Prompt from PokiThe Ghost: Gave you a break from my constant Roadrat requests for a while, but I'm back and I need my fix lol. I headcannon Junkrat as being somewhere on the Autism spectrum (nothing huge just needs to stim sometimes usually by tinkering, sketching, or some different types of fidgeting) and having ADHD. Was wondering if you could do a fic with a couple moments where people (you know... the JunkBoi haters) notice Jamie stimming and point it out only to have a protective Mako waiting for them.
…
Jamie was sitting in the common room, spinning with the new fidget toy that the nice angel had given to him after their last appointment, humming one of the bouncy green man's new tunes softly to himself. When he wasn't doing this, his mechanical hand tapped out a rhythm on his mechanical leg, actually chewing on the fidget toy when he grew bored of it.
To his side, Mako was reading, not seeming to notice the slightly out-of-tune noise coming from beside him.
The same could not be said for anyone else in the room.
"Knock it off Rat!" Mei snapped, slamming her book shut, as Junkrat shrank away from her slightly, a look of confusion on his face.
"Wot?"
"You're annoying me!"
"How?!"
Before Mei could reply, Mako got to his feet, grunting and holding out his hand to Jamie, helping him to his feet.
Whatever the grunt meant, Jamie beamed and nodded, heading towards the door with a happy little skip, the humming starting up again.
"How can you tolerate that?" Hanzo asked, "What is he doing?"
Mako was silent for a few moments, before he turned to Mei. "Do not tell him to stop again."
"Why not? It's annoying!"
Other in the room nodded, including Hanzo and Torbjorn.
"It's his way of communicating." Mako growled, "He can't tell people if he's stressed or overwhelmed. So, when he's stressed, he does things like that and he calms down."
"And what happens if he stops?" Jesse piped up, sending Hanzo a warning glance as his boyfriend glared at him, "If he doesn't do that?"
"Meltdowns. Panic attacks… things I want to avoid." Mako was clearly glaring at them behind the mask, "Do not tell him to stop again."
Before he could leave, Lucio piped up. "How can you tell when he's having one of these… meltdowns?"
When people turned to the musician in confusion, he shrugged, "It's better to be prepared, right? He's our team-mate, I want to make sure he's okay."
Mako stared at him for a few moments, "He won't be talking or making any noise. That's the first sign. He might be rocking, covering his ears or chewing on his fingers."
"Okay, thanks! We'll keep an eye out."
If they didn't know any better, they would have said that Mako was shocked. He glanced around the room for a moment, before nodding in thanks and leaving.
Once he was out of earshot, the others all turned to Lucio, who beamed at them.
"What? He's our friend, isn't he?"
"Yeah!" Hana called out, "You oldies think you can stick your head in the sand and ignore everything, but that only makes it worse."
The younger ones all nodded in agreement, until Jesse held up his hands in surrender, "Alright, alright, we get your point." He chuckled, "Everyone make a note of what Roadhog just said. There's no reason we can't all be friendly with each other, after all."
"Agreed." Ana backed him up, sending Mako a sideways glance, "Go and take care of your… friend."
Mako grunted, before finally leaving.
Maybe this Overwatch thing wouldn't be so bad after all.
