Episode 22: Guardian Angel part 5

Imprinted on the ground of the reflective floor was a shape that looked like a compass rose. The 12-foot symbol was pulsating with white light when Lillian and Hal got there. She had him stop right by one point of the rose. "Why stop here? This doesn't look like Silver City."

"How would you know what Silver City looks like?" Lillian asked with a smirk.

Hal snapped his fingers as he went. "Oh yeah…" then he pointed at her. "Good one."

Then suddenly as if walking into the light from a shadowy corner was Mary. She had Orabella, Lolita, and Decimos right next to her as they stopped on the opposite point. Mary froze in seeing Lillian standing next to Hal. "Ma-Mama?" she stuttered. She was feeling all sorts of emotions. Happiness, sadness, grief, love. She was seeing her mother right their in front of her. This wasn't a memory or a vision. She was here.

Lillian woman held her hands out in a welcoming gesture. Seeing the sincere smile on her mother's face instantly put aside those feelings and let instinct take Mary into a running sprint. She threw her arms around her mother's waist and buried her face into her chest. "It's really you this time," she said in almost a whisper as tears started coming down her face.

Lillian hugged her daughter back, a tear or two trailing down her cheeks as she said, "My little Cherry. Oh so big you are now…"

"There's so much I want to say," Mary said looking up.

"I know…" Lillian said. She then looked up at Hal as she finished with, "You found your family who loves you…." She reached out a hand to Hal. Mary smiled and did the same. The man was taken aback. He had waited in silence as to not disturb the touching moment but looks like he was a part of it. As Hal joined the group hug, Mary couldn't stop thinking she got what she could only have dreamed of. A moment between her mother and true father.

The Bullivaxion watched amused at the sight until, on their right, came Killowag and Ilana into the light. Killowag had spotted Mary, Hal, and Lillian first, watching confused at the sight. Then he looked the other way and his eyes went wide. "Orabella…" he gasped.

The Bullivaxion women smiled in greeting as Lolita and Decimos yelled, "Daddy!" and ran to him.

As if he was back on Bullivax Vic, coming home from work on a long day, Killowag got down on one knee. He embraced them in a hug that looked like it would never let go. "I'm… I'm so sorry…" he said, his voice starting to crack. "I tried everything—"

"It's not your fault daddy," Lolita cut in.

"We still love you," Decimos added

Orabella came forward with Ilana stepping away from Killowag to put a hand on the Bullivaxion woman's shoulders. They gave each other a nod of gratitude before Orabella kneeled next to her husband. The Bullivaxion man put a hand up to stroke the cheek of his wife, "Orabella… I…" He wanted to tell her about Galia, even though she probably knew.

Orabella smiled, and said jokingly, "Could never get your words together around me, could you?" Then she put a hand on her husband's cheek and said sincerely, "You never forgot us, never stopped fighting, and never stopped loving. Never stop. It's who you are."

Killowag gave a cheeky smile of his own. "You got me there."

Ilana looked at both families reunited in this place, her head held high in a sense of pride of for them. Then Ilana heard footsteps behind her, coming from the left side of the shape they stood on. Knowing well who it was, the woman waited until she hard, "Ilana…" before she turned around.

Razer stood with his mouth hanging open at the sight of his former love. Martin chuckled at the look on Razer's face before slapping him in the back and saying to Ilana, "He's all yours." Then he stepped away.

Ilana walked up to Razer who could only stare in bewilderment. Once she stood in front of him, she held out her hands, palms facing up. Razer looked down at them, still trying to process what he was seeing. But then, ever slowly, he put his hands on top of hers. She held his hands tight so that he could interlock them with hers. Then he looked up at Ilana as she said, "Looks like you came back for me after all."

"I… I didn't…" He replied shamefully.

Ilana smiled sadly, "I know." She leaned closer with a happier smile to say, "And that's why I'm so happy you're here. I want you and Aya to have my blessing. Live life. I want you to be happy."

Razer gave a small shake of his head, almost not wanting to believe this out of old guilt. But he had moved on from that. And Martin made sure to remind him of that. Razer gave a small nod before leaning his head down to close the gap between the two. Their foreheads touched as they closed their eyes. Noses touched as a deep breath past between them.

