Lush greenery rustled like dry leaves, moved by a warm breeze that descended on the valley from the heavens. The repugnant smell of the river to the right only served to increase the unending feeling of nausea. It was much larger than the one in the cave, yet it shared the same luminescence. No sound could be heard from it, even when water splashed against the moss-covered rocks. There was a wooden bridge that led to the other side, a forest way more dense than it had the right to be, like a wall made of plants.
A human figure sat on one of the rocks, back turned. Though it had womanly features, it was hard to figure out what exactly it was, prompting Braylon to draw out Unforgiven. It seemingly cared not for him or his presence, as it sang a song he never heard before. Even the voice was that of a woman, and it was stunning. He was sure no woman he knew could ever sing with such beauty. After making another step, it stopped, then turned around as if frightened, showing its true nature, that of a Siren.*
It was unconcerned rather than frightened, as if he was expected to be there. The Siren slapped its tail against the rock and dived into the river. Careful not to fall into a trap, he reached the bridge. Halfway to the other side, the Siren returned, now with a friend, both armed with bows and arrows.
(Andrew Hulshult – Deep Into the Code)
Braylon fired two bullets, but the Sirens were faster, diving into the water to avoid danger. He ran into the forest before they resurfaced.
Razor-sharp foliage brushed against his skin, nibbling on the Shield battery until it was depleted. Dozens of cuts appeared on his arms and face as he tried to push a numberless amount of branches away, thinning out moment by moment until there were none left. By the time he got out of the floral trap, his skin burned and itched, coated in blood.
The wall of plants formed a circle, a small arena-like setting under the red sky. A pine tree stood in front of him. It shook, shrieked, then ran away with its legs that grew out of the trunk, leaving behind a small creature the size of a child.
Compared to other monsters, this one could barely fit into the environment simply because its appearance was the last thing that could be expected from such a place. Its wings were that of a butterfly, full of vibrant colors, unfit to hold their owner, a giggling female kid with green eyes and blond hair. Several red, blue, pink and yellow orbs flew around its seemingly frail body, covered only by a dress made of silk. It was a fairy, the queen of fairies. Titania.**
"Teehee… another one comes to play. Come out, my dear friends! Time to play!"
The first creature to surge from the shadows of the surrounding flora was a sheep that tried to walk on its hind legs, with one of them replaced by a malformed human foot. It had humanoid arms covered in wool and a Human-shaped skull, with sheep ears and snout. A lab experiment gone wrong; an Exalted animal.***
As the Exalted sheep shambled like a drunkard, more of its kind appeared behind it, all as equally demented and abominable, despite being of different species of fauna from both Earth and alien planets. Out of all solutions, only one was efficient enough: carpet bombing the whole group. Leviathan in its grenade launcher mode could do that.
Each grenade fired from the barrel landed between two or more Exalted, exploding only seconds later like bombs from a mortar. The earth erupted along with them, leaving bloodied remains and the smell of death. Those hidden behind trees fled after the carnage. Titania twisted its face into a scowl.
"You hurt my friends! Now you must pay!"
She placed two fingers inside her mouth and whistled. The wall of plants northeast split in half, allowing a humanoid with the features of a tiger to step in. Unlike the Exalted, this one was thought to be the final metamorphosis, the end result of a transformation. Its hind legs still had paws, although shaped to mimic Human feet, just like its "arms" had "fingers". The size and musculature rivaled that of a Baron of Hell. ****
"Go get him, Tigerman!"
Braylon had no fear, for his Leviathan could still be useful. Turning it back into a rocket launcher, he fired a rocket, striking the Tigerman who shook and fell, not killed but heavily injured.
"Nnggh!" Titania screamed through her teeth, "No! No! No! Stand up! I command you!"
A wave of her little fingers formed an a crimson aura around the Tigerman, who jumped to its legs as if it acquired several doses of steroids. New flesh covered the old wound. Its muscles bulged and its size increased. The color of the fur grew from orange and white to black.
"Here we go..."
"Now go and show him who is the toughest around here!"
When the new and improved Tigerman roared in response, the trees shook, with some of them growing legs and running away, much like the pine tree. Braylon could see the river down the newly-formed path, to the northwest. He had to go through the bastard and the child first…
Leviathan went off again. Three rockets struck the approaching Hellspawn, with a fourth hitting the head. Even then, it didn't fall, but continued its rush until it could jump towards Braylon, tackling him with bone-shattering strength. It almost depleted Bumblebee in one hit.
