The Untold Story of Serena Butterfly
Chapter 61: Rest in Pudding
At Butterfly Castle...
It was Lekmet's memorial service and organ music was playing in the background.
Manfred goes around giving out empty soup cans as hors d'oeuvres.
King River, Queen Moon and Rhombulus were dressed in black funeral robes.
Star and Serena stood together next to the refreshments table.
Star wore an off-shoulder, short sleeved, long black dress with a darker belt around it and a tied string at the neckline and black flat shoes. Her hair was in a large low bun, with a braid going around her head like her headband, small curls over her ears and periwinkle lavender flowers around her braid and bun.
Serena wore a simple long dark grey dress with a bright grey belt around her waist and a black hairband on her short orange hair.
"And then Lekmet said."King River chuckled and did a guttural bleating.
King River, Queen Moon, Rhombulus and Hekapoo laughed and sighed sadly.
"Hors d'oeuvres, your Highness?"Manfred asked.
Serena glanced at Star.
"Uh...why not?"Star suggested.
Star and Serena picked up the soup cans with toothpicks before Manfred walked away.
"How are we supposed to?"Serena whispered.
The orange haired girl notice Star gnawing noisily on her soup can.
Rhombulus walked over to Star and Serena.
"It's not exactly princess food, but it was Lekmet's favorite meal. That's how humble that guy was."Rhombulus admitted and raised his soup can. "To Lekmet! Our selfless comrade who always gave to others before ever taking for himself!.
Rhombulus does a bleating causing the others to bleat as well.
"I told him that would get him killed one day."Rhombulus stated and looked at Serena. "Give the can to your uncle. He's got teeth like a tiger fish."
Serena nodded and Rhombulus walked away.
The ladle in the punch bowl next to Star moved slightly on it's own.
"Hmm?"Star said.
Star looked closely at the punch bowl and Glossaryck's image appeared in the fruit punch.
Star let out a gasp.
"Star, what's-"Serena started.
The orange haired girl notice Glossaryck in the punch bowl.
"Is that Glossaryck?"Serena asked in surprise.
"Glossaryck!"Star called out and splashed her hands in the punch. "Glossaryck's back! Glossaryck! Glossaryck?"
"Star, chill!"Serena protested bitterly.
Star jumped onto the table and shoved her face into the punch bowl.
"Star!"
Queen Moon walked up to Star and Serena.
Star sat down on the table and turned the bowl upside causing the punch to splash all over.
"Glossaryck! Mum, did you see him?!"Star asked. "In the bowl! In that bowl! You all saw him, right?!"
Queen Moon brought Star and Serena in the hallway.
"Star, I know this is an emotional day."Queen Moon said. "But this is Lekmet's funeral, not Glossaryck's."
"But Aunt Moon we saw Glossaryck."Serena stated.
"Serena, we all see Glossaryck. Here."Queen Moon responded putting her hand on her chest and then on Star and Serena's chest. "...and here too."
"And in that punch bowl! All bug-eyed and big-mouthed! Classic Glossaryck."Star added and gasped. "I bet he came for the memorial!"
"Look, I-I get it, girls. Funerals are unsettling."Queen Moon commented. "Strange food, Lekmet's friends. The music. It's all different and maybe a little scary. But don't turn this into a ghost story."
"What?"Serena questioned. "Who said anything about a ghost? We saw Glossaryck, auntie."
"You-you didn't see Glossaryck!and you didn't see his ghost."
"Okay, stop saying ghost."Star replied with an annoyed look. "It's weird."
"Glossaryck is gone now."Queen Moon said simply. "You just have to let him go."
Both Star and Serena sighed knowing Moon didn't believe them.
"You know, when I was a little girl and there was something I couldn't let go, my mother taught me to say, Baloo-balee, baloo-balow. I let you go, I let you go."Queen Moon explained with a small smile. "And I always felt better afterwards. Give it a try, dear."
Queen Moon walked away, leaving the two girls by themselves.
"What?"Star and Serena asked in unison and glancing at each other.
In Star and Serena's Bathroom...
Star turned on the faucet and brushed her teeth.
After bending over to spit, Star sees Glossaryck in the mirror.
"Glossaryck!"Star gasped and stammered back in shock.
Star ran to the door and sees Glossaryck in the doorknob.
Star screamed in terror as the faucet water overflows in the sink and spilled onto the floor.
In the Girls Bedroom...
Serena was reading her great-grandmother's chapter in the Book of Sorcery while lying on her bed.
"My heart is warmed to see my daughter grow up. I caught a mouse yesterday and showed it to her and she was so merry."Serena read. "I could have cried from delight. To think she enjoys it so. Perhaps she resembles her father in curiosity? I look forward to seeing her mature. Uranus Butterfly."
A confused expression grew on Serena's face.
"If Mercedes's mum was such a kind hearted person then why-"Serena started.
