Changes Sequel – III. War + Epilogue – Epilogue Part 82
Future May 2054
Lily shut off the water in the shower and reached for a towel. She quickly dried her body and applied lotion before she brushed her wet hair. Afterwards she tip toed to her bedroom to get dressed, not wanting to wake Bucky who was still sleeping on the couch with Rebecca tucked against his chest and Alpine sleeping on his shoulder, and sighed heavily when she looked at her after baby body in the mirror. She straightened and turned to the side, looking at her still slightly pudgy middle. Rebecca's birth six months ago had clearly screwed with her healing factor, which should have taken care of her body right after birth. Obviously, it hadn't and she didn't understand why. It annoyed the hell out of her and she decided that she should either ask her mom or Jamie about that matter. So she got dressed, smiled at her engagement ring and went to the med bay, looking for either one of them and ran into Jamie, who was working on a computer. He looked up to greet his sister and asked what the matter was. "I think something's wrong with my healing factor," she said and he stopped typing to look at her.
"Why do you think that?" he asked and used the office chair to roll over to her like a little kid would do.
"I'm still pudgy. After Noah my healing factor took care of everything right away even though I was nursing him. Now I look bloated," she sulked and went over to one of the beds after Jamie beckoned her to do so.
"Maybe you're pregnant," he joked.
"Ha-fucking-ha!" Lily said and glared at him. "I'm seriously annoyed by this."
"Alright, alright," he quickly said to not anger her further and pulled the ultrasonic device closer. "Let's check what's the matter with you. I'll also take a blood sample to run some tests."
Lily sighed and pulled up her shirt. Jamie first prodded and pressed gently on her stomach, then frowned. Lily looked at him with concern and startled as he squeezed the cold gel from the bottle on her stomach. She tried to lay back and relax, but she was anxious and on edge. The look on her brother's face concerned her very much. She needed to know what was the matter with her and that now. While she looked at the ceiling and Jamie did his job, she began to count the tiny lamps and dots above her. He cackled. "What's so funny?" Lily demanded to know and Jamie full on laughed. "What?!"
"I don't know whether to smack you or not. From a doctor's perspective speaking!" Jamie said and turned the screen around. "Congrats."
Lily frowned as she saw the screen and then gave her brother another death glare. "Jamie… This isn't funny!"
He nodded. "Yeah, it's not. I told you not to have sex for 6 weeks even if you have a healing factor. Obviously, you didn't listen at all. It's not your healing factor that is screwed up."
"I'm serious! It's not funny!" Lily said again and took the paper towels he handed her to clean up her stomach.
"I am not joking, Lily!" Jamie said dead serious and typed in some commands before he noted things down and went to get a blood sample next. "I'm not joking at all. Your uterus felt enlarged that's why I did the ultrasound."
She stared at him in shock, then at the screen which displayed a perfect 3D model of an embryo that was looking right into the camera. She didn't even feel how he drew blood or noticed how he gave the vial into a machine for a thorough analysis. Her eyes were glued to the screen and her heart was beating rapidly. This couldn't be real. He was messing with her.
"20 weeks along. It's a boy by the way," Jamie commented after the machine had printed the results and he went over them quickly after he had sat down in front of her again. "Blood and hormone levels are fine. So your healing factor's working."
"Please tell me you are messing with me, Jamie…," Lily muttered and stared at him with wide eyes.
He shook his head. "I'm not." He looked back into her eyes and it suddenly seemed to click in her mind.
"Fuck…," she cursed and lay back down, her hands covering her face.
"Well…. There's this invention called condoms, you know, which I told you to use for a while…" He shrugged as she glared at him with one eye.
"I thought I can't get pregnant while nursing Becca!"
"Are you also nursing her at night and all the time or do you feed her additionally as I've seen you do?" he asked and the look on her face spoke volumes. "There you go. Congrats." He patted her knee and couldn't help but cackle again.
"Fuck!" Lily cried again and sat slowly up. "How far along am I again?"
"Believe it or not, but 5 months already. Which, considering that Becca is just 6 months old, is a record by itself," Jamie told her and handed her the ultrasound picture. "However… Not as uncommon as you might think. Plus, Bucky is enhanced and you've got a healing factor, so…" He shrugged. "I just don't know where you're hiding that baby. You don't look 5 months pregnant."
Lily stared at the picture. "He'll drop dead when I tell him…"
"I can keep a bed ready for him," Jamie joked and laughed as she threw another glare into his direction. "Congrats by the way," he added and nodded at her left hand which made her blush. "So he finally asked you?"
