Summer and her cousin, Sorin, began their Top 8 battle against each other. Although she had the upper hand knocking out two of his Pokémon, he regained control with his Sharpedo, Indra, defeating Flower and Lightning. As the battle continues, the air becomes more tense on who the winner will be. Who will advance to the Top 4?
Chapter 59- A Friendly Fire Fight
As the crowd cheered, I threw my Lure Ball into the air. "Go, Aurora!"
The Dewgong gracefully posed on the center platform at our side of the field. Indra scoffed at the performance, but Aurora didn't care.
The referee made sure we were ready, then shouted, "Battle begin!"
Sorin smiled, eager to score another small win, "Indra, Crunch!"
The Sharpedo lunged out of the pool, her jaws open wide.
I countered, "Aurora, dive underwater!"
Using her fins for extra power, the Ice type slid into the water, narrowly avoiding Indra's teeth.
Sorin smiled. "So it's an underwater battle you want, Summer?"
I grinned. "What else, Sorin!"
My cousin laughed. "I expected as much from you. Indra, dive and use Waterfall!"
The Dark type quickly descended and charged at Aurora.
"Aurora, block with Aqua Tail!"
A cyclone formed from the southeast corner of the pool, which then exploded into the air. Indra was knocked onto the platform to Sorin's left as Aurora's head emerged from the pool. Indra shook off the pain before returning to the water.
My cousin gritted his teeth. "Ice Beam!"
"Use Ice Beam right back!"
The blue beams collided, creating a humongous mountain of ice that obscured our vision of our opponents.
I could make out Sorin's muffled voice shouting, "Break that ice with Crunch!"
I glanced at Aurora, who smiled knowingly. I nodded and shouted, "Break through the ice and use Water Pulse!"
She broke through the thick frozen wall with horn so efficiently, shocking the Brutal Pokémon. Aurora then shot the watery orb at Indra's mouth, knocking her back onto the same platform. The Dark type glared at her opponent once more, ignoring the crowd's cheers, before diving back into the water.
Sorin clenched his right fist. "Looks like we have no choice. Indra, ready yourself for a Hyper Beam!"
She chuckled and opened her mouth wide to form a large orange-yellow orb.
Aurora can't handle a move like that! I need to do something! "Aurora, dive and use Aqua Ring!"
She plunged into the depths and saw a small glow of green through the rippling water. Indra leapt out of the pool and blasted the shimmering water with a large orange-yellow energy beam. The water immediately evaporated from one of the most powerful moves, exposing the bottom of the twenty-foot pool. When the attack subsided, Indra collapsed on the platform, her breathing growing heavier. I knelt down and cautiously peered into the pool, making sure to grip the edge securely. Aurora, who escaped most of the beam's path, was also breathing heavily, and the Aqua Ring was able to heal some of the damage.
Sorin and I looked at each other and smiled.
I got up and shouted, "Aurora, use Aqua Tail!"
The Ice type lifted her tail and whacked it on the concrete, using the swirling water to propel her back to the ground surface. But before she could swing it at Indra, the Sharpedo readied herself for her last stand.
"Indra, Waterfall!"
The Dark type lunged at Aurora in a torrent of water and uppercutted her. Not wanting to be outdone, the Dewgong somersaulted backwards, knocking her tail into Indra's lower jaw. Both Pokémon slammed onto the same platform in the center, unable to move.
The referee waved both flags in the air. "Both Indra and Aurora are unable to battle! The battle is a draw!"
The crowd cheered, and we returned our Water types.
"Thanks, Aurora," I whispered. "You did really well."
The referee then announced, "Now that both Trainers have three Pokémon remaining, the final field type will be chosen at random."
Everyone looked at the television screen, which now had a circle with ten wedges, with two colors associated with one of the five battlefield types. The spinning light returned, circling between the light brown, blue, green, dark brown, and white wedges. When it stopped, a light brown wedge stayed illuminated.
"The final battlefield type will be ground!"
The floor shifted for the last time, revealing a level field with dirt.
"Trainers, please select your next Pokémon!"
