Chapter 168

"How was your day?" Yon asked Jae Sun once they'd sat down together for dinner.

"It was great," Jae Sun answered. "Mr. Mo really liked this week's installment of Poki's adventures."

"What trouble did Poki get into this week?"

"I wrote and drew about the time Poki attempted to break into mom's chicken coop," Jae Sun said.

"Sounds precious," Yon smiled. "So do any young ladies work in that office?" Jae Sun tensed a little, knowing exactly where this conversation was going.

"I know there are a few. Why?"

"Does the publishing house host any sort of parties for its single employees? I'm sure women that work for a publishing company would have no issue with artists or dating an artist."

"Grandma," Jae Sun started, "you're talking about women that live in the city and probably want to stay in the city. Even if I made a living wage off my comics, I highly doubt any of the women in that office would want to start a serious relationship with a guy that lives an hour away in the middle of nowhere."

"This isn't the middle of nowhere! It's a small farming village. A very big difference," Yon defended.

"I know, grandma, but no matter how you word it, it doesn't sound appealing to most. Especially women who are used to the city."

"I can promise you those girls have families that will happily give them some perspective of what makes a man worthwhile," Yon sighed. "Honestly, children these days don't know how good they have it. They never had to experience the terror of war."

"Sure we do," Jae Sun defended. "We're still at war."

"If you think the North and the South staring at each other is anything compared to what I went through or your grandpa and mother went through, then you are sorely mistaken young man," Yon said then sighed a little. "I'm just trying to encourage you to go out and meet someone. I appreciate all the help you've given me since moving here but I still want you to live your own life. I'm thrilled that you were able to find a publisher for your artwork and I want you to be able to live your life. I want you to feel free to stay in the city for a few hours, meet people, make friends, find a nice girl. It's not healthy to only work, eat with your grandma and go home to your cat."

"Alright," Jae Sun said reluctantly. "Next I go into the city, I'll stay there for a few hours and do something."

"Good," Yon said, "It'll do you good to enjoy yourself."

"Yes, grandma," Jae Sun answered.

It wasn't until next week, but when he went into Seoul again to drop off his latest comic, he didn't immediately drive back home. Instead, he asked Mr. Park if there was anywhere in town he'd recommend for a good time. When Mr. Park asked Jae Sun to advise what type of 'fun' it was he was looking for, he figured Mr. Park might not be the best person to talk to and told him not to worry about it. However, Mr. Park did mention that his brother's company was hosting a singles meet up this coming Friday after their work hours. Although reluctant to do so, Jae Sun agreed he would attend figuring it would be something he could tell Yon he was doing. Worst case scenario, he'd get free drinks and free food and go home. Yon was delighted when he told her and come Friday after he finished his work for the day, Jae Sun showered, dressed nice and drove into the city to the office building Mr. Park had told him about.

When he arrived, he felt like the whole world was staring at him and he didn't like it. He put on the little nametag he filled out and went straight to the bar. As he figured would happen, no one really approached him. He overheard girls asking if he was even Korean, he heard some girls refer to him as 'weird tall' or 'scary tall', and the worst was a girl commenting that if she wanted to climb a tree she'd go to the park. He was used to comments about his height, but he wasn't used to anything quite so antagonistic. He ended up in the corner keeping to himself for the better part of an hour before someone walked up to him. He could tell right away she was a kindred spirit of sorts. She was extremely tan and it was clear to him she was half Korean just like him.

"How's the corner party?" she asked.

"Dull if I'm honest," Jae Sun said, "but I'll take dull over anyone here feigning interest in me then bad mouthing me later about my height."

"Yeah, you're definitely a tall drink of water," she said. "I take it your dad was a veteran?"

"Yeah," Jae Sun smiled, "You too I assume?"

"Yup," she said and extended a hand, "My name's Leanne Jackson."

"Jae Sun Dauer," he answered. "So have you always lived in Korea or did you move back recently?"

"I've always lived here," Leanne said. "My parents had a thing going during the war but as I understand it they broke up and by the time she found out about me, daddy had already returned home. I don't think she was ever able to get in contact with him so it's been my mom, my aunts and my grandparents. How about you?"

"I moved here recently," Jae Sun said. "My mom's family stayed here, but we moved to the states before I was born. My dad's side of the family lives in Washington State, but after grandpa died, I moved here to help my grandma with the farm."

"A farm? I take it you don't live in Seoul then?"

"Nope," Jae Sun said.

"How'd you find out about this mixer?"

"I submit comics for to the Newspaper so I'm here just about every Thursday. I found out from a coworker with the publishing company and my grandma insisted I get out more. So here I am. A resounding success thus far."

"I'd say so," she giggled. "So what comic do you draw for?"

"I draw and write the story for The Adventures of Popo the Cat."

"Wait, really? Oh, my God, that's you?! My little cousin absolutely loves your comics!"

"I'm happy to hear she likes them," Jae Sun smiled.

"Loves them," Leanne said. "She's been begging my aunt for a cat since she started reading them. It's a no-go so far, but she keeps trying. She has it in her head that she wants a cat just like Popo."

"Careful what you wish for," Jae Sun chuckled. "I loved Popo dearly, but he could be troublesome."

"So Popo was a real cat?"

"Oh yeah," Jae Sun said. "So the real story behind that is my mom was out on the porch of our little house we have in the country here in Korea. She heard a cat crying and found a weasel attacking him, so she got a broom and made the weasel let Popo go. She brought him to a local animal doctor who took care of him and Popo started coming back when he felt better, mom started feeding him and before we know it we've got a cat. He actually died my senior year of high school. No joke: the following spring after Popo died, a feral cat made a little nest under the porch of our house and had kittens. My Aunt Nesia adopted the feral cat as well as one of the kittens. My sisters were able to convince my dad to let them keep a kitten they named TT and I kept a little black and white kitten that I named Poki. Poki's basically my child, but he's a trouble maker."

"So you've had cats all your life?"

"Yeah, much to my dad's chagrin. He hates cats but he loved Popo. He'd never admit it, but he did. Do you like cats?"

"Not really if I'm honest," Leanne said. Jae Sun's expression must have changed enough that she laughed a little. "I take it that's a deal breaker?"

"I'm afraid so," Jae Sun said. "Thanks for talking to me at least. I was beginning to feel like I had the plague."

"Hey, don't worry; I haven't had much luck either," Leanne said. "My cousin will be very jealous to find out I got to meet the creator of Popo."

"I can make a comic just for her if she wants."

"Could you really? Oh, she'd love that," Leanne said. "I'll go get some paper and a pencil for you."

Leanne ran off for a bit and returned with some paper and a pencil. Using a free table, Jae Sun drew a strip of Popo in his dad's General Store wreaking havoc completely unintentionally until he was forced to go outside but ended the comic, as he always did, with his mother giving Popo a hug. This time, she gave him a hug in hers and his dad's bed and Jae Sun couldn't resist depicting his dad with his arms crossed irritably while his mom was hugging Popo. Once he finished, he signed it and handed it over to Leanne.

"That is so precious," Leanne said. "Thank you so much for this."

"It's my pleasure," Jae Sun smiled. "And tell her if her mom keeps saying no about getting her a cat, I'll happily let her play with Poki every now and then."

"While I'm sure she'd be thrilled with the idea, I don't know how her mom would feel about that. I'll ask her about it though. You said you live on a farm?"

"Yeah," Jae Sun said, "we raise chickens and ducks, we've got rice fields, lots of vegetables, you name it."

"I might suggest we bring her to your farm just to put her to work," Leanne joked. "I should probably get your number if we're going to be arranging play dates with my cousin and the cat."

"Sure," Jae Sun said and wrote down his number on a napkin. She wrote her number down as well.

He ended up speaking with Leanne for the rest of the night. He didn't really feel a spark between them but he was happy to have a friend at least. Over the weekend, he got a voicemail from Leanne telling him that her cousin, Lin was her name, was thrilled with the comic she'd received and was begging to be able to meet Poki. She'd begged enough that her mother finally said yes so Leanne was calling to find out what they could arrange. Jae Sun called her back and they worked out a day to meet. He decided, since he'd be in town anyway, they could meet on Thursday. He'd make sure Lin had her very own copy of the comic before it got published and while they were at it she could meet Poki. They agreed to meet at the park near Lin's school right after she got out. Come Thursday, he went into the city, dropped off the comic for submission and collected his pay then went to get himself and Poki something to eat before finally going to the park. He let Poki out with a little leash around his neck, but Poki didn't wander far. He truly was an indoor cat. Poki soon came back to Jae Sun and sat on his lap snuggling up to him to fight the cold.

"Is that him?!" a tiny voice came and Jae Sun looked up in time for a little girl – about seven at most – running to him in excitement with Leanne running after her. Jae Sun chuckled and waved at Leanne.

"You must be Lin," Jae Sun said once the little girl made it to the bench. "Your cousin Leanne told me you've been wanting a cat."

"Mommy keeps saying no," Lin pouted and then looked at Poki again. "Is this Poki?"

"Yeah, this is Poki. Forgive him; he doesn't really like the outdoors. He's an indoor cat, but you can pet him if you want. He really likes it when you scratch his chin."

Lin walked closer so she could start scratching Poki's chin and he immediately began to purr which Lin was delighted about. Jae Sun gave Lin her very own copy of the comic that would be published in the Saturday paper and she read it while continuing to pet Poki. To make it more special, Jae Sun took out a pen and drew Poki's paw print as an autograph and Lin went on forever about how jealous her friends would be that she'd met a celebrity. Jae Sun laughed and praised Poki for his star status.

"Thanks for doing this. You made Lin's day," Leanne said.

"It's no trouble," Jae Sun said. "If she ever wants to meet Poki again, just let me know."

"Can we see Poki again tomorrow?" Lin asked.

"No, honey, Mr. Dauer isn't in town tomorrow," Leanne said.

"I'm in town every Thursday to drop off my comics, so if you want, I can bring Poki with me and we can meet here again next week," Jae Sun offered.

"Can I invite friends?" Lin asked.

"Sure you can," Jae Sun said, "but try not to invite too many. I don't want Poki getting stressed out from a big crowd."

"So only invite Hye Jung and Nari," Leanne said, specifying Lin's best friends.

"Okay," Lin said and proceeded to scratch Poki's chin.

"Lin, we'd better get back. You have homework to get done."

"Can't we stay a little longer?" Lin pleaded but Leanne shook her head.

"No, Lin, we need to get back," Leanne said. "We'll see Poki again next week." Lin pouted but did eventually nod.

"Bye, Poki," she said. "Bye, Mr. Dauer. Thank you for letting me meet Poki."

