I did it, I managed to get this up for the Christmas time. Yes! Unfortunately it's a whole year later than I intended but you know, it got up eventually ha ha.

Okay seriously, I know I have a lot to explain and apologise for so please bear with me.

Right so last year around this time I was feeling slightly burned out and had a little writers block for this story. I decided to give myself some time, write a few other things to refresh my palette sort of thing before getting stuck back in to this. I did that and all was going well until the 15th of March.

Unfortunately 9 days before my 27th birthday my Nan passed away. It was unexpected and sudden and I can honestly say has torn me apart.

My Nan was not just my Nan, she was my best friend, my confidant, my idol and a thousand things more all rolled up into one. Losing her was a pain I have always feared and when it came was so much worse than I ever imagined.

So for the next 9 months I focused on trying to cope with my grief and give support to my mother and younger brother who has special needs. That on top of my own health issues which I have explained before left me really just a shell of a person and it's taken me this long to get to the point I believed I was in a place strong enough to actually begin to write again.

Therefore once December rolled around I told myself to get my act together and actually type some of the many ideas I still have floating around in my brain. The quality of whatever it is I have written, that I'm truly not sure of right now but it at least, I hope and pray, makes sense and continues the story.

To add to all of this on the 23rd of December only 3 days ago my father revealed to us he had previously slept with someone other than my mother. I don't want to go in to too much detail, too late I guess, but I did want to let it be known as it actually prevented this going up on Christmas day like I intended.

Right, so now I have told you all what has happened and gone on with me, what do you say we just jump into this chapter and see where we end up?

I'll see you on the other side!

Dedicated to the love and memory of Margaret Rose Wedd 'I love you and miss you Nanny ;;'x'

Chapter 40

"Pride, Containing Rage & Collision"

The threat of someone's life was not exactly rare to hear when in New York, hell it happened in the hundreds alone every single day just due to cyclist's hatred for taxi drivers and vice versa. This particular threat however was slightly less run of the mill and although caused by annoyance was not something that should be brushed off as mere words. For Lexi her threat to end the life of one Jesse St James was not only loud but also deadly serious.

Rage was an emotion that the young brunette knew she did well, hell she likely did it better than any other emotion on the spectrum if she was honest. The bubbling sensation of such a powerful, raw feeling was not only familiar to the sixteen year old but something a sick part of her almost relished. When in this mood, consumed by such a strong, guttural state Lexi knew she was dangerous, a force to be reckoned with but never more so then when the rage was caused by some wrong doing done to the people she loved, then it was game over.

Chocolate brown orbs were transfixed on the screen of her phone, her grip around the device to the point the screen may actually crack. Just watching the betrayal of her sister's young, fragile heart was enough to ignite the flames of vengeance deep within Lexi and it was starting to seep out through the shaking every part of her suddenly starts to experience.

"That no good, cheating, cocky, son of a bitch. I will rip his eyes clean from his skull and feed them to the god damn birds." Lexi rants, her voice cold and sharp much like the death stare currently emitting from her eyes and into the images on her phone.

As her eldest granddaughter's outburst echoes throughout the hotel room, all Dolly Corcoran can do is raise a somewhat bewildered but also intrigued 'Corcoran' eyebrow. Without moving from her seated position however the bottle blonde holds out her hand to her granddaughter, expecting for Lexi to hand over her phone and let her grandmother see whatever it was that had caused this reaction.

Lexi's brown eyes notice the movement and for a moment she side eyes the older version of her mother not entirely sure just what she was expecting to happen. A small frown knits across her forehead as her anger clouds all rational thought and is only brought out of it by a snap of Dolly's well manicured fingers.

'Oh shit she wants the phone.' Lexi silently realises and jumps to attention practically throwing her phone to the growing impatient older Corcoran.

Dolly was not a tech expert but she knew enough to navigate a phone and quickly her green orbs take in the images which had so rightly brought Lexi to the point of explosion. Unlike her fiery grandchild though, the bottle blonde remains collected and just subtly begins to nod her head. If you looked hard enough you could without a doubt see the cogs turning inside the elder woman's brain at just how was best to handle this situation.

Lexi's lungs constrict air flow from slight fear at just how her grandmother was going to react but the teenager is left slack jawed at the very minimal response from the always together and collected woman she called G-mama. Almost as though waiting for the shoe to drop the brunette just remains still, eyes wide and almost pleading for the oldest Corcoran woman to take some kind of action.

'Is she okay? Why am I not having to duck out of the way of my own phone or having to use my strength to hold G-mama back from going and tearing Jesse limb from limb?' Lexi's mind questions silently as all the bottle blonde woman does is look back down to the phone and narrow her slightly faded green eyes.

"Lexi, you need to take a breath before you pass out. Don't worry I am furious but I don't have either the energy or the time to lose control right now." Dolly informs her baffled grandchild whose wrist she grips lightly before giving a swift tug in order to bring Lexi back down to the floor beside her seat.

Knees hit the floor with a muffled thud and Lexi finds herself looking up at her grandmother with puppy dog eyes, a silent wish for her G-mama to tell her what to do. It was not often Lexi would look for someone else to guide her but the rapidly sinking feeling in her stomach was an indication this was one of the times she should.

'She is so much like me when I was younger, not to mention her mother. That is not a good combination, well not for the rest of the world at least.' Dolly's wise inner thoughts conclude as her attention removes completely from the phone and it's offending images and focuses solely onto Lexi.

Lexi's emotions were so clear at this moment, such a contrast to her normally always present mask and acting abilities. The fact this was something to do with Rachel no doubt being the reason why the sixteen year old was finding it impossible to keep her feelings to do with it under wraps.

The hotel room chair creaks slightly as Dolly shifts her weight more to lean forward and just brushes a few stray hairs from her beautiful granddaughter's now flushed face. Looking directly into those expressive orbs the bottle blonde stares deeply in an attempt to really get through to the enraged teenager and ensure Lexi would actually listen to what she had to say to her.

"Oh Cookie, I understand right now you want to go and rage war on the world. The thing is that is exactly what this poisonous little bitch wants you to do. Don't you see my darling, sending this to you now of all days was done for a purpose and that was to light your fuse and watch you explode?" Dolly delicately points out what to her was the obvious. You didn't get to be the age Dolly was, having been through what she had in her lifetime without knowing how to spot an ulterior motive.

'Of course she is right, why wouldn't she be? God damn having these psychic family members sometimes, really. I mean what happened to just letting your anger take over and smacking a bitch?' Lexi's inner voice mutters, bitter from the fact she was being forced to look at this logically and not just go with her first instincts.

Turning the phone so both can see the screen once again, Dolly looks to the brunette sixteen year old and has to make a mental note of the fact Lexi found reading difficult. With one hand cupping the phone, Dolly rubs along now tense shoulders of her grandchild and leans in closer.

"Lexi, it says on here that you are supposed to show this to Rachel and stop her performing at Nationals. If you don't this whore is threatening to send the video to the rest of your mother's show choir. This is a ransom Cookie." Dolly reveals, the look washing across Lexi's features in response making her heart deflate.

Long, brown locks fall in front of the tall teenagers face as the fact she'd been unable to recognise such a threat destroys the little confidence she had gained when it came to her reading. For a girl who presented such a confidence to the world, inside her own head was such a stark contrast most of the time.

Dolly lets out a soft breath and delicately traps Lexi's chin between her index finger and thumb, tugging slightly in order to get the teen to lift her gaze. Once brown orbs are finally making proper contact with green ones the older Corcoran woman turns deadly serious.

"Young lady, you are not allowed to torture yourself about this. Do you understand me? Your reading has improved greatly since being with your mother. Yes, I make regular update checks don't look so surprised, you know me by now." Dolly strongly instructs the young brunette still knelt beside her and suddenly seeming far smaller than she normally would.

Her grandmother's voice slices through Lexi's inner frustration and along with the staring of emerald eyes the young brunette is left with only one option and that is to truly listen. Dark eyes soften slightly and Lexi leans her head onto the older woman's lap and lets out a large breath, shaky and filled with emotions but at least she wasn't with holding it anymore.

Dolly feels her heart ache at Lexi's response, her actions something she'd expect from her younger sister but is pleased to see the older teenager do for herself all the same. Delicately her well manicured fingers stroke through brown locks and the bottle blonde leans back into the hotel room chair with a release of breath herself.

"I presume the person who sent this is the same girl who has caused 'Tweety' all her previous problems at school?" Dolly questions sensing Lexi was still trying to process the information her grandmother had just revealed to her.

"That's the one but apparently she doesn't listen or get the message. Me and Santana both have already punched her lights out." Lexi announces, the pride in her voice over her actions undeniable.

Lipstick coated lips upturn into a half smirk at her granddaughter's gleefulness over having punched this girl before. Normally the grandmother would chastise Lexi but under these circumstances Dolly would let it go. Licking her lips to stop from chuckling, the bottle blonde strokes her hand through Lexi's hair and lets out a little cough.

'Let's hope Santana and Cookie chipped a few teeth. This girl has a death wish though, clearly because I doubt either my granddaughter or her raven haired 'friend' will restrain from giving this Lara another taste of their fists. If I was just a few years younger I would take a swing at her myself.' Dolly's mental monologue remarks as slowly Lexi slides back into a fully upright kneeling position beside the older grandmother.

Sliding her hands down her thighs, Lexi locks eyes once more with Dolly only now she was less disheartened and just pissed off. Dolly knew she shouldn't condone Lexi's rage but she would be lying if she didn't admit watching the sixteen year old find her strength once more didn't make the eldest Corcoran proud.

"What do we do G-mama?" Lexi asks with a exasperated sigh. She knew in this instance deferring to the more experienced and calculated Corcoran was her only real option. Somehow, some way they needed to keep this video contained.

A slow smirk rises against lipstick covered lips as Dolly's famous and feared eyebrow slowly rises on her forehead.

"We stop this poisonous little whore dead in her tracks." Dolly answers bluntly, her words almost as sharp as the look behind her green orbs. This 'Lara' truly had no idea just who she was messing with.

By now the hotel was swarming, proud and clearly some expectant parents were all congregating with pleasant smiles and polite nods of their heads. Behind their eyes though you could almost see the true thoughts filling their minds. 'My child is going to win this.', 'Your kid doesn't stand a chance.', 'Don't get too cocky, I've seen your kid before and no way they're walking out champions.', it went on and on but always with the same general message. Their child was going to win and in some cases god help them if for some reason they don't.

Crystal blue eyes stare into the reflection of a hand held compact as Helena Rawlins contemplates if her make-up was a little overdone for the current atmosphere. Boring board meetings, late night trysts, even the awkward reunions with her mother were all occasions the privileged brunette knew how to dress for. A nationwide choir show however wasn't exactly something Helena had past experience with.

"'You look gorgeous as always 'Square Bear'." April's soft and sweet voice compliments, cutting into Helena's inner insecurities.

The much taller of the two women, gives a flattered smile to her blonde companion but before she can verbalise a word, April quickly changes tone.

"Now please hand the mirror over so I can check I haven't sweat through my foundation." April instructs firmly, her hand already out flat ready to take the small compact into her possession.

'I should have known that compliment was buttering me up for something.' Helena's inner monologue concludes with a roll of her eyes as she gives in and hands over the small silver object.

Tiny hands can't flip the lid open fast enough as April starts to judge her own appearance. Lips purse, teeth are checked for the dreaded lip stick marks or worse food. Once she is happy her teeth are good to go, quickly the petite blonde starts to fiddle with her blonde locks.

The two 'Hair Bear' members were currently sat in the reception waiting area of the hotel lobby. Grant was dealing with Lucas after his nap, trying to prepare the toddler for what would likely be a long competition. The sudden realisation that perhaps bringing such a small child to something so long wasn't the brightest idea giving the father heart palpitations.

"As far as I'm aware April, this isn't going to be televised. You look beautiful, why are you freaking out?" Helena questions the southern belle beside her innocently.

Over the years of their friendship, Helena had never understood April's inability to see her beauty both inside and out. Continuing to watch her friend closely as April pokes, prods, rubs and scrutinizes every inch of her reflection, Helena just shakes her head.

"Funny Helena, funny. Look, I just want to look presentable is all. This is a big deal and looking at some of the people here anything but friendly and casual." April retorts with her trademark quickness and sass.

Helena somewhat concedes to her friend's explanation but continues to observe her pint sized friend as she feverishly checks her appearance. These two had known one another for so long an been through more up's and down's than a rollercoaster and yet, ever before has the English beauty ever witnessed April quite like this.

