Chapter 79:
Derek feels a sudden weight on his hip as he lays in bed as he sleeps. As he lays on his side it feels awkward and he tries to pull Meredith closer as they sleep, thinking it was just a dream. He buries his nose into Meredith's neck, the smell of lavender invading his senses as he tries to lull himself into a deeper sleep. The weight on his hip begins to shake and he moans into Meredith's neck. "Daddy." He hears as the weight jams something into his back as they move. "Wake upy!"
"Zola." He groans.
"It's bike ridin' day!" She squeals and shakes Derek's arm.
"Not until tonight." Derek grumbles.
"Daddy, wake up!" Zola ignores his comments. Derek sighs and blinks open his eyes. Letting go of Meredith, he grabs onto Zola as he turns to lay on his back. She is now straddling his waist. As Derek looks at his five year old, he sees Zola wearing her princess bike helmet and her matching protective knee and elbow pads over her pajama pants and shirt. Now understanding the jab in his back.
"Good morning, Princess."
"Thank you, daddy!" She smiles sweetly. "We finally get to learn to ride bikes!" They had been home for three weeks but, they hadn't had a day off yet and everyday there was some sort of trauma. Then, Meredith and Derek each had to take an all night on call shift due to being out for three weeks. Each time, their "on call" status changed due to an intern or resident needing them.
"I know, but after work. Mama and I both get off at three and we will practice while mama plays with Bailey and Lexie.
"But I'm just so excited!" Zola bounces. Her face brightens with a huge smile, so adorable that it makes being up at 5:45 a little better.
Derek sighs before smiling at his daughter. "Me too." He adds as he looks over at the clock. It was almost time to wake up anyway.
"Come on, Zo. Let's get breakfast started." He sighs as he rolls out of bed.
"Okay!"
"Shh, don't wake mama." He says sleepily as she squeals loudly.
"Okay, daddy." Zola shrugs as they walk to the kitchen. Derek pulls out the eggs and bacon and starts to cook them. As he cooks, Zola begins chatting about learning to ride her bike and her birthday on Saturday.
"Morning." Meredith mumbles twenty minutes later. She wraps her arms around Derek's waist from behind.
"Hey, you." He hums, dropping his spatula as he turns to hug Meredith. "Do you feel better?" Meredith had felt extra tired the night before and her back was a bit sore. She went to bed early while Derek handled the kids.
"Yeah, just a little nauseous." She buries her face in his chest as he looks at her in concern.
"You don't feel warm." Derek murmurs as he kisses her forehead.
"I feel like it's a stomach bug." Meredith mutters as he rubs her back with her head deep in his chest.
"Oh, Mer. Just promise me you will stop if you get too tired.
"Okay, Derek." She rolls her eyes since Derek can't see her eyes. Or so she thinks.
"Don't roll your eyes at me." Derek laughs as Meredith gasps up at him. "I love you and I'd rather not hear from Hunt that you collapsed in the O.R."
"I know, Der." She giggles and then gasps as he leans to kiss her. "Der!"
"What?" He says as he continues to kiss her.
"I don't want you getting sick!"
"Don't care. I can't resist the love of my life." He murmurs making Zola giggle as he pulls her hips to his and grinds against them. His hands go up and rub against her nipples. Meredith gasps as soreness ripples through her. She brushes it off as a gasp of surprise before moving to kiss Zola as Derek turns back to finish cooking.
"Dada! Dada!" They hear Lexie babble through the monitor.
"Hmm, an angel is calling." Derek laughs as he sets Meredith's plate in front of her.
She looks at the eggs carefully. She usually loves Derek's eggs, but just the thought of taking one bite of eggs makes her cringe slightly. "Here, ZoZo." She whispers and scoops them onto her daughter's plate.
"Here she is!" Derek comes in holding Lexie who is curled around him, her stuffed penguin tight in her arm. "Look who else I found." Derek looks down as he leads a very sleepy Bailey besides him. The little boy was rubbing his eyes with one hand as he leaned against Derek's legs.
"Morning, guys!" Meredith squeals as she opens her arms. Bailey walks in a catatonic state into her arms. "You're tired, huh?" She asks as she strokes his hair while he lays his head down.