As the claws obliterated what little defenses the Shield could give, Braylon dropped Leviathan, opting for Orphan Maker, and replied with an attack of his own, but not before being impaled by another set of claws, really close to the vital spots.
"Hammer… Fist… Overdrive!" he spat through coughs and blood, hitting the offending hand with his own, breaking bones that pierced the skin. The Tigerman roared in pain, jumping backwards. Instead of reloading, Braylon materialized a third gun; Kalibak's Heartslayer. A wicked smile appeared on his face when he applied pressure to the trigger, watching as the monster's chest burst open. It died on the spot.
"Bwaaaah! You meanie!" cried the queen of fairies, "Stay away from me!"
Titania flew off, towards the newly open path. Braylon decided to follow her out of the supposed trap. Three Exalted stood on a wooden bridge, accompanied by two Sirens who sat near some rocks and a Gorgon who waited on the other side of the river. Titania looked back, stuck her tongue out and flew away, following the river until she disappeared inside the mouth of a giant horned skull that served as a tunnel. Right where the purple light pointed at.
Heartslayer in one hand, Unforgiven in another, the Vault Hunter continued his pursuit. A bullet hit one of the Sirens in the throat. The heart of the other one imploded, with her blood gushing out of every orifice. The Exalted cow, fox and owl screamed in response, their distorted cries mixing into a stream of unintelligible noises.
The owl was the first to die, as it had aerial advantage. Shot two times, it crushed on top of the bridge's fence then rolled into the water, leaving only brown feathers as proof that it had ever been there. The other two miscreations were gunned down with Ajax's Spear, their bodies collapsing into piles of gore and red paste.
It only took a step for the Gorgon to slide on top of the bridge, using her petrifying gaze attack. Ajax's Spear was used on it, not to kill, but to distract from the real attack; a Hive Bomb with Shock stingers. A swarm of tiny robots flew around their target, zapping it with enough electricity to incapacitate a Human. Naturally, it only served to rile the Hellspawn, though it did leave black spots all over the skin. Braylon materialized Holo Sabre, cut her head off and kicked it into the river below.
The shore was full of small rock or skull piles, scattered without deeper meaning or motive. A bat-like thing with six rabbit ears stared at him with its deep blue eyes from one of the rock piles, until it decided he was uninteresting and flew away. With the skull cave inching closer and closer, the dirt slowly turned into black sand, where empty silver shells and skeletons resembling fish lay by the dozen.
A boat stood near a coffin made of stone, along with some vases and wooden trinkets of unknown origin. The coffin was located near a half-sunken cabin that smelled of death and saltwater. As soon as he approached the boat, a flock of Harpies descended from the skies. A Tigerman also teleported in the vicinity. Braylon ran into the cabin, knocking down the door that was barely holding on its hinges.
"Get out! Out!"
A Returner dwelt in there; a reanimated skeleton inside an apparition in a costume of a pirate. Braylon materialized Orphan Maker and destroyed it with one shot at close proximity. With another pair of shells, he banished the Condemned that came out.
Outside, the Harpies surrounded the cabin, scratching with their talons and screeching bloody murder. The Tigerman grabbed a vase and flung it at the wooden wall. The vase broke, but the wall held on.
It then decided to throw the coffin.
"Shit!"
The Vault Hunter dived into the cold, glowing water of the river, escaping from the cabin through a hole in the floor as the coffin destroyed what little remained of the building, as if an asteroid had fallen on it.
He chose to stick to the riverbed, swimming until his lungs couldn't resist without air. It wasn't pretty or easy, for he stumbled into Humans and aliens chained to the walls, some as corpses while others as suffering souls.
A Siren spotted him. Guns were useless underwater. It had the upper advantage.
Ice cold fingers coiled around his legs and arms in an instant. Dozens of sharp teeth bit down on his body. Its sisters were also present. Bumblebee wouldn't last long under such conditions, and swimming to the surface was nothing more than fantasy. One Siren in particular scratched its teeth against the surfac e of the PDA, like a dog chewing on its toy.
Holo Sabre materialized through its head and vanished again, leaving a thin slit on the skull. The one that held Braylon's left hand tightened its grip, shaken after what it just saw. The water reddened.
