Chapter 47: Of Dinner and Dessert

Tommy and Kim sat at the hut's table two hours later. They were cutting pieces of fish with their knives. Bowls of coconut sat near their plates. His lantern sat on the bookcase. It filled the hut with a great deal of light. The rest of their fish hung on a hook above it. They got the fish on their forks after finishing their cutting. They popped them into their mouths. They chewed and swallowed with quiet gulps.

Tommy and Kim proceeded to cut more of their fish. They managed to catch four more fish before they decided they were done for the day. He cut open one with his knife and cleaned it out. She was a little disgusted by it at first, but she relaxed. She asked if she could clean the next fish. He agreed to let her do that. She managed to do it without any problems. He was proud of her.

He told her they could cook the fish on sticks over fire or in pots and skillets. She thought both scenarios to be very good, especially since they could cook it over a campfire outside. She asked if they could cook their fish in their skillet inside the hut. He said that would be fine. They decided to cook two coconuts in the pot first. They cooked their fish in their skillet next.

Tommy and Kim finished cutting their fish. They scooped them onto their forks and placed them in their mouths. They chewed at a slow yet steady pace. Neither of them noticed a scarlet macaw flying in and landing on the windowsill. It tilted its head as they swallowed with quiet gulps. They couldn't help but smile.

"Talk about some good fish," she said in amazement.

"I can't argue with that," he agreed. "The best part about this meal is it was caught fresh from the ocean."

"It is free of contaminants too," Kim added, squeaking in much joy.

"Oh, yeah," Tommy responded in much happiness. "We have no need for a fishing license."

"We don't have to buy bait either," Kim pointed out and spoke gibberish. "Jason told me bait can be a little expensive."

"It depends on the kind of bait being used," Tommy said while laying his silverware down. "Some fishermen don't use real bait at all. They use fake bait."

"No way," Kim yelled in surprise.

"I wish I were kidding, but I am not," Tommy answered in much seriousness. "The fake bait most fishermen use is worms. The worms actually look realistic enough to fool fish into believing they are food."

"Wow," Kim exclaimed with raised eyebrows.

"Other fake bait includes bugs and fish," Tommy commented and scratched his chin. "They look realistic enough to trick fish as well."

She grabbed her spoon and dipped it in the coconut. She got a decent amount on it. She placed it in her mouth and chewed. She swallowed and let out a loud gulp.

"I didn't think we would catch more fish after the first two," Kim said and laid her silverware down. "I'm glad we did."

"Me too," Tommy replied. "You did a great job catching half of them."

"So did you with the other half," Kim said and flicked his nose. "One fish even smacked you in the face after you got it off the hook."

"At least I didn't lose my grip on it," Tommy pointed out with much pride.

She gave him a warning look while shaking her finger at him. "Don't show too much pride. It will bite you on the ass."

"I don't care," Tommy said, sitting up tall and proud. "I will show as much pride as I want to."

"All right," Kim said in a playful voice. "You asked for it."

He blew a raspberry. "Come and get me. I dare you."

Kim reached over and tickled her boyfriend's sides. He laughed in much delight. He retaliated by unleashing a tickle attack on her stomach. She shrieked with much laughter. She was so loud that she scared the macaw off. They pulled their hands away from each other and became quiet.

"When Emmeline noticed Richard looking melancholy during their dinner in The Blue Lagoon, she smiled at him in hopes of making him feel better. It didn't work," Tommy said, propping his head up with his elbow.

"Then she grabbed a hat and pipe. She put the former on her head and put the latter in her mouth. She pretended to be a man. He asked what she was doing. She said she was trying to cheer him up. She started tickling him. He tickled her back," Kim said, laughing and clapping three times.

"They started laughing, but they heard something. They became quiet. She closed the music box, so they could hear it better. He wondered if it was another person. She feared they would be mean. He vowed he would spear them if they were. He poked his makeshift fork into his fish," Tommy said with a snort.

