Will shrugged, 'It's not all that surprising that he chose to do that. However, I don't see why he would pull such a desperate move when he has about half of his team left unlike me.'

Ash continued to stay calm, 'I've got to finish this battle and this is the best way that I can think of.'

"Xatu, use calm mind."

'I guess that I'm going to have to go in with physical attacks now,' Ash mused, gaining ideas for new strategies. 'Thankfully Tyranitar is a very powerful physical attacker so I should be able to pull this off, considering that Xatu has quite a low physical defence.'

"Alternate between using cosmic power and calm mind," Will ordered. "When Tyranitar comes close to you, protect yourself with steel wing."

The challenger pressed his lips together, 'I'm really going to have to be quick, otherwise Xatu will be able to take Tyranitar down easily.'

"Tyranitar, use rock tomb whilst continuing to boost yourself up in power with dragon dance."

"Once you have finished, use light screen and reflect."

"Brace yourself with iron defence."

'I can see why Will has been spending so much time trying to power up, but I think that he must have forgotten that Xatu is poisoned,' Ash made an analysis on the situation. 'Xatu is constantly loosing health bit by bit; more and more each time. I'm not sure if Will realises that he doesn't have much time left at all before Xatu faints.'

"Prepare a future sight."

"Blizzard, then use facade before the future sight hits you."

"I see what you're thinking," Tyranitar charged in towards the flying type.

Using blizzard was a clever way of blocking he opponent's sight temporarily whilst also having a lot of power, in order to strike with another move as well. Thankfully Mega Tyranitar was slightly speedier than its other form and even though it was only a little bit faster, that still provided more than enough time to land what Ash thought would be the last hit. Although the strength of the moves were reduced by light screen and reflect, they were still very dangerous and pretty certain to take Xatu down considerably his current situation. If the psychic bird was still standing and survived to use future sight, Ash guessed that the match would probably end in a draw. Whether Tyranitar wins, loses or draws against Xatu, the battle will most likely still be on Ash's side. Even if Tyranitar loses the match, Ash still has a few Pokemon left whereas Will is completely relying on Xatu.

Unfortunately for Ash, Xatu was still up on his two feet even after the planned attack and the future sight attack was insanely strong. Tyranitar was left to struggle, as well as the elite four member's pokemon on the other side of the field. There was a lingering silence for at least a couple minutes as the audience was watching the battle intently in order to see the last one standing. During that time there were many wobbles and tripping over rocks, but they weakly made their way up again each time. Even from a long way away, one could see how unbalanced the two of them were. Eventually Tyranitar gave up on trying to maintain his mega evolved form, but was still determined to win and he kept trying. This earned some murmurs across the audience, until there was a thud. It was Xatu, who fell onto the ground with his eyes shut. The referee ran to where the fainted bird was, to check if he was still able to battle or not.

Determined to win, Will shouted, "Get up Xatu, hurry!"

Alas, his strongest pokemon showed no signs of movement and remained motionless on the earth. It took every muscle on Ash's face to not appear to be hopeful or to smile, but deep down the boy was desperately waiting for the commentator to say the words he wanted to hear so badly. Tyranitar was conscious unlike Xatu and was supporting his weight by using his arm as an extra limb. The disappointment on Will's face was evident for his pokemon's loss and the audience was tense as they were anticipating for the battle's results.

Finally, finally the referee ran back to his original position on the sidelines and announced, "Xatu is unable to battle, Tyranitar has won this match. Ash has successfully defeated the first elite four member Will and shall challenge Koga tomorrow!"

Ash's face lit up with joy and gave Tyranitar a huge hug as he heard the news. On the other side of the battlefield Will returned Xatu to his pokeball so that he could rest and the elite four member smiled, noticing the boy and his Pikachu rejoicing at Tyranitar's win. Delia, Tracey and professor Oak were ecstatic after seeing Ash's victory on television. Some of Ash's other pokemon were watching with them and they couldn't contain their excitement when they saw the intense battles. Ritchie knew about the win as well and he felt an urge to get stronger and catch up with his rival, but Gary just smiled and carried on with his research since he was happy for his friend. Meanwhile, Misty and Brock cheering even more for their friend; Togepi was jumping up and down on Misty's lap. The rest of the audience were having conversations on whether Ash would be able to win against the champion or not and about how far he would get in the champion's league.

"You were absolutely amazing, Tyranitar," Ash breathed out, feeling tired and overwhelmed from the huge battle. "You ought to get as much rest as you can: you seriously deserve it after working so hard."

Tyranitar smirked, "I know, Ash."

As Ash returned Tyranitar to his pokeball, Will approached him, "That was one of the best battles I've ever had."

"It was definitely one of mine too," Ash grinned. "Tyranitar has never fought this hard before and your Xatu was seriously tough."

"Thank you," Will took the compliment. "How did Tyranitar change form like that?"

The commentator overheard this conversation, "I don't mean to be rude or to interrupt this conversion, but that's something that I would like to know too."

He gave the microphone to Ash so that he could explain, "Professor Sycamore from the Kalos region has actually discovered this phenomenon and it's a regular thing used in battles there. It's called mega evolution and it gives some fully evolved Pokemon the ability to temporarily evolve. By using a key stone (which the trainer wears) and a mega stone (which the Pokemon wears), your pokemon will be able to mega evolve. There are different ways to wear the stones. For example, some people choose to wear them as a keyring, ring, earrings, a hair accessory, a broach, badge, belt, pin, charm, bracelet, anklet, necklace, any piercings or jewellery. Personally, I like to wear it as a bracelet. However, there is a twist. You can only mega evolve your Pokemon if you have a very strong or close bond with them: you need a close bond to fully connect the stones together. Like I said before though, only some Pokemon have the ability to mega evolve. For example, I am wearing a key stone and the mega stone my Tyranitar uses is called a tyranitarite."

"That doesn't explain how your Eevee was able to change form like that," Will pointed out.

"Yes, that is something that professor Oak and professor Sycamore have been trying to figure out for a while now," Ash nodded. "The other day, I got a call from professor Sycamore and he said that it was most likely an ability that Eevee has. He thinks that it's an ability that hasn't been discovered or named yet, but both of them are still researching into it."

Accepting this information, Will then wondered, "Ah, I see. How did you discover it?"

"Once I earned all eight of my badges in Kanto, professor Oak was telling me about how it was discovered and he trusted me to wield it. He also gave me a key stone and a few mega stones, as well as a list of Pokemon that could mega evolve from professor Sycamore," Ash answered.

"Which Pokemon can mega evolve?" Will asked curiously.

"I can email you a list, if you want," Ash shrugged. "It'd take a while to name all of them now."

Will furrowed his eyebrows, "Well, then which ones can't?"

"That would take a hundred times longer to say."

The elite four member chose to give up, "Alright, then."

"Anyway, you might not even remember all of them: I certainly can't," Ash chuckled.

"Fair enough," Will replied. "I'd be happy if we could have a rematch soon."

"So would I," Ash agreed. "I had a lot of fun battling you."

"I have too and good luck against Koga."
