The Untold Story of Serena Butterfly

Chapter 64: A Royal Birth

Outside the Avalon Castle...

It was night time and people in the kingdom were celebrating a special day.

Drakath and a pregnant Pamela were dancing, surrounded by well-wishers and other guests that were celebrating the queen's pregnancy.

Pamela wore a red kirtle with a golden leaf design with a paisley green and gold gown on top. The edge of the material was lined with black velvet and gold pieces. On her head, she wore a gold crown and a gold pink star necklace around her neck.

As Queen of Avalon, Pamela became popular and well-liked for her kind heart and uncommon beauty, more so for her charisma, political influence, socialising and swordsmanship.

The people danced around the king and his queen in joy since a heir was going to be born soon.

A male heir was crucial to continuing the royal line and securing the kingdom. So it was probably the young queen's most fundamental responsibility.

"Are you happy?"Drakath asked.

"I am."Pamela responded kindly.

"You don't secretly wish you'd married someone grander?"Drakath asked with a smile.

"No."Pamela answered softly. "I want a husband who loves me, who thinks it first thing every morning and last thing at night."

"Then you've found the right man."Drakath admitted.

Afterwards...

Pamela was having lunch with Drakath in the banquet hall.

A servant walked by and whispered something in Drakath's ear.

"Yes, bring him in."Drakath replied.

"Are we having company?"Pamela asked with a smile.

"Don't you think this pork has a funny taste?"Drakath said.

"No."Pamela answered kindly. "Not really, no."

Then Anita, an old maid, walked into the room with a three year old boy.

The little boy had messy auburn hair, pale skin and dark grey eyes. He wore a white collared shirt, brown pants with straps over his shoulders and black shoes.

"Pam, this is Louis and he will be staying with us."Drakath stated.

A confused expression grew on Pamela's face.

"Why?"Pamela asked softly.

Drakath gives a look at Anita causing her to walk away with Louis.

Pamela looked at Louis as he was brought out of sight and then her husband.

"Because his mother is dead and he has no other place to go."Drakath replied.

A disgusted look grew on Pamela's face as a sudden realisation came into her mind.

"Have you fathered that child?"Pamela asked.

"It's...It's only a little boy, Pam."Drakath responded with a smile. "It's hardly the end of the universe."

"Are you expecting me to look after him?"Pamela questioned.

"We have a house full of vacant rooms."Drakath said. "Don't worry, I ordered for him to be properly educated and have a princely household supervised by Sir McGray. In fact for the last weeks, you can practice your mothering skills on him, until our son arrives."

Pamela looked down quietly as she stroked gently her swollen stomach.

Later that Night...

Pamela walked around the hallway and saw Louis was tucked into a bed in his new room.

"Does your teddy have a name?"Anita asked kindly. "I bet he loves being in his new bedroom. You'll have to think of a name and let me know tomorrow. Do you think you'll be able to do that, Louis?"

"Would you leave us, please?"Pamela asked.

"Yes, your highness."Anita responded with a bow.

She left the bedroom leaving Pamela alone with Louis.

Louis looked quietly at Pamela with a sad expression.

The nineteen year old girl smiled at her step-son.

"Hello, Louis."Pamela greeted with a soft smile as she sat on the bed. "My name is Pamela."

A Few Days Later...

The sun was slowly rising up for a new day.

Pamela was walking her way to the garden during the early hours of the morning.

"The scent is best in the morning."Pamela remarked.

Anita carefully accompanied Pamela down the stone steps and into the royal garden.

There were maybe fifteen varieties of rose in bloom; blue, yellow and white, but it was the purple ones that drew the queen.

Pamela buried her face in the blooms and drank in their aroma.

But when the brunette carefully stood up, she felt unsettling pain coming from her stomach.

"Is it birthing pangs, Your Majesty?"Anita asked in concern.

Pamela nodded, breathing steadily through her mouth and confirming the old maid's worst fears.

"Help, someone, help!"Anita shouted. "The queen is in labour!"

Windows all around the courtyard banged open and courtiers in their nightcaps came into the garden to assist.

In the Woods...

Drakath was out horse riding with his companions.

"I've waited years for this."Drakath stated with a smile. "I shall teach him to ride, wrestle, draw a bow. I want you to organise jousts, banquets and masques to celebrate the birth of my son."

Then an announcer from afar riding on a horse called out to the king.

"Your Majesty!"He called out. "Your Majesty!"

"Here comes my good news."Drakath complemented.

The King of Avalon rode his horse up to the man.

"The child is born!"the announcer shouted.

Drakath's companions grew excited that the male heir to the Avalon throne was born.

In Pamela's Chambers...

An infant's cry was heard as the maids washed and put on clothes for the new baby while Pamela was lying on her pillow crying.

"Queen Pamela you have given birth to a very healthy baby girl."the midwife remarked.

"The child is perfectly formed and alive, Your Majesty."the doctor said.

"I have failed."Pamela cried in sadness. "I have failed. Someone help me."

The maids stare at Pamela sadly.

"Give me privacy."Dimitri admitted.

The doctor and the midwife moved away from Pamela as Dimitri went up to his daughter.

"Don't weep."Dimitri stated. "Sit up and smile. Your are the Queen. Brazen it out. A girl this time, but a boy the next time. Do you hear me?"

The infant girl continued to cry for her mother.

