Okay, now that I got the rewrite for the last chapter out of the way, it's time to continue. Like the Riddler two-parter, this one will have the antagonist from the previous chapter, this time Porter Rothchild. However, he's only the secondary antagonist, with his boss being the main one. Like Doctor Polaris, Condiment King, and Gizmo, he's a villain I haven't used yet. Also, for the first time, DeMarcus will be a focus character along with Logan.
Dethroning the Kingpin!
In Gotham City, the people were hustling to their destinations. Naturally, they were on the lookout on account of the crime rate, which was still fairly high. The buildings were very tall, which made it difficult to get a bird's eye view unless you were in a plane. Coming out of a zeta tube in an alley, Logan had his hood up as he blended into the crowd. This way, he would make sure to sneak up on Rothchild and bring him to justice. This had him thinking of a conversation he, Cammy, and Kiryo had before he left.
(Flashback…)
Logan was packing his stuff in a backpack, which included a few clothes, when Kiryo and Cammy came in. He knew what the former was asking, as he let out a sigh. "I'll be in Gotham for a little while," he said. "I need to bring somebody to justice."
"Can't we come along?" asked Kiryo. "Gotham's very dangerous, you know."
"I know, but I'll be fine. I need you two to watch over St. Louis while I'm gone. Besides, Shannon and Commissioner Gordon are there, not to mention the Bat family."
"We'll miss you while you're gone," said Cammy.
"I'll miss you guys too. If push comes to shove and the Bat family, even Batman and Nightwing, aren't enough, I'll call in Jakar."
"That's the reassurance we need. Good luck, Logan." Cammy and Logan then shared a long kiss. "And stay safe."
"I will, Baby Doll." They then shared one more kiss.
(Present Day…)
Logan approached a small diner that had a 50s theme to it. He entered and took notice of the quiet theme. He went in, sat down, and ordered a cup of hot chocolate as he looked at a photo of his old college group from back when Cathy was still alive. "Here you go, hun," said the waitress who brought him his hot chocolate. "You know, we don't get many people from outside of Gotham here. What brings you around these parts?"
"I'm meeting someone here," Logan said. "She said that this was a good place."
"Alright then, when your friend gets here, I'll get your food orders."
"Sounds like a plan." Just then, the door opened and Shannon came in wearing her satchel, putting a smile on Logan's face. She sat down across from her lover and they placed their orders. "It's good to see your beautiful face again, Shannon," he said, making her blush. "Did you get the info?"
"It's right here," she said, pulling out a file. "Damian and I went through hell trying to get this, but we found out a lot about him. It says here that Porter Rothchild poses as a butler to a rich family to get the intel on both the family and the environment they're in. However, his real boss' name is Roman Sionis, the owner of the Sionis Industries steel mill."
"Better known as Black Mask."
"Bingo. He's Gotham's biggest crime lord. If he falls, there will be a large power vacuum that the Joker, Penguin, and Two-Face will be fighting each other for. Before he's arrested, we need to ensure that they're behind bars where they belong."
"Simple to explain, but extremely difficult to pull off. All four of them have something that makes them dangerous. Two-Face's silver dollar always has a chance of landing fried side up and he's got his tommy gun ready in case it does. Penguin's got trick umbrellas in his arsenal, as you well know. Black Mask has men that are undercover all over Gotham. As for Joker, well…"
"His unpredictability is off the charts. You've faced him before as well, with Harley Quinn at your side to boot."
"Not just her," Logan said. "Superboy and Bluebird too. Anyway, from what I'm sensing, old Harv's still behind bars at Arkham, but Joker's loose in the city. We'll leave him to Batman."
"That's a good idea," said Shannon. "As for my 'friend' Cobblepot, he's running the Iceberg Lounge. We'll have Gotham PD get him."
"That means in addition to getting Rothchild, Sionis, and Penguin back in Blackgate, we'll need to keep Two-Face and Riddler from escaping from the asylum. Sounds like a job for Red Robin."
"Considering Nightwing is in Bludhaven right now and Red Hood is known for his overkill methods, I'm inclined to agree. So, if you want, I can prep up a spare room for you at my place."
