Chapter 54: Face the Music
A puppet show of a Princess Moon marionette appeared and a songstrel started to sing.
Perfect Princess Moon, she's great in every way
Everything she says and does is absolutely right
Her hair is silky soft, her favorite colour's pink
She flosses every day and she never needs to sleep!
The perfect Princess Moon, she's nice in every way
Always in a sunny mood, even on the cloudy days
Her sugar-coated heart of gold will make everything fine
She plays with puppies and kisses kitty-cats
Eats her veggies and smells like lavender
Perfect Princess Moon, she's a fan of smiles
Perfect Princess Moon will be our Que-ee-e-e-e-een!
Queen Moon clapped in approval while Star and Serena looked completely unhappy.
"Ugghh! Mum! Worst. Song. Ever."Star groaned. "Do I have to have one of those written about me?"
"Yes, Star. It's a tradition as old as the kingdom itself."Queen Moon replied. "And it's your official introduction as future queen to the people of Mewni."
"If Star is the one becoming queen, why do I have to do this too?"Serena questioned.
"Serena, your the keeper of the ring."Queen Moon reminded. "It is tradition that you should be included in the song day too."
Serena huffed and looked away with her arms folded.
"That song didn't say anything about the real you."Star complained. "You could plug any name into that song, and it wouldn't make a lick of difference. How about...Buttercup! Sparkle! Snowflake! They all happen to love puppies and smell like lavender? Wow!"
"I don't have time for this, girls."Queen Moon admitted. "Preparations for your Song Day celebration are already underway, and the new official songstrel of Mewni is heading to Earth to write your song as we speak."
Star groaned. "Fine."
"And remember, girls, the people of Mewni like their Princess Songs light and fluffy."Queen Moon explained. "Can you handle that?"
"Yes, Mom."Star responded.
"Yes, auntie."Serena replied.
Star closed the mirror curtains.
"Oh, we can handle it by avoiding this problem until it goes away."Star stated with fake sarcasm.
"Star, for once, I think we need to stay and get this thing over with."Serena suggested. "The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can get this whole ordeal over with."
"Okay."Star responded in defeat.
The laser puppies barked at the girls and then there was a ring from the doorbell.
Star and Serena went upstairs to to find the songstrel at the door.
"Greetings, Princess Star and Princess Serena! I am Ruberiot."Ruberiot introduced and started playing a lute.
And may I just say
Though we have much to do
How much of a pleasure it is to meet both of you
I'll write you a—
Serena placed her hand up making Ruberiot stop singing.
"Ruberiot, we get it."Serena assured. "Come on in."
Ruberiot came in and sat down on the couch, where Marco was watching TV.
"So, this shouldn't take too long."Ruberiot complemented as he took out a pad and pencil. "I just want to get to know the real Star and Serena."
"Oh, how rude of me!"Star laughed. "I didn't even offer you anything. What can I get you? Water? Juice? Tea?"
"Ha."Ruberiot said. "Well, if you have mint tea, that might be—"
"As a matter of fact, we do!"Star stated. "Marco is a member of the Tea of the Month Club, and I think we just got some super-special mint tea. Right, Marco? Don't move!"
The blonde haired girl took Serena's wrist and they went to the kitchen.
"Tea of the Month Club?"Marco asked while flipping the TV channels.
Star goes into the kitchen and makes various tea-making noises: opening and closing cupboards, tossing teabags.
"What are you doing?"Serena questioned.
"Making it sound like I am making tea."Star replied.
Marco and Ruberiot sit motionless on the couch.
Ruberiot started strumming his lute while Marco turned up the volume on the TV.
Star ran over to the window and summoned Cloudy with her wand.
"Hey, Star!"Cloudy greeted.
"Come on, Rena."Star encouraged. "We can head to the mall while we still have the chance."
"Star, I told you before and I'm telling you again, I'm staying here and getting this over with."Serena responded. "And you should too. Running away isn't going to help you."
Star frowned before taking out her phone and flew away in the sky.
"Hey, Janna Banana, want to go to the mall?"Star asked.
Serena sighed before putting water on the kettle and placing it on the stove to boil.
In the Wilson Mansion...
A red haired woman was typing information on a computer with Lazlo and Valen watching the screen.
The woman wore an orange top with a beige vest, light brown trousers with orange stitches on each side and dark brown boots. In addition, she wore her wedding ring on her left hand and a bootlace necklace around her neck.