Twisting his arm until it pointed at the lower fish body, the Vault Hunter materialized Holo Sabre again. Screams came out as gargles as the holographic tool moved up and down, gutting the Siren. Though still living, its grip was now laughable, allowing him to repeat the trick on the monster that hugged its left leg. The wounded one swum away.
Two more Sirens tried to drag him deeper. He used the free leg to propel himself upward until his hands could grab at whatever was above the surface. It was something hard, a rock of sorts. Repeating the trick with the Holo Sabre once more, he stabbed a Siren between its breasts, freeing his other hand. His Shield was depleted.
The last one climbed up his body until they could meet face to face. It was perfectly Human, except for the teeth, which were more like tiny spikes. They grabbed each other's head. It scratched both of his cheeks. He dug his thumbs in its eyes, kicked it away and emerged.
He was inside of… something. It resembled a cave, but the walls were too regular to be one. Rock formations with tiny blue crystals were numerous and provided a light source. Weak as it was, it served to add another layer of ominousness. Anything far from two meters of the crystals was shrouded in darkness. There was no way to tell which way was which or how big the place was.
Braylon, almost instinctively up to that point, drew out Fornax. Ajax's Spear bore too much risk in such an environment, where everyone and everything could come out to attack him. Following the purple light, he stumbled upon a pickaxe, buried in a rock. Few meters ahead, he could hear someone grumbling as they repeatedly hit something. He inched closer to the noise.
The light from his PDA shone upon a haggish creature, a short old man with long teeth, skinny fingers armed with talons, blood red eyes and dirty hair. With a pickaxe in its hand and a red cap on its head, the Redcap guffawed, retreating into the darkness.*****
Giggles resounded all around Braylon. The pattering of feet made him spun around, only to stare directly at a head of a pickaxe that was about to meet with his chest. He strafed backwards, narrowly avoiding a blow that, without the Shield, would be deadly. One of them emerged to his left. Plasma melted its face away, sealing the screaming mouth shut.
A cheerful laughter from behind made him jump-roll forward. Picking up the tool of the fallen Redcap, his eyes searched the area for the would-be murderer. His insticts, as well as ears, told him to turn around. Roaring, the Vault Hunter swung the pickaxe at a hunderd and eighty degrees, burying the tip to the side of the monster's head, fixing both to a rock. The Redcap gurgled blood, trembling helplessly until it got a foot to the face.
"It's pointless to keep fighting them! Better be on my way!"
Braylon ran where the purple light told him to, leaving behind his euphoric enemies. One Redcap jumped from the shadows, only to be blasted away by Fornax. Its brother-clone got the longer end of the stick however, as its attack made Braylon drop his rifle. The psychotic dwarf grinned as it swung again. Braylon jumped backwards and grabbed the pickaxe. He wrestled the tool out of its hands and brought it down on the Redcap's head, dropping the corpse with a kick.
Several minutes later, a new sound haunted him. Titania's voice echoed through the cavern, presenting itself in all of its abominable glory. The light emanated by its tiny frame, and by the tiny orbs around it, served to illuminate a good portion of the surrounding environment.
"You harmed my friends for far too long! Villain, you are about to meet your toughest opponent yet! Go and squash him like a bug, Gorgias the Manticore!"
"What? Aaaah!"
The ground beneath him split open. Braylon was falling. A long, ark, empty fall through nothingness, until he dropped in spacious den, one resembling a circular temple, made entirely of large stone bricks.
"Argh! Fuck! That damn brat…!"
"Grrrrrr…"
Every single hair of his body turned into a needle. He wasn't alone, and what he heard was anything but a meowling kitten. The growling was distorted, amplified, as if a dog tried to voice itself through the throat of a giant feline. His head turned sideways, and that's when things took a turn for the worse.
An adult male lion would pale in comparison to the monstrosity he stared at. Between the sizes of a truck and a car, this feline did, in fact, resemble a lion with dark red mane and golden fur. It had two giant wings and a tail that ended in a lump covered in spikes. The head was the epitome of uncanny valley, resembling a shaved human's with a snout-like protrusion, pointy ears and milk-white eyes. The Manticore parted its lips, revealing two rows of teeth, one Human and other animal. ******
"Ho-ly shit…"
(Blasphemous – Dame Tu Tormento)
Braylon sprung forward to avoid a rain of spikes shot from the tail. As soon as he moved, the beast flapped its wings, jumped, and landed with one of its paws on the Vault Hunter, fingernail-like claws scratching at his chest. He materialized Orphan Maker and fired at the descending head. The Manticore howled, shaking its head but refusing to let go. Braylon reloaded and fired at the leg, cutting the skin. Only then could he slide under its belly.