"Actually, Shannon, I made a reservation for two at one of Mr. Wayne's hotels." This put a flirtatious smile on Shannon's face. After finishing their meal, they checked into the hotel and began making out as they entered their room. It was a nice setup, with a queen-sized bed, a kitchenette, and the usual bathroom set. They even had a desk for Logan and Shannon's laptops. The curtains were closed, but they had no reason to open them. Logan helped Shannon out of her button-up shirt as they made out, with her helping him out of his jacket. They broke apart for air and to remove their shirts, revealing that Shannon's breasts weren't in a bra. They resumed kissing before Logan kissed down her jaw, then her neck, and finally her breasts. At least they were going to get a good rest for both of them.
Meanwhile, in a suburban area, DeMarcus had an office set up in his home. When he told his parents what he wanted to do, they felt they couldn't be prouder of him, especially his father, who was an officer in the GCPD. DeMarcus was always close to his parents, so it came as no surprise that they supported him in his decision, as well as his planned move to Metropolis to work with both Dan Turpin and Superman. Until then, he had a home office that he shared with his father, Isaiah. It was a simple room with two desks, neatly sorted filing cabinets, computers, and the necessary supplies that they need.
DeMarcus was typing away on his computer, detailing his recent cases that he helped his father on. For the moment, he was a private investigator separate from a police department, but always willing to bring in more evidence to knock the criminal down. He took notice of something, so knowing his parents were out of the house, he spoke up. "Good thing I already knew where Damian got his habit of showing up out of nowhere from," he said.
"So, what he said was true," said Batman, who stepped out of the shadow in the corner. "You are training to be a detective."
"Afraid so. I hate being sidelined, Bats, especially while Shannon and Damian get most of the action in Gotham. Plus, I feel like I can make a difference. I want to contribute to the elimination of most of the criminal element in Gotham before I go to Metropolis. I want the people to know that they can count on me, you know?"
"Trust me, I know. I'm glad you feel this way, DeMarcus. An associate of mine from St. Louis is here. You know who he is, but I feel like you should meet him yourself. Go down to the GCPD building with your father. He'll be there to meet with Gordon on a case he's working on. You two have a common friend in Shannon Youngblood, so that should be good enough for you two to work together." After that, Batman left, leaving DeMarcus to his thoughts.
"Well…It looks like I finally get to meet Logan Washburn…"
Back at the hotel, Logan and Shannon had gotten done with a few rounds of love-making. Shannon had her head on Logan's shoulder and her arm on his chest while he had his arm on her back. "That was fun," she said with a smile on her face. "I can't wait for the next round."
"Neither can I," he said. "However, we still have a case to work on. We need a game plan."
"I was thinking. Maybe it's time you met with Commissioner Gordon. If Batman hasn't gone over that with you, I feel like he'll be a valuable asset to this mission. Detective Bullock, not so much."
"That's not a bad idea. Gordon might know something about Sionis that we don't, even his location. Hell, even some possibilities will narrow it down."
"Then it's settled. You'll go down to the GCPD and meet with the Commish and see what info you can get from him."
"What about you?"
"Well, there are two things that are keeping me from going there right now. First off, there's Violet. She won't be happy to see me. Second, there's Detective Renee Montoya."
"Nightwing told me about her. She's, um, very close to Batwoman."
"Yeah. Anyway…" Shannon said as she got back on top of Logan. "I'm ready for another one." She then kissed him as they got another round going.
The next day, Logan walked to the GCPD building. He saw how tall it was, which made sense considering the criminals and the officers that were there. Knowing that Gordon's office was on the bottom level, he went there using the civilian entrance to the garage. He made it to the entrance but was stopped by a couple of the officers. "Easy, guys," he said. "I have to meet with the Commissioner."
"Yeah, right," said the officer on the right. "I'm not letting you get to him. I know you're the Assassin we've been hearing about."
"Don't tell me you fall for the bullshit that comes out of Godfrey's mouth. I only kill when I'm left with no other choice."
"Tell that to the judge."
"Let him go, guys," said an exasperated voice. They turned around and saw an annoyed Renee Montoya. "He's cool."
"But…"
"No buts! Or am I going to have to report you to the Commissioner?" Afraid, the two officers lowered their guns as Montoya led Logan into the building. "Sorry about those two. They listen to too much Godfrey."