"Hmm, he took the longest to go to sleep." Derek smirks as he gives Lexie her plate and then scoops some onto a Mickey Mouse plate for Bailey.
"I see, bud." Meredith laughs.
"Mama! Daddy is gonna teach me how to ride my bike today!" Zola pipes.
"Is that right?"
"Yeah! I'm gonna go so fast! But, daddy can't let go uhtil I say it's okay! Sarah at school says I'm so lucky that I got a bike for Christmas."
"Well, you were a very good girl, Zo." Derek laughs.
"I'm sure Sarah got something very special too." Meredith adds as she prompts Bailey to eat.
"Sofia got a bike too." Zola adds. "You should teach her how to ride too, daddy. Because she doesn't got a daddy."
Derek looks at Meredith with wide eyes. "I… I will talk to Aunt Callie." He says softly.
"Mark would love that, Derek." Meredith rubs his back with a smile.
"Mark would love to be able to teach his daughter." Derek sighs. "But, it would mean something to him for me to do it since he can't." He smiles at Meredith.
"He would. But, Uncle Derek is just as cool." Meredith giggles.
"I will if Callie is okay with that." Derek says as they finish breakfast. "Come on, guys." He says a few minutes later as they go get dressed. The whole time they get dressed and during the whole ride to school, Zola talks non stop about her bike.
"Daddy, I wanna go fast, fast!" She says first as Meredith hands her a shirt while Derek dresses Lexie next to them.
"My favorite part of my bike is the basket!" She says later, in between brushing her teeth after getting dressed. "Mama, daddy says I have to use my feet to push the pedals. Right, daddy?" She mentions in the car later.
"Yes, ZoZo." Derek laughs as they drive off of the ferry. Zola kicks her feet at she looks out the window. She hums to herself in excitement.
"She's so excited." Meredith giggles before stifling a yawn, moving her hand from Derek's warm grasp. She closes her eyes to give them a moments rest.
"She is! Mer, are you sure you're okay to work?" Derek asks as he looks over at her, concerned and grabs her hand.
"I am, Derek." Meredith smiles up at him.
"Okay." He nods, deciding to leave it alone for now.
"School!" Zola cheers as they approach the car line.
"Have a good day, love bug." Meredith coos as Zola unbuckles and kisses her parents.
"'Kay, mama." She smiles as she puts on her bag and jumps out.
"We will be back here soon and it will be time for bikes, okay?" Derek beams, a feeling of pride that he finally gets this running through him. Zola nods and waves before shutting the door and running to the kindergarten entrance. They continue to head to the hospital while discussing their schedules. Derek hoping that all goes as planned since he is as excited as his daughter to teach her how to ride a bike.
After two surgeries, a quickie in the supply closet, lunch, two traumas and three consults, Meredith was ready to go home. "Why am I so tired?" Meredith moans as she changes.
"You're used to relaxing? After three weeks of it, your body has gotten used to it." Amy suggests as she eats a granola bar in the attendings lounge.
"We have been home for three weeks." Meredith mutters as Derek walks inside. "Hey!" She beams as she sinks into his arms, laying her head on his chest. Feeling more awake at the sight of her husband.
"Hey. I haven't seen you in hours." Derek hugs her close. One hand on the back of her head, the other on her lower back. He kisses her head over and over. She lifts up her head to smirk at him.
"Hmm, yeah. When I rode you…"
"MER!" Derek gasps, stopping her. "Amy… Right… There." His eyes wide.
"Hmm, sorry, Amy." Meredith groans.
"Used to it." Amy laughs as she walks out.
"How do you feel?" Derek hums as he checks her over.
Meredith sighs. "Better now that you're here. Still tired, but I could do another quickie." She giggles and Derek swears he feels his pants become tighter at the sound.
"Oh, trust me. I would be happy to oblige, but we are already late to pick up our very excited daughter." Derek moans as he rubs her back. "Tonight?"
"I would love that!" Meredith coos.
"It's a plan, then." Derek says before moving to change. Once they are all changed, they head to pick up Lexie and Bailey.
"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" Zola cheers as they all finally walk inside the office to get her an hour later. As they were a bit later in getting out, they missed the car line pick up. Zola has a huge grin as she jumps up and down.