"Yeah…" She smiled and turned the ring thoughtfully. "You are really not messing with me?"
Jamie chuckled and shook his head. "Nope."
"So Steve and Bucky agreed on acting as witnesses. They will come to court next week. Then it's time for your hearing and statement too. We'll go through everything together beforehand, so don't worry about it. I know you're scared," Jack said and tried to soothe Jaden, who sat opposite of him and was cuffed to the table and chair.
"Scared isn't the word I'd use…," Jaden muttered.
"I know…," Jack said and closed the file with a sigh. "Listen, it's possible they'll let you go but that you will be given a dishonorable discharge. I'm sure the prosecutor aims for the angle that you left your assigned position regardless if you got abducted or not. He's running out of arguments."
Jaden met his gaze. "So either way I'm fucked. No one will hire me with a dishonorable discharge…"
"We'll fight it! You got abducted against your will. Your former squad mate confirmed it and Jamie's A.I. is still working on all the videofiles we've got. As notorious as Hydra was with their documentation I'm sure your abduction is on it somewhere."
"A week isn't a lot of time though…"
Jack nodded but was determined. "We'll make it. Okay?" he said and Jaden nodded barely noticeable. Jack looked behind him and saw three SHIELD soldiers looking at him impatiently. "I gotta go. Try to sleep tonight, alright?"
"You too," Jaden said, trying to smile and watched his brother leave before the soldiers came in to take him back to his cell. There he fell on the bed with a sigh and stared at the ceiling. He knew Jack did his best as his lawyer but the nagging voice in his had told him it was fruitless, that death would await him at the end anyway. His blue eyes caught sight of Damiel, who was sitting next to him on the ground. Jaden still didn't get why the angel was punishing himself like this and didn't go home.
"Don't even start," the man said warningly.
"Did you read my mind?"
"No. You get that look on your face," Damiel said and got up to retrieve the tray with food that was slid into the cell. He sat down next to Jaden with the tray on his lap and handed him the bottled water and sandwich. "I don't require food, so eat."
"No way. You haven't eaten anything at all in days," Jaden said and tore the sandwich in half before he downed half of the water and handed it over to Damiel, who gave him a displeased look but finally gave in and began to eat. Jaden updated him quickly on what Jack had said and the angel stopped chewing.
"A week…?"
"Yeah…," the feral nodded and stared at the blank wall opposite of them. "If… If they sentence me… I don't want you to do something stupid to yourself. I know we are linked due to your essence in me but…" He shook his head. "Don't. Promise me you won't kill yourself or let those Heven angels kill you."
Damiel looked up to the camera above the door that was constantly watching them. He knew they also recorded the audio, so he took Jaden's hand that lay on the bed between them and began to tap his fingers. Jaden frowned first but figured that it was morse and concentrated on deciphering it. To the camera it probably looked like they were holding hands and he couldn't care less about what SHIELD thought. Damiel repeated the morse and Jaden's jaw went slack. His head whipped aside and determined blue eyes looked back at him.
If they do, I'll take you away and we'll hide.
"Feeling better?" Jamie asked after he had withdrawn his hand from Bucky's spine and stepped back a bit to give his patient room to move. He watched how Bucky carefully stretched, then twisted his upper body, first slow, then fast. "Any pain?"
"No?" Bucky said surprised and sat back down. "What did you do?"
Jamie pulled a screen closer with his powers and told his A.I. to load the 3D scan of Bucky's spine. "See that here?" he asked and pointed at something that was barely visible. "It's a piece of bone that must have broken off after you fell and broke your spine. It got lodged too close to your spinal cord and compressed it. That's why you were in pain and your legs weren't reacting properly. I didn't see it on the normal MRI. I'm sorry."
Bucky waved off. "Don't worry about it. Thanks to you I'm still alive," he said and tried his back again. "The pain's gone already."
"How are your legs?"
"Better. They feel better at least."
Jamie smiled satisfied and noted it down. He had told Bucky that he also wanted to check on his left shoulder and the plate that had been grafted to his skin and had been partially torn off during the fall. He knew it was painful and even with the serum the former Avengers couldn't live off strong painkillers forever.
"What is that?"
Jamie looked up and followed Bucky's gaze, watched how the man got up to have a closer look. "Oh… Something I'm working on with Tony, Shuri and Dr. Cho." He got up to join Bucky, his heart pounding as he could tell the man had figured out what he was looking at.