"I was afraid of that," Logan said, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Gordon's going to have a field day with those two."
"He usually does. By the way, Mr. Washburn, I'm Detective Renee Montoya."
"I know. Nightwing told me about you."
"Really? I'd have expected Batwoman to. As it happens, I know about you too. I'm a fan. Just not that way. The Commissioner is in a session with one of our inmates that was brought here by Shannon Youngblood. She felt it would be safer for her to be here than at Arkham or Blackgate."
"Shannon has a good heart on her." Logan then spotted a man with grey hair, a white shirt, brown pants, and overall straps in a cell with a certain goth girl. "Is that him there?"
"Yep. That's Commissioner Gordon," said Renee. "The girl he's talking to is Violet Powers, the one that Shannon brought in. He's been trying to help her regain her sanity and become a good member of society, but if he's had any luck at all, it's a small amount."
"…I've told you before, Violet. I'm not your enemy," said Gordon. "You know this. I only want to help you. However, I need you to cooperate with me." Violet merely turned away without saying a word.
"Hey, uh, Commish," said Bullock, who took notice of Logan. "Look who Montoya brought in. For once, it's not another girl."
"We'll continue this some other time, Violet."
"Whatever," said the inmate as Gordon left the cell.
"Logan Washburn, I presume."
"That's me," Logan said. "You must be Commissioner Gordon."
"That's right. So, what do you need?"
"I need info on Black Mask, especially any possible locations he might be at." This perked up Violet's ears. Gordon had a look around before guiding Logan to his office. "Sorry if this seems like trouble."
"It's no problem. I'm just glad someone's here with the courage to knock him down a few pegs. With Batman and the other Justice Leaguers busy dealing with Lex Luthor, we've been without a possibility of arresting Sionis for some time. Unfortunately, he's bought several members of the police department, so he's not going to be easy to get to."
"One thing I know about him is that he has several decoys subbing in for him in different places. If I could pinpoint the real Sionis, then I can take him and his lackey, Porter Rothchild, to Blackgate."
"It sounds like you know what you're doing, but I'm afraid it's easier said than done. I know how close you and Shannon are, so I know she told you about him. However, there is one thing that she didn't tell you about Sionis. During one of his operations that was foiled by Batman and Robin, Robin jammed Black Mask's handgun and caused it to explode, which melted his mask to his face. That means that we can't get it off."
"So, his mask is his face now?" Logan asked, getting a nod from Gordon. "Good. That means his mask has a moving mouth."
"As for possible locations, I've digitized a map of Gotham and highlighted several of Black Mask's hideouts for you," said Gordon. "You should be able to narrow it down from there."
"Thanks, Commissioner. You know I'm going after Black Mask to set Gotham free from his grasp."
"But why go after Porter Rothchild?"
"He murdered an old friend of mine and got away from me and my ex-girlfriend. He'll be sent to Blackgate with his boss."
"Good to know you don't exactly ooze revenge." They heard a knock at the door and saw a couple of silhouettes in the window. "Come in," Gordon said, allowing an African American officer with black hair. Behind him was DeMarcus, who added a trenchcoat and a fedora to his clothing, much to Logan's shock. He then saw DeMarcus' face and breathed a sigh of relief, which didn't go unnoticed by him or Gordon. "How are you, Isaiah?"
"I'm fine, Commissioner," said the cop. "I brought my son DeMarcus with me. Apparently, Batman wanted him to come here to help out on a case."
"Normally, that wouldn't be a bad idea, but I have yet to see him in action."
"And even if we did, I'm afraid the case I'm working on is too dangerous," Logan added.
"What kind of case are you working on?" DeMarcus asked.
"I can't tell you."
"C'mon. Tell me."
"No, it's too dangerous."
"It's a crime lord, isn't it?" This stopped Logan in his tracks and caused him to turn toward DeMarcus. "If it's Penguin, I can nab him myself. If it's Two-Face, you and I can work together."
"It's neither, but he's just as dangerous."
"Who?"
"…Black Mask."
"W…What?"
"You heard me. Roman Sionis, A.K.A. Black Mask."