"Richard vowed to protect Emmeline and Paddy if the natives came to their side of the island. He said he'd stick it to their eyes and gizzards. He also said he would stick it to their bellies and watch their guts come out. Then he threw his newly made spear at a fruit. It struck the fruit," Kim added with a cringe.

"He was already showing his fatherly side, even if he didn't know it yet," Tommy pointed out truthfully.

Kim picked up her fork and poked her fish with it. "She was already showing her motherly side, even if she didn't know it yet either. She tried to comfort the crying Paddy, though she wasn't succeeding."

"Richard went over to the tiny island where Paddy Sr. died. He looked at his skeleton that was bleached white due to the sun. He touched his ribs, matching them to his caregiver's. Then he looked at the bones in his hands. He seemed to have a better grasp on his own body as well as death," Tommy explained.

"Sometimes, I imagine that Richard, Emmeline, and Paddy were rescued by Arthur and his crew. The little family woke up. Richard and Emmeline were happy to see him. They introduced Paddy as their son. They headed to San Francisco. It took them a while to readjust to civilization," Kim said.

"Unfortunately, it didn't play out that way," Tommy whispered, sadness lining his voice. "Richard and Emmeline were dead at the very beginning of Return to the Blue Lagoon. Paddy was rescued and renamed after his father. He returned to the island where he was born with Sarah and little Lilli. He grew up happily there. After his adoptive mother died, he and Lilli fended for themselves. They fell in love and married. They had an encounter with 'civilized' people. Sylvia tried to steal Richard from Lilli, but she failed."

"After Quinlan's demise, Richard and Lilli decided to stay on their island for the sake of their unborn child. They had their daughter," Kim said sweetly.

Tommy sighed softly. "That little family deserved their happy ending."

"Many people deserve happy endings, but they don't always happen," Kim murmured with a frown.

"Maybe they don't, but many come mighty close," Tommy answered, leaning over to kiss her cheek.

"Mm-hmm," Kim said with a nod. "I hope we have our happy ending here, Tommy. I don't want it anywhere else."

He tapped her nose with his finger. "Me neither, Kim."

Tommy and Kim kissed three times. They grabbed their silverware and proceeded to cut more of their fish.

Tommy and Kim dipped their spoons into bowls filled with passion fruit forty-five minutes later. They got a decent amount on them. They put them in their mouths and chewed at a slow pace. They swallowed while gulping quietly. They licked the undersides of their spoons. They smacked their lips before smiling at each other.

"Great idea at suggesting passion fruit for dessert," Tommy complimented and made a slurping sound.

"Thanks, Tommy," Kim responded with a joyful squeak. "I like mashed bananas with whipped cream as a dessert."

"I like that too," Tommy commented and tapped his spoon on the side of his bowl three times. "Unfortunately, we don't have any whipped cream."

"That's okay," Kim said, a soft chuckle leaving her mouth. "We can still have mashed bananas."

"We should eat other fruits besides bananas and passion fruit," Tommy replied seriously. He put his spoon in his fruit in which he got some on it. He placed it in his mouth. He chewed quickly and swallowed. "It is important we get every vitamin and mineral possible."

"Since this world is modeled after South America, we should be able to find lots of fruit," Kim said.

"Yellow dragon fruit, cape gooseberry, mangosteen, and mammee apple are among the fruits found in South America," Tommy pointed out thoughtfully.

"Those sound delicious," Kim commented while laying her spoon down.

"Dragon fruit can also be found in Asia. You won't find the yellow kind there," Tommy murmured.

"Just don't think of throwing any of the fruits you mentioned at me," Kim joked, a snicker coming out of her mouth.

He narrowed his eyes at her. "I will if I want to."

She pointed her finger at him. "Do it. I dare you."

"Nah. I don't want to hurt you," Tommy said, leaning back and putting his hands behind his head. "No, I don't."

"Spoilsport," Kim mumbled.

"I heard that," Tommy retorted in much playfulness.

Kim made a funny noise. "That you did."

