I find myself restlessly pacing outside the cafeteria, vigilantly watching for Tobias to appear. I haven't seen him since he left me wallowing in misery outside the fear landscape room nearly three hours ago. I've searched everywhere I knew to look … the apartment, his office, the training room, the chasm, the bar. I even made a quick trip to the Navy Pier to see if he left the compound. I couldn't find him anywhere. I even considered searching for Oliver to see if maybe Tobias followed him but I didn't want to encourage his weird fixation.
While I was trying to hunt down Tobias, Shauna, James, and Will went over the final simulation data and compiled the ranking list for tonight's Choosing Ceremony and finished assigning the initiates their apartments. Of course, they witnessed Oliver's simulation and Tobias' reaction, so the three of them stepped up without having to be asked so there would be no delay in the process. I don't know what we would do without them.
I'm still very confused about everything that transpired in the fear landscape room. I asked Christina to explain Oliver's simulation once I pulled myself together but she couldn't tell me much since she'd never actually watched it. She'd only heard about it secondhand from Brody and Ana, but apparently his sim is quite explicit, which pisses me off and freaks me out. I don't blame Tobias for his reaction. I just wish he hadn't shut me out. We work much better as a team. It hurt when he wouldn't even look at me, but I tried to put myself in his shoes. If that had been the bitch having simulation sex with my husband, and I had to witness it, I would have done the same thing, except I doubt anyone could have been able to hold me back from killing her. I just want to make sure that this doesn't damage our marriage.
"Hey, Tris," Zeke calls out, making me jump. I'm concentrating so hard on searching the crowd for Tobias' face I didn't even see him approach.
"Hi, Zeke," I murmur, not taking my eyes off the crowd.
"Hey," he says, garnering my attention and I turn to look at him. I'm surprised by his concerned look. Just seconds ago he sounded so jovial. "What's going on?"
"Have you talked to Four since lunch?" I ask.
"I called him a couple times but he never picked up," he says. "Why?"
"I'm really surprised you haven't heard," I mutter and then I tell him what I can about what happened in Oliver's simulation this afternoon and Tobias' reaction.
"That explains why he never got back to me," he says, his brows furrowed.
"What did you need to tell him?" I ask.
"We had a sighting of Shauna's dad this afternoon," he says. "He was dressed in Dauntless colors and tried coming in the garage with the changing guard but something scared him off?"
"Any idea what?"
"No," he says shaking his head. "I was going to have Four take a look at the video and see if he saw something we overlooked."
"Can you send the video to me?" I ask. "Once I finally find him, I'll be sure to show it to him."
"Sure," he says as he fishes his phone out of his pocket. "How long have you been looking for him?"
"I gave him an hour since he told me he needed some time, and then I went looking for him. I've searched everywhere. There's been no sign of him."
"Did you try the chasm?" I nod. He rattles off several other places I already checked and then he asks, "What about the net room? Did you try there?"
"No, I never thought about that," I say but immediately know it's a great idea. It's isolated and if Tobias needed time alone, he'd have it there. "Thanks. That might just be where he's at." I turn to go but Zeke gently grabs my arm, stopping me in my tracks.
"It sounds like he doesn't want to be found yet," Zeke softly says. "We both know how realistic fear simulations are. I wouldn't have wanted to watch that, especially when it involved my wife."
"This is killing me, Zeke," I say with a sigh. "He wouldn't even look at me."
"Let him work through his feelings in his own time, Tris," he says, pulling me into a hug. Even though they aren't the arms I want around me, I melt into his embrace. "He'll find you when he's ready."
"I know you're right but I don't have to like it," I say.
"Hey, have you eaten?" he asks as he releases me.
"I'm not hungry."
"You need to eat for the twins, Tris," he says.
"You're right but I'm still not hungry."
"Come on. It's my treat," he says with a face-splitting grin. I shake my head and roll my eyes but manage a small smile. He leads me into the cafeteria, to our table. "Sit down and I'll get you something to eat. Anything sound good?"