"…You have no idea how much I wanted to take him down," DeMarcus said, the two of them not knowing that they were near Violet again. "Do you know how many cops he's bought out? How many operations he's ran in Gotham? He needs to be put in the slammer."
"He will be…" Logan said. "At Blackgate. Same with a lackey of his that killed one of my old friends back in St. Louis three years ago."
"Let's work together, man. You and me. If we put our heads together, we'll have Sionis behind bars in no time."
"Hooray for teamwork," said a sarcastic Violet, getting Logan and DeMarcus' attention. "Look, if you want to get to Black Mask, the easiest way to do so is by sabotaging one of his operations." The two guys looked at her as if she grew an extra head. "What?"
"I thought you were the girl who wanted the slums to stay the way they were," Logan said.
"I do. But I'm stuck in here and Gordon wanted me to cooperate. Besides, being one of Black Mask's goons is not my forte. I enjoy being my own woman. It allows me to do whatever I want."
"Providing it's legal," said DeMarcus.
"Thanks for the tip, Violet," Logan said as they walked away. "Detective Montoya, do you think you can take some cops and put them around the Iceberg Lounge?"
"Sure thing," said the female detective. "I'll need the okay from the Commissioner, though."
"Go ahead and ask him. He'll figure out why in an instant." Montoya nodded as the vigilante and the detective exited outside of the building. Logan then pushed a button on his gauntlet and got Batman on the screen. "Just the Caped Crusader I was looking for."
"I see you've met DeMarcus," said the Dark Knight. "What's your status?"
"I met with Gordon at Shannon's recommendation. He couldn't be happier that Black Mask was finally going down. DeMarcus and I are on our way to ruin one of his operations, but do you think you can do something for me?"
"Name it."
"Well, it's actually two things. Do you think you can send Red Robin to Arkham to keep Two-Face and Riddler from getting out? I also need you and either Robin, Batgirl, or Nightwing to take Joker back as well if you don't mind."
"That sounds like a plan. By the way, Bluebird's almost finished with that virus program for the robots."
"Sounds good. The sooner we stop Luthor, the sooner we can focus on taking Shadaloo down." With that, Logan and Batman hung up. He then got his phone out to call Shannon.
"Hey, Love," she greeted. "What's your status?"
"I met with Detectives Montoya and Bullock, as well as Commissioner Gordon and Officer Gibson. If Gordon's willing, Penguin's going to make a trip back to Blackgate. Batman's also going with either Batgirl, Robin, or Nightwing to bring Joker back to the Asylum, where Red Robin will be at to keep Riddler and Two-Face, among others, from escaping."
"That's great."
"In the meantime, you friend DeMarcus and I are on our way to sabotage one of Black Mask's operations."
"Wait, DeMarcus is with you?"
"Yep." They opened the door and saw a bunch of Black Mask's men holding knives, shock sticks, and bats. "I'll have to call you back," Logan said before hanging up. "So, you guys going to batting practice?"
"Yeah," said one of the thugs. "And your heads are the balls!" He tried attacking Logan, but the Assassin threw down a smoke bomb, giving him and DeMarcus some cover. The new detective showcased his fighting skills by grabbing one thug by the collar, kneeing him in the gut, grabbing another one by the head, and crashing their heads together before elbowing and clocking two more that were coming up behind him. Logan, in the meantime, grabbed a long pipe and used it for a bo staff, knocking several of the men out. Charging it up and spinning it, he gave DeMarcus the signal to move out of the way. The Assassin pole vaulted upward and slammed the charged pipe down, sending enough volts of electricity through the bodies of the thugs that it knocked them out.
As Logan looked around at the damage caused, the thug that initially attacked him tried to do so again from behind, but DeMarcus knocked him out, getting a smirk from the more experienced vigilante. "We'll tell your coach that you aren't cut out for the team," said the detective.
"Good one," Logan said, praising the quip.
"I'll say," said a female voice. They looked up and saw a red-headed woman in a black batsuit. The area around her mouth was shown, revealing pale skin and red lipstick. Her bat symbol, utility belt, gloves, and boots were red, as was the inside of her cape. Robin and Signal were with her. "Now that's a way to kick ass."
"You must be Batwoman."
