Chapter 37: Fear vs. Will
"My name is Hal Jordan. I'm a test pilot for Farris Aircraft Defense contractor.
"4 years ago, I discovered a wounded alien by the name of, Abin Sur, in what appeared to be a spaceship. He claims he was part of an organization called the Green Lantern Corps.
"He presented me with a ring. The ring is a piece of advanced technology capable of generating imagined constructs out of pure energy. The ring then enveloped me in energy and I quoted a mysterious oath when it touched a handheld lantern that fit the ring's markings.
"Millions of years ago the Guardians of Oa, who claimed to be the Guardians of the whole universe, created my ring and then entrusted it's wearer with the protection of the sector of the universe that I am currently in.
"Fearlessness was the job description. I did not seem to fit the job description. But when The fear-inducing Entity and World-killer, Parallax, threatened to destroy Earth I overcame my fear and used the power of the ring and saved the world from Parallax. Now I use the ring and all of its powers to protect Earth and my home town of Coast City against any evil that threatens those I love!
"I am, The Green Lantern!"
Earth 38, Voldemort's hideout -
Voldemort was again pacing back and forth. He was disturbed. His faithful Death Eaters surrounded him with worried looks on their faces.
"Master." said Bellatrix Lestrange.
But Bellatrix's husband Rodolfus stepped in front of Voldemort with a look of anger on his face.
"You are losing your touch My Lord!" said Rodolfus in a firm criticizing voice.
Lucius Malfoy then stepped in front.
"Don't talk to the Dark Lord like that!" reprimanded Lucius.
But Voldemort raised his hand in silent reprimand to silence Lucius.
"No." said Voldemort. "Let's hear what Rodolfus has to say."
They all looked at Rodolfus and waited.
Rodolfus looked Voldemort right in the eye and stood up a little straighter.
"My Lord, we, your faithful Death Eaters, have served you for many years. We have always believed in a world free of muggles and muggle-borns. You recruited us decades ago and promised us a new world order ruled by pureblood Wizards. I feel that these promises are a bit much. You've bit off more than you could chew. You're in over your head, and we have suffered in our service to you. And I'm not the only one here that thinks so. You cannot inspire in us the confidence that you once did. When you tried to kill Harry Potter back in 1981, not only did you fail to kill him but it caused your body to be destroyed. In the graveyard of Little Hangleton you could not kill Harry Potter. He evaded you again and again and then you disappear on us for 12 years where our order fell apart as well as all of our plans. And now here we are answering your call and you have told us to retreat from battle three times. The point I'm trying to make is, I don't see this new world order that you promised us. I don't think you have the ability to grant this new world order to us."
What Rodolphus Lestrange had just done was extremely bold. Everyone watched to see what the Dark Lord would do. Voldemort looked Rodolphus in the face with calm composure.
But, Voldemort was furious that Rodolphus would talk this way to him in such disrespect. Part of him wanted to raise his wand and kill him this instant, but at the same time Rodolphus was a pureblood wizard; something that was few and far between. He could not afford to lose Rodolphus.
"I agree Rodolphus." said Voldemort. "I agree that I have suffered failures. I agree that these failures make me look bad. No one is more frustrated than I that I seem to be unable to kill Harry Potter. I don't know how Harry Potter has survived my killing curse time and time again, but I can assure you, Harry Potter is not immortal."
He walked up to Rodolphus and placed his long thin white fingers on his shoulder.
"You and I have been friends for a very long time Rodolphus." said Voldemort, though 'friend' was a hyperbole; Voldemort had no friends. "I was your mentor. I taught you dark magic that you could not imagine. You believe in a world free of muggle-borns. And a world where muggles serve us. What you have just described that has happened to me, to all of us, is nothing more than a setback. I do not deny that our ambition is elaborate and all elaborate ambitions have setbacks.
"Rodolphus, I need you. I need you to accept these setbacks as normal for elaborate plans. Nothing has changed. Help me Rodolphus! Trust me!"
Rodolphus then suddenly had a look of shame and guilt on his face. He then bowed in respect.
"Whatever you need. I am your loyal servant my Lord."
Rodolphus's wife Bellatrix then stepped forward.
"We still spread darkness and destruction across this world." said Bellatrix. "And several small countries have submitted to your leadership and authority my Lord. Their crude but semi useful armies are at your disposal."
"Very well." said Voldemort. "Continue with our plans. Seek out more politicians and world leaders and put them under the Imperius Curse."
He then looked down at the Omegahedron that was in his hand.
"I also confess that I have gotten sloppy. I've gotten overconfident. This piece of alien technology enhances my magic. But I have not taught myself how to tap its power to my full potential.