Hal had looked up from his hug between Lillian and Mary. He had been hearing the reunions but never really payed attention until he heard a familiar voice along with Razers. Lillian and Mary stepped back to see Martin walk up towards Hal. The lantern blinked several times, even rubbing a hand over them as he said, "Sorry it's just… last time something like this happened I had Oram particles messing with my head. It wasn't really you then, but…"

Martin sniffled a little, rubbing his nose with his sleeve before he put a hand on his son's shoulder. "Is this better?"

Hal chuckled as he held back some tears. "Yeah but... maybe..."

"Yeah, yeah I hear you. Bring it in, champ" and Martin pulled Hal into a hug witch the lantern gladly took it. Hal started to silently cry into his shoulder as Martin said, "I'm sorry, Hal. I left you and your brother alone for so long."

"It's ok..." Hal managed to say though his tone of voice went up an octave. "We made it through."

"I wish I could have been there, but i'm happy you made it without me." Then Martin pulled away and motioned to everyone, from the dead to the living. "You took in a couple of lost misfits and made them a home. You are one of a kind, Green Lantern. My son." Martin finished by wrapping a hand around Hal's shoulders.

The lantern wiped the tears away as he said, "Managed to learn something from my dad." Then he cleared his throat and ushered Martin towards Mary. "Speaking of which, you want to meet your granddaughter?"

Lillian smiled as she pushed Mary forward to greet Martin. the girl said, "It's great to meet you... ugh... Grandpa?"

"Oh yeah, you're a Jordan all right," Martin said, tussling the girl's hair which made her laugh.

Once everyone got settled, Killowag was the first to ask, "Now what?"

That's when a star in the middle out of the billions in the sky began to shine bright. Everyone looked as it glowed a bright neon green. Suddenly the star came flying down towards the middle of the compass on the floor. Everyone stepped back as it stopped short over the water like surface before a blinding light took place. No one could see for a few short moments before everyone's eyes adjusted to see a human man standing in the middle.

His black, high collar cape went down to past his knees. It was held together just below his neckline using a gold clasp. He wore a red long sleeve with a crest over his chest that looked like a power battery. He wore red boots to match. His green mask the same color as his pants. If now was the time to be funny, Hal would have called him a living Christmas tree.

Instead, Hal's head quickly connected the dots as he realized he had heard someone describe this man to him before. "I know you," He gasped. Said man turned to Hal with a smile. Then Hal added, "Gil Broome told me about you. You somehow met him in his old universe. You inspired him to become Steam Lantern because you told him you were a Green Lantern. But I never understood how since I was always told I was the first human."

"Not in the conventional sense of a Green Lantern," The caped man began. "I was just a human man living in the early 20th century on Earth when a ring came into my possession. It was a piece of Ion that had somehow escaped the Central Battery and went through several transformations of the ages before coming to me as a ring. At least that's what the ring told me. I never went to Oa or was associated with the Corp."

"But just because he wasn't an orthodox Green Lantern didn't mean he didn't know the inner workings of the galaxy," Ilana added.

"We may know everything but he can explain it a lot better," Martin began. "It's the reason we all know to bring you to him."

"You can all call me Alan Scott," the caped man said. "And I hope to be of service."

The living green lanterns looked at each other in bewilderment. The first Green Lantern human the Guardians probably had no idea about because Ion decided to have a piece of him go an explore the galaxy. It probably shouldn't be a surprise at this point.

The one blue lantern was the only one not distracted by the news and went straight to asking, "We were trying to contact Aya using mediation. But we ended up here in the realm between the living and dead instead. Why?"

Alan crossed one arm over his chest as the other scratched his chin in thought. "I'm going to be honest with you. I don't know why." Alan then dropped his arms by his side as he explained. "But my guess is because of The Entity."

"The entity?" Killowag cut in, "You mean Ion?"

"No. The Entity. It has no name. It is The Entity of life."

Ilana interjected. "When it comes to entities it's a concept… beyond time and space that those who've passed on can't even understand. All we know is that The Entity gave birth to all life in the universe."

"Not one single group of people or planet was the first of it's kind," Lillian added. "That is to say one life is not above another."

Alan continued, "Thankfully, having had part of Ion by my side in life, I know about entities more than the dead. More than the Guardians. Enough to say the reason you were all brought to the Path to Silver City and still live is because of them. The Entity is the only one to have that kind of power."

