Chapter 58: Puddle Defender

At the Sanctuary...

The vending machine inside was empty and beeping because was out of order.

Suddenly black ooze seeped on the floor where Moon, Valen, Star and Serena were sleeping.

Queen Moon and Valen became wide awake, seeing the ooze that was spreading towards them and the two girls.

The adults went to their daughters to wake them up.

"Serena, we need to leave."Valen stated.

Serena slowly opened her eyes and notice the ooze on the floor.

"What the?!"Serena said in shock.

"Star, wake up."Queen Moon ordered.

Star quickly woke up.

"Marco, we're late for school!"Star panicked.

"I'm not Marco."Queen Moon replied.

The black ooze started gushing in from multiple places.

"Oh, no!"Star panicked. "The High Commission!"

"Leave them!"Queen Moon ordered. "There's no time!"

The group head to the door, but when Valen pushed the button, it leaked ooze and the door remained locked.

"There's no way out!"Queen Moon panicked.

"Star, hit a side!"Serena suggested.

"Escape Route Blast!"Star chanted as she took out her wand.

Star's wand emitted a powerful green burst which knocks a huge hole in the side of the Sanctuary.

Star, Serena, Queen Moon and Valen washed up on the shore as the Sanctuary sinked back into the depths of the water.

"Magic is not supposed to do that."Valen stated.

"I'm not sure what that was."Queen Moon replied and tried to cast a spell. "But my magic's gone."

"It seems like jerkface has consumed all magic in the universe."Serena replied bitterly.

"Rats."Star said.

"It will be okay."Queen Moon assured.

"No, rats."Star admitted. "We gotta hide."

Star, Queen Moon, Valen and Serena went behind a log while three rats sailed by on a wooden raft.

"Narwhal–"Star started and took out her wand.

"Star, no."Queen Moon responded and grabbed the wand.

"Mum, you can't take my wand."Star argued.

"It was mine first!"Queen Moon snapped. "No more magic until we find a way to stop this."

Valen and Serena looked at their companions with disapproved looks.

"If you two are done arguing, we need to go somewhere else."Valen reminded with a frown. "Because we can't stay out here."

"My dad is right, auntie."Serena agreed. "It's creepy out here."

A cobra hissed behind the log and attempts to bite Star, but Star promptly punched it's mouth closed.

Then a small frog croaked next to Star.

"Ribbit."a frog croaked. "Ribbit."

"Ribbit."Star responded before looking at Queen Moon and Valen. "Me and Rena think we have an idea where we can go. But you both have to trust us."

A While Later...

Star knocked on the door to Buff Frog's house.

Buff Frog opened it, wearing his evening robe and underwear.

Queen Moon gasped while Valen simply remained calm.

"Buff Frog!"Star and Serena said in unison.

"Star and Serena Butterfly!"Buff Frog remarked and hugged the two girls. "Oh, my little sweet potatoes. It's been too long."

"Ahem."Queen Moon retorted clearing her throat.

"Oh."Buff Frog replied and pulled his robe closed. "Greetings."

"Mum, Uncle Valen, this is Yvgeny Bulgolyubov."Star introduced.

"Ah, no, no."Buff Frog admitted. "Please call me Buff Frog."

"He used to work for Ludo, but now he's in our side."Serena commented.

"What?!"Queen Moon questioned.

"Hey, Buff Frog, can we crash with you for a night?"Star asked.

"Of course."Buff Frog agreed. "I owe you and Serena for all that tadpole-sitting."

"Girls, can I speak with you?"Queen Moon asked walking out of range of Buff Frog. "We cannot stay with him. He's a monster."

"Mum, get with the times."Star answered with a frown. "Not all monsters are bad."

"Besides didn't my mum tried to bring peace between the mewmans and the monsters?"Serena reminded.

Star and Serena looked at Buff Frog, who smiled back at them.

Out in the forest, a twig snapped.

"What was that?"Queen Moon asked.

Many sinister eyes in the forest peer at them.

