"She's gone!" Hugh yelled. Doris snapped her head up from where she was reading her book on the bench. The other parents that were milling about looked around and mumbled about themselves.
Hugh ran over to his wife and gasped, "I don't know what happened! I was going to catch Hermione going down the tunnel slide but then didn't come out at the bottom. It's like she just vanished or something." He ran a hand through his disheveled hair and glanced around the playground again.
Doris marked her page and closed her book and said in a patient voice, "Now, Hugh. Take a few deep breaths, ok? You need to calm down or you're going to faint. Alright, now in... out... in... out..." She coached him through some more breathing then said, "Better? Now tell me again what happened."
A man with a long white beard over by the swings smiled to himself then vanished in the blink of an eye.
Hermione gasped as she landed somewhere she didn't know. The room she was in was big but was so cluttered it felt much smaller. There was a clock in the corner that didn't have numbers but had other words on it. There was a large dining room table and the pots and pans in the sink were moving by themselves. There were clothes and books and boxes strewn all over the floor. Finally, her eyes landed on a little boy, peeking out from behind a wall to her left.
"Who are you?" Hermione cried out, "Where's mummy and dada?" Tears welled up in her eyes as she thought about how worried her parents must be.
"My name is George. What are you doing here?" The boy asked coming out from the stairs.
"I-I don't know... I want my mummy and dada! Take me back, please!" she wailed. George's eyes widened and he tried to shush, her but her crying only got louder.
A booming angry voice came from above as a someone stomped down the stairs. "George quit teasing Ginny! How many times-" A plump woman in an orange apron came around the corner from the stairs and saw Hermione laying on the floor crying. She paused for a moment, before muttering something about a meddling old man under her breath and marching over to the little girl. The woman reached out to pick her up, but Hermione scrambled backward out of reach knocking over a tall stack of pans. She'd stopped screaming and was now whimpering softly.
"What's all that racket about?" came a shout from upstairs. More footsteps coming down the stairs. Mrs. Weasley flicked her wand and the door to the stairs slammed shut. George stood silent by the stairs, shifting his feet uncomfortably.
"Darling, it's ok, I won't hurt you. My name is Molly Weasley and I'm going to help you find your parents, ok?" the woman said in a soothing voice. She held one hand out and this time Hermione took it and let the woman help her up. "What's your name, honey?"
"Hermione Granger."
Mrs. Weasley beamed down at her. She walked the little girl over to the couch and sat down. "Hello, Miss. Granger. Welcome to my home. Now, where were before you found yourself here?" Mrs. Weasley turned to George and mouthed something. George ran to the kitchen and brought over a cup of water.
"We were at the park down the street from my house," Hermione said, taking the glass handed to her from the boy.
"Well, while I work on getting you back home my son, George, here will take you outside so you can play." Mrs. Weasley said, "George, don't go beyond the garden, understood?"
"Yes, ma'am." George took Hermione's hand and said, "Let's go."
Hermione walked outside with him and allowed George to lead her under a tree. The two sat down in awkward silence for a couple of minutes before George blurted, "Are you a witch?"
Hermione looked affronted at the boy and said, "That's not very nice!"
"No, I mean can you do magic?" George clarified quickly.
Hermione's eyes got wide. "How did you know?" she asked in astonishment. "How did you know about the things I do?"
George shrugged and said, "How else would you have gotten here?" A pause. "Your parents must be muggles then? I mean non-magical people?"
"No, they can't do the things I do. Is it really magic?" Hermione asked wistfully. "I've always wondered if it was magic. Mummy doesn't believe me when I say I can make things come to me without moving. I knew I wasn't imagining things though!"
George smiled at her. "Yeah, that means you're a witch! I'm a wizard, you see, my parents are too. I've never met a muggle-born before. Is it true you go around in big metal things?"
"Of course we have a car!" Hermione said with a laugh. "How do you get around?"
With that, the two got into a long discussion about the differences between their worlds. The spoke of transportation and school and all the different animals and creatures they had seen. Time went by unnoticed and as the sun went down, Mrs. Weasley came outside with her husband and said, "Well, Hermione, we found your home and, my husband, Arthur is going to take you there. Did you have anything with you?"
Hermione shook her head. "I'm a witch!" she exclaimed excitedly.
Mrs. Weasley gasped and smiled. "Oh, dear that's wonderful! I expect you will go to school with George then when you two are a bit older. But you best be off now. Your parents must be worried sick."
Mr. Weasley stepped forward and said, "Take my hand and grab this rope."
Hermione did as he said and waved. "Goodbye, George!" George waved back and opened his mouth to answer her. Before he could say anything, they disappeared.
A/N: I think I'll end it there for now. Once again, I may add more later. I hope you enjoyed my little one-shot and continue to read and review these. Thank you!