"You're welcome, Lin. We'll see you next week and I'll even bring you a comic again personally signed by Poki."

"Really?!"

"Really," Jae Sun smiled.

As promised, the following week Jae Sun made a second copy of his comic for Lin and made sure to use Poki's paw to sign a tiny autograph. This one being completely authentic. They met at the same spot in the park and this time Lin had her friends with her who were also extremely excited to meet Poki. Poki was a little nervous at first but calmed considerably when there were tiny hands scratching his chin, his ears and his butt all at once. Poki was clearly becoming used to being a celebrity and was quite enjoying it. It wasn't every single Thursday, but it was a frequent occurrence for Jae Sun to bring Poki into the city with him so he could meet with his adoring public. Come February, Lin begged for Jae Sun to come to her school for a Career Day at her school. Normally, the school would bring in cops, doctors, fire fighters; anything that was deemed especially praiseworthy, but Lin had pleaded with her teacher to let her invite Jae Sun and his cat Poki and the principle eventually agreed to the request.

"You're giving a speech at a school?" Yon asked when Jae Sun told her during dinner.

"I wouldn't call it a 'speech'. I'll just be one of about 10 people there talking about what they do for a living. I think the only reason the principle agreed is because he had a classroom full of 7 and 8 year olds begging for it. I think they're more interesting in meeting Poki anyway."

"That's wonderful," Yon smiled. "See? Now aren't you glad I convinced you to get out more?"

"Yes, grandma, you're right as usual," Jae Sun smiled and Yon gently pinched his cheek.

"That's right, I am," she said. "You make sure to tell your parents about this. Eun Mi especially will brag about this to anyone who will listen I'm sure."

"I'll be sure to write home and tell them," Jae Sun said.

On Career Day, Jae Sun went to the school at the time the teacher informed him to arrive with Poki in tow. As his gift to the kids, he drew out little 4x4 pictures of Popo, Bayok and Blu together wishing a Happy Career Day that he had Poki autograph with his paw print. When he arrived at the school, all the children and other men there for career day and the teachers gawked as he walked by. He overheard a child ask one of his teachers why Jae Sun was so big to which the teacher said it must have been something he ate. Jae Sun did his best not to laugh at that one. He eventually made it to the classroom and all the children just stared at him. Lin and her two friends were the only ones that didn't look shocked by his height having gotten used to it and instead just waved at him eagerly.

"Children, children, settle down please," the teacher, Miss Ho as he was told was her name, said and the children eventually settled down. "We will start with Mr. Oh. He is a Fire Fighter in the Bomun-Dong District – I want all of you to show respect."

Miss Ho stepped aside so Mr. Oh could stand before the class and all the children stood from their desks and bowed with a chorus of 'Welcome Mr. Oh. Thank you very much for coming'. Mr. Oh bowed as well and then went on to talk about the responsibilities of being a fire fighter. Each man that had come to speak took their turn receiving the same welcome from the children and once they'd completed their time, they gave the children a little present: fake badges, stickers, little plastic toys and so on. Then it was finally Jae Sun's turn. Miss Ho asked Jae Sun to come forward and once again the children watched in awe of his height. Before Miss Ho could introduce him, one little boy rose his hand.

" Jyu Hei, please wait until the end of the presentation to ask questions. Our next presenter is Dauer Jae Sun. He is a cartoonist for GaiGen Publishing. I expect all of you to show him the same respect you've shown all our other guests," Miss Ho said sternly and like that, all the children stood from their desks, bowed and said, 'Welcome, Mr. Dauer. Thank you very much for coming.'

"Thank you for inviting me," Jae Sun answered back. "So as Miss Ho said, I'm a cartoonist. I'm the artist and author of The Adventures of Popo the Cat. It's not conventional work like your other guests – rather it's what is called 'Freelance' work. That means that I am paid for the cartoons I provide to the newspaper instead of a salary. My day to day work is on a farm south of here. Now that I've introduced myself, who has a question?" Just about every child rose their hand. "Who has a question about cartoons and not my height?" Jae Sun clarified and like that, a few of the kids hesitated and put their hands down but soon lifted their hands again having thought of a new question. "Your name is Jyu Hei right?" The little boy nodded then lowered his hand.

"Is that Popo?" Jyu Hei asked, pointing at Poki who was still in his carrier.

"No, this is Poki. Popo, sadly, passed away when I was in my last year of school. The following spring after Popo passed away, a feral cat made a little nest for herself and her kittens under our front porch. Poki was one of them." Jae Sun reached to the side to open the carrier but Poki didn't come out at first. "Come on, Poki. It's okay; you can come out." Poki made a tiny mewing noise but stayed in his carrier. "Lin?" Jae Sun said and the little girl perked up. "Do you want to help me? I think Poki needs encouragement."

"Okay!" Lin said and hopped out of her chair coming to the front of the classroom. She went up to the carrier and reached in to scratch Poki's chin. Poki started purring and relaxed enough that Jae Sun could reach into the carrier and pull Poki out.

"Thank you, Lin. Since I have you up here, can I ask you to hand these out to everyone?" Jae Sun said and offered the drawings he'd made. Lin accepted and went from child to child handing out the little pictures. "Who else had a question?" A little girl up front rose her hand and Jae Sun pointed at her giving her permission to ask her question.

"Can we pet Poki?"

"Sure you can," Jae Sun said and pulled a chair over so he could sit down. "Everyone that wants to pet Poki, please make a single file line and I'll make sure everyone gets a turn."

All the children lined up except one or two and Miss Ho got them organized in alphabetical order so it was fair. Jae Sun allowed the children to ask more questions as they took their turns petting Poki who, thankfully, was relaxed while in Jae Sun's arms allowed all the children to pet him. Poki purred the whole time he was being petted and that encouraged the two remaining children to take a place in line. After all the children had a turn and they were all back in their seats, Jae Sun thanked the children again for having him and stepped aside for the next presenter. Jae Sun was promised a copy of the school newspaper that would be talking about the Career Day and once he had it, he had it mailed to his parents. After receiving the newspaper, Eun Mi naturally bragged endlessly about it. JJ was proud as well and, following Roshad offering to make a plaque for him, he had the newspaper hung on the wall at the General Store. It was by the register framed and beside it was a plaque with the translation of the story for anyone that wanted to read it.

As he'd promised he would do, Roshad purchased an apartment in their neighborhood for Ashti's use. She then made the trip back to Washington and, while Jaedynn wasn't showing by the time Ashti arrived, fully integrated herself into helping Jaedynn through her pregnancy. Jaedynn was initially hesitant to accept Ashti's help but she quickly proved to be invaluable. Ashti was at the house every day helping take care of Kamron, ensuring the house stayed clean and just being there for Jaedynn if she wasn't feeling well. She was especially helpful during the first three months of her pregnancy when the morning sickness was at its worst. Then came January 1974 when Roshad went to Iran for work and Ashti was there for her.

"Baba!" Kamron cried. Roshad had left that morning and Kamron kept asking for him; nothing Jaedynn did seemed to sooth him.

"Kamron, please," Jaedynn said, on the verge of crying herself. He'd been crying all morning and was still crying when Ashti arrived at the house with a suitcase, planning to stay at the house until Roshad returned.

"Kamron? Why are you crying, Azizam?" Ashti said in English then began speaking in Farsi as she approached and took Kamron in her arms. He continued crying and crying despite her efforts.

"He's been crying since Roshad left," Jaedynn said as she rubbed her eyes trying not to let herself start crying. Ashti said something to Kamron in Farsi then bounced him up and down gently and gave him a kiss on the cheek. She looked at Jaedynn, realized she was doing her best not to cry and started rubbing Jaedynn's shoulders with one hand while still holding Kamron.

"Breath, Jaedynn," Ashti said to her. "He just miss Roshad. He will calm eventually."

Jaedynn could only nod as she tried to calm herself down. However, with Kamron continuing to cry, she couldn't get herself to feel better. Ashti left the couch with Kamron and went upstairs. Several minutes passed of Kamron crying upstairs while Ashti sang to him in Farsi until the crying finally stopped. Jaedynn could finally relax when Kamron was no longer crying and soon Ashti returned downstairs going straight to the kitchen. By the time Jaedynn was calm and had rubbed the tears away from her eyes, Ashti came back with a mug of tea and gold milk.

"Thank you," Jaedynn said as she accepted the cup. "I'm sorry."

"Do not be," Ashti said. "I know is overwhelming, especially right now." Ashti reached down to rub Jaedynn's belly reassuringly and received a kick from the baby. It made Ashti smile and she even opened her eyes for a moment. She closed her eyes again before looking at Jaedynn again. Jaedynn took a big gulp of tea and milk. "Come with me."

Ashti took back the cup from Jaedynn and guided her upstairs to the master bathroom. She put down the cup, turned on the water and waited until it was an acceptable temperature, then put in the stopper so the tub would fill with water. Ashti told Jaedynn to put her hair up and undress and she eventually did as she was told. Once she stepped into the tub, Ashti helped Jaedynn lower into the water. Then she took Jaedynn by surprise when she removed her hijab and her dress until she was naked. Her hair was pinned up in a bun and was a luscious, deep dark brown color. To Jaedynn, it seemed like a horrible shame to cover it. However, once she was undressed, her age at time of her death was all the more apparent. Ashti came to the tub and got in along with Jaedynn.

"Are you allowed to be naked in front of me?" Jaedynn finally asked hesitantly.

"You are woman and family member; there is no issue," Ashti said. "I have upset you?"

"No, not at all," Jaedynn quickly said, "I just wasn't expecting you to join me." Ashti nodded her head gently in acknowledgement then lifted her hand out of the water and gestured with her finger in a downward spinning motion.

"Turn around," Ashti said. Jaedynn did as she asked and Ashti opened her eyes when she heard Jaedynn had stopped moving. Once she knew Jaedynn had her back to her, Ashti came closer as she put some neutral smelling oil in her hands and went for Jaedynn's shoulders first. Ashti applied pressure using the oil to allow her hands to move with ease over Jaedynn's skin but also to moisturize. Jaedynn released a breathy groan and her head fell forward. "You are very tense; you need to relax. Stress is bad for baby." While it seemed like Ashti was stating the obvious, Jaedynn appreciated the sentiment all the same. Especially given it was accompanied by a massage.

"That feels really nice," Jaedynn said.

Ashti didn't answer and instead focused on her task. She rubbed Jaedynn's neck and upper arms with just enough pressure to ease the strain and the chill of her hands soothed the ache in her muscles. When Ashti's hands got under the water to Jaedynn's lower back, she flattened her palms so she could apply pressure differently on that part of Jaedynn's body. The baby started kicking while Ashti was massaging Jaedynn's lower back. She could tell Ashti could feel the baby kicking because she giggled and said something in an affectionate tone.