The screen finished scanning, but showed no result.
"Let's see...nothing here."Charlotte said checking every part of the Multiverse. "Nothing here either."
"Again the computer doesn't show anything."Valen replied with a frown. "Yet I feel there something evil out there beside magic being drained from the universe."
"Hold on, what is that?"Lazlo asked. "The signal that is coming from Mewni?"
Charlotte typed in a few instructions and the screen showed a monster temple on mountain peak adjacent.
"There is a signal of a magic wand coming from that monster temple."Charlotte stated.
"It could be my granddaughter's missing wand piece."Lazlo suggested.
"Well, good luck finding it, Lazlo."Valen remarked with a smirk.
"Not so fast, Valen."Lazlo stated. "Your going to be the one exploring that temple with Moon."
"No thank you."Valen retorted. "I rather explore by myself."
Charlotte frowned. "Valen."
"Moon would never agree."Valen reminded. "She still blames me of what happened to Pamela."
"Well, I guess it's time she has to put that aside."Lazlo admitted.
Then Adyson arrived into the room.
"Mum, when is dinner ready?"Adyson asked. "I'm starving."
"Adyson, sweetie, you just ate."Charlotte responded.
"Two anmitsu and three plates of odango weren't enough."Adyson groaned. "They were just desserts not lunch."
"Well protect your appetite, sweetheart."Valen commented. "We're going to Mewni."
Back at the Diaz Household...
Ruberiot was singing to Marco and Serena, who were getting tired of his singing.
Where is Princess Star?
Has she traveled far?

The door opened revealing Star standing in the doorway wearing a purple sun hat and sunglasses and carrying a purse.
"You're back!"Ruberiot, Marco and Serena said in unison.
"And he's still here."Star muttered and pointing at Ruberiot. "I thought you guys did the Song Day thing?"
"Ruberiot wanted to wait for you."Serena responded, grimacing a little. "So now that your back-"
"I'm out."Star announced as she started walking out.
"Star. You. Me. Kitchen. NOW."Serena ordered with a glare.
Star groaned. "Fine."
The two girls walked into the kitchen.
"If your going to convince me to do the song day thing, it's not going to work."Star complemented with her arms crossed.
"I'm not."Serena admitted. "I know you hate the Song Day as much as I do and I know you don't want to deal with it, so I can do it if you really don't want too. But at least tell Ruberiot how you feel about it. That way, he can know the truth and we can work on it, okay?
"Okay."Star replied. "Thanks Rena."
"You owe me."Serena admitted with a smirk.
Star nodded and the two of them left the kitchen.
"Ruberiot, could we move upstairs to our room?"Star asked. "That way Marco could have some time to himself. I'm sure we can get more work done upstairs."
"That's a wonderful idea!"Ruberiot agreed as he stood up.
Star and Serena led Ruberiot upstairs to their bedroom.
Ruberiot sat down in a chair with a pad and pen in hand.
"It's an honor to be your official songstrel, your Highnesses."Ruberiot complemented. "I have some really exciting ideas that I can't wait to get your opinion on."
"Well..."Serena replied and glanced at Star. "It looks like it's only going to be me working with you on this Song Day song."
"Ruby, I know my mum sent you here, but honestly, I am sorry, I can't help you."Star stated. "Princess Songs are objectively awful. They are these trite little puff pieces about perfect little princesses with perfect little lives and that's not me! And songstrels like you are part of the problem! Your music just puts pressure on future princesses to be perfect! So you might as well take your stupid notebook and your stupid lute and go back to Mewni, because I have no interest in helping some stupid hack write a stupid princess song!"
"Oh, really?"Ruberiot asked with a frown.
"Yeah, really!"Star replied firmly.
"Fine."Ruberiot answered as he tossed his pad and pen away. "But for what it's worth, I also think the songstrels before me were hacks. You didn't think I had an opinion? That maybe I had some integrity? I wanted to write a real song about real princesses with all their gifts and flaws."
He pulled the rope for the mirror curtain and gestured to the reflection of Star and Serena.
"Don't Mewmans deserve to know their future queen and her closest companion?"Ruberiot questioned. "But you won't even help me do my job! I might as well just take your mom's song and just plug your names in and be done with it! You know, like some kind of hack!"
He leaves through the dimensional portal.
