The Untold Story of Serena Butterfly
Chapter 56: Return to Mewni
In a carriage...
Star was watching Marco's plight via her wand while wearing one of Marco's red hoodie.
Serena was checking through the pages in the Book of Sorcery while fiddling with Mercedes key that was dangling around her neck.
"Star loved Sugar Seeds."Marco cried and puts his head on the table before turning up the music.
"I'll pour you a bowl."Angie suggested.
"I tried."Marco said sadly. "I can't even find the box."
"They're in the cupboard behind the dog food."Star stated.
"I hid it so well."Marco admitted.
"Behind the dog food, Diaz!"Star commented.
"Star would eat all of them and now they're both gone!"Marco sobbed holding a laser puppy in his arms.
"It's behind the dog food, Marco. Stop being so dramatic."Star retorted and puts off the spell. "Why do you have to be such a cute idiot?"
The blonde haired sniffed the hoodie she was wearing.
"Oh, Marco, yuck!"Star scoffed. "When was the last time you washed this thing?!"
Valen drove the carriage and Queen Moon stood next to him.
"Star! We need to be quiet!"Queen Moon stated. "We don't know who might be listening."
"Sorry mum."Star apologised as she opened the carriage door and it falls off. "Sorry."
"It's okay."Queen Moon assured. "Serena, can you check on the Commission?"
Serena went next to Star to see Omnitraxus Prime, Rhombulus and Hekapoo floating like balloons and were being pulled by the carriage.
"They seem...okay."Serena said. "Still in their stasis."
Hekapoo had a bird's nest on top of her.
"Oh, looks like ol' Hekapoo is gonna be an auntie!"Star giggled. "So, how exactly are we going to de-balloonify them?"
"Once we're at the Sanctuary, the Well of Magic should be able to rejuvenate them."Queen Moon replied.
"Dad is Lekmet's gonna meet us there?"Serena asked.
"He'll meet us there."Valen said quietly.
"Okay, great."Star laughed. "So, what's up with that warnicorn?"
"What?"Queen Moon asked.
The warnicorn started panting heavily before he vanished entirely in a puff of smoke.
"Oh no."Valen mumbled.
The carriage began to veer out of control.
"Okay...now this is a little too fast!"Serena complemented nervously.
"Mum, Uncle Valen, what is going on?"Star asked.
"It's the fritz!"Queen Moon replied. "It's causing all magic to..."
The carriage turned into a plain wooden wagon.
The wagon turned into a smaller 'Butter Flyer' red wagon.
"...to weaken and..."Queen Moon started.
The wagon disappeared altogether, leaving just Star, Serena, Valen, Queen Moon and the three balloons.
The group skid to a halt.
"...fade."Valen muttered.
"It's okay."Queen Moon responded. "We're all right as long as we have this magical path to guide us."
The lights on their path started buzz and powered off.
Valen frowned. "You were saying?"
"I guess we're setting up camp."Queen Moon admitted.
Valen picked up the belongings that was in the carriage while Star and Serena looked for a place to tie down the floating high commission.
Star and Serena picked some branches and placed them on the floor.
Queen Moon turned to the pile of branches and tried to start a fire with her magic.
But because of how tired she was from the previous fight, the Queen of Mewni failed to.
Queen Moon grunted and sighed in defeat.
"I got this one, mum."Star assured and holds out her wand, glowing with green magic.
"Stop!"Queen Moon protested. "It's corrupted!"
"What? No, no, no, it's fine! Don't worry about it."Star assured. "It does this all the time. Glossaryck never cared."
"Glossaryck isn't here and he's probably not coming back."Valen retorted.
"Wait, what are you talking about?"Serena questioned.
"Toffee has Glossaryck and your wand seems tainted by his magic as well. It's the same magic I saw when me and Valen fought Ludo. Now let's start a fire and we'll head for the Sanctuary in the morning."Queen Moon suggested and opened her suitcase. "There must be some helpful in here."
Queen Moon pulled out an ear of corn with a note.
"I corn't wait to see you again."Queen Moon read and tossed it aside, pulling out more items. "Uh, did River pack this with nothing but..."
Queen Moon pulled out a hand fan with a picture of River in his underwear, sending kisses.
It's caption read 'Miss you! Kisses OXOX River (your husband)'.
"Ugh, no."Queen Moon groaned and throws out fan.
Star and Serena were rubbing some branches together.
"What are you two doing?"Queen Moon asked.
Star and Serena continued rubbing the sticks together causing a fire to ignite.
"Staring a fire."Star answered. "Duh."
"Did your father teach you and Serena that?"Valen asked.
"No, Marco did. Marco taught us a lot, like how to mope, self-pity..."Star explained. "Ya know, all the cool teen stuff. And now that's all me and Rena has."
"The things he taught us on Earth were pretty fun."Serena admitted.
Queen Moon stamped out the fire with her foot.
"Wha-Mum!"Star snapped.
"Shh-shh-shh!"Queen Moon hushed.
While hiding in two bushes, Star, Serena, Valen and Queen Moon watched as some rats sniff the area.
