An hour later, Ace felt his throat dry. He had narrated everything that happened to Professor McGonagall, Professor Dumbledor, Mr. And Mrs Weasley. Without giving names of collaborators, and only using the pronoun "We". He must admit that he owed one to Dumbledore, the man had manipulated the conversation to make it clear that the person responsible had been Riddle, putting Ginny as a victim.
And so in the end, Ginny and Lockheart had been taken to the infirmary, and Professor McGonagall went to organize a midnight banquet, or perhaps it would already be a Breakfast.
So Ace stayed with Dumbledore, both accompanied with their own birds, each on his master's shoulder.
"I think I owe you an apology," said Dumbledore. "That day with the minister, I should have done more to avoid you being taken, fight with the Aurors, and not believe that I would succeed with diplomacy. You spent a few hard months and it wasn't fair to you. "
With everything that happened in the last hours, Azkaban seemed so far away.
"You helped Ginny right now, so we can say that with that we can forget the above."
"What I said about Miss Weasley is the truth, Older and wiser wizards than she have been hoodwinked by Lord Voldemort. As far as the rest of the group is concerned, which you generalize as "We" in the narrative, I suppose I have of giving them Special Awards for Services to the School and - let me see - yes, I think two hundred points apiece for Gryffindor, and Ravenclaw. As I have seen, Miss Lovegood has joined you."
"I see that my crew is well monitored"
"Don't worry, boy, it's the whole school, nothing happens here without me knowing."
"Well, this time I won't say anything against you, maybe thanks to that, is that Fawkes arrived at the right time and helped us."
"Which doesn't mean you can take my phoenix"
"No," said Ace, "I already have an incredible companion" and with that he pointed to Mecha, to which the bird stood tall "Not to say that the phoenixes are not incredible, Fawkes is incredible"
"Wow, maybe I should bring Fawkes every time I talk to you, I think this is the most we've talked about since I met you a year ago." Dumbledore said, "But I'm afraid there's one more question I should ask you. In your narration, you talked about a sword that someone took from the hat "and with that he pointed to the sorting hat that was with the diary on the desk," What happened to the sword? "
Ace's mind traveled to Neville, and on the sword that must be in his hands. "It was stuck in the basilisk, or so I think, it was a bit confusing that"
"I see."
If he believed him or not, Ace didn't know.
"What you need, my boy, is some food and sleep. I suggest you go down to the feast, while I write to Azkaban — we need our gamekeeper back. And I must draft an advertisement for the Daily Prophet, too," he added thoughtfully. "We'll be needing a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. . . . Dear me, we do seem to run through them, don't we?"
Ace got up and crossed to the door. He had just reached for the handle, however, when the door burst open so violently that it bounced back off the wall.
Lucius Malfoy stood there, fury in his face. And cowering behind his legs, heavily wrapped in bandages, was Dobby.
"Good evening, Lucius," said Dumbledore pleasantly.
Mr. Malfoy almost knocked Ace over as he swept into the room. Dobby went scurrying in after him, crouching at the hem of his cloak, a look of abject terror on his face.
The elf was carrying a stained rag with which he was attempting to finish cleaning Mr. Malfoy's shoes. Apparently Mr. Malfoy had set out in a great hurry, for not only were his shoes half-polished, but his usually sleek hair was disheveled. Ignoring the elf bobbing apologetically around his ankles, he fixed his cold eyes upon Dumbledore.
"So!" he said "You've come back. The governors suspended you, but you still saw fit to return to Hogwarts."
"Well, you see, Lucius," said Dumbledore, smiling serenely, "the other eleven governors contacted me today. It was something like being caught in a hailstorm of owls, to tell the truth. They'd heard that Arthur Weasley's daughter had been killed and wanted me back here at once. They seemed to think I was the best man for the job after all. Very strange tales they told me, too. . . . Several of them seemed to think that you had threatened to curse their families if they didn't agree to suspend me in the first place."
Mr. Malfoy went even paler than usual, but his eyes were still slits of fury.
"So — have you stopped the attacks yet?" he sneered. "Have you caught the culprit?"