"Just something light," I softly say. "Thanks, Zeke." I slide into my place at the table and immediately look towards the door but there's still no sign of Tobias.
"I'm sorry, Tris," Ana says. "We should have said something about Oliver."
"Yeah, you should have," I say, turning to look at her. "Why didn't you, Ana?"
"After talking it over with Uriah and Christina and taking into consideration past simulations, we really didn't think it was that big of a deal," she says. "But the way he was behaving this afternoon changed my opinion. He's such a strange guy anyway but he wasn't acting like himself. I've never seen him that way before."
"Yeah, I noticed that, too," I say. "We'll talk about it later."
"Okay," she says.
"Here you go," Zeke says as he puts a tray in front of me. "Chicken noodle soup and a turkey and Swiss sandwich."
"Thanks," I say as my stomach growls.
"Guess you are hungry, huh?" he laughs.
"Yeah, I guess." I block out the chatter around me and eat my supper. Every once in a while I glance towards the entrance looking for Tobias to no avail. I pull out my phone to check the time and am disappointed when there are no new messages. It's nearly time to introduce the new class of Dauntless members, and I can't believe he's not here yet. It's not like him to shirk his responsibility.
"Hey," James says as he sits down beside me. "I just got a text from Four. He wants us to do the Choosing Ceremony without him."
"Did he say where he is?" I ask.
"No," he says. "He just said to go on without him." He pulls out his phone and shows me the screen.
"Can you manage without me, too?" I ask.
"Yeah," he says. "We'll be fine. Go find him."
"Thanks, James," I say. I give him a quick hug, dump my trash, and head out into the Pit. I practically sprint to the net room door and am disappointed when I find it locked. "Damn it!" All movement and chatter stops, and I feel all eyes land on me. I drop my head to the door and take a few deep, cleansing breaths. I will not break down in front of half of Dauntless.
"Tris, is there something I can help you with?" I glance to the right and find a maintenance worker standing beside me.
"Do you happen to have a master key on you?" I ask, hopefully.
"I don't but I could radio for one," the helpful woman says.
"I would appreciate it," I say. "I don't want to have to go all the way to the Pire and back."
"That's no problem," she says, pulling a walkie-talkie off her belt. She radios her message out then turns back to me. "Eugenia is on her way. She's in the cafeteria, so it won't take her long to get here."
"Thank you," I say. "I'm sorry, I don't know your name."
"It's Margo," she says. "And I'm glad I could help. You sounded frustrated." That's an understatement but there's no need for her to know that.
"Forgot my keys this morning," I say with a shrug.
"I've been there," she says with a chuckle. I see Eugenia coming across the Pit floor, and I will her to move a little faster. I don't even realize I'm impatiently tapping my foot until she steps up beside me.
"Thanks, Eugenia," I say after she opens the door. "Please make sure you lock it behind me. I appreciate it." I don't wait to make sure she follows my instructions. Maybe I should but I'm in too much of a hurry to see if Tobias is at the net. If he's not there, I don't know where else to look. I practically sprint through the dark, damp tunnel until I see the literal light at the end of the tunnel. I hold my breath as I barrel into the room. It doesn't take me long to find my husband. He's sitting on the end of the platform beneath the net, his head in his palms.
"How did you find me?" he asks, never looking up as I approach him.
"The process of elimination," I say. I must remember to kiss Zeke the next time I see him. Unfortunately, Tobias doesn't move a muscle as I sit down next to him, and I start to doubt hunting him down. "I wish you would talk to me."
"I'm not ready," he says, his voice flat. I rest my head on his shoulder, and I cringe when he stiffens.
"I didn't do anything wrong," I finally say after too many quiet moments, "but if you still need time alone, I'll give it to you." I press my lips to his temple, squeeze my eyes shut in an attempt stop forming tears, and kiss him.
"I love you, Tobias Eaton. I'll be at home when you can look at me again." I'm halfway to the Pit when I hear pounding footsteps behind me.