'You'd think she is going up on stage to perform. Hell, she used to put less effort into getting ready for dates.' Helena quips to herself before her pink lips upturn into a smirk. She hadn't noticed it before now but April was resembling one of the love struck teenagers they were about to watch perform.

"Oh my god, you have a crush on Grant!" Helena blurts out bluntly, the shock of her revelation pushing what should be an inner thought out between her lips and in to the world.

Before a single breath can be taken, an eyelash can blink or a single tick of the clock can pass April's small hand clamps down furiously over her friend's agape mouth.

"Would you hush your damn mouth Helena!" April snaps with panic, her heart now in her brain seeing as it jumped so high.

Feeling slightly and only very slightly, somewhat in control of the situation April allows herself to breathe. Her piercing blue orbs glance around the lobby, checking to see if anyone had heard Helena's outburst who shouldn't, which is anyone at all.

Helena's now retrained mouth still manages to pull up into a cheesy and unstoppable grin. The bubbling excitement within the brunette was almost too much to contain. Thankfully, the vice like grip from April's deceivingly soft hands had that covered.

"Oh stop smirking would you? Whether or not I have feelings for Grant is completely irrelevant. He has much more important things to be worried about and he is married." April quickly chastises able to feel one of her oldest friend's gloating smile beneath her hand.

A perfectly shaped eyebrow rises up on Helena's forehead in a questioning manner as she looks straight into April's eyes. It was one of the biggest problems and strengths between the 'Hair Bear Bunch', they could read one another like no one else alive.

'God damn, fluffy duck it. This is not going to be fun for me.' The petite blonde informs herself silently before letting out a slow, accepting sigh.

"If I let go of your mouth will you be able to keep it under control?" April asks sarcastically as Helena makes sure not to let the smaller woman break their all revealing eye contact.

As April's small, delicate hand reluctantly pulls away from Helena's face, the southern belles' eyes warn her long time friend not to push her luck. Of course, this does nothing in stopping Helena beaming from ear to ear like an excited child.

Helena takes in, one large and needed gasp of air before pushing her somewhat dishevelled, long brown locks out of her face. Staring directly at April, the taller of the two friends leans closer and squeezes the blonde's hand tightly.

"You didn't deny having a crush on him so I'll take that to mean you do?" Helena's pretty and sophisticated English accent asks, almost making the question seem softer and less personal.

'I could deny it, I could tell her to shove it where the sun doesn't shine. I of course would only be proving her right if I do that though. Why does she have to be so darn good at knowing what I'm feeling and thinking?" April rants inwardly as she tries to weigh up her none options in how to handle this situation.

Sensing that her friend was struggling at this point, Helena squeezes the petite blonde's hand again and gives a reassuring smile. As fun as it was to wind her long time friend up, the brunette could tell for April these feelings were more serious than just a crush.

"Oh 'Bubi bear', what have you gotten yourself into now huh?" Helena asks gently, her heart actually going out to the pint sized firecracker beside her.

Shaking her head from side to side in stubborn refusal to actually admit what both these women knew, April feels her eyes start to moisten. Realising this was a losing battle, April shrugs her small shoulders and gulps down her building emotions.

"I… I've really messed up this time 'Square Bear'." April reveals with a quiver to her tone that sends a pained stab directly to Helena's chest. This was indeed much more than some schoolgirl crush.

The backstage area, much like the rest of the hotel, was truly starting to fill up now. The clock was seemingly ticking faster and faster as curtain call drew closer and closer. A growing hum of voices was starting to build throughout the rather confined area. A thick mist of hairspray, make up and perfumes was starting to build in the air as nervous, confident and in between choirs all begin their process of getting ready to go on stage and perform.

For Shelby, her attention was beginning to be pulled in more directions than a compass. Vocal Adrenaline were going to be one of the first performers. This like anything had its pros and cons but for now Shelby was just concerned with making sure her team were all ready. It was these moments where any resemblance to a mother vanished. 'Coach Corcoran' mode was fully engaged and it would need to be in order for VA to make it through this competition and hopefully prevail the ultimate champions.

"Lewis, you are not making a backstage documentary through Instagram stories okay? Now, put the phone down. Actually…" Shelby forcefully informs one of her male singers with a sharpness to her words which could easily cut. As an idea enters her mind however, the brunette trails off and claps both her hands together to gather her entire choir's attention.

"Listen up VA. From now until after your performance I want all phones handed in to Amanda. The last thing we need now is distractions getting the better of us. Now let's get this done smoothly and quickly so we can begin outfit checks and warm up exercises." The coach's authoritative voice rings out in the small pocket of the backstage area her team had acquired for themselves.

As always, her entire team jump to attention and although most are annoyed and disappointed by this new 'instruction', it was an order who are we kidding? They quickly, all be it reluctantly begin to fish out their devices and hand them over to a slightly overwhelmed blonde assistant.

Amanda has a job to tick off the name of each member as they depart with their most prized possession, going by the looks of anguish and grief across their faces. After a few more resistant members finally part with their devices, Amanda finds only one name is yet to be checked off. Spotting the final outstanding member, Amanda shuffles her way through the cramped teenagers to Rachel.

The young brunette was sat seemingly hypnotised in the make-up chair. Being so much smaller than most teens her age, Rachel was able to sit rather unnoticed and just observe. Swarms of hyped up, anxious and focused teens have the fourteen year old completely entranced. The times Rachel had envisioned this moment, nothing she'd thought up could quite compare to what she was actually witnessing. It was frantic chaos and yet had this eerie sense of everyday about. There was no doubt everyone here was determined to win. Even the fellow competitors who had gone a slight grey from nerves still had that demeanour which more than showed their intentions.

"Rach? Rachel, can I have your phone please, you're the last one left?" Amanda asks softly, her voice cheery realising the diva in training was somewhat overwhelmed right now.

Hearing her name, the small brunette quickly turns to where it had come from. Seeing Vocal Adrenalines beloved assistant, Rachel quickly flashes a toothy smile. Nothing today could wipe it from her lips or take the wind out of her sails.

"This really is so exciting isn't it? All the nervous energy and enthusiasm it's contagious." Rachel beams gleefully, her entire body bouncing slightly in the chair, hands tightly clasped together on her lap clearly an effort to keep herself form overflowing with her joy.

A slow, sweet smile tugs at Amanda's lips as she can't help but find this teenager's bubbling passion endearing. Rachel's love for performing was as obvious right now as a neon sign in the pitch black sky.

As Amanda's soft eyes continue to gaze at the fourteen year old in an expectant manner, slowly Rachel realises what the assistant choir coach had asked of her. Rachel quickly shakes her head and shows the young blonde her belongings.

"I don't have mine with me actually. I believe I misplaced it on the trip here what with all the excitement and nerves. You can check my stuff if you wish but I assure you I am not withholding anything from you." Rachel explains honestly, her doe eyes going a long way in convincing Amanda she was indeed being truthful.

'I know exactly where I left my phone and I have to admit I am truly grateful I made that decision.' Rachel's inner voice starts up within the confines of the teenager's mind as Amanda quickly carries on with her duties.

A familiar, pleasant smell fills the diva in training's nostrils and gathers her full attention. Turning around on the large make-up chair she was sat on, Rachel comes face to face with a smiling Jesse St James.

'Oh dear Barbra, why does he have to always smell some enticing?' Rachel's mind questions meekly. Who was she kidding? She adored the way the fellow fourteen year old smelt and had to stop herself from taking in an over dramatic sniff.

"You look incredible Rach. You may not be lead female but I know you're going to command everyone's full attention once you're on that stage. Well, expect maybe for me." Jesse quips, his head tilting to the side with that charming arrogance only he seemed to possesses so effortlessly.

Rachel can't help but laugh in response, although she does add a shove to Jesse's shoulder as well. Shaking her hair, the highly anxious, excited and ready fourteen year old feels her plump lips spread into a smile.

"I would say thank you and return the compliment but you basically did that yourself. Beside's confidence is hardly something you need boosting." Rachel retorts as her hands wring together and she rocks back on the chair slightly.

"Are you nervous?" Jesse's warm voice asks with concern as he stands confidently with hands in the pockets of his outfit. A tight waist coat and dress pants tucked in to his socks for now was as deep as his costume went. He also had a flat cap and coal stains to complete his look but for now those finishing touches weren't needed.

Laughing a little louder than she had intended, Rachel hangs her head back and tries to regain her composure. Jesse's warm eyes break through the young brunette's defences however and leave Rachel giving a nod of acknowledgement.

"Deeply but honestly I'm more concerned. Lexi hasn't been to tell me to 'break a leg' yet and it's starting to get down to the wire." Rachel explains, the need for her older siblings reassurances perhaps more prevalent in this moment than ever before.

Jesse can feel his chest tighten at the mention of Rachel's older sister. Lexi was still, understandably furious with the male singer so Jesse was hardly seeking out any interaction with her. Despite his own fear and concern of being around the taller Corcoran girl, Jesse knew just how much Lexi's encouragement and assurances meant to his former girlfriend. Being an only child himself, with parents who were hardly active in his life, Jesse found the relationship between the sisters truly endearing.

The taller of the two teenagers, glances down to his wrist watch and examines the time. With a self assured shrug of his shoulders Jesse waves his hand off in dismissal of the concern.

"There's plenty of time Rach and knowing your sister, if it means she has to fight through this sea of humanity to get to you, she will." Jesse assures confidently, his hand reaching out to stroke the diva in training's cheek but stops mid way.

After Dolly allows herself a strong shot of brandy and Lexi has to settle for a quick cold shower to calm down, grandmother and granddaughter head down towards the hotel's built in theatre. The burning images she had seen on her phone were still causing Lexi the want to throw up but somehow the sixteen year old was containing it.

'The slime sucking, two timing, dead man walking. Oh when I am finally allowed to let loose on 'Waffle boy' I'm going to rip him to pieces. Thousands of tiny, jagged pieces.' Lexi's inner voice rejoices knowing for now these thoughts were as close to action as she was going to be able to get.

Dolly's green orbs watch over her eldest grandchild closely and can tell inside, Lexi was like a bubbling cauldron. It didn't take too many guesses for the oldest Corcoran woman to know exactly where that temperament came from.

'I really shouldn't be proud of the fact my grandchild is currently contemplating murder but, here I am.' Dolly informs herself silently before raising a knowing 'Corcoran' eyebrow Lexi's way.

"This is going to destroy Rach when she finds out and no matter what we do, she's going to find out." Lexi points out in answer to Dolly's vocally unasked question of what the teenager was thinking.

The bottle blonde grandmother deflates slightly as Lexi's words ring all too true. Just the thought of how this would affect her younger granddaughter was enough to make Dolly's own thoughts turn murderous but the older Corcoran knew for now she had to behave.

"We may not be able to keep 'Tweety' completely protected from this but we can damn well assure this doesn't ruin her performing. When the show is done we will face the consequences of this video but for now, we need to focus on making sure your sister doesn't see it." A determined Dolly informs her eldest granddaughter as they ride the elevator down from their room.

Lexi's head nods in instant agreement to the older Corcoran's plan. As much as she would reveal in the chance to expose Jesse this instance and possibly throw a few punches in for good luck, the older sister knew this was not about her.

Dolly's green eyes can all but see Lexi's temper simmering, the poor girl might explode but for now the grandmother knew the only way to handle this was to act normal but more importantly calm.

'This Lara wants to play a grown up game, fine. Game on but trust me little girl, no one messes with my grandbaby.' The older Corcoran warns silently, her own temper rising the more the situation sinks in.

"When we get down there, I'm going to find your mom and you find Rachel. I'll explain what has happened but you just focus on keeping 'Tweety' away from any phoned alright?" Dolly instructs the sixteen year old beside her with authority. No way was the blonde grandmother about to allow this venomous bitch take away performing at 'Nationals' from Rachel or Shelby.

Nodding her head in agreement, Lexi takes a breath and reminds herself that for now all that was important was shielding Rachel from this heartbreak at least long enough for her to perform with happiness like she deserves.

Reaching between them, Dolly takes Lexi's tanned hand in her own and squeezes securely. Locking eyes with her eldest grandchild the older Corcoran nods her head softly. No words had to be said between the grandmother and granddaughter in this moment as they each knew what the other was saying with just a look and squeezing of hands. They were each on a mission now and ultimately they knew Rachel's pain was inevitable but they were going to delay it for as long as they could, by any means necessary.

Someone deciding to trust you enough to reveal their deepest secrets was a true privilege that April Rhodes had learnt to never take lightly. Normally, the southern belle would rather have her nails removed one by one with pliers before divulging someone else's private information. Normally however, April wasn't dealing with increasing and quickly overpowering feelings towards her best friend's married, older brother.