"So why did they bring us here is the question?" Mary asked. "Especially since we were looking for Aya. Why at this moment?"

"Because we're not just looking for Aya," Hal began. "We're also preparing for war. The Entity is that if life… because there is one of death. Alan, can you tell us anything about Nekron? How we can we stop him?"

Alan put his hands to his hips and his foot tapped the ground pensively. "Not how to stop him. Even less about the extent of his power. Like I said, I know enough but not everything about entities. Nekron is… is something different. All I know is his history. When life was born, so was death. A balance that had to be kept. But Nekron wanted to break the cycle so that death ruled all and tipped the balance."

Hal raised an eyebrow. Something didn't click there, but he let Alan continue. "So Nekron began to harvest the power of the dead. The dead who did not feel satisfied during their living days. That single act created what many know as Hell. Over the ages, his power-hungry nature breeched the dead. His essence like a cloud that manifested in sector 666."

"That's where Razer and I found his tower," Mary said sadly. Lillian pulled her daughter close to assure her.

Razer frowned, making Ilana hold his arms tighter to comfort him. Alan nodded and said, "Don't worry, you two are not the first ones fooled by Nekron. The reason a tower was there was because a living cult was established there long ago. The tower built to honor Nekron and have a place to write the Book of the Black."

"A Sighter was part of the cult," Lillian added, "So it is a Sighter who spoke first of the prophecy."

"So when the prophecy came to pass Nekron became a physical form. And the power of death had gotten all those years made him a powerful physical entity. All he need was an army. So Nekron promised the dead he would return them to their living loved one. It was a trick. In the end, their dead bodies became the Black Lantern puppets you know."

"And those who were satisfied in life, like us," Oreballa explained, "Remain in Silver City."

"To be fair," Martin cut it. "Those Black Lanterns are victims as well. The real problem is that good for nothing Nekron."

"So Nekron didn't need a living host ring? That doesn't make any sense."

Killowag grumbled, "But he is the death entity, right? That's why he wants to destroy the others. It makes sense."

Alan seemed to nod slowly, but Hal caught a glimpse of doubt in his eyes. He wasn't really sure. The caped lantern looked to Martin and gave him a curt nod. Then Martin whispered to Hal, "Keep thinking about it, champ. You may be on to something." Suddenly he became more transparent, the glittering stars of his skin becoming brighter.

Hal gasped, "Dad!" and he reached out to try and grab him.

Alan Scott began to speak, "One thing is for sure, The Entity allowed you to come here to not only seek answers but to close ties." Razer felt Ilana's arm wrapped around his begin to lessen. He looked to see she too was fading and the stars glow more. She stepped away with a sad smile as Alan continued, "A war is coming and your fates are unknown. The guidance of loved ones and the loved ones of your fellow lanterns will help you." Orabella, Decimos, and Lolita gave Killowag one last hug before they began to fade and glow. Alan finished strong, "Whether in the final battle or after peace is restored." Lillian gave Mary one last kiss on the forehead.

Soon every one of the dead, even Alan, were nothing but clumps of glowing light like fireflies hovering next to the living lanterns. In a voice as loud as thunder, all the loved ones who have guided the lanterns here said in unison, "Our strength lives in you." Then like shooting stars, they shot forth into the star-filled sky. The last thing the lanterns remembered was a blinding light before they found themselves back in the caves of Oa.

A.N: I'd sum it up but I actually have to get going to a Christmas light show. But I think I'll leave you all with tissues and a crying fest. Also fun facts down below. See you all in early January for the update to the next episode! Happy Holidays and a new year to ALL! I'm KikaKatTIOI, peace out!

So for those who want to know why each character had a certain 'pathfinder' character and star destination:

Killowag: Ilana was his pathfinder because she represents Rebirth. So the east Star means, like our own sun, rises in the East on a new day. Perhaps a new adventure is in story for Killowag?

Razer: Martin Jordan is his pathfinder because he represents Pleasure. West is his direction because west completes a cycle. Where will Razer end up?

Mary: Orabella, Decimus, and Lolitta are her pathfinder because they represent Acceptence. South is her direction because even if it's not an ideal path, it is one she must take.

Hal: Lillian is his pathfinder because she represents Hope. North his direction because he's going into the unknown but with a little hope on his side.