"Looks like the creep send Ludo's goons after us."Valen said with a glare.
"It looks like they're just scouts."Queen Moon whispered. "We'll let them—"
Star and Serena sneaked up behind the rats, ready to attack them.
Star activated her wand that glowed with green magic while Serena activated her ring that glowed with red magic.
"Girls, no!"Queen Moon protested.
The rats heard Moon and scampered.
"Ugh!"Star and Serena groaned in annoyance. "Fine!"
Star and Serena picked up some sticks to fight the rats.
"Stick blast!"Star chanted.
The blonde haired girl swings, hitting the rat into the air.
"Yah!"Serena shouted and smacked some rats away with her two sticks.
"Girls!"Queen Moon called out while running forward.
Star spins her stick while the final rat spins another rat.
The rat was thrown on to Star's stick and Serena smacked it off.
The rat landed next to the belongings.
"Yeah, we did it!"Star cheered.
"And we looked great doing it."Serena chuckled.
Star and Serena high fived each other.
"Girls, we need to get out of here immediately."Queen Moon stated. "I can't believe you both would be so foolish as to..."
"Hey, stop complaining!"Valen snapped. "You should be proud that they chose to fight away those rats instead of hiding!"
"Well, they chose the wrong decision!"Queen Moon argued.
A rat squeaked as it released the High Magic Commission's balloons to the wind.
Queen Moon gasped. "The High Commission!"
The group took off after the balloons; in addition, Star makes a face at one of the rats.
Queen Moon jumped to reach the balloons, but they were too far out of reach.
The balloons continued to drift further away.
"Where, where did they go?"Queen Moon panted.
"They're right there."Serena replied.
The orange haired girl pointed to a tree littered with thorns and the skeletons of dead creatures.
Star grinned. "Guess we're goin' up."
"Ugh, fine."Queen Moon responded.
The group started climbing on the tree.
Queen Moon pushed aside thorny branches.
"Ugh, never listens to their mother or aunt."Queen Moon grumbled.
"C'mon, mum!"Star encouraged. "What's the big deal?"
Valen slashed away the vines that attempt to grab Serena with his sword.
"The big deal is your recklessness has put us in harm's way."Queen Moon responded.
Valen smirked. "It's not a mystery where Star got that from."
"It's just a little danger."Star admitted.
"Besides we've been in way worse than this."Serena reminded smugly.
Star climbed by a skeleton wearing a purple hat.
The blonde haired put the purple hat on elbowed the skeleton.
"You know what we're talking about."Star said.
"Mmm! Mmm!"
Queen Moon was trapped by vines which covered her mouth.
"Mum!"Star said and pulled her out. "Are you okay?"
"Seeing you tangled in vines brings back some good old memories."Valen chuckled.
"Let's just get the Magical High Commission and get out of here."Queen Moon admitted with a frown.
"You might want to lose the hat, cuz."Serena suggested.
"Okay."Star answered and returned the hat to the skeleton.
The four reached at the top of the tree untangling the High Commission balloons.
"The Sanctuary!"Queen Moon remarked.
Valen, Star and Serena looked over to see a large lake.
The group went off the tree and walked up to an alligator like creature.
"Is it like a little Sanctuary guardian?"Star asked with a smirk.
"No, he's the gatekeeper."Queen Moon responded.
"You can't be serious."Serena said.
"Bwah!"Queen Moon groaned.
"Bwaaah!"the Gatekeeper repeated.
"She's serious."Valen sighed in disproval.
"Rahh!"Queen Moon replied.
"Wahh!"the Gatekeeper said.
The two continued to exchange similar noises.
Star and Serena stared at each other with confused expressions.
"She's lost her marbles."Star whispered.
Serena nodded in agreement.
"Wah!"the Gatekeeper groaned and crawled into the water.
Soon, it rose above the water, supported by a large pile of similar creatures.
"Wah!"the Gatekeepers shouted. "Wah!"
The pile continued to rise.
All the creatures then leap off the pile to reveal the Sanctuary now above the water.
"Whoa."Star and Serena said in unison.
Queen Moon, Valen, Star and Serena walked cross the water via stepping stones and entered the Sanctuary.
Inside the Sanctuary...
"Whoa!"Star said and looked at the ceiling. "Look at all the Glossarycks."
"Yes, Star."Queen Moon replied. "The queens of Mewni have been coming here for generations."
"I remember Pamela mentioning something like this."Valen admitted.
Serena gasped at the sight of the temple.
It was a large circular room covered in ivy and vines.
The center of the room had a large tower with three pillars holding up a coned roof over what looked like a well.
From the walls, water flowed from the Glossaryck statue's mouths, creating the water surrounding the tower.
Star and Serena stopped just at the water's edge.
"So what now?"Serena asked.
Queen Moon rotated a valve which raises three large flowers from the depths of the pool inside the Sanctuary.
"All right."Queen Moon said. "Let's get the Commission into their pods so we can revive them."
"Let's go, guys!"Star ordered looking at the balloons.
