Amazing Grace...
How sweet the sound...
Twenty year old Emma sat up on Walton's Mountain, staring at Grandpa's grave. It was 1941, and six months ago, the old man had died of a heart attack while planting seeds. Everyone missed him dearly. It gave Emma peace to be close to him, even more so, now that World War Two was exploding. Rumours were being spread that America would join soon, but she wasn't sure how true that was.
John Curtis was playing with some flowers beside her. Emma was off work, which was unusual for early spring. Mary Ellen had a shift at work, so Emma had just decided to bring her little nephew with her that morning.
"Emma? Mama told me I would find you up here."
A cold chill ran though her heart before she realised who was talking. "John Boy!" She shrieked, turning and barrelling into her big brother.
"Em." He laughed, his eyes twinkling when Emma looked into them. "I guess Grandpa dieing, and the war still going on made me realise how much I wanted to come back."
"You're staying? But what about work?" Emma said softly.
"I'm sure I can find something here." John Boy's smile didn't reach his eyes. "Is this my little nephew John Curtis? How big you are!" He exclaimed, scooping the little boy into his arms.
"He's nearly two." Emma said proudly as John Curtis laughed cutely. "His eyes are like Mary Ellen's."
"They sure are." John Boy chuckled, before taking his sister's hand and starting to walk down the mountain. "So, you and Ben are going strong?"
"Yeah. I love him." Emma blushed, regretting her decision to tell him instantly. "How are you?"
"I'm good, but mama thinks I have a cold." He sniffed. "She's right."
That night as she sat in a diner with Ben, Emma couldn't help but think to herself that he was acting strangely. His hand kept rushing to his pocket, and he seemed on edge. It wasn't her fault that she guessed what was going on.
"Emma, I have something to ask you." His blue eyes met hers, and he swallowed.
Emma tilted her head, heart beating fast. "Y-yes?"
"Will you marry me?"
"Oh, Ben, yes." Emma broke into a wide smile, got up from her chair, and planted a kiss on his lips. "I love you."
"I love you too." Ben slipped a small ring on her finger, and kissed her back. They both knew that they wouldn't be getting married instantly, it would be best to wait and save their money.
