The Untold Story of Serena Butterfly

Chapter 68: Hearts Divided

In the Avalon Field...

There was children laughter heard in the background.

Pamela walked in the grassy field with Louis and her two daughters; Andromeda and Harriet Butterfly.

The young woman wore a gold white dress and has her hair was tied in a low ponytail decorated with a white bow.

Through out the past years, Drakath and Pamela seemed happy together as a married couple.

But all Drakath required of Pamela was to provide him with an male heir which is something she seemed unable to do.

Louis was now a ten year old boy. He wore a simple white shirt with a black and gold striped ribbon tied around his collar with a golden skull. He also wore a dark brown blazer and light brown shorts with a belt with a gold hourglass. He wore knee length white socks and black shoes with gold laces.

Andromeda was now a seven year old with long golden blonde hair with a blue stripped bow at the centre of the fringe. She wore a short, blue, ruffled capelet laced with a stripped light blue bow with a blue cross imprinted on each extremity; a white, long sleeved, ruffled shirt tied at her waist by a blue sash; a blue, knee-height, petticoated skirt patterned by a sole line of white crosses. Beneath she wore white tights with blue Mary Jane shoes, each adorned with a white cross and blue bows.

Harriet Butterfly was a five year old with sandy brown hair, dark grey purple eyes, fair skin and had cherry red taurus star symbol shaped marks on her cheeks. She wore a dark pink headband with white ruffled outline, a pink ribbon on both sides of her head. She wore a pink puff-shouldered mini cardigan, which had a lacy collar and hem. Her dress was in two parts; a top that is a lighter pink than her cardigan and a whiter skirt that had a frilly hem. She wore pink flats resembling ballerina shoes with pink ribbons laced up to her mid calf.

Andromeda rushed forward and ended up tripping on the grass by a rock.

"Andromeda."Pamela said. "Come here, did that hurt?"

"Mama."Andromeda cried as she went up to her mother.

"My angel, was that sore? Let me have a look."Pamela suggested and looked at Andromeda's knee that had a small scratch on it. "Was it this knee?"

Andromeda nodded in response.

Pamela used a bit of magic to remove the small wound in Andromeda's knee.

"I think you shall live."Pamela commented.

Andromeda slowly stood up.

"That depends if you don't keep falling down."Harriet joked with a smirk.

Louis frowned. "Harriet."

Harriet giggled mischievously.

"Right, first to the bridge on my count."Pamela admitted kindly. "One, two, three, go!"

Louis, Andromeda and Harriet laughed as they started chasing each other.

"Come on, Harryo."Louis encouraged.

"No, I'm gonna catch her!"Andromeda argued.

"I'm gonna catch you both!"Harriet stated.

Pamela smiled and giggled softly seeing her children playing and getting along.

"Up and down."Shirley said smugly as she walked forward. "Up and down. Why can't we recover like that?"

"It's too far to fall now."Pamela replied warmly.

"Your children are lovely, Pam."Shirley admitted.

"Thank you."Pamela answered and looked at Shirley. "Do you have any kids?"

"I do."Shirley replied. "Three boys."

"Three boys."Pamela repeated with a sad smile. "What the king wouldn't give for one of them."

Shirley gives Pamela a confused expression that went away when looking at her friend's children.

"Besides not having cheek marks, your son is least like you."Shirley commented.

"Yes, I'm sure you know the story."Pamela responded. "My husband's son was born before we married. His mother was a maid. The maid died and we took the child."

"I'm sorry."Shirley apologised. "Have I spoken out of turn?"

"No."Pamela replied. "It's the worst-kept secret in Avalon. His ten years old now."

"And you love him?"Shirley asked.

"Of course I do."Pamela answered. "The same as all my children. Come and meet them."

"Get off!"Louis voice rang out. "You two weigh a ton!"

Pamela and Shirley notice Andromeda and Harriet pinning Louis down on the grass.

