Chapter 67: Starfari
In the Mewni Marketplace...
Tom browsed a rack of T-shirts while Serena checked some jewellery and Star looked at some toy wands.
"Whoa."Star said in surprise.
"Yeah, that princess merch is, like, so cute, but for that price, I'm, like, it better do real magic."the teen monster remarked and then walked away.
"That is funny and a good point."Star chuckled.
"Ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo!"Tom commented while holding red T-shirt in front of him. "This one's spicy!"
Star went up to Serena and picked up a rose quartz heart necklace.
"Oh, my gosh, this is the cutest thing."Star admitted.
Serena smirked. "I know, right?"
"Hey, monster! You know the rules!"the store owner shouted. "Monsters ain't welcome, so put the merch back and get out!"
"Whoa."Star said sadly.
"Rude."Serena mumbled with a frown.
Store Owner prods the teen monster with broom.
"Shoo, shoo, shoo!"the store owner ordered.
The teen monster ran away crying.
"Do you guys think I'd look cute in this shirt?"Tom asked holding the red shirt.
"What?"Star said.
"Or..."Tom started as he reached down for a different T-shirt.
"Hey, over there!"the store owner called out. "That goes for you, too! Monster!"
"Hmph!"Tom growled as he stood up and glared at the store owner.
"Oh! Prince Lucitor!"the store owner gasped and knelt in front of Tom. "Sorry. Sorry, sir. Please don't incinerate my shop."
The store owner kissed Tom's hand.
Star and Serena looked at each other.
At Butterfly Castle...
Queen Moon was in the library reading law books.
"Circumstantial evidence...hmm, okay."Queen Moon read. "Hmm."
Fast footsteps were heard approaching from outside.
"No."Queen Moon whispered with a frown.
Star kicked the library door open, revealing her and Serena.
"Hey, mum!"Star shouted.
"Aunt Moon!"Serena called out.
Queen Moon let out a strained groan.
Star and Serena brought a cart that held a model of the Kingdoms in Mewni.
"You know how Mewmans kind of keep monsters separated from the rest of the kingdom?"Star asked.
"Yes."Queen Moon replied.
"Well, we were just wondering, why?"Star asked.
"We keep monsters out because monsters are dangerous."Queen Moon responded. "You both know that."
"Well, yeah. But-but no! No-no-no-no-no! Not all of them."Star said and held out a Rhombulus action figure. "And what about people who aren't Mewmans but also aren't monsters? Like Rhombulus. He has snakes for hands. Are his hands monsters?"
"Heavens, no!"Queen Moon answered with a smile. "He's on the Magical High Commission!"
"And what about the Pony Heads?"Star asked and used her wand to make the Pony Head figure float. "They're a bunch of floating horse heads!"
"No, dear."Queen Moon said. "We've had ties with the Pony Heads for generations."
"And Rich Pigeon?"Star suggested. "His kingdom is brand-new! And he's a pigeon with legs, Mother! How is he not a monster?"
"Well, dear, he's rich."Queen Moon commented.
"I don't really see what that has to do with anything. And what about the Lucitors?"Star asked. "I've seen Tom do some pretty scary stuff. Somehow he's not a monster?"
"Aunt Moon, we know that Septarians are bunch of jerk monster creeps."Serena said distastefully. "But we have no idea what is the difference between us and the other monsters."
"Yeah, what's the difference?!"Star asked. "What the heck is the difference?!"
"Enough! Look, I don't make the rules."Queen Moon stated. "The Royal Monster Expert does."
"I'm sorry, what?"Star asked. "We have a monster on staff?"
"Not a monster."Queen Moon responded. "A monster expert. Dr. Jelly Goodwell."
"Okay, then I'm gonna go have a little chat with this Jelly Goodwell, if that even is her real name."Star admitted with a frown.
"Fine!"Queen Moon shouted.
"Fine! Bye!"Star snapped and slammed the library door shut.
Serena sighed. "I'll be leaving too."
Serena walked over to the door and reached for the door knob just as Queen Moon spoke up.