I wonder who Sorin's going to choose next…
Sorin tossed a Great Ball into the air. "Go, Steinar!"
A large dark gray bipedal Pokémon emerged from his ball. There were silver armor plates on his back and silver bands on his arms and legs. His head was also armored in silver, but had two horns and a pointy headplate protruding from it.
[Aggron, the Iron Armor Pokémon and the evolved form of Lairon. Its iron horns grow longer a little at a time. They are used to determine the Aggron's age. The gouges in its armor are worn with pride as mementos from battles.]
I gritted my teeth. One of the most used Pokémon from Hoenn. This'll be tough. Looks like he'll be the best option right now. "Go, Rocky!"
The Steelix towered over his opponent, but Steinar was unfazed. Sorin had a similar expression but his hands clenched with concern. The Steel types glared at each other, eager to test each other's strength.
"Battle begin!"
Sorin shook off the worry and roared, "Steinar, Double Edge!"
The Aggron matched his Trainer's determination and charged at Rocky in a burst of orange energy.
"Rocky, block Steinar with Stone Edge!"
The Ground type slammed his tail on the ground and sharp pillars of stone protruded randomly on the field. Steinar was undeterred and charged through all of them before hitting Rocky's midsection. The Steelix easily shook off the pain, but to my surprise, the Aggron didn't take any damage from hitting the rocks and Rocky.
I clenched my right fist. Steinar must have Rock Head! This is definitely going to be tougher.
Sorin, his confidence growing, continued his assault. "Steinar, Rock Slide!"
The Iron Armor Pokémon roared, and large boulders materialized over us.
As they hurled towards my Pokémon, I shouted, "Destroy the boulders with Stone Edge!"
Small shards of stone surrounded the Steelix's body then flew towards the falling stones. The smaller rocks shattered the larger ones into small pieces, making Steinar growl in anger and Sorin's eyes grow wide.
I smiled. Yes! Our training with Jasmine really paid off! "Iron Tail!"
Sorin countered, "Iron Tail right back!"
Two silver tails crashed into each other, then again and again, turning the battle into a heavy swordfight. They refused to waver in tenacity and power, causing the crowd to cheer for their favorite to win.
"You can do it, Rocky!" I cheered.
Sorin smirked. "Don't give in, Steinar!"
The Steel types, invigorated by our encouragement, continued their swinging conflict. However, after a few more clashes, Rocky was tiring faster than Steinar.
My cousin, sensing the change in strength, shouted, "Steinar, throw Rocky to the ground!"
As Rocky swung his tail at his opponent, the latter grabbed it and prepared to lift the Steelix in the air.
I gasped. Is Steinar really that strong?! I have to stop him! "I don't think so! Rocky, Dragonbreath!"
The Iron Snake Pokémon exhaled the green flames, causing the Aggron to wince in pain and let go. Rocky slithered back to our side, his eyes narrowing at the powerful opponent.
"That was close. You okay, Rocky?"
He nodded. "Yeah…"
Sorin smiled. "Nice escape, but it won't help you. Steinar, Double Edge!"
The Iron Armor Pokémon charged at Rocky in a burst of orange light, though his movement was a little slower.
I shouted, "Dragonbreath!"
Rocky shot more green flames at Steinar, but his opponent barreled through the Dragon type move, putting him within striking range.
Sorin grasped his right hand and commanded, "Brick Break!"
"Brick Break?!"
Steinar's right hand glowed orange and struck Rocky in his midsection. The Steelix roared in pain and crumpled onto the dirt, unable to move.
"Rocky is unable to battle! Steinar wins!"
I inhaled deeply as I returned Rocky amidst the cheers. "Thanks, Rocky. You did really well." I then noticed Steinar was sweating profusely. Looks like there's still a chance to defeat that warrior after all.
"Summer," the referee said. "Please choose your next Pokémon!"
I took out a Pokéball and grinned at my opponent. "Looks like I have to use him earlier than I thought. Go, Blaze!"