"Overdrive Gatling!"
In any other case, the streams of superpowered punches would tear the unfortunate victim to shreds. But here, his fists hit the Manticore's underside enough to leave bruises, toppling it over like a tree. The resulting thud shook the lair, forming a crack on the nearby wall, crumbling until it became a tiny hole for the Exalted to come through. The Manticore stood up, albeit stunned by the earlier attack.
"You! Fuck off!"
Humanoid dogs, deformed cows and abominable pigs marched relentlessly, snarling and frothing. Unforgiven and Orphan Maker fired and fired some more, destroying heads and butchering bodies. Resistance was pathetic, strategies were nonexistent. They walked or ran, hoping to scratch or bite him.
Then the Manticore attacked.
Its cavernous mouth opened, spewing electricity shaped into a beam. A lightning breath, in short. Braylon strafed sideways twice. All of the living Exalted were swallowed by a bright blue light. Only their skeletons remained, picked clean of any meat they held together. A magical lightning breath.
The leathery wings of the Manticore unfurled, creating a powerful storm with just three flaps, throwing the Vault Hunter at a broken pillar. It pounced, smashing the pillar with its head. Most of the damage was absorbed by the Shield before the battery was depleted, but Braylon still felt the strength that knocked the breath out of his lungs. His chest hurt, worryingly so. It was a miracle that he survived the way he did.
Still, his PDA refused its master's defeat, pumping his body with potent drugs to keep him going. It has been doing that ever since he came to Hell, which is why he never needed to rest or eat. It was going to be a bitch to deal with on Remnant, but so far his body showed no signs of illness or side effects. Probably Hell's doing.
It pounced again, this time trying to bite him in half. He rolled away and jumped, raising his right hand.
"Knifehand Strike Overdrive!"
A precise strike to the forehead cracked the Manticore's skull; a wound so deep, its brain became exposed. Rivers of blood trickled down its face, giving it an even more disturbing appearance. Even that was not enough to kill it, however. The giant Hellspawn, its head facing the floor, began retreating to the other side of the lair, not once moving its eyes away from the Vault Hunter. He heard soft growls, although he couldn't guess the nature behind them.
"Is it… scared?"
It sat down, tail covering its legs, refusing to do anything other than observing him. When the scene dragged on for some time, Titania decided to appear to shake things up.
"What have you done? You turned Gorgias into a scaredy-cat! You are the real monster here, Human!"
"Look who's talking! Weren't you Human once?"
"Yuck! As if!"
"You certainly are annoying like a Human brat."
"What?! How dare you!" Titania waved its hands angrily, "Enough! I refuse to tolerate you anymore! Now you are about to see the true power of the Queen of Fairies!"
Titania flew on top of the Manticore, spread its arms and began chanting. White lightning coursed through its body, striking and enveloping the beast in an egg-shaped cocoon of white light. With the ritual complete, Titania flew to a corner of the lair where she could observe the battle that was about to happen.
An improved Manticore rose from the cocoon, one that could stand upright and whose front legs developed into hands. Its leathery wings grew white plumage, appearing to be even larger than before. In addition to improving the old, it also grew new appendages, such as horns and an additional pair of hands near the hips, smaller than their original counterpart. The mane turned white and grew longer, while the fur turned dark red. The lump at the end of the tail turned into a mouth covered in black quills. It was a sight that could instill fear and awe even in the heroes of ancient myths.*******
"Mother… fucker..."
Braylon seethed through his teeth. The old wounds were gone, like they were never there, while he wasn't in an excellent physical state. Up to then he relied on the Holy Overdrive, but there was no available fodder to charge that special effect. Gorgias slapped the ground with its tail, forming a sinkhole for a new nuisance: Demongs. To make things worse, Titania summoned two Tigermen to aid its friend.
"Man, this went from zero to shitfest real quick. What can I do here?!"