"We have," said Dumbledore, with a smile.
"Well?" said Mr. Malfoy sharply. "Who is it?"
"The same person as last time, Lucius," said Dumbledore. "But this time, Lord Voldemort was acting through somebody else. By means of this diary."
He held up the small black book with the large hole through the center, watching Mr. Malfoy closely. Ace, however, was watching Dobby.
The elf was doing something very odd. His great eyes fixed meaningfully on Ace, he kept pointing at the diary, then at Mr. Malfoy, and then hitting himself hard on the head with his fist.
Ace made a discreet signal to stop, and turned his attention to Mr. Malfoy.
"I see . . ." said Mr. Malfoy slowly to Dumbledore.
"A clever plan," said Dumbledore in a level voice, still staring Mr. Malfoy straight in the eye. "Because if Mr. Portgas here" — Mr. Malfoy shot Ace a swift, sharp look — "and his friends hadn't discovered this book, why — Ginny Weasley might have taken all the blame. No one would ever have been able to prove she hadn't acted of her own free will..."
Mr. Malfoy said nothing. His face was suddenly masklike.
"And imagine," Dumbledore went on, "what might have happened then. . . . The Weasleys are one of our most prominent pure-blood families. Imagine the effect on Arthur Weasley and his Muggle Protection Act, if his own daughter was discovered attacking and killing Muggle-borns. . . . Very fortunate the diary was discovered, and Riddle's memories wiped from it. Who knows what the consequences might have been otherwise. . . ."
Mr. Malfoy forced himself to speak.
"Very fortunate," he said stiffly.
Lucius Malfoy stood for a moment, and Ace distinctly saw his right hand twitch as though he was longing to reach for his wand. Instead, he turned to his house-elf.
"We're going, Dobby!" He wrenched open the door and as the elf came hurrying up to him, he kicked him right through it. They could hear Dobby squealing with pain all the way along the corridor.
Ace stood for a moment, thinking hard. Then it came to him —
"Professor Dumbledore," he said hurriedly. "Can I give that diary back to Mr. Malfoy, please?"
"Certainly" said Dumbledore calmly. "But hurry. The feast, remember. . . ."
Ace grabbed the diary and dashed out of the office. He could hear Dobby's squeals of pain receding around the corner. Quickly, wondering if this plan could possibly work, Ace took off one of his shoes, pulled off his slimy, filthy sock, and stuffed into the diary. Then he ran down the dark corridor.
He caught up with them at the top of the stairs.
"Mr. Malfoy, "I've gasped, skidding to a halt," I've got something of yours - "And I've forced the diary into Lucius Malfoy's hand. "What the -?" Mr. Malfoy observes the diary.
"I do not know what are you talking about"
"I think you know." Ace said "I think you slip the diary in Ginny's cauldron, that day at Diagon Alley"
"You do?" Said Lucius Malfoy, before passing the diary to Dobby and with them he approached to whisper "Why dont you provide it?"
"Try to do something like that and you will end why a scar bigger than mine."
Lucius Malfoy straightened to turn "Come Dobby"
"Open it" Ace whispered.
Dobby opened the diary and watched the sock.
"Dobby" called Lucius again. "Come, Dobby. I said, come. "
But Dobby didn't move. He was holding up Ace's disgusting, slimy sock, and looking at it as though it were a priceless treasure.
"Master has given a sock," said the elf in wonderment. "Master gave it to Dobby."
"What's that?" spat Mr. Malfoy. "What did you say?"
"Got a sock," said Dobby in disbelief. "Dobby is free."
Lucius Malfoy stood frozen, staring at the elf.
Then he lunged at Ace.
"You've lost me my servant, boy!"
But Dobby shouted, "You shall not harm Portgas D. Ace!"
There was a loud bang, and Mr. Malfoy was thrown backward. He crashed down the stairs, three at a time, landing in a crumpled heap on the landing below. He got up, his face livid, and pulled out his wand, but Dobby raised a long, threatening finger.
"You shall go now," he said fiercely, pointing down at Mr. Malfoy. "You shall not touch Portgas D. Ace. You shall go now."