"I require some time in seclusion."
He then walked off.
Bellatrix then turned to everyone and took charge.
"Let's all get to work. Recruit more to our cause. Bewitch and confund whoever you have to. Target the politicians and world leaders."
DEO headquarters.
Bella and Edward came into the room. The rest of the group was there.
Amun scanned Bella's body with his scanner and his eyes went wide with astonishment.
"Isabella, your capacitor is maxed out. But apparently the capacity of the capacitor is far beyond anything I would have imagined."
"You absorbed a nuclear explosion with your Shield?" said Benjamin.
"How is this possible?" asked Royal Hale.
"It seems that Bella's powers have grown exponentially." said Edward.
He then turned to his wife.
"Bella love, perhaps you should give a demonstration."
Bella stood back into a wide open space. She closed her eyes took a deep breath and then her hair, hands, and arms burst into flame and her eyes glowed bright yellow light. She demonstrated by shooting a few fireballs and flamethrowers. Then demonstrated her power of flight by lifting off the floor.
"Mama that is incredible." said Renesmee.
"Bella when did you become a Firebender." said Avatar Sierra.
"Wait a minute." said Wally West. "Ability to fly, use fire, and absorb a nuclear explosion? Aren't those the same powers as the metahuman Firestorm?"
"Or the Human Torch." said EJ Cullen
"The who?" asked Julie Black.
"One of the Fantastic Four; a superhero group from my universe. Though I don't think he could absorb a nuclear explosion."
Amun continued to look at the readings on a scanner.
"It seems that another side effect of your powers is that if you use enough energy you can manipulate the environment around you. Your ability of flight I think would be a slight anti-gravity effect. And your ability to shoot fire may merely be controlled projection of the nuclear explosion that you absorbed."
They then turned to Oliver Queen.
"Oliver." said Barry Allen.
"Barry." Oliver responded.
"You got my message?"
"Yeah, sorry for the delay. We had our own issues back in Star City. But fortunately we were able to get here thanks to the Dimensional Extrapolator that Cisco gave us."
"And I am so glad to be free of the mind control of Loki's Staff." said Cisco.
"Good to have you back." said Barry.
"When I was on Lian Yu, I saw some crazy things." said Oliver Queen. "But an evil dark sorcerer being pulled here from an alternate reality, just out of curiosity how many alternate realities are there?"
"There are an infinite number." said Renesmee.
"I'm sorry. I don't think that we've been introduced."
Renesmee then reached out and placed her finger on the side of Oliver Queen's temple. He gasped with the flood of memories going through his mind.
"Wow!" said Oliver. "And I thought all we had were metahumans and aliens."
"Let us return to the matter at hand." said J'onn J'onzz.
He turned to Alice and Archie.
"Do you see anything more."
"More nuclear explosions." said Archie.
"Scattered all over the place." said Alice. "About two or three a day."
"This terrorism is senseless." said Carine Cullen.
"Sounds like my kind of situation." said Oliver Queen. "Me and my team are dealing with senseless terrorism all the time."
"Is any terrorism not senseless?" asked Valerie Cullen rhetorically.
"Most terrorists are fighting for a cause, making a statement." said Esme Cullen speaking human psychology, trying to explain what is going on inside the head of the antagonist. "Voldemort has lost his mind. He's just gone crazy."
"We forced him to retreat three times in a short time." said Severus Snape. "In our universe The Dark Lord never does that. I think at present The Dark Lord may have a very bruised ego. The Dark Lord will become more reckless and prone to paranoia. There will be no logic or reason to anything that he does. He is still obsessed with killing Harry Potter. And perhaps anyone else who has defied him that he could not kill."
"I need to master wandless magic." said Harry. He turned back to Dudley Dursley. "Back to training."
"No." said Alastor Moody. "I will take over. Dudley you assist Arthur. Harry Potter come with me."
Cisco was in conversation with Sierra Beifong about her trip through her multiverse breach to Earth 38.
"So," said Cisco, "the scientists of the university of your…'Water Tribe'...created and technological gateway device to this…'spirit world'...and that it produced the breach?"
"It's what happened." said Avatar Sierra.
Cisco thought for a moment. But it was Curtis Holt aka Mister Terrific who spoke.
"Even though it had been designed, built, and programmed to do a specific thing, its design may have had a superficial technological similarity to the breaching technology." said Curtis Holt. "And it must have reacted to the Multiverse breach accident when you opened all of the breaches Cisco."
"Well then," said Sierra Beifong, "that explains why the breach happened."
He examined the molecular scanning armband that was on Sierra's arm.