"I gusss it seems we have no other choice."Valen commented firmly.

They began to entered Buff Frog's house.

"Uh, welcome to my..."Buff Frog started.

Queen Moon walked inside, ignoring Buff Frog invitation.

"...home."Buff Frog finished.

Valen went inside followed by Star and Serena.

Inside Buff Frog's Home...

Star, Serena, Queen Moon and Valen find themselves in a puddle of mud.

"You're in luck. It's rainy season."Buff Frog explained and picked up mud, applying it to his head. "Ah, so good for the skin. Oh, uh, no shoes in house."

Star and Serena smiled while Queen Moon scowled.

"I am, how you say, germaphobe."Buff Frog replied.

Star threw her boots off while Serena simply placed her flats away.

"Ah."Star giggled. "I feel so free."

"I totally forgot we used to have fun playing in the mud when we were little."Serena chuckled as she sat on the mud.

Star walked across the mud and then willingly fell face-first into it.

"Buff Frog, wonderful home."Star commented.

"Oh, thank you."Buff Frog replied. "Is a bit of a mess right now. Please take a seat."

Buff Frog pointed to his couch which had green slugs on it.

"Oh! Are those...slugs?"Queen Moon asked distastefully.

"Slugs keep furniture clean."Buff Frog explained. "I-I thought everyone knew that."

Valen sat down on the sofa.

"Seems fine to me."Valen stated and ate one of the slugs. "So are the slugs."

"I'll stand."Queen Moon assured with a hint of disgust.

"Yo, Buff Frog, where them babies at?"Star asked in a street voice.

"Oh, I just put them down for nap."Buff Frog responded.

The frog babies come leaping out behind the couch.

"Babies!"Star laughed.

Buff Frog's babies leap on Star and Serena, pushing them into the mud.

"Oh, I missed your little baby faces so much!"Star laughed.

The babies all reach out with their arms to hug Star and Serena.

"Oh, wow."Serena remarked. "You have little baby arms."

"Ah, yes."Buff Frog agreed. "All except little Katrina. She is late bloomer."

"Oh, you little special snowflake."Star giggled and picked up Katrina.

Valen smiled at the sight before an idea to came to his mind.

"Babies, say hello to Queen Butterfly."Buff Frog suggested.

"That really isn't–"Queen Moon started.

All the babies jumped on Queen Moon, knocking her into the mud.

Valen smirked in amusement.

"Star, Serena, I have been so worried about you."Buff Frog said.

"Why? We're good."Star assured.

"Did something happen?"Serena asked.

"Well, when Ludo took your castle, I thought, you know..."Buff Frog explained.

Buff Frog made a slicing sound while gesturing across his neck.

Star and Serena became shocked hearing that information.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait."Star said. "Toffee has our castle?"

"Toffee is dead."Buff Frog replied. "Ludo in castle."

"Jerkface is not dead."Serena retorted. "He is inside Ludo."

"Oh."Buff Frog answered. "That is...so creepy."

"Yeah, it is."Valen agreed.

"Papa! Dad's still in the castle!"Star panicked. "We have to go save him."

"No."Queen Moon replied.

"He is your husband!"Star reminded.

"Star, I've made my decision."Queen Moon admitted. "We stay here."

"Man, this is ironic."Valen said as he leaned against the coach and folded his arms. "The once brave little queen of Mewni is now a scared old lady."

"Shut your rude mouth!"Queen Moon snapped. "At least I am not someone that made a deal with the devil to make myself look younger!"

Buff Frog, Star and Serena looked at Valen with startled looks.

"Long story."Valen said simply.

Queen Moon looked at Buff Frog.

"Excuse me, where is your washroom?"Queen Moon asked.

"Uh, washroom?"Buff Frog asked in confusion.

"Yes."Queen Moon replied. "I'd like to freshen up a bit."

"She needs to make boom-boom."Star corrected.

Queen Moon blushed in embarrassment.

Buff Frog laughed. "The washroom is out back."