Suddenly Star kicked the bathroom door open, jumped into her bed and wrapped herself in the covers.
"Baloo-balee, baloo-balow! I let you go, I let you go!"Star shouted in fright. "I let you go!"
"Star!"Serena said as she rushed to her cousin's bed. "Are you okay?"
Star poked her head out and grabbed Serena's hand, pulling her towards her.
"Hide or he'll see you!"Star stated, throwing the blanket over Serena's head.
"Who?"Serena asked.
Serena peeked out from under the covered and sees Glossaryck in the puddle of water on the floor.
The orange haired girl ducked under the blanket with Star.
"Why didn't what Aunt Moon say work?"Serena asked nervously.
Star reached under her bed, takes out her interdimensional pocket mirror and quickly dialled a number.
"Yeah?"Janna asked.
"Janna!"Star called out.
On Earth...
Janna was eating a burrito at Britta's Tacos.
Star spoke indistinctly and high-pitched over the phone.
"You're seeing dead people?"Janna asked with a smile. "That's the coolest thing I've heard all summer."
On Mewni...
"What?"Serena demanded, taking the pocket mirror phone from Star. "No, Janna! Weren't you listening?! Not people! Glossaryck! We're being haunted by Glossaryck's ghost! Star did Aunt Moon's baloo-balee-baloo-balow, but it didn't work!"
"Ba-ba-what?"Janna asked.
Star took her mirror phone from Serena.
"Janna, we need your weird, dark-sided expertise!"Star protested. "Or I'm telling you, there are gonna be three ghosts up in here!"
"Okay, well, you're definitely being haunted..."Janna started.
Star whimpered. "No!"
Serena took the pocket mirror from Star as Janna spoke while eating her burrito.
"Yeah, mmm."Janna said. "But if you and Serena are the only ones who sees him, it might mean he has some unfinished business with you two."
"Okay, can you stop eating for one second?"Serena asked. "Also, what unfinished business?"
Janna kept chewing on her food and Serena grew more irritated.
"Janna!"Serena snapped with a glare.
"Sorry, it was getting cold."Janna apologised. "Maybe there's an anchor near you. You know, something he left in this world, keeping his ghost bound to it. Are any of his belongings around?"
"No, Glossaryck didn't own anything."Star replied. "The only thing that sort of belonged to him was-"
Star stopped talking as her eyes growing wide.
"Star, what did you do?"Serena questioned, narrowing her eyes.
Instead of responding, Star quickly got out of bed and rushed towards the secret closet.
Star opened it and Serena noticed something sitting on the floor of the closet.
Serena got up and walked over, just as Star pulled out a piece that belonged in the Book of Spells.
"Are you guys dead?"Janna asked from the pocket mirror phone.
"You kept the spell book?!"Serena screamed in anger.
Star flinched at Serena's angry respond.
"I thought it would be a good idea to remember Glossaryck by!"Star admitted.
"Why would you keep that, Star?"Janna asked.
Star took her pocket mirror phone from Serena.
"Uh, Janna, you're gonna get on my case for keeping weird stuff?"Star asked firmly.
"Touché."Janna complemented. "Says here you gotta let that stuff go. And by let it go, I mean bury it."
"Like bury bury?"Star asked.
"Yeah and deep."Janna commented. "Real deep."
Then Janna hang up the call.
"I'm going to go bury this."Star stated bravely looking at the remain of the Book of the Spells. "You can stay here, Rena."
"Way ahead of you."Serena agreed, going back to her bed.
"Seriously?!"Star asked with a frown.
"Hey, I wasn't the one who kept a piece of the spell book."Serena reminded.
Star gulped and looked out the bedroom window.
In Mewni's Pet Cemetery...
Star dug a hole in the ground as she felt a shadow behind her.
The blonde haired girl turned around seeing Glossaryck's image appearing in the clouds over her.
"Okay, okay, okay, calm down! I'm doing it!"Star assured nervously and buried the book piece. "And buried buried. Goodbye, Glossaryck."
Star notice Glossaryck's image had vanished from the clouds.
"Whew!"Star sighed in relief.
In the Girls Bedroom...
Serena started dozing off but woke up when she heard the bedroom door open.
The orange haired girl sat up and saw Star walking around.
"Do you see him?"Serena asked while rubbing her eyes.
"Thankfully, no."Star replied with a smile. "Anyway, goodnight!"
"Goodnight."Serena said simply and lied back down on her bed.
But then Stat let out a scream causing Serena to quickly sat and see blue fingers curling up from the sides of her bed.
Serena jumped out of her bed and went on the floor.
She took one step forward but notice the floor changed into something pink and squishy.
Serena turned around and saw Glossaryck staring at her with his mouth open wide and his tongue out.
"Yuck!"Serena scoffed in disgust.
