Chapter 45: A wolf amongst the sheep
Michael's POV:
His landing outside the great hall was not his finest display of prowess. In his defence, his power had been sorely depleted due to the ongoing war within his temporary vessel, the High Priestess. The situation was made worse by the ever suppressive warding that blanketed the entire mansion attacking and sapping his strength. Standing upright was difficult but Michael managed to succeed as a vampire headed at speed towards him.
Wading through the witch's memories the archangel recalled that the vampire currently marching towards him was none other than the Volkov's second in command. Accessing Astra's muscle memory he changed his stance so he now was slouched over just as the High Priestess had been when she had visited the house earlier.
"High Priestess? I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that you had been summoned. …. Emm.."
"Forgive me Master Valentin. No summons was made, but I felt it was important for me to visit and make sure that the spell work held. After all, given how important the young Mr Winchester is to such an important vampire as Grand Master Volkov, I wanted to make sure that everything was working as it should be."
Michael took in the vampire before him. Sorting through Astra's memories he could tell that the creature in front of him should never been underestimated and he had been responsible for many atrocities over the years. Smirking inward the archangel really hoped there was some way of salvaging the situation as he really would love to have monsters such as the Volkov's on his side as he executed his master plan.
Alas, he internally reprimanded himself as such thoughts were next to impossible, given what he had to do in order to get his sword back. As he recalled Astra's information, he knew it was best to bury such fantasies as there was little to no way of bringing the Clans with him. In short, he doubted whether he would be able to retain the Fischers after his business at the mansion was completed.
"I'm afraid now is not the best time for you to drop in, especially unannounced. As… emmm.. there's an important summit about to begin and I'm needed in the main council room. Also… if you're looking for Grand Master Viktor, he and Bridget are busy with final planning and unless there's something you need to report, I feel you've had a wasted journey." Valentin seemed agitated. It was clear to the archangel that all was not well with the vampire. Body language screamed of stress and uncertainty, two emotions that Michael suspected were quite rare for the vampire in front of him to experience.
Knowing a dismissal and massive hint to leave, Michael chose to ignore by placating. "Forgive me, I would happily leave but all the warding around the building has left me feeling extremely weak, is there somewhere I could go to recharge with some food before I leave?"
Valentin didn't look too unhappy about the situation, more annoyed that there was one more visitor walking around the mansion. Thankfully for the archangel, the vampire chose acceptance. "Certainty…. By all means, please use our facilities. You've been a good ally of our Clan and I get the feeling my Father would want to speak to you later about a number of things. I believe this journey may not have been a wasted one. Please, if you have nowhere to be and have the time, please stay and avail of our hospitality."
"Though I'm afraid that these talks may go on for some time. That said, I believe that Viktor may seek your advice before the end of the day. … Hmmm… in answer to your question, please make your way to the kitchen. I believe the Head Slave, Stanley is around and will be able to help you."
Valentin didn't seem to wait for a further comment, as the second in command abruptly turned and started to head down another corridor, to where Michael suspected there were talks taking place or about to begin. He was unsure as his powers were so weakened he couldn't reach out and find his vampires, never name his sword.
Decision made for him, he turned to find another vampire in front of him. "Excuse me High Priestess, I'm here to escort you to the Head Slave." Michael managed to put a small smile on the witch's face before he was escorted down another corridor towards a back lift. No doubt, the kitchen was located on the ground floor or basement of the mansion. A theory proved right as he felt the elevator descend.
On exiting the elevator, Michael could feel his new vessel begin to breakdown. Despite Dean's magical and miraculous blood, the witch was a poor choice as a workable vessel, he had to hope that she would last as long as he needed her to last. His position was made worse as the much needed energy required to hold his vessel together for longer was too busy being bombarded by the damn sigils that were located all over the building. Given the pressure on him, Michael was surprised he had managed to gain entrance to the building at all, never name land in the centre of it, especially on his first attempt.
