"If you have something worth fighting for, then fight for it." ~Unknown
Chapter 108- The Fight
We met with the wolves in the early hours of Friday morning. Jasper thought it'd be beneficial if we went over one last game plan. Everyone wore the Eye of Horus. Jacob had gotten his last night.
"Thank you for meeting us," Jasper said, more to Sam than to the others.
"It's no problem," I translated for Sam. "Alice and I thought it might be a good idea that we clarify the plan so there will be no problems."
"I agree," Jasper said. "Now before we came here, Alice looked ahead to the newborns coming here. They lost one, so they're down to eighteen. She saw one make the decision to leave the army in the early hours of this morning."
"Nine for us and nine for you?" Sam asked.
"Yes. If you include the creators, there are twenty, but Alice is sure that one of the creators, Victoria, won't be in the battlefield. She's going to go search for Edward and Bella."
"Who will take the other one?"
"He'll be looking for Alice," Jasper said,.
"But," I continued, looking at Sam, "there is also a good chance that after Riley realizes Victoria isn't fighting with them, he'll follow her."
Alice, if you need any extra help—"
"Thanks, Sam," I smiled, "but I think I'll be okay."
"Keep in mind that Alice will be fighting with magic, and fighting with magic nearby is going to be tricky. If you see Alice fighting someone, don't try to help or you may get hit instead."
"Understood," I said for Sam. "I've already talked to the others."
"So you and your pack will be waiting in the woods when the newborns come, correct?"
"Yes. Then we will bring them here to the field."
"Alice is going to wait until there are about five left before she casts Protego Diabolica," Jasper said. It'll go to all ends of the field just in cast some of them are hiding."
So if any of the wolves still have a problem with you—"
"Then they need to be extremely careful. Keep count and when they see the numbers go down, they need to get out as quickly as they can."
I understand.
"I gather Jacob, Leah, and Paul have the most problems with me."
Yes, Sam said slowly. I'm sorry. I couldn't convince them. Jacob...I think his comes back to Bella.
A few of the other wolves snickered.
"Just do the best that you can to keep him away from the field when I cast the spell. I'll keep it contained to the field."
Sam nodded.
"What about the other wolves," Jasper asked me, catching onto the conversation.
"He says that Quil, Embry, and Jared like me."
"And the other two? The small ones?"
Brady and Collin, Sam said, nodding his head to the two small wolves. They like you but they won't be staying. They'll be going back to the reservation soon. They came here from a patrol, but they're leaving.
I nodded and turned to Jasper.
"The young wolves over there, Colin and Brady. They won't be fighting."
There were two soft whines behind me.
"How old are they?" I asked Sam.
Thirteen. Both of them.
I watched the two small wolves for a moment. I approached them, and sat down in front of where they were laying.
"It's a noble thing to protect your family," I told the boys.
We want to fight, the wolf that looked like Jacob whined. It's not fair.
"It's plenty fair," I told him. "There will always be good and bad people. Vampires are no different. One day you'll get the chance. But there is always a chance that some of the vampires that we're fighting against today will come to La Push. If they do, then you get a chance to fight those vampires. For now, go back to La Push, and be the protector that the reservation and the town needs."
The two young wolves watched me carefully before they turned to Sam and raised to their feet, heading back in the direction of the reservation.
Thank you, Sam said as I stood back up. I've been spending the entire week explaining to them why they can't fight, but I couldn't seem to do it.
"Did I help?" I asked.
Yes, Sam said.
How'd you do it? Paul demanded.
I shrugged.
"I don't know. I guess I've just been in their shoes."
"What's wrong?" Carlisle asked, speaking for the first time since we've been here.
"Nothing important," I said. "The young wolves didn't think it was fair that they won't get to fight, but I told them that one day they will, and there is still a possibility that some of the newborns will smell Bella near the reservation and head there."
"When will they come?"
"An hour," I said, turning to look at the sun.
I turned back to Sam.
"Is Seth there?"
He's not far.
"Tell him to tell Edward to look for the sky. That's how they'll know the fight has started."
Sam nodded, and I heard Seth confirm that he had understood.
"We're ready," I told Jasper.
"What's next?" Rosalie asked.
"Now we wait," I said.
I pulled a piece of paper from my back pocket and raised a hand over it.
