Superficlets - Chapter 61 - Carter

Grief and suffering. Trigger warning for both along with a character death.

"Get out! I don't want you here!"

Kara blinked at the venom behind the CEO's simple words. She lifted her hands and sighed sadly, then turned and moved to the couch to sit down, gathering her cape up and laying it across her lap. She knew that Cat didn't really want her to leave.

Cat walked slowly toward her, scotch sloshing over the edge of her glass as she yelled. "Why didn't you do something?! Why didn't you save him?" she accused, voice hoarse with anguish. She'd gone through almost a whole bottle and she was very drunk. It was happening more and more regularly, and the hero was worried.

For a while, Kara couldn't say anything as tears flooded her eyes and trickled down her face. Then she slowly got up and closed the distance between them. She took the glass out of the CEO's hand and wrapped her up in a tight embrace. "I wish I could have saved him," she replied quietly. "I wish it every single minute of every day, Cat." She shook her head slowly. "But, no matter how powerful I am, I'm neither Rao nor God. I don't have the power to fix everything."

Cat pushed weakly at her, but Kara held on until the smaller blonde gave in and just allowed herself to be held. She hated being vulnerable, hated having to rely on anyone but somehow, through the grief and pain, Kara holding her made things a little more bearable.

From where they were standing in Cat's apartment, she could see the open doorway of her son's bedroom and the now-silent equipment, surrounding his bed, that had kept him as pain-free as possible during the final weeks of his life. The cancer had been aggressive and had rapidly spread through his brain, leaving no chance of saving her beautiful, curly-haired son.

"I miss him so much," Cat whispered, desperately soaking up the comfort Kara was offering. "Why did this have to happen?"

"I don't know," Kara replied softly. "I don't have any answers. All I know is that I love and miss him too." She nuzzled Cat's cheek. "And I love you."

Cat sighed and sank further into her wife's embrace. "I know I'm fucked up, Kara, but I love you too. Please don't leave me."

Blue eyes full of determination shone back. "Never."
