steel," she hissed," not some guy in a body suit."
"Wow, that hurt. Really, I thought we could have a lovely chat and get some coffee." The alien hissed and ripped a park bench up and hurled it his way. He dodged it with ease and appeared behind her. "Ok maybe not a coffee, what do lizards like to drink?"
"Not thirsty, but I could use a light snack," she sprung in his direction and he was so surprised at just how fast she actually was she nearly caught him with her nails. He dodged out of the way and made some distance.
"Damn Winn you weren't kidding, she is fast."
"Yea why would I joke," Winn retorted," look hold her off for just a few minutes. Alex and a team are on there way to you, once they are there they can take her into custody."
Barry nodded to himself and ran at the alien. She was fast but not as fast as him now that he knew was to expect. He sped around her and took pot shots. He thought he was doing fine until on another pass by she managed to duck his swing and throw a leg out of trip him, sending him rolling across the ground. Next thing he knew she was on top of him, pinning his arms and legs to the ground.
"Looks like the tables have turned," she gave him a snakey smile," it's a shame, you're actually kind of cute."
"You think so? So that coffee still a thing?" Barry tried to bide time. She rolled her eyes which gave him the opening he needed. He phased an arm out of her grip and swung a punch, connecting with her jaw. That did nothing but seem to upset her. She grabbed his arm and pinned it under her other, giving her a free hand.
"Now, you just pissed me off." She ripped part of his sleeve off and ran a nail/claw across his arm. As soon as it pierced his skin pain instantly shot up and through to his shoulder. He screamed and felt his arm deaden. "Aw did that hurt. I'm sorry, let me put you out of your misery." She was about to plunge her claws into his chest before he heard yells from across the park. The alien turned and sprung off of Barry. He leaned up and saw Alex and the other DEO agents shooting at the alien as she darted back and forth dodging blasts and knocking down guards.
"Stand down now!" Alex shouted but to no avail. The reptilian slammed into Alex and knocked her to the ground. She knew she was outnumbered so she made an attempt to flee but Barry did his best to fight through his pain and ran her down. He raced around and threw a bolt of lighting which caught her in the back and sent her to the ground. Barry grabbed the pair of cuffs an officer had dropped and placed them on the alien.
It took no time for the agents to book the unconscious criminal and place her in the back of a truck heading for the DEO. Alex approached Barry and punched him, "If you ever do something that stupid again I'll shoot you." she snapped. It was after she punched him she noticed how much that light punch hurt him. She then noticed the ripped sleeve and the cut he had gotten which was looking infected faster and faster. She tried saying something but all Barry heard would muffled noises before everything went blurry. Next thing he knew he was awake in the DEO med bay, iv in his arm and Alex and Kara at the foot of the bed. It sounding like they were quietly arguing and when they noticed Barry shift around they focused on him.
"Thank Rao, you're ok," Kara came to his side and hugged him. She was suited up which only led him to believe she had a hand in getting him back to the DEO.
"Yea, I'm fine. I heal fast remember."
"Well, even with those powers of yours if we hadn't gotten you back in time and I hadn't of had the antivenom," Alex gave him a pissed look," you wouldn't be here."
"He wouldn't be here if you hadn't let him go out there," Kara remarked
"I told you- "this restarted whatever they were previously arguing about. Barry kept trying to pipe in but would be drowned out. It wasn't until he sprang out of bed, sped around the room and move the two sisters a few feet apart.
"GUYS," he raised his voice which quieted the room. "Kara, I chose to help with keeping the city safe while you worked to make your day easier. When this alien popped up, I told Alex I could handle it, she told me not to get involved and was gonna call you, but I ignored her and went anyway. She's not to blame I am." He calmed Kara down and turned to Alex," and Alex I'm sorry I didn't listen. You're right and I don't have the training to take on aliens. Thank you for patching me up." The two sisters shared a stern look to each other before approaching Barry. Then, at the same time, they both punched him in the shoulder. "Ow," for a normal human, Alex's punch almost matched that of Kara's. They both seemed to forgive each other and then chewed him out for a few minutes.
After the heated words and a quick diagnosis from Alex, they confirmed that Barry was just as healthy as he was that morning and Kara and Barry made their way out of the DEO and back to the apartment to change. Barry could tell Kara was still upset with him and the last thing he wanted was for the rest of the day be spoiled because of his stupidity.
