Fate and Destiny are a funny thing. They are so permanent, but yet can be changed by the smallest thing. It can cause the moon and the sun to collide. Or the most opposite Sparks to Ignite.
Book 2: Fight
Chapter 36: The Reckoning
Several weeks later, Zuko slowly began to get better. Ursa and Katara made sure that he didn't go too fast, even though he wanted to get back to work. It was a daily occurrence that he tried to sneak away to his study, just to look over paperwork or sign some documents. But somebody stopped him every time.
"I need to get back to work mom…" he said, whining as if he were 10 again. Ursa fixed his pillows, "Iroh is doing a fine job of taking care of affairs… They can manage without you for a few more days… You still have a fever"
Zuko groaned, "Then I can't stay in this room anymore… I'm gonna start setting the wallpaper on fire here soon" he protested. Ursa sighed, "Fine, why don't we go for a walk through the garden hmm?"
The man begrudgingly agreed, even though he'd rather be heading to his office to get work done. Ursa helped him into a moving chair and pushed him down the hall. She paused before entering the Fire Lady's suite. She hadn't been to this part of the castle yet.
"We don't have to go here mom…" he told her, seeing the fear on her face. Ursa shook her head, "No… I need to go back at some point…"
She pushed him forward and down the halls of useless rooms. She glanced into her old bedroom for a moment but didn't linger long, the memories too painful. They pushed through the gate and out into the garden. Ursa looked around, it had changed so much since she had last been here. She could tell things had been overgrown and then recently tried to come back to life.
"Ozai told servants not to come here… So, when I got here, everything was dead and overgrown… I've tried since then to bring it back to how it once was but…" Zuko paused for a moment, "That was a long time ago…"
Ursa smiled sadly then looked down at him for a moment. She pushed him to the waters edge, sitting on the bench next to him. They were silent for a while, just listening to the wind rustle the leaves and the turtle ducks play.
"Do you remember when we used to come and feed the turtle ducks?" Zuko asked his mother. She smiled and nodded, "They are some of my favorite memories…" she paused and looked down ashamed, "And the hardest to give up…"
Zuko sighed and looked at her, "I don't blame you… For forgetting…"
Ursa tried to stop herself from tearing up, "What kind of mother forgets her children…" she said as one tear fell down her cheek. Zuko reached over and wiped it away, "You had to do it… For your own safety…I understand, and I forgive you…" he told her. She looked at him and smiled.
"I wish there was more I could've done… To protect you from him…" he told her. It was something he always wished he could've done. Maybe he could've stopped some of his mother's pain. But Ursa shook her head, "Everything I've been through has led me to this moment right here… After everything you've been through..."
But Zuko shook his head, "It's in the past... Ozai has done a lot of terrible things... But I'm trying to move this country on from that..."
Ursa smiled at him, "I always knew you would make a great Fire Lord one day..." she told him, pinching his cheeks. A blush crept to his cheeks, "Geesh Mom..."
They both laughed, "I have three beautiful children and I'm so incredibly happy…" Ursa told him, "I have you and Kiyi and… Azula..."
Zuko looked down at mention of Azula. He hadn't told his mother of her condition and what she had become. She was scared of hurting her again. But Ursa only smiled at him, "I already know what has become of my daughter…" she told him. Zuko looked back at her concerned before she continued, "When you became Fire Lord, word quickly spread that Azula was not well… Because everyone expected when the Avatar took down… Ozai…" she paused for a moment, almost choking on his name, "Azula would rise to take his place…"
"Well I…" he rubbed the back of his neck, "I fought Azula for the position in an Agni Kai…"
Ursa looked at him, disappointment on her face. But Zuko cut her off before she could reprimand him, "If there was any other option… I would have done it… There's a lot I would change about that night… But also, a lot I wouldn't…" he thought back, remembering fighting his sister and the shot of lightning. But one thing he didn't regret was kissing her that night. That he could relive for the rest of his lifetimes.
"Does Katara have something to do with that?" she asked him, a small smile on her face. Zuko looked down, a small blush creeping into his cheeks. "She's a wonderful girl…" Ursa told him, "And she would make an excellent Fire Lady…"
Zuko sighed, "We haven't really talked about it… I don't know if that's something she wants…"
But Ursa looked at him and smiled, "The girl went half way across the Fire Nation on a mission long thought not possible… I think she just wants you…"
Zuko looked out across the turtle duck pond and sighed. He hoped for one day to have it all, but all he really needed was Katara.
Katara stood next to Iroh, looking over a map of the Fire Nation, all the advisors, standing before them. "I don't think this masked man is something to be taken lightly… Not only does whatever grudge he has with Zuko run deep… He has Ozai supporters on his side…"
"Who want nothing more than Zuko dead and Ozai on the throne…" Iroh finished for her. "What do you both suggest?" Advisor Chen asked.
"We need to move him…" Katara spoke. The room was silent, all wondering if she meant what they thought she did. "We need to move Ozai" she clarified. With that, the whole room went into uproar.
"That is incredibly dangerous! That is the perfect time for them to attack!" Advisor Wen yelled out, appalled with this plan.
Katara continued with her plan, "The only thing these rebels don't have is benders of the other elements. So with the help of Toph and some of her students, we create a bunker only accessible with earth, water and air bending. This would allow them no possible access to Ozai's bunker. And don't worry… We'll make it… comfortable…" she spoke with disgust.
"And what about Princess Azula? If anything she is more dangerous then Ozai himself. And she could easily lead a charge against the palace" Wen asked her. Katara sighed, knowing Zuko's attachment to his sister, "She is under rehabilitation and is 24/7 monitored… She won't be an issue because I am seeing myself to it to be sure…"
"Any other questions?" she asked, to the panel of quiet advisors before she bowed and left the room. Iroh not far behind her, "I do understand their precautions… It will not be an easy feat to move him, especially willingly"
Katara sighed, looking away, "I know… I'm afraid too"
But her face turned a little harder, hiding some of her child like features.
"But an attack on the palace is coming Uncle… And we need to do everything we can to stop it…"