"Still hasn't found your universe yet." said Cisco. "Don't worry, we'll get you home."
"Well, even if you found my universe and could send me home now, I think I'd actually stick around for a little while. The crisis that is currently happening is drawing me here to deal with it." said Sierra Beifong.
"This isn't your fight." said Cisco. "You shouldn't have to deal with this."
"It doesn't work that way for me." said Sierra. "I am The Avatar. That is a great responsibility on my world. My job is to maintain 'the balance'. It is my destiny. It is my primary function within the Universe. I cannot deny it even if I wanted to. On my world the Avatar used to be the bridge between the spirit world and the human world. Now things have changed. The spirit portals are open, and the spirit world and the human world are now connected. I am no longer the bridge. But I do still serve a function to maintain the balance. And Lord Voldemort is greatly upsetting the balance, in this world. Who knows, if he achieves ultimate power he may spread to other universes. Including mine. In order to restore the balance I must stop him."
"That is very Noble." said Cisco. "Well, we are happy to have your help."
"We just got a report. Another terrorist attack from Death Eaters in Coast City." said Winn Schott.
It was then that the green jewel on the Green Lantern's ring began to blink.
He looked at.
"Danger." said the Green Lantern.
"Coast City is under attack!"
"Got to go." said The Green Lantern.
And capitalized on it he flew out of the DEO.
"Bella, Supergirl, go with him." said J'onn J'onzz.
"Bella love, are you up for this?" asked Edward.
Bella put on a look of determination and ignited her flaming arms and glowing eyes.
"Bring it on!" said Bella.
Bella and Supergirl flew out of the DEO to follow the Green Lantern. Bella was still getting used to her new abilities, but it seemed that she could fly quite fast. She rocketed across the sky at lightning-fast speed by projecting force of nuclear explosion away from her to create a rocket effect of kinetic force around her.
When they arrived in Coast City parts of the city were on fire. Not a lot. Just a few small parts. There were police on the ground doing battle with Voldemort's forces.
This was just one of many dozens of terrorist attacks spread around the world, meant to force government officials into submission in exchange for security.
Supergirl flew to the fires and blew out the fires with her freeze breath.
The Green Lantern summoned constructs of thousands of gallons of water to douse the fire.
Bella's powers would, if anything, only create more fire, so she focused on the bad guys. She landed on the ground and then ran at vampire speed to knockout many of Voldemort's servants with vampire strength. Several Death Eaters cast spells at her which she dodged out of the way of and then blasted them with nuclear energy from her hands.
Barry Allen and Wally West decided to go with them.
The Flash and Kid Flash ran at super speed to attempt to knockout and tie up many of Voldemort's servants.
One of Voldemort's servants was a white Martian, and the white martians had all of the same Powers as the green Martians, the green martians having most of very similar powers to the kryptonians so, the white Martian was able to move as fast as the speedsters.
It was then that the Green Lantern was intercepted by none other than his rival; Thaal Sinestro.
"Hello Hal Jordan." said Sinestro. "We seem to keep bumping into each other."
"Why are you doing this?" asked Hal Jordan.
"Because all things will be consumed by fear and must be destroyed. It is the destiny of all living things." said Sinestro.
"You're insane."
"I like to think...enlightened."
"You disappoint me Sinestro. You were once a Green Lantern. You told me green the power of will was the strongest in the universe."
"And Parallax disproved that." said Sinestro. "I was proud to defend my home world the green power of will. I saved my people from alien attack countless times. But I knew that peace comes at a cost; freedom. It has been my experience that if people think and choose for themselves then it causes chaos, disorder, anarchy. Therefore the yellow power of fear has taught me one thing, if there is to be peace, then there must be no freedom. You brand me as a terrorist. As a dictator. I like to think of myself as a protector. Those who are evil are those who fight for freedom. Those who fight for Freedom will never have security. Those who fight for Freedom will never have peace. So there for those who fight for freedom...must be destroyed!"
"I defeated Parallax with the green power of will." said Hal Jordan. "If Parallax wielded the same power that you did, then how did I defeat him?"
"You flew too close to the gravitational pull of your sun. It was I who rescued you."
"I exercised an attribute that makes a Green Lantern a true Green Lantern. Courage. When it came time to sacrifice myself in order to destroy Parallax and save my world I was 'not afraid'. And I'll do it again!"
"So be it." said Sinestro. "If you think that you can defeat me, then die trying. Farewell...Green Lantern."
Sinestro conjured multiple constructs. Green Lantern summoned multiple constructs. But Sinestro's constructs appeared to be stronger and more powerful.