"Kids!"Pamela called out. "Come and meet my best friend, Lady Somerset."

Afterwards...

A servant brought a glass of blue liquid to Pamela.

"Thank you."Pamela responded kindly.

"What's that?"Shirley asked.

"Miracle water."Pamela commented. "It's the sulfur that makes it smell so bad."

"And you really have to drink it?"Shirley questioned in disbelief.

"Twice a day every week."Pamela replied. "They said it will help me to bear sons."

"Do you have any reason to believe you cannot birth a male?"Shirley asked.

"Not really."Pamela answered while blushing a little. "But the people certainly wished Harriet was a boy."

The brunette took a sip of the water.

Shirley notice a few people were looking at Pamela and were whispering excitedly at each other.

"Everybody is staring at you."Shirley stated.

Pamela notice a red rash behind Shirley's neck.

"What's that on your neck?"Pamela asked.

Shirley looked away and didn't respond.

"Shirley?"Pamela asked.

Shirley turned to look at her best friend.

"It's not illegal for a man to beat his wife with a stick unless the stick is thicker than his thumb."Shirley answered quietly.

"Your husband?"Pamela said in disbelief. "But he can't have done that!"

"Well, considering what else he's done to me, that's not the worst."Shirley replied.

Pamela frowned. "What could possibly be worse?"

"He's taken my children."Shirley answered. "He won't let me see them."

"And what do you propose to do?"Pamela asked.

"Really, I'm at my wits end."Shirley answered sadly. "The law supports my husband."

"In the meantime, where shall you stay?"Pamela asked.

"Continue lodging, till the money runs out."Shirley responded with a hint of sadness.

Pamela smiled. "I think I can help you with that."

In the Banquet Hall...

Drakath, Pamela and Shirley were having lunch together.

"Drakath?"Pamela said. "Shirley doesn't have to meet her parents on the continent for some time. She hardly ever visits Mewni at all. It's a pity, that. You see, she doesn't have anywhere to stay. Problem there."

"Well, why doesn't she stay with us?"Drakath suggested. "For a while, at least for a while."

"Thank you."Shirley remarked softly.

Pamela smiled at her husband's request.

In the Children's Bedroom...

Louis and Harriet were playing sword fight in their bedroom using wooden swords.

Louis wore his dark blue pyjamas and Harriet wore her bright grey night dress with her hair tied into two braided ponytails.

"You might as well give up, Harriet!"Louis stated with a smirk.

"Give up?"Harriet questioned smugly. "I think you should give up, Louie!"

"I'll slash you to ribbons!"Louis admitted.

"And I'll cut you to pieces!"Harriet responded.

Then Andromeda came into the room while holding her diary.

Andromeda wore an orange nightgown and black ballet slippers.

"Hey Andy."Louis greeted. "Wanna play with us?"

"No, thanks."Andromeda answered. "I'm too tired to do anything."

"Why do you have your diary then?"Harriet questioned with a smirk.

"I have found the perfect hiding place for my new diary."Andromeda replied. "After all, at our father's court you can be send to the tower or have your head chopped off for saying the wrong things or choosing the wrong friends."

"Or get burned for doing something very bad."Louis added as he dodged Harriet's sword.

Andromeda bend down and placed her diary on the bottom shelf of the white cupboard that contained a few items and books.

"Prepare to lose, Louie!"Harriet stated.

"This is far from over!"Louis complemented.

Harriet grinned and her sword catches fire causing Louis to get nervous.

"Harriet, mum said not to play with fire when we are at home."Andromeda reminded.

"Aw come on!"Harriet complained as she set the fire on her wooden sword off. "I'm born with Lucitor powers! I am supposed to use them!"

"Your only half demon because Grandma Ferelith was a demon."Andromeda stated firmly as she took out an hourglass and placed it on a desk.

"Yeah, but the sad fact is grandma wasn't a nice person and that's why mum never got along with her."Harriet commented bitterly and looked at Louis. "Hey Louie, when you become king, your going to allow me to use my powers freely, right?"