"Tris, wait," Tobias calls out. I stop and he groans when I turn and he sees tears wetting my cheeks. "Love, I'm so sorry." I willingly go into his outstretched arms. I've been craving his touch since he walked away from me this afternoon. We stand close, holding each other tightly, for what seems like hours. "You're absolutely right. You didn't do anything wrong. I shouldn't have ran off like that. Can you ever forgive me?"
"There's nothing to forgive, baby," I say, looking up at him. "I would have wanted time too if that had happened to me. I need you to do something for me."
"Anything."
"Tell me about his sim," I say and he immediately shakes his head. "Tobias, I may not want to know the details, but I need to know."
"Alright," he says with a sigh. "Let's go back to the platform. It'll be easier to talk there than at home." He's right about that. If the kids were to see us, we wouldn't have a second of peace until they fell asleep. He releases me, takes my hand, and leads me back towards the net. We sit side by side on the raised platform, and I patiently wait for him to explain what it was he saw.
"His simulation started out like every other one I've ever seen," he finally says as he stares straight ahead into the dark. "It contained normal fears until what I assume was his last one. I didn't understand what was going on at first because it didn't play out like a fear. Well, not like any fear I've ever seen." He goes quiet again.
"What did you see?" I whisper.
"You left me for him. You left me and the kids."
"I would never do that."
"I know but it doesn't make what I witnessed seem any less real," he says. I can hear deep pain with each word. "In his world, you were very happy." He takes a deep breath and slowly blows it out. "He came home from work. He was an ambassador to Candor, I think. I take it you were a housewife. You had dinner waiting for him. You greeted him with a kiss. That's when I knew something was really off. After you ate, I watched as he carried you into the bedroom and…" His voice trails off but I know what he saw, and my heart aches for him. I put my arm around his waist and rest my head against his arm. "When you were done," he clears his throat, "you had a conversation. He apparently had seen you talking to me earlier in the day and was terrified you were going to go back to me. By then I'd had enough. I was so livid I couldn't take any more. I disconnected myself from the simulation, and you know the rest."
"I'm sorry you had to see that," I say, still trying to work this out. "That is so stupid. How is this type of fear even possible? I know our fears aren't always logical but his greatest fear is based on an improbability, a fantasy."
"I have no idea," he says. He finally turns my way, and he looks miserable.
"Do you think he's dangerous, Tobias?"
"I don't know. You know I'm not his biggest fan. I have to admit I was impressed by how hard he worked to finish phase one and then how well he did in phase two but now, I don't know what to think. He obviously has issues," he says, shaking his head. "I need to watch his practice sims to get a better idea of what we're dealing with."
"Absolutely not, Tobias Eaton," I forcefully say. "Have James, Will, or Shauna do it. If I wasn't pregnant, I'd do it myself, but I don't want you thinking about what you saw this afternoon for one more minute let alone having to witness it again and again."
"It will be okay."
"No, it won't," I scream. "You wouldn't look at me up until half an hour ago. I can still see the pain in your eyes. I understand how those damn simulations work. Your mind is telling you I cheated, that I left you, that I left our kids. Even though you know in your heart I would never do those things," I press my hand against his chest and stare deeply into his eyes, "your brain knows what it saw. It's telling you I cheated. If you watch every practice, you'll never look at me again." He hangs his head. "You've got to promise you'll never go into one of his simulations again."
"You're right. I promise. I'll have a meeting with Brody and Ana. They owe us an explanation anyway. I can get their takes on him. I'm so sorry, Tris," he says as he brings my hand to his lips and gently kisses my palm. He then laces our fingers together.
"We already talked about this," I say. "There's nothing you have to be sorry for."
"I shouldn't have reacted the way I did," he says. "I know you would never leave me and the kids, especially for him but, fuck, that simulation was so real. It killed me to see that."
"I put myself in your shoes. If that had been the bitch having weird simulation sex with you, I'd have killed her. I'm proud you restrained yourself."