"What are you telling the baby?" Jaedynn asked.

"I am asking if she likes the massage," Ashti said.

"I certainly am," Jaedynn said. They'd decided to wait until the baby was born to find out the gender this time around but Ashti was positive it was a girl. "How did you get Kamron to calm down?"

"Sometimes, all children need is a song," Ashti said. "He only miss his baba. He will calm as the day wears on. Then when Roshad comes home, he will be a happy boy." Ashti continued to massage Jaedynn's back until the stiffness was completely gone. "Better?" Ashti asked.

"Much better," Jaedynn said. Then she heard Kamron from the other room. He wasn't crying, but he was making a ruckus. "I think we've left Kamron alone too long."

"A growing boy has lots of energy," Ashti said and stepped out of the tub. She dried off quickly and got Jaedynn dried just as fast. She got dressed, put back on her hijab and then said, "I will get Kamron. You dress."

Ashti left the master bedroom while Jaedynn went to the closet to change into some fresh clothes for the day. She went to Kamron's room and Ashti was already holding Kamron and bouncing him up and down. Kamron reached for Jaedynn when she entered the room and she embraced Kamron in a tight hug. He asked about Roshad several times through the month and he'd have fits of crying that Ashti always managed to sooth some way or another. Roshad called home all the time and she'd tried letting Roshad talk to Kamron over the phone, but Kamron would hear Roshad's voice, see that Roshad wasn't there and then start crying so they have to stop doing that.

"You're making me think you don't like me, Kamron," Jaedynn said after she'd finally calmed him down following his latest fit.

"Do not be silly; a child want both parents home. When one is missing, it cause distress," Ashti said. She mixed up the potato and vegetable puree then got a tiny teaspoon's worth onto a tiny spoon that she offered to Kamron. He opened his mouth after a little coaxing and ate his spoonful of food, then immediately spit it out. Ashti tried again and this time Kamron kept averting his mouth. "Oh no; he is picky."

"Most babies I've known are," Jaedynn said and took the spoon and cup of food from Ashti. "I'll add something to this and see if that helps."

As the weeks went by, Jaedynn felt like she was finally getting to know Ashti and was less and less uncomfortable around her. It seemed like Ashti was growing fonder of Jaedynn too, especially when they found a common interest: Columbo. Jaedynn already watched re-runs whenever they were on and new episodes when they aired, but while Ashti was visiting, she would sit down with Jaedynn and watch it. She was so surprised that Ashti loved the show and Jaedynn finally felt like the two of them were bonding. They even went out shopping and Jaedynn learned exactly who Roshad got his frugalness from. Jaedynn was convinced that if she gave Ashti five dollars, she'd find a way to buy half the grocery store with it. Come the beginning of February, Ashti, Jaedynn and Kamron were all on the floor of the living room area together while the radio was on when Ashti tilted her head so her ear was directed at the front entrance.

"Roshad is home," Ashti said. "His car is outside."

"Really?" Jaedynn said and then looked at Kamron. She helped him get to his feet and while he was starting to learn to walk, he was still just learning. At this point he'd mastered crawling and was standing on his own without issue. Kamron fell onto his butt after Jaedynn had gotten him standing but as soon the front door opened, Kamron looked toward the front door and saw Roshad step in with two suitcases in hand.

"Baba!" Kamron said and stood up trying to walk, fell on his butt again then resorted to crawling the rest of the way to Roshad who put down his suitcases, kneeled and opened his arms inviting Kamron to him. Once Kamron made it to the front door, Roshad lifted Kamron up and into his arms giving the boy a kiss on the cheek. He spoke to Kamron in Farsi as he approached Jaedynn and Ashti. He kneeled down and gave Jaedynn a kiss on the lips then gave Ashti a kiss on the cheek.

"Welcome home," Jaedynn smiled.

"It's good to be home," Roshad said. "How was everything while I was away?"

"Alright, but we missed you," Jaedynn answered. Ashti said something to Roshad and he looked at Kamron.

"Is that true, Kamron? Were you giving your maman a hard time?" Roshad asked. Kamron wasn't answering. Instead he was resting his head on Roshad's shoulder sucking on his tiny thumb.

"He just missed you," Jaedynn said and held Kamron's foot. "How was Tehran?"

"Same as always," Roshad said. "I wasn't in Tehran very long. We have a new customer and I needed to go to Shiraz and give them a tour of the farms and the sorting facility."

"Did everything go well?"

"Yes, very well," Roshad said. "Rashida has been working tirelessly to plan the wedding. We have a band selected, the caterer has been selected, all the invitations have been sent out – your side of the family should receive them soon if they haven't already – your dress has been made, though I'm expressly forbidden from seeing it. Rashida assured there will be time for you to try it on and for the dress to be altered if necessary."

"So we're set?"

"Effectively," Roshad said and gave her a kiss. "I'll leave for Tehran again beginning of June to help with any last minute planning and ensure my suit fits."

"And after the wedding, we're going to Chalus, right?"

"Yes," Roshad said, "Just you, me Kamron and the baby; and the nanny."

"Nanny?"

"Yes, Rashida is looking into hiring a nanny for us. It'll allow us a little more private time during our honeymoon. By then, we'll be able to get to work on baby number three," Roshad said and pressed another kiss to Jaedynn's lips when she smiled. Ashti scolded him and swatted between them ordering them to behave decently and they both couldn't help laughing a little.

Shortly thereafter, everyone on Jaedynn's side of the family received their invitations and, as a precaution, they were given two hardcopy responses that they would send both to Jaedynn and Roshad as well as Bastet and Rashida just in case responses got lost. Then worst case scenario, they could call Jaedynn and Roshad to make sure who was or wasn't attending. Sadly, not everyone on Jaedynn's side could come mostly due to work obligations. Ada María reached out to her brother Marcelo requesting that he come to Washington to manage the bar while she and her sons were away which thankfully wasn't an issue. Emma Leigh and Nadeshka would be joining Gabriel and Ariel for the trip to Iran, Kevin and Amber would be attending with the twins as would Heather, Embry, Anatoli and Ivory. Levi fully intended to go so they started making plans as a family to go to Israel after the wedding while Nathan fully intended to see the ancient capital of Persepolis while they were in Iran.

Levi initially intended to go to Israel with his family following the wedding, but then he received his usual letter from Nadja. She was overjoyed to let him know she'd gotten herself a leading role for a play that would be showing at a theatre in London that featured local talent. As she explained, the theatre would raise money for plays written by local writers by hosting fundraisers and this summer season, she would be playing the leading female role in a play called 'Psycho'. "No relation to the movie," Nadja's letter told. She explained she would be playing a character named Rose and the play was a thriller about a man that gets mixed up with a woman he meets at a strip club. She promised to send him a poster the moment it was available as she always did. He had a whole binder of promotional posters for plays Nadja had been in. Each one always had the title and some appropriate but generic picture with the address of the theatre and the dates it would be showing. He'd only seen one of Nadja's plays when they'd stopped through England for his Bar Mitzvah trip to Germany and he'd always wished he could see another. So he started investigating what it would cost for him to fly to England from Iran and then back to Connecticut. Once he knew the price point, he started saving and let his parents know that he wanted to do his own thing following Roshad's and Jaedynn's wedding.

Roshad needed to return to Iran again in March for work but made a point to only be gone a week so he would be home when Jaedynn went into labor and also so he wouldn't miss Kamron's first birthday. She was due in April but he didn't want to risk her being early without him home. March passed without any sign of Jaedynn going into labor but when it was April, Ashti stayed at the house using the spare bedroom so she was available at a moment's notice and able to help with Kamron. When it was the 9th of April, that was when she started to feel her body preparing to go into labor. She was tired and aching, so Jaedynn walked around the house trying to encourage her body to go into labor and Ashti helped take care of Kamron and have her own expertise, but it was days before there was any change.

"I stay in Kamron's room," Ashti said to Jaedynn when she was about to go to hers and Roshad's bedroom for the night after putting Kamron to bed. "You need to rest."

"Thank you, Ashti," Jaedynn said and winced when a contraction occurred.

"To bed; you go to bed," Ashti said as she led Jaedynn to her room with Roshad close.

Once Ashti retreated, Jaedynn got into some night clothes and was in bed and asleep almost instantly. She was asleep by the time Roshad came out of the bathroom following washing up for the night. They called Kyle the next day to make him aware Jaedynn was anticipated to go into labor soon and Kyle instructed that everyone keep a close eye on her and to call him the moment anything changed, however nothing really changed until the 12th. Jaedynn woke that morning to intense pain and Roshad called Kyle so he could come up to Seattle to monitor Jaedynn's progress. Nathan and Ada María came into the city along with Kyle. Kamron started getting fussy when he was being kept away from Jaedynn and Ashti brought him upstairs so he could cuddle but it was really hard to do that while experiencing contractions. She was eventually moved to the large tub they'd filled with warm water as they'd done with her previous labor. Ashti and Ada María wound up being with Jaedynn midway through the day and by the time she was fully dilated and ready to push, Ashti and Ada María held her hands while Roshad held Jaedynn against his chest. Everyone encouraged her along as she pushed and finally Jaedynn felt a gush and release of pressure and Kyle reached into the water and lifted the baby out of the water filling the room with a baby's cry.

"It's a girl," Kyle announced and placed the baby on Jaedynn's chest so she and Roshad could hold her. She was such a beautiful little baby. Jaedynn could already tell Iman had her daddy's nose. While she was pale anyway having just been born, Jaedynn could tell Iman had paler skin like her. Her hair was a black layer of silky locks that were still wet and stuck to her tiny head. Roshad cut the cord and Kyle took Iman so he could weigh her, get her cleaned up and complete any legal documentation that was required.

Ashti and Ada María took Iman downstairs to meet the family while Kyle helped Jaedynn pass the placenta. Pictures were taken of Iman to send to Bastet and Rashida and she was passed around for everyone to see including Kamron. Nathan held Iman while presenting her to Kamron introducing him to his new baby sister. Ashti made sure Kamron didn't get too rough when he started swinging his arms around trying to play. Once Jaedynn was able to, Roshad helped get her dried off and to the bed so she could rest and they took care of filling out Iman's birth certificate: Iman Ashti Javadi. When Iman was finally brought back upstairs, it was to make sure she was fed and Kamron got himself up the stairs wanting to be with Jaedynn and Roshad as well.

