Chapter 60: Scent of a Hoodie

At the Butterfly Castle...

One of the castle rooms, Marco was packing his things in a duffel bag and let out a sigh.

After Toffee's defeat, Marco, Valen and Adyson stayed in Mewni during the summer to help with the reconstruction and to spend time with Star and Serena.

But the days went by quickly and it was time for Marco, Valen and Adyson to return back to Earth.

Marco picked up the bag and walks out the door.

Mime Girl picked Marco up by his arms and pulled him up to Ruberiot and Foolduke.

"Whoa!"Marco said. "Oh, hey, guys."

"We're gonna miss you, dude."Ruberiot admitted.

"Come on, Marco, can't you stay a little longer?"Foolduke asked.

"Love to, but Earth's calling."Marco reminded.

"All right then."Ruberiot said. "See you on the flip, Marco."

Mime Girl tossed Marco to the bottom of the castle stairs, where Star, Serena, Adyson, Valen, King River and Queen Moon were waiting.

"Whoa! Oof!"Marco sighed and looked at the group. "Well, I, uh...guess this is goodbye."

"And what a pleasure it's been."King River remarked and hugged Marco. "This place won't be the same without you, my lad. But before you go, there's something I want to give you for all you've done for our kingdom. Squire!"

A castle squire approached with a small chest.

King River opened the chest to pull out a long cape and wrapped it around Marco.

"Ta-da!"King River responded.

"Whoa!"Marco chuckled."Cool!"

"Ha-ha! You're like a real live knight now."King River laughed. "Look at you, my boy. In fact, if you ever want to be a knight one day, give me a call."

"Wow."Marco commented. "Thanks, River."

"Take care of yourself back on Earth."Queen Moon said and kissed Marco on the forehead.

"Thanks."Marco answered.

Serena gives Marco a hug.

"Tell your parents I said hi."Serena commented with a smile.

Marco nodded and looked at Star.

Star stared at Marco and they walk up to each other.

"I guess this is it."Marco stated.

"Well...bye."Star replied quietly.

Serena handed a small pink box to Adyson.

"Here Adyson a few mewni baked cookies for you and your friends to enjoy."Serena remarked.

"Whoa, thanks Serena."Adyson said with a sad smile and looked at Valen. "Looks like we're all set, dad."

"Right."Valen agreed with a weak chuckle and took out his dimensional scissors.

Serena gives Valen and Adyson a quick big hug before letting go.

"Don't worry, dad."Serena assured. "I call you and Adyson more often."

"I know you will."Valen replied with a smirk.

Valen opened a dimensional portal with his dimensional scissors, takes one last look at Serena before going in with Adyson.

Marco started walking through the portal as Star had a sad expression.

"Wait, Marco!"Star protested and pulled Marco back. "I need a longer goodbye than that."

"Me, too."Marco answered.

Star hugged Marco and Marco hugged her back.

Then the two friends eventually let go.

"Well, bye...again."Star replied.

"Bye."Marco said.

Marco tried passing Star to get to the portal, but Star accidentally cuts in front of him.

"Huh? Oh, you're going to the portal."Star giggled weakly. "That's this way. Heh-heh."

Marco tried passing Star again, but Star cuts in front of him again several times.

Star and Marco chuckled at each other with nervous smiles.

"Sorry. No, you go right."Star suggested.

"Heh. Sorry, that was me."Marco chuckled.

Star and Marco eventually dance awkwardly around each other until Marco was directly in front of the portal.

Queen Moon and King River look at each other and smile after watching the two dance awkwardly around each other while Serena rolled her eyes and smirked.

"Well, bye."Marco said.

"Bye."Star admitted.

"Bye."Marco stated.

"Okay, Marco."Star commented.

"...Right."Marco finished.

Marco walked through the portal before sticking his head out again.

"Oh, and can you let me know if you see my hoodie anywhere?"Marco asked.

"I told you I haven't seen it."Star replied. "But if I find it, I will send it to you."

"Okay, cool."Marco complemented. "Thanks. Okay. Bye."

Marco leaves and the portal closed.