"In the suit. Logan Washburn, right? Detective Montoya told me about you."
"Odd, considering we just met."
"Apparently, she likes you. I can see why."
"And Nightwing's pretty fond of you." Logan then turned his attention to the two younger vigilantes. "How's it going, Robin? Is this Signal?"
"Yep," said the Boy Wonder. "And I'm fine. Let's discuss more in a safer place." The others nodded as he grabbed DeMarcus. Batwoman grabbed Logan and got out a grapnel gun.
They got to the rooftops away from the GCPD, specifically at Wayne Tower. Logan and DeMarcus took notice of the office. They knew Bruce would never allow his headquarters to be bugged, so they were safe. "Wayne Tower?" DeMarcus asked. "Are you sure about this, Robin? Bruce Wayne's secretary could hear us."
"First of all, the only one behind that door is Lucius Fox. The secretary has the rest of the night off. And second, everyone in this room knows our identities except you two don't know Batwoman's." At this cue, Batwoman took off her cowl and revealed the rest of her face, which showed that she's been through a lot.
"My name's Kate Kane," she said. "As you may have figured out from Nightwing, he and I went to school together, back when he was Robin."
"Am I right in guessing that he was who Batman recruited to help get Joker back in Arkham?" Logan asked.
"Yep. Honestly, I know this may sound weird, but he's my favorite partner to work with, even more so than Renee."
"Probably because you two knew each other before you even met Mr. Wayne."
"Yeah, I believe that's it. Anyway, you two are looking to foil one of Black Mask's operations?"
"Yep," DeMarcus answered. "We need to get to the docks. Maybe we can…" He then saw that Batwoman took notice of something: a red dot on Logan's head. Putting her cowl back on, she tackled the Assassin to the ground as a bullet headed for him, making the shooter miss. "What was that!?" Batwoman got off of Logan, so he could have a good look. Using his 'Spirit Sense', he figured out who shot the bullet.
"Damn," he said. "Porter Rothchild. He's the other reason I'm here. And he just made this mission easier." Logan aimed an arm at the building that Rothchild was on before firing his Hidden Chain Blade. Hitting the 'retract' button, he zipped across to the building, taking the man by surprise by kicking him. "You're getting sloppy, Rothchild."
"Pardon me if I'm no Deathstroke," said the false butler. "What are you even doing here? Gotham's dangerous, even for you."
"I'm well aware. However, I'm here to take you down."
"Vengeance? How very droll, especially since it happened three years ago."
"Justice, not vengeance." Both fighters took their stances as the others watched, worried for their friend. Rothchild made the first move, throwing a punch toward the Assassin. Logan parried it, caught his arm, and used his knee to hit Rothchild in the stomach twice before kicking him away. Logan went on the offensive this time, going for a punch of his own. Rothchild grabbed it and shifted Logan's weight against him, throwing him over his shoulder. The Assassin quickly got up, spun on his hand, and tripped the henchman, causing him to fall down. Logan put his foot on Rothchild's chest to keep him from getting up.
The latter tried to grab his ankle, but Logan kicked his 'Chidori' in, giving the false butler a shock. "Nice try, Porter," he said. Rothchild only responded by wrapping his ankles around the younger's neck to throw him off. "Okay, he's agile. I forgot that he was able to keep up with me and Pearl at the same time."
"There is nothing you can do to defeat me by yourself," said the henchman. "Your best bet lies with Batwoman, but we both know you'll try an alternative. You're way too proud, but predictable. You can't win by yourself." It was then that Logan thought of an idea. To Rothchild's confusion, he built up his energy.
"You think you've got me pegged, don't you?" Logan then crossed his arms before flexing his muscles and letting out a mighty shout. "Chidori Flare!" he exclaimed. A bright light emanated from him, which blinded Rothchild. Luckily, Signal, Robin, and Batwoman had light shields in their masks while DeMarcus wore his sunglasses. While Rothchild was still blinded, Logan used physical attacks along with his 'Flash Step' to deal quite a bit of damage. Logan finished the barrage by kicking his opponent toward the edge of the building they were on. "Now, tell me where I can find Black Mask!" the Assassin exclaimed, his foot on Rothchild's chest.