Kamron's birthday fell on a Sunday, so the Saturday beforehand wanting to do something fun for the whole family, Jaedynn and Roshad had everyone over to their house that weekend for some swimming and kabobs. With the entire family at their house, there was a lot of hustle and bustle but Roshad kept all their guests entertained. Ariel was even kind enough to make several pitchers' worth of a mix drink for anyone that didn't want beer while Roshad had tea for other guests and lemonade for the kids. Ashti had a few words with Roshad for him allowing alcohol to be at a party, much less his son's first birthday party, but Roshad assured no one would get out of control and everything would be fine. Thankfully, it was. The day was all about Kamron and without negative incident. Jaedynn took it easy given she was still recovering from birth, but the whole family was able to take turns looking after Iman so Jaedynn could give Kamron her undivided attention. Esme and Renesmee made a giant cake and they sang Happy Birthday to Kamron as a large group. Then on Sunday they had a little party for Kamron with only Jaedynn, Roshad, Ashti, Nathan, Ada María, Jacob, Renesmee, Ivory and Anatoli in attendance. They made him another cake and a big dinner and after dinner, they put the cake in front of Kamron while he was in his high chair with a big candle on top. Roshad and Jaedynn were on either side of Kamron with the whole family watching and taking pictures while they all sang Happy Birthday. After the song, Roshad and Jaedynn helped Kamron blow out the candle and everyone clapped for him which made Kamron start clapping with excitement as Jaedynn and Roshad kissed his cheeks.

"I can't believe he's already one," Jaedynn said after she put Kamron in his crib for the night. Everyone had left about an hour prior and Kamron was tuckered out from the excitement and fell asleep without issue once he was put down.

"It still feels like yesterday that he was born," Roshad said with his arms wrapped around Jaedynn. "Try not to dwell on how fast he's growing up. Instead, revel in what he's accomplished already and will accomplish in the future."

"That's easier said than done."

"I know," Roshad said. "It was a piece of advice Bastet gave me a long time ago and I had to remind myself of that every time my children grew older. When they had children of their own, I gave them the same advice."

"Did it help?"

"If it didn't, my children never said anything," Roshad said, placing a tender kiss to her neck. Ashti stayed with Jaedynn and Roshad for the rest of May until she returned to Iran though only for the sake of wedding preparations.

"Next I see you, it will be as a bride," Ashti said to Jaedynn when they dropped her off at the airport.

"I can't wait," Jaedynn said and hugged her. "Thank you for everything, Ashti. I really don't know what I'd have done without you. Kamron, say goodbye to Madar Jun." (Grandma) Ashti took Kamron in her arms and put a big kiss on his cheek while Kamron hugged her.

She spoke to him in Farsi and while he understood her, he had a hard time replying, still learning how to speak both English and Farsi. Jaedynn handed Iman over so Ashti could hug her granddaughter goodbye as well. Roshad, Jaedynn and the children stayed in the waiting area while Ashti boarded her plane and Kamron managed to half walk/half crawl to Ashti before she entered the plane so he could give her one more hug. Jaedynn came to get Kamron and they finally left after the plane took off.

"I'm actually going to miss having her around all the time," Jaedynn admitted once they were leaving the airport.

"The feeling's mutual," Roshad said. "I'm happy you and maman were able to really bond."

"I think once I wasn't scared to death of her anymore it made everything easier," Jaedynn said. "Columbo reruns certainly helped too."

"Yes, maman is deeply lamenting the loss of your weekly Columbo viewings together, albeit temporary," Roshad said. "She is entertaining possibly moving here permanently."

"Honestly, if I return to work that wouldn't be a half bad idea," Jaedynn said. "I guess we'll play it by ear."

That same time in May, Levi got a reply from Nadja. He'd expressed that, after some research and checking his finances, he'd be able to afford to fly to London after the wedding in June and was hoping he could come see her perform. Her reply was to send him a ticket stub for the best seat in the house for opening night. It couldn't have been more perfect timing. However she also included the poster as she always did, but this was downright scandalous compared to all the others. He could tell it was Nadja – she had the same face he remembered from last he'd seen her, but she'd grown up to say the least. She was in a squatting position wearing red high heeled shoes and her knees were together. She was actually nude in the picture which took him by surprise, but nothing was showing. Her knees prevented her private regions from being visible and she had her arms wrapped around her chest keeping the majority of her breasts out of view save for a slight peak of flesh. With the exception of her bright red high heeled shoes and red lips, her body was in black and grey. Her hair was wavy and disheveled and she wore a sultry smile. The whole backdrop was pitch black while all written information was in white. The title was right beneath her: she's sweet 'til she's 'PSYCHO'. Psycho was the largest of the words advertising the name of the play itself and there was even a playbill among her letter with a synopsis of the play, the names of the actors and who they were playing.

"Dear Levi,

I'm so happy to hear you'll be in London! I've enclosed a playbill, a Poster as per usual and tickets for opening night. You should have seen papa when he saw this poster. He was in such a huff but I wouldn't change it. I think it really does my character justice. I won't say too much; I would hate to ruin the plot for you. And don't worry about getting a hotel. I've got a couch that pulls out into a bed, so you'll get a good night's sleep."

Her letter continued with details about her day, stories from rehearsal and a reminder that she fully expected a souvenir from Iran and greatly looked forward to seeing him again. He made sure to hide the poster from his roommate, but he found himself looking at it all the time when he was alone. He was reminded of the two times they'd been able to really spend time together following Anatoli's wedding and after his trip to Germany and how much of a crush he'd had on her. She had such an effortless air of confidence and a dazzling smile that put a sparkle in her eyes. He couldn't believe he still remembered it so well. Honestly, seeing this picture wound up reigniting that crush from his youth. He finished his finals that month and stayed in Connecticut, already having his ticket to Iran for the wedding. The plan was for his family to fly to Connecticut, get dinner together as a family and catch up (Evalynn would be joining them in Connecticut for the same purpose), then they'd all fly to Iran together.

Roshad left beginning of June but went straight to Isfahan not long after his mother had left. A week before the wedding, Nathan, Ada María and Jaedynn made the trip to Tehran while the rest of the family would fly in Thursday before the wedding allowing everyone a chance to relax and site see if they wanted before the wedding on Saturday. The plan was to host a large dinner the night before the wedding as well but everyone would receive those details when they made it to their hotel. When Nathan, Ada María and Jaedynn landed in Tehran, there was a limo driver waiting outside for them with a sign in English. The driver took them to the palace and, much like Jaedynn when she'd first seen it, Nathan and Ada María were baffled by it.

"He's not joking about this being a palace," Ada María said.

"It's smaller than the Shah's palace, but honestly I'm thrilled with that. I've seen pictures and it's crazy," Jaedynn said.

"Honey, this is crazy," Nathan said. "So will the Shah find the time to come to your wedding between screwing people on oil prices?"

"Daddy, stop," Jaedynn said with a sigh.

The Shah had recently been interviewed regarding the gas shortage that had become quite the hot button issue. Gas prices had jumped from $.38 per gallon the previous year to $.55 per gallon which was leaving Americans furious. Given a decent percentage of oil came from Iran the Shah was issued the blame, though it wasn't entirely inaccurate. His argument was the price of oil needed to rise along with the economy and if the economy went down, so did the price of oil. Although Roshad understood people's frustration, he was of the opinion the Shah wasn't being unreasonable though the way he was expressing this was not the best. In his interview, he'd argued people needed to be more 'disciplined' and it would lead to stabilization. It was basic economics realistically. Of course, the reaction of Americans was mixed to say the least.

They came to a stop and the driver walked to the passenger's side opening the door so Nathan, Ada María and Jaedynn could step out of the limo. Jaedynn held Iman while Ada María held Kamron, and, as before, a group of people came outside going straight to the trunk to retrieve their luggage. "Jesus, is this someone's house or a hotel?"

"Rashida!" Ada María said jubilantly when she saw Rashida and went into the shade to the entrance of the house where Rashida took Ada María's free hand and the two pressed a kiss to each other's cheeks three times.

"It's so good to see you, Ada," Rashida smiled, "How was your trip? I'm sure you're exhausted."

"The children hated the flight," Ada María said, "but the seats in first class were fantastic! We'll need to thank Roshad for setting that up."

"When you're going to be on a plane for a full day or more, first class is the only way to fly," Rashida smiled. "Please, come in; come in! If you're up for it, I must give you a tour."

"Can we put a rain check on that? I'm fucking dead," Nathan said once he'd entered the palace with Jaedynn.

"Yes, of course. It can wait," Rashida said. "Are you hungry? I can have something prepared for you and show you to your rooms."

"Do you have a menu?" Nathan asked sarcastically.

"Dinner will be herb stew with lamb and saffron rice – a true classic of Iranian cuisine. For dessert, it'll be Gaz and tea. In the meantime, I can get some fruit, bread and tea for you."

"Anything sounds good about now," Nathan said. "What's Gaz?"

"It's pistachio nugget. Kamron, habibi, come to Aunt Rashida," Rashida said as she reached out to Kamron. Ada María handed Kamron over who got a touch fussy at first but Rashida was able to sooth him rather quickly. "You've grown so big since last I saw you; you'll be a man in no time."

"Too soon if you ask me," Jaedynn said.

"Now, now, Jaedynn, do not lament Kamron growing up; instead revel in his accomplishments along the way," Rashida said, echoing her mate's words, and looked right at Iman. "And this beautiful creature must be Iman. Ashti would not be silent a moment when she returned to Tehran. 'Iman' this and 'Iman' that. You've thrilled her beyond words giving her a granddaughter."

"Thank you," Jaedynn smiled. "Would you like to hold her?"

"One moment; allow me to adjust," Rashida said as she maneuvered Kamron in her arms so she could then accept Iman. Iman was sound asleep and rested against Rashida's shoulder contented to remain that way. "A vision – she looks so much like her baba."

"She really does," Jaedynn smiled and brushed her finger over Iman's tiny cheek. She'd tanned a bit but was still rather fair. Olive toned was a good word for her complexion. And her hair was that thick, rich black and was already getting longer. "So where's Bastet and Ashti?"

"They're already in Isfahan," Rashida said. "I hate to press, but we should try on your dress now. If anything needs altering, we need to have it to the tailor immediately."

"Okay," Jaedynn said. Rashida returned Iman and Kamron to Nathan and Ada María and led them to their rooms.

Once they were situated and could relax, she instructed one of the servants to bring them food while she led Jaedynn to the master bedroom where her dress was being held. It was under a cover, protected from the elements and prying eyes. Jaedynn undressed as Rashida removed the cover and she revealed a pure white dress. Even the thread was white. The dress had intricate beading on the chest and sleeves with what looked to be pearls. She walked up to the dress afraid to even touch it.

