Since explosion was such a powerful move, Latias was already struggling and the fact that Koga told Ariados to use foul play didn't help the situation as it was a super effective move against Latias. Being as reckless as he was, Ash chose to mega evolve Latias. There was already shock among the audience about how Ash even owned a legendary pokemon and it only got worse when they noticed that she could mega evolve. In his opinion, this was the best way to increase the chance of Latias surviving the match. Koga wasn't particularly surprised that Latias managed to pull through the explosion because she was a legendary pokemon, but he also didn't think that she would last for much longer at all. Getting ready to strike back, Ash had chosen a new move for Latias to use.
"Sandstorm, then ice beam."
"Infestation."
"Draco meteor."
"Dig, then leech life."
Although Ariados tried to dig underground to avoid the meteors, she still got hit by them as they were very powerful. Latias was in a worse situation because her energy was being sapped out of her by infestation and leech life, which was bad as they were super effective against her. Thankfully her stats were much higher due to being in her mega evolved form, though draco meteor did lower her special attack stat quite a lot.
"Calm mind, then dragon breath."
"Lunge, then megahorn."
Fortunately, Latias was able to paralyse Ariados with dragon breath and raise her special defence. Whilst Latias did raise her special attack as well, the bug type cancelled that effect by using lunge. Ariados used megahorn, which was a very powerful move to use against the psychic type and she was starting to lose the strength she had to fly. The bug type was slowly getting weaker too, as the sandstorm was taking her energy away and she could hardly move.
"Draco meteor again, then ice beam."
"Dig, then leech life and signal beam."
Ariados tried to dig like her trainer commanded her to, but she couldn't gather the strength required to move so she just stood still. Latias had lost health due to leech life and the signal beam had caused her to become confused. Unfortunately for Ash Latias hit herself hard in confusion, she turned back to her original form and she fainted. Ariados was frozen solid from the ice beam, but even then it was obvious that she was unconscious inside the ice.
"Both Pokemon are unable to battle, so this match is a draw. Please send out your next pokemon."
"Well done Latias, I'm proud of you," Ash hugged her, then returned her so she could rest. "Eevee, I choose you!"
Koga put Ariados back, "Good job, Ariados. Go, Crobat."
"Transform into Espeon."
The elite four member realised, 'Ah, so this is the Eevee with the unique ability. Ash seems to be trying to get the battle on his side, but he made a bad decision by turning her into Espeon. Jolteon would have definitely been a much better option, but that just means that I have a greater chance to win. However, I wonder if he'll make her transform multiple times during the battle or not.'
Misty bit her lip, 'No Ash, why didn't you transform her into Jolteon...'
"Crobat, begin the battle with astonish," Koga ordered quickly. Since Espeon flinched, Koga chose to make his second move swiftly, "Now use bite whilst you're close."
After Espeon was hit by both of the super effective attacks, Ash commanded, "Eevee, use psychic fangs then future sight."
"Ominous wind and leech life."
After using that move Crobat had been powered up a lot and Espeon then got a lot of her health drained by leech life, which was super effective against her. At this point, Ash finally recognised that turning Eevee into Espeon was a bad idea and he decided to think of an alternate plan, 'Crobat knows a lot of dark type moves, so I need her to transform into another eeveelution as quickly as possible. I'd still like to be in an advantage against Crobat, who's part flying type. Ah in that case, Jolteon should be perfect! As far as I know, not many moves a crobat can learn will actually be able to hurt a jolteon. At least I used future sight: that should give us time.'
"Eevee, transform into Jolteon and use wild charge."
"Toxic and confuse ray."
Jolteon took a lot of recoil damage after using wild charge and she also got poisoned, which suddenly put her into a dangerous position. It seemed like it was a little bit too late for Ash to have noticed his mistake. The electric type was also confused and she hurt herself due to her confusion. On the other hand, Crobat had now been hit with a devastating future sight attack. Somehow, the poison type hadn't fainted just yet but he was definitely close to doing so.
"Rain dance, then thunder."
"Try to close the distance and use giga drain."
Ash shut his eyes for a second, 'Please be quick enough, Eevee: I'm counting on you to win against Crobat.'
"Thunder again, then thunder wave."
"Nasty plot and venoshock."
Crobat had been paralysed by the thunder wave and he suffered a lot of pain from thunder, but he also inflicted
plenty of damage onto Jolteon after poisoning her and peering his own moves up with nasty plot. Because the electric type was poisoned, the power of the venoshock attack had doubled. This meant that it was as strong, if not stronger than Espeon's future sight.
"Shadow ball, then wild charge once more."
"Nasty plot, then finish this off with hyper beam."
The electric type had taken more recoil damage from using wild charge and had been defeated by her opponent. She turned back into her original form, causing the referee to announce, "Eevee is unable to battle, so Crobat has won this match."
"Thank you, Eevee," Ash smiled sadly and petted her head. "Gengar, I choose you!"
Koga decided, "Crobat, I want you to stay in battle: you've done well so far."
"Gengar use perish song, then hypnosis and dream eater."
"Use dark pulse."
Crobat couldn't do as Koga told because he was now asleep and he wouldn't wake up. Ash had a good plan up his sleeve and he was almost certain that he'd be able to win. Right now, Koga was feeling a lot of regret, 'I wish I taught my pokemon sleep talk...'
"Hex, curse and dream eater."
One turn had passed. Hex was a great move to use, since Crobat was asleep. This meant that the move's power had doubled. Gengar was new to this battle, which gave him an advantage: he was completely healthy and had enough energy to put the curse onto his opponent. The curse allowed Crobat to lose health each turn, but the price Gengar had to pay was loosing half of his own energy. There were still two turns left and Ash knew that he had very little time to defeat Crobat.
"Hex, then dream eater again."
He did it. Crobat had fainted before the three turns had passed and Gengar was still okay. The referee announced, "Crobat is unable to battle, so Gengar has won this match. Please send out your next pokemon."
"You did well, Crobat," Koga nodded. "Go, Swalot."
Ash asked, "Gengar, can you stay in?"
His pokemon answered, "Yeah, did you think that I was going to say no?"
"I'm going to switch you for a minute, then get you back out so you don't faint from the perish song."
"Sure," Gengar shrugged, before letting himself go into his pokeball.
The trainer mused, 'I'm not completely sure, but I think that this pokemon is from the Hoenn region. I'm going to have to be careful since I've never seen this one before.'
"Emmie, I choose you."
'Oh goodness, he has another legendary pokemon,' Koga grimaced.