"So, have you and Grant actually done anything?" Helena asks for clarification as her mind works double time trying to process the rather jumbled information April had just spilled out to her.

April had kept the more intimate information about just what Grant's wife, Sharon's cheating truly entailed and had stuck mostly to the fact she was pretty darn sure she was falling for Grant. Mainly the petite blonde had begged for the English beauty to offer her some advice.

Shaking her head to the asked question, April purses her lips together with a heavy sigh escaping her lung. Blue eyes flicker up and search Helena's equally bright pair with not so hidden meaning. April could feel her stomach twisting like a pretzel with teenage excitement and embarrassment. For the short blonde these feelings hadn't occurred since her eleventh birthday so to say she felt odd was an understatement.

"No, nothing has happened but I would be lying if I told you I haven't desperately wanted it to. What am I doing 'Square Bear'? Grant is a married man with a young son. I should not be feeing this way about him." April splutters out with a mix of fear and frustration over her own inner most feelings.

It was a rare occasion that Helena Rawlins found herself struggling to speak but here she was, opening and closing her mouth like a suffocating fish. Over the year all three of the 'Hair Bear Bunch' had found themselves in tricky situations but the dark brunette had to admit this was a new one.

Naturally lightly curled brown locks wave from side to side as the English beauty shakes her head at her best friend's harsh words for herself. With a tender hand, Helena reaches over to April and grips her small hand securely. It works in drawing the blonde's attention so that was a good start.

"April you are begging far too hard on yourself. Of course these feelings aren't ideal but you can't help them. Grant is married yes but from what you have told me he is being treated terribly and married in name only." Helena begins tenderly trying to ease April's inner fighting but is quickly silenced by her friend's frantically shaking head in disagreement.

"That shouldn't matter Helena. Whether his marriage is healthy or not I am lusting over a married man. It goes against everything I have ever been taught." April's high voice interrupts with the panic her heart was currently experiencing in rapid beats.

'Oh for –, trust 'Bubi Bear' to mark herself as a harlot when she hasn't even experienced any of the fun of being one.' Helena's mind concludes, almost chuckling at the pureness of her sweet friend.

"You just told me you haven't so much as kissed him 'Bubi Bear', stop acting as though you're entangled in a full blown affair for a moment and breathe before you pass out. For someone so small you have large lungs so use them to your advantage." The much taller friend chastises somewhat playfully before she ponders her next words carefully.

April frowns in annoyance at the fact Helena was so dead on right and reluctantly takes in some deep, calming breaths. This entire situation had rocked the inner bible belt little good girl inside the blonde former bartender. Despite everything April had been through and done in her life, the religious lessons she had been demanded to learn through her youth had always stuck with her.

"April, you fancy Grant. There is nothing wrong with finding someone attractive, physically and emotionally. None of us can help who tickles our fancy okay so first thing first you need to stop beating yourself up about that." Helena insists firmly, her natural English accent and phrases only driving the point home even further.

Realising the shorter woman was actually lam enough to take in what she was saying now, Helena straightens her bent posture in her chair slightly. Still lightly holding April's hand, now resting on the arm of the chair, the brunette gives a tender smile.

"You know that relationships are not my forte 'Bubi Bear' and this situation is far too complicated for me to give you some half arsed advice. I can tell this is genuinely hurting you though so all I can really think of for you to do is to just talk to Grant about it. Now before you bite my head off and say 'he has too much going on', I agree but guess what? Life is a bitch sometimes and timing is not her speciality. This is not healthy for you April, you HAVE to talk to him about what you're feeling." Helena continues hoping desperately she wasn't about to make the situation ten times worse.

As expected April's lips part ready to say exactly what Helena predicted but the English beauty ends up being too fast. With a roll of her blue eyes and half attempt to remove her hand from her friend's grasp April shrugs her shoulders in defeat. Feeling the tug from the smaller woman's hand, Helena narrows her eyes and tightens her own grip keeping the connection stubbornly.

'Damn it, why is it both her and 'Hair Bear' have such a height and strength advantage over me. Curse my small stature.' April mentally huffs, an attempt to somewhat block out the seriousness of this conversation.

"I'm not saying you have to go and declare your undying love or jump him but just, just tell him that well, tell him what you're feeling and how conflicted that is making you feel because of his situation. If nothing else it will ease your mind and then you can both figure out what to do next." Helena concludes, shocking herself that something so sensible had actually come from her lips.

A confident expression matures across the tall brunette's features, pleased with her advice giving. Helena was hardly ever the one either Shelby or April would ask for advice about this kind of thing. How to sneak out of a one night stand and do a respectable walk of shame, that was more Helena's area of expertise.

"Ape-Rill!" A tiny voice yells loudly from across the packed hotel lobby as Lucas spots the pretty woman who made him laugh and gave great cuddles.

For now the conversation between April and Helena was over but both women share a knowing glance that this would not be the final time they spoke on the matter.

Waiting had never been something Rachel enjoyed, who did? Although performing was something the diva in training had done since before she could even speak, Rachel found herself racked with nerves. Her older sister, her biggest supporter, was still nowhere to be found and the time was quickly running out.

'How in the name of 'Barbra' am I supposed to get on that National's stage, representing my mother for the first time without Lexi giving me my 'speech'? I simply cannot do it, I just… I can't.' Rachel informs herself sternly within the confines of her mind as chocolate brown orbs frantically scan across the busy and cramped backstage area for any sign of her older sister.

Jesse quickly notices the nervous energy within the small brunette and flexes his fingers to crack them before motioning Rachel to turn her back to him while in the make-up chair. Rachel of course does as instructed and looks with narrow brown orbs through thee reflection towards Vocal Adrenaline's male lead.

"Trust me." Jesse whispers in to the shell of the tanned fourteen year olds ear as his hands delicately rest on her tense shoulders.

''Gold Stars', I don't believe I can actually breathe right now.' Rachel's mind panics but her body remains still allowing Jesse to do whatever it is he had in mind.

Jesse takes a moment to check around the bustling backstage area for any sign of their Vocal Adrenaline coach, also known as Rachel's mother. Seeing that the coast was somewhat clear, a reinforced confident Jesse begins to rub his fingers into the knots which had formed on the diva in training's neck and shoulders. With all the stress the youngest Corcoran girl had been under these past few weeks it was a wonder her shoulders weren't completely rock solid from tension.

"Ugh, that feels so… good." Rachel mutters as her eyes suddenly close and her small frame melts back into the make-up chair.

Taking the brunette's words as encouragement, Jesse's hands work a little harder into Rachel's shoulders. His thumbs press firmly against the girl's neck and swirl in strong circles. A confident and somewhat trademark smirk appears across the young teenage boy's lips as Rachel's head flops around from the pleasure.

Jesse runs both hands up Rachel's neck before slowly bringing them back down and working more on her shoulders. His blue eyes burn into the reflection of the mirror as Rachel's face flutters from the pleasure she was experiencing. Deciding this was likely his only real chance before they performed to speak privately with the diva in training, Jesse takes a bold step. Bending forward the male lead of Vocal Adrenaline slides both hands down the tops of Rachel's arms and causes her eyes to open and focus in on his through the mirror.

'Oh, 'Gold Stars'. The way he looks at me sometimes it is as though I can't breathe. Is it suddenly hot in here?' Rachel inner voice questions in panic as the connection of teenage eyes only grows deeper.

"You do know that I still love you, don't you Rachel?" Jesse asks in a whisper as he grazes his lips against the shell of his ex girlfriend's ear.

At the same time, Lexi and Dolly shuffle, squeeze and spin their way through the crowd of performers, stage hands and coaches filling the backstage area. The two share a look an nod as Dolly moves to separate from her granddaughter and find Shelby. Before she can however, the eagled eyed grandmother spots, tucked away against the make-up area two fourteen year olds, far too close for comfort.

'Son of a bitch!' Dolly internally rages before nearly breaking her neck to check if Lexi had noticed the same scene she had. 'Of course she has, she's my granddaughter she doesn't miss a thing!' The older woman's inner voice continues as Lexi's fire breathing eyes send death rays across the backstage area directly at one Jesse St James.

'Fuck it, I'm going to just cut his hands off here and now.' Lexi informs herself silently in a surprisingly calm manner as if Jesse's actions had just given her permission and what she was going to do was now somehow acceptable.

Thinking quickly and using her still intact reflexes, Dolly's hand snaps out and latches down around the sixteen year olds wrist with great strength. The contact prevents Lexi's tall and now pissed off frame from lunging through the crowd and without a doubt lynching Jesse right there. With a strong tug, Dolly pulls Lexi up against her side.

'She is physically shaking she's that pissed off.' The beautiful blonde mentally comments as her fireball grandchild seethes beside her.

"I know you want to rip his skin off of his bones right now but that can wait. Look how happy she is Lexi? Ignore the fact he is touching her and being about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face and just focus on 'Tweety'." Dolly implores Lexi, her tone desperate but laced with rage towards Jesse at the same time.

Considering the older Corcoran woman had only recently been through heart surgery her strength was still ungodly. Perhaps it was more of the mental grip that Dolly possessed over her granddaughter which kept Lexi in line but either way it worked.

"Fine, fine but once this comes out you've got to give me at least one clean shot to the balls… with a baseball bat?" The sixteen year old attempts barging the situation knowing her blood lust for Jesse wasn't about to settle down anytime soon.

Dolly's older, yet still stunning face, completely dead pans Lexi in response. Lip stick covered lips purse together as her famous 'Corcoran' eyebrow slowly rises up into place. This was another instance where the blonde grandmother didn't need to speak a word for Lexi to comprehend the message loud and clear.

"I'm going to take that as a 'You'll think about it'?" Lexi squeaks out her reply knowing all too well she was pushing her luck but for this occasion it was worth pushing.

'Oh she is my grandchild alright. Dear god give me the strength to get through this competition without committing murder or witnessing one of my family committing it.' Dolly mentally pleads before shoving the sixteen year old in her grip towards Rachel at the make-up station.

"Just worry for now about getting him away from 'Tweety' and keeping her away from any chance of seeing that video. I will find your mother and explain what is going on." Dolly orders sternly, her green orbs telling Lexi this was not to be argued with or disobeyed.

Lexi's tall frame rocks to the side she is shoved and just nods in instant agreement with Dolly's instructions before she once more feels her grandmother's hand around her wrist. This time though the touch is more gentle and a slight nudge back to gather the brunette's attention.

"We'll discuss just what you can get away with doing to Jesse after we get through this competition." Dolly adds as if it was a matter of fact. She then lets Lexi go once again and even accompanies the motion with a brush of her hands to let the teen know to hurry up.

'Well knowing G-mama is giving me the okay to at some point in the future do 'something; to that lying sleaze ball should be enough to get me through this without throwing fists. Yet. God I love my G-mama.' Lexi silently gloats to herself as she manoeuvres through the crowded area towards her baby sister and a young man who was living on borrowed time and had no idea.

Green orbs linger in her eldest grandchild for a few extra seconds, just to make sure Lexi didn't go off script and tackle Jesse through the make-up mirror. Once she is as sure as she is going to get that it is safe to leave, the bottle blonde grandmother turns all of her attention to searching for her daughter.

It isn't a hard as Dolly feared it may be as thankfully Shelby was now in full 'Coach' Corcoran ,ode which meant her presence was hard to miss. The dark brunette was stood in front of three of the male members of Vocal Adrenaline inspecting their outfits. Her left hand was holding a pencil and pointing to area of the costume she was referencing. With each movement of the sharp pencil being thrust their way, every boy squirms slightly and holds their breath.

"Lewis go and find Amanda and ask her to put a pin in this collar to keep it in place. Now I won't lie to you and say you won't likely get stabbed with it while performing but, suck it up this is nationals." Shelby informs her student in a no nonsense tone before dismissing the other two with a quick flick of her pencil.

'Jeez, 'Tweety' was not kidding when she told me her mother takes on my persona when in 'Coach' mode. I don't know if I should be proud of offended. Hell, I'll take pride, she's got to be good to get them to National's once again.' Dolly's inner voice comments before the older of the two mothers coughs to make her presence known. After all Dolly Corcoran was always good at making her own presence known.

The sound of the distinctive and somewhat fear inducing cough causes Shelby to spin around in one movement and nearly knock straight into her mother. Room was hardly something that was going spare currently.

"Mom, hey. Have you seen Rach? I know she was worried you and Lex wouldn't get back in time to wish her well. Speaking of that other child of mine, where is Lexi?" Shelby questions, her tempo speed up due to the adrenaline filled situation and just overall excitement.

