Oscar's character short: more than a farm hand
(Location: Oscar's room Pine Farm Residence Anima continent Kingdom of Mistral Remnant)
The beautiful warm sun was shinning through the window of the teen's bedroom. The first rays hit his freckled face, a groan escape from his lips. How he hated waking up so early in the morning, even if he has was used to it by now. Of all his chores, this was the hardest thing to do. His body was weak and it screamed at him to resume getting more rest. He will agree, to stay in his warm bed and slept the entire day. But he knew he couldn't do that otherwise, his aunt will get upset. Worse, she will wake him up splashing cold water. The boy shivered remembering the last time he chose to slept in. Horrible feeling, his body frozen solid no thank you. So the young boy got up from his bed, doing a lot of stretching. He picked his towel as he left the room going to the bathroom to take a bath. Minutes later, he emerged going back and getting dressed. Shortly, he left wearing his usual farm attire.
"Oscar, breakfast ready!"
Right on time as he smiled. Aunt Flora will always get up a few hours early to prepare breakfast and start the house chores. Then, she will leave to sell vegetables in the nearest villages. Sometimes, she will go to Mistral and she will sell quite a lot most of the times. It is how they will make a living. They didn't had to worry about power since they didn't had electricity it's a farm in the middle of nowhere. It's been like for a very long time. Oscar has been living with his aunt since he was very young. So, he never knew his parents. According to his aunt they were hardworking farmers who wanted to open their own business selling all kinds of vegetables. Their dream never came true as both got attacked by Grimm. He was still an infant when it happened so Flora was the one to raised him as if he was her own son. And he was satisfied and happy with this life now that he was fourteen.
Yet, there was a part of him that wanted more. That it was craving for something he didn't understood. While his aunt was away he will be attending the farm, the crops, tending the animals, chopping wood. The life of a farmer just like his parents. It is also what his aunt wanted. She always tells him to become a great farmer and follow their footsteps. It makes him happy and at the same time, he felt something was missing. Climbing the stairs the delicious scent of food wasn't missed by his nose. Her food was the best part of the day, breakfast, lunch and dinner they were all amazing. His aunt is a professional at cooking. Though sometimes she will make things he wouldn't want to eat. Not a fan of broccoli, among other things. The rest was awesome and approved. The teen arrived at the kitchen seeing the his dish on the small wooden table. His mother was finishing things up.
Flora is a woman in her mid thirties with tan complexion, hazel eyes, black hair tied on a short pony tail. Wearing a mint green dress with white sandals, a sky blue apron over it. She resemblance him a lot, minus the freckles. She told him it was her sister, his mother the one who inherited the freckles in the family. And now, he's the one having them. In his opinion she's very attractive imagining why she never chose to be with someone and have any kids. Maybe, because she's always busy with work and keeping the house that she didn't had time for that. Plus, she already has her hands full with him. He got seated on the table, smiling and sniffing the delicious the dish before him. Omelet with cheese, bacon and ham just the way he likes it. Along with some toasts and butter. He cut part of the omelet putting it on the toast creating a sandwich, he will always do it and took a bite. It was heavenly, best omelet he has ever had.
"I notice there was something missing" started Flora while her nephew was still munching on the delicious omelet" you didn't watered the plants from the garden."
The farm boy almost chocked on his food" I...I tend to the plants at the greenhouse as usual."
"But you didn't watered the ones from the garden in the backyard."
"I'm sorry, I must have forgot. So many chores it's hard to keep all of them on mind."
"Didn't I tell you to always make a list of chores, so you don't forget?"
"Right. I forgot to do that too, sorry."
"Oh Oscar, what am I going to do with you? I swear, you're so hardworking but your memory tends to fail sometimes. After you're done with breakfast, you will make that list are we clear?"
"Yes ma'am!"
"I mean it, I will check you made it before I go. Now hurry up and finish up. It's another beautiful day."
