Maura had spoken to both Doctor Osmond and Doctor Kingston about taking Alessandra to her old home. The idea was that the little girl might be able to get some closure if she was able to go to the house and get some of her belongings from it as well as to be able to choose some items to remember her biological family by. Following multiple late night discussions with Jane, they eventually decided on when to take her.
Doctor Isles had also had a meeting with her own financial advisor in order to work out how best to protect Alessandra's inheritance as she had been the sole heir to the family estate which included two homes, two boats, and the family savings along with other financial elements. The plan was to put everything possible from the home into storage, well anything that Alessandra did not choose to take back with her, and to rent the house out. The decision to rent it out had been a difficult one to make for Maura, however, as her advisor had pointed out; the money earned from renting it would help to maintain the home and also it would help build up Alessandra's savings even more than it already had been.
"...I don't know if she's ready, Doctor Osmond," Maura said softly, holding the phone against her ear, "I am rather concerned that taking her back there could..."
Alessandra's eyes went wide from the place where she was listening and she ran to hide, but as she ran the door banged slightly.
Maura turned to look in the direction of the noise and saw a flash of the child's curls, "I have to go." She did not wait for a response before she cut off the call and slung the cell phone on to the desk before moving to follow the young girl.
When Maura got to the living room, she found Jane kneeling down near the sofa trying to coach the child out of her hiding space.
'What did she hear Maur'?" Jane asked her as she sat up, "She thinks we're taking her back to the cabin."
Maura dropped down to the floor near the sofa, "No, I promise you Allie, we will never ever take you back there," she said with conviction as she looked directly at the little one.
"But.. but you said..." Alessandra mumbled, sniffling with tears as she continued to hide.
"No, what you heard was me talking to Doctor Osmond about us taking you to see your old house," Maura explained, "Where you used to live with your Mammina and Papa."
"So... you're not going to send me back to the cabin?" the little one questioned as her tears started to calm a little.
Maura reached out her hand, "We aren't sending you anywhere and never will."
"Promise?" came the voice from beneath the sofa.
"I promise you," Doctor Isles insisted with a reassuring smile.
"Pinky promise?" came the reply as Alessandra held out her hand.
Maura smiled softly and nodded, "Definitely," she replied as she linked her little finger with that of Alessandra.
"You too?" she asked as she offered her finger to Jane next.
"Of course," Jane said softly with a smile, repeating the same action as her girlfriend, "How about you come out from under the sofa so I can hug my Tesoro?"
It did not take her long to scramble out from beneath the sofa to launch herself into their arms.
When they arrived at the house, the crime scene tape was gone and the front garden was tidy. Maura had already arranged for a gardener to go and clean up the surrounding land as well as someone to remove the wooden boards from the windows and doors that had been put in place to protect the property. She had also arranged for a cleaner to clean up a little inside as there had been quite a build up of dust whilst the house had not been lived in. Luckily, the crime scene clean up company had dealt with the other type of messes.
As soon as Jane undid Alessandra's straps on her car seat and helped her out of the car, the little girl ran straight up to the house, swinging open the screen door before attempting to open the front door. It was locked. Maura came up behind her and unlocked the front door for her with a soft smile.
"Mammina!" she yelled as she ran into the house, "Papa!"
"Tesoro," Jane called out, catching her in her arms as she tried to run up the stairs, "Remember what we told you?"
Alessandra visibly deflated a little, "There not here anymore," answering quietly.
"That's right," she replied gently with a nod, keeping the child in her embrace, "Do you remember what else we told you?"
"They've gone to heaven with Christian, Tyler, and Kelly," Alessandra said softly as she leaned back slightly, taking a seat on Jane's bent knee, "So, they don't live here anymore."
"That's right," as she said it she pressed a soft kiss to the side of the girl's face, "Now, how about you show us this awesome boat that you were telling us about?"
The distraction worked and her eyes lit up as she stood up, grabbing hold of Jane's hand and dragging her towards the wooden basement door.
Alessandra jumped up slightly in the doorway to be able to reach the light switch that she knew resided there which illuminated the staircase, "When I was smaller, Papa would have to lift me up to turn on the light."
Thomas picked up the little girl and spun her around once before making his way to the basement door, "Are you ready, my little helper?"
"Boat time?" the three-year-old girl questioned.
"Of course!" he exclaimed with a grin, pausing as he got to the top of the stairs.
Alessandra took her cue and turned on the light switch, "Be light!"
He laughed at her exclamation, "Let there be light," he replied.
The little girl held on to the hand rail that went all the way down to the bottom of the basement before she ran over to a bench and clambered up a set of handmade wooden steps. The two women stayed back and watched her as she grabbed hold of a string, turning on the main light of the basement. As she turned from the light pull and looked around the basement, she froze.
"What's wrong?" Maura asked her as she stepped further into the basement.
"It's clean," Alessandra answered as if it were obvious.
Maura looked around the room, "Yes, it is... is it not normally clean?"
"If you're looking for a new project then you could always clean up down here," Michelle suggested as she leaned into her husband.
"It's a workshop, it's not supposed to be clean," Thomas answered with a smirk as he looked over at their daughter who was playing with her doll on their latest boat, "Is it Princess?"
"It's a workshop, it's not supposed to be clean," Alessandra recited in response, before adding, "I'll fix it".
"You had them clean the basement too?" Jane whispered.
"I couldn't leave it the way it was, could I," came the hushed reply.
Alessandra grabbed a couple of handfuls of sawdust from a container in the corner of the room which had a lid on and she went over to the almost finished boat to sprinkle it underneath in a pattern only she knew. Then, she moved over to the work bench and got the sanding block from the side to throw it up into the boat. Once she had done that she moved back to the bench to pull out more tools, scattering them on the work bench, and finally she knelt on the bench to pull down a glass bottle from the top.
"Careful," Jane said, moving forward and getting the glass bottle from the shelf for her, "Where would you like it?"
"Just there," she replied pointing to a spot on the work bench where there was a mason jar.
Jane put it there and smiled softly, "If you need to reach something, we can help you, okay?"
"Okay," came the simple answer as Alessandra moved over in order to pour some of the bourbon from the bottle into the mason jar.
"You are far too young for that, my little turtle," Jane said as she poured it.
"I'm not going to drink it," she said as she put the bottle down and started to put the cap back on, "Papa always used to have some in a jar on the side and sometimes Mammina would bring him coffee in his mug."
The mug she pointed at was white with a chip in the top and a broken handle, it had clearly been decorated by a child as the drawings on the side were done messily in some sort of paint. On the side in a child's handwriting was the word 'Daddy' and then near the bottom it said 'Love Kelly'. Maura moved forward and picked up the mug to take a better look at it but as she looked at it she remembered the photos she had seen of the 8-year-old girl but she also remembered having to carry out her autopsy.
"You miss Kelly and Papa too?" Alessandra asked her, she shuffled over on the bench and wrapped her arms around the woman.
Maura hadn't even realised that her eyes had watered until she was wrapping her arms around her adoptive daughter, holding her close.