"Are these real pearls?" Jaedynn asked, staring at the tiny, pale pink orbs.

"They certainly are," Rashida smiled.

"Did Roshad make them?"

"No, no, Pearls are made with mucus that an oyster or clam produces; sadly Roshad cannot make pearls," Rashida said, "but these were harvested from a farm in Greece I believe. This was the hardest part to sew into the dress. The seamstress has been sewing these pearls into the dress, veil and hijab since January carefully adding them without breaking them."

"Wow," Jaedynn said in awe.

"I'll help you into it," Rashida said as she began untying the back of the dress and removing it from the form.

Jaedynn stepped into the dress as gently as possible, terrified the slightest misstep would ruin it. Once she had the long sleeves over her arms and her hair was moved aside, Rashida secured the corset in the back. It was tight to be sure but the sleeves fit comfortably. Without her shoes on, the dress was already floor length which concerned Jaedynn until she was shown the wedding shoes: flat white shoes with pearls sewn in a gentle triangle shape with the point directed forward to the closed toe. Rashida helped Jaedynn into her shoes and quickly got her hair pinned up into a messy bun so she could put her wedding hijab on. It was so elaborate compared to the others she'd worn before. The top was like a lace cap with pearls sewn in and attached to that were yards of white silk that was so soft against her skin. One yard wrapped around her neck and wound up covering the pearl detail on her chest and shoulders which she really didn't like. Then there was a yard and a half to two yards of silk behind her that acted as a train, but it didn't reach the floor.

"Are you ready to see yourself?" Rashida asked.

"Yeah," Jaedynn nodded.

Rashida guided Jaedynn to look at herself in the mirror. Her makeup wasn't done, so she focused only on the dress. She tried lifting the front of her hijab so she could actually see the pearls. Rashida helped adjust the fabric a little so it wasn't covering all the pearls which made it a little better, however she couldn't lift it too high. Her shoulders were partially bare, but just barely. The top of the dress reached up to her clavicle bone and the sleeves hugged her arms with pearls sparsely sprinkled up and down the fabric. The bodice hugged her while the skirt of the dress flared out at the hip but it was unaltered white silk save for the hem of the dress which had thick white thread lining it.

"Can I see it without the hijab?" Jaedynn asked.

"Of course," Rashida said and started getting it unpinned. "Don't worry; you'll only have to wear this for the Muslim ceremony. After we leave the Mosque and get pictures, you'll be in your veil."

Rashida gently took off the hijab and with it gone, the dress was instantly more beautiful, no longer being hidden under yards of fabric. Rashida grabbed a lace veil that also had pearls sewn in sparkly throughout and she got it pinned into Jaedynn's messy bun. This time, she smiled and even started tearing up. She felt so beautiful.

"Those are tears of joy I hope," Rashida said.

"Yeah," Jaedynn nodded and brushed the tear away from her eye. "I love it. It's so beautiful. Roshad hasn't seen it right?"

"Absolutely not," Rashida said, "and he'll not see it until your wedding day."

"Thank you, Rashida," Jaedynn said, "Its perfect."

"I'm so happy you love it," Rashida smiled and gave Jaedynn a kiss on the cheek. "I'll get Nathan and Ada so they can see you."

Rashida left to retrieve Nathan and Ada María but Nathan was already asleep. Ada María woke Nathan up so they could go to the master bedroom to see Jaedynn in her dress and they loved it as much as she did. Nathan and Ada María received their tour the following day but were interrupted by someone at the door with gifts from Isfahan. As he'd promised in accordance with tradition, Roshad sent Jaedynn wedding presents ranging from dresses, clothes and toys for their children, jewelry and more. Among the clothes for their children were outfits they could wear for dinner the night before and the wedding day. Rashida took Nathan, Ada María, Jaedynn and the children out and about around Tehran to enjoy the city before they had to leave taking them to notable sites, good restaurants and Hookah lounges that were especially popular among the locals. Scarlet and Ivory flew in on Wednesday and they slept in the car as they drove to Isfahan that same day. After arriving, they went straight to the hotel so they could get some sleep before they went into full swing of wedding preparation. The morning after arriving, Jaedynn was brought downstairs bright and early by Rashida where Ashti was waiting with a young woman Jaedynn had never met before. She wore a long sleeved yellow shirt and a black a line skirt but the sleeves of her shirt were made from a breathable material for comfort with floral patterns sewn in and she wore a scarf that wrapped in such a manner that it looked like a hood but allowed her face to show.

"Jaedynn," Ashti began once Jaedynn and Rashida had approached, "This is Morvarid. She will be Kamron's and Iman's nanny. She speak fluent English so she can communicate well."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Javadi," Morvarid smiled and bowed her head.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too," Jaedynn smiled and bowed slightly. "Are you looking forward to going to Chalus?"

"Oh yes, very much," Morvarid said. "I'm afraid I've never been out of Isfahan so this will be a fun adventure. Would you mind terribly if I met the children?"

"Of course. My sisters and I are getting ready but we'll be down in a moment."

Rashida stayed downstairs with Ashti and Morvarid while Jaedynn returned upstairs to get dressed. Morvarid got to meet Kamron and Iman just before they all left for the store so Ivory and Scarlet could try on their dresses. Thankfully they required minimal alterations and the seamstresses promised to have them done end of day Friday. They got to do some sightseeing but returned to the hotel before nightfall. Any of Jaedynn's family that was attending the wedding had arrived at the hotel by that point and they all decided to order room service and eat together in Jaedynn's Bridal Suite. The next morning, Roshad requested to be able to sit down with him and Ada María to discuss the Mehreh which he then had to remind what that was. Since Ada María was going to get her nails done with Jaedynn, Scarlet and Ivory, she wasn't involved with the Mehreh tradition, but it was extremely straight forward. Bastet, Rashida and Ashti sat with Roshad across from Nathan and Roshad asked what he would like as a dowry of sorts. Nathan insisted Roshad already did everything he'd expect of the man and no further gifts or dowry were necessary and that about settled it.

When it was finally time for dinner that night, a limo came to pick up Jaedynn and her family at the hotel. Of her family that was able to come to Iran were Kevin, Amber and their children, Jaedynn's brothers, Nadeshka, Emma Leigh, the Cullens except Carlisle, Jacob and Renesmee as well as Embry Jr. who was attending with Heather and Evalynn. Jaedynn made sure there was milk available for Iman so Morvarid could look after the children at the hotel. Ashti stayed behind with Morvarid as well. Jaedynn and her side of the family were able to fit in one large limo and the driver took them to the restaurant, but when they stepped out, it was much more of a banquet hall. Rashida introduced the group to the host who led them into the building to a room that was off to the side. There was a sign above the open double doors, but Jaedynn was more focused on the room packed with people.

"Are we in the right room?" Jaedynn said Rashida.

"Yes, it's the right room," Rashida said. "This isn't everyone that will be at the wedding tomorrow, but it's at least half."

"Are you serious?" Nathan asked. Jaedynn eventually noticed Roshad and finally felt relaxed despite the crowd of people. Once Roshad saw her, he smiled and excused himself from the conversation he was having so he could welcome Jaedynn. "I didn't realize there would be so many people to this thing."

"It's mostly work friends," Roshad said to answer Nathan but went straight to Jaedynn to embrace her in a hug. "I missed you," he said to her.

"I missed you too," Jaedynn answered with her cheek against his chest, but she pulled away and started brushing the spot so as to get rid of the makeup residue. "I'm sorry; I think I got makeup on your coat."

"Don't worry about it," Roshad smiled and pressed a kiss to her lips. "Allow me to introduce you to everyone."

Roshad led Jaedynn and her family further into the banquet hall to start introducing them to people. Every introduction had to remain brief – there were well over 150 people to say hello to. Jaedynn's family wandered off to have some appetizers that were being handed out, champagne for those that wanted it and tea for those that wanted it while Roshad and Jaedynn walked around to meet with all the guests. Most of the guests spoke English and anyone that didn't Roshad was able to help move along the conversation. It wasn't until sitting for dinner that Jaedynn and Roshad were able to have even a brief moment alone. The two of them had a sweetheart table that was close to the table where the family was seated. All other guests were seated at large tables that accommodated 12 people per table.

"I know I said this already, but I really missed you," Roshad said, holding Jaedynn's hand under the table. "I miss Kamron and Iman too. How have they been?"

"They miss you," Jaedynn said. "Kamron has been moody since you left."

"Still?" Roshad asked.

"Yeah," Jaedynn said. "I was actually going to suggest Kamron get ready with you tomorrow."

"Absolutely," Roshad said. "What about Iman? How is she?"

"Already growing," Jaedynn said. "Wait until you see her: she hasn't had her first smile yet, but I can tell she's trying. She definitely misses you too. Sometimes when she's crying and I can't seem to sooth her, I'll put on a little of your cologne and that'll put her right to sleep." Roshad smiled apologetically and kissed her hand.

"How have the children liked Morvarid so far?"

"Kamron's starting to warm up to her," Jaedynn said. "Ashti is with her so that'll make things easier."

"Good," Roshad said. "I only got to meet Morvarid once, so I was worried."

"She's very sweet," Jaedynn said. "She's really excited to go to Chalus."

"Are you excited?" Roshad asked.

"Yes, very," Jaedynn smiled.

The dance floor was open and people were dancing throughout the night. Roshad and Jaedynn soon joined in the merriment with their guests while Jaedynn's family did the same. There were no shortage of children at the party but most only spoke Farsi leaving Tristan and Lilliana feeling a little left out, so Anatoli kept them entertained. The party lasted well into the evening before Jaedynn and Roshad, at the very least, had to leave so they could get some sleep before their big day tomorrow. Rashida and Bastet held down the party from there making sure all the guests were entertained. Bastet promised he'd come to get Kamron and his things in the morning so he could get ready with Roshad and with that, Jaedynn and Roshad left the party hand in hand. Her family was still at the party but was assured a limo was ready the moment they wanted to leave.

"Tonight was a lot of fun," Jaedynn said. "Seems a little weird to have a reception before we've even gotten married."

Roshad smiled, "It was more of a reception for guests that are coming in from out of town. Most of our guests didn't attend, though they were invited."

"How high did the guest count come to?"

"We invited around 600 people; we got back 565 RSVPs."

"I don't believe you know all those people."

"I know some more than others," Roshad said. "Any of our guests that were worth meeting were at tonight's reception. Our ceremony at the Mosque will be considerably smaller: just our families."

"Promise?"