"Wait! Ah, no! No-no-no-no-no! Ruby!"Star protested and looked at Serena. "Why didn't you tell me these were the ideas he had?!"
"I didn't know!"Serena snapped. "We waited for you to come back from your shopping trip!"
At Ruberiot's House...
Ruberiot sits in front of a piano.
"Perfect Princess Star and Serena are great in every way."Ruberiot said. "Hmm, perfect Princess Star is—Argggh!"
He slammed his head on the piano keys.
"It's so awful!"Ruberiot growled and makes discordant note clusters with his face. "Stupid Princess Song! Why do I even try? Face it, Ruberiot. You are a hack like all the rest."
The songstrel crumpled sheet music and tosses it away.
"You'll never amount to anything!"Ruberiot scoffed.
Star and Serena watched as the songstrel struggled doing their song.
"Whoa."Star replied in surprise. "So you're, like, a totally tortured artist. Cool!"
Serena rolled her eyes and gestured Star to talk to Ruberiot.
"That is a lot of paper just to plug a name into a previously existing song."Star commented as she and Serena walked forward.
Ruberiot gasped. "What do you want?"
"You, uh...you forgot your stupid notebook."Star answered. "Ruberiot, do you really hate Princess Songs as much as I do?"
"I do, Princess. I-I thought I could change them. I-I know they can be better. I can do better. But the show is tomorrow, and I have nothing! If I go out there with your mom's old song, I'll be just as bad as all the others."Ruberiot stated and sighed. "This is bad. Why did I drop out of lawstrel school? Good-bye, aspirations. Hello, flipping cornburgers."
"Ruberiot, nothing is that bad when you have a magic wand and a cousin with a magic ring."Star remarked. "How about you, Rena and I turn this silly tradition into something real?"
Ruberiot smiled while Serena smirked in approval.
At Nightfall...
A crowd of Mewmans assembled in the Butterfly castle courtyard, purchasing Star, Serena and Marco merchandise.
"Get your corn slaw here!"the first salespony suggested. "We got corndogs, kettle corn, bacon-wrapped corn!"
"Get your exclusive Star and Serena Butterfly merchs here!"the second salespony stated.
Rhombulus, Lekmet, Hekapoo, and Omnitraxus Prime were seen in the royal seating box.
Queen Moon and King River rushed in to join them.
"Whew. Okay."Queen Moon sighed. "We made it."
King River notice one of Queen Moon's curls went loose.
"Oh, you lost one of your curlybadoos, dear."King River commented and puts curl on side of Queen Butterlfly back in place.
Marco, Serena and Serena entered the place.
Star wore a light blue white dress with puffy sleeves and a large skirt with wave patterns on the left and right. It had two light blue ribbons hanging from a bow on her waist and there were two buttons on the top. The blonde haired girl wore white gloves, along with pale yellow and brown heeled lace-up boots under her dress. Her hair was styled in a large heart shape with a golden tiara.
Serena wore a pink gown that had a mesh with gold bands on it and the top was divided into three, the middle part being white with gold designs and a purple rose design on top, while the others were pink. The sleeves have the same netting as the opening of her dress. The bottom part of the bodice had the same mesh and there was golden ribbons on them. The skirt was all pink and it had a netting and there were sparkles on it. On her head, she wore a gold tiara and pink shoes beneath.
Marco wore a royal white suit with a blue cape and black boots.
The three teenagers took their seats in the royal seating box.
"Hey, everyone!"Star greeted.
"We made it."Serena remarked in relief.
"Hey, Queen."Marco said.
"Oh, my gosh, me and Rena had the worst wardrobe malfunction."Star commented and looked at Marco. "Do you know how hard it is to find a decent shoulder tassel in an Earth mall?"
Star and Serena notice Queen Moon had a twig on her head.
"Oh hey mum."Star responded and pointed at a twig. "You got a little thingy in your hair."
"A what?"Queen Moon asked.
"She means you got a twig on your hair."Serena corrected and pulls the twig out of Queen Moon's hair with her magic.
"Oh."Queen Moon replied.
"How'd that get there?"Star asked.
Queen Moon placed the twig down.
"Thank you, dear."Queen Moon answered and looked at the two girls. "Star, Serena, I want to tell you something."
"We know it's not very princess-like to show up late, but did you see traffic on the Royal Mile?"Star asked.
"Not to mention, the servants left the floors slippery and we almost slipped."Serena retorted.