He nodded finishing eating the exquisite omelet. His aunt can be strict sometimes but she's really a very good person. As he was almost done, he suddenly stopped looking in thought. There wasn't anything left on his dish, his head looked like it was somewhere else. It has to do with the last book he read last night. About a someone who needed to get strong because his people are in danger from an invasion of powerful monsters. Sounded cheesy but he like it. Asides from reading about history, geographic and other topics of books, he will also read fairy tales. Sometimes he will read them because of curiosity. It was nice to read something different every now and then. He needed to keep himself educated and well known about the world of Remnant. His aunt makes sure he knows everything there is to it. Yet, he still didn't know why he feels this way. Or maybe he does, and didn't know what to do.
"Oscar?"
The teen was snapped out of his thoughts gazing at his aunt who was washing the dishes. She got serious, then worry.
"You haven't finish your breakfast yet. Is everything all right?"
"Yeah, yeah I'm okay. Sorry" he finished the last piece of the omelet along with the toast.
"Get going. Those chores aren't going to be done by themselves" she took his plate about to wash it.
"On it" he got up when he stood in thought" I…."
"What is it?" her eyes were on the sink doing the washing.
"I just...Never mind, I'll be on my way."
"Oscar" now Flora's tone was soft" is there something on your mind?"
"Maybe."
"Go ahead and tell me. I won't let you go until you do."
He smiled giving up eventually" I love doing this. Helping you run the farm, I got used to the hard work. Do you see me as just a farmer?"
Flora was confused by his question. He has done such a great since he started. She taught him well.
"What I mean is, do you think I can be something else asides a farmer?"
"I'm still not following you."
"I don't know if I see myself doing this forever. I feel, like I want to do something more."
Oscar hoped he didn't upset her he knows how much this place means to her. He will always be grateful for raising and looking after him. The woman was a little confused as she finished washing the dishes.
"You just said you like this work. How come you don't see yourself becoming a farmer?"
"Do you think I can be something else, like a merchant, a police officer or a…." he wanted to say it, almost at the tip of his tongue.
"Oscar…."
"A Huntsman" he finally said it, the magic word.
"A Huntsman?" this took Flora by surprise" is that it?"
"Do you think I can become one?"
"I don't know. Why this all of the sudden?"
"I don't have what it takes, don't I?"
"I wouldn't say that, dear. But being a Huntsman is complicated. It's not something you can do from one day to another. Your father did unlocked your aura when you were a newborn. But you still have to learn to use it, and you need lots of training along with an education. You have to go to a training school, then a Huntsman school. It will take years. Also, it's not an easy job you constantly have to risk you life. You have to keep in mind that you might not make it. Fighting Grimm is not a job I support."
That's exactly what he was expecting, the kind of answer. At least he finally asked her.
"Do you really want to become a Huntsman?"
"I...It's just a thought, not like I mean it. You keep saying I'm a hard worker. Maybe I might have a chance."
"It's those books isn't it?"
"No. I, okay maybe. But I came to the decision myself. I know it's not an easy job. I only saw it as a possibility."
"Oscar, I only see you as a farmer like your parents. But it's up to you what you want to do with your life. I can't oblige you to remain a farmer. You just have to choose. That's the easy part, making it a reality is the hard part. For starter, you will have to leave and go to a proper school like Sanctum at Argus and if everything goes well, you may go to Haven in Mistral. You're still young, so think about it. You have plenty of time."
He nodded with a smile, she took it better than he thought. Honestly he was expecting she will get so angry, giving him one of her lectures. Yet, there was still one more thing he needed to ask her.
"Do you want me to become a Huntsman?"
The woman gave a sigh" I don't…."
He lowered his gaze.
"The world out there is a cruel one. Many towns and villages have been destroyed by Grimm in the past. Not just in Anima but in the other kingdoms as well. Look what happened to Kuroyuri."
Of course Flora found out since she usually goes to Mistral. Rumors spread like wildfire and she told him all about it. The village was attacked by Grimm ten years ago. According to the rumors, there were no survivors.