"I want him gone," he growls. "Unfortunately, I don't have a leg to stand on. Since we gave him the ultimatum, he's thrived. If I'm not mistaken, he finished neck in neck with Hector. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he pulled ahead in the rankings."
"We'll just have to watch him," I say.
"Yeah, we will," he says.
"Are we okay?" I ask.
"You tell me," he says. "I'm the one who messed up today."
"You didn't mess up, baby." I thread my fingers into his hair and pull his mouth to mine for a tender kiss but once our lips touch, passion explodes. I crawl into his lap as our lips and tongues clash. His hands glide up and down my back before cupping my butt and pulling me closer. I feel his hardening length between us, and I can't stop myself from grinding against him.
"I need to be inside you," he growls against my mouth. I pull back, panting and gaze into his hooded eyes.
"Baby, we can't. Not here. Zeke's the one who told me to try looking for you here, and he's been trying to get ahold of you this afternoon. I don't want him to catch us in the act again. Once was once too many." He chuckles deeply, which makes my heart sing and my core throb.
"You're damn right about that," he says. "I don't want to let you go though." He rests his head in the crook of my neck and places soft kisses along my shoulder. I continue rubbing against his hard bulge as I hug him tightly, running my fingers through his hair. He groans deeply. "Tris."
"You feel so good," I moan. "Let's go to your old apartment. It's closer than going home, and no one will bother us there."
"That's a fantastic idea." We untangle after another passionate kiss and get to our feet. Hand in hand, we practically fly to the Pit. It doesn't surprise me that it's basically deserted. I bet the auditorium is standing room only for the choosing ceremony.
We can barely keep our hands off each other as we make our way to the familiar hallway that leads to his old apartment. We fall against the door, our lips moving aggressively against each other as Tobias digs in his pocket for the keys. He fumbles them repeatedly before he's able to get the door open. Once I hear the lock click into place, I pull my mouth away from his, leaving us both panting hard. He reaches for me again but I push him away, and he lands on the bed with a bounce, a look of surprise on his face. He quickly sits up but I step out of reach of his roaming hands and start a slow, sensual striptease starting with my shirt and ending with my lacy boy shorts, leaving me only wearing a sexy smile. He mutters a curse under his breath when I step back within his reach.
"You are absolutely perfect," he murmurs before taking my breasts in his large hands. His hot mouth engulfs one nipple, teasing it with his tongue, lips, and teeth, while his fingers torment the other. I wrap my arms around his head and enjoy his undivided attention.
"Oh, God! I need you, baby," I moan lowly. My sex is throbbing almost painfully with each pull of his lips on my aching nipple.
"I want to taste you first," he roughly says, startling me as he pulls me into his lap. He then lies back on the bed and says, "Climb up here, love." I carefully climb up his body and drop a carnal kiss on his waiting lips before putting my knees on either side of his head. He wraps his arms around my thighs and pulls my sex down to his mouth. I brace my hands against the wall and drop my chin to my chest as his tongue works me into a frenzy. He doesn't stop torturing me until his name is bouncing off the walls and I've come twice. He releases my legs and carefully moves me so I can collapse right next to him. I turn and look at him, my chest rising and falling at an impressive rate, and a smile turns up my lips. It's in this instant I realize Tobias is still fully clothed.
"Are you gonna get naked for me, baby?" I ask as I lazily trail a finger down his chest.
"You want me to take my clothes off?" he asks, his eyes shining with love and lust.
"I think you owe me a little striptease," I say with a giggle.
"I do, huh?" He rolls over on top of me, making sure not to put any weight on my abdomen, and kisses me senseless. When he pulls away, I couldn't tell you what my name is. He chuckles at the glazed look in my eyes and climbs off the bed. I slowly roll onto my side, prop my head on my hand, and watch as he returns the favor. He swings his hips, swaying to an imaginary song as he slowly lifts his shirt. Frustration sets in when he only shows me an inch of skin at a time. By the time he finally whips it over his head, I can wait no longer. I impatiently roll off the bed and fall on my knees at his feet. I quickly unbuckle his belt, unsnap his jeans, and rip down the zipper.