"Augustior Homonculoum," I murmured.
On the piece of paper a map of Forks, La Push, and Seattle. I could see footprints begin to form. Leading the charge was Riley Biers.
"Look," I told Jasper, pointing at the foot prints. "They're close."
Jasper looked at the map and pointed to a spot on the edge of Seattle.
"Look there," he said. "Jane, Dimitri, Felix, and Alec."
"I told you what my family said."
"The way Edward talks, these three like you very much," he said, pointing to Dimitri, Felix, and Alec. "I don't think they'll hurt you."
"Jane would," I said. She doesn't like me at all."
"But you can block her out, right?"
I nodded.
"Her gift is an attack on the mind," I said, tapping his temple. "Occlumency works on attacks against the mind."
"You have your mind closed off?"
I nodded.
"I don't know the powers of these newborns. I don't know which ones can attack the mind, and I can't help the rest of you if I'm being attacked."
Jasper nodded and looked back down at the map.
"They're moving quickly,"I commented, trailing my finger down the map. "They'll likely be here in less than an hour."
"They're motivated," Jasper said.
"I don't think Protego Diabolica should wait until the end," I said. "It would probably be most effective in the first wave. It's going to slow them down."
"Hey, Sam?" Jasper asked, turning to face the wolf who appeared to be barking orders at his pack.
"Yes?" I answered for Sam.
"How far you will you be?"
"Most likely a few miles out. Alice says the newborns are going around, and will probably stay far away so they won't be heard. Not until the last second."
Jasper turned to me.
"Will that work for you?"
I nodded and turned to Sam.
"Don't come back to the field until you see two green sparks in the sky."
We can do that, Sam said. We'll be watching the sky.
I nodded and looked down at the map.
"Go, quickly. They'll be here soon."
The wolves all jumped to their feet, running from the field.
I watched the map carefully. They would be here in five minutes.
I looked up and pointed my wand to the sky.
"What is she doing?" Rosalie asked as I started to send spells into the sky.
"She's closing them in," Jasper said. "They can't run now. If they do, they'll die."
"How far is the barrier going?" Carlisle asked.
"To the mountains. Victoria is going to look for Edward and Bella there. If Victoria tries to run, she'll die. She's also casting a charm that will hide the sparks she sends into the sky from the people in Forks." Jasper paused and took the map out of my pocket.
"They've stopped moving, Alice."
"They're watching the sky," I said. "They've seen nothing like this before."
I pointed my wand to the trees and set off another spell.
"What was that?" Esme asked.
"An alarm," I said. "When they reach the end of the trail to split up, we'll hear it. So will the wolves."
"When did you guys plan this?"
"Last night," I said with a small smile.
"It's a good plan," Carlisle said with a smile.
After another moment, we could hear the high screams come from the end of the trail. I quickly sent red sparks into the sky.
"All of you, in a circle around me, now!" I said, as I pointed my wand out in front of me. "Protego Diabolica!"
The black flames swelled up around me, and I began to guide it to the ends of the field.
It took another moment before the first two newborns came running into the field, running straight into the fire. Their screams rang through the forest, and the others came to a halting stop outside of the fire.
"Wait!" the vampire in front said, throwing his hands up to stop the others. They watched in horror as their teammates burned to ash. I waved my wand again, and the flame disappeared. "That one here!" the first vampire said pointing directly at me. "She's the one Riley talked about!"
"Go, Alice!" Jasper said as I sent two green sparks into the sky.
I ducked under Jasper's arm, as the others split up. The newborns set into the field, four of the eight that entered the field set off after me, while the other four went after Carlisle, Esme, Jasper, Emmett, and Rosalie.
I pointed my wand at the one closest to me.
"Avada Kedavra!"
The green bolt hit him square in the chest. He crumpled to the ground, and the other three watched in horror.
"Get her!" the large one yelled, taking off after me again. The other two went around the other side in an attempt to block me in.
I looked to where Jasper was before Apparating next to him. I grabbed the arm of the newborn who had Jasper in a headlock, flinging myself onto his back.
Jasper was able to get free, and he headed after one of the other vampires who was running after us as I tore the head off of the large vampire.
My eyes quickly scanned the field, and as they did, I saw a young vampire heading for the trees. She was the ninth newborn we were missing.