"That's different. Kuroyuri fell because they didn't had any Huntsman. I'm sure if there were they would have been able to fend off the Grimm and maybe-"
"Stop. I don't want to hear it anymore. You have chores to do and so do I."
The teen stood silent, he could tell she was upset. She didn't show it but her tone and her body language. This is why he was so worried of bringing the topic.
"I don't want you putting your life at risk every single day. Here, you don't have to. You have a normal life. Think about it. A life filled with danger or just a life?"
Oscar did his daily chores in deep thought. He didn't meant to upset his aunt. But he needed to know, he needed to tell her. Now, he knows it was a mistakes like he expected in the first place. The farm teen tends to the crops watered all of the plants, the greenhouse, the animals make sure they have food and water. He helped his aunt set up her carriage and the horse with the fresh vegetables. Her plans were to go to one of the near by villages to sell them. Flora was off waving at him as he did the same. He was feeling bad for asking her about becoming a Huntsman. It was more than something he reads from books, it was something he wanted to try out. This area was really isolated from other places, rarely any travelers would come. Mostly if will be merchants that have to take the long path to Mistral. It was dangerous since they can encounter Grimm.
They didn't had the luxury to use the train due to their goods. The trains are mainly use for civilians. His aunt words echoes in his head, everything he has to go through to be a Huntsman. She made it clear, she didn't wanted him to take such a bad path. Flora wasn't lying, being a Huntsman is a dangerous job. It's very life risking and he didn't minded giving it a try. Why such a desire to be someone he's not. Or maybe, he believe he can be someone strong and do the right thing for the sake of others. During his break he made some hot chocolate, he was never a fan of coffee along with cookies. He will have ten to fifteen minutes before resuming his work. His aunt won't return for a while but she's usually back before sun down. The farm teen enjoyed the sweet treats and the chocolate, just the way he likes it. He was wondering if she was still upset with him for bringing up the Huntsman topic.
Hours went by when he was almost finished. Two things he needed to is check the chicken's house. Probably, the most annoying part of his chores. Taking the eggs from their nest without causing a commotion. He did it quickly getting the hang of it, after doing it so many times. The last chore was to stack haystacks on the barn. They were heavy but he got used to the weight. It took him another hour to put them all in order. Just like always he had plenty of time to spare before the sun goes down. His aunt won't be returning for a few more hours. It worried him that she has to go alone. Anima can be dangerous with all kinds of Grimm prowling the grounds. But at least, this part was safe. It was a rare occasion such creature would come here. The teen walked over to the mirror with the sink, holding a pitchfork. A smile spread his features looking at himself.
"Are you talking to me?" he stroke a pose" never fear I will save you all, I am a Huntsman!"
And he played with the pitchfork spinning it as it was his weapon of choice. Though it wasn't the first time he will play make believe. Whenever he was done with the chores of the day, he will pretend he was a Huntsman saving imaginary people in dire help. Of course he will be careful enough, not to get himself cut with the farming tool. He will see the pitchfork as a trident not knowing what it can change into. He heard weapons from Huntsman will be two in one. Like a sword that changes into a gun. Oscar had no idea what will his imaginary weapon will be like. So, it will be just a normal trident. Swinging it in all directions like he was cutting down Grimm and he will remain victorious. It was fun acting around his age and so far his aunt hasn't caught him yet. So, he wanted to make sure it stays that way. The adventures of the Huntsman Oscar Pine must remain a secret.
"You're all safe as long as I'm here!"
The farm teen was completely spook when the animals started making a lot of noise. The horses, the cows, the pigs, the chickens he left the barn to see what was going on. It's like they were all going crazy, this has never happened before. He went to checked on all of them and he could see why they were acting like this. They were nervous no, they were scared but why. What could make them feel so afraid. Oscar calmed down as he went to search the whole farm. There was something doing this to them. People would never make them act like this, no matter if they're strangers. It's why he got such a bad feeling that will make him worried. As he run all over the place, he got nervous and eventually scared. Maybe he was getting more scare than the animals it was getting difficult to keep calm. So, he visited all the places and found nothing it was starting to get weird.