"I promise," Roshad said. They made it to his car, another Porsche though the make, model and year Jaedynn wasn't sure, and Roshad opened the door for her so she could get in then came around to the driver's side.

"Should you and I really be alone like this before our wedding day?" Jaedynn teased.

"I won't tell if you don't," Roshad smiled and got the car into gear. "I haven't seen my wife in nearly a month. Can you fault me wanting some time alone?"

"Not at all," Jaedynn said. "You haven't seen my dress, right?"

"No," Roshad said, "I've been forbidden from entering our bedroom at the palace. I just know it's white."

"That goes without saying," Jaedynn smiled. "I admit I hate the hijab I have to wear at the Mosque. It's beautiful, but it covers up so much of the dress and it's a horrible shame to do that."

"The makeup artist will ensure it's applied correctly," Roshad promised, "and once we've finished at the Mosque, you can remove it. The ceremony will only be about 30 minutes. The officiant will give a speech about marriage, the sanctity and contractual obligations of marriage and so on. I confess it's always been my least favorite part of any wedding – It's impersonal. Our Persian ceremony will be more personal and joyous."

"I know it will," Jaedynn said. Roshad glanced at her and smiled.

"You look radiant tonight."

"Thank you," Jaedynn said and blushed. "Did you want to come see the children before you go back to your hotel?"

"I'm in the same hotel as you," Roshad smiled, "I've just made a point to remain unseen."

"So I could have seen you when I got here?" Jaedynn asked. Roshad pressed a kiss to Jaedynn's hand.

"Please forgive me. I was trying to remain respectful," Roshad said. "However, I would love to see the kids if I could."

Once they'd returned to the hotel, Roshad and Jaedynn walked up to her bridal suite. Ashti and Morvarid were relaxing while the children were both sound asleep with the lights low. Roshad did his best not to wake them. He held Iman for a moment cuddling with her before laying her back down in her little bassinette then shifting his attention to Kamron. He gently picked up Kamron to hug him and the boy stirred, smelled Roshad's cologne and held onto Roshad refusing to let go as he drifted back to sleep. Roshad tried putting Kamron down, but when he tried, Kamron started to cry so Roshad lifted Kamron back up.

"I guess you're taking him to your room now," Jaedynn said and rubbed Kamron's back. Roshad brought a hand up to cover Jaedynn's over Kamron's back.

"I'll see you at the altar," Roshad said and pressed a kiss to Jaedynn's lips.

Ashti began to scold but the kiss was brief so Ashti let it go and Roshad left with Kamron in arm. Ashti carried Kamron's things with to Roshad's room leaving Jaedynn alone with Morvarid and Iman. Jaedynn went to sleep in the bed that Iman's little carrier was rested while Morvarid went to her own room for the night. Jaedynn woke up the next day not to Iman crying, but to a finger poking her shoulder. She rolled over and saw Ivory in bed with her.

"Morning Bride-to-be," Ivory said. "You'd better get out of bed. Hair and makeup will be here in an hour and I bet you'll want to eat something."

"What time is it?"

"11," Scarlet said from the other bed she was sitting on the edge of, drying her freshly washed hair. "We let you sleep in; your mother-in-law was not so generous to us. She had us out of bed at the crack of dawn but we just slept in here until 9."

"Where's Iman?"

"I have her," Morvarid announced, giving Iman a bottle. "This is the last of what you pumped yesterday, so you woke up just in time."

"I'll do that now then," Jaedynn groaned, still really tired.

While Jaedynn did that, Scarlet got Jaedynn's dress out and ready and Ivory took a shower. Jaedynn showered last so they were all ready for the makeup artist and hair stylist by the time they arrived. Rashida, Ashti and Ada María joined but Rashida and Ashti made sure to do their own makeup, keeping it minimal while Ada María was more extravagant. Ashti was already in her favorite Tyrian purple dress and Rashida wore a gold dress and overcoat that was completely closed. She wore her favorite jet black shoulder length wig with a matching gold headscarf, but it was not tightly secured the way Ashti's was done. Ada María wore a bright red dress that was floor length and was even long sleeved. She'd been provided with a hijab she would wear at the mosque as had every female member of Jaedynn's family. Since she'd be acting as Jaedynn's witness for when she and Roshad signed their Nikah, or their marriage contract, she had to be very conservatively dressed with a head cover to accompany her hijab while Scarlet only had to wear the lace cover. Iman was put in a tiny white dress that mirrored Jaedynn's although it didn't have pearls on it while Scarlet and Ivory wore their burgundy dresses which were long sleeved. The sleeves were made from gold breathable lace that came up their shoulders and around their necks and their hijab scarves they had to wear at the mosque were a matching gold silk.

"These things are really snug," Ivory said after hers had been secured following her hair and makeup being completed. "So is this what it feels like to be a nun?"

"I suppose it's what it feels like to pretend you're a nun," Scarlet said currently enjoying her comparatively loose fitting hijab. Ivory stuck her tongue out at Scarlet but immediately retracted her tongue when she'd tasted the lipstick that had been applied to her lips.

In Roshad's room, he was awake bright and early as was Kamron. He'd slept in Roshad's bed for the night and come morning when he was hungry, he started repeating 'Baba," over and over while shoving Roshad's shoulder until he was awake. Roshad ordered breakfast for Kamron and once he was fed, the two of them got cleaned for the day. Bastet came to the room to get ready with Roshad. They both wore suits, but Bastet wore a gold tie that matched what his wife was wearing while Roshad's tie was burgundy with gold thread sewn into an intricate design and on his lapel he wore a burgundy peony secured with a gold pin accented with a pearl. Kamron was in a tiny black suit with a burgundy shirt. They were dressed and ready well in advance so they left for the Mosque by 1.

"You look nervous," Bastet observed once they were in the car.

"I'm excited," Roshad said as a smile went across his face. "I can't wait to marry her again."

"I can tell," Bastet said. "I haven't seen you so eager to marry since your wedding to Miriam."

"It was another time in my life," Roshad said as a hint of sorrow came to his voice for what he'd lost. Then he shifted his mind instead to what he'd found in Jaedynn. "As you said yourself: it is time to start a new life. One in which I can be happy again."

"You've been living a new life," Bastet chuckled. "We're all very grateful you've met Jaedynn."

"As am I," Roshad said.

Jaedynn, her parents and her bridesmaids all rode in the same limo to the Mosque while the rest of the family were in different cars. Nathan took Jaedynn elsewhere while Bastet directed the guests to where they could be seated, making sure they removed their shoes before entering. The men were told to sit to one side of the room closest to the table where Jaedynn and Roshad would sit while the women and children were kept to the back. The officiant was already in his seat as was Roshad. Ivory was directed to take a seat at the table beside where Jaedynn would be seated and once all but the father of the bride and the bride were in their seats, Bastet took his place at the table beside Roshad. Rashida came out to come get Nathan and Jaedynn once they could enter and Nathan walked Jaedynn over to the table. Once Jaedynn was seated, Nathan went to the group Rashida had indicated and sat on the floor with everyone else. Roshad looked at her and smiled.

"You look beautiful," Roshad whispered to her. Jaedynn blushed and returned his smile, but she didn't have a chance to reply before the officiant began the ceremony.

He spoke entirely in Farsi but Roshad had translated the Nikah for Jaedynn so she would know what she was signing. Much like a Ketubah, it was a promise that they would love each other, Roshad would be a good husband, father and provider and that she in turn would be a good wife and mother. Ivory would be signing in English, but Jaedynn had requested Roshad teach her how to spell her name in the Farsi alphabet so she could sign the Nikah that way. The officiant talked until he directed someone to come forward and it was a man that was holding their rings; simple gold bands that they'd already been wearing anyway that had been removed for the ceremony. Ivory and Bastet signed the Nikah first, then Jaedynn and Roshad. She took a moment to write slowly, wanting her script to look as pretty as possible. Then when she passed the Nikah to Roshad, he signed his name effortlessly with his left hand and with beautiful handwriting. When the ceremony was over and the officiant proclaimed them husband and wife, Roshad held Jaedynn's hand but, given their location, it was all the more affection he initially showed.

Since this ceremony had comprised only of family members, they all remained at the Mosque for well over an hour and a half taking pictures with their family, together just Roshad and Jaedynn, together with their children and so on. Once they'd finally finished, Roshad went to the next venue alone with his family while Jaedynn went with her own, proceeding yet again with the traditions. Bastet was there to lead everyone to their seats which were all towards the front. They all gawked as they were directed. The building itself was surrounding an enormous garden with a small pond that even had swans swimming around. It was breathtaking and the head of it all was not a traditional altar. Instead, it was a table filled with mirrors, candles Amber had carved for them, almonds, eggs, pomegranates, spices, a Quran, a book of poems and so much more. What was overwhelming was the number of people that were there. It looked more like a guest count one would see at a business conference, but all the guests were dressed to the nines. Rashida got Jaedynn out of the hijab and into the veil and instantly Jaedynn felt more beautiful. Her dress was unobstructed which was what she really wanted. Roshad took his place at the Sofreh Aghd first and not long after, Nathan walked Jaedynn down the longest aisle he'd ever seen in his life and brought her to the table so she could sit beside Roshad. This time, Jaedynn was absolutely glowing and Roshad took her hand in his as the officiant began the ceremony.

This ceremony was much more personal. Jaedynn and Roshad fed each other honey from their pinkies, Jaedynn's female family members rubbed blocks of sugar together onto the train of white silk that was being held above Roshad's and Jaedynn's heads and when they were announced as husband and wife, Roshad pressed a kiss to Jaedynn's lips and the giant crowd filled the air with applause. Afterwards, all the guests were directed to the other side of the garden where they were served food while Jaedynn and Roshad took yet more pictures with their families. Kamron and Iman were included in most of the pictures, especially ones at the Sofreh Aghd and the photographer made sure to get everything before the sun started to set. By then, guests were being served dinner and drinks. All the chairs were replaced with tables for their guests to sit while the Sofreh Aghd was adjusted so Jaedynn and Roshad could have their plates in front of them. Their first dance together as husband and wife was to Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison which Jaedynn nearly cried when she heard it, remembering one of their first dinner dates at Roshad's apartment in New York. Kamron and Iman were included with them in the dance with Jaedynn holding Iman and Roshad holding Kamron, and the dance floor was opened to all the other guests once they'd completed their first dance. Brown Eyed Girl was the only song that was in English after which the music that was played by the live band was entirely in Farsi. After the cake had been brought out, guests were instructed to clear and surround the dance floor.

"I see Rashida decided to take Ashti's wish to heart this time," Jaedynn whispered to Roshad.

"Oh, no; she hasn't," Roshad chuckled.