Supergirl flew at Sinestro and attempted to punch him but he dodged out of the way at super speed and then punched Supergirl. A spurt of blood came from her point of impact and she was knocked away. He then conjured a Kryptonite bracelet around her wrist and she fell to the ground writhing in pain.
Hal Jordan was barely able to keep up a good enough defense.
Bella flew down and grabbed hold of Supergirl before she hit the ground and then set her on the ground. Bella then flew at Sinestro and blasted him with her nuclear energy. Sinestro conjured a wall and then force the wall back on her. Bella smash through the wall and then punched Sinestro with vampire strength.
Sinestro went flying back but then fired an energy blast at Bella. Bella activated her Shield which then just absorbed the energy.
This continued on with a furious exchange blows and Sinestro quickly figured out that the only way to stop her would-be to rip her body apart with physical force.
Fortunately for Sinestro he was doing better against Bella then he might have been otherwise because Bella was still getting used to how to use her powers. Though she was still a little clumsy with her new abilities.
Hal Jordan being aided by Bella fought back harder.
He conjured a giant green hand and punch Sinestro sending him flying. Both conjured constructs and became increasingly more fierce.
Hal Jordan conjured a giant chain that wrapped around Sinestro's torso and attempted to slam him down on the ground but Sinestro used his own power ring of fear to break the chain and then break free.
Sinestro did the same. But Hal Jordan just reacted the same. Bella managed to get under Sinestro's guard and blast him with her nuclear fire and hit him head-on. He was blasted back and slammed into the side of a building.
Supergirl crawled on her hands and knees while the Kryptonite was killing her. She came to a construction worker at a nearby site.
"Do you have a sledgehammer?" she asked.
The construction worker presented a long-handled 10 pound sledge hammer.
She stretched out her arm that had the Kryptonite bracelet.
"Break this!" she commanded.
The worker slammed his Sledgehammer down on the bracelet and it shattered. Supergirl crawled away from the fragments and her powers quickly returned.
The Flash and Kid Flash kept the white Martian busy. Until the white Martian managed to grab hold of Barry Allen and then hold him down and was about to crush him with super strength. That's when Wally West ran at the white Martian at super speed and hit the white martian with a supersonic punch.
The white Martian was knocked back where then Wally West conjured a bolt of lightning and then threw it at the white Martian the white martian was severely injured and knocked to the ground.
"Thanks Wally."
"Thanks Barry."
Bella, Supergirl, and Hal Jordan were holding their own against Sinestro but in the end he seemed to gain the upper hand.
Supergirl, Bella, and Hal Jordan were flying around him blasting him in multiple directions and Sinestro got a little overwhelmed. But fortunately by a combination of both skill and luck she managed to in case Bella in a one metre thick airtight shell of pure titanium, where he then dodged out of the way of a blast from Hal Jordan and created a construct of liquid Kryptonite that he drenched Supergirl with. Hal Jordan and Sinestro we're just going one-on-one now. Hal Jordan had a great deal of determination but Sinestro was still more powerful wielding the yellow power of fear. He blasted Hal Jordan with a continuous sustained beam while Hal Jordan countered with a continuous sustained beam from his own ring. The two beams met in the middle but Sinestro began to overcome Hal Jordan's.
"When you die, Hal Jordan, your ring will choose another." Sinestro taunted. "Maybe your successor will have better luck against me than you."
Hal Jordan, covered in sweat from his effort and every muscle in his body tensed up, looked Sinestro in the eye never willing to give up!
"Brightest Day!" Hal Jordan quoted out loud, "Blackest Night! No evil shall escape my sight! To all of those who worship evils might,"
The green beam coming from Hal Jordan's power ring got thicker and brighter and began to overpower Sinestro's beam.
"fear my power! GREEN LANTERN'S LIGHT!"
The Green Lantern's beam hit Sinestro and blew him right out of the sky. Hal Jordan flew at him and created a giant semi-transparent green fist that punched Sinestro hard right in the face.
Sinestro hit the ground hard and his constructs that were containing both Supergirl and Bella disappeared.
Hal Jordan walked over to Sinestro to take his yellow ring. He pointed his ring and conjured heavy durable shackles all over Sinestro's limbs.
"Thaal Sinestro, by the authority of the Guardians of Oa and the Green Lantern Corps, you are under arrest." Hal Jordan stated in an official tone of voice.
But before Hal Jordan could confiscate Sinestro's power ring Sinestro was swallowed up by a breach that had opened for only one second.
"What the hell?" said Hal Jordan in irritation. "Where did he go?"
"Was that Cisco's breach?"
Barry Allen and Wally West then zipped over at super speed.
"Something's going on. Our prisoner just breached out of there as well. Let's get back to the DEO."
