Mary had looked a bit worried when she came out of the bathroom that morning, fidgeting and looking a bit lost, like she had before when they had first met. He asked her what was wrong but she shook her head, fidgeting with the edge of her dress.
John passed along the breakfast sandwiches and drinks, hot chocolate for Sam and Dean, coffee for him and Mary. He still wasn't sure if she liked coffee but she copied whatever he was drinking so for the time being, coffee. He also asked her what was wrong but she just shook her head, sipping at her coffee.
Shooting another look at her John sat on the bed next to the boys, slowly eating and taking sips of his coffee in between. The boys leaned against his sides, still half laying down as they did the same.
"We're going to leave town again and drive for a bit." John told them, finishing his sandwich and going to pull his map out. "I'm actually thinking we go south, somewhere warm."
He turned to Mary, needing to call her name a few times to get her attention. "I know you like the dress but you can't wear it right now when we leave. But when we get to the south you can, it'll be warm enough."
Mary slowly nodded, fidgeting in place a few times. She seemed to be thinking about something else, not really paying attention to what he was saying.
John stared at her for a moment before he turned to the boys. "Dean, mind helping Sammy out to brush his teeth?"
Dean nodded and slowly slid down the bed with Sam, holding his hand as the both of them went to the bathroom.
John waited to hear the water running from the sink before he turned back to Mary, leaning forward slightly. "Mary, what's wrong?" he asked softly.
Mary chewed on her bottom lip for a moment before she answered. "Blood." she told him.
His heart skipped a beat at the mention, he wasn't sure what she meant at that, what about blood and why would she be...oh.
Oh.
"You mean...your period." he said, feeling his cheeks heat up. He vaguely remembered his mother going through this every month and tried to dimly remember what she used to do to take care of it.
He couldn't remember that much in all honesty.
"Okay so, we'll stop by a store and get you whatever you need." John said. "What did...what did you used to do before?"
"Nothing." Mary told him. "If I went to a bar I would grab a lot of...tissues and use that." she waved her hand between her legs. "The vampires liked it so they didn't want it to be wiped away."
John nodded, breathing out slowly and leaning up to kiss her forehead. "There are lots of things you can use, you don't need to worry about it."
It was easier said than done to be honest and it found the four of them in Walmart in the hygiene department, staring at the boxes completely lost.
So apparently there were two options, pads and tampons, and he had no idea which one his mother had used so now...he had no idea what to do. He reached out for one of the boxes, the tampons, and read the directions on the side to try to make sense of it.
He did the same for the box of pads and then turned to Mary, clearing his throat and trying to will the blush on his face to go away.
"There are two options apparently, one you put on your underwear and one you put inside of yourself." John told her, seeing her wrinkle her nose at the second one. "You want the one on your underwear?"
Mary nodded, smiling at that. John smiled back at her and grabbed another box, better safe than sorry, and started towards the cashier. He paused, remembering something his mom had enjoyed, and grabbed a few chocolate bars for her and the boys, much to the boys delight.
"Alright, after this we start driving and we won't stop for a bit." he told them, getting in line for the cashier. "We'll figure out exactly where we want to go on the way there."