"Thank you."Queen Moon mumbled and walked away.

"I'm sorry."Star apologised. "My mum's got...monster issues."

"Yes, I'm getting certain...vibe from her."Buff Frog replied.

"Don't worry, your not the only one."Valen admitted as he checked a hologram map.

Serena sat next to her father, ignoring the slugs that were slithering around the couch.

"We all are."Star commented. "But, Buff Frog, me and Rena came here for a favour."

"Of course."Buff Frog answered. "Anything for you both."

"I need you to hang out with my mum."Star explained. "I need you to keep her busy while me and Rena go find Toffee."

"Star, Toffee is very dangerous."Buff Frog warned firmly. "Do you have plan?"

"I have plan."Star assured.

"You have plan?"Buff Frog questioned pointing a finger at Star.

"I have a plan."Star replied with a smirk.

"Okay."Buff Frog replied. "When Moon returns, I will distract her."

"Distract me from what?"Queen Moon asked.

"Uh, from this."Buff Frog answered.

Buff Frog lifted up part of his chest, revealing a Ludo tattoo with the word 'Forever' written below it.

Star looked shocked while Valen placed his hand on Serena's eyes.

"I didn't want you to see it."Buff Frog said. "Bad choices in past."

"Oh. Thank you."Queen Moon replied. "So what do you monsters do for entertainment?"

"Uh, we could smash bugs."Buff Frog suggested holding a bug.

Star elbowed Buff Frog.

"We could play board game."Buff Frog admitted and showed a board game.

"Great idea, Buff Frog."Star remarked. "Me and Rena will hang out with the babies in their room.

Star ran to the babies room with Serena and shut the door.

"Your daughter is...very strange."Buff Frog commented.

Queen Moon frowned. "Thank you."

"We have many option of board game. Hungry Hungry Mewmans!"Buff Frog stated showing a pile of board games. "Mewman Slayer, Monstropoly, Mewman Trap, Monster Conquerors, Castle Crushers, Kill the Queen, Mewman vs. Monster. Oh! My favourite–Puddle Defender."

"Hmm, interesting."Queen Moon said.

Buff Frog pulled out game tokens.

"I like babushka monster."Buff Frog remarked.

Queen Moon picked up angry princess figure.

"I don't know why, but I'm drawn to this one."Queen Moon said with a suspicious look.

"What do you know, it looks exactly like you."Valen chuckled.

Queen Moon glared at Valen.

"Okay, the rules of Puddle Defender are..."Buff Frog explained.

Buff Frog sees Star and Serena beginning to make their stealthy escape.

"Uh..."Buff Frog started.

Star and Serena gives Buff Frog thumbs up.

"Um...the rules are..."Buff Frog started.

"Yes?"Queen Moon questioned in a frustrated tone.

"Uh, rules are simple."Buff Frog said. "The evil bloodthirsty Mewman that's you must try and sneak past watchful monster parent, that's me, break into daycare, explode helpless monster babies and turn them into stew for eating."

Queen Moon gasped. "That is horrible!"

Star and Serena snapped off pieces of cane bamboo, which Moon heared.

"Hey, here is dice!"Buff Frog responded quickly. "You roll first."

Queen Moon rolled her dice.

"Seven. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven."Queen Moon said and draws out a card. "You are filthy Mewman. Use teeth-sharpening spell for better eating of monster baby."

Star swam across the mud puddle under its surface using her cane/bamboo to breathe.

"Really?"Queen Moon asked.

"Is this fun? Heh."Buff Frog chuckled and rolled a dice. "Who will get to daycare first?"

He rolled the dice and it landed on five.

"Suspense is killing me."Buff Frog said and drew out a card. "Congratulations. Oh, you set a Mewman camp on fire. Collect four corn pieces from bank."

"Hmm, come on."Queen Moon mumbled and moved her piece.

"Oh, you land in mud puddle. You get nothing."Buff Frog admitted and rolled the dice. "Tough break."