My starter emerged from his ball, drawing stronger cheers from the audience. Sorin was wary, but his confidence was still present.
"Battle begin!"
Sorin shouted, "Steinar, Rock Slide!"
The Steel type looked to the sky and roared. More large boulders materialized over us and plummeted towards the Fire type.
Blaze and I smirked. "All right, Blaze. Jump on the rocks and kick them back with Blaze Kick!"
The Blaziken leapt onto the nearest falling boulder and quickly scanned his surroundings. Then, he jumped towards a smaller rock with flames surrounding his right leg. Blaze slammed his leg into the rock, causing a miniature comet to hurtle towards his opponent. Steinar blocked the first rock, but this only fueled Blaze's intensity. The flaming rocks kept coming, and the Aggron's arms began to falter.
Sorin gritted his teeth as Blaze landed on a rock-free field. "Don't give in just yet, Steinar! Double Edge!"
His Steel type roared again and charged at his opponent in a burst of orange light. But he was moving much slower than the last move.
Blaze and I glanced at each other and nodded. We braced ourselves and clenched our right fists.
Once Steinar got within striking range, we swung our fists upwards. "Sky Uppercut!"
Blaze hit the heavier Pokémon in the lower jaw. The Aggron's head snapped back, feeling the full effects of the super effective move. The Blaziken then shifted away from the falling Steinar, who couldn't return to his feet.
"Steinar is unable to battle! Blaze wins!"
Sorin chuckled as he returned his fallen Pokémon. "Thanks, Steinar. You battled hard." Turning to us, he said, "I knew Blaze would be strong, but I never expected you to take out Steinar so easily."
We crossed our arms. "Thanks for the compliment, but we know the true test is still waiting."
My cousin smirked. "Then why don't we speed that up?" He picked up a Pokéball and was about to throw it when someone else decided to make an appearance.
Aella, his Noctowl, flew into the air, glaring at Sorin. "Don't ya dare, Sorin!" she shrieked. "No more waiting! I gotta defeat Errol!"
Blaze and I sweat dropped.
The referee looked at Sorin. "Is this your next Pokémon, Sorin?"
He sighed and put Ellanher's Pokéball back onto his belt. "Yeah, she is." He then looked at me. "I'm guessing you know what she wants, huh?"
"Yeah, we've been expecting this too. Ready to take a break, Blaze?" After he nodded, I returned him and shouted, "Go, Errol!"
My Noctowl ascended to his sister's height.
Aella smirked. "Today's the day, brother! I'll destroy and humiliate ya here, the perfect revenge."
I held my breath. Will Errol really battle wholeheartedly?
But my fears were eased when Errol replied, "Aella. I cannot reverse my actions when we were HootletsI shall fulfill your request, however I will defeat you once more!"
This riled her. "You'll regret those words, Errol."
"Battle begin!"
Fueled by his Pokémon's desire to win, Sorin shouted, "Aella, Steel Wing!"
She soared with her wings outspread. Once they glowed silver, she charged at her brother.
I countered, "Errol, dodge with Confusion!"
His eyes glowed blue, and the same energy surrounded Aella. She struggled to break free from his mental grip, but Errol was able to prevail as he dodged her wings effortlessly.
The female Noctowl growled. "You ain't gonna outsmart me, brother!"
She shook off the blue aura and charged at him again, despite Sorin not telling her to do so.
"Psychic!" I shouted.
A magenta blob to her chest knocked her off course, and her wings returned to normal. Errol watched his sister recover, but his determination didn't waver.
"Psychic!" both me and Sorin cried.
The two blobs collided in midair and exploded into magenta waves, striking both Flying types.
My cousin then commanded, "Aella, Take Down!"
She surrounded herself in a bright white light and charged at Errol.
"Errol, Air Slash!"
He raised his right wing to charge the translucent orb, but Aella quickened her assault and smashed into his chest. She smirked as she flew past him but winced due to the recoil damage. Errol clenched his beak and fell towards the ground, but not before throwing his attack at her. The orb hit her back, and she plummeted as well. Both Flying types slammed into the dirt, but they were able to return to their feet.