When all the guests were surrounding the dance floor, Rashida presented the knife she held and directed the band to start playing. The song that played included a flute, a string instrument that rested on a man's lap and two percussion instruments. Rashida began to move, but her body was obstructed by her overcoat. However, she quickly removed her overcoat showing off that she was wearing a skirt that fit very close and tight to her hips while her midriff was almost completely bare. She actually wore a gold top that covered her neck and her arms but ensured the guests could see her belly as she moved her body in jerky movements in keeping with the percussion of the music. Her hips, chest and belly moved as though they were independent from her all while she kept the knife on display presenting it to the guests. Guests started to surround Rashida and were throwing money at her as she danced.

"Is it okay that they're throwing money at her like that?" Jaedynn asked Roshad.

"Yes, it's part of the festivities," Roshad said. "After she's done dancing, we'll cut our cake." Jaedynn glanced at Ashti and while her eyes weren't open, she was clearly miffed.

"I think Ashti's a little irritated," Jaedynn said.

"Yes, I'm afraid so," Roshad said. He leaned forward and gave Jaedynn a kiss.

Ashti's visible disapproval aside, Rashida's performance was well received. She finished her dance by getting close to the Sofreh Aghd and presenting the knife to Roshad which he accepted. After the music stopped, she bowed to the guests and went to get her overcoat while Roshad and Jaedynn walked to their cake to cut it. Kamron got away from Morvarid and ran over to Roshad and Jaedynn while they were cutting the cake, so Jaedynn picked him up and they made him part of the experience. Roshad fed a piece of cake to Kamron first then another to Jaedynn and Jaedynn fed Roshad his bite of cake. It was a lemon cake and the sour filling complimented the sugary yellow cake and made Kamron squint a little, but he was soon trying to get another bite of cake which Jaedynn fed him. While their guests were enjoying their cake and other desserts being offered, Roshad and Jaedynn went around to everyone to thank them for coming.

"You look radiant, Jaedynn," Hashem said when Jaedynn and Roshad made it to the table he and Roksana were sitting with their son Darius.

"Thank you, Hashem; you look ravishing yourself," Jaedynn said and Hashem and Roksana chuckled as Jaedynn kissed the man's cheeks.

"She thinks I'm ravishing," Hashem said jokingly to Roksana.

"Down boy; she's a married woman," Roksana teased and shook Jaedynn's hand while giving her kisses on the cheek. "You look beautiful, Jaedynn."

"Thank you, Roksana," Jaedynn said.

"I finally got to meet Iman; she's absolutely beautiful and Kamron's such a handsome little boy."

"Thank you," Jaedynn smiled.

"How old is he now?"

"He just turned 1," Jaedynn said.

"Ah yes, he will be telling you 'no' soon. Our prayers are with you," Hashem said.

"He's already starting to say no," Jaedynn said, "although I'm not sure he understands what that means. He'll say 'no' even when he actually wants something."

"Yeah," Hashem and Roksana said at once.

"It's only the beginning, my love," Roshad smiled and kissed her ear. "So will you be joining us for breakfast tomorrow?"

"Most definitely," Hashem said.

They spoke with the other guests at the table as well before finally moving on. It took them nearly an hour to speak to everyone at the wedding so when they could return to their table, it was a huge relief. Jaedynn could finally see her family on the dance floor enjoying themselves and it made her smile. Ivory came over to give Jaedynn a hug and let her know everyone was having a fantastic time and guests didn't start leaving until it was nearly midnight. By contrast, Morvarid left with Ashti and the children closer to 10, it being well past the children's bedtime. Jaedynn and Roshad finally left around 2 in the morning after all their guests had left and all that remained were immediate family members.

"You know how to plan a fun wedding, Roshad: I'll tell you that much," Nathan said as they were all leaving the venue.

"You mean I know how to plan a fun wedding, dear Nathan," Rashida smiled and patted Nathan's shoulder.

"It was absolutely amazing," Ada María echoed.

When they'd returned to the hotel, Jaedynn stopped by Morvarid's room wanting to check on Kamron and Iman. Both were sound asleep as was Morvarid, so she left them alone to join Roshad to their honeymoon suite. Their luggage had already been moved to that room as had the bag Jaedynn's dress was to be kept in.

"Can you help me out of my dress?" Jaedynn asked once Roshad had closed the door and he stepped over to untie the corset. When her skin was being exposed, she could feel Roshad running his knuckles over her back and it made her blush. Once the dress was completely undone, she stepped out of it and was left in the white panties and bra set she'd worn. "Can you get that hanger for me and I'll put the dress away." He did as asked and Jaedynn put the dress on the hanger into the bag and got it zipped up so it was safe. Then she took off her veil and put that in the little box it had been kept in. Roshad came up behind her and started kissing her neck while he brought one hand up to her hair to take out the pins and undo the bun. "How do you still have any energy left after today?"

"Make no mistake: I'm exhausted," Roshad whispered, "but what man would I be if I did not attempt to woo my loving bride." Jaedynn smiled and leaned against his chest with a sigh.

"I swear if I weren't so tired..." she trailed off.

"That is what morning is for," Roshad smiled and lifted Jaedynn into his arms walking to the bed. He laid Jaedynn down and unsnapped her bra for her knowing she wouldn't want to sleep in that. He got out of his suit while Jaedynn tossed the bra to the side and got under the covers ready to go right to sleep. She felt the bed shift as Roshad got under the covers with her pressing a kiss to her head. "I love you, Jaedynn."

"I love you too, Roshad," Jaedynn answered and turned over so she was facing him as he held her.

In the morning, she smelled something familiar and when she opened her eyes, there was a mug on the nightstand that she recognized as containing gold milk tea. She overheard the sound of water in the shower and she could hear Roshad singing from the bathroom. She giggled a little as she sat up and took a sip of her tea. She looked at the clock and saw that it was 10:30 and she couldn't believe it, so she got out of bed and went into the bathroom removing her panties and stepping into the shower behind Roshad.

"I'm sorry, but do I know you?" Roshad teased.

"It's 10:30," Jaedynn said and came around Roshad so she could get some of the water. "We need to be downstairs for brunch by 11."

"I called Nathan; he knows we're running behind," Roshad said. "We didn't get back until 2; everyone's a little behind."

"Still, it's not right to be late to our own event," Jaedynn said. She heard Roshad chuckle a little and she started washing her hair. "How long will it take us to get to Chalus?"

"Two days," Roshad said. "We'll stop in Tehran for the night and then go the rest of the way tomorrow."

"Good; I don't think Kamron could stand being in the car for a whole day," Jaedynn said. "How far is Chalus from Tabriz? You said an old home of yours is a museum there? Maybe we can take the kids?"

"That's another 8 hour drive I'm afraid," Roshad said, "otherwise I would love to do that. I'll take you one of these days, I promise. Tabriz is a stunning town by the mountains; I don't know why it's been so long since I've gone back."

"When was the last time you were there?"

"Last I visited my son's grave," Roshad said. "That was right after the war."

"Maybe we should make that part of our visit," Jaedynn said. "If it's been so long since you've visited your sons and daughter, it would be good to see them."

"Not this time," Roshad said, "but we will. It would be something we do for a full visit or I would do that before coming home. Most of my children are buried in Iran, but they're all over and one is in India."

"Oh, right," Jaedynn said. "We'll do that someday." They were quiet for a moment as they washed up before Jaedynn broke the silence with a thought she had. "You know Anatoli's power, right?"

"Yes, I do," Roshad said. "Your heart is in the right place, but I cannot do that. My sons are from a different time. The culture shock alone would be too much to put on their shoulders. That's to say nothing of bringing them back and only for them to miss their families. All my children had lives of their own. They had spouses they loved, children they loved, grandchildren….to bring them back would be cruel."

"I understand," Jaedynn answered sadly.

"Though believe me, it has crossed my mind," Roshad said. "Not a day goes by that I do not miss my children. But they lived fulfilling lives; their time on this earth was blessed with riches and happiness, but it has passed. I have to accept that." Jaedynn turned around and hugged Roshad. He returned her embrace. "Come; we need to get ready. It's not right to be late to our own party."

He kept his voice lighthearted and they got themselves ready just in time to make it downstairs to meet everyone. Kamron ran right to Jaedynn begging to be held and Ashti held Iman through brunch. With the exception of a small handful of people Roshad had invited to be there, it was only family that was at the brunch and they all fit at 1 large table in one of the dining rooms of the hotel. It was so relaxed and they all talked for hours until Jaedynn and Roshad decided they really did need to start the drive back to Tehran. Morvarid, who'd previously been enjoying a morning to herself and a chance to relax after the long night, got her things together as soon as she heard from Ashti they would be leaving soon and was downstairs with her things ready for Roshad and Jaedynn once they'd reached the entrance of the hotel.

"Have a good time, Jaedynn," Nathan said as everyone was telling her goodbye.

"You too," Jaedynn said. "Make sure you get plenty of pictures."

"We will," Ada María said and gave Jaedynn a hug. She went to each family member wishing them a good time for the rest of their trip and when she got to Levi, she hugged him as well.

"You said you're going to England?"

"Yeah," Levi said. "I've got tickets to opening night."

"Have fun," Jaedynn smiled encouragingly.

Roshad, Jaedynn and Morvarid made the trip with the kids to Tehran first and Morvarid was awestruck by the palace when they'd stopped there. Bright and early the following day, they made the rest of the drive up to Chalus and Morvarid encouraged Kamron to look out the window to see all the beautiful sites while she held Iman. Jaedynn was so relieved that Kamron was comfortable with Morvarid now. The entrance to the home in Chalus was lined with row after row of pomegranate trees until they finally reached a large house – not so much a palace but definitely a mansion – that was right by the water. The outside was white with blue tile work around the windows, a large door and the pillars. When they got out of the car, Jaedynn took a deep breath. She loved it already. The air was crisp and damp, the tide of the sea rang in the distance, the smell from the pomegranate trees filled the air and the sun was out and beating down. The mountains were in the distance and lush forest was also visible.

"I understand why you spend your summers here," Jaedynn said when Roshad had come up behind her. "Why only the summer?"

"Because in winter it snows," Roshad smiled and kissed her cheek. Roshad said something to Morvarid and she answered, already holding Kamron and her own suitcase. Roshad had most of the suitcases, Jaedynn carried one while she held Iman and Roshad led them into the house.