"I'm...going to my room."Star said sadly and walked up the stairs.

"But sweetie pie, your room's this way."King River corrected.

"It's wherever we want it to be, Uncle River."Serena reminded as she followed Star upstairs.

In the Castle Corridor Upstairs...

Star and Serena walked together in the corridors.

"So what is our new room going to be?"Serena asked.

Star pointed her magic wand at the wall.

"Sparkle Glitter Bomb Expand."Star chanted sadly.

Star created a duplicate version of her and Serena's bedroom loft from when they stayed on Earth.

The two girls entered their bedroom.

Star went on her bed and pulled out Marco's hoodie out from under her mattress.

It was covered in stains and scratches.

"You have his hoodie?"Serena asked.

Star sighed sadly. "It's the only thing I have left of him."

Serena walked over and sat next to her cousin.

Star sniffed on the hoodie deeply and coughed.

"Eugh! Gross, Marco!"Star gagged. "Smells like that time we went on that dimensional school field trip."

"Really?"Serena said, pinching her nose.

"Ugh. Gonna vomit."Star retorted. "Oh and that smells like the one time we got Chinese food after the double feature karate movie."

"Seriously?"Serena questioned in disbelief. "You can really smell that from the hoodie?"

Star sniffed on the hoodie again causing her to cough and gag.

"And that smells like the time we tried to save the Bounce Lounge."Star commented with a smile.

"Hey, girls!"Pony Head greeted.

"Ah!"Star shrieked and hides the hoodie behind her back. "Pony Head!"

"I heard what went down in your kingdom and so I rushed right over as soon as my hair was done."Pony Head replied. "You both know I need to do that."

"Well, a lot has happened, Pony Head."Serena commented as she lied on Star's bed. "Magic is now fully restored in the universe, thanks to Star and I after getting a weapon upload to defeat a jerk face good for nothing. Now we are back here on Mewni and have nothing else to worry about, right Star?"

"Yeah, right..."Star chuckled nervously.

"Wait."Pony Head said narrowing her eyes at Star. "Are you hiding something from me?"

"No."Star scoffed. "This is me, totes normal."

"You better not be keeping secrets from me."Pony Head warned.

"Okay, fine."Star said and revealed Marco's hoodie. "It's Marco's hoodie, okay? Are you happy now?"

"Ooooh! Darn it!"Pony Head gagged in disgust. "That thing smells like feet!"

"I know, but it smells like Marco."Star admitted. "I know I should return it, but I really miss him, and it's the only thing—"

There was sound of a metallic creaking causing Star to notice Serena and Pony Head weren't next to her.

Serena held Marco's hoodie over the opening of the laundry chute with Pony Head floating next to her.

"What the?!"Star shouted. "Hey, what are you doing?!"

"Having this washed before we suffocate from the stench."Serena responded and dropped the hoodie down the chute.

"No!"Star called out as she rushed to the chute.

Star watched as Marco's hoodie disappeared down the chute.

"Hey, girl, you need to get a grip."Pony Head reminded.

"No!"Star snapped and runs out of the room.

Serena and Pony Head follow after Star.

"Star!"Serena said. "Where are you going?"

"To get that hoodie!"Star replied.

Star runs down to the castle laundry room with Serena and Pony Head following after her.

A metal sign over a door reads 'Knight of the Wash'.

Star knocked on the door and Sir Lavabo opened the door window.

"Yes? Ah, Princess Star."Lavabo remarked with a smile.

"Hi, Lavabo."Star greeted.

"I must apologize for your blue dress."Lavabo apologised. "It will not be ready 'til Tuesday."

"I don't care."Star answered. "I'm looking for a red hoodie."

"A hoodie?"Lavabo asked. "Date and time you dropped it off."

"Well, just now, but it was a total accident."Star stated. "It's perfectly clean. I just need it back before it gets washed."

"A clean hoodie? Oh, not to worry."Lavabo assured. "You need the pickup window."

Lavabo pointed over to the laundry's pickup window.

Star walked over to the window and Lavabo opened it.

"Welcome to the pickup window."Lavabo greeted. "How may I be of assistance?"