"Carlisle!" I yelled, as he was closest to her. "There!"
Carlisle sped off in the direction that I pointed in and as I turned to continue the fight, the big vampire that had been chasing me before rammed straight into my gut and pinning me to the ground. My wand flew from my hands, landing next to Rosalie's foot. She swooped down and picked it up as she ducked out of the way of the vampire who went to hit her.
"Crucio!" I yelled, hitting the vampire on top of me in the chest.
Much like the two vampires who had been caught in the black fire, the big one at my feet screamed so loudly that it rang through the trees.
"Rosalie! My wand!" I called.
She tossed it to me, and I pointed it directly at his chest.
"Avada Kedavra!"
From the far end of the field, the wolves came hurtling in, chasing after the final vampire.
Paul caught him right before he came hurtling into me. Almost as quickly as it had started, the fight was over.
"Alice?" Jasper called to me. I looked up at him and grinned before flying to him.
He caught me before I crashed into him and took my face in his hands.
"Ali, listen to me for a moment."
His face was serious and I frowned.
"What is it?"
"Do you have anything, a spell or a potion that will take her sight from her."
I peered around Jasper and looked at the girl sitting behind Jasper. She looked at me with wide eyes.
I shook my head.
"None that I can think of right now, or none that I have on me at least."
"Could you make a spell?"
"Not in this short amount of time," I said. "The most I can do is put the Imperius Curse on her."
Jasper shook his head.
"We didn't get clearance for that."
"I'm sorry, Jazz," I murmured.
"No, don't worry," he smiled. "I can manage."
He gave me a quick kiss before he turned back to the girl.
"Come with us. Don't make one rash move or I will take you down." Jasper paused, and looked from me to the girl. "Close your eyes."
"Jazz—" I started slowly, but Jasper shook his head and squeezed my hand.
"Do it," he told the girl. Once she closed her eyes, he turned back to me. "Follow the sound of my voice and don't open your eyes. You look, you lose, got it?"
She gave a small nod.
"This way," Jasper said to the girl before he snaked an arm around my waist and pulled me with them.
He guided the newborn towards the center of the field, and when we got to her, he let me go and turned back to the newborn.
"Sit here. Eyes closed."
She dropped to the ground quickly and Jasper turned back to me. It was then that I noticed the bite marks on his left forearm.
"Jasper!" I gasped, pulling his arm to me. When did this happen? I didn't see—"
Jasper cut me off with a swift peck on the lips and smiled.
"I'm fine, Darlin'. You don't need to worry about me."
"When did this happen?" I repeated.
"Remember when there was a group of them chasing after you?"
I nodded.
"The girl in that group had done it. It was while you were pinned down.
Raoul the young girl thought. He was the one who pinned her down.
"The newborn says his name is Raoul,"I whispered in Jasper's ear. "The one that pinned me down."
"What's she thinking about now?"
"Something Riley said to them. About Victoria killing them…and somebody named Diego."
I paused as I dug around in her memory.
"Oh, Jazz," I whispered. "She lost her mate."
Jasper watched me with sad eyes for a moment.
The next several moments seemed to happen all at once. As I looked behind me, I saw a vampire, one of the newborns, break through the trees right behind Sam.
"Sam, look out!" I roared, pulling out my wand, running towards him. I pointed it at the newborn but he crashed into me before I could get anything out.
My wand flew out of my hands and across the field for the second time that day.
Jasper watched me in horror as he kept the newborn under his watch tame. Leah came to my rescue, but I could see that she wasn't moving quick enough, and the newborn on top of me saw it too.
"Leah, don't!" I yelled.
Jacob moved faster than she did, but as he collided with the newborn, the newborn was able to get his arms around Jacob. Then I heard the bones crunch.
The newborn dropped Jacob and came back after me.
"Avada Kedavra!" I yelled, pushing my hands out in front of me. The newborn crumpled to the ground and Sam leapt forward to finish the newborn off.
As Esme came to help me to my feet, Carlisle moved quickly through the wolves.
Howling spread through the field. It was a mix of Jacob's and the other wolves who could feel it.
As I went to help Carlisle, a vision stopped me in my tracks.
Jane, Dimitri, Felix, and Alec made their way through the trees.