"I thought I was supposed to be giving you a show," he says with a chuckle. I can't believe he has the audacity to laugh at me when my whole body is vibrating with need but it abruptly cuts off when I push his jeans past his knees and take his hard length into my mouth. "Oh, hell, Tris." A slew of curse words fly from his lips as I grip his shaft tightly, increase the suction, and take him as far as I can again and again. I gaze up at him when he winds his fingers in my hair and we stare at one another as I worship him with my mouth and tongue.
"Get on the bed, love," he gruffly says when he can take no more. "On your knees. I want you from behind." I release his hard length with a pop and scramble up onto the bed. I get on all fours facing the living room and look back over my shoulder at him. He's bent over, hopping on one foot, trying to get his jeans off over his boots.
"Hurry, baby," I moan, as I move my fingers to my throbbing nubbin, still gazing at him. "I need you so bad." He glances at me, back down at his feet, and then whips his head back up. He watches me, desire dilating his eyes, as I circle my aching bundle of nerves. He doesn't take his eyes off me as he finishes removing his clothing.
"You have no idea how sexy you are right now," he mutters. "I love it when you touch yourself for me." He leans down and places a soft kiss on the small of my back as his hands roam everywhere. "You ready for me, love?" He grips my hip with one hand and slips a finger inside me with the other. He groans. "So wet."
"Hurry, Tobias," I cry out as he thrusts a second finger deep inside me. "Please!" I feel the bed dip as he kneels behind me, never taking his hands off me, and my body shudders with anticipation. After removing his fingers, he glides his hands up and down my back before resting them on my hips. He pulls me back toward him, and we groan at the intimate contact. I arch my back and meet his eyes again. I shimmy my butt against his length and lick my dry lips while staring up into his handsome face. His lids are heavy with lust, and adoration shines from his dilated eyes. I don't care if it's the first time or the thousandth, he's always made me fell wanted, needed, and above all else, loved.
He runs the thick head of his massive length over my sensitive bundle of nerves a few times before slowly sinking into my tight depths, making us both groan. He drapes his body over mine and I feel his ragged breath sweep over the back of my neck as he lets my body acclimate to his. His hands leisurely glide from my hips around to cup my breasts as he slowly pulls back and then, just as slowly, pushes back inside me. He rolls the tight nipples between his thumb and fingers as he repeatedly rocks into me at a measured pace.
"Oh, Tobias," I moan as he hits all the right spots deep inside of me. Our lips meet over my shoulder in a frenzied passion as our pace quickens. I push back, meeting him thrust for thrust. He grunts as he thoroughly loves me, and I moan, groan, and cry out with each of his powerful drives. His fingers continue to work my nipples and breasts until they are swollen and aching as my body rockets towards ecstasy.
"So close," I repeatedly murmur, breathlessly, as my trembling arms give out causing Tobias to still. "Oh, God! Don't stop, baby! I'm so close." He resumes pounding into me at a frenzied pace as I rest my upper body on the mattress taking him deeper than before. He swells and lengthens inside me as my release builds to the point of explosion. I cry out in blissful agony as Tobias gives me one final thrust and explodes deep inside me with a forceful grunt. We collapse in a heap to let our bodies recover from the exertion. After a couple minutes, Tobias pulls me against his chest and I sigh.
"I love you so much," he murmurs against my ear.
"I love you, too," I say.
"Hey, you said something earlier I was wondering about."
"What was that?" I ask, rolling to face him.
"You said Zeke was looking for me," he says.
"Oh, yeah. He said there was a sighting of Terrance Samuels earlier today at the garage. Apparently, something spooked him before he came into the compound though. Zeke wanted you to look at the security footage to see if you could figure out who or what it was. He sent it to my phone. I'll show it to you." I go to get up but he wraps his arms around me, holding me still.
"We'll deal with that tomorrow," he says. "I just want to concentrate on us right now."
"I like the sound of that," I say. We fall against each other and within minutes we're making love again.
