The distraught cries and screams echoed from the house as Beatrice tried to leave Brooke behind, but the girl kept escaping her grandmother's grasp and running after her mum who had barely made it to the front door.
"Brooke, I told you. This is for the best," She kneeled down, trying to drag her back into the living room but she just skidded across the floor, "Please don't make this any harder."
"YOU'RE LEAVING ME!"
"I am most definitely not leaving you," She breathed out a puff of stiff air, "I've got work to do and I don't want you involved because it's not safe. You remember what we talked about… the rules… when we were on the plane… well, with the Avengers the rule is kids aren't allowed to be there because it's not safe."
"I've been at d' Avengers place all 'd time!"
"Not when there's a mission you haven't." She wished she could dry her tears, she knew all too well how it felt to be left behind when someone thought they were doing what was best for you when really it was just like you'd been abandoned. Rushing to pull back her hair out of her eyes, she looked at her daughter, "You know I love you more than anything in the world and if anything happened to you I – I wouldn't know what to do. It'll only be for a few days and who knows… maybe… maybe…" your dad will be back. But she couldn't bare to give her unrealistic hope, "things might be different. For the better."
Ugly sobs were chocked back, "But why do you have to help with d' Avengers! You never help 'dem!"
"This is a big mission and they need all the help they can get."
"I can help!" Brooke raised her eyes hopefully, "I can!"
"You are helping, baby, by staying here we won't have to worry about you. Please understand that," She practically begged. The look of heart break written across her daughter's face was making it impossible to leave. Like an invisible force her hands wouldn't stray from Brooke's hand, keeping it there.
"I can be super like Iron man and brave like Stevie!"
"I know you want to be brave, cookie, but – sometimes… sometimes being brave is doing the exact thing you don't want to do. Can I tell you the truth?" she was wary of her mum standing by the doorway watching them interacting so leaned down to whisper in Brooke's ear, "I'm really scared to do this mission… absolutely terrified… but I'm going to do it because it's something I have to do, not what I want to do. Please believe me when I say I really don't want to leave you here, but can you be the bravest girl for me… just for a few days and be a hero… save my world by keeping yourself safe. Please…"
Her fit of cries slowly submerged into quite hiccups. With one final hug, Bea was able to untangle herself and flee out of the door.
Outside, her heart pumped erratically. With each passing step the more she wanted to run back, tell her she was sorry and promise she wouldn't have anything to do with the mission. It was worse when Brooke's cries started again and she could still hear them halfway down the street. She wasn't sure how her mum would cope with the five-year old's mood swings and mischievous behaviour. Maybe she should have left a guide book on her to operate her daughter. She did have her difficult days and who knows what she'd be like over here with no one familiar around.
Then she needed to consider what the Avengers mission actually was. Judging but the Hulk's attempts, time travel still seemed a far off solution but… still… she wasn't sure what time travel involved and how dangerous that was… if she went back in time… what if she didn't come back? Would Brooke be left alone with her grandmother forever – no. No. that absolutely wouldn't happen.
Fighting the urge to run back her phone suddenly pinged.
Tony's helping now. Time travel is a go.
"SHIT!" Beatrice gasped out loud, almost dropping her phone, "Fuck… shit…" it was truly happening. With shaky hands she began to text back but another message from Natasha came through before she could hit send.
'Go and get Fifteen. We know you know where she went '
Quickly deleting what she's just typed, her hands hovered over her phone, not sure what to say. Fifteen hadn't been seen since the Hydra explosion. Fifteen wanted nothing more to do with the Avengers and fled. Only Beatrice knew where she'd gone.
'Guess I better make a trip to Wakanda then' Bea answered swiftly.
Good. She'll want to join in on the fun.
Her first mission with the Avengers had begun and she was going to bring Bucky home.
The sudden sting of fear left her as she got in the car and told her driver to take her back to the quinjet.
*~It started with Pizza~*
Four hours later and the boarders of Wakanda became… well, not visible, but the trees became similar and a sense of dread entered Bea's body. Like her heart had been swallowed by her stomach. She hadn't been back here since she lost Bucky.
The plane landed smoothly, and Bea stepped off the quinjet. The heat hitting her fully in the face.
"This is a surprise," Okoye greeted, in unusual casual attire. Bea was used to seeing her in her full armour, "Welcome back."
The words 'I miss this place' were caught in her throat. It was still the same streets and markets – it all just seemed smaller, even with less crowd. She'd never been happier than when she was living here.
"It's great to see you, Okoye," Bea greeted, "I'm here for Fifteen. You seen her anywhere?"
"Where she always is… training."
She wouldn't exactly call it training, Bea thought, when she found Fifteen half an hour later going wild in the gym, as simulated figures came rushing at her. When Fifteen stabbed the figures or punched them, they would glitch out and then fall away. It was surly one of Shuri's wonderful inventions.
For a moment she watched her from the doorway. Her mind going back to when to her own training with her down in dingy Hydra cells. I only she'd known then what storm was coming from them. She'd have trained harder.