Michael was too busy concentrating on keeping his vessel upright and visually in good repair, that he failed to hear the vampire goon that was escorting him introduce him to the Head Slave, Stanley. It took every part of concentration to turn and speak to the human in front of him. "Thank you Stanley for your kind hospitality. I'm in need of rest and…. Energy of some sort." No sooner had he the words out than his legs give away and he would have hit the floor if it hadn't been for the quick reflexes of the vampire standing slightly behind him.
Feeling cold hands lift him up and place him on one of the larger kitchen seats, Michael barely registered the Head Slave speak again. "It's alright, you look exhausted High Priestess, but I've a few remedies that should help perk you right up." Stench hit the archangel's nose as a mug of steaming coloured liquid was placed in front of his vessel. As he considered how best to extradite himself from his current position, Michael realised that his new found weakness might work in his favour.
"I'm not normally this fragile, but travel through the tightened security has me weakened. I'm afraid this may not be enough my dear Mr Stanley. I believe I may have to resort to a more powerful elixir to help refresh my gifts and powers." Using Astra's age to sell his predicament, Michael began to shake and as a result Stanley took the bait. "I know our Grand Master thinks so highly of you, if I can help you I will. What elixir would help you?"
There was his opening to talk about Winchester. "The last time I was here, your Grand Master very kindly give me access to a few special vials of nectar from his bonded slave, Dean Winchester." Michael could see the change in body language from both the vampire goon as well as the house slaves. The very mention of the hunter's name left everyone uncomfortable. Michael could smell fear from everyone in the room.
"I'm afraid that is not possible. Grand Master Viktor is very protective of his personal slave. He would have to be asked but these past few days he's denied anyone access to the slave." Stanley attempted to keep his views neutral, trying not to come across as either gossiping or critical of his Master.
Unfortunately, the vampire goon was less than diplomatic. Chuckling, the vampire added, "well that's an understatement Stan. You'll be lucky to see the human never name touch him or drink from him. Grand Master has him locked up nice and tight in his bedroom and no one's allowed in."
'Dammit!' Michael had known from his last conversation with Astra that Viktor was obsessed with his sword, but he hadn't really contemplated what the side effects of the obsession would entail. That obsession was going to be a problem. Curtailing his interest, Michael weakly replied, "Really! No one has access to the hunter?"
Before anyone could answer, the vampire goon received new orders to return to the second floor and escort a number of the Fischer Clan to the Council room. Michael knew he needed a break. Fortunately for him another slave entered the kitchen. The archangel could tell immediately that the newest human was unhappy about something as he threw a few empty boxes onto the table.
Before the newest arrival began to complain he seemed to realise that the Head Slave was not alone. "Oh apologies, I didn't know we had a visitor." But before the younger man could address Michael's vessel, Stanley interrupted. "Hold your tongue Trevor! You're in the presence of a very powerful High Priestess, so please be respectful."
The young human or Trevor seemed to get himself in check. "I apologise High Priestess. Forgive my bad temper, it's just I've been getting jobs that are below me recently and I can only take so much."
Intrigued, Michael felt there was potentially an opportunity. "There's no need to stand on airs and graces with me… Trevor was it? With all my powers and gifts I can tell you are upset and have good cause to be. Maybe I can help."
Stanley seemed to step into the conversation. It was obvious to Michael that the older slave was trying to look out for the younger one. Michael raised his hand to both, "I'm tired and I've plenty of hours to kill. Maybe as a human that has walked this world for a long time and has a long standing relationship with vampires, I could offer you some advice. Tell me your problem."
Michael could tell there seemed to be some sort of silent conversation taking place between the two slaves. Fortunately, the impulsiveness and inexperience of the younger human won through. "It's just I'm the lead pleasure slave and I live to serve my master and especially the Grand Master. Emmm… It's just recently I've had to babysit a young and less deserving slave, who Grand Master Viktor has taken a shine too. In fact, I've been ordered to go up and look after him. Apparently he's tripped and hurt himself."