"Star need to keep in mind, she is going to be future queen."Queen Moon reminded. "Both of you have to keep in mind the good of the people, even if it means keeping things in the old ways."
"The old ways need to change, auntie."Serena commented calmly. "Don't forget, my mum tried to bring peace on both sides."
Serena opened the door and left the room, following after Star.
The orange haired girl turned down several hallways, walking past doors upon doors of departments that had experts on.
Serena saw Star standing in front of a door and rushed over to her.
Star touched the knob to open the door.
"Pardon me, is this Dr. Goodwell's office?"Star asked.
Dr Jelly Goodwell sat on a desk while holding large magnifying glass.
"Yes, I'm Dr. Goodwell."Dr Goodwell answered.
Star and Serena walked into the room.
"Ah, thank goodness! Now, you listen up, Goodwell! The way we treat monsters around here is outrageous! We have got all these dumb rules saying monsters can't mingle with humans and monsters can't go here and monsters can't go there!"Star argued. "It's gotten to the point where a monster can't even go shopping for a pre-ripped T-shirt! Well, sister, I am not leaving here until you agree to make some changes."
Dr Goodwell stood up from her seat.
"I've spent my entire life studying monsters."Dr Goodwell admitted. "Nobody knows more about them than I do. I've even lived among them and observed their behavior firsthand and you two... are exactly the princesses I've been waiting for!"
"Wait, what?"Star asked.
"You've wanted royals who understand monsters?"Serena questioned.
"For years, I've hoped to find royals who actually gets it."Dr Goodwell admitted. "The way we treat monsters in Mewni is, well, monstrous!"
"Exactly."Star agreed with a grin.
"Monsters need to be respected."Dr Goodwell commented.
"Yes."Serena agreed.
"And loved!"Dr Goodwell added.
"Yes!"Star agreed happily.
"And their habitat preserved!"Dr Goodwell complemented.
"Oh, yes!"Star cheered. "Yes! Yes!"
Serena blinked in confusion.
"Excellent."Dr Goodwell responded. "Let me take you out into the field and show you what I've been working on."
Star nodded. "Let's go!"
Star, Serena and Dr Goodwell walked through Mewni.
Star wore a light green monster costume that had a round squishy body, one yellow eye, a purple mouth that opens to reveal two sharp teeth and Star's face, a brown horn, purple hair, small arms and dark blue shirt pants with a brown belt.
Both Star and Dr Goodwell both wore monster costumes except Serena since she said there wasn't any reason to wear one if they were going to go talk to monsters.
"Aw come on, Rena."Star remarked. "These costumes are what Dr Goodwell thinks will be best for us."
"I'm starting to doubt her position as the monster expert."Serena whispered.
"They're monster camouflage."Dr Goodwell chuckled. "Speaking of which, we should probably go ahead and apply our monster musk."
"Monster musk?"Star said. "What's that?"
Dr Goodwell sprayed Star and Serena with monster musk.
The two cousins sniffed and gagged.
"Oh, that is gross!"Serena coughed. "What's in there?"
"My own special blend of various monster secretions."Dr Goodwell explained andbsprays musk into her mouth causing her to gargle and spit. "Let's get going!"
The three started travelling in areas that were on the map.
"First we need to go through the Forest of Certain Death...then across the Lake of Endless Suffering...over the Dam of Constant Sorrow."Dr Goodwell said. "Across the Bridge of the Inevitable Hereafter...and here we are!"
After traveling through the above areas, Serena, Star and Dr Goodwell arrived to a small treehouse.
"Whoa, sick treehouse, doc!"Star complemented.
"Oh, no-no."Dr Goodwell laughed and started climbing the treehouse ladder. "It's not a treehouse. It is my field research lab."
"She really needs to learn the differences between a treehouse and lab."Serena muttered.
"I'm starting to see your point."Star responded quietly.
Star tried following Dr. Goodwell up the ladder, but her monster costume prevented her from climbing.
"Star, I think it's best if you take it off."Serena suggested.
"Good idea."Star agreed kindly.
Star removed her costume before she climbed into the treehouse followed by Serena.