"It's time to see what has become of the Cullen clan," Jane sneered as she quickined her pace.
The vision went black and my eyes opened wide.
"Sam!" I hollered, running to him.
Alice, what is it? What's wrong? Sam asked moving closer to me.
"Tell Seth to tell Edward that he and Bella need to get down here quickly. The Volturi is coming. You guys have to get Jacob out of here. If the Volturi learns we've made a truce with werewolves, there will be a mark on all of our heads."
Carlisle wants to come to the reservation later to check on Jacob. Can you come with him?
"I'll see what I can do. I have some potions that might help. I'll let you know when they're gone. Look for the sparks in the sky. Two green sparks."
Sam nodded, and he turned back to his pack barking orders the whole way.
I turned towards the mountains where I saw purple billowing smoke.
"My wand," I realized suddenly. "Where's my wand?"
"I have it, Al," Jasper soothed as I ran towards him. "It's okay. I promise."
"I have to take the warding down," I said. "If they come through it, they'll die, and it will be seen as a direct attack on the Volturi."
I took the wand from Jasper and pointed it to the sky.
The newborn went to open her eyes again and Jasper snarled.
"What is she?" the newborn asked Jasper, pointing a finger at me with her eyes still closed.
"She's more powerful than me and my coven and you and your coven combined."
"That didn't answer my question," she said.
"That's because it's not your business."
I looked to the mountains. There was a pillar of smoke coming out of the trees.
"I can get a rough estimate of where they are," I told Jasper. "I can Apparate to them and bring them here."
Jasper shook his head.
"They'll be here soon, Al."
"Where's my map?"
"Right here."
He held it out to me. I could see the Volturi moving in from the North.
"Sam," I called, going back to where he and the others, who were all human now, were starting to shift around to get to Jacob.
"Go south and around," I told him. "They won't come across you there, but you have to leave now."
"Of course. Thank you, Alice."
I looked back down at the map. They were just now crossing where the barrier had just been.
I could see Bella and Edward's footprints. They were a couple seconds from being in the field.
Jasper took the newborn's head in his hands, ready to kill her if he needed to.
Bella and Edward came in through the field as Jasper fought the newborn who was struggling to get out of Jasper's hold.
"Stop it," he gripped, jerking her back down onto her bottom. "Close your eyes."
"Jazz?" I asked, approaching him. "Is that really necessary?"
"Yes, Alice, it is."
"You never did that to me," I frowned.
"Because you weren't trained to kill," he said through clenched teeth.
I sighed and shook my head.
Time seemed to speed up as we waited for the Volturi to close in on us. I moved from people to people checking for any damage.
"Carlisle — it's been five minutes," Edward was saying as I approached them.
"She'll come around when she's ready, Edward. She's had too much to deal with today. Let her mind protect itself."
"Alice, how long do we have?" Edward demanded, turning to face me.
"Another five minutes. And Bella will open her eyes in thirty-seven seconds. I wouldn't doubt that she can hear us now," I smiled.
"Bella, honey?" Esme said in a soft voice, "can you hear me? You're safe now, dear."
I turned away from them, watching Jasper and the newborn. He gave me an apologetic look, and motioned for me to come back to him with his head.
I made my way over to him and when I got close enough he leaned over to kiss me. I felt a wave of calm wash over me.
"She has to be taught," he told me in a quiet voice.
"What happens when we're not here?" I whispered. "Who watches after her then? She can't come with us."
"Hopefully by the time we leave Forks she'll be trained enough to where she won't need me."
Jasper gave me a soft smile to which I returned.
"Is your arm okay?" I asked.
He nodded.
"I'll live."
"I can give you a potion to help with the pain if that makes you feel better," I offered.
He grinned and shook his head.
"It doesn't even hurt that bad anymore."
I looked back down at the map, searching for the guard members' footprints.
"Three minutes," I called to the others.
Jasper stepped away from the newborn, pushing me slightly behind him as he did so.
"You'd better open your eyes now," he told her in a more gentle voice than before. He turned to me. "Alice, can you go stand with Esme?"
I nodded and turned from him.
I noticed Bella's bewildered expression as she looked at the newborn.
"She surrendered," he told Bella quietly. "That's one I've never seen before. Only Carlisle would think of offering. Jasper doesn't approve."