Inwardly Michael did a somersault. It was exactly what he needed to hear. Not only did he identify a way in, but he also had an opportunity, especially as Viktor was going to be locked into negotiations for hours. "That seems so unfair. I can tell from looking at you, that you're strong and…. Just perfect. In fact, if I had a choice I would definitely choose you. I mean… look at your body?" Michael wasn't lying as he took in the young slave's body. He was strong and from analysing closer he could tell that the vessel would hold him for the time he would need. Looking him up and down, the archangel turned towards Stanley and added, "I'm feeling a little tired, maybe a strong man like young Mr Trevor here could help me rest up. Maybe show me to a quiet room, so I can rest up for a few hours uninterrupted."
Turning towards Trevor, he continued. "After all, it would get you out of babysitting duty for a few more minutes. Besides I can't imagine that Grand Master Viktor would be too annoyed at any delay in treating his pet." The suggestions landed well as he could see Trevor smirk at the thought of Dean spending a little longer waiting for help. A reluctant Trevor looked between the witch and the Head Slave before agreeing.
Progress was slow as Michael managed to manoeuvre his weakening vessel towards a more private area. The warding was taking its' toll on his power but he believed his discomfort was a small price to pay for getting much closer to his sword. Talking about price tags, he gazed upon the young slave and tried to identify what was the best angle of approach in his pitch. Astra's memory had little to no information on the slave, so he had to go in blind. With a clear plan of approach, he took a deep breath and then moved in.
"You know, don't let my current situation confuse you. I'm a very powerful creature and I can see that you're a very talented and important young man, but I believe you've been treated badly… No.. No.. No.. you don't need to argue with me, I can tell you've been treated badly. You're in love with you Grand Master. You give him everything and have been giving him all of yourself for years… Annnddd then along comes a jumped up little shit.. and before you say it, I know all about the overrated Mr Winchester."
Michael knew it was a risk, but he could tell from the young man's body language that it was paying off. So he continued. "This hunter comes along and distracts Viktor from everything that's important in his life. From his Clan to his favourite slave. I know you're his favourite slave as he told me this when he asked me to cast the spell. But you are not aware of everything, because he told me a secret." Michael knew that his last comments had Trevor intrigued.
"Wha.. what do you mean, secret?"
"Do you think I am just here by accident. Grand Master Viktor asked me to come here and to specifically find you. He wanted me to get in touch because he wants to be with you, but he had to form some sort of bond with the human in order to secure his position as Alpha of the vampires. But he knew that it would hurt you, so he asked me to come up with a solution. A way that he can be together with you, without affecting his bond that he has had to make with Winchester… and Trevor… I did find a solution. That's why I'm here."
Michael could tell that he had the young man hooked. Between naivety and being so far gone on his master, Trevor didn't spend time analysing the proposition in any real detail. Instead, he jumped at the chance to find out more.
"Well, it's really simple, but I need you to do something first." Immediately, Michael found a piece of paper and a pencil and began to write down the locations of a number of sigils that he needed removed. Michael knew he needed an excuse. The simplest explanation is always the best. "We need to remove these sigils as these are the ones that were used as part of my magic that I used for the bonding. If they're taken down, then the bonding won't stick and Viktor will be able to be with you. Do you think you can take these down quietly and quickly?"
Michael knew he had ensnared the young man by how quick he nodded and moved towards the door, but he needed to reel him in. Turning quickly, Trevor asked, "If I do this, how can you make this work?"
"Once the markings are removed, I need you to agree for me to use my magic on you. I'll just need a little yes from you and it'll all be simple. I'll be able to help you using the same magic that was used on the hunter." Michael watched Trevor visibly relax at the mention of having the same magic used on him. "What will you do with Winchester? I mean, Grand Master seemed to really like him."
'Now to close the net'. "Of course, he's had to act like Winchester is important. He needs the hunter to cement his position, but that doesn't mean that the hunter's the one Viktor wants. Noooooo, he has told me all about you Trevor, and he's asked me to help you. By using my magic on you, you'll be able to be with him as equals. You'd like that wouldn't you? … All that you'll have to do is say yes to my power entering you and that power will create such a bond that will bring you even closer to your master and even better, it will get you one step closer to severing your Master's bond with Winchester and we all know you want that. Don't you?"