Lucius Malfoy had no choice.
With a last, incensed stare at the pair of them, he swung his cloak around him and hurried out of sight.
"Portgas D. Ace freed Dobby!" said the elf shrilly, gazing up at Ace, moonlight from the nearest window reflected in his orb-like eyes. "Portgas D. Ace set Dobby free!"
"Least I could do, Dobby," said Ace, grinning. "Just promise never to try and save my life again."
The elf's ugly brown face split suddenly into a wide, toothy smile.
.-.
Ace had been to several Hogwarts feasts, and many others in his past life, but never one quite like this. Everybody was in their pajamas, and the celebration lasted all night. Ace didn't know whether the best bit was Hermione running towards him, and hugged him, screaming "You solved it! You solved it! "Or Justin hurrying over from the Hufflepuff table to wring his hand and apologize endlessly for suspecting him, or Hagrid turning up at half past three, cuffing Neville and Ron so hard on the shoulders that they were knocked into their plates of trifle, or Professor McGonagall standing up to tell them all that the exams had been canceled as a school treat ("Oh, no!" said Hermione), or Dumbledore announcing that, unfortunately, Professor Lockhart would be unable to return next year, owing to the fact that he needed to go away and get his memory back. Quite a few of the teachers joined in the cheering that greeted this news.
"Shame," said Ron, helping himself to a jam doughnut. "He was starting to grow on me."
._.
Two days later Ginny had been discharged, and even though they had already had a party, Ace had insisted they had another one so they all were there.
And so, the twins took food and took it to Moby Dick. They were all sitting on the floor of the strange circle with bleachers, while Ace arrived, who was going fashionable late, Fredy and George had managed to find the list of pirate crew names.
Luna had taken one of the names, the favorite, and drew a flag idea.
"It looks good," said a voice behind her. Just to find Ace, casually standing.
"True, right?" said Luna proud of herself, and before Ace's stretched hand, asking for the drawing, she was handed over.
"And what is this name for?" Ace said watching Luna's stubborn strokes.
"It's for this one," said George, handing him the paper.
Ace watched him, and looked at the other names.
"Is this then the chosen name?"
Fred and George looked at each other, and then looked at the rest of the boys sitting, looking for some objection.
"It's the one we like the most," said Fred.
"Good" Ace returning the sheet "Firebird Pirates will be"
And without further word he climbing the stairs to where were the sacks of collected treasures.
While everyone looked at each other.
Ace opened all the sacks, and took out from one of them a long weapon that they could say was a spear but it was not. This was a broad, curved blade, placed on a pole, it looked heavy, and Ace even by its size it looked very small next to it.
"There is a tradition," said Ace, "which means that after obtaining a treasure, all those who participated in the raid are entitled to an object of their choice of said treasure."
He paused as if he wanted everyone to assimilate what was said.
"And with this we begin, with the one who defeated the monster, a basilisk." and with it he paused, in which all turned their eyes on Neville.
"Me?" said the boy.
"yes, you" said Ace.
"But ... but I didn't do much."
"You nailed a sword to the skull of a giant snake; final blow, that counts as killing the beast."
"But ... I already have the sword"
"That was not part of the treasure," said Ron, "That was given to you by the sorting hat."
"That's true," said Ace.
Neville then stood up and walked to the treasure, while timidly looking for something to take, and not being told anything ... then he remembered something, and with more decision he began looking for the object until he took it out, and showed it to Ace.
"A sword?" Ace said.
"Yes, the others is so fancy this one is more for practice"
"On the other hand, we have someone who told us that there was a treasure, and although she was told that it did not exist she insisted that it did, and she was right. Luna"
Luna stood up and leapt forward on the stairs and a particular sack, where she began to check it, and finally after a while she pulled out a gold jewelry box, which opened and pulled out some large crescent-shaped earrings from it. long of at least four moons hanging from each other, joined with colored stones. Luna introduced them to the group before leaving the jewel box and leaving there.