"Is that… Are these nerves and blood vessels?" Bucky asked and Jamie nodded, looking at the stuff that was swimming in a small tank before them.
"Yeah. I was trying to find a way to replicate lost limbs. These are the nerves and blood vessels for an arm." He pointed at another tank. "I had issues with the bones so Shuri helped out. These are made of nontoxic vibranium, just lighter like real bones. Dr. Cho gave me blue prints of her skin-replication machine. I rebuild it." He nodded at a machine behind Bucky. "Tony is funding this. I told him it's too much but he insisted. " Jamie shrugged. He watched Bucky, who stared at the artificial bones thoughtfully.
"Does it work?" he finally asked.
"I don't know… It's the prototype. This procedure only exists in my head and hasn't been tried before. IF, and it's a big if, it works we could continue working on this and maybe provide real looking prosthetics." Bucky nodded and still had his eyes on the bones. "Come sit and let me look at those plates. I want you off those painkillers." He waited for Bucky to sit down and looked at the messed up shoulder plate with a heavy sigh. "It's damaged real bad… We can probably reattach it but…"
"Would this work on me?" Bucky suddenly asked and looked at Jamie.
"Reattaching it? Yeah, I refuse to weld it to your skin though. What HYDRA did was barbaric."
"No, I mean…" Bucky nodded at the tank. "This. Would this work?"
Jamie looked at the tanks and shrugged. "I honestly don't know, Bucky… As I said…it only exists in my head."
"You're a genius though."
Jamie chuckled. "Yeah, but also a genius can be wrong…"
"Run me through the procedure. What would be necessary?" Bucky requested and looked at him expectantly.
"Alright…," Jamie gave in and thought about it. "In your case I'd scan your right arm, mirror it so that we've got a left arm. I'd manipulate the nerves, blood vessels, bones and muscles to fit a left arm. The problem in your case though is…" He used his A.I. to show a scan of Bucky's body and highlighted the areas. "They completely messed up your skeletal system. The metal arm is too heavy for your bones. See that area for example?" he pointed at the spot between spine and shoulder blade. "Your spine is compromising for the weight of the arm. Your muscles too. They replaced parts of your ribs and spine with metal. Your muscles all around your shoulder are artificial too, so is your shoulder. I'd have to replace all of that. Another issue is the artificial nerves they hooked up to your brain." He looked at Bucky who stared at his scan with a dark look in his eyes.
"I don't want another metal arm… I hate it. I never had a choice in this before," he said calmly and thoughtfully. "So… Let's say I'd volunteer for this procedure… Worst case?"
"No arm at all. Probably nerve damage or even brain damage. And…" Jamie nodded at Bucky's red scars that he was very self-conscious about. "Bucky, if this goes wrong or doesn't work…. I'll have to take the metal plate. All of it… The plate practically acts as your skin. If this doesn't work…"
"It'll look worse than it already does…," Bucky finished and Jamie nodded. "So I would not only have no arm but also no shoulder ?"
"Most likely," Jamie confirmed. "Or your brain gets damaged…"
Bucky nodded and his eyes looked back to the tanks, contemplating. Jamie was sure the topic was done and continued his examination of the plate as the man spoke up again. "I want you to try it…," he said and Jamie froze. "If it goes wrong Jake can jump back, warn us and that's it. But I want you to try this."
Jamie leant back with a sigh. "Talk to Lily about it first…"
"I don't have to. I know her answer already."
"Talk to her. Sleep on it. I'll have to plan this anyway. So I need time," Jamie begged and Bucky shrugged.
"Maybe talking to her won't be necessary anymore…," he muttered and Jamie frowned.
"Why? You guys having a fight? That would be a first."
"I don't know," Bucky shrugged and pulled on his shirt with one arm. "She's been weird lately. Maybe I shouldn't have asked her to marry me, maybe she's regretting it… Maybe she likes him more. I dunno…"
"Likes who more?" Jamie asked confused and crossed his arms.
"Him. Past me," Bucky muttered and bit his lower lip nervously. "I mean I'd get it… I'd pick him over a damaged version any time." He looked up when Jamie put his left hand on Bucky's right shoulder.
"Could you stop beating yourself up, please? If I know one thing then that my sister loves you very much. I have never seen her that happy. And…," Jamie contemplated on how to proceed without telling Bucky what was actually going on with his sister. He knew she hadn't told her fiancé yet. That was the only explanation he got. "…maybe she's got something else on her mind. I'd ask her and talk to her. She loves you, Bucky! Trust me on this."