Emails had been written back and forth between the two friends over the past year and Fifteen's location had only been entrusted to Beatrice.
Fifteen hadn't noticed standing in the doorway, and as she defeated the last computer generated enemy, Bea ran at her and tried to swipe her feet out from under her. Normally, she'd never be able to take out her previous trainer, but Fifteen was caught unawares and only just managed to catch herself before she hit the floor.
Fifteen smirked when she noticed who it was, "Long time no see, eh?"
"I know right… thought I'd sweep you off your feet."
The two women continued to dance around the room. Bea was quicker in her defence now as Fifteen ruthlessly sent swings at her until Bea was pushed up against a wall and managed to duck under her, catching her and swing her over herself.
With a great bang, Fifteen's back crashed to the floor, "You've improved…" she puffed.
"Well, there's not much to do when I'm under state arrest and the Avengers base open as a free gym to me."
"pfft, your skill came from who trained you and that just happens to be me."
"Sure, take all the credit."
Helping her up, the two women collapsed into a hug, "What are you here for? I'm guessing it's not just to knock my arse to the floor."
"Time-travel," Came Bea's one worded response, simply because she wanted to see the look of disbelief on Fifteen's face and when her mouth opened into the perfect 'O' shape, her wish had been fulfilled.
Finally, she explained the whole story and when she was done Fifteen looked even more doubtful.
"You know what you sound like… absolutely crazy – and I've spent some time with Shuri and that girl can come up with some barmy inventions…" Fifteen said, swallowing a gulp of water as the two of them rested on gym benches.
"It wasn't my idea," She defended, "but Tony Stark and Bruce Banner is working on it. I say we have a shot."
Fifteen narrowed her eyes, "you've gotten hopeful."
"I haven't… I know the chance of this working is slim."
"Yes, you have," She continued, "I've not seen you look this hopeful in five years."
"I know you're no longer working for the Avengers, but… Will you join us?"
Fifteen stared doubtfully and her shoulders sagged in defeat, "I honestly don't think I can help, Beatrice," She sighed.
"Why the hell not?"
"I said I was done with Avengers missions after what happened," She pressed her voice raising an octave as she tried to convince Bea this was for the best. But, Bea hadn't just flown four hours to Wakanda to be rejected so she stood her ground, crossing her arms tightly.
"Tony and Steve are working together again. If this is about before, no one cares anymore. It's all in the past."
"Steve won't accept that I tried to help a Hydra agent."
"He forgave me," She shrugged nonchalantly, not understanding what her problem was.
"That's because you're you. He'll always forgive you," Fifteen rolled her eyes, "I can't go and work for them again – Steve, Natasha… they expect me to be okay with being given missions that involves killing my previous co-workers. Hydra expected me to kill people I didn't want to too and I'm not doing it again. It doesn't matter whose good and whose bad. I won't do it."
Beatrice wanted to shake her shoulders and scream at her. This was completely different! This was an opportunity to fix everything so there was no more tension.
"That doesn't matter!" Beatrice exploded, "The Hydra agent… it doesn't matter anymore. We can bring everyone home. Nothing in the last five years will have mattered."
"That's easy for you to say."
"The Hydra agents bloody tried to kill you, Fifteen!" Her hands danced wildly around in the air. She wasn't sure what she was doing anymore only that she wanted to clip Fifteen by the ear and drag her back to New York with her. She didn't expect t be met with this resistance.
"Don't remind me," Fifteen uttered darkly, "but sometimes you've got to take risks for people you see as friends. Even if they turn around and stab you in the back."
She wanted to remind her that the Hydra agent was definitely not her friend, but she didn't see that going down very well.
"Yes… you do," said Bea, "Am I your friend?"
Rolling her eyes, Fifteen forced out, "Yes. Of course you are."
"Then come with me. Please."
It would be against what she'd just preached about friendship, if Fifteen turned around and said no to her plea now then she'd be a hypocrite. She scanned her for the longest time, hesitating on giving an answer.
"Do you really think it'll work?" Fifteen asked finally.
"I don't know," Bea replied honestly, "I have hope."
That was all she needed.
A/N
SO I MADE A MISTAKE. Apparently, I forgot to upload a chapter between chapter 66-67. Absolutely have no idea how I managed that. It's no biggie, it was sort of a filler chapter anyway and went more deeper into Alex being an arsehole and Steve being mad at Bea but there's no real NEED to go back and read it but if you like I've uploaded it now. Still have no idea how I managed that.
To make it up for my late update this week, I'm uploading two chapters. I know all of you really can't wait to see Bucky again. Let's just say it'll be sooner than you think
Thank you so much to everyone's lovely reviews!
NeoMulder: Hearing that this is your favourite was really lovely so thank you so much. I just hope I can keep up with the updates, I'm only half way through writing the time heist and I'm catching up with weekly updates very quickly. Thank you again!
LunaEvanna Longbottom: Haha. You're review made me laugh. I promise it was only a small threatening tone… :D