"You okay, Errol?" I asked.
"Of course, Ms. Summer. I can continue."
My Noctowl returned to the air just as Sorin's ascended. Both Noctowl were panting, but Errol definitely took more damage.
Sorin clenched his fist. "Aella, Sky Attack!"
She closed her eyes and surrounded herself in a turquoise light.
Sky Attack may need time to charge, but it'll be devastating if that move hits! "Errol! Combine your Air Slash with Psychic!"
He nodded and raised his right wing. As the orb formed, his eyes glowed magenta, and he guided the blob into the swirling air. The Air Slash was now a beautiful swirl of light purple just as Aella's eyes opened.
"Go!" Sorin shouted.
"Now!" I countered.
Aella charged at her brother, with blue streaks of light shooting past her. Errol threw the combined move at her, but she dodged and continued her assault.
"Sorry, Summer," Sorin said with a smirk. "Looks like Aella finally beat Errol."
I smirked back at him, making his smile falter. "I don't think so. Errol, use Confusion!"
His eyes glowed blue, but this time, he regained control of his Psychic-powered Air Slash. Just as she inched closer to Errol's chest, he hurled the orb into Aella's chest. The latter shrieked as she was thrown upwards, then she fell onto the battlefield with a thud. Errol landed on the dirt, just as Aella was struggling to stand.
"Th-This can't...end like this…" she muttered.
Errol glared at the injured Pokémon. "I still care about you, sister. But I will continue my onslaught if you truly decide to continue."
Sorin saw Aella's hesitation and became concerned. "Aella, can you keep going?"
She nodded and rose to her feet. Her Trainer saw her body was swaying back and forth and shook his head.
"Sorry, Aella. I can't watch you suffer anymore." Sorin turned to the referee. "I'm withdrawing Aella from the match."
She was shocked but wasn't able to utter a protest. The female Noctowl collapsed again, her breathing shallow.
The referee waved his yellow flag. "Sorin has decided to withdraw Aella from this match. Therefore, Errol wins by default! Sorin, please choose your final Pokémon!"
The crowd gave a supportive cheer as my cousin returned his Flying type.
"Thanks, Aella. Your efforts won't be in vain." Sorin took out his final Pokéball. "Looks like it's finally time. Go, Ellanher!"
The Typhlosion exploded onto the field and landed on all fours. Errol, though tired, returned to the skies.
"Battle begin!"
All we need is just one hit to give Blaze an advantage.
Sorin saw my determined expression and smirked. "I know what you're thinking, Summer. And I won't let that happen! Ellanher, Lava Plume!"
The Fire type clenched the dirt under his paws and roared, flames extruding from the back of his neck. The ground slightly quaked, and large pillars of fires sprouted from the battlefield.
"Errol, dodge and use Psychic!"
The Flying type maneuvered around the flames, but the intense heat was hindering his speed.
As the Owl Pokémon drew closer, Sorin shouted, "Rollout!"
Ellanher leapt into the air and curled into a tight ball. He spun around and slammed into Errol's weakened chest, knocking the Flying type into several plumes before colliding into the wall behind me.
"Errol!" I shouted as he fell onto the dirt, unable to move.
"Errol is unable to battle! Ellanher wins!"
The fiery pillars subsided as the crowd cheered. Sorin and his partner grinned at each other while I returned Errol.
"You did really well, Errol. I'm proud of you."
"Summer," the referee said. "Please use your final Pokémon!"
I nodded and clenched Blaze's Pokéball. "Go, BLaze!"
The Blaziken reemerged onto the battlefield. The crowd was in suspense over which Fire starter would prevail over the other. Sorin and I looked at each other and smiled, knowing this will determine who the winner will be.
"Battle begin!" the referee shouted for the final time.
Sorin pointed at Blaze. "Ellanher, Rollout!"
The Volcano Pokémon curled back into a ball and charged at the Blaziken.
I shouted, "Blaze, Blaze Kick!"