"Please, let me finish."Queen Moon stated and smiled. "I just want to say how...how proud I am of you both."
Star and Serena were surprised to hear this.
"What?"Star and Serena said in unison.
A dimensional portal opened inside the throne room as Lazlo, Valen and Adyson walked out of it.
The three looked out the window and saw a huge crowd below.
"Looks like they haven't started yet."Lazlo commented.
"I guess we have arrived on time."Adyson remarked excitedly.
"Can't believe I have to be back here."Valen scoffed in disappointment.
"I know Princess Songs aren't exactly your cup of tea and I know I can be...hard on you two sometime, so it means a lot to me that you both still went through with it."Queen Moon admitted kindly.
"Thanks, mum."Star responded.
"Thank you, auntie."Serena replied.
"But, uh...just so you know, Ruby, me and Rena, we kinda changed some stuff."Star answered with a nervous smile. "I mean, it's just not gonna sound exactly like your Princess Song did. So, you know, don't freak out or anything."
"Thank you for telling me, Star, but I trust your judgment."Queen Moon assured.
"Ohhhh, thank you!"Star chuckled nervously. "But we really went off-script. It's all good, but there might be, like—"
"And now, Mewni's newest court composer, the songstrel Ruberiot..."the Announcer said.
The audience clapped at Ruberiot.
"...in honour of the Royal Family..."the Announcer commented.
A spotlight shines on Serena, Star, Moon and River, who waved at the crowd.
"I really hope you like the song, Aunt Moon."Serena admitted while waving.
"...presents Star and Serena Butterfly's Princess Song!"the Announcer stated.
Marionettes of Star and Serena Butterfly were lowered onto the stage near Ruberiot.
Who are the maids with the silk-like hair?
Who sleep on moonbeams and dances on air
With tears made of honey and a heart full of bunnies
Whose infinite virtues are known near and far
It's Mewni's own sweethearts, our dear Princess Star and Princess Serena
Star and Serena glanced at Queen Moon, seeing that she looked relaxed before looking back at Ruberiot.
And under the shimmer and rubies and pearls
Lies hidden fierce and adventurous girls
The forces of evil that lurk in the night
Will cower in fear when these shooting stars ignite!
Ruberiot smashed his lute on the ground, surprising the audience.
He tore his clothes away to reveal a glam rock outfit and he takes out an electric guitar.
Ruberiot started playing propulsive rock.
Weaving magic like a born spell-caster
And wreaking havoc like a natural disaster
They rock their Narwhal Blasts and Warnicorn Stampedes
They're gonna earn their crowns, so hail to the Quee-e-e-ens!
Star's and Serena's names came up onto the stage in bright lights.
Even wooden warnicorns and narwhals appeared at the upper corners of the stage.
Colourful fireworks went off causing the audience to start cheering and jumping with the music.
Star and Serena started lip syncing the next lyrics.
Cause they're rebel princesses, they're the best
They're balls of lightning in hot pink dresses
They're thunderstorms roaring through the night
They're our shooting stars and they're lighting up the sky!
Oooh...
Ruberiot slid onto his knees as he hit the last chord of the verse.
Lazlo and Valen smiled at the view.
Everybody in the audience was jumping and cheering as Adyson danced to the song.
"Yeah!"Rhombulus cheered and jumped up. "Those are my girls!"
"What a delightful little ditty!"Queen Moon remarked. "Good job, girls!"
"Oh, yay."Star responded. "It's not over yet..."
Serena bit her lip as Ruberiot started playing a slow, heavy beat tome.
The lights on stage turned a sinister green and fog started to roll off stage.
Shooting stars shining in the night so bright
They started to attract a pair of envious eyes
The villain rose up from behind the jester's cross
They drove him away, but didn't know what they had lost
A giant, evil looking Ludo rose up in the back and the audience went quiet, staring at the monster in horror.
Then a wooden Glossaryck and book of spells lowered a little, just above the monster Ludo's hands.

How could they know Ludo would take 'em for himself?
Star confessed to her parents, all full of dread
At that moment, two large wooden puppets appeared behind Ruberiot, one of Queen Moon and the other of King River.
Both of them had one hand up over their mouths and the other hand was held out, keeping a solemn promise.
The king and queen exchanged a look and this is what they said
This is what they said, this is what they said:
We will keep your silence for you
From the citizens of Mewni and the High Commission too
To keep the peace, we will play the game

Lazlo and Valen looked on in awe of what they were hearing.