Dolly quickly shakes her head and accosts her daughter by gripping Shelby's bicep and tugging her off to the side. The movement takes the brunette completely off guard but being Dolly's daughter she knew better than to fight or argue.

"Shelby darling, I understand this is a very important time but I have to speak with you. Don't worry about Lexi, she is with Rachel now. We have a problem though and you need to listen to me, now." Dolly insists wasting no time in getting straight to the core of the situation.

'Oh just what in the world has happened now? What could possibly have happened to get my mother freaking out so much?' Shelby mentally ponders as her head just instinctively nods in agreement for her mother to continue whatever it was she needed to say.

Resting her hand more softly over Shelby's bicep and starring deeply into her mirroring green orbs, the oldest of the Corcoran women takes a breath and prepares to drop this bombshell. Knowing most of the times a picture is worth a thousand words, Dolly reaches into her purse and fishes out Lexi's phone. Presenting it to Shelby, because what was needed to be seen was on it but also the grandmother had no clue how to actually get the device to work, Dolly nods to indicate the phone would be the answer.

'This has to do with Lexi and her phone? What the hell has she possibly done?' Shelby panics internally as she takes her child's phone and unlocks it. Both of Shelby's children had to give up all passwords and pass codes to all their devices before their mother would even think about allowing them to have them.

With her heartbeat now ringing in her ears from concern, Shelby's eyes watch as Lexi's phone unlocks and suddenly a video flashes in to view. The images on the screen cause the normally collected brunette's mouth to drop open. Almost unable to fully comprehend what she is seeing Shelby glances towards her mother for some kind of explanation.

"The poisonous little bitch who has hurt 'Tweety' in the past sent this to Lexi with clear instructions. Hell, it's a god damn ransom Shelby. She wants Rachel not to perform at Nationals or this disgusting piece of pornography will be spread around Vocal Adrenaline and the school faster than this Lara seems to spread herself around." Dolly reveals, her voice sharp and unforgiving as Lara comes in to the conversation.

Shelby's shock manages to prevent the mother of two from saying a word and instead her eyes turn back to the screen where she reads word for word just what Lara had sent Lexi. With each word Shelby's heart sinks that much deeper into the pit of her stomach. Like her mother and eldest daughter she understood exactly what viewing this video was going to do to Rachel.

'I should have guessed that vindictive little brat would do something to try and ruin this for Rachel but even I didn't think she'd stoop this low. Lesson well and truly learned Shelby, never underestimate just how low jealously will make people sink.' Shelby's mothering voice comments silently as dread and heartache for her baby washes over the brunette like a tidal wave. FUCK.

Dolly reaches out with a delicate hand and ghosts over Shelby's which is holding the phone. Shelby feels her mother's strength pass through her from the contact and look up into her mother's eyes almost begging for some form of guidance. Always being one step ahead of the curve however the eldest Corcoran just delicately squeezes her child's hand and gives a nod of her head. Each of them knew and cold already sympathise for the looming heartbreak Rachel was going to experience because of this but they would be damned if she didn't at least get to experience performing first.

"This is NOT going to ruin Rachel's day okay? I have taken away the team's phones already thankfully and they won't be getting them back now for, well if I had my way ever again." Shelby's voice growls with utter hatred for the fourteen year olds responsible for all this pain now waiting to crush her youngest daughter's heart.

'That's my girl. I may not have done everything perfectly but I made my kids and grandkids strong if nothing else.' Dolly proudly gloats within the confines of her more experienced mind as she nods in complete agreement to Shelby's plan.

Dolly could sense that her daughter's mind was shifting to thoughts of just what this video being exposed was going to do to Rachel and quickly interrupts. Delicately the older woman's hand reaches out and takes a gentle grip of Shelby's chin, causing the choir coach to lift her gaze back up into Dolly's all telling eyes.

"We will deal with the aftermath when it comes my darling but right now, well right now you and your team have a damn competition to win. I didn't survive heart surgery and come all this way for second place now did I?" Dolly quips with a smirk on her plump lips.

Although at first wanting to shut her mother down, quickly Shelby notices and appreciates Dolly's intentions behind her words and gives a half smirk in response. No matter what was going to happen, right now Shelby had a job to do both as a choir coach and more importantly as a mother.

Standing a little straighter and returning her eldest daughter's phone to her mother's possession, the stunning brunette nods her head and intakes a deep breath. With a look of pure pride spreading across her features, Dolly wraps her arm securely around Shelby's waist and pulls her in closely against her side. Even in her let thirties, just having her mother hold her close gives Shelby the encouragement she needs as they both make their way across the crowded room in search of Lexi and Rachel.

Thankfully for Jesse, the promise from Dolly is enough to keep the simmering brunette contained as she finally catches her younger siblings eye.

"Lex! I didn't know if you were going to make it down here in time." Rachel squeals with delight as her conversation with Jesse is instantly left without thought.

The small brunette jumps to her feet in one movement and quickly finds Lexi's outstretched hand through the wall of people. With a tug the fourteen year old manages to free her older sister from the shadows and raps both arms tightly around her neck in a warm embrace.

"As if I wouldn't Rach, as if. You know me though, I'm never on time to anything but I always make it in the end." Lexi quips playfully as she wraps her long limbs around her sister.

With her younger sibling's chin on her shoulder, Lexi takes the moment to stare daggers straight into one suddenly sheepish looking Jesse St James. She may not be able to physically touch him, yet but Lexi wasn't about to let this chance of burning through him with laser beams eyes go.

'How I wish I had the ability to make him spontaneously combust. Breathe Lexi, breathe your time will come. Remember what G-mama said though, this isn't about you or even Jesse, this is about Rachel.' Lexi's inner voice reminds the furious sixteen year old as she refocuses her attention back onto her sister still wrapped securely in her arms.

Realising she was holding on for a little too long, Lexi finally releases Rachel and just smiles proudly at the younger brunette once the fourteen year old is back on her feet properly. This was going to be a hard enough moment not to become emotional in without all this other stuff going on so the older teen has to physically bite the inside of her mouth.

"You look incredible. Are you ready to go out there and win this thing?" Lexi asks tenderly as she sees the pure glee just bubbling around inside the diva in training.

Rachel lets out a half laugh and half puff of air, accompanied with her hand brushing the comment off. Her tanned cheeks however, as always give her away by turning red instantly. The fourteen year old suddenly turns bashful, eyes reverting to the floor as she scuffs her shoes and brings both shoulders up underneath her ears.

"I don't know about that Lex, this is only the first round of the finals anyway. We have to perform, they wait for everyone else to perform and then see if we have made it into the final ten and perform all over again." Rachel explains as nonchalantly as she can physically manage, which it turns out isn't very nonchalantly at all but at least she tried.

"Oh don't give me that crap Rach, I know you better than that. You have always known how talented you are and your chances of winning any particular show and I've seen you guys all perform and rehearse. Now I know these other teams are good too and you can't count your chickens before they hatch but we both know you are counting on nothing lower than second and even that chaps your ass." Lexi bluntly corrects not about to buy the bashful act for a single second.

A frown instantly knits across Rachel's brow at her sister's remarks, even though they aren't exactly wrong. With duelling eyes the two teens stare one another down but the younger of the two is quicker to break. With a small chuckle Rachel rolls her eyes and just somewhat reluctantly nods in agreement.

"Okay, fine you win Lex. I am determined, hopeful and yet increasingly nervous and about a thousand other emotions all at once." Rachel relents as her eyes suddenly turn doe like and Lexi is left feeling sucker punched by them.

Lexi's eyes flicker up from Rachel's for a reprieve and spot the back end of Jesse as he slinks away back into the crowd. The protective nature in the taller sister was hard to fight so her lips form into a snarl as she makes sure he is truly gone.

'You better run Jesse because when I am finally allowed to wrap my hands around that pathetic little, scrawny neck I am going to-' Lexi vengefully warns the cheating teenager inwardly before Rachel again grabs her attention.

"Lexi! Are you even listening to me right now? I am pouring my heart out, expressing my apprehension and you're just… giving evil looks to my competitions backs?" Rachel asks sharply clearly frustrated with her sister's attention fluttering elsewhere at this crucial time.

Being the smaller of the two teenagers meant Rachel had to crane her neck up slightly to fully give her older sibling the disapproving glare she was going for but she makes it work. Lexi inwardly groans but remains outwardly calm and just gives a tender smile to try and smooth things over. Lexi's hands reach out and take both of Rachel's softening the harsh scowl coming from the fourteen year old somewhat. Staring deeply into the younger brown orbs of the diva in training, Lexi gives Rachel her full attention.

"I'm sorry okay? I promise you Rachel, all I am worried about right now is you okay? As far as you being worried and nervous I get it but you don't have to be." Lexi coolly replies, her larger hands squeezing her sister's sweetly as a genuine smile graces her plump lips.

'Oh darn it, how could I have forgotten Lexi is the very person who taught me how to do the 'Doe' eyes. Of course she's just completely turned them around on me effortlessly. Dear 'Barbra' when will I learn?' Rachel's inner voice points out the obvious as the fourteen year old continues to soften towards her big sister.

Lexi guides Rachel back into the make-up chair and crouches down in front of her while still holding both hands. Seeing her baby sister in this moment, genuinely excited and yet nervous makes the older of the two Corcoran girls back to many years before. Herself and Rachel had been in similar positions to this before, backstage before competitions but something about this one was extra special and they both knew it.

"I've never performed in front of audiences like you have, well apart from stripping but we won't go into that. What I'm trying to say is, this audience, this competition is just the same as all the others-" Lexi begins but pre-emptively anticipates the younger brunette's objection and quickly places one of her index fingers to Rachel's plump lips.

'So predictable Rach, so predictable.' Lexi inwardly gloats before just smirking as her little sister reluctantly again falls silent and is forced to listen.

"I know it's different because G-mama, uncle Grant, Helena, Auntie 'Bubi' and even little Lucas are out their this time. I know it's more important because of that and because mom is here, watching you and is your coach. I understand all that but when you really look at it for what it is, it's no different than any other competition you've done. This is about going out there, giving everything you have, trying with all your heart to win and showing why you're always so confident in your abilities. No matter who is or isn't in that audience that never changes Rachel, ever." Lexi adds as she returns Rachel's lips to freedom happy the fourteen year old will now remain silent until the older brunette is finished.

Lexi tenderly tucks a strand of hair from Rachel's face and just smiles brightly. For so long the older teenager took on the role as 'mother' for her younger sister and even now that they had Shelby, a real mother, it was moments like this when Lexi would be hit with that maternal pang. Now though Lexi knew the feeling, emotion, sensation or whatever you wanted to call it came from being a big sister. It was Lexi's job to be her older sister now and that took a huge amount of tension from the taller brunette's shoulders and made these situations a little easier to navigate.

"So, I'm going to say to you what I always say and I'm going to say it not because it's routine or superstition but because it's the truth. You're my star Rachel and I call you that for a reason. What's that reason?" Lexi questions in a hushed whisper that was shared between the two sister's only.

Normally for Rachel being forced to repeat her mantra was something she would do with an inner eye roll or huff of frustration as it felt somewhat stupid. Right now however the fourteen year old feels both of her eyes suddenly fill up with stinging tears. As if sensing what was about to happen Lexi shakes her head and winks to her younger sibling.

"Hey no, no crying. You have way too much make-up on to start crying and honestly I don't think I'll stop if I start so come on. You've got this 'Star'." Lexi interrupts playfully as Rachel chuckles in response before taking in a large breath to prepare herself.

'I knew this would be coming, I even wanted it to come and yet now it is here I feel as though my heart is currently residing in a vice. Dear 'Barbra' why? Perhaps because this competition although like every other in the fundamental reasons is also so much more personal due to our family's being here?' Rachel's inner voice wonders rapidly as it often did in these kind of emotion filled situations.

"Because I was born to shine, to shine brighter than any stars and any moon and one day rival the sun with my beams when my dreams come true." Rachel repeats the many times repeated 'mantra' almost in one breath knowing if she took too long she would undoubtedly cry.

As the two sister's stare into one another's chocolate brown orbs, each brunette struggles to stop tears from spilling out. In an attempt to stop just that the older of the two sister's lightly uses her fist to graze off of Rachel's chin. Holding the small girl in close she kisses the top of her head and looks up to the ceiling still trying to contain her emotions.

'Did she just mock punch me in the jaw like an older brother in a TV movie from the 1980's? 'Gold Star' she must be desperate not to start crying.' Rachel's mind points out as she struggles somewhat to get out of her sister's vice like grip.