Star and Serena tied each balloon to one of the flower pods.
Each pod lighted up once the two girls finished tying.
"Valen, be on look out incase anyone comes."Queen Moon ordered.
"As you wish, your highness."Valen scoffed and walked away.
"All right, I'm going to open the Wellspring."Queen Moon said. "Stand clear."
The Queen of Mewni rotated another valve, which caused troughs to unfold, delivering a dark green gooey liquid to each flower pod.
"Ew."Serena muttered in disgust.
"Is that stuff supposed to be all black and goopy like that?"Star asked.
"No, it's not!"Queen Moon responded in shock.
Queen Moon quickly closed the valve.
The queen and the two girls climbed up to the top of the Wellspring.
In the well there was dark green liquid inside.
"Well, that is just creepy."Serena retorted.
"Oh, I feel like that's not how it's supposed to look."Star responded.
"It's worse than I'd feared."Queen Moon admitted.
"Mum?"Star asked.
"Auntie?"Serena asked.
"We'll have to go with plan B."Queen Moon commented.
"All right, Plan B."Star chuckled. "What's plan B?"
Star sat down on a fallen piece of pillar and Serena stood next to her.
"We'll talk about that after we get settled in."Queen Moon explained and looked at Star. "Look at you, you're covered in scratches. Let's fix you up."
Queen Moon takes Marco's hoodie off of Star and tears off one of its arms to make a bandage.
"What are you doing?!"Star demanded.
"Star, what do you want me to do?"Queen Moon asked and tied the bandage at Star's arm. "It's in tatters already."
"Uh, Aunt Moon?"Serena said. "If the well is messed up, how are we going to revive the Magic High Commission?"
"We don't need to worry about that right now, Serena. This sanctuary is very well hidden."Queen Moon assured and pushed some bushes aside, revealing a vending machine. "Now, do you want creamed corn or corned cream?"
"What?"Star asked.
"To eat, Star."Queen Moon answered. "Generations of Butterflys have come here in times of danger. We'll be safe for as long as it takes. Now, does any of you have any change?"
"Hold on, so we're just going to hide and eat as your plan B?"Serena questioned as she stood up. "That's a horrible plan B!"
"Your safety is my priority right now."Queen Moon complemented.
"Uh, me or Star didn't blow up our whole lives just so you could give up!"Serena reminded with a glare. "Come on, we could track those rats back to Jerkface and end this whole thing!"
"Even if the Magical High Commission was okay, we still wouldn't be strong enough to defeat Toffee."Queen Moon replied. "Our best bet is to lay low until the situation changes."
A look of disbelief grew on Serena's face as a glare formed on Star's face.
"You lied to us."Star said with a frown. "What else have you lied about, mum? I bet Lekmet isn't even meeting us here!"
"Lekmet is dead, Star and it could happen to us too."Queen Moon stated. "Toffee won't stop until he finds this!"
Moon takes out a vial with Toffee's finger in it which startled Serena.
"Did you take that from my closet?"Star asked. "And you're just carrying it around?
"It's too dangerous to do anything but stay."Queen Moon answered.
"No! I am not hiding here until I am old and gray like you!"Star argued holding out her wand. "My wand and Rena's ring being corrupted have to mean something!"
"No, Star! The wands and the ring are linked!"Queen Moon protested. "He'll find us!"
"Oh, like he won't find us with you carrying his finger around!"Star scoffed. "I defeated him once! I can do it again!"
"Since his now back, we can beat him if we stand together!"Serena commented firmly and looked at Star. "Star, take us out of here!"
"With pleasure!"Star agreed and rose up her wand. "Fantastic Exit Beam!"
"Star, stop!"Queen Moon ordered.
"Why?!"Star demanded. "What happened to cool warrior queen mum?!"
"I was never a cool warrior queen, girls."Queen Moon admitted and started tearing up. "I was a happy-go-lucky girl like you. And then Toffee and his monsters killed my mother."
Star and Serena froze in shock of what they just heard.
Toffee killed Comet Butterfly, Moon's mother and Star's grandmother.
Queen Moon walked over to a bench, sits down and covered up her face with her hands.
"I thought you sent Grandma to a grandma farm to hang out with other grandmas."Star said sadly.
"That is my fault."Queen Moon responded in shame. "I never told either of you, how I became queen."
Star and Serena sit down beside Queen Moon.
After a pause, Queen Moon looked at Star's wand causing her to smile briefly, making Star and Serena smile back at her.
Valen stood at the entrance, watching the sight with an approved smile.
"Can you tell us now?"Serena asked hopefully.
"I was about your age when it happened."Queen Moon explained. "I didn't know what to do, so I spoke to Eclipsa."
Surprised expressions grew on Star and Serena's faces.
"Eclipsa?"Serena said in surprise. "The Queen of Darkness? That Eclipsa?"
"Yes."Queen Moon replied.
"But she's been dead for hundreds of years!"Star said.
"No. Eclipsa's alive."Queen Moon stated. "And I made a deal with her."
