"Go, Xatu."
"Tyranitar, I choose you!" Ash grinned. "Mega evolve."
...
It was a couple of days before the champion's league began when Ash discovered that Tyranitar had the ability to Mega evolve. Professor Oak had informed the trainer about his discovery of a tyranitarite, which helped the mega evolution of the particular species become possible to perform. Naturally, Ash was ecstatic after hearing the news and he began to show it to his trusted pokemon after the professor sent it to him.
"Hey Tyranitar, look at what professor Oak just sent me!"
The rock type carefully inspected the item his trainer gave to him and he was unsure about what it was until it finally clicked in his mind, "Is that a mega stone?"
Ash nodded with pride, "Yup!"
"Are you going to teach me how to mega evolve like Blastoise and Gengar can?"
"Yeah," Ash smiled, trusting his friend to wield the power.
Tyranitar then looked down, "But there's only two days until the champion's league begins."
"And?"
"I don't know if I'll be able to do it in just two days," Tyranitar grimaced, having a lack of faith in himself.
His trainer shook his head, "You'll be fine: we've known each other since you were born. If any other members of our family can mega evolve, then it would definitely be you."
"If you say so, I guess," Tyranitar shrugged, choosing to follow Ash's directions.
As Ash hugged his pokemon, he closed his eyes, 'I know that you'll be able to do it: you're one of the smartest Pokemon in the family and you're one of the strongest too. I believe in you and I hope you know that you'll never disappoint me."
...
The people of Johto were in shock as they saw the fully evolved Pokemon change form once more. Will was also taken aback since he had never witnessed a phenomenon such as this in his entire life, but Bruno and Lance were familiar with this concept from witnessing Ash's dramatic battles in the Indigo league. Karen seemed to be more interested in this form of evolution rather than surprised and Koga chuckled after seeing how far the kid had gone, since the gym battle he had with him back when he was a gym leader. Tyranitar had now developed armour that was stronger and it had larger spikes. He had also grown taller, which intimidated Xatu ever so slightly.
Completely baffled, Will furrowed his eyebrows, 'That shouldn't be possible: Tyranitar is a fully evolved Pokemon, as far as we know. It looks like the evolution was connected with the stones both of them have. I'll have to see what I can do to overcome this obstacle.'
Noticing his pokemon' breathing, Ash asked, "Tyranitar, are you still okay to battle?"
Focusing on the battlefield, he answered, "I'm alright, why?"
Ash shrugged at his reply, but his voice still had a trace of concern in it, "Just making sure."
"Don't worry: you can rely on me to win or at least tire Xatu out," Tyranitar reassured his trainer.
Confident again, Ash smirked, "I know, so let's get this battle started with rock slide."
"Avoid getting hit by them with psychic."
"Now use iron defence and sandstorm, then ice fang."
After Xatu got hit by the ice fang, Will commanded quickly, "Confuse ray."
"Hit back with foul play."
Xatu's battle commenced intensely, getting attacked with a few super effective moves. Because the psychic type got so focused on the rocks, Tyranitar was able to take that time to boost his power up further and land more moves onto his opponent. Using a move such as confuse ray seemed to be the best option to Will, as it would be able to provide him more time to think of a strategy to use against his challenger whilst Tyranitar was distracted by his confusion. Sandstorm was beginning to bother Xatu a lot too, since it affected him every turn or so. For him, it was gradually becoming more and more difficult to see, as well as concentrate.
"Use grass knot."
Ash scanned the battlefield, "Try not to step on it."
Nodding, he replied, "I'll try not to."
"Use dragon dance while your at it."
"Get ready to fire a solar beam."
The challenger bit his lip, 'Uh-oh.'
"Afterwards, use dazzling gleam and giga drain."
'Double uh-oh,' Ash grimaced. "Tyranitar use dragon dance and iron defence again whilst he's charging up, then dig."
Just before Tyranitar hid himself underground, Will shouted, "Now!"
"When you come up, use substitute and smack down, then earthquake."
Tyranitar prepared himself, "Got it."
Although the power of the solar beam was decreased by the sandstorm, Xatu still did the best he could. Missing the attack, Tyranitar was cautious about the exact time he would decide to emerge from the earth. As soon as Xatu took a moment to process what had happened in the last few seconds, the mega evolved pokemon popped out of the ground and used smack down speedily to get his opponent on the floor. Attempting to follow his trainer's orders Xatu charged into the dark type to perform dazzling gleam and giga drain, only for them to miss due to Tyranitar using substitute. It was a shame that Xatu was unable to gain some of his health back or land a supper effective move on his opponent, but the problem now was that he couldn't fly up into the air again because smack down had been used on him. Sneakily, Tyranitar used earthquake and cleverly used bulldoze as well to lower Xatu's speed. The flying type was not quite struggling yet, but his energy was lowering rather rapidly. On the other hand, Tyranitar was also starting to feel weak too because he wasn't used to battling this much at a time yet.
There was a pause for a few moments, but Ash broke the silence, "Toxic."

Author's notes:
Sorry I haven't updated in a while: I've been spending a lot of time practicing for my taekwondo black belt grading (which I passed!) and I've been ill for a few days now. I may not update as frequently anymore since I have to start preparing for school again, but I'll see what I can do.
Hopefully I can update again soon :)