We waited as the rolling black ball got closer, then we made a front high kick. The fiery leg launched Ellanher into the air, and the Johto starter spread himself out to reduce the impact.
"Quick, Blaze! Another Blaze Kick!"
The Fighting type jumped into the air and scissor kicked his opponent's back. The Typhlosion slammed onto the field, but was able to quickly stand up. He growled as the Blaziken returned to the ground.
Sorin smiled. "I feel you, Ellanher. Time to change strategy. Lava Plume!"
The Johto starter stomped on the ground and released another wave of flame pillars. This time, I wasn't too worried.
"Blaze, leap over the Lava Plume and use Blaze Kick!"
He nodded and ascended onto the nearest fiery plume and hopped towards Ellanher.
Sorin smirked. "Brick Break!"
The Typhlosion's right hand glowed orange as he jumped towards his opponent. Although the Blaze Pokémon's flaming leg made contact with Ellanher's chest, the latter shifted his body slightly and lowered his fist onto Blaze's chest. Both Pokémon fell onto the dirt at the center of the field. When the pillars disappeared, both starters returned to their feet. I sensed a strong urge from Blaze; and looking at Sorin's determined face, I could tell he was thinking the same thing.
"Fire Punch!" we shouted.
Their fists glowed reddish orange and they began to trade blows. Knowing I couldn't match Blaze's pace, I trusted his movements. It was a fiercely close bout, with both Pokémon landing and missing powerful punches at the head and body. Everyone waited with baited breath on who will gain control.
"Don't give in, Blaze!" I cheered.
Sorin responded with, "You can do it, Ellanher!"
With a burst of energy from the encouragement, the Fire types exchanged right hands at each other's faces. Blaze's experience, however, forced the Typhlosions' knees to buckle.
"Now, Blaze, Sky Uppercut!"
"Oh no you don't! Brick Break!"
The Hoenn starter swung his right fist upwards just as the Volcano Pokémon slammed his right hand into Blaze's left side. The Fire types collapsed once more on the dirt, panting heavily.
Sorin grew concerned. "Ellanher! Can you keep going?"
His Pokémon gritted his teeth and nodded, rising back onto his feet.
"Blaze!" I shouted. "How about you?"
He grimaced but said with a smile, "Of course, Summer." He got back up and inhaled deeply.
The starters looked at each other respectfully, acknowledging each other's power. The flames around Blaze's fists grew stronger, and both Pokémon's bodies started to glow orange.
I chuckled. "Both Pokémon's abilities are activating, huh?"
"They sure are." Sorin looked at me expectantly. "Let's show them a real fire fight."
With a grin, I nodded.
"Fire Punch!" we commanded in unison.
Our partners resumed their fist fight; the contact of the blows echoing throughout the stadium. I breathed in sync with Blaze, but I could tell his breath was getting shorter with every punch.
Come on, Blaze!
But as Blaze missed a right hook, Ellanher landed a sharp left hook to Blaze's body. The Fighting type's guard weakened as the Typhlosion smirked.
Sorin shouted, "Ellanher, Brick Break!"
"Blaze, retreat with Flamethrower!"
With the enhanced power from the Blaze Ability, my Pokémon avoided another swinging blow and pushed himself back to our side of the field. Ellanher slid back and landed on all fours. The two were getting more exhausted, but still wanted to continue battling. As for me and Sorin, the heat from the powered up Fire Punches and Flamethrower made us pant.
Sorin wiped his brow. "I really don't want this battle to end… But...I guess it has to."
I brushed my damp hair back. "I know how you feel, Sorin. And our Pokémon definitely feel the same."
Blaze and Ellanher nodded with wide grins.
Sorin roared, "Then let's finish this battle once and for all!"
With a burst of adrenaline, I boldly replied, "Let's!"
We locked eyes one last time and waved our arms forward. "Fire Punch!"
Our Pokémon lunged at each other with right fists glowing. When they met at the center, they swung them at each other's faces. The stadium was silent as the Fire types maintained their positions. I held my breath and clenched my right fist.