"I am not going to be king."Louis stated.

"Yes, you will be."Andromeda assured. "Your older than me and Harriet."

"Yeah and if we ever ended up getting a baby brother, nothing will change."Harriet complemented. "Your still going to be king, right?"

"A boy with a legitimate claim is more valuable to a king, girls."Louis admitted sadly.

Andromeda smirked. "I don't think so."

"Me neither."Harriet added.

The three siblings hugged each other.

In Drakath's Chamber...

Shirley was stitching the wound on Drakath's chest that he got on the fight in the field of Varanas.

"Poor you, Your Majesty."Shirley said.

"Pour the ointment over it."Drakath ordered.

Shirley picked up the small bottle and sniffed the mixer in it.

"I smell sorrel and linseed."Shirley commented with a smile.

"Meadow plant, crushed pearls, herb of grace, other things."Drakath commented with a frown. "I concocted it myself. I don't trust my physicians."

Shirley placed the mixer in a small towel on Drakath's chest causing him to wince in pain.

"Hold still otherwise the wound will grow worse."Shirley instructed.

"You're very brave, Lady Somerset."Drakath admitted with a smile. "Braver, I think, than my captains and much more beautiful."

Shirley carefully wiped the towel on the king's wound and it started to vanish.

"There, it's done."Shirley said softly. "I trust Your Majesty is more comfortable."

Drakath carefully held Shirley's hand causing her to look at him.

"Does Your Majesty wish me to stay?"Shirley asked.

Drakath didn't reply and continued looking at Shirley.

Shirley slowly unties her hair loose and removes her green robe, revealing her white night gown before going next to Drakath.

In the Children's Bedroom...

Louis and Harriet were fast asleep in their beds except Andromeda, who was talking to Twinkle, her little unicorn that was inside her magic diary.

Twinkle had light blue triangular horn that is decorated with a golden tiara that has a fuchsia star on it. She had hooves and round ears that have pink inner parts and her wings were small and pink.

"Grown ups are strange."Andromeda said softly.

"What makes you say that?"Twinkle asked.

"How can someone be in love with two people at the same time?"Andromeda quesioned.

"You don't think it's possible?"Twinkle responded.

"If you and someone were tied together by the red strings of faith, isn't that the person you can love?"Andromeda suggested. "Or is that everyone has more than one red string?"

"Some people must experience many loves in order to find one faith that is chosen for them."Twinkle admitted.

"Wow, really?"Andromeda asked in surprise and frowned. "Being a grown up sounds hard."

The Next Morning...

Drakath sat with the nobles of his council after having breakfast with his family.

"My Lords, a great victory was had by us at the fields of Varanas. Thanks to Lord Hertford, several of their nobles were captured and are held here at our pleasure."Drakath said in amusement. "But that, my lords, is not the end to our good news. Distracted by his grievous defeat, the King of Varanas took to his bed and died just three days ago. And on that day, his wife gave birth to their only child. However it was not the son and heir they had hoped for, but a girl."

The council members clapped at the news.

"Yes."Criston remarked.

"Excellent."Sir Murmison complemented.

"Your Majesty, I think we should see it as an act of divine intervention, this passing of the Varanas crown to a very young female."Baelor stated.

"This is going to be very happy celebration for all of us."Drakath chuckled.

In Pamela's Chambers...

Pamela sat down on a chair, sewing a purple fabric.

"Majesty."Isobel said.

"Yes?"Pamela asked.

"Lady Lisle has written to me asking If your majesty might find a place in your household for one of her two daughters."Isobel admitted. "I told her I would mention it to you. "

"Have you warned the lady lisle that life at Avalon is full of pride, envy, scorn and derision? If you have, then send them to me."Pamela responded. "I'll choose one of them. Remember, they must bring two sets of clothes: one of damask and the other one satin."

"As you wish."Isobel remarked.