"Yikes."Adyson muttered.
Queen Moon looked at Star and Serena with a shocked expression.
"Girls?"Queen Moon asked.
Star did strained noises while Serena whistled slowly.
"Girls?"Queen Moon repeated.
"Mum, what did you expect?"Star asked. "I told you I couldn't do some puff piece. I had to do what felt right for me. Look, it's over now, so we just gotta move on."
"Not yet, I am afraid."Serena commented with a nervous smile.
"What do you mean?"Star asked in confusion.
Royal secret – one last to tell
A princess under true love's spell
A marionette of Marco joins the Star marionette on stage as the Serena marionette went away.
Star gasped at the sight.
"Wait, is that me?!"Marco asked in confusion.
"Uhhh, Ruberiot never told me about this part!"Star stated.
A spotlight shines on Star and Marco as Serena leans down from the light.
Who is the boy in the earthly attire?
The prince of Princess Star's deepest desire
I don't need to show it, I think we all know it
But just to be certain, I'll say it again
Star Butterfly is in love with her best friend!
And his name is Marco Diaz.
"Rena, what have you done?"Star mumbled while covering her face.
"The right thing."Serena suggested with a tight smile.
Foreeeeeeveeeeeermooooooooooooooooooooore!
Ruberiot stood on stage, arms raised and panting for air.
He waited for the audience to cheer.
Instead, the audience members turned to each other, murmuring and starting to shout.
"Hey, what's wrong?"Ruberiot asked. "You're supposed to be clapping."
"Say what?! The Queen lied to us!"
"Well, technically, it was a lie by omission."
"Omitters!"
The audience started yelling angrily and booing.
The audience started throwing food at Star, Marco, Serena, Moon, River and the Magic High Commission.
The group took shelter inside the throne room.
"Mum! I-I didn't realize this would happen!"Star admitted. "I thought they wanted to know the real Star and Serena Butterfly!"
"They don't, Star."Queen Moon replied. "They just want to believe that you and Serena are perfect little princesses. And sometimes, the truth is dangerous."
"With all due respect, Moon, with holding information about Glossaryck and the spell book has put us all in danger!"Hekapoo admitted.
Lekmet bleated.
"Uh, y-yeah! Like the goat said!"Rhombulus chuckled nervously.
"I assure you, I had every intention of—!"Queen Moon said.
"Every intention of what?!"Hekapoo questioned.
"I had everything under control!"Queen Moon shouted.
"How dare you hide something like that?!"Hekapoo snapped.
"I wasn't trying to hide anything!"Queen Moon protested.
Queen Moon and Hekapoo continued arguing.
Marco walked up to Star with a stunned expression.
"Uhhhhh...so—"Marco started.
"Hold that thought, Marco."Star said as she backed away.
Star went up to a nearby window and summoned Cloudy.
"Hey, Star!"Cloudy greeted.
"H-Hey, Cloudy."Star responded. "Let's, uh, get out of here."
Star turned and saw Serena leaning out of the window, looking at her with pleading eyes.
"I'm not sorry for what I did."Serena admitted. "I thought it would finally help with you and Marco! Now's your chance to finally talk! Please stay!"
"I can't."Star responded with a frown. "You didn't help Rena, you ruined everything."
Serena stood in shock at the window as Star turned away and Cloudy flew off quickly in the sky.
Adyson walked up to Serena and held her hand in comfort.
The two sisters notice Queen Moon wore a silver armour dress with her hair tied in a ponytail while Valen wore a grey knight armour.
"Hey, what's going on?"Serena asked.
"We are going to storm Ludo's temple to get Glossaryck back."Queen Moon stated. "And looks like your father is joining the rampage."
"To be clear, this was Lazlo's idea not mine."Valen reminded coldly.
"I am sure you two and the magical high commission will be successful with the information Charlotte delivered."Lazlo assured.
"Can I come too?"Serena asked hopefully.
"No Serena, you should just go back to Earth with your friends."Queen Moon replied. "You and Star have caused enough trouble for one night."
"I guess hiding that I'm illegitimate was the right thing too?"Serena questioned with a glare.
Queen Moon was astonished of what Serena just said while Valen looked down with a hint of guilt.
"I'll take them home."Lazlo stated softly.
Lazlo opened a portal with his dimensional scissors causing him, Marco and Adyson to go in followed by Serena.