There has to be a source for their behavior and he needed to find out now. Because, they were causing too much noise it was hurting his ears. Reaching the end of the far, he eventually found out. He gasped as he was now scared beyond his mind. It was no wonder the animals were freaking out. There was a gorilla, a Grimm a Beringel. His body stood frozen in fear, it was the first time to be staring a Grimm in the face. The thing was big and strong and it wasn't happy. So many things were running on his head. Run, scream, stay, put up a tough front before this thing all he could do is tremble. The gorilla gave a ferocious growl, making the animals to panicked even more. And he was still holding the pitchfork, which he hasn't noticed because he was so scared. The teen stood still maybe it won't attack him if he doesn't make a move. He was wrong, it gave another roar charging at him.
And he ran, very logical thing to do. No training, no fighting experience and first time seeing a live Grimm. It should be expected he will ran as his life depended on it, because it does. One thing was clear, he needed to keep it far away from the farm from the animals. No harm can be done to them or his house also, no harm can be done to him either. The Beringel ran, it wasn't that fast until it jumped tackling the poor teen. Oscar immediately attempted to use pitch fork hitting it's chest, the white portion that was the armor didn't penetrate it. It's hands are so big, so much strength strong enough to crush his body. He kept stabbing it but it wasn't working as the creature threw away the farming tool from his hands. The boy got up running towards it as the gorilla jumped for another tackle. He was caught again but he was able to get the pitchfork back. He was scared, he didn't wanted to die.
"Oscar!"
Hazel eyes widened in horror. Gazing at the end of the road stood his aunt. She has returned sooner than anticipated. Flora has left the horse holding the carriage as she was shocked at the sight of her nephew on a Grimm. Just what was one doing all the way here. It will be very rare for the creatures to be in this area because they will most likely be in the center region of Anima. She immediately panicked, he was in danger impossible for him to beat such a creature.
"Aunt Flora get out of here!" he was still struggling with the Beringel.
"I am not leaving you!"
She quickly run to the farm, heading for the barn. What was she doing. The teen attempted a few stabs at the gorilla but failed, hitting the armor part. There has to be a way to pierce it's skin. The Beringel grabbed him, feeling it's large arms such strength. One squeeze, that's all it takes to be crush to death. The Grimm gave a scream of pain. Oscar gasped seeing that it was his aunt who has stabbed it. It's back with a pick, she actually did it.
"Let go of my nephew RIGHT NOW!"
The farm teen noticed she has brought more tools. Asides the pick, there was a shovel, a machete and a chainsaw. The last one will be very effective if he can get it on. The stab was enough for the gorilla to let go of the teen. It countered hitting Flora as she was sent to the ground. He shouted as he realized she has stabbed it in the black section. So the black part of a Grimm is the spot where they are vulnerable. Taking the chance that it was still in pain, it's guard was down. He stabbed the pitch fork on it's lower abdomen as it screamed again. It was moving all around. The farm hand went for the machete next, avoiding it's attacks. It was desperate so it should be easy to predict where they will land. The shovel was next, smacking the Grimm on the back of it's head. He used it a couple of times as it was now on the ground.
"Is it dead?"
"Aunt Flora!" he ran to the woman who was hurt" are you okay?!"
"What happened to the Grimm?" she opened her eyes.
"I killed it...I think."
This shocked the woman when she saw the gorilla stirring" it's still alive!"
Oscar turned to see that the Beringel was moving. Guess it needs a stronger stab to kill it. The only tool left was the chainsaw, without thinking the teen went to the cutting tool. Lucky it has fuel so he just needed to activate it. He pulled the cord, and keep pulling but it wasn't working. The Grimm was now on it's feet with the tools still on it's skin.