He brought his body forward and kissed her cheek. He rubbed it so lightly that it seemed he wasn't even doing that. He gave it a gentle pat before laying his hand on the table.

"I am so glad I got to learn how to hunt for coconuts and prepare them. The same goes for catching, cleaning, and cooking fish," she said, happiness radiating from her face.

"I can't blame you for showing a little disgust when I was cleaning the first fish. Most people do when they see that for the first time," he admitted.

"I managed to relax," Kim commented as she sat up tall and proud.

"If you sit up any taller, you will hit your head on the ceiling," Tommy quipped and snickered under his breath.

"In the Muppet Babies episode called 'Gonzo's Video Show,' Kermit Skyhopper actually jumped and hit head on the ceiling of his starship," Kim said, giggling to herself. She waved her hands in the air before laying them in her lap. "He was trying to make the 'jump' to lightspeed."

"Fozzie told him he didn't have to jump so high to get to lightspeed. He was dressed as Chewbacca," Tommy answered, crossing his arms.

"That cartoon lasted for eight seasons," Kim exclaimed. "Several episodes featured parodies of popular movies and TV shows. 'Gonzo's Video Show' was a parody of Star Wars." She spoke gibberish.

"Scooter said he looked a nerd in the R2-D2 costume. Skeeter said no one would care because they were getting to the part where Kermit Skyhopper rescued Princess Piggy. She said he did look like a nerd. He groaned in annoyance," Tommy said, giving a shrug.

"The babies' imaginary games transitioned from the nursery into scenes that became 'real' for them. Their fantasies often contained stock footage scenes from popular TV shows and movies. When the pretend game got too dangerous or was interrupted, the scene went away. They found themselves in the nursery once more," Kim explained.

"One of the funniest moments was when a character would open the closet door and reveal a Star Destroyer or a train coming at him. Then he would close it quickly," Kim yelled in great delight. "Imagine if that happened to kids in real life."

"They would be freaking out. That's for sure," Tommy admitted.

"Yeah," Kim agreed while nodding rapidly. She placed her spoon in her fruit. She got a bit on it. She put it in her mouth and chewed. She swallowed with a quiet gulp. "Other frequent themes included the babies coming up with new ways to play with old toys, imagining life as adults, or facing common childhood fears."

Tommy pressed his lips together. He recalled his biggest fear from his youngest years was his house being hit by a tornado. He would get very nervous whenever conditions were favorable for one. He took comfort in the fact that both his birth and adoptive parents gave him comfort instead of telling him to toughen up. Of course, he managed to become tough through taking karate lessons. He rubbed the back of his neck.

"It is nice to be able to live in a place without having to worry about paying rent," Tommy said truthfully.

"We don't have to worry about paying water or electric bills either," Kim added and moved her eyebrows up and down.

"Nor do we have to worry about paying for food," Tommy replied, warmth echoing from his voice. He stretched his arms above his head. He laid his hands in his lap. "It's the life that so many people want."

"Unfortunately, they can't," Kim muttered, frowning quite a bit. "All that costs money. People need jobs in order to pay for them."

"Nothing comes for free," Tommy murmured and licked his lips. "Despite we don't have to pay for rent, food, or water, we still have to work to get the stuff we need." He suppressed a yawn.

"Much of it is easy, especially the gathering of fruit, eggs, and coconuts," Kim responded and sighed in content.

He pointed his spoon at her. "The hardest part is hunting as you have to follow your prey and wait for the right time to strike. You won't always catch it."

"Unfortunately," Kim whispered and sighed heavily. "If you don't succeed, you try again."

"That's right," Tommy commented and kissed her temple. He ran his hand over her hair three times. He stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. "I think you will do very well in learning how to hunt."

"I think so too. I've done quite well in learning how to live off the land," Kim said, giggling.

"That you have," Tommy agreed. "Now, let's get back to eating our dessert."

She winked at him. "Yeah."

Tommy and Kim put their spoons in their fruit. They got a decent amount on them and put them in their mouths. They proceeded to chew.
