Demonology Brief Lesson: Demons in Religion: Demonology is the study of demons or beliefs about demons, especially the methods used to summon and control them. Demons, when regarded as spirits, may belong to either of the classes of spirits recognized by primitive animism. That is to say, they may be human, or nonhuman, separable souls, or discarnate spirits that have never inhabited a body. A sharp distinction is often drawn between these two classes, notably by the Melanesians, several African groups, and others. The Islamic jinn, for example, is not reducible to modified human souls. At the same time, these classes are frequently conceived as producing identical results, e.g. diseases.
Judaism does not have demonology or any set of doctrines about demons. Use of the name "Lucifer" stems from Isaiah 14:3–20, a passage which does speak of the defeat of a particular Babylonian King, to whom it gives a title which refers to what in English is called the Day Star or Morning Star (in Latin, Lucifer, meaning "light-bearer", from the words lucem ferre). There is more than one instance in Jewish medieval myth and lore where demons are said to have come to be, as seen by the Grigori angels, of Lilith leaving Adam, of demons such as vampires, unrest spirits in Jewish folklore such as the dybbuk.
Task: Write about someone after they've been kissed by a Dementor.
Ties that Bind
1)
The Marauders stand side by side as one of their own is brought into the Vacuum.
'How did we get here,' James wonders as he clenches and unclenches his wand hand.
"I should've killed the traitorous rat," Sirius mutters on his right side as he hears Remus hiss "Not now, Pads," in response.
Peter 'Wormtail' Pettigrew is brought into the Vacuum next, on the opposite side of the magically reinforced piece of glass that divides the room in half.
"Peter Pettigrew," a voice intones, "for the crime of being a follower of He Who Shall Not Be Named and bearing the Dark Mark, you have been sentenced to receiving the Dementor's Kiss. Do you have any last words?"
He says nothing in response and only stares at the door he knows he will not remember exiting.
2)
They stoically stare as a dementor comes into Peter's side of the Vacuum; their own side protected by their patronuses.
Wizards and witches usually didn't receive the Dementor's Kiss. The preferred punishment was incarceration in Azkaban with the creatures patrolling the cells to suck away the will of the prisoners so they wouldn't escape. However, captured Death Eaters didn't receive the luxury of long-term imprisonment. Once it was proven that they received the Dark Mark with their own free will and committed crimes while bearing the Dark Mark on Voldemort's behalf, they were sentenced, with no exceptions.
Knowing the criteria for the sentence didn't make it hurt less for James, Remus, and Sirius.
3)
The guards carry the shell that was once Peter Pettigrew out of the Vacuum, leaving the remaining Marauders alone in the room.
"Remember when we decided to become Animagus," Sirius asks, breaking the silence.
"Peter was so afraid that he wasn't powerful enough to do so," James quips.
"And in the end, he was the first of you to complete the transformation," Remus states, a fond smile crossing his face.
They stay in the Vacuum, swapping stories of the exploits the four of them got into during their years at Hogwarts.
4)
He doesn't know how much time has passed since he received the Kiss. He is vaguely aware of his surroundings, but he can't interact. The shell that was once was his body is cared for by the healers assigned to Azkaban's medical wing.
Sometimes he receives visitors. When his mother visits, she cries over his fate and wonders what she did wrong as a mother that led him to his fate.
Sirius visits too, always alone, always on his Kissed Day. Sirius torments him with updates of the outside world. On the last Kissed Day Sirius visited, one of the healers asked why Sirius visited him on that date.
"To remind myself of the importance of the choosing the correct ties that bind," he answered cryptically as he left.
Peter Pettigrew wishes every moment of his continual trapped existence that he had thought of that before he pledged himself to a lost cause.