"Oscar what are you doing?! We have to go!"
"I can do this! I just need some time…." he was annoyed still pulling the cord.
"Oscar!"
The Beringel gave a roar running at the boy. The teen growled still pulling the cord, it wasn't working. The Grimm tacked him again as Flora screamed, she was hurt from getting hit by the creature so she was having a hard time getting up. Just in time, the last time he pulled it the chainsaw was finally on. The gorilla has given a painful scream as the chainsaw stabbed it, going through all the way from it's body. No blood as the creature fell to the ground. Shortly, its body has turned into black smoke until it was gone. Oscar stood shocked that he actually did it, turning off the chain saw. The rest of the farming tools fell to the ground. The teen was panting, his face covered in sweat. It felt like he has done his chores ten times in a row. '
"That was intense…."
"Oscar!"
The teen went to the woman as she immediately hugged him sobbing. She was worried sick holding him.
"I thought you were…."
"I'm okay but you're hurt. Let's go to the house so I can treat that wound."
She nodded" after, we should head to the cellar. Our negative emotions might bring back more."
That was the first time Oscar Pine encountered a Grimm, and the first he actually killed one. He was still under the adrenaline from the fight if he should call that a fight. The rush but most of all, how scared he was. This must be the feeling a Huntsman has every time is fighting. Erasing the thoughts he returned to the house carrying his aunt, to help her recover.
Oscar stood in his room as he has packed his things for his journey. So many months have passed since his encounter with the Beringel. So much has happened like having bad dreams and having someone in your head claiming he used to be the headmaster of Beacon Academy in Vale. Along that his soul and aura was merging with his own. At first, he thought it was a crazy dream and ignore it but then he realized it was real. The teen gave in as he packed his things and decided to leave for Mistral.
("I wish it wouldn't have come down to this.")
"No, you're right. I always wanted to make myself useful, not just on a farm but on helping people. Deep down, I wanted to be a Huntsman. I deny it for so long trying to believe I should be a farmer. But, that's not the case. Also it looks like you have a lot to do."
("We can take the train near your house to get to Mistral.")
"Yeah, one more thing before I go" Oscar took a piece of paper, getting seated on his desk taking a pen ready to write something.
Dear Aunt Flora:
By the time you read this, I would already be far away. I'm planning to go to Mistral as to why I, I have to find my calling. I have been wondering for so long what I want to do with my life. You said the life of a farmer is the one for me and I thought so, for a time. But all I want is to protect people and do some actual good. I know you're going to be upset. Heck I have never travel before but I have to do this. It's complicated and I can't explain it just know that I will do my best to stay safe. I'm sorry for leaving like this. Leaving you alone to look after the farm. I can't stop thinking about that Grimm I killed so long ago. If I train and get myself strong I will have a chance. I don't know when I will return, it's going to be a long trip. I will do my best to contact you, write you. Thank you for everything you have done for me. I love you.
-Sincerely
Oscar
The teen was done writing as he folded the note putting it on his bed. Right now his aunt was away and she will be return before sun down as usual.
("We should hurry.")
He nodded taking his backpack and leaving the room. Oscar closed the door knowing he won't be returning to his home for a long time.
End
-Here's the first character short. The first scene takes place way before the events of v4 and the second scene is during v4 when Oscar leaves his home.
-Killing a Beringel with a chainsaw I know it sounds crazy. But I think it's a more original death. I mean after getting stabbed by a pick, machete and pitchfork, then getting smacked a couple of times by a shovel. The chainsaw being the death blow.
-Coming up will be Ruby's character short which it might be shorter.
-I'm still planning to give Oscar more development when I get to v7.
-Replying to reviews:
*Shadow Joestar- thanks I hope you enjoy this character short and the coming ones.
*calderoneric758- interesting I might do that asides new outfits I want to give everyone a weapon upgrade thanks.