"Kara, I said I'm sorry and it won't happen again I promise," he wrapped his arms around her waist," please don't be mad."
Kara didn't pull away but she did keep her arms crossed, " I'm just upset that you would go out and do something reckless but when it came to last night with this Thawne guy you didn't want me to leave my own apartment."
"Kara that is completely different," he tried to defend himself but that's when she moved away.
"How? My enemies are your enemies but your's aren't mine?"
"No that's not it, it's just-"
"Then what? I appreciate you wanting to keep the city safe I really do it's the sweetest thing, but fighting that alien was too much."
"I understand that and I won't do it again but-"
"But what Barry we are adults there shouldn't be a b- "
"Because I love you," Barry cut her off this time. "Because I love you and you are the best thing to happen to me in a long time and every time, I have something or someone like you in my life it gets taken away from me." Barry tried his best to stay calm with all the emotions swirling around him, " and with Thawne showing up, he's one of the biggest reasons why I've lost so much and knowing that he knows about you and us and everything else, I'm just afraid he'll try to take you from me too." Barry felt what could only be tears about to start falling but Kara was just quick enough to dash over and hug him.
"No one is taking me from you," the two of them stood there just holding each other, "whatever comes our way, we can both take it head on. No matter how fast or how strong, we make each other better and I know that we will make it through anything."
Barry felt his body melt into a comfortable state of mind, knowing that Kara meant what she said, and he believed it too. He loved her so much that he nearly ignored what Iris had said yesterday and almost propose then and there but he chose against it. After they had their moment, the two finally got themselves together and headed out the door for a day of fun and relaxation.
They had managed to kill four hours before they had even known it. They saw a movie, played a around of mini golf where both of them tied even though Barry caught Kara cheat with the scores, but he didn't care. They visited the city museum, art gallery, zoo and every other tourist attraction Kara could think of. The sun was beginning to set and they both expressed how hungry they were and decide to end the night with Big Belly Burger.
"I love the shakes here so much," Kara spoke through every other sip of her straw.
"I could tell seeing as you've stolen mine," he laughed.
"You weren't gonna finish it and cookies and crème is my second favorite."
Barry just smiled. They were finished with their food and were just sitting there recalling their favorite parts of the day. After spouting off about what was the best day they've had in ages, Kara sat up straighter. They had sat across from each other, so she had to stretch her arm over the table to hold his hand.
"Hey, I just wanted to thank you again for what you did today. Trying to help me out so that I wouldn't be in hotter water with Carr at work. It really was super sweet of you"
"I'd do it again in a heartbeat," he squeezed her hand
"I bet, which is also why I'm sure you'd attempt to try and fight another alien even though I'd ask you not to so," she got serious, " I would really appreciate it if before you did, you'd at least call me for back up and maybe do some training with me. please?"
Barry smiled and nodded," of course. I promise." Kara seemed happier and reached into her pocket and pulled out a nice-looking watch and gave it to Barry. He must have looked puzzled and frightened because Kara immediately spoke up.
"Don't worry you didn't forget a special day or anything. Press the button on the side." Barry did so and the watch popped open, raising the face to reveal a single button in the shape of the symbol on Kara's suit. "Press it once and I'll know to fly over as fast as I can, press it twice and I'll know not to come."
Barry loved it and closed it. He fixed onto his wrist and leant over to give her a kiss. "Well I figured this would be a good time to also say that, while you need no help with meta-humans, if you wanna help me with Thawne I'd appreciate it if you'd train with me, so you know what to be up against with a speedster." Kara nodded and they both shared a smile. After they threw away their trash, they made their way outside and began walking back, holding hands.
They had only gotten a block away when a man accidentally bumped into Kara, causing him to drop some books. "oh I am so sorry, I'm clumsy today."
"oh no worries, here let me help," Kara bent down and helped the man pick of his books. Once they stood back up the man gave her a big smile and then looked at Barry.
"Well hello, Barry."
"You two know each oth-" Kara glanced at Barry who's eyes had lightning dancing inside of them. "Barry?" she then looked back at the man.
He looked back at her and continued to smile. Suddenly his eyes began glowing red and his voice reverberated in a way Kara recognized. "Nice to meet you again Girl of Steel." His eye's and voice went back to normal and he held out a hand. "I take it lover boy has told you about me." He held out a hand, "Eobard Thawne."