"Dr Goodwell?"Star asked. "Whatcha doing?"
"Shhh!"Dr Goodwell hushed as she looked through the binoculars. "There's a herd nearby!"
"A herd?"Serena questioned raising an eyebrow. "A herd of what?"
"Monsters!"Dr Goodwell replied.
Star and Serena see a large village of monsters at the center of a small valley.
"Whoa."Star gasped.
"Cool."Serena answered.
"This hill features naturally occurring geographic formations that almost look like buildings."Dr Goodwell whispered. "The monsters were clever enough to use them for shelter. Amazing!"
Serena groaned while Star laughed lightly.
"Wait, what?"Star asked.
"Ooh! Ooh!"Dr Goodwell giggled and gave each of the princesses a pair of binoculars. "You both have got to get a look at this!"
Serena rolled her eyes as she and Star looked through their binoculars.
They see Buff Frog walking through the village with his tadpoles in a baby stroller.
"There's 011358 and he has his offspring with him!"Dr Goodwell admitted.
"Oh, hey, Buff Frog!"Star remarked. "You know him, too?"
"I have been watching 011358 since he was a tadpole."Dr Goodwell explained. "I implanted a tracker on his ear and have been keeping close tabs on him ever since."
The trio see Buff Frog have a tracker on his right ear.
Buff Frog whistled and scratched just below his ear.
"Okay, I don't know about this, Goodwell."Star stated. "The spying? The costumes? The monster musk? Monsters are just like us. You don't need all this equipment to get to know them."
"Get to know them?"Dr Goodwell chuckled. "Oh, sweet, naive Star. It's not so simple. When monsters and Mewmans mix, bad things happen, usually to the monsters."
"I wonder who's fault was that, Dr Goodwell."Serena said bitterly.
"I've devised a plan! Let me show...both of you..."Dr Goodwell announced and slowly slinked away into another room.
Dr Goodwell returned with a cart covered in a tarp.
The old woman pulled away the tarp to reveal a model of the monster village and surrounding valleys.
"Ta-da!"Dr Goodwell introduced.
Star gasped. "Ooh! Nice cartsmanship."
"Thank you!"Dr Goodwell replied.
"Aw, look at little tiny us in the treehouse! So cute!"Star commented as she bent down. "And the monster village! What are you planning?"
Dr Goodwell poured water from water cooler into a cup.
"You see that wondrously mysterious structure the monsters built?"Dr Goodwell asked and poured water at top of model.
"You mean the dam?"Serena corrected.
"I believe it's some kind of primitive monument that they built out of instinct."Dr Goodwell admitted. "But no matter. We simply remove a small piece of their structure to release a gentle flow of water, which travels down the chasm, covers the lowlands around the monster nesting grounds, and creates a natural island! Voilà!"
Dr. Goodwell removed a piece of the dam in her model, causing the water to flow down and turn the village into an island.
"More like a prison."Star said in disapproval. "I mean, how are they supposed to get in and out?"
"Well, they don't! It's guaranteed total isolation from Mewmans!"Dr Goodwell answered menacingly and takes out a detonator. "Shall I detonate the dam?"
Dr Goodwell hovered her finger over the button.
"Don't you dare!"Serena snapped.
Star put a hand on Serena's shoulder.
"Listen, we can't just go around blowing up dams and imprisoning monsters. That's crazy!"Star protested. "Mewmans have been deciding what's best for monsters for way too long."
As Star talked, something was doing a beeping sound.
"But I already did it."Dr Goodwell responded holding the detonator with the button pressed.
Star and Serena looked out the window and saw a piece of the dam had burst.
An explosion at the dam caused water to rush down from the top.
"You're an idiot!"Serena shouted in anger. "How can you treat monsters like animals?!"
"But aren't they?"Dr Goodwell asked.
Serena screamed in frustration and headed to the ladder.
"While you try to figure out what a monster is to you, Dr Goodwell, Star and I are going to go save lives that matter."Serena stated as she went down the ladder.
"We thought you were different."Star commented with a frown. "But you're just like everybody else here."