Bucky held his gaze for a moment and lowered his in the end. "I'll try… Thanks."
"Anytime. And also talk to her about the procedure! I don't want her wrath to be focused on me. Sisters can be very scary!"
Bucky smiled sadly. "Yeah, they can be…" He nodded at Jamie once more before he headed back upstairs. As he entered the apartment he was surprised to find Peggy in it, currently talking to Lily.
"Oh, Sergeant Barnes. SHIELD sent over the dress uniforms for the hearing. I thought I bring it over real quick," Peggy said and Bucky frowned since the woman seemed to be unusually nervous.
"Alright. Thank you," Bucky said and looked to and fro between her and Lily. "Everything okay?"
"Yes, yes. Why shouldn't things be okay?" Peggy asked and pushed back her hair. "I'll be on my way," she said and nodded at Lily. "Thank you."
"You're welcome. Anytime," Lily smiled, dress uniform still in hand and watched her leaving. She looked at Bucky innocently as he was scrutinizing her. "Before you ask…I won't say anything." She put the uniform over the backrest of the armchair to her left.
"Not asking," Bucky said and bit his lip, looking at her nervously. "Doll… Can we talk?"
Lily suddenly seemed to tense up. "Sure…"
"Can we sit for this?" Bucky asked and she came over, looking nervous. He waited for her to sit down before he took all the courage he had. "Did I…do anything wrong?" he asked and Lily looked at him with startled big eyes. "I mean… You've been…distant…lately… Since you came back from that trip to the past actually… If you regret saying yes, I'd understand I just…."
"I'm pregnant!" Lily blurted out and now it was for Bucky to stare at her with big eyes and completely frozen in shock. "I… I still can't wrap my head around it so I was probably acting weird… It's… It's not you, Bucky. I swear. You're perfect," she quickly said and looked at him, noticing that he stared at her as if she had just grown a second head. Nervously, she ran a hand through her long hair and waited for him to say anything. "Bucky?"
"For real?" he muttered and watched how she left just to come back with something he realized was an ultrasound picture. His heart began to beat even faster as it already was when he took it with a shaking hand. Lily watched him staring at it, was unable to read him and was about to say something as he covered his face with one hand and simply sat there. She waited for another moment before she reached out to touch his shoulder and gasped as he pulled her on his lap in one swift move, then hid his face in the crook of her neck. It was then that she realized he was crying. So she hugged him back and just sat there for a while, still unsure if his reaction was good or bad as he suddenly kissed her deeply.
Lily searched his eyes after another kiss. "Okay?" she asked unsure but Bucky just kissed her once more and pulled her close again. Relieved she hugged him tight and couldn't help but sob into his neck too.
Neither heard how someone knocked on their door first and entered next. "Buck? BUCK?" Steve called excitedly and froze when he saw them so intimately, but frowned as they looked at him with red and puffy eyes. "Everything okay?!" he asked worriedly, his excitement forgotten.
Bucky wiped his eyes with his remaining hand before he held up the ultrasound picture. "We're pregnant again," he said, his voice thick with emotion. Smiling at Lily, he pulled her close and kissed her forehead. "Where's the fire, Rogers?" he finally asked.
"Oh, it's just…" Steve shrugged and Bucky was sure he saw his friend blushing after he had interrupted them. "We're pregnant too."
"No shit!" Bucky said surprised and looked at Lily, who shrugged with a smirk. So he finally knew why Peggy had been so weird before. "How far along is she?"
"8 weeks. You?" Steve asked and Bucky opened his mouth just to realize he had no idea.
"How far along are we?" he asked Lily, who bit her lip nervously.
"5…months…?"
"5," Bucky began in the direction of Steve and froze. "Months?!" he asked, looking at Lily again who nodded. "5 MONTHS?!"
"Yup…," she confirmed.
Steve frowned, opened his mouth, closed it again and rubbed the back of his neck. "Isn't Becca like…6 months…old?" he carefully asked.
"Yeah…," Bucky confirmed, eyes still staring at Lily.
"Is that even…possible?" Steve asked and crossed his arms. "I mean… I'm pretty sure I once read that you're supposed to wait 6 weeks after giving birth and…" He noticed two heads turning red. "Which you didn't, but…." He cleared his throat. "Is that even possible?!"
"Obviously…," Lily shrugged as something clicked in Bucky's head.