(Blasphemous – Ten Piedad)
A roar from Gorgias announced the start of the battle. Braylon materialized Leviathan, cursing his luck for being low on ammo. The only way to acquire more was to kill one of the monsters in a gruesome way and that, at the moment, was way too risky to even think of trying. All of them were powerhouses that required extreme carefulness. His sight then fell on Titania, who seemed the weakest of the bunch. A plan started forming in his head.
Gorgias walked slower than before. Braylon guessed it was because it knew it was the strongest and it really had no reason to rush into what would eventually happen if he failed to secure his ass. The rest of the Hellspawn was on the move as well.
He shot Gorgias with two rockets. They exploded, tearing small chunks of its flesh, but Gorgias didn't seem to mind, summoning a thunder ball in each hand. It fused them together and threw it gently. Braylon ran as fast as he could, scolding himself for not being even faster. He didn't see the impact, but he felt it when a shock wave hit his back, preceded by a loud boom and followed by an electric discharge that spread like wildfire. One of the Demongs who stood in the epicentre when the thuderball fell was instantly vaporized, while others were midly electrocuted. Only one of them, a pissed off Tigerman, turned around and charged at Gorgias, but was devoured by its tail.
As for Braylon, he was in a really bad situation. Not only did his Shield's battery drop down in a second, the shock effect continued for a few seconds more, due to him being unable to completely leave the area of effect in time. During that time, his muscles stiffened and he dropped like a rock. The pain was slightly worse than the one caused by Shock guns. What hurt him more was the fact that he was loosing precious time there, while the monsters were free to close in for the kill.
When the effect dropped in power, the Vault Hunter rolled and decided to throw two Pandemic grenades at the Hellspawn, to buy some time for him to regain his strength. It worked on the smaller heavy hitters, not so much on Gorgias, who looked like it was preparing to unleash another devastating attack, one including its tail.
Titania was close, enough for him to to develop his plan. He fired the last rocket at the Queen of Fairies. It, in turn, raised an energy barrier around itself, but it was either too weak or heavily improvised, because when the rocket struck, it crashed head-first to the floor.
A thought found its place inside his mind when he grabbed Titania by the right leg. His salvation relied on murdering a monster in the form of a child. It was a monster, sure, but childlike nonetheless. Didn't stop him from whipping it against the floor like a carpet until all that remained was a bloody, mangled mess. The orbs he desired so much came after the murder, supplying him with more ammunition for the fight as well as restoring his physical health.
And just in time too, for Gorgias spat a stream of vomit-colored sludge from its tail. Getting in touch with that substance meant having one's face molten off, as it happened to the remaining Tigerman, who writhed in pain until its body collapsed into the gooey liquid.
One attempt wasn't enough, so Gorgias tried again. Braylon circled around the creature, avoiding a grisly fate. He retaliated with Leviathan. Four rockets simultaneously hit the lower right arm, ripping it off from the hip. The beast snarled and furrowed its brows, holding the fresh stump to prevent blood loss. Its lower left hand exploded moments later from a three-rocket burst, its remains dangling at Gorgias' side. The rest of the clip was unloaded in its chest as it rumbled to the heavens, patches of fur turning black from the sheer firepower of the onslaught.
But it was when Gorgias hunched and stalked that Braylon realized how dire the situation had become. It began spraying acidic goo non-stop. Braylon was safe only because he kept strafing, running and jumping, but the same couldn't be said for the lair, which began suffering major structural damage from having way too many molten holes. To avoid a cave in, he had to remove the problem.
Which is why he pulled out the Nukem.
The mini-nuke turned Gorgias' blood-drenched chest into a fleshy crater, almost knocking over the giant beast. All muscle, fur and skin, from knees to the face, was disintegrated. But it was not dead yet, for its heart was still beating behind its exposed skeleton, so Braylon materialized the Heartslayer and used its magic properties to shatter it. Gorgias gasped, its flesh crumbling into nothingness rather than rotting away, leaving only a skeleton that shattered as soon as it fell.
With the death of the last Hellspawn, there was nothing else that challenged the Vault Hunter. He was now free to wander as he pleased. But where, exactly? The lair lacked an exit, or it did until Gorgias' fall. Braylon found a small tunnel located on the northeastern side, near a pile of rib cages. He had to crouch to fit in.