*TheEmeraldMage- thanks always happy for the constant support I promise I will make v7 better too. Also thanks for checking the character shorts too.
*Jamieoeyes- I will also be giving them weapon upgrades asides new outfits. Your idea is nice with the gravity dust thinking of Maria's dual scythes.
*TPoynt- okay I kinda understand but still I find it stupid writing. The fact he helped Tyrian is the reason Clover was killed. So it's his fault I feel bad for Qrow he might go back to drink again.
*stephanieeiche10- well if you're thinking about the character shorts I think in a couple of weeks since they will be short chapters. Oscar's short is only 4k+ words the others might be around the same or less.
*Sweetdesire2002- it's something I've been wanting to do for a long time. Just to give more character development but it will fit with the story. As for your other review it's Innominat the hooded figure's identity won't be reveal for a while. From the way things are going with v7, maybe by v8.
*CT7567Rules- Ironwood is doing the right thing I think RWBY screwed up with not telling him the truth about Salem and Robin from the start.
-SPOILERS for volume 7 episode 13 titled" The enemy of trust" and the season finale I have said it before that this volume has been one big filler and it is. I wouldn't have a problem with it. Because it will all lead to the big battle in the next volume the problem, it was done so mediocre. The episode was meh. Neo takes the relic of Knowledge from Oscar making me think how the hell he got to punched her in the first place with the way she fought Jaune, Ren and Nora. Penny becomes the Winter Maiden and I'm guessing a robot can become one is because she has aura otherwise I see no logical explanation, Cinder escapes taking the lamp from Neo's hands, everyone escapes on a ship, Qrow and Robin are arrested and Oscar get shot by Ironwood falling from the Vault and he used his aura to save himself and Ozpin. And of course the ending, Salem arriving. Nobody died, which it's okay with me but the way the episode was handled, it was an anticlimax. I feel like I was watching the end of v6 all over again. The writing has been bad, some fights were good, others were bad, the ship teasing was annoying as hell and lastly we NEVER got to see Nora's background story when her VA confirmed it months before the volume's release. I think Samantha Ireland screw up because keep in mind they were already done making v7 by the time of that interview so she and EVERYONE from the VA's to CRWBY knew exactly how the volume was going to go. At least Watts is alive and in prison not for long pretty sure Tyrian will help him escape. I have a feeling Salem is going to kill Cinder and make Neo the new Fall Maiden. She has every reason to do it. First, she failed to take the Spring Maiden's powers along with the lamp at Haven, and she also failed to take the powers of the Winter Maiden. And second, all this time she has let her emotions get the best of her simply because deep down she fears Salem and she knows exactly what will happen to her if she fails. I think she has already sealed her fate and please let me be right. I am sick of Cinder she shouldn't even be alive at this point in the story.
Continuation I also want to bring up Winter wanting to stop her sister and the others from leaving. Due that she was wounded from fighting Cinder she gave them the choice to leave before calling for backup. If she was in top shape, would she had really fought Weiss? And Qrow and Robin, the way it ended as they got arrested makes me think that there's going to be something between them. Clover's death hit him hard and Robin will most likely blame herself allowing for the characters to bond and get closer. Now, don't get me wrong I will always ship Qrow/Winter but Qrow/Robin isn't bad either. The best way to rate this volume is a 6/10 and I won't say it was worse than v6 it's just filler done bad. I really can't explain it I stop caring a long time ago and I won't lift my hopes up that v8 will be better. I'm not hype for the next volume at all. Usually I would be smashing my head on a wall because I have to wait until Fall for the next volume but not this time. Okay, I'll wait no problem it's not like Sword Art Online or Kimetsu no Yaiba. Shows that I'm really dying of anticipation to see with new episodes. I'm only watching the show for the sake of my stories specially the Journey to Redemption. Maybe I'm asking too much or being too critical it's not the same without Monty Oum.
-As always thank you very much for the favs, follows and reviews I really appreciate it.
Next time: Ruby's character short" special"