"The bathroom…. In January?" he muttered and looked at Lily for confirmation. She nodded. "Well, we…went a bit over the top that day… I think…" He cleared his throat and looked at Steve. "You were saying?"
Steve shook his head. "You think?" he asked and Bucky gave him the stink-eye. "Just wanted to let you know," he said in the end and smiled. "Congrats to you."
"To you too, Steve," Lily smiled and rested her head against Bucky's head.
Bucky wrapped his good arm around her waist and took a deep breath. "Could you sit down, Stevie? There's something I need to talk to both of you about," he said and waited for Steve, who looked at him worriedly, to do so before he proceeded to tell them about the procedure. As he had expected Steve was against it because of the risks. "Steve…"
"No, Bucky!" Steve disagreed and shook his head. "Brain damage? That's too risky! I mean I get that you don't want another metal arm, I do! But the risks are too great!" He looked at Lily, who was sitting next to Bucky and stroking her belly thoughtfully, sure that she would be on his side. "What do you think?"
Lily looked up and looked from Steve to Bucky and back. "I think it's for Bucky to decide," she said and before Steve could say something, "It's his arm and body, Steve. And I know he hates the metal arm because it reminds him of Hydra. So if he wants to try this…, I'll support him." She met Bucky's gaze and took his hand with a smile. "And as he said…if something goes wrong Jake can jump back and warn Jamie. If this works out, Steve…"
Steve sighed. "I know… I know," he said and looked down. "It's just…"
"I know, Steve," Bucky said and met his best friend's gaze. "But I wanna try this…"
Steve looked at him for a long time before he nodded. "Okay. I don't like it, but….okay." He sighed and his eyes took in the dress uniform. "Hearing's in two days… Did you talk to Jack yet?"
Bucky nodded. "After breakfast. He'll run it through with us again tomorrow," he muttered and looked at the uniform again. "Thought I didn't have to wear that damn thing ever again…"
Steve nodded. "Yeah me too… And it's not even OUR uniform but some modern version…"
Lily looked at Bucky when this one unconsciously tightened the hold on her hand and stared blankly ahead. "You okay?"
He tried to give her a smile. "Yeah…"
"You're terrified, Buck," Steve revealed and looked at him. "You heard Jack… If it's too much, you don't have to do it. I don't want you to suffer a flashback from your own trial."
"I'll be fine…," his friend said and smiled when Alpine jumped on his lap, purring. "Hey you…"
Lily smiled at their cat before her eyes caught something in a pocket of Bucky's dress uniform. "What's this?" she asked and Steve looked at what she was pointing at. He reached out to open a pocket and pulled out a folded envelope out of it. He frowned at the message on it.
"It's from Nat. She writes it was among your Hydra files," Steve said and handed Bucky the envelope which he reluctantly took. "Any idea what it might be?"
"No… Not sure I wanna know…," Bucky muttered and led Lily take the envelope.
Curiously she opened it and looked at what was inside. "Oh…," she made and both men looked at her frowning.
"What is it?" Bucky asked and she put whatever it was back before she handed him the envelope.
"You should look for yourself."
He took it from her, still confused, and pulled out what was hidden within. His jaw went slack as he recognized the objects. Not reacting to Steve's question what it was he went through the few pictures that he had constantly on him during the war and that had been in his breast pocket when he had fallen from the darn train. One was a family picture with his mother, father and sisters, the other of Rebecca, who was happily hanging on his arm and grinning into the camera, the third one of him and Steve and the last a group shot of the Howlies during the war. Wordlessly, he reached over the table and handed Steve the pictures, who went through them thoughtfully.
"I don't remember them…," Bucky muttered and looked at him with tears in his eyes, watching how Steve handed the pictures over to Lily, except for the family picture. "I only remember Becca…"
"Maggie and Josie were still very young when you shipped out," Steve said and pointed at the respective girls. "You had just turned 26, Becca was still 18. Maggie and Josie were barely 5. They were a surprised for your family." Steve smiled at the memory whereas Bucky was thoughtful. "Hey, Buck," he tried to change the subject, "what do you say we go and visit them tomorrow? I haven't been to see ma in ages."
"I don't know…"
"C'mon… Have you ever been to their graves?" Bucky shook his head. "Then let's go tomorrow. We can take the girls with us and go on a double date afterwards, clear your head before the court. You are terrified, I can see that so no isn't an option, pal."