"Red hoodie."Star said with a frustrated tone.

"Size?"Lavabo asked while holding a clipboard.

"Medium, maybe?"Star suggested.

"Chain mail or metal plate?"Lavabo asked.

"Cotton."Star responded. "It's a hoodie."

"Thread count?"Lavabo asked.

"I don't know!"Star snapped. "I don't count!"

Marco's hoodie falls on a pile of clothes behind Lavabo.

"Wait-wait-wait! There it is!"Star protested. "Right behind you!"

"Double stitch or single?"Lavabo asked.

"It's right behind you!"Star reminded.

"That should be enough information."Lavabo replied. "I'll file this and get back to you within forty-eight hours."

"What?!"Star questioned.

Lavabo closed the window.

"This is all your fault!"Star growled pointing at Serena and Pony Head.

"You're gonna thank us later once you come to your senses!"Pony Head responded.

"I am to my senses!"Star snapped.

"Really?"Serena questioned with her arms folded. "Because it seems your going crazy just for a hoodie."

Lavabo opened the window.

"Good news! I have located your hoodie!"Lavabo admitted with a smile. "Unfortunately, it's filthy and must be washed immediately."

"What? No-no-no-no-no!"Star panicked. "I-I told you, it doesn't need to be washed. Don't bother yourself. Ha-ha."

"I'm sorry, princess, but I must bother myself. It is my duty."Lavabo stated firmly. "I will never forget the moment, as a young boy, and I saw my papimeticulously making sure the royal linen stayed pure, noble, clean and fresh."

"Uh..."Star started.

"And I swore at that very day that I would never let a garment go unwashed."Lavabo commented. "And I have kept that promise for over forty years. Therefore, I will make it my utmost priority that this extremely soil-ed hoodie be washed!"

Lavabo closed the window.

"Okay, well, that is unfortunate."Pony Head stated.

"Well, I am getting hungry."Serena complemented. "Maybe we could get some goblin dogs and-"

"Glitter Whale Battering Ram!"Star chanted.

Star summoned a small winged whale to hurl against the laundry door and it falls to the floor.

"...wait."Serena finished with a frown.

"Girl, what are you doing?"Pony Head asked.

"Trying to get my hoodie back before Lavabo washes it!"Star replied and cracked her neck.

"Are you for real right now?"Pony Head questioned.

"Pile Driver Panda Explosion!"Star chanted.

Star blowed the door door with an explosion of pandas.

Lavabo appeared in a suit of armor holding Marco's hoodie on a staff.

"Through muddled scent and stained shirt piles, the dirt of yesterday shall not be the enemy of tomorrow."Lavabo said. "By the Order of the Wash, this is my promise to my true kingdom."

"Seriously?"Star questioned.

"You know, I'm surprised to say it."Pony Head replied. "But personally, I really do admire this."

"What?"Serena said raising an eyebrow.

"Seriously?!"Star asked in disbelief.

"Star, just let this old dad do his job."Pony Head suggested.

"Yes, I must follow my duty."Lavabo admitted. "Order and rules are always to be followed without fail."

"Okay, calm down though."Pony Head instructed.

"Everyone must always follow the rules all the time, always, forever."Lavabo stated.

"What?! Okay, did you just tell my friend what to do forever?!"Pony Head demanded and looked at the girls. "We are getting back your weird red stink hoodie. We're getting it."

"Wait-wait-wait-wait-wait."Star ordered with a frown. "Like, two seconds ago, you were like—"

"I'm aware of my actions and I'm so sorry for not always having your back and I hope we can move on and grow as the beautiful princesses we are."Pony Head admitted.

"I must uphold my oath!"Lavabo announced and runs away.

"No-no-no-no-no!"Star panicked. "He can't wash the hoodie!"

Star, Serena and Pony Head chased after Lavabo.

"Get back here, Lavabo!"Star ordered.

Lavabo turned a furnace valve, filling the room with steam.

Star groaned in annoyance.

"Can't see anything!"Pony Head said.

"Allow me!"Serena stated and took out her cane. "Shabon Spray Freezing!"