"Lexi, as much as I appreciate the love and the support you are messing up my hair and cutting off my air supply." Rachel croaks out meekly while trying to reach up underneath Lexi's long arm which is tucked up under her chin and around her neck.

Steeping Back instantly and releasing Rachel from her grip, the taller brunette chuckles with slight embarrassment and just wipes at her eyes discreetly encase any tears had made the great escape without her knowing.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to .. well strangle you. It's just I'm… I'm really proud of you Rachel and I can't wait to see you perform on that stage where you belong to be." Lexi reveals, quickly turning away from the fourteen year old in the make-up chair before they are each hit with even more tears to combat.

By now the theatre was slowly starting to allow the audience to trickle in as show time was growing ever closer. Standing in the cue to go and reach their seats, April has Lucas on her hip as he looks Helena up and down in amazement. Grant was stood behind the three of them rather obliviously just watching as they slowly gain closer and closer to the front of the line.

For most of her life Helena Rawlins had not been around children, that wasn't to say she didn't like them or even perhaps one day even want them but experience wise she had next to none. The cute brunette boy now happily in one of her closest friend's arms however had truly stolen her attention, just as he planned.

"'Bubi Bear', why is he starring at me like that?" Helena questions April with genuine intrigue wondering if this was normal behaviour for a small person or not.

April has to mentally stop herself from rolling her blue eyes at the English beauty's question. Instead she lifts Lucas a little more in her arms and just grins as his eyes don't leave Helena for a moment.

"He just likes you 'Square Bear' calm down. He is a child not a ticking bomb, although he isn't fully potty trained yet so maybe in a sense he is." April explains before diverging somewhat in to another train of thought.

As if on cue Lucas giggles, his little chubby hand reaching out for the taller woman in fascination. He was more than contented in April's arms but he wanted to see just what this other woman was all about. Her hair especially seemed to mesmerize the toddler.

'Seeing 'Bubi Bear' like this is new but I have to say it suits her. Who would have ever thought it?' Helena mentally comments as she gives Lucas' tiny hand a gentle shake making him giggle a little louder this time.

Watching with amazement and admiration as April strokes Lucas' cheek an bounces the small boy in her arms, Helena feels something tug at her heart. Family was a sore subject for the southern belle of the group and always had been but the attachment she had now formed with both Grant and his son was undeniable. Part of Helena couldn't help but feel concerned though, after all Grant was still married although apparently to scum but still.

"You always have been so much more natural with children than me April." Helena announces as Lucas pats his hands u and down against the blonde woman's breasts as his eyes, wide with wonder, look around. Helena had given him the attention he craved, now on to the next thing or person who catches his eye.

April wasn't stupid and knew her friends words had much deeper meaning. A warm smile crosses her lips all the same however. Even if Grant and Lucas weren't her actual family, it felt damn good to feel part of one for once and know she was actually good at something like motherhood.

"I don't know about that Helena, Lucas here is just special." April deflects as she kisses Lucas' nose and earns a shocked gasp from the toddler.

Studying the pretty blonde lady who he had come to know as 'Ape-Rill', the cheeky young boy squeals with delight before attempting to copy her action and lace a kiss back on to her nose. Of course being so young it ends up being more of a slobber covered mess but at least he tried.

"Hey, are you already trying to put the moves on the prettiest woman in the room? That's my boy." Grant suddenly chuckles from behind the two women, his head appearing between them both with a large grin across his face.

The comment doesn't go missed by either member of 'The Hair Bear Bunch' and the two friends quickly lock knowing blue eyes with one another. April is sure her heart had fully stopped from the compliment by the handsome older brother of one of her best friends. Her stomach knots tightly and a flutter is felt in her chest as her heart starts back up once more.

'Oh dear lord, this is a very mutual feeling between these two.' Helena silently realises, her concern for April only tripling by the realisation.

As if only just hearing his own words Grant's face starts to flush red. For a man who towers above almost any crowd and can intimidate groups with a simple glance, it certainly was a look which didn't match his image. Then again Grant in general didn't match what you may assume from his outer appearance.

The tension rises between Grant and April as neither is sure quite how to react, their eyes interlock and a rush of emotions hits them both inside. Thankfully Helena is quick on her feet and turns to Grant and ushers him to go ahead of the two women. The tall brunette isn't going to be argued with and Grant quickly finds himself doing as he is told.

"Why don't you take Lucas here and go and get seated while me and April quickly use the ladies room a final time before everything starts. Knowing our luck if we don't we will need to get up right as Rachel performs. Come on April." Helena instructs, her thin hands making short work of transferring Lucas over to his father and then gripping her smaller companion by the hand and dragging her out of the crowd towards the bathroom.

Left holding his just as bewildered son in his arms, Grant just shrugs his shoulders and laughs when Lucas does the same thing.

"I would say one day I'll teach you all about women but honestly son, I'm still as confused by them as I was at your age." Grant playfully comments to his young boy who decides to place a kiss on his father's nose like he just had April.

"Wait, you said Lexi has seen this and is currently down here somewhere? You let Lexi into a confined space with Jesse after she saw this, are you completely insane?!" Shelby blurts out with panic as herself and Dolly attempt to navigate across the backstage are in search of the two teenagers.

"Yes I did bit don't worry I made sure 'Cookie' keeps her anger in check. For now at least." Dolly assures although even at the end she has to admit this fix was only temporary.

Starring the older version of herself down with an un amused glare, Shelby is about to snap back, much against her better judgement, when finally the girls come in to view. Shaking her worries from her mind the mother of two ups the pace and drags Dolly along with her by the arm.

'Well, Rach seems to be happy and excited and I can't see any sign of blood on Lexi's fists. That's good news.' Shelby's over worried mind comments as green eyes examine her girls carefully before making her presence known.

The smaller of the two sisters was now bouncing on her toes with pent up excitement, her smile fit to burst it was so large. Spotting both her mother and grandmother instantly has Rachel leaping forward once more. Small arms wrap around Dolly's neck as the somewhat hyper fourteen year old greets her.

"G-mama, I'm so unbelievably happy I was able to see you before I perform." Rachel admits almost giddy as her grandmother gives her a tight squeeze.

At the same time Shelby's concerned green orbs seek out her eldest daughter and the two share a look which lets Lexi know her mother now knew what was happening. Sensing her mother was likely fearing what the sixteen year old ad done to Jesse, Lexi instinctively and regrettably innocently holds both hands up for inspection.

'The fact she is for once guilt free is ripping her apart right now. Oh Jesse St James you have no idea the bullet you have dodged, for now.' Shelby's mother voice comments as she gives an understanding and thankful nod to her eldest.

"Well I had to come back here and tell you just how incredibly proud of you I am. Your mother too." Dolly answers her youngest granddaughter as her older hands gently frame Rachel's emotional face.

Dolly's comments catch Shelby's attention and a warmth spreads inside her heart realising her mother had very much intended for her to hear it. A strong arm wraps around the choir coach's waist as Lexi, slightly unexpectedly slides beside her and her head rests against the older brunette's shoulder. Looking at her sixteen year old Shelby returns the embrace and laces a kiss to Lexi's temple.

"You my 'Tweety' are going to go out there with the rest of your team and your mother's guidance and you're going to blow everyone else away. More importantly though darling, you're going to enjoy and savour every last second because win, lose or draw when you are up on that stage you are making your sister, mother, uncle, cousin, adopted aunts and myself prouder than you will ever comprehend." Dolly continues softly as she notices Rachel's plump lower lip begin to quiver.

Quickly Dolly shakes her head and places a kiss to her granddaughter's forehead before tugging the smaller girl in close. Looking at both an emotional and concerned Shelby and Lexi the eldest of the Corcoran girls just gives a reassuring nod of her head.

"Now, now you don't need to cry 'Tweety'. Just remember that we are your family, we are you for you no matter what and most of all we love you." Dolly assures softly, her slightly husked voiced full of emotion as her eyes watch both Shelby and Lexi fight back their own tears.

Delicately Shelby reaches out with her free hand and strokes Rachel's back as the fourteen year old holds on tightly to her grandmother. Her own eyes lock in with her mother and a thankful but apprehensive look washes across her from knowing all of this happiness was going to be shattered and likely ruin what should be such a happy and glorious moment for her baby forever.

'Jesse is going to rule the day he was ever conceived let alone born. How dare he do this to my baby? All I can do now is try and make this as special as I can for Rachel and hope when the shit hits the fan she'll at least have some good memories to cling to from this trip.' Shelby mentally informs the worrying mother as her cheek rests against Lexi's head and she pulls the taller teen just a tad closer to her side.

"G-mama is right Rach. We love you and we're always going to be here. You guys don't have long so you probably all want to get together and do a team speech or whatever. Me and G-mama should go and get our seats. We'll be watching and cheering though. Just enjoy it Rach and remember you deserve it." Lexi interrupts sensing everyone was becoming lost in their thoughts.

Lexi's suggestion kicks everyone in to gear and while Dolly gives Rachel a few extra kisses and a final big hug, Shelby turns to her eldest and presses her hand just tenderly against the brunette's cheek. Looking into those anger and worry filled orbs the mother just gives a weak but tender smile.

"This will be okay Lexi, I promise you. We are going to get her through whatever happens next but first we're going to make sure she gets her moment to shine. I love you baby girl." Shelby whispers as Lexi frantically blinks to avoid a waterfall of tears spilling from her eyes. Instead the sixteen year old gulps, takes a deep breath, straightens her posture and nods in agreement.

"I love you too mom." Lexi answers softly before snapping back into her happy and okay persona. It was a trait with Lexi that Shelby knew would likely never fully disappear. How could an instinct you have relief on for most of your life just suddenly leave you? It couldn't but the mother would always pray and work towards her baby having to rely on it less and less.

With Dolly and Lexi now heading out to their seats, Shelby wraps her arm around Rachel's shoulders and pulls the ball of energy against her side. A warm and pride filled smile graces the older brunette's plump lips as she just watches her baby beam with happiness and excitement beside her.

Looking up at her mother, Rachel's smile grows even wider and both of her arms wrap tightly around the choir coach's waist. Pressed up tightly against Shelby's ample breasts, Rachel closes her eyes for a moment and just fully soaks the sensation in.

'This is it, it's really happening. I'm about to perform on a New York stage, at regional's and more importantly in front of my family and for my mother. This could not get any better.' Rachel's inner voice gushes with joy before she opens her eyes once more and stares directly into Shelby's green counterparts.

"You know, as desperately as I do want for us to win and as whole heartedly as I believe we can and will. I have to admit that if we were to lose, I'd be sad yes but I'd be okay because for the first time in my life I realise even if I don't win I'm still loved and that won't change no matter my win loss record. It's a stranger sensation but it honestly makes all this all that more exciting." Rachel blurts out with a flurry of words which are hard to follow but thankfully Shelby was becoming fluid in 'ranting' Rachel.

Shelby's heart both swells with immeasurable pride at her child's words but also collapses in on its self at the dark cloud now hanging over this entire competition. Knowing all too well there was nothing the protective 'Mama Bear', in Shelby could do to avoid the devastating pain which was looming overhead, the older brunette just smiles proudly instead.

"Rachel, I am so incredibly proud of you and getting to watch your perform tonight will truly be one of the biggest honour of my life. Win or lose I'm getting to see my talented, beautiful, smart daughter make her New York debut, nothing gets better than that." Shelby answers softly, the 'Coach' in her for now tucked away waiting for the ten minute call.

With a final tight squeeze and burying of her head against her mother, the fourteen year old brunette smiles and takes in a calming breath. This was everything Rachel had ever dreamed or worked for and this was just the first step but it was so extra special after everything herself and her family had been through recently.

"I love you mama, so much." Rachel beams as her mother wraps both arms around her and places a kiss to the top of her head.

"And I love you baby, more than you'll ever know." Shelby replies softly before she looks u and notices Jesse watching the mother and daughter duo from across the backstage area.

"Uh coach, sorry to break this up but the stage manager said we're up in ten." Jesse confidently states, one hand in his pocket with a smug grin across his lips. He had always been 'Coach' Corcoran's favourite so he had become very comfortable around her. The relationship with Rachel only really adding to that feeling, even with everything that had recently happened his cockiness at least outwardly hadn't diminished.

Rachel pulls back from her mother's comforting embrace slightly and looks towards Jesse with a renewed fluttering of butterflies in her stomach. The brunette's plump lips spread wide into a smile as she excitedly bounces up and down beside her mother who was now solely focused on Vocal Adrenaline's male lead.

'Hmm, perhaps mom has something she needs to talk over with Jesse before we perform and that is why she isn't taking her eyes off of him?' Rachel's rather innocent mind wonders as she awaits the older woman's reaction to Jesse's interruption.