"Why?" asked the false butler. "We both know you won't kill me, especially…Especially here in Gotham. You'll just send me to…Blackgate…"
"True, but if you don't tell me, I'll arrange for you to share a cell in Arkham with Killer Croc. Now talk!"
"Alright. Black Mask's current location is in the heart of Gotham. It's where he runs his operations. However, I do not know which building he is in."
"I'll find it myself." Logan then knocked Rothchild out, put a chain on him, and left him for the police before rejoining DeMarcus, Robin, Batwoman, and Signal. "That happened sooner than I thought."
"At least you got him out of the way," DeMarcus said.
"He told us what happened," said Batwoman. "So that asshole killed your friend? Damn."
"Yep. Now we've got to get Black Mask," Logan said. "Rothchild said he was in the heart of the city, but he doesn't know which building."
"Then we should head to the docks," said Robin. "The sooner we catch Sionis, the sooner your mission will be complete."
"I know, but since I haven't come across him before, I can't sense him. That means we'll have to do this the old-fashioned way. Have any of you guys faced him before?"
"Just me." This got Logan to pinch the bridge of his nose before the communicator rang. "Father?"
"If I may make a suggestion," said Batman. "How about you help Logan at the docks? Afterward, he'll go after Black Mask himself."
"Father, you know Black Mask is dangerous. How can he handle him?"
"I have an idea, Bats," Logan said. "If I can't find the Red Hood, I'll trade you Robin for Nightwing. I'll be damned if I get Shannon involved in this one."
"No deal. Joker's just as dangerous, which is why I need Nightwing."
"I hate to say it, but he's right," Robin said.
"Then I'll go after him myself."
"Well, what are we supposed to do?" asked DeMarcus. "I was under the impression that we'd be taking Black Mask down as a team."
"We're ruining his operations as a team. However, the GCPD is going to need help putting the cuffs on Penguin. I won't be alone, though; I'm always in touch with Shannon."
"That's right," said Signal. "She's your eyes and ears, isn't she?"
"That's good," Batwoman said. "Still, if you need the extra firepower…"
"Some other time," Logan said. "Let's get to the docks." They nodded before going to their destination.
The group got to Gotham Harbor, viewing an operation going on between Black Mask's men and a weapons dealer working for Penguin. They could see them conducting business while guards stood outside of the building and kept watch. Logan got out a Disruptor that he borrowed from Batman to sabotage the caches. Since there were four of them, they couldn't disrupt the guns themselves. He then fired a tracking device on the car that Black Mask's men came in. "Okay, it's all set up," Logan said, getting ready to head down before Batwoman stopped him.
"Save your energy," she said. "Robin, Signal, and I will take on the Black Mask goons. DeMarcus, see if you can knock out the weapons dealer."
"Got it," said the new detective.
"Hold on, you guys," said the Assassin. "Snipers at twelve, four, and eight." They looked and saw what he was talking about, seeing three snipers forming a triangle and aiming for any unwelcome guests. "Leave them to me."
"Good idea." Logan 'Flash Stepped' to the spot with the highest sniper and knocked him out quietly. He did the same with the second one and prepared to knock out the third one, only to see that Sharel had come to town and pulled off the same thing. "Who's that?" DeMarcus asked.
"Huh?" asked one of the Black Mask goons, who noticed that the snipers were knocked out. He spotted Logan and Sharel. "We've got company!" This caused Sharel to warp over to Logan and get him away from there, giving the three Bat Family members the signal to attack the goons. In the commotion, some of the henchmen drove away, unaware of the tracer on their car.
"Batwoman, we're in pursuit of the crooks in the getaway car," Logan said on the communicator.
"Good. Ugh!" she said, fighting several of the goons. "Follow them and find out exactly where Sionis is at. It's up to you now."
"Roger that. C'mon, Sharel."
"Right!" said the interdimensional girl, who used her ring to pick Logan up. "Sorry for dropping in like this, but Nathaniel and Pearl let me know what was going on. We thought you could use the help."
"Much appreciated, but the only other one in your group I sense right now is Nate."
"We figured it'd be too dangerous here for anyone else, even Jakar."
"Good thinking. Looks like we're coming up on Nate."