The doors were these enormous oak doors with the image of pomegranate trees carved into the wood. He opened the doors and the first room was this expansive space. At the center of the room was this little pool that even had fresh water in it. The floor of this pool had tile work and was the image of a pomegranate field with farmers harvesting the ripe fruit. Jaedynn looked around already able to imagine the room being filled with people while Roshad roamed around making everyone feel welcomed. The room stretched out to the other side of the property where there were floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the sea and it went out onto a patio space with lounge chairs and iron tables. Roshad led Jaedynn and Morvarid to the other side of the room where there was a hallway and to their right was a large set of stairs. The stairs curled around until they reached the landing of the top floor.

Much like the palace in Tehran, the landing and hallway had several windows but these looked out onto the sea instead of a large garden, but the view ended when the rooms began. Roshad showed the way to the room the children and Morvarid would be using first. There were two cribs, one for Kamron and another for Iman, and there was a single bed for Morvarid to use. Jaedynn put Iman in her crib and Kamron stayed in the room with Morvarid while Roshad led the way to their bedroom. It was further down the hall – enough so that they would have some degree of privacy but close enough that if there was a problem, Morvarid could come get them right away during the night. When they stepped into the bedroom, Jaedynn saw the view and was in love. Mountains, the sea, the smell of the water coming in; what was there not to love? There were curtains covering the balcony area, but they were sheer and did not obstruct the view at all. The bed was to the left of the entrance and there was open space but it wasn't nearly so much as the palace in Tehran. The bed looked really comfy with a red comforter and red sheets, so she walked over and fell backward onto the bed with a moan.

"Comfy?" Roshad asked.

"Yes, very," Jaedynn sighed, opened her eyes and held her hand out to Roshad asking him to join her. Roshad smiled back at her and came to the bed, lying beside her with his legs hanging off the edge along with her. "I change my mind: we can move to Iran, but we have to live here."

Roshad chuckled and joked, "I knew you would see things my way." He brought her hand to his lips to kiss her wrist and she sighed. "Do you not like Tehran?"

"I loved Tehran," Jaedynn said, "but this place is tranquil. All I hear is the sea water outside and that's all I want to hear."

"Exactly why Bastet and Rashida stay here year round," Roshad smiled. "Tomorrow I think we'll let Kamron play in the water."

"He'll love that," Jaedynn smiled. "Unless she wants to join, we'll let Morvarid take tomorrow to herself. I think she could use a break from the kids."

"We'll offer," Roshad agreed. He rolled over so he could give Jaedynn a kiss on the lips. It lasted a moment until he lifted his head so they could look into one another's eyes. "Until then, I would say we're overdue on consummating our marriage."

Jaedynn giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck and was silenced when their lips met again. They enjoyed an hour together just the two of them before they heard a gentle knock at the door and Morvarid saying Iman was hungry. Jaedynn got into a robe and followed Morvarid to the children's room to attend to Iman then Roshad came to the children's room after he'd gotten dressed. Kamron was still napping so Roshad left him alone and took a seat beside Jaedynn while she was feeding Iman. By the time Iman was full, Kamron started to wake up and when he did, he went right to Roshad and Jaedynn for attention. Bastet had made sure there was food in the kitchen so Roshad cooked them a big dinner and they all sat on the patio so they could watch the sun go down and look out onto the sea.

The next day, they got in their bathing suits though Morvarid remained conservatively dressed and stayed by the shore side dipping her toes in the water while Roshad and Jaedynn played with Kamron and Iman in the water. Kamron had a blast that day playing in the water so it became a frequent activity. Given he'd suffered through nearly a week of wedding preparation and being with Morvarid and Ashti more often than Jaedynn and Roshad, it was the least they could do. It was more like a family vacation than a honeymoon and that was just fine with them. Of course, that time was also filled with enjoying the World Cup.

Roshad had made sure a TV was set up at the home in Chalus so they could all watch the games together as a family. Sadly, Iran was not in the World Cup that year, but West Germany, the host country, was as well as Brazil. When Brazil received 4th place, Roshad couldn't help the bit of smug satisfaction though he promised he'd not rub it in Gabriel's and Ariel's faces too much next they saw each other. Jaedynn rooted for Poland since they had some really good players from what she could tell while Roshad had a hunch that Germany would take the title. Poland took 3rd place and when the final match between Germany and Netherlands played against one another, Roshad was on the edge of his seat the whole game. Seeing Roshad so excited made Kamron excited and he cheered every time just about anything happened on the screen. Roshad explained the game as often as possible, teaching Kamron the rules and what not, but his focus was predominantly on the game. When Germany scored its final score of the game, winning the match and the World Cup, Roshad cheered and Kamron was cheering right along with him even if he didn't quite understand what all the excitement was about. That same night, Kamron slept in Jaedynn's and Roshad's bed with them with Iman in a bassinette near their bed. Kamron was between Roshad and Jaedynn. With his wife and son snuggled up to him and his daughter sleeping nearby, Roshad savored the joy and peace that washed over him in that moment.

Following the wedding, Nathan, his wife and kids went further south so they could visit Persepolis while Kevin and his wife and kids made the trip to Jerusalem with the exception of Levi. He was on the next plane to England and arrived in London with literally hours to spare. He'd been in the airport and flying a total of 7 and a half hours and the jetlag was getting to him. Desperate for a nap after getting off the plane, Levi stayed at the airport and closed his eyes but he didn't let himself sleep for long. After his nap, Levi went outside and hailed a taxi requesting to be taken to the theatre where the play was showing. He still had another hour before the theatre was opened to patrons, so he walked up the road – his suitcase still rolling behind him – and had some food and a beer at a pub. He kept it light, wanting to make sure to reserve as much money as possible for flowers after the show as was customary. He stopped at a flower shop that was still open and bought a bouquet of assorted flowers that included yellow and red roses, purple tulips and white baby's breath as accents all wrapped in paper and a little red ribbon tied at the base. He just hoped she would like them.

There was a sizable crowd outside the theatre waiting for entry and the majority was men. Given the type of poster that was featuring the play, Levi wasn't surprised. When they were able to take their seats, Levi went to a seat that was dead center of the audience. It was close enough that he could see the stage clearly but far enough away that the whole stage was visible. Once he was seated, he kept his suitcase situated in front of him between his legs and the bouquet of flowers resting on top of it waiting for the play to begin. A voice filled the room indicating to all the patrons to please take their seats and as people were still taking their seats, the lights dimmed but the room didn't go black until everyone was seated. Just before the curtains opened, the sound of music began playing. He didn't initially recognize it, but it was definitely pop music. Then when the curtains pulled aside, there was a catwalk on the stage with three men sitting at a table together with beer bottles in hand and the stage was kept dark the way a strip club would be. The music eventually drowned out but didn't go completely away as the three actors began their dialogue. One man was singing along with the music that was playing just before they started: In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry.

The three men at the table exchanged dialogue with the lead, Jeff, informing the audience through their lines that it was his birthday and his friends were treating him to a night out. After their exchange and set up, the lighting changed as an announcer came onto the speakers to introduce the first dancer for the night stage named Rosie Tips. The theatre filled with the voice of James Brown telling how he wants to be a sex machine. Just as the music itself for Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine played, out came Nadja sauntering onto the catwalk with a sultry smile and her hips swaying sensually along with the music. Levi remembered from her letters that this would be the first play she was in that her parents would not be seeing and he could see why. She was in black thigh high stiletto heeled shoes, black fishnet stockings, red lace panties and a lacey red corset that was completely see through except at the cups and her hair was curled in an unruly but sexy mass landing right at her shoulders.

When she came out on stage, Levi could only gawk at her. The song was mostly slow moving and all the more she did for the most part was swivel her hips, spin around and get on her knees to accept money from extras and from the main character. There was an exchange between Nadja and the male lead, Jeff, in which she accepted money from him but gave him an especially inviting smile before crawling on her hands and knees to someone else. She stood back up returning to a slow gyrating movement of her hips and once the song was fading out, she left the catwalk returning backstage. The three men on stage talked about her alluding to her apparent liking towards Jeff and when she returned out on stage, it was shown as her walking along the floor where guests would be while an extra was dancing. The scene progressed with Nadja, introducing herself as Rose, and Jeff talking to one another and were displayed as hitting it off.

The second scene was of Rose and Jeff out on a date getting to know one another and four more scenes after that effectively showed the two of them having a honeymoon phase to their relationship although Nadja portrayed a girl that was extremely possessive at times, getting worse as the honeymoon phase progressed until towards the last scene of the first half, Jeff's friends were telling him he needed to end things with Rose and him not listening to them. Then the curtain closed and patrons were given a 20 minute intermission to get snacks, use the bathroom or anything else they needed. Not wanting to cart his suitcase with him, Levi stayed in his seat waiting for the play to resume. The lights dimmed after 20 minutes and there was a small musical interlude before the lights turned completely off, the curtain parted and opened to a scene in which Rose picking a fight with Jeff over something minor that he'd done. He'd given her what she perceived as an insufficient birthday gift: chocolates and flowers rather than something more worthy, like jewelry.

The rest of the play progressed with Rose becoming more and more erratic. It actually left Levi feeling really uncomfortable. He started thinking about Jaedynn and her experience- it was extremely unsettling. Levi, and he suspected everyone in the audience, was rooting for Jeff to get out of the relationship but that wasn't how the play ended. The final scene in the play may have been the worst part. Jeff and Rose were arguing and it was Jeff's final straw and he told Rose he was leaving her. She warned him not to and to stop packing his bag which he ignored and that was Rose's last straw. She grabbed a knife, charged at Jeff and forced him on the bed, then a white curtain fell with red lights on and silhouetting Rose and Jeff as she stabbed him repeatedly. Then the lights turned off, leaving the stage dark. Then some music started playing but it was low and deeply inappropriate: more pop music. This time The Beatles specifically. The curtain that had fallen rose back up and when the lights turned on, Jeff was on the bed covered in fake blood while Rose was at her vanity humming along to the music she had playing on her radio while she was applying her lipstick. She stared at herself in the mirror a moment making sure her appearance was perfect, adjusted her corset so her breasts were pushed up to overflow from the cups and then stood up once she was satisfied. She left her vanity and walked over to a door, but before leaving, Rose turned to look at her bed.

"See you when I get home, baby," Rose said with a smile on her face, opened the door and stepped through it and the stage went black again.

When the lights came on again, all the actors were on stage and the patrons started clapping as row after row of actors came forward to bow. Nadja and the other actor that played Jeff were the last to bow to everyone and Levi clapped with more enthusiasm when Nadja took a bow. Even now she dazzled him. Her unruly curls framed her face although her makeup was visible even from where he was sitting. He knew she couldn't see him, but for a moment she looked in his direction and just like that he felt this pull to her that until this moment had only been a glimmer. When he realized what was happening, his clapping slowed and all he could do was stare at her.