Serena's spell made the steam turn blue and clear away.

Star sees Marco's hoodie moving away with Lavabo.

"Goodbye forever, Star."Marco's voice said softly.

"No-no-no-no-no! No! Don't go!"Star begged. "I won't let you go!"

Star jumped up and blasted magic at Lavabo, hitting his butt.

"Ay!"Lavabo cried out and continued running.

Star chased Lavabo into a waterfall-like area with laundry barrels.

The blonde haired girl blasted Lavabo with magic, but he kept dodging.

"Lavabo! Stop!"Star demanded. "Give me that hoodie!"

"Your Highness, I can't stress enough how badly I am not going to do that."Lavabo said and jumped into a barrel.

Star and Serena jumped into another barrel with Pony Head going next to them.

"Opa!"Lavabo ran out.

Lavabo zip-lines down a clothes line toward a giant spin-cycle washing machine.

Star, Pony Head and Serena go over the waterfall.

"Kitten Pegasus Battle Barrel!"Star chanted.

Star transformed the barrel into a flying kitty-cat barrel.

"Stop!"Star ordered. "You are not washing that hoodie!"

Star cornered Lavabo at the top of the machine.

"Just give up!"Star shouted.

"As long as this body of mine is capable of moving, I shall always move towards my duty."Lavabo said and holds the hoodie over the water.

"Shimmer Soap Tentacle Wave!"Star chanted.

Dirty linens around the laundry room turn into tentacles that ensnare Lavabo.

"You're not moving towards anything anymore."Star stated. "This is your last chance."

"My entire life I have dedicated to my knight's oath. This is something that cannot be bent or broken."Lavabo admitted. "My brothers and sisters taught me that. I cherish the moments we had together and hold onto them every day. It has made me who I am, and soon I shall see them again."

"Wait, what?"Star asked. "You thought I was gonna kill you? Over a hoodie?!"

"Is that not what is going on here?"Lavabo said.

"No."Star replied. "I was gonna maybe turn you into a duck or, like, boop you on the nose real hard."

"But your eyes, they had the bloodlust."Lavabo commented in suspicion.

"That's just 'cause...Rena and Pony Head was right. I really am messed up about Marco."Star explained sadly and released Lavabo. "I mean, I spent all day chasing down a knight who was just doing his weird job. All because I thought that if I didn't have Marco's hoodie, I wouldn't have any piece of him left, which just isn't true. I'll always have Marco. We'll always be friends."

Lavabo dropped Marco's hoodie into the water.

"Whoa-whoa-whoa, what are you doing?"Star asked.

Marco's hoodie sinked into the water.

Star sighed in defeat.

"Do not worry."Lavabo assured. "I put it on the gentle cycle."

Star smiled at Lavabo.

After Marco's hoodie was clean, Lavabo neatly folded it.

Lavabo sniffed deeply and exhaled slowly.

"Miladies, the garment is clean and up to the standards of the Knights of the Wash."Lavabo stated.

Pony Head and Serena sniffed the hoodie.

"Oh, wow."Pony Head chuckled. "Now, that is delightful."

"Star, you should smell this."Serena remarked.

The two notice Star looked incredibly sad and her cheek hearts were broken.

"Girl, don't be pouty."Pony Head reminded.

"Just come over here."Serena instructed.

"Milady, please."Lavabo said.

Star takes the hoodie from Lavabo and sniffed it.

"Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!"Star giggled excitedly. "It still stinks like Marco!"

"What?! No, it does not!"Pony Head argued. "Me and Rena just sniffed it!"

Pony Head looked at Lavabo.

"Tell her it doesn't."Pony Head stated.

"The hoodie is, in fact, clean."Lavabo commented. "What you are experiencing is the memory of a scent."

"At least you have his memory, Star."Serena admitted kindly.

"You don't need to hold on to those stinky hoodies anymore."Pony Head agreed. "You know why? 'Cause, like, what we have learned is that Earth Turd's scent is, like, in your heart or whatever."

"Awww."Star chuckled before hugging Serena and Pony Head. "Thanks, guys."