The tunnel was rocky, warm and damp. Its irregular, sharp texture scratched against the skin of his palms, using his hands as guidance in the darkness. Over time, the irregular stone became perfectly smooth to the touch, though it did not change its remaining physical properties. The orange pinprick of light in the distance was his way to freedom, although not his way to Blake, as the light that showed him the true path was gone.
Ghastly cries could be heard in the distance…
Aaaand here we go! Newest chapter is out! I apologize for not being able to update sooner. Problems with my computer and new projects increased the time it required me to write this, even more so than I thought. We are slowly approaching the 2nd anniversary of me writing this story, which makes me happy, because I have every single intention of finishing it. How much time it will take, that I can't tell. Maybe three or even five years. But it will be done. Unless I die of course!
These new projects are rewriting some older chapters and a new story. The former goes well so far, with the first chapter already completed. I will try to rewrite few more chapters, but I guarantee nothing. The latter is a new story, a Doom-only story called "Doom: Redemption Denied". You can check it out on Spacebattles or on the Archive of Our Own. No, I do not know when will I put it on this site.
Now comes the "secret" map I was talking about. I cannot write its name, because I want to keep it a secret until its release.
Also, I watched the first few episodes of the newest Volume and… meh. Nothing too special really. I dunno. We'll see how it goes.
PDA Biopedia:
*Entry #136: Siren
Type: Hellspawn
Faction: Legions of Hell
Description: "Creatures that take the form of an attractive female capable of singing with an enchanted voice, used to lure mortals to their doom. To keep the act, a Siren will most often act neutral until it can get a perfect chance to attack, unless provoked first that is. They are not so defenseless, as they can use primitive weapons like bows to hit their targets from a distance."
**Entry #137: Titania, Queen of Fairies
Type: Demonic Corruption - Hero
Faction: Legions of Hell
Description: "The queen of all Fairies, friendly beings who dwell in the wilderness. I do not know the reason for her fall, but it pains my heart. Despite her appearance, and her personality, she is a very old entity with truly fearsome powers, such as the ability to attract beasts and affect their behavior."
***Entry #138: Exalted
Type: Demonic Corruption - Hellspawn
Faction: Legions of Hell
Description: "I explained the nature of the Exalted before; closest thing to the immortal state a mortal being can reach. Unkillable unless killed off in Hell, othewrwise they come back or can even be reanimated. Should the transformation process be applied on the common wildlife, the results will be the same as the ones you just saw: hideous, mindless monstrosities with rage in their hearts. Another group of Exalted are known as Demonoids, but those are another story."
****Entry #139: Tigerman
Type: Hellspawn
Faction: Legions of Hell
Description: "One of the few types of monsters who are capable of speech, by mimicking the voice patterns of mortals. The Tigermen are unlike the rest of their heretical brethren, for they can form tribes, travel in groups or alone, wield weapons, form their own culture, elect a leader and become skilled warriors. That will happen only if they share a world with mortals, otherwise they become feral."
*****Entry #140: Redcap
Type: Hellspawn
Faction: Legions of Hell
Description: "Malevolent Hellspawn with a fixation for living underground and mining precious metals. There is a purpose in that behavior, however, for it is used by my brothers as a method to gather resources while they, or their creations, wage war. A Redcap is a natural geologist and a mineral expert for this very purpose. They are also vicious murderers, and will often use every filthy trick they know to kill their foe."
******Entry #141: Gorgias the Manticore
Type: Hellspawn - Hero
Faction: Legions of Hell
Description: "In ancient times, many heroes created by Father fought and slayed a lot of monsters. These monsters were used to spread destruction, conquering land after land with their physical strength, their sorcery, or even their abilities to create diseases. Their names were erased from history, just like every proof of their existence. Some shared that same fate, but were revived or remade time and time again. The Manticore is one such example, seemingly because of its utter usefulness in combat. If there is one, I am sure there will be more. Not something I am looking forward to."
*******Entry #142: Majestic Beast Gorgias
Type: Hellspawn - Hero
Faction: Legions of Hell
Description: "It is perfectly possible for a Hellspawn to evolve beyond its earlier form through the help of other entities. They retain their rotten personalities, but their powers increase. The evolution is arbitrary. It follows no clear set of rules, unless defined by the one who begins the process. My brothers do not bother with such rituals, but their servants might."