This news didn't surprise me, and I watched the fire.
"Is Jasper all right?" Bella whispered.
"He's fine. The venom stings."
"He was bitten?"
"He was trying to be everywhere at once. He was trying to protect Alice, make sure she didn't have to do anything outside of casting Protego Diabolica. But Riley had told the newborns to look for the one who was most protected because she had the ability to take out all of them at once. Four of them went after her, and one had her tackled. Jasper was trying to keep the other two from getting to her, and got bit in the process. I don't think he's caught on that Alice doesn't need help from anyone."
"Overprotective fool," I said to Jasper with a small smirk.
There was a light breeze that passed through the field and I noticed that it was easier to smell Bella over the smoke. I wasn't the only one who noticed.
The newborn girl jumped into a crouch snarling. Jasper reacted just as fast snarling at her as well. I pulled my wand from the holster and pointed it at the girl, and quickly cast a Leg-Locking Curse.
"That won't be enough," Edward told me as Jasper fought against the thrashing girl. "She's willing to find any way possible."
"Incarcerous" I said, pointing my wand at the girl again. Ropes shot out of the end and tightly wrapped around her. She let out a blood curdling scream as she fought against the ropes.
Jasper jerked her upwards to where she was sitting up before returning to a crouch in front of the girl.
Carlisle stepped towards them and put a hand on Jasper's arm. I followed right behind. Jasper immediately jumped to his feet and stood between me and the girl.
"Have you changed your mind, young one?" Carlisle asked the girl.. "We don't want to destroy you, but we will if you can't control yourself."
"How can you stand it? I want her."
She ran her hands through the dirt, still fighting against the ropes.
"You must stand it," Carlisle said. "You must exercise control. It is possible, and it is the only thing that will save you now."
"Shouldn't we move away from her?" Bella asked Edward.
"We have to stay here. They are coming to the north end of the clearing now."
"Should I untie her?" I asked as Jasper pushed me back towards the others.
"No," Jasper said. "Leave her be and come on."
He pushed me backwards until we got to the others. He came to a stop when we made it next to Edward, and the two of them seemed to push Bella and I back behind them, as if they needed to protect us from the four vampires that were making their way towards us.
We do, Edward said. Jasper is afraid they're going to try to take you now, and they remain a threat to Bella.
I sighed and peered around Jasper's arm.
"Hmm," Jane said in a dead voice, looking around her at the field as she got closer. Felix and Dimitri grinned at me and offered a small wave.
"Welcome, Jane," Edward greeted.
"I don't understand," she said, turning to the newborn.
"She has surrendered," Edward explained.
"Surrendered?"
Edward shrugged.
"Carlisle gave her the option."
"There are no options for those who break the rules.".
"That's in your hands. As long as she was willing to halt her attack on us, I saw no need to destroy her. She was never taught."
"That is irrelevant," Jane insisted.
"As you wish."
"Aro hoped that we would get far enough west to see you, Carlisle. He sends his regards."
Carlisle nodded.
"I would appreciate it if you would convey mine to him."
"Of course." Jane smiled before she turned to Jasper, looking between his arms at me. "He also asked me to say hello to you, Alice. He had meant to as Kingsley to say something, but Kingsley was in a rush. There was a meeting at the Ministry that he had to attend. "
"When did Aro see Kingsley?"
"He hasn't for a long time," she said. "A few weeks after you made your Unbreakable Vow with Aro, Marcus, and Caius. He wasn't the only one. All magical government meets with us at least twice a year. Aro says it's good to have good communication."
I nodded.
"Of course."
"It appears that you've done our work for us today . . . for the most part."
Her eyes flickered to the newborn.
"Just out of professional curiosity, how many were there? They left quite a wake of destruction in Seattle."
"Eighteen, including this one," Carlisle answered.
"Eighteen?" she repeated, her voice sounding unsure for the first time.
"All brand-new," Carlisle said dismissively. "They were unskilled."
"All?" Her voice was no longer friendly. "Then who was their creator?"
"Her name was Victoria," Edward answered.
"Was?" Jane asked
Edward nodded his head at the forest where he and Bella had come from. She turned her attention to the smoke blowing to the sky.