With those words, Trevor nodded and left the room quickly to locate and destroy the sigils. Technically Michael hadn't been lying. By saying yes, Trevor would indeed create a bond that would help sever the link between Volkov and Dean, it just wouldn't happen the way the young slave thought it would. At that thought, Michael couldn't help smiling. He was still smiling when he felt the warding begin to break down and by the time the slave re-entered the room, the archangel was working at half strength. It wasn't enough, but it would do for what he needed to do.
"Well done child. That has worked well. My powers are much stronger. Now come over here as we don't have much time." Michael watched as Trevor practically skipped his way across the room and stood to attention opposite the archangel. In the vessel, Michael found himself having to extend Astra's neck to look up and upon the young man's face. "I see you're eager and ready to go.. just all that's needed is a minor formality of an official yes… sooo Trevor, are you happy for my essence, my magical grace to enter you and help form a bond who's mission it is, is to destroy the bond between Dean Winchester and Viktor Volkov?"
At first, Michael was met by silence. Worry crept in as he feared the boy had worked out the deception just by the very mention of the word 'grace'. Chancing his luck, the archangel raised his head and watched as Trevor stood shaking. Michael's initial impression was that the shaking was due to fear, but then as he watched a huge grin spread across the slave's face, he realised, the shaking was due to sheer excitement. 'Perfect… like a lamb to the slaughter'.
"Yes…. the answer is yes. I am prepared to do anything that will bring me closer to my Master." With the affirmation, the young man stepped even closer. It seemed Trevor thought proximity would make a difference. So it was with some shock to him, when he saw a huge bright ball of light come rushing out of the High Priestess, rise up at least seven feet into the air and perform a loop, before making its way at high speed down and directly into the mouth of the new temporary vessel.
The transfer happened so quickly to ensure that no alarms were tripped due to the colossal amount of energy that made itself known as he transferred from Astra's body into Trevor's. The effect was immediate as he found a weak and willing mind welcoming him. It was such a difference from the hostile environment he had just vacated when he left the witch. Thankfully vacating the woman had led to her collapsing unconscious on the floor. Having some time to acclimatise to his new surroundings enabled Michael with the opportunity to dispose of the body.
It took 3 seconds of deliberation before the archangel made the decision to kill Astra. As he snapped her neck with his bare hands he was filled with regret. Regret that he wasn't able to inflict much worse torture and death as punishment for her crimes. He smirked as he knew that internal damnation in hell would have to be her punishment. As he lifted her lifeless body, he carried it over and dumped the corpse into a large cupboard, taking little to no care to ensure that the body fitted. A few bangs and broken bones later, he was able to close the door before turning to leave and make his way towards his prize.
With such an innocent and simple mind, it didn't take Michael long to subdue the human and place him in an alternative reality, one where he had succeeded and was living the high life with his beloved Grand Master. Chancing a sneak peek, the archangel could tell that the human was totally fooled by his new world and would happily live out the scene for quite some time. It would give Michael enough time to sap whatever energy the young human's soul had.
Leaving that section of the human's mind, Michael took a little time to plunder through the rest of Trevor's mind. He found very little diversity, given that the young man had spent most of his life serving the vampires. In many ways the lack of experience made things incredibly simple for the archangel as it took little to no time at all to gain an expert knowledge of everything of importance within the mansion. From security codes to unmarked short cuts and hidden passage ways. There was very little that Trevor didn't know about the building or about the vampires that lived there.
Michael had first-hand knowledge of every passage way and route to and from all the key chambers in the house. He also had excellent intelligence on all the security positions as well as the internal gossip. It didn't take the archangel long to work out the politics within the Clans and in particular, the politics between the three main Volkov vampires – Bridget, Valentin and most importantly, Viktor.
Turning his attention towards memories of Dean, Michael was able to access every piece of information there was to be had about the elder Winchester and what he found was surprising. Until that very moment, Michael had failed to fully comprehend the obsession Viktor had for Dean until he saw Trevor's memories. As he analysed the latest images of Dean he could tell that the hunter was breaking.