"They say that the house of Gryffindor is the house of the brave, I think we all are, I also believe that being brave is not being afraid of anything, but knowing how to face our fears, and looking for our greatest fear is a good way to show courage. And more if you go to a spider nest and you have spiders panic. " Ron was clearly disturbed by the memory
Ron stood up and advanced to a sack and pulled out a crown, but then stopped, and Ace watched him think, perhaps he was realizing that despite being a valuable object he couldn't do much with him. After a moment in which it seemed that he would never decide, he finally left the crown and set out to look for something in particular at the bottom, taking out a box and opened it to show a game of chess pieces that seemed to be ivory and possibly obsidian. .
"Very your little brother," said Fred.
"They were not necessarily in the raid, only those who were in the chamber that night, there is someone who was not there but without her we would not have discovered that it was the monster."
"And surely we would be death"
"And surely we would be death. Hermione"
She looked surprised.
"No," she insisted. "I wouldn't know what to do with any of those things."
"Come on, Hermione" said Ron.
"I can't move on to the next person if you don't take your reward" said Ace.
"But I already have the philosopher's stone and I don't know what I will do another summer with it."
"Right," Ace said. "But you're just taking care of it. Now, someone want to take care of the stone this summer."
"I can" said Luna
"See, problem solved," said Ron, "Come on."
Hermione still looked dismayed.
"Would you accept a suggestion of mine?" Ace said.
Hermione nodded, so Ace turned to a sack to get something. He took out a wooden box. With box in hand he descended the stairs, and Hermione stood up. Ace opened the box, inside were scrolls.
Hermione took one, and very carefully opened it, watched it carefully and without losing sight of it, sat down again.
"I think we lost her," said George, while Ace left the box next to her.
"Next. We can say that we have a crew thanks to Fred and George's insistence," Ace said.
The twins advanced, it didn't take long, they took two bags of coins and returned to their place.
Ace watched them thoughtfully, he didn't expect that.
"I guess they have noticed but I don't agree with Albus Dumbledor, but last night I fear I agreed with something. Older and wiser wizards than she have been hoodwinked by Voldemort. This only proves that Ginny is very strong."
Ginny then blushed, and rose from her place to advance to the sacks, to check the contents. It took a while, really when they had collected the treasure, she was still very upset, scared and had let them take over the treasure, while she waited with Fawkes and Mecha. So he had no idea what he wanted, but they were very patient, while she searched, mentioning things they could like. In the end I take an object, something nobody expects, a small knife.
"Only, next time," Ace told her before he returned to his place "that you get to have a problem, tell us."
And with that Ginny sat down.
"Well, I guess that's it"
"You're not going to take something?"
"I already did it, right at the beginning," and with that he placed the weapon in front of him "I took this"
"Ace," said George. "Does this mean we are a crew?"
"Yes. The truth is that the idea didn't convince me, I didn't want to "
"" All my childhood, and all my adolescence, the only thing I wanted was to be a pirate, and those three years at sea were everything I always dreamed of and more. And even in this life, being it again has been what I have wanted most . "
"Being a Pirate was being free, it was having a family, my crew was my family. And for a moment trying to form one here felt like it was a joke, and that I was a captain just felt bad. But while I was in Azkaban, I thought it was not a way to dishonor Ojaji's memory, but to honor him. "
"So if you allow me, I would like to honor his memory"
The twins jumped up raising their arms in victory "Yes, we will be a pirate crew!"
"I knew that he would eventually come around"
"Wait," said Hermione. "Don't tell me I'm the only one who noticed it" and turned to Ace "Even in this life?"
"Yes"
"Just like in a past life," Luna asked.
"I guess, I don't even know what to call it"
"Can we focus first on the pirate crew?" said Fred.
"Don't you understand what this means? Ace remembers his past life. That explains so many things."
"Yes, and we will learn from a true pirate"
"I don't know about you but I'm hungry," said Ace.
"You're always hungry," they all said in chorus.
EPILOGUE
"This is the note." Hermione said handing him the paper with the instructions they had been given.
Ace checked the paper and the letter; before smiling broadly. "I knew he wasn't such a bad person"