"Hey, Logan!" Nate exclaimed. "Sorry, but I had no luck finding Rothchild."
"I already landed him in the slammer. Thanks for coming by, though." Logan saw that the car had stopped at the center building, so they got to a building that was a few blocks away. The Assassin got out a pair of binoculars to look into the top floor. Sure enough, he saw a man wearing a black pinstripe suit with a black skull mask burned onto his face. "That's Black Mask alright. I thought he was ugly in the picture."
"So, it's Black Mask you're after now?"
"Yep. We take him down and there will be a large power vacuum in Gotham's criminal underworld. As we speak, Batman and Nightwing are bringing the Joker back to Arkham while Renee Montoya has her men bringing Penguin in."
"That just leave Two-Face and Riddler," Sharel pointed out.
"Nope. Red Robin's keeping them from escaping the Asylum while the Joker's being brought in. Anyway, we need a two-pronged attack to get to Black Mask. However, we'll need a fourth person and Bluebird's putting the finishing touches on the virus program for Luthor's bots."
"Why do we need a fourth person?"
"I'll need you two to distract the guards on the outside of the building."
"Ah," said Nate. "Good thing we did bring a fourth person."
"Really? Who?" They then saw Cloak jump on top of the building. "Good thinking. Welcome to the party, Cloak."
"Thanks," said the Exonian. "So, what's the plan?"
"The Silver Lanterns are going to distract the guards on the outside while we sneak in to get to Sionis. We may have to knock out a few to get to his office."
"So, the silent approach? Sounds good. Anything else we need to know?"
"There's a signal jammer that prevents scanning devices from working. It's on one of the goons, so if we're going to get the schematics for the place, we need to knock him out and destroy it. There's also a communication jammer that'll prevent us from contacting Shannon and the others when we get in, so we'll have to destroy that too."
"Leave the electronics to me. I'll hack the security cameras, so he won't know we're inside."
"Good idea. Now that we have a game plan, we can get going." They nodded and began the attack, with the Silver Lanterns taking to the skies. Sneaking past the guards on the ground, Logan and Cloak removed a ventilation shaft, which fortunately for them, the latter disabled the laser grid to. They got to a large room with windows and saw that Nate had his shield up as they fired on them. Sharel, however, warped the bullets away and sent boxing glove constructs to knock out the ones on her end. Logan smirked at how well they were doing before spotting the goon with the signal jammer.
Signaling Cloak to keep an eye out for anyone who could spot him, he went after said goon. He hid behind a pillar, grabbed the goon, and performed a silent takedown, destroying the signal jammer in the process. He climbed back up the vents and rejoined Cloak, who was downloading the schematics onto their wrist communicators. "You didn't take long," Cloak said. "I hope you hid him."
"It'll take a while for them to find him," said the Assassin. "You did hack the cameras, right?"
"Naturally. As we speak, Black Mask is watching reruns." Logan smirked as they went back into the ventilation shaft.
"Good work getting the schematics. Now we just have to knock out the communications jammer and we'll be back in contact with the others."
"The problem's finding it without getting distracted by the communicators. With how smart Sionis is, he feels we'll be expecting something big. However, going by that logic, we need to look for something the size of a smoke alarm, not a bulky system. And since we're out of contact with Nate at this moment…"
"We'll have to find it ourselves. Hm?" Logan peered through a vent and saw something suspicious from across the room. He then looked and saw another one on the ceiling. Looking to the side, he made out the beacon of one more. "Hey, Cloak. Can you combine your Symbiote and Technopathy abilities?"
"And shut down the communication jammers? That could work." Cloak put his hand on the vent and had the symbiote seep through, having it go to the jammers. Once it was around all three jammers, he had them destroyed. He then quickly retracted the Symbiote before the goons noticed.
"What did you do?"
"I overloaded the circuits on the jammers."
"Shannon, do you read me?"
"Loud and clear, Logan," Shannon said. "Thanks for the schematics. Okay, it looks like you guys are almost there. Climb up the shaft some more and I'll let you know when you're on the same floor as Black Mask."
"You got it." They did as Shannon said, avoiding the guards with ease. After a while, she let them know that they got to the same level as Sionis. Once they heard that, they looked down the vents until they found his office.