"Hmm...this game seems a tad biased."Queen Moon said.

"Really? I never noticed."Buff Frog said and moved his piece. "Yay! I get more corn!"

Star broke the surface of the mud, coughed and covered her mouth.

Serena coughed as she came out of the mud.

"Bad idea."Serena whispered.

Queen Moon turned around to look at Buff Frog.

"Did you hear something?"Queen Moon asked looking at Buff Frog.

Star and Serena managed to avoid being spotted from Moon by dangling from the ceiling using vines.

"I hear nothing."Buff Frog lied while sweating.

"You know, it's monsters that eat Mewman babies."Queen Moon commented.

"Oh, really?"Buff Frog asked and rolled his dice. "Can you name a time when a monster has ever done such a thing?"

"Well, no, but when I was a child, we played a game called Castle Defender about Mewmans protecting our babies from ravenous monsters."Queen Moon explained as she rolled the dice.

"And Pamela never played that game with you because she found it stupid."Valen commented.

Queen Moon rolled her eyes as she moved her piece forward and knocked a frog game token.

"That idea had to come from somewhere."Queen Moon said.

"Because it was in a children's board game?"Buff Frog asked with a smirk.

"I just think that monsters would have less of a reputation if they didn't act so bloodthirsty all the time."Queen Moon commented.

"Monsters only act that way to protect their babies from Mewmans!"Buff Frog snapped angrily. "You may not understand, but monsters will do anything for our children."

"Don't talk to me about what I'm willing to do! Why do you think me and Valen are here in this swamp?"Queen Moon shouted. "To protect Star and Serena from Toffee! Don't you think I'm worried to death about my husband? But I have to keep my child and niece safe at all costs! Something you probably wouldn't understand...because you're a monster!"

"Oh no..."Valen muttered covering his face.

Buff Frog threw the game board away in anger.

"You insult me, Queen Moon! My buffbabies, they are my life!"Buff Frog yelled. "And that is why...Star and Serena Butterfly!"

Buff Frog whipped around, pointing at Star who's know right at the doorway.

Star froze at her position.

"I will not help you two escape!"Buff Frog commented.

"Star!"Queen Moon scowled.

"Buff Frog!"Star snapped.

"Star and Serena will be safe here."Buff Frog said.

Buff Frog pulled a handle from the ceiling, which spring all kinds of traps into place around his house, effectively locking it down.

"Keeps babies in and dangers out."Buff Frog instructed.

"I should have realized."Queen Moon said. "But of course. You're a parent too."

Valen notice his sword was gone causing him to get confused.

"Must've dropped it outside."Valen scoffed.

The man sighed but then a sudden realisation went on his mind.

"I can't believe you're taking her side!"Star complained.

"Go to your room!"Buff Frog and Queen Moon shouted in unison.

Star angrily began to stomp to the other side to go back to the babies room.

"Wait."Valen stated as he stood up. "Where's Serena?"

Shocked looks grew on Queen Moon, Buff Frog and Star's faces.

Serena was no longer in Buff Frog's house!

Outside...

Serena was riding on a wild warnicorn out of the Forest of Certain Death in the middle of the night.

The orange haired girl rode to Mewni and passed the slums, directly heading towards the castle.

In Butterfly Castle...

Serena kicked the door open, revealing the entrance.

Inside the throne room it was empty and no one was around.

Serena took out her father's sword as she slowly went inside the castle.

"Castle is empty, but I am not falling for this."Serena retorted with a glare.

Suddenly a spider web was thrown towards Serena causing her to carte wheel out of the wall.

Ludo's eagle flew down to grab Serena, but the orange haired girl kicked him away.

"Of course, you weirdos have to be here!"Serena growled in annoyance. "I'll make you all greet for being here!"

Suddenly a green blast hit Serena sending her to hit the floor and drop the sword.

Serena winced as she was falling to unconsciousness.

The last vision Serena saw was a pair of glowing green eyes staring at her before darkness consumed her.

Serena is captured!