Green eyes faintly twitch as Shelby's vision concentrates on Jesse solely. The mother of two can feel her pulse picking up pace as she watches every slight movement the teenage boy makes. Knowing she had to at least calm down for now, the brunette teacher inhales deeply and takes a page out of Lexi's book and jumps into a happy persona.

"Thank you Jesse. Rachel, why don't you go and gather everyone so we can have a final team talk before we go on?" Shelby instructs her daughter, the moment her eyes move to the diva in training her expression softens completely.

Rachel lets out a breath of relief seeing her mother seemingly return back to the land of the living and instantly nods her head in agreement to her instructions. The small brunette spins on her heel ready to rush off and motions for Jesse to join her but is stopped by her mother quickly reaching out and grabbing Jesse's shoulder.

"Not you Jesse. I have something we need to discuss first. Don't worry Rach we'll catch up this won't take a second." Shelby expertly assures as her left hand discreetly begins to add pressure in its grip on Jesse's shoulder and in turn smiles even wider herself.

Rachel quickly nods in agreement not thinking anything of it and just overly too excited to actually get on the stage and perform. With her baby now out of sight and range of hearing Shelby's entire expression flashes into one of bottled up rage. Turning Jesse around to face her the older brunette leans in closer and causes the fourteen year old to freeze like a statue still in her grasp.

'Oh you're fucked now Jesse.' Shelby's 'Mama Bear' voice silently informs the now completely confused and on edge teenager.

Stood in front of the bathroom mirror, bent slightly trying to see if any of her red lipstick had transferred to her perfect early whites Helena tuts and rolls her eyes at April's dramatics beside her.

"You didn't have to drag me away like that 'Square Bear', he didn't propose he just, he complimented me. I don't even think he knew what he said until it was too late." April rants, her displeasure with her taller friend being shown by the way her voice was rising in octaves every few words.

Turning from her reflection to the shorter woman, Helena gives April a sympathetic sigh but stands her ground on what she did.

"That's exactly the reason I had to pull you away 'Bubi Bear'. Whatever it is you are feeling is clearly reciprocated and right now I just don't think it is a smart move, for either of you." The English beauty attempts to tactfully explain as she laces her lipstick back into her over the shoulder handbag.

"What in the world are you talking about Helena?!" April snaps back clearly unimpressed by the tactful approach. The petite blonde's high heel stomping down into the marble flooring to show just how unimpressed she truly was.

At this moment one of the restroom door opens and an older woman, likely in her sixties with a look like she was constantly sniffing a rancid smell walks out. With disapproving eyes she looks both Helena and April up and down as she makes her way into one of the stalls.

'When will I learn, subtlety and April just don't mix.' Helena questions herself silently before letting out one long, exasperated sigh.

Both April and Helena follow the woman with annoyed glares at the clear judgement being thrown their way. Almost in unison the blonde and brunette tut and flick their hair over their shoulder before returning attention back to one another.

"'Bubi Bear', you haven't long been out of rehab. I understand you and Grant have genuine feelings but he is still married and I'm worried what this will do to you if, well if it doesn't work out for whatever reason." Helena explains more bluntly this time, hoping her message would get across with one of her oldest and dearest friends.

Having not been expecting such a reasonable reasoning, April finds herself somewhat unable to respond. Her jaw hangs open for a moment as her foot taps nervously on the flooring as her mind frantically searches for some kind of rebuttal.

"That isn't the point though Helena. Nothing has happened between Grant and me, you said it yourself." April meekly answers, her voice cracking slightly from her lack of confidence behind her words.

Helena's face turns deadpan and with soft eyes she just looks one of her dearest friends down with a knowing stare. It killed the English beauty to have to be so forthright with what she was saying but it was the only way she knew to make April actually listen.

'Screw you 'Square Bear' for being sensible and … right. That's 'Hair Bear's' job.' April's inner voice screams knowing every word her best friend just spoke was undoubtedly correct. Hanging her head back, April rubs at her forehead and tries to calm the emotions swelling from her gut.

The taller of the two members of 'The Hair Bear Bunch' can't help but feel awful and delicately reaches out to take her friend's hand but the bombshell blonde bats the gesture away. It was April's defence, keep Helena out of arms reach knowing herself well enough to know it wouldn't take much for her to crack.

Never one to give up easily, Helena persists and reaches out once more, this time actually taking April's quivering hand in her own. The contact stills the small blonde for a moment before she turns with tear filled eyes and gulps trying to contain them.

"What, what do I do 'Square Bear'? I think I love him." April whispers out in a struggle as Helena feels her heart completely shatter and she wastes no time in tugging the beautiful woman in close.

"Oh honey, it's okay. It's going to be okay I've got you." Helena assures in a hushed whisper as her hand cups the back of April's head and holds her now sobbing friend against her slender frame.

'Well done Helena, you've completely broken 'Bubi Bear'. When will you learn to just keep your damn mouth shut?' Helena berates herself internally as April's crying becomes louder and louder with each sob which passes her lips.

A creak of the stall door opening back up catches Helena's attention as the older woman from before emerges. With her nose fully in the air and attitude dripping from her every move, Helena feels her temper ignite and her thin upper lip curls into a snarl.

"Haven't you ever seen a woman have a breakdown in a public bathroom before? Keep walking sweetheart before I give you a reason to have that disgusting look on your face." The normally reserved English beauty warns with words as cold as ice and a stare made for medusa herself.

As the sound of the woman's rapid, fearful footsteps echo inside the bathroom, April peeks out from the safety of her friend's chest and spots the woman running for her life. Even though crushed, her perfectly applied make-up now smudged and eyes wet from tears, the southern belle can't resist the cackle which in turn escapes her lungs and causes Helena to begin a fit of laughter also.

Lifting her head and looking up at Helena with shimmering orbs, April nods her head tenderly and reaches down gripping the English woman's hand giving it a secure squeeze.

"I love you 'Square Bear'." April whispers tenderly in thankfulness for the friendship she had with the much taller woman still holding her close.

"And I love you." Helena replies instantly as she uses her height to her advantage and smoothers the southern belle back into her body for a tight hug.

The theatre was now rumbling with the buzz of conversation from awaiting, nervous, proud and some restless family members of the kids competing. Sat with Lucas happily on his lap, Grant finds himself watching the still rather manic scene in front of him with some trepidation.

"Now, don't misunderstand me son. You can do whatever in the world makes you happy and I will always be there cheering you on front and centre. Just, if it ends up being with parents like this involved don't expect me to mingle much." Grant informs his son with a hearty chuckle before his brown orbs spot both his mother and niece shuffling down the row of seats.

Dolly was leading her eldest grandchild by the hand, with every step she takes Lexi is lurched forward. The brunette normally wouldn't allow even Shelby to do this but this wasn't just anyone, this was Dolly Corcoran.

'Does she think she's going to lose me in the crowd or is she just making sure I don't rush backstage and nut Jesse? Eh, it's a toss-up.' Lexi mentally debates as finally the grandmother and granddaughter make it to Grant and Lucas.

"I'm surprised you found me, this place is huge and completely packed." Grant remarks as he stands and greets Dolly with a kiss to the cheek with Lucas in his arms.

Dolly turns to Lexi and with a not so gentle nudge pushes the sixteen year old down into her seat with a warning glare emitting from her eyes. The bottle blonde then turns to her son and raises her eyebrow in slight amusement.

"I love you Grant but you and your bald head kind of stick out like a sore thumb. It really wasn't all that difficult." Dolly playfully explains before she tucks her skirt behind her knees and sits down herself.

Grant is struck silent by the comment and looks over Dolly to Lexi who at this point is just grinning at him widely. With his long arm he reaches around his mother and flicks his niece in the side of her head before chuckling. Lexi flinches in defence playfully and just gives a 'what?' expression in return.

"It was funny Uncle Grant and I'm sorry to tell you but true as well." Lexi points out with a smirk as Grant goes to flick her once more earning a slap from Dolly to his aforementioned bald head.

"Grant, you're a grown man. I swear you're a bigger kid than Lucas half the time." The grandmother chastises with authority although you could tell she was somewhat playing the art as well.

Lexi of course can't help but gloat from her safety position beside Dolly and laughs mockingly at her uncle who had just been 'told off'. The sixteen year old felt sick currently, the impending devastation which was about to hit her baby sister was something Lexi could barely cope with so this natural, back and forth, playful banter was at least helping somewhat as a distraction.

'Just please let Rachel get to perform before this shit storm hits. She's deserves it and so does mom.' Lexi silently prays to whoever may be in the position to both listen and help.

Shelby's nostrils flare as she inhales deeply while continuing to stare into Jesse's now terrified orbs. He hadn't yet began to physically shake but the mother knew it wouldn't be far off now.

"Uh, is something wrong Shel-" Jesse attempts to break the awkward ice only to have Shelby's authorities voice cut him off almost instantly.

"'Coach' Corcoran Jesse, I am 'Coach' Corcoran to you and nothing else. Is that clear?" Shelby correct curtly, her upper lip curling with each word as her eyes stay transfixed on the now even more confused and increasingly fearful fourteen year old.

In a second all colour that the make-up team had applied to Jesse's face becomes useless as he pales to the complexion of 'Casper : The Friendly Ghost'. A thick, slow gulp is pushed down the teen's throat as Shelby's gaze remains frozen in place and intensity.

Taking one slow step forward, the choir coach looms over Jesse's shorter stature and grits her pearly white teeth like a great white about to pounce on its chum. The way Jesse sucks in a desperate need for air almost breaks the enraged mother into a chuckle but she somehow manages to keep it at bay.

'You have him shaking Shelby, don't ruin it now. You may not be able to do much, yet but for now you can at least put the fear of god in him.' Shelby's mind informs the mother side of the teacher's mind as she sets her sights in punishing Jesse in whatever way she currently can.

Beads of sweat form on Jesse's forehead as though he was a prisoner of war being interrogated underneath a harsh, bright light. Both of his blue eyes dilate from the uneasy sensation now crawling underneath his skin the longer Shelby's eyes burn into him. His breathing was becoming shorter and more pant like with each passing millisecond.

"I know Jesse and for now you're safe but when the time comes, believe me you'll be anything but." Shelby remarks callously, her words sending a shiver down Jesse's spine as confusion knits his brow together in the middle.

Shaking his head unsure what had just caused his choir coaches sudden personality switch, the male lead of Vocal Adrenaline suddenly locks eyes with Shelby once more. The brunette singer suddenly looks like a deer caught in the headlight of an oncoming truck and every organ inside his body drops to his feet. Flashes of the only possibly reason he can come up with for this rage spins across his mind and realisation hits him like a ton of bricks.

"Lara?" Jesse's pathetic, whispered voice chokes out as his teacher and coach slowly pulls back up to her full height.

Shelby knew she didn't need to say or do a single thing to confirm Jesse's panicked conclusion and instead she just enjoys watching as the paled features of the usual cocky fourteen year old are washed over with fear, regret, worry and realisation. A small hit of satisfaction warms Shelby's protective 'Mama Bear' heart knowing, if even for a brief second, she was able to give Jesse just a taste of what her beautiful little girl was going to go through.

'It's nowhere near what you deserve Jesse but let's hope the panic and fear that's now choking you lasts as long as possible. Now though, I need to do my job and make sure my baby gets her time on that stage to shine.' Shelby's inner voice declares strongly as a smile graces her plump lips, somewhat pleased with herself. The mother of two spins in the opposite direction of Jesse and marches off to find her team ready for their final speech.

Now settled in her seat, hair placed back where it belonged and make-up checked, Dolly returns her hand compact back into her purse only to notice Lexi's phone was flashing. Taking the device out the grandmother turns to Lexi in puzzlement and somewhat dread.

Lexi's eyes glance down at the screen and a rising rush of the need to be sick runs down the inside of Lexi's jaw. Her grandmother passes her phone over and into now trembling hands and all the sixteen year old can do is hold her breath as she unlocks her phone to a brand new message from Lara.

'It's a good job I can't even read this. G-mama is going to have to do it.' Lexi's mind rationalises as the tall brunette quickly thrusts the screen back under the older woman's nose.

Squinting at the bright screen in the rather dark theatre, Dolly brings Lexi's hand holding the phone up closer to her face. Like her grandchild Dolly is filled with dread but she knows whatever this little bitch has now sent it needed to be read.

'Lexi, time is running out. Don't forget, the second she steps foot on that stage I send that video to everyone in VA and everyone at Carmel and beyond. This is your last warning, don't let your baby sister down now.'