Serena shrieked seeing a bunch of eyes were on every wall of the bedroom.
"Star!"Serena called out while panicking. "Where are you?!"
Someone grabbed Serena's hand and pulled her up from the floor.
Star pulled Serena back to her bed and they both hid under the blanket.
Star used her pocket mirror to call Janna.
"Janna, Janna, Janna, Janna!"Star mumbled.
"Yo, Star."Janna answered.
"Janna!"Star called out and started babbling indistinctly.
"You buried it in a pet cemetery?!"Janna scowled.
"Well, he's small."Star replied.
"Well done Star, now he's even more angry at us."Serena muttered.
"Okay, well, that's better than flushing him down the toilet."Star reminded with a glare.
"That's not how it works, Star."Janna admitted.
"Yeah, I can see that now, Janna! He's still here!"Star stated. "And now he's, like, here here!"
"Wait, you're seeing him in the physical world? Oh, that's not good."Janna complemented. "You need to go bury the pieces in a sacred place. Somewhere that would have significance to him. Then you'll stop seeing him. And it looks like you gotta do it right now, or else he'll haunt you for eternity."
"Star, the sanctuary."Serena commented in realisation.
"I think we have the perfect place."Star remarked. "Okay, thanks so much, Janna! Byeeeee!"
Star ended the call.
Serena lifted the edge of the blanket, showing Star the Glossaryck in the bed lamp nearby.
Star shivered. "Right. Let's go take care of this."
In the Mewni Sanctuary...
Stone steps appeared, leading up to the magic well in the center of the room.
Star and Serena jumped onto the steps and reached to the stairs that was leading up to the well.
The two girls walked up in silence and made it to the last step.
Star and Serena climbed to the top of the Well of Magic and saw Glossaryck in the water.
Star dropped the remain of the Book of Spells in the water, but Glossaryck didn't go away.
"Why, Glossaryck? Why are you still here? We gave you what you wanted."Star said with a frown. "What else do you want from us?!"
Glossaryck didn't reply.
"Not talking, huh?"Serena questioned in disappointment.
"You are always so frustrating and confusing and Glossaryck! Okay, look. I know I was a jerk to you sometimes, okay? But you're being an even bigger jerk now. I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Is that what you want?! I thought you were gone! But no! No, no, no!"Star complained as she walked a few steps away. "Now you're just spooky bug-eyed reflections! And a cloud?! Who is a cloud?! And you're weird things in our room! I just don't get it. I thought you didn't even want to be around us."
"Star..."Serena started.
"You know, Glossaryck, I have so much to do to fix this kingdom and it would be a lot more helpful if you were really here instead of just haunting us like some kind of weird reflection creep!"Star admitted.
Glossaryck continued being quiet.
Star sighed and sat down next to Serena.
"You know, Glossaryck, you never made it easy learning from you."Serena responded. "Maybe that was the point. You did always trust us to figure things out on our own. And you were still always there for us. And no one else was really always there for us."
Star nodded and smiled a little bit.
"Teacher...Friend...Weird book guy."Star commented. "Whatever you were, you were super important to us. Thank you, Glossaryck. Thank you for everything."
Star and Serena notice Glossaryck was no longer in the well.
"I hope you find your big bowl of pudding."Star said with a sad smile.
Serena placed a hand on Star's shoulder.
Star looked at her cousin and nodded.
Both of the girls got down and started walking back to the stairs.
The two stopped walking and glanced back at the well.
"Baloo-balee, baloo-balow."Star and Serena said softly. "I let you go, I let you go."
As Star and Serena left the Sanctuary, the ground started rumbling.
Then gold magenta water bursted out of the Well of Magic.
But just before the girls could run out, gold magenta water flooded the Sanctuary.
Star and Serena broke out the surface of the water and gasped for air.
The duo see something glowing bright causing their eyes to widen.
The Next Morning...
Queen Moon and King River were eating breakfast in the castle dining hall.
There was a low faint thudding coming from the hallway.
"Do you hear something?"Queen Moon asked.
Star bursted into the hall by kicking in the door while holding something behind her back.
"Mom, Dad!"Star called out.
"Star, I'm not going to tell you again."Queen Moon said with a frown. "Stop kicking doors."
"Hi Aunt Moon and Uncle River."Serena greeted as she rushed in and stopped to catch her breath.
"Mum! Mum! Oh, my goodness, you won't believe it! Okay, we were at the Sanctuary, and we were saying goodbye and we really said goodbye, and then all this magic shot out of the well, and—!"Star explained quickly.
"Slow down, girls."Queen Moon ordered and raised an eyebrow. "What in the world are you talking about?"
"We did what you said! We did it! We let him go!"Serena admitted. "We did your baloo-balee, but...he came back."
Serena looked at Star and Star pulled Glossaryck out from behind her back.
"Globgor."Glossaryck responded.