"…Sir, the attack on the outside was analyzed and we found the Silver Lanterns responsible for it," said a henchman who was reporting to him. "We also believe that they were responsible for Rothchild's arrest."
"Rothchild was arrested?" Black Mask asked before the vent fell onto the informant.
"He did, but it wasn't by a Silver Lantern," said Logan, who landed on the henchman. "That was me that did that."
"What!?" Black Mask then pushed a button. "You idiots! The Assassin from St. Louis is here! And he has a friend with him!"
"No amount of backup will save you from a trip behind bars this time," said Cloak, who webbed the door shut and got his Symbiote swords.
"Your reign over Gotham's come to an end, Sionis," Logan added as he got ready to fight. "And it wasn't short enough. Angered, Black Mask grabbed a tommy gun from under his desk and fired at the two heroes, causing them to have to dodge. Nate and Sharel saw what was happening, so she warped them into the office. They put up a shield, which gave the two vigilantes enough cover to go on the offensive when he finally stopped. They saw their opening as he went to refill his gun, allowing Cloak to plug up the barrel and Logan to charge him, the latter knocking Black Mask out with one punch.
The door burst open and several of Sionis' men came in with their guns aimed at the four heroes. With a bored look on her face, Sharel put her hand in front of her and changed the guns to bats, much to their surprise. The goons ran out the door with the bats hot on their trail. "Neat trick, Sharel," Nate said, the other two men agreeing.
After a while, Rothchild, Sionis, and Penguin were put into Blackgate. The visiting heroes went back to the GCPD building to meet up with Shannon, Batwoman, DeMarcus, Robin, Signal, and Commissioner Gordon again. Logan introduced everyone to each other before Gordon had briefed them on the impact that they had. "Congratulations, everyone," Gordon said. "Thanks to your efforts and the coordination that Logan, Shannon, and Batman had displayed, the crime element has significantly dropped. All the major crime lords – Black Mask, Two-Face, Penguin, Joker, and the Riddler – are behind bars. I must commend all of you. Not everyone can go against a criminal as dangerous as Black Mask and live to tell the tale."
"Still, that doesn't mean that crime has stopped completely," DeMarcus said.
"I know, but what you've done today, no matter how massive or miniscule it was, should be enough to put you in good standing with Metropolis PD. I'll let Dan Turpin know what you've done, DeMarcus."
"Thank you."
"By the way, Robin, wasn't there one more crime lord?" Logan asked.
"Rupert Thorne, but he's in jail," said the Boy Wonder.
"Got it."
"Now, you all deserve some rest," said Gordon. "Have a safe trip home."
"Thanks, Commissioner."
"Thank you." With that, the heroes left the building, with Shannon taking a sad glance at Violet, who had her back turned toward them. Shannon felt a kind hand on her shoulder, so she looked and saw Logan giving her a reassuring smile.
They got outside, where Logan instantly caught a flash drive with his hand. He looked and saw Batman and Nightwing standing on the bridge above them, the latter having tossed it to him. The original Dynamic Duo gave them all a smile, telling them 'job well done'. "What's that?" Nate asked.
"Our edge on Luthor," Logan said. "The bastard's finally going down. I'll take this home and let you know when to send Ashtah over."
"Good idea. She'll know what to do with it."
After a while, Logan and Cloak finally got back to St. Louis. Cloak went back to his and Michelle's hideout while Logan walked to the manhole cover leading to the tunnel to his own hideout. He stopped in his tracks when he sensed an unfamiliar presence behind a tree. "I know you're there!" he exclaimed. "You can stop hiding!" From behind the tree stepped a beautiful blonde woman with blue eyes. She had on a black ushanka hat with a four-pointed star on it, a black Afghanka-style military jacket that ends in a miniskirt, thigh-high stockings, and fur boots.
"I apologize," she said, her Eastern European accent clear. "I had no idea your senses were so sharp."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Helen. I am here to invite you into a group dedicated to ridding the world of Shadaloo once and for all."
CHAPTER 54 END
I think by this point, we all know who Helen is. If you haven't played Street Fighter V, I won't spoil it for you. Anyway, that's the first time I had our original four OCs together on a mission in a long time, so I hope you enjoyed it. See you next time.