Dolly's teeth clench together so tightly she could crack a walnut as each word burns into her brain. Shaking her head in utter disgust, the bottle blonde gently pushes Lexi's hand back down to her lap and regains eye contact with the sixteen year old.

"She's just reminding you that if Rach performs, the video gets sent around. She's a vindictive roll 'Cookie'. I wish I could tell you we will sort it out but we both know no matter what we do or don't do, Lara is sending that video and blowing 'Tweety's' life into pieces." Dolly reluctantly reveals the contents of the message to her eldest granddaughter who looks about ready to either break down or break bones.

Nodding her head in reluctant acceptance, Lexi lets out a slow, defeated breath and just shakes her head before sinking down in the theatre seat and resting her head against her grandmother's strong shoulder. If Dolly was honest it had not been the reaction she'd been anticipating but she embraces it all the same. The older woman's hand reaches out and removes the phone from Lexi's grasp once more before just cupping both her hands around the teens and kissing the top of her head.

'My poor 'Cookie' she's completely defeated. I know how she feels though. As much as I wish there was something I could do to prevent this, I can't. All I can do is sit back, watch the explosion and be there to pick up the pieces.' Dolly's inner voice silently comments, her grandchild's deflated reaction catching her momentarily off guard.

A prolonged silence drapes over the two as their hearts sink and tempers boil underneath the surface. With closed eyes Lexi uses her breathing to try and calm herself back down, her grandmother's hands wrapped around her own somewhat soothing her also.

"I'll kill her G-mama." Lexi mutters, cutting through the silence like a machete.

A bright smile flashes across the older Corcoran woman's lips, even though she knows it shouldn't and Dolly just bounces her head up and down in a nod of agreement. Both Dolly and Lexi remain still otherwise however and just continue to stare straight ahead at the stage in front of them.

'That's my 'Cookie.' Dolly mentally quip before she takes in a large breath and pats the top of Lexi's hand before sitting back and looking into her eyes once more.

"Whatever happens will happen Lexi but right now we are here and we're going to watch your sister and support both her and your mother. So, let's make them proud and be as loud as we can okay?" The older woman instructs the brunette teen beside her was searching Dolly's green orbs for some kind of guidance.

A slow, sly smirk breaks out across Lexi's plump lips and with a mischievous raise of her eyebrow, the sixteen year old almost silently questions if her grandmother was sure what she had just okayed.

"I will make you regret that, you do know that right?" Lexi asks sarcastically before shifting to sit up straighter in her seat once again ready to fully cheer on her mother and sister with all she had.

Meanwhile, Amanda had gathered everyone just to the side of going into the wings. The host of this year's competition speech to get everything started had just walked on stage to welcome everyone and get things started. The tension between the competing choirs was so thick you could sew a button on to it and being one of the first to perform meant Vocal Adrenaline had added pressure on their shoulders to deal with also.

"I gave you the rah-rah speech last night but I do just want to say above all else I want you to all go out there and enjoy every second. Your hard work and your incredible talent will speak for its self so just soak it up and have fun." Shelby confidently addresses her team, the proud smile across her lips not going missed by anyone.

Shelby's green eyes scan the line of the teenagers under her instruction before she undoubtedly becomes transfixed on the innocent and young ones of her baby. Rachel's smile was as wide as her cheeks would allow and pure happiness evident behind those chocolate orbs.

'My baby, she is so happy. Right now I need to ignore everything I know and just remember I am going to see her perform on that stage s her coach but as her mother for the first time. No matter what happens afterwards nothing is going to take this away from either one of us.' Shelby's determined inner voice sternly informs it's owner.

"Right, last minute vocal warm ups everyone and then get in to position with Amanda and I'll see you all afterwards." Shelby continues her instruction, her hands clapping together for good measure as everyone quickly, enthusiastically and with focus rush off.

Shelby's eyes catch a glimpse of a now completely dejected and seemingly nerve wracked Jesse as he dashes off with the group, only looking over his shoulder briefly until he spots the brunette starring through him in return.

"Mom?" Rachel's voice interrupts Shelby's stare down with the fourteen year old male singer and causes the brunette to spin around.

Before Shelby can open her mouth to ask what it was Rachel wanted or needed, the diva in training crashes into her mother with a slight thud. Small arms intertwine around the mother's waist and Shelby feels her eyes suddenly full of unshed tears as she holds her baby in close.

'he is going to get m cry before she even steps foot on that stage I just know it.' Shelby mentally prepares herself before choking back her emotions and looking down at the smaller brunette with a bright, pride filled smile.

"What is it baby?" Shelby asks softly, fingers delicately and carefully stroking across the back of Rachel's head.

Rachel shakes her head back and forth and just squeezes her mother a little tighter with a contented sigh before pulling back enough to look into her eyes. The fourteen year old shrugs hr shoulders and gives an innocent and sweet smile.

"I just wanted to give you a hug, that's all. I love you mama." Rachel explains before pushing onto her tip toes and placing a tender kiss to a slightly stunned Shelby's cheek.

'Yep, here the tears come.' Shelby's inner voice quips as her green eyes rapidly blink to try and void the waterfall from releasing.

Once again, before the mother of the two brunette's can actually formulate a reply Rachel skips off to catch up with the rest of Vocal Adrenaline in their last preparation before performing.

"I love you too baby." Shelby whispers out to herself as she watches the fourteen year old proudly and wipes underneath her now moist eyes. Who knew having kids was going to make her run through so much mascara?

The competition was now officially underway, the theatre lights were dimed and everyone was sat patiently awaiting their child, grandchild or sibling's choir to take the stage and perform. Well, everyone was sat down and watching apart from two. Helena Rawlins and April Rhodes.

Clambering over the laps and legs of the unsuspecting people in their row, both Helena and April apologise repeatedly with embarrassed nods of their heads as they pass. The taller of the two women leads the way as they navigate down to where Grant, Lucas, Dolly and Lexi were all situated.

"I'm so sorry sir, is your foot okay?" Helena sheepishly asks the man whose foot she had just used for a stepping stone. The annoyed and pain filled grunt is enough to let the brunette know she is best to just move on.

Once Helena is past the man, April shoots the man an annoyed glare and stops her movements in front of him all together. With both hands on her hips, the short blonde stands her ground with annoyance crosses over her features.

"Hey, she said sorry and it was an accident. Try not being a jackass yeah?" April abruptly snarls before carrying on the few more seats down to their waiting party.

'Wow auntie 'Bubi' is having none of his crap.' Lexi mentally comments with pride as Helena finally makes it to the empty seat beside her.

Helena turns to face April at her outburst with disapproving eyes which are met by the southern beauty's raised eyebrow.

"Do not give me that look 'Square Bear' after what you just pulled in that bathroom." April points out sharply as Helena quickly relents and gives a slight, knowing smirk.

Having heard enough, Dolly leans her upper body completely over Lexi and grips the arm rest furthest away. Starring at the two supposed adult women the 'Corcoran' album is quickly put in place. Just like that all confidence is drained from the brunette English beauty and her smaller blonde companion. Their heads bow in embarrassment at their actions and they quickly resemble small children about to be punished.

'Look what you've gone and done now 'Bubi Bear', you've got Dolly pissed at us. Well done.' Helena mentally blames and calls out April, far too fearful to actually speak another word outwardly.

April's small hands knit together in front of her lap as she keeps her gaze fixed on the dark floor of the theatre anywhere but at those intimidating, soul destroying green eyes.

"Sit down the both of you and keep it shut. Rachel is on next and I won't have you two causing a riot, its… uncouth." The oldest Corcoran woman warns firmly, each word punctuated with her tongue clicking the roof of her mouth.

Although she is currently half squashed underneath her grandmother's body, Lexi manages to twist her head enough to watch as both Helena and April silently nod their heads in instant agreement. Although this wasn't how Lexi would have liked to be smiling today it was certainly hoping her do so all the same.

"I'm sorry, I didn't hear you both?" Dolly pointedly prompts the two fully grown women to verbally answer her. Her eyes were yet to leave the two and her expression was completely unchanging.

You could see both Helena and April's inner pride refuse this instruction at first but after a moment they begin to deflate. With reluctant sighs from each pair of lungs, both the blonde and brunette lift their gaze to meet Dolly and clear their throats.

"Yes Dolly. We apologise." They two 'Hair Bear Bunch' members declare in unison before nudging one another down into their respective seats.

It isn't until the two women, now subtly whispering and muttering the blame to one another that Dolly allows a proud grin to cross her lips. Sitting back in her own seat she straightens her outfit and turns to an awestruck Lexi beside her. Knowing why her granddaughter was wide eyed and slack jawed in admiration, the older woman just taps the side of her nose and chuckles.

"One day 'Cookie' I'll teach you everything I know. Not until you've experienced it all for yourself however." Dolly promises before turning back to the stage as Vocal Adrenaline get introduced to perform next.

Just like that Dolly's hand grips onto Lexi's on the armrest and the younger girl squeezes her grandmother's hand in response. At the same time on the other side of her Helena's delicate hands intertwines with Lexi's as well as April's the opposite side.

'Come on 'Star', you've got this.' Lexi's inner voice calls out towards Rachel backstage knowing she of course wouldn't hear a word but maybe, just maybe she would feel it.

This was it, the moment she had worked all of her life up until now for. Rachel Barbra Berry was about to step onto a New York stage and perform. The fourteen year olds palms were sweaty, her legs felt like jelly and she was fairly sure her lungs were trapped in a vice.

'What if I mess this up? What if I let down not only my team mates but more importantly my family, especially my mother. Vocal Adrenaline has won this competition with her as coach so many times, what would it do if the first year I am involved she fails? I can't let that happen I just can't.' The diva in training's inner insecurities begins to pick up pace and volume within the confines of her mind.

Rachel's heartbeat rings like a metronome inside her head, increasing in tempo with every second before suddenly a wave of calm envelopes the fourteen year old. Without any real thought or acknowledgement, Rachel shuts her eyes firmly as the moments around her slow down and suddenly her terror and insecurities get drowned out by the encouraging words from Lexi, Dolly and Shelby and replay on a loop inside her mind.

'Okay Rachel, deep breath. Remember this is so different to before, winning is not going to define you or be your worth. The love from your mother, your family isn't conditional on results like with your fathers. It's another competition and your talent will show no matter what.' The new messages of confidence and support soothe the small brunette s they run through her mind.

''Gold Stars' and 'Barbra' I beg of you to allow me to not only do my best but enjoy and savour every last second of this.' Rachel mentally prays as she forces both of her clenched eyes back open and a final intake of breath to fill her lungs.

"I've got this." Rachel softly informs herself without even realising it was out loud just as the music hits and Vocal Adrenaline make their entrance on to the stage.

Vocal Adrenaline command the stage and the audience with every movement and note they expertly hit and deliver. The performance goes flawlessly and keeps everyone captivated from start to finish.

As her team performs, Shelby's eyes can only focus on one person and that was her baby, her Rachel. The 'Coach' side of the brunette would watch and analyse the performance later on playback but in the moment Shelby was purely just a mother.

'That's my baby, you get it baby.' Shelby proudly boasts in her head as the smile across her plump lips can't be removed for anything.

In her heart the mother of two finds herself thinking of all the shows, the performances and just overall moments she missed with both of her girls. It would be a lie to say it doesn't rip at her heart but instead of allowing that sadness to overcome her, the choir coach reminds herself of the many more moments yet to come.

'She is my baby, my little girl so I suppose I am biased but god does she have talent. The world is at her feet and she has no idea. Perhaps that isn't a bad thing but I swear I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure her and Lexi both get everything in life they want and deserve.' Shelby's inner voice comments as her green orbs remain trained on her youngest as she performs.

The stinging of emotion, pride filled tears hits Shelby's green eyes the very second Rachel steps onto the stage but for at least twenty seconds the brunette is able to keep them at bay. They continue to flood her vision and force deep gulps as the mother witnesses her baby soar in front of the audience.

'I am not going to cry, nope. No, I will not embarrass my child in that way I just won't.' Shelby's inner 'Coach' voice sternly states as the brunette tries to fight the stinging sensation rising within her green eyes.

Shelby's heart flutters with every movement Rachel make and note she hits. Even through the noise of her team, the mother's ears easily pick out her baby's voice and focus solely on that. Everything and everyone else melt away in to the distance and Shelby finds herself watching as her little girl performs solo as if it was a private performance only for her mother.

'I don't think I will ever be able to truly comprehend how these two, talented, stunning, warm, loving girls came from me.' The older woman's inner voice points out as for a second the pictures she's seen of a younger Rachel flash across the current image of the fourteen year old on the stage.