"This Victoria — she was in addition to the eighteen here?"
"Yes. She had only one other with her. He was not as young as this one here, but no older than a year."
"Twenty," Jane breathed. "Who dealt with the creator?"
"I did," Edward told her.
Jane turned her attention to the girl still tied up by the fire.
"I assume that's your doing, Alice?" Dimitri asked.
"Yes."
"I would appreciate it," Jane said slowly, "if you would untie her. That would make this much easier."
"Of course," I said, stepping between Jasper and Edward, pointing my wand at the girl. As I waved my wand the ropes fell to her sides.
"You there," Jane said to the girl. "Your name."
The newborn didn't respond.
Jane smiled and suddenly screaming rang through the forest.
"Your name?" Jane asked again.
"Bree," the girl choked out. Then suddenly I remembered her picture in the paper. Bree Tanner, sixteen, disappeared a year prior, believed to be murdered by her father when her mother's bone had been found close to six months ago.
"She'll tell you anything you want to know," Edward growled after a moment. . "You don't have to do that."
"Oh, I know. Bree? Were there twenty of you?"
"Nineteen or twenty, maybe more, I don't know! Sara and the one whose name I don't know got in a fight on the way." .
"And this Victoria—did she create you?"
"I don't know," I admitted fearfully. "Riley never said her name. I didn't see that night… it was so dark, and it hurt! He didn't want us to be able to think of her. He said that our thoughts weren't safe."
Jane looked at Edward and then at me before returning her attention to Bree.
"Tell me about Riley," Jane said. "Why did he bring you here?"
"Riley told us that we had to destroy the strange yellow-eyes here. He said it would be easy. He said that the city was theirs, and they were coming to get us. He said once they were gone, all the blood would be ours. He gave us her scent." she pointed at Bella. "He said we would know that we had the right coven, because she would be with them. He said whoever got to her first could have her."
"It looks like Riley was wrong about the easy part," Jane said, a hint of teasing in her tone.
"Yes," Bree agreed. "He also said that there was a vampire with them, and she would be the most protected. Take her out first, and the others wouldn't be so hard. There was a strange fire…" Bree trailed off and Jane turned to me.
"A strange fire?"
"A spell," I told her. "A protective spell. It's called Protego Diabolica. Anybody who is not a threat to me can pass through, those who are a threat will be burned immediately."
"And you determine who a threat is?"
"No," I said, shaking my head. "The fire knows. Magic will always know. I can, however, control it. Keep it small or spread it out."
"Can you show us?" Alec asked. I nodded and stepped away from the others, to an empty part of the field.
I cast the spell non-verbally, and turned to the members of the Volturi.
"The fire will know if you are a threat or not. Jasper could walk through with no problem. Bree, on the other hand, she would burn."
"And one of us?" Felix asked.
"I'm not sure. I don't believe you pose a threat to me, but then again I don't know everything. But you're more than willing to give it a try. Just remember, I did warn you."
"I'll try," Dimitri said, stepping towards me. He walked through the fire with ease. Dimitri meant me no harm. But I was positive that Jane wouldn't make it through.
I waved my wand again, and the fire disappeared. I returned to Jasper's side, and Jane turned to Bree.
"Continue."
"I don't know what happened. We split up, but the others never Riley left us, and he didn't come to help like he then it was so confusing, and everybody was in pieces. I was afraid. I wanted to run away." Bree nodded at Carlisle. "That one said they wouldn't hurt me if I stopped fighting."
"Ah, but that wasn't his gift to offer, young one," Jane said. "Broken rules demand a consequence."
Jane turned to Carlisle, and glanced at me.
"Are you sure you got all of them? The other half that split off?"
Carlisle nodded. "We split up, too. Alice, Jasper, and myself stayed here in the field. The others went after the other group. Alice saw them split up."
"I can't deny that I'm impressed," Jane said.
"Yes," the three vampires behind Jane all agreed.
"I've never seen a coven escape this magnitude of offensive intact. However, I suppose nobody has anything like Alice." Jane continued. "Do you know what was behind it? It seems like extreme behavior, considering the way you live here. And why was the girl the key?"
Victoria held a grudge against Bella."
"This one," Jane said as she laughed at Bella, "seems to bring out bizarrely strong reactions in our kind."