After a few more seconds, both Pokémon fell forward. However, Ellanher landed on his front paws while Blaze crumpled onto the battlefield, motionless.
The referee waved his flags for the last time. "Blaze is unable to battle! Ellanher wins, which means Sorin Baldwin has advanced to the Top 4!"
The Typhlosion happily bounded towards his Trainer, and the two hugged each other. Ignoring the cheers from the stands, I ran over to my fallen Pokémon and knelt down. "Blaze! Are you all right?!"
He pushed himself off the ground and turned to me. "I'm…fine...Summer."
I breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness."
He chuckled. "At least I was able to battle properly in this stadium, huh?"
I held a laugh. "Yeah...I guess you did." We embraced, trying to hold back tears.
"Summer?"
I let go of Blaze and saw my cousin offering me his hand. I wiped my eyes and accepted it, just as Ellanher helped my Pokémon onto his feet.
"Congratulations, Sorin. You battled really well."
He wiped his brow again and replied, "You too, Summer. I'm really glad you told me you wanted this kind of battle."
"Pretty intense, huh?"
He laughed. "Just like our family spirit."
We smiled, knowing our paths in the tournament have finally diverged. "Good luck with the rest of the tournament. I know you can win the whole thing, Sorin."
He nodded. "I won't be battling just for me, but for you, our families, and Grandma Lan."
We returned our Pokémon and exchanged a tender embrace; the crowd was touched by our familial gesture. As we returned to the backstage area, the sting of the loss was replaced with relief. Finally, my dispute with Sorin gained closure.
A few hours later…
My friends and I sat at the largest booth in Seaking's Burgers, waiting for our orders.
Yuki sighed. "Is it really okay that we're celebrating tonight?"
Lisa added, "It doesn't feel right, since Summer and you lost, Lows."
Her companion shook his head. "That shouldn't dissuade us from Sip's victory. He made it to the Top 4 after all!"
"I agree!" I said. "That's why I got the triple chocolate milkshake!"
Samir smiled. "I'm just glad you finished your Top 8 match properly, Summer."
"Me too," Carlos added. "You should muy orgullosa, Señorita Summer."
Candy softly smiled and crossed her arms. "I hate to admit it...but… You're still not half-bad, Summer."
"Thanks...I think?"
Jasmine beamed. "We should just spend the rest of our time here to the fullest. After all, we just have one week left."
Morty nodded, and he nervously inched his right hand towards Jasmine's left hand placed on the table. Our eyes grew wide as she accepted it with a comforting squeeze. The Ecruteak City Gym Leader smiled at me, and I chuckled.
Then, I noticed someone entering the diner. "Sorin!"
My cousin was surprised but approached our booth. "Hey, guess you guys are here too."
"Want to join us?"
He hesitated. "I...don't want to intrude."
"We still have room." Lows waved him inside.
Sorin obliged, and we scooched over to the right. He sat next to me, and we waited to talk to him after he placed his order.
"How are our Pokémon doing?" I asked.
He smiled. "Everyone's fine. Nurse Iris said they'll all make a full recovery."
"That's good."
Yuki twirled her hair. "Won't Errol and Aella get into another argument?"
Sorin and I looked at each other, then I answered, "Our Pokémon are making sure they reconcile. And we're going to check on them after dinner."
Jasmine nodded. "Congratulations on making it so far, Sorin. Morty and I are impressed with how much you've grown since your battles against us."
"Thanks, Jasmine and Morty." He then noticed Sip. "You're Sip, right? Congrats on making it through."
The Lavaridge Town native grinned. "Thanks, you too. Think we'll battle each other next?"
"Maybe. You and Taylor Rose are my biggest threats."
Lows crossed his arms. "Well, I can say from experience that both of them are really strong. But...you can't count out Maurice."
"True," I said. "He hasn't been getting a lot of attention, but his Typhlosion could rival Ellanher."
Sorin smirked. "I've heard. I'm almost itching for him to be my opponent now."
We all laughed when our meals arrived. We feasted on the specialty drinks, burgers, and curly fries and continued our analyses for the next hour.