"Is she beautiful?"Pamela asked as she dried her tears.

"Yes, she is."Dimitri replied.

The baby girl's cry became more louder.

"Give me the child."Pamela ordered. "Give me my daughter."

Anita picked up the crying baby girl from the cradle and brought her in Pamela's arms.

Pamela smiled at her newborn daughter and kissed her forehead as she rocked her slowly.

The baby girl had lovely dark golden blonde hair, cobalt blue eyes, fair skin and hot pink fleur-de-lis shaped marks on her cheeks.

Then Drakath came into the chamber.

"Is he well?"Drakath called out as he walked up to the bed. "Is he strong?"

"My Lord..."Pamela greeted as the newborn girl continued to cry.

"Those are lungs that will out-bellow my cousin's ambassador, huh Pam?"Drakath chuckled. "And the eyes. The eyes are clever. We'll call him Artemis. It's a lucky name for Avalon Kings."

"I have borne you a daughter, Your Majesty."Pamela admitted softly.

The smile on Drakath's face slowly vanished hearing that.

"A daughter?"Drakath asked.

"Yes."Pamela replied.

"Why did no one tell me before I entered?"Drakath questioned.

"I wanted to tell you myself, we have a beautiful daughter."Pamela explained. "Next time, a son. Andromeda. We shall call her Andromeda."

"Is the child in good health?"Drakath asked.

"Perfect, Your Majesty."the doctor replied.

"Good."Drakath replied simply with a soft smile. "Well, if we can have a healthy daughter, we can have a healthy son, as you say, as you...say. I'll kiss you and leave you, Pam."

Drakath gives Pamela a kiss on the forehead before leaving the chamber without even giving another glance to his newborn daughter.

Pamela notice Louis peeking from the door.

"Louis, it's alright."Pamela remarked. "Don't be afraid. Come here."

Louis slowly walked into the chamber and went next to Pamela.

His eyes focused on his newborn half-sister.

"Meet your new baby sister, Andromeda."Pamela commented with a warm smile.

"Sister?"Louis asked in surprise. "I thought I was getting a brother."

"You'll get a brother next time, I promise."Pamela assured. "Remember your her big brother and it's your job to keep your little sister safe."

"Okay."Louis answered with a smile.

A Few Hours Later...

There was Andromeda's christening and the people of Avalon rejoiced at the birth of the newborn princess.

"...infinite goodness send prosperous life and long to the high and mighty Princess of Avalon, Andromeda!"

Dimitri, Etheria and the other guests bowed as Isobel came over holding Andromeda before handing her to Pamela, who sat in her throne chair.

In the King's Study...

"There can be no question of her legitimacy."Drakath said. "You will prepare a bill to put before Parliament. It will state that the line of succession is now firmly vested in Pamela's children and no others."

"I shall do as Your Majesty commands."the servant stated.

The man walked away as Etheria went to see Drakath in the throne room.

"Your majesty."Etheria greeted with a bow.

"I am in no mood for a conversation."Drakath responded with a frown. "Is your daughter at all able to give me a son?"

"Take heart, Your Grace."Etheria stated. "As long as the mother is in good health, consider this mishap a draft, a promise of what is soon to come."

In a Nursery Room...

Pamela held out a little gold locket as Andromeda watched it while lying on her little cradle.

"Can you see the light?"Pamela whispered. "Can you see it?"

The young woman giggled softly as Andromeda began to gurgle at her.

Then Etheria came into the room.

"Darling, how are you?"Etheria asked.

"Quite well."Pamela replied.

"Is she strong and healthy?"Etheria asked.

"She's perfect."Pamela responded kindly and then frowned a little. "Did Drakath receive you?"

"Yes."Etheria said.

"Is he upset that she's not a son?"Pamela asked. "He just glanced at her and then left. I've hardly seen him since."

"It's been a difficult time for His Grace, my dear."Etheria admitted. "Many eyes are upon him and not all of them kind."

She smiled at her newborn step-granddaughter.

"She is the loveliest."Etheria complemented.

Andromeda began whimper and cry again.

"Nurse?"Etheria said.

The nurse stood up from her chair and walked forward holding a little bottle.

"No, I will feed her."Pamela remarked.

"Are you sure, darling?"Etheria asked.

"Yes."Pamela replied kindly. "I am her mother, after all, even if she is only a girl."

Pamela picked up Andromeda and was about to feed her until Drakath came into the room.

"Hey."Drakath said. "What are you doing?"

"Your Majesty."the maids greeted while bowing.

"May I not feed her from my own breast?"Pamela asked.

Drakath chuckled and shook his head.

"Queens don't do that especially not for a daughter, love."Drakath commented.

Drakath steps forward, reaching for his infant daughter.

The King of Avalon holds his daughter expertly and presses a kiss to the top of her head.

Then Mercedes showed up causing the maids to get frightened.

"Hi auntie."Pamela greeted.

Mercedes looked at Andromeda, who blew raspberry and giggled at her instead of crying in fear.

"So pure and so innocent."Mercedes said with a fake smile and frowned. "Hopefully, you won't spoil her too much."

"Don't worry, Aunt Mercedes."Pamela assured kindly. "She won't cause no trouble to anyone."

"She better not."Mercedes scoffed before leaving the room and thought darkly. "I won't hesitate to get rid of that brat even if she is part of my brother's side of the family tree."