Isobel's smiled vanished when she saw a strawberry blonde haired maiden known as Nell Wayte walked by.

"Your Majesty."Nell greeted with a bow.

"Madam."Pamela said kindly.

Nell walked away to join the other ladies in waiting.

"Pam."Isobel said with a frown. "I do not know whether to tell you, but the King has taken Lady Wayte as mistress."

Pamela felt her heart break, hearing that her husband has had another lover.

"He must do as he will."Pamela stated with a weak smile. "It is we, Isobel, must always honour and obey."

Isobel nodded and stared at her friend with a sad look.

"Do not feel sorry for me."Pamela assured. "For I have great reasons to be happy."

"Why?"Isobel asked with a hint of confusion.

"My husband is planning to have a grand ball to celebrate the victory against his cousin, the King of Varanas."Pamela commented. "So hopefully that will cheer me up."

"Very well."Isobel stated.

Later that Evening...

There was grand masquerade ball in a spectacular candle-lit ballroom of Avalon's castle.

Musicians played a beautiful song with their instruments.

Large formations of dancers performed elaborately choreographed moves.

Louis, Andromeda and Harriet were in the buffet table, tasting the cakes they like.

Pamela sat on her throne watching the sight with a blank, distant expression.

The Queen of Avalon notice Drakath talking with Shirley causing her to look concerned for a moment before her suspicion went away.

"It's no fun, if I sit and don't dance with someone."Pamela muttered with a sad frown.

Then a man with orange hair wearing a black tuxedo and a white mask walked up to Pamela.

"Why look so glum, Your Highness?"Valen asked.

"What reason have I to be happy?"Pamela questioned.

"You have a king that loves you."Valen stated.

"I guess I do."Pamela said. "Most of the times."

Valen held out his gloved hand.

"May I have this dance?"Valen asked kindly.

Pamela took Valen's hand and they started dancing in the ballroom.

"This is like a dream to be able to dance this pleasantly."Pamela thought. "Everything all the sudden feels so right..."

"Do I know you?"Pamela asked.

"You know me, Pam but not half as well as I know you."Valen responded with a smile. "I know you better than anyone here. And love you better than anyone here, too. And if I was your husband instead of Drakath, one thing I know...I would never have let you go."

Pamela felt surprised of what the gentleman just said as he used his left hand to spun her doing a waltz underarm turn.

Isobel and Esther watched the duo in curiosity.

"Wow that guy sure knows how to dance."Isobel remarked.

"But look at Pam, she suddenly looks a lot happier."Esther admitted.

"Do you know about..."Isobel started.

Esther frowned and nodded.

Valen and Pamela ended their dancing causing the audience to clap at them.

"Looks like the people enjoyed seeing you dance."Valen said.

"Yeah and you as well."Pamela responded shyly.

A hand was placed on Pamela's shoulder causing her to look up and see Drakath.

"Nice to see you again."Drakath remarked.

"Yes."Valen said simply and removed his mask revealing his eyes. "Although I remembered trying to leave you behind when your castle was taken hostage."

"Valen."Pamela replied in astonishment. "My gosh, your all grown up."

"So are you...far more beautiful I mean."Valen stated.

Pamela smiled and blushed while Drakath frowned in jealousy.

"Your still the adorable little boy I remembered."Pamela chuckled.

Valen laughed lightly.

"Well, anyway enjoy the rest of the evening, Valen."Drakath responded with a fake smile.

"I will."Valen assured and walked away. "See you around, Pam."

Pamela gives Valen a small wave.

"Don't let me catch you hanging around with him."Drakath reminded.

"Why?"Pamela asked with a smirk. "Are you jealous?"

"Your my queen and my wife, act like one."Drakath whispered firmly.

Pamela fell silent and Drakath walked away.

Harriet walked up to Pamela.

"Mama, are you okay?"Harriet asked brightly.

"Yeah, everything is just fine."Pamela assured with a small smile.