She gave Bella the same smile she had given Bree a few moments before.
"Would you please not do that?" Edward asked.
"Just checking. No harm done, apparently."
She turned her smile to me and before I had the chance to close off my mind, I felt the fiery knives picking at my skin. I clenched my jaw as I fell to the ground. Jasper snarled next to me as I patted his leg, closing my mind from everything.
Jane laughed again.
"Your reaction time is much quicker here than it was in Volterra, Alice," Jane said.
"Why did you do that?" Jasper asked through his teeth as he helped me up.
"You must be Jasper," Jane said with a small smile.
"Yes," he said.
"Ms. Alice spoke highly of you," Alec told him.
"Don't worry, Jazz," I said with a smile. "I'm fine. Jane means me no harm. She was just wondering if I could still make myself immune to her which leads me to believe she's been practicing."
Jane grinned and nodded.
"Precisely."
"Oh, Ms. Alice?" Alec asked, drawing my attention to him.
"Yes?"
"Aro told us if we got far enough to see you to reoffer you a place in the guard, and to offer your husband a place as well."
"Tell Aro we said no that you, but we appreciate the offer," I said.
"Well, it appears that there's not much left for us to do," Jane said, in a monotone voice. "Odd. We're not used to being rendered unnecessary. It's too bad we missed the fight. It sounds like it would have been entertaining to watch."
"Yes," Edward said smugly.. "And you were so close. It's a shame you didn't arrive just a half hour earlier. Perhaps then you could have fulfilled your purpose here."
So the redhead is the mind reader, Bree thought. I turned my head to her and she looked at me and frowned.
"Yes." Jane said as I kept eye contact with Bree. "Quite a pity how things turned out, isn't it?"
Can you hear me too? Bree asked.
I gave her a slight nod.
Are there two mind readers?
I nodded again.
Did you hear what I said? They came for Victoria and Riley in Seattle.
I nodded for a third time to let her know I understood. I had already known this, but it seemed to comfort her in making sure that we knew.
Jane turned to Bree and Bree glanced at Edward and I.
Thanks.
"Felix?" Jane said.
"Wait," Edward said, much too loudly before he turned to Carlisle. "We could explain the rules to the young one. She doesn't seem unwilling to learn. She didn't know what she was doing."
"Of course," Carlisle said eagerly, looking at Jane. "We would certainly be prepared to take responsibility for Bree."
"We don't make exceptions," Jane told Carlisle and Edward. "And we don't give second chances. It's bad for our reputation. Which reminds me…Caius will be so interested to hear that you're still human, Bella. Perhaps he'll decide to visit."
"The date has been set," I said. "Perhaps we'll come to visit you in a few months."
"Take care of that Felix," Jane said as if I hadn't spoken at all. "I'd like to go home."
"Don't watch," Edward murmured to Bella as Jasper stepped closer to me, wrapping his arms around my shoulders almost protectively.
Felix grew closer and closer to the girl who had now closed her eyes.
Tell Carlisle and Esme I said thank you for everything, Bree thought.
She didn't scream as Felix tore her head from her body and threw what was left into the fire surrounding us.
I turned to Edward.
Did you hear? I asked.
Yes, he said.
"Come," Jane said. Alec, Felix, and Dimitri all gave me a wave before they followed Jane through the smoke and out of the field.
I pulled my wand out of the holster and pointed it to the sky. I sent up two green sparks, and from somewhere far away, I could hear a wolf's howl.
Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed the chapter! We've now made it through Eclipse! So the next two chapters take place between Eclipse and Breaking Dawn, where the epilogue would traditionally be. The next chapter will be kind of long because there are several key points to that chapter.
Also, in regards to the spell that Alice used to make the map, on the Wiki page, it says that it was exclusive to humans, and said nothing about human like creatures. I assumed it would work considering that Remus Lupin showed up on the map, but then again, he wasn't always a werewolf. So I decided that for the purposes of looking solely at vampires, I would create a new spell: Augustior Homonculoum. Most if not all spells in Harry Potter are plays on Latin words, so this made the four years that I studied Latin suddenly useful. Augustior means super and combined with Homon, which means humans, it's a locator for superhumans.
Once again, as always, I hope you enjoyed the chapter and I'll see you in the next one!