Star and Serena leave the treehouse.
At the Monster Village...
Buff Frog was checking on his tadpoles that was in a small stroller.
"No, no, no, no, no. Stop complaining."Buff Frog ordered. "Look, of course there is bigger, better stroller. But you should appreciate the one we have."
Buff Frog's tadpoles looked at him with sad and angry looks.
Star and Serena runs up to Buff Frog.
"Hey, Buff Frog! Look-look-look-look-look!"Star called out and stuffed binoculars into Buff Frog's eyes. "Jelly Goodwell blew the dam and now the water's gonna come down and turn this whole place into an island!"
"What?"Buff Frog asked and looked at the dam.
In Buff Frog's vision, a small amount of water trickled steadily from the dam.
"Hey, Star, Serena, it's not a problem. That's just a little trickle of water. Nothing we haven't seen before."Buff Frog assured and looked at Dr Goodwell. "Oh, you must be crazy dirty lady that watches us through trees. Hello. I am Yvgeny Bulgolyubov."
"Well, I'm Jelly Goodwell!"Dr Goodwell greeted. "Oh-ho-ho!"
Dr. Goodwell shakes Buff Frog's hand with the hand she's holding the detonator with.
Another explosion at the dam goes off, destroying it entirely and sending a large rush of water hurling toward the village.
Buff Frog, Star and Serena glared at Dr Goodwell.
"Oh, I'm such a turd-brain!"Dr Goodwell replied with a nervous smile. "I...I shook your hand with the blower-upper thing!"
"No, it's too much water! It won't create an island!"Buff Frog protested. "This will destroy entire village! Come on!"
The water rushed through the winding valley toward the village.
Buff Frog picked up the boulder.
"Incoming!"Buff Frog called out and hurled the boulder.
"Oh, my goodness!"Dr Goodwell said.
"Come on, move it!"Buff Frog shouted. "This is not drill!"
More monsters appeared to hurl objects and Three-eyed Potato Baby throws a house.
Star and Serena used their magic to stack the objects together to make a new dam.
The water continued to rush toward the village, knocking over some trees.
"Hey, girls!"Bonnie called out and skilfully tossed boulders at Star and Serena. "Catch!"
Star and Serena stacked the boulders on top of the dam.
"Incredible!"Dr Goodwell remarked. "Mewmans and monsters working together!"
"Here it comes!"Star warned.
"Let's hurry!"Serena protested.
"Oh, no!"Dr Goodwell panicked.
"Hey!"Katrina responded holding a log.
"Huh?"Dr Goodwell asked.
"Grab that rock!"Katrina instructed.
Dr. Goodwell picked up the rock.
"Great, let's go!"Katrina said.
"Oh!"Dr Goodwell replied. "Okay!"
Star and Serena finished building the new dam seconds before the water reached them.
The water only makes a small splash over the dam.
The two girls and the monsters cheered in joy.
"How could I have been such a dum-dum?"Dr Goodwell asked. "Here I thought we should live separately. But really, Mewmans should live like monsters!"
Dr Goodwell ripped off her clothes and her hat landed on a small monster's head.
Star covered's Buff Frog eyes and Serena covered the tadpoles eyes.
"Ha-ha!"Dr Goodwell laughed and rolled in the mud. "Play in the mud! Act like idiots!"
Dr Goodwell throws a rock at her hat on the small monster's head, knocking it off.
"I'm a monster!"Dr Goodwell laughed and climbed up a tree. "I'm a monster!"
"Weirdo."Serena scowled softly.
Star picked up Dr Goodwell's 'Royal Monster Expert' badge and pinned it to Buff Frog's chest.
"There."Star stated proudly. "Now Mewni has a real monster expert."
"Thank you."Buff Frog cried.
"Awww, you're crying."Star cooed.
"No, the badge."Buff Frog reminded in pain. "I think you broke the skin a little."
"Oh, gosh!"Star replied and removed the badge from Buff Frog's chest. "Sorry, sorry, sorry!"
Buff Frog, Star and Serena burst out laughing.