Bucky sighed and rolled his eyes. "Fine. Whatever…"
So he found himself on the graveyard in Brooklyn on the next day, the air unusually hot for May, which he disliked because he was already self-conscious enough about his missing arm, but now that he was actually in a t-shirt only he felt eyes on him everywhere, which was probably the case. In the end, Steve and he got recognized almost everywhere… While Steve, Peggy on his arm, led the way to Sarah Rogers grave, Bucky walked after him, holding hands with Lily. From time to time he looked at the gravestones that they walked past and wondered if Steve's and his had actually been taken down by now. Steve stopped at the Rogers' family grave and he led Lily further down to the Barnes' family grave that Tony had located for him. As they reached the big marble stone he froze.
Meanwhile Steve stared at the headstone in confusion and gave Peggy a look before he looked back at the stone. "What the hell….," he said and made a step back. "Is that a fucking joke?!"
"Is it the right grave, darling?" Peggy asked.
"Yes!"
"Then there must be an explanation for this. We'll find out!" she tried to calm him down.
"Peggy, I've been to my mother's funeral. She was right here! Right next to this abusive shit of a father!" he raged and checked the surrounding stones frantically. "I swear on my mother's grave if someone's responsible for this I'll kill them myself!" Angrily, he stomped off and towards Bucky with Peggy following close by. He found his friend in front of the Barnes' grave, staring at the stone. Heaving a deep breath, Steve tried to calm down before he addressed Bucky, who had never been to his family's grave before and probably needed time to process it. "You okay?"
"No…," Bucky grumbled and nodded at the stone. "Didn't Pepper say they are buried here next to grandma and grandpa?"
"Yeah," Steve said and looked at the stone that only read two names.
Lily reached for Bucky's arm while Peggy stepped forward. "After both of you were presumed dead I went to see your family after the war. They were devastated. Is it possible they moved back to your hometown?"
"Shelbyville, Indiana?" Bucky asked.
"Yes. Maybe it's been too painful for them with both of you gone," she suggested and watched how Steve pulled out his phone, calling a number.
"Tony, it's me. I need you to check up on two things asap," he said. "Is there any mentioning of Bucky's parents in Shelbyville, Indiana after 1945 and I want to know what happened to my ma's grave and why her name isn't on the stone anymore! Yes, I'll wait." He met Bucky's gaze with a grim look on his own as his friend had looked up surprised.
"But she's been buried here. We were there! I even went to leave flowers before I shipped off," Bucky said and headed over to the stone, confused that the name wasn't on it. "This isn't right!"
"Yeah, I know!" Steve grunted and listened to what Tony had to tell him. "Thanks, Tony." He put the phone away. "Wanna hear something funny?"
"What is it?" Peggy asked.
Steve looked at Bucky intently. "There's no mentioning of Sarah Rogers' death on October 15 1936. And the Barnes' presumably disappeared after 1945."
"What the fuck?!" Bucky asked angrily. "Disappeared how?! Did Hydra get to them?!"
"I don't know."
"And your ma… I was there! We buried her! My folks were there!"
Steve nodded grimly. "I know."
Bucky ran his hand through his hair and shook his head. "Did Nat mention anything about my family in those Hydra files? Did they kill them?!" Steve shook his head. "People don't simply disappear, Steve!"
"I know, Buck!" Steve snapped back.
"Gentlemen, fighting won't solve this. Let's get back home and try to find out!" Peggy suggested and stepped between them, noticing Lily's shocked look. She frowned at her but when Lily noticed the look on her face became quickly neutral. Narrowing her eyes at her she smiled at Steve and Bucky. "How about you go ahead and cool off?" she said and gave Steve and Bucky a push, waiting for them to stomp off, still arguing about the incident. Peggy waited for them to be out of hearing reach before she grabbed Lily by the arm and stared her down. "You know something! Spill!"
Lily shook her head. "I've got an idea, but I'm not sure… I've got to check with one of my brothers first."
"What's the idea?" Peggy asked and let go of her arm.
Lily swallowed hard and looked at the gravestone of Bucky's family. "If things disappear from the past…or people disappear from the past…," she began and tried to find the right words. "It usually means they are not in the past anymore…"
Peggy frowned at her before her jaw went slack. "Oh… You mean…?"
"I'm not sure but that's the only explanation I got… I could ask Jake to check up on it."
Peggy nodded and looked ahead where Bucky and Steve were still in a heated argument. She sighed. "Well, let's better go and separate them before they start throwing punches."
Lily looked at her with wide eyes. "Did they do that during the war?"
"Oh, you have no idea!"