With that thought, Viktor came out of his new vessels mind and began to make his way back towards the kitchen. On entering the Head Slave, Stanley barked a reminder to him … something about making sure he completed Grand Master's orders and checked in on Winchester. On hearing Dean's name, Michael replied, "Certainly Sir. I'm just gathering everything I need so I can deal with Dean now." As he spoke, he lifted medical supplies as well as some water and bread. With his hands full, he turned and nodded before he left.
Despite the ongoing irritation from the warding, Michael was able to make his way undeterred and undetected towards his target. No one was going to stop the head pleasure slave, especially when it was said slave's duty to tend to the Grand Master's new toy.
As he reached Viktor's quarters, two armed guards stood outside to attention. Remembering the proper etiquette, Michael lowered his head and hunched his shoulders a little more and approached the entrance. "Forgive me, but Grand Master wishes me to attend to his toy's injuries. May I pass please?"
Internally hating that he had to beg, Michael played the part of a subservient slave as he needed to remain under the radar. Both vampire guards looked at him and one of them smirked before replying. "Yeah, go ahead my little bike… from what I heard from the screaming earlier, you're going to be busy putting his toy back together again. …. Screamed like a bitch, didn't he?"
For a millisecond Michael entertained the idea of snapping his fingers and smiting both vampires where they stood but stopped himself as he reminded himself of his mission. Shaking himself internally, he refocused on the task and just nodded as the other vampire unlocked the door and allowed him access to the inner sanctum.
On entering the room, Michael was met with a scent of blood, sweat, tears and sex. Chancing it, he briefly extended his grace and took in the entire quarters and was able to gleam so much information as to what had happened in each and every room over the past 24 to 48 hours. He could imagine the scenes as he took in the memory echoes of each room. At one stage he could practically hear the screams and moans from his sword.
"Enough! You're here to do a job. Get on with it." Whispering to himself, Michael wasn't sure whether he was giving himself orders or a pep talk, either way he obeyed and walked towards the back of the quarters as he tried to locate Winchester.
Panic hit him when he couldn't sense Dean. His first thought was to rip the entire mansion apart but common sense prevailed as he realised there was a section of the quarters he couldn't get past. As he approached a door hidden at the back of the suite, he realised there was additional warding, but it wasn't until he was six foot away that he realised the warding had two purposes – the first, to block any magic from seeing into the room and the second, to keep angels, and in this case, archangels out of the room.
Snarling at the latest obstacle, Michael turned and looked around the room for anything he could use to weaken or destroy the last line of defence between himself and his human. When he couldn't find anything, his next thought was to blast the door with everything he had. He immediately rejected that idea as it would most certainly alert the entire house to his presence and he wasn't ready to give up.
Glaring at the door, he could imagine that just feet away from him, lay Dean. Looking around he decided, that perhaps his slave could play a role, but it would mean making a big gamble. Without further thought, he re-entered Trevor's mind and took the form of Viktor.
Instantly he fell to the ground and faked an episode. Trevor immediately bent over and tried to comfort the vampire. After over the top acting, Michael, wearing the face of Viktor said, "Trevor, my child, my treasure. Someone is trying to kill me."
His very words angered the human. "Who? .. I mean, what can I do to save you?"
Ceasing his chance, he replied, "Someone has used witchcraft to try and contain me. Look to those markings on the wall. Do you see them?" Pointing towards where the markings would be, Michael continued his subterfuge. "Yes. Over there. In a few seconds, I want you to go over and subtly scratch the one furtherest into the corner. If you do that, there'll be bright light but that'll be all it is."
As Trevor acknowledge and agreed with the plan, Michael took no time to quickly leave the vessel and he took the form of Viktor once again. It was clear that the slave was slightly disorientated but when he saw his master, he acted as the dutiful slave and destroyed one of the sigils. Immediately, Michael knew the moment he had access to the room and within one second he re-entered Trevor's body and the child returned to his makeshift world.
As he wondered towards the door, Michael staggered. In addition to all the warding that was still in place, the archangel was greatly weakened by the abuse of entering and leaving vessels. He had made three short body jumps in less than an hour and it was taking its toll, but as he got to the door, he was able to remove the lock and slowly open the door.