Holding both of her arms securely around herself, Shelby's eyes finally release a burst of warm tears that she doesn't even attempt to stop. As a coach, the brunette had experienced this situation many, many times. She'd stood in this exact spot and felt surges of pride but nothing, nothing compared to how she felt witnessing her baby perform.

'Oh who was I even trying to kid that I wouldn't cry? Knew that was a lie the second I thought it.' Shelby chastises herself inwardly before catching a brief moment of eye contact with a mini version of herself.

The performance was coming to an end but at the right moment Rachel spins her head around and catches her mother's tear filled gaze. The younger brunette's lips spread wide into a smile and she offers a quick wink which has Shelby nearly choking on the flood of tears that spill from her eyes in response.

Applause fills the theatre with a rumbling effect as Vocal Adrenaline finish. People jolt to their feet to applaud the team and their performance. Despite the blinding, burning lights of the stage beaming against her eyes, Rachel is still able to seek out and find the loudest supporters within the entire building. Helena, April, Dolly, Grant, Lucas and Lexi were all hooting, clapping, hollering and cheering with their full force and volume. Even Lucas was getting in on the action, his hands clapping together as he yells his version of Rachel's name ''ACH! 'ACH! 'ACH!''.

As wide, brown eyes move along the line of her family Rachel's spots Lexi and almost breaks into a sob seeing such a look of pride within her eyes. With a nod directed directly at her older sister, one to say thank you for everything you have done and I love you, Rachel gives her final bow and exits with the rest of Vocal Adrenaline into the wings.

Standing proudly, Dolly waves her hand at the vision of her youngest granddaughter as she exits the stage. The bottle blonde nods her head in pride before discreetly wiping at her eyes before anyone could possibly notice the tears which had escaped her green eyes.

Unfortunately for the grandmother her actions hadn't been as sly as she thought and is left stunned when she turns to see Lexi beside her smugly holding out a tissue for the older woman. Dejected she'd been caught out the blonde grandmother snatches the tissue playfully before using it to clean herself up.

"Oh shut up you, I'm older than you so I'm more emotional." Dolly insists rather meekly and even pulls a face of disgust at her weak attempt.

Deciding to just shove Lexi instead the older Corcoran woman just giggles and wraps her arm around her granddaughter's waist pulling her in close as everyone starts to settle back down.

To the very back of the theatre a figure, somewhat hidden within the shadows nods slowly at the performance they had just witnessed. Pride spreads over their weary and aged features as trained eyes move their attention to their secondary target.

Looking through the rows of the audience, as everyone starts to settle back into their seats, they quickly pick out Lexi with the Corcoran family. Nostrils flare with deep seeded hatred and blame as the sixteen year olds happy demeanour rubs salt into their own wounds. Redirecting the harsh emotions the skulking figure unclenches tense fists and breathes in deeply. Lexi could and would wait, their first and main objective was still waiting to be achieved so they knew becoming sidetracked by bitterness would only cause harm. With a sharp shrug of their shoulders and reinvigorated determination the person slips back out of the theatre fully focused on their plan of action.

As Dolly, Grant, Lucas, Helena and April all return to their seats, Lexi feels a strange sensation cross the back of her neck. It was like a shiver but with an edge to it which causes the sixteen year olds skin to tingle in an unpleasant manner. Snapping her head around with wide eyes like a cornered animal, Lexi's heart picks up panicked speed as she searches for the cause of this unusual sensation.

'What in the hell?' Lexi's inner monologue questions as brown orbs find nothing but waiting audience members and the odd person ducking out for either a cigarette or toilet break.

The sensation begins to lessen and slowly the teenager's heart rate returns to normal. Confused by the feeling Lexi just frowns. Deciding it was nothing more than one of those unexplainable moments your body sometimes has like a cold shiver for no reason or random spasm of muscles, Lexi takes a breath and returns to her own seat.

Now in her seat once more, Lexi's attention turns to her grandmother whose face had suddenly fallen and her green orbs were locked in on Lexi's phone again. It was illuminating Dolly's solemn but stunning features as it blinks to let its owner know of another new message. Lifting her older gaze to meet with Lexi's the two women have a shared thought and quickly jump back to their feet and scramble without explanation over the laps of their family in order to get back to the backstage area.

With her heartbeat racing, limbs tingling and eyes blurred from tears Rachel doesn't see her mother swoop in and pick the petite fourteen year old clean up off of the floor. Shelby's upper strength easily holds Rachel close as they spin around in circles several times just clinging to each other.

The rest of Vocal Adrenaline watch for a moment before leaving the mother and daughter duo alone for some private time. They were all buzzing and pumped up from their performance as they shuffle back to their designated waiting section in the backstage area.

Strong and timed arms pull Rachel's petite body in against the coach's chest as the momentum of the spinning lifts the fourteen year olds legs up and out the faster the rotation becomes. Frantic and love filled kisses pepper over Rachel's cheeks and face as Shelby finally places her daughter back onto the ground.

"I am so very proud of you baby. Did you enjoy it? Oh, look at you. Come here." Shelby gushes, her arms unable to resists tugging the younger brunette back In to her arms.

Happily squashed once more within the warmth and comfort of her mother, Rachel's brown eyes close and a pleased smile spreads over her lips. Resting her cheek against Shelby's chest the diva in training just soaks in the admiration and out pouring of love as she attempts to come down from this wonderful high.

"It was … sensational mama. Thank you, thank you so much." Rachel expresses almost in a whisper as her overwhelming emotions begin to rise up inside her.

Shelby frowns at the thanks being given her way and quickly looks down at her baby, tenderly stroking her hair back and forcing the girl to make eye contact with her.

"What are you thanking me for baby? That was all you out there and I couldn't be more proud or happier for you." Shelby explains, the teary smile across her lips melting Rachel's heart even further than it had been already.

"I'm thanking you for everything mama. For saving me and Lexi, for putting up with us, for teaching me and coaching me. I'm thanking you for being my incredible coach but I'm mainly thanking you for being my mom." Rachel reveals sincerely, the softness of her eyes more evident due to unshed tears glazing them.

'Okay, as if I wasn't crying hard enough before.' Shelby mentally comments as the tears get renewed with force at her baby girl's sweet words.

Before the older Corcoran can reply though, Rachel leans up and wraps both arms around her mother's strong shoulders. Leaning in closer she presses a kiss with a smack of her lips against the older brunette's cheek before squeezing herself in as close as she can to her mother.

"Rach!" Lexi blurts out breathlessly as herself and an even more out of breath Dolly burst into the backstage area.

Turning to the unexpected guests, both Rachel and Shelby frown although their frowns come from different places of confusion. For Rachel it was complete obliviousness to their presence and for Shelby it was from fear of why they were there.

'Well this can only mean Lara has gone through with her threat. Fuck it.; Shelby's 'Mama Bear' voice picks up, the twisting in her stomach increasing tenfold.

Rachel's small body tucks perfectly against Shelby's side, her arm wrapped around the taller brunette's waist and head resting on her chest in a relaxed manner. Her eyebrow cocks up slowly as she shrugs her shoulders slightly.

"What are you both doing back here?" Rachel asks in a form of a chuckle as she feels her mother's grip around her shoulders strengthen.

"We uh, we just wanted to come and congratulate you 'Tweety'. You were truly a star out there and I couldn't wait to tell you in person." Dolly replies quickly, her words truthful although their reasoning a cover up for their sudden appearance.

Lexi watches her grandmother expertly take over the moment and breathes a sigh of relief, as quick as she was herself at thinking on her feet Dolly was on another level. Playing along though the sixteen year old rushes over and hugs both Rachel and Shelby at the same time.

The group hug is something that catches both the fourteen year old and mother receiving it off guard. They of course happily return the embrace though and Lexi takes the moment to try and settle herself back down.

"I am so proud of you 'Star'." Lexi whispers delicately into her younger siblings ear as she pulls back slightly and turns her worried eyes to her mother the opposite side of Rachel.

The mother and daughter speak silently through a look a Rachel beams with pride, her cheeks blushing at the praise being given to her by the people it meant most to come from.

'I don't believe I have ever felt so loved in my entire life. I've made them all proud of me and it isn't even known if we've won yet. I mean I presume we will after that performance or at least we'll be in the final ten but still.' Rachel's mind contemplates silently as her smile only spreads wider and wider.

'We really can't stop this from happening can we mom?' Lexi's inner voice questions silently as she stares into the knowing eyes of her mother.

Shelby discreetly but sympathetically shakes her head in agreement before feeling Rachel tug away from the embrace and head over towards the waiting area which now continued the rest of Vocal Adrenaline.

'Thank the lord I took their phones from…' The confident inner voice inside Shelby's mind is silenced when her green eyes notice every single member of her choir coach now had their devices back in hand.

The instinct within the brunette mother is to reach out and stop her child but Rachel was too fast and Shelby knew the second she did that Rachel would realise something was up. Whatever she did in this moment, Shelby knew there was nothing she could now do to keep Rachel protected.

Perhaps due to her younger age, Lexi actually does leap forward but is caught and prevented in doing so by Shelby whose strong arm wraps around the sixteen year olds waist. The younger of the two brunette's snaps a glare to her mother in protest of her stopping her but quickly melts realising she was only fighting a losing battle.

Oblivious and delirious with the adrenaline of such an incredible performance surging through hr veins, Rachel al but skips over to join her fellow Vocal Adrenaline members. The moment her presence is noticed however Rachel's stomach twists uncomfortably feeling everyone's attention on her but not for any good reason. The diva in training is so concerned she isn't even able to voice her worries and instead just searches the starring eyes for some kind of an answer.

'Oh dear 'Barbra' has my make up smudged or something? Why is everyone suddenly silent and looking at me as though my puppy just died?' Rachel's overworking mind questions as the tension in her body gets to breaking point.

Embarrassed and devastated for their friend the fellow VA members share a knowing and defeated glance before Gemma decides to be the one to bite the bullet. Stepping forward and avoiding eye contact with a now wide eyed and close to tears Rachel, she just hands her phone over and shakes her head in sympathy for what Rachel was about to see and feel.

Unsure how to react, the diva in training just allows her eyes to fall down to the screen in front of her. It is in that moment that every ounce of happiness, accomplishment, pride and love in the fourteen year olds body disappears within a second. As if on instinct, Rachel raises her head and her now blurred eyes seek out Jesse without even thinking about it.

Rachel sees the look within the eyes of the boy who she still loved and knows without doubt what she was holding in her hand was not some kind of mistake or high quality fake. This was true. Blinking furiously few times the brunette continues to stare at Jesse as he sheepishly stumbles forward about to speak.

Before a single sound can leave his mouth however Rachel's hand crashes against his cheek with one of the loudest slaps ever known to man. Everyone recoils as if they themselves had been slapped and stares in stunned silence as Rachel breathes out slowly and burns a hole into Jesse's now tear filled eyes.

"FUCK YOU!"

And after just over a year we come to an end of another chapter.

Like I said at the start I am incredibly sorry for the delay but I just knew for myself and for the benefit of this fic as a whole I had to wait until I was in a somewhat better headspace to sit and write this out.

To those of you who have continued to show me support and love even in my absence I truly cannot thank you all enough. I just want you to know every message, review, follow and favourite is noticed and appreciated dearly. I can honestly say if it wasn't for all of you, even with the love I have to this story I don't think I would have continued.

I have however continued and I am beyond happy that I did. This story is like my own little baby and I have promised before I will never give up on it and I sincerely mean that.

So, to those of you who are still here or perhaps new, from the bottom of my heart thank you. Thank you for taking the time to read the novel sized chapters I put out. I hope more than anything you enjoy them and that I never let you down with what I do eventually put out. I write this with the intention of giving you all something you will enjoy and maybe even love as much as I do creating it in the first place.

If you are one of those special, kind, lovely people who takes that extra bit of time to write me a review or a message or whatever, well my thanks are truly endless, especially after all this time. I honestly don't know how many people still have interest or will read this now after such a long gap but even if it is only one, it was more than worth it. So if you do let me know what you think, feel, suspect, want to see and everything in between you have my most honest thanks from the bottom of my heart.

As always with me I cannot promise when the next chapter will be up but I am going to do everything in my power to make sure it is a lot sooner than over a year this time. With my grieving for my Nan still ongoing and now the added pain and heartbreak of my dad's actions I truly can't anything to quick but I will do it as quickly as I can, that I do promise.

Thank you all once more and whatever Holiday you celebrate at this time or even if you celebrate none, I wish you the happiest, merriest and safest of times.

Until next time stay safe, happy and well ;;'x