"Sorry, we had a late trauma." Derek explains to the office staff before bending down to pick up Zola.
"Daddy, we learn how to ride bikes now?" She bounces.
"That's all she talked about today." Her teacher, who had been waiting, tells them.
"She is very excited." Meredith giggles as runs her fingers in Zola's coarse hair.
"DA-DDY!" Zola gasps, trying to get his attention back.
"Yes, Zo. I know you're excited, but please say hi to mama and your brother and sister." Derek says with a chuckle.
"Oops, sorry. Hi, mama, hi, Bailey, hi, Lex." Zola giggles.
"Hi, love bug." Meredith kisses her cheek. "Let's go bike riding!" She finishes as they say goodbye to the teacher. Derek buckles Zola and Bailey in the car while Lexie is buckled by Meredith.
"When is it my turn to try my bike?" Bailey asks as they drive.
"Thursday, buddy." Derek says as he looks in the mirror.
"That's forever!" Bailey moans.
"That's just two sleeps." Meredith coaxes.
"But I wanna learn too!"
"I know, buddy. You will, but first it's Zola's turn."
"Okay, daddy." Bailey sighs.
"Hey! How about you pick out dinner!" Derek bargains.
"Me?!" Bailey's face lights up with excitement.
"Yes, buddy." Derek laughs and looks over at Meredith who was blinking sleepily.
"Okay!" He taps his finger to his chin. His blue eyes darting all over. Pondering the choices. "I know! I know! I want grilled cheese and french fries!"
"Perfect, buddy. We will make some after ZoZo and I practice riding her bike."
"Yay!" Bailey cheers just as Derek pulls up their long driveway.
"Okay, come on Zola. Let's go change and get your bike." Derek says as he lets her out. He turns to Meredith who had walked around with Lexie after Bailey ran after his sister. He wraps an arm around her and brushes some hair away from her eyes. "You okay, Mer?" Derek says, unable to resist pressing his lips to hers.
"I'm okay, Der." She coos, brushing a leaf off of Derek's coat. "Little tired, but okay."
Derek sighs and looks at her with worry. "Okay. If you feel worse, please get me."
"I will, Der. I'm just going to go inside and have a snack with Bails and Lex." She coos at the baby in her arms.
"Mama!" Lexie claps her hands and buries her face in Meredith's neck.
"Sounds good." Derek says as they walk inside.
"I'm ready, daddy!" Zola exclaims as they see her standing in the foyer. She's wearing her pink sweatpants and a light pink sweater. Her helmet and elbow and knee pads clutched in her hand.
"You are." Derek smirks. "Come on, let's get your coat and then your bike." He grabs her purple zip jacket with the fuzzy inside. Zola puts it on before running outside.
"Have fun." Meredith waves in the doorway as Derek turns to follow Zola. She shuts the door and turns to Bailey. They decide to watch Paw Patrol as they have a snack.
Outside, Derek is helping Zola with her knee pads, elbow pads and helmet. He smiles as he secures her helmet. Zola has a wide grin on her lips. "Remember, Zo, it's okay if you fall. I'm here and you have protection." Derek says as he holds her cheeks.
"Ya, daddy."
"Alright, princess. Let's ride!" Derek pulls the bike that was waiting for her on Christmas morning over to them. Zola covers her open mouth as she wriggles in excitement. She grabs the handles and looks back at Derek.
"Okay!" She says as she steps over the bar of the bike.
"Put one foot on the pedal and push up. I got you." Derek holds the seat with one hand and the middle of the handlebar with the other.
"Woah!" Zola gasps as she shakes on the bike. "Daddy. Don't let go. Please, don't."
"I won't, Zola. Not until you tell me." Derek says softly as he strengthens his hold on her bike. Zola squeezes her handlebars and nods. "Okay, Zo. You got this, start pedaling." He sounds proud, confident and encouraging as he coaxes his daughter.
"Okay!" Zola takes a deep breath. "One, two, three!" She counts and starts pedaling with Derek keeping her steady. "Woah!" She gasps as they move down the path.
"You're doing it, Zo!" Derek laughs. "Good job, ZoZo!" He smiles as he tries to keep up with how fast she's trying to move.
"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" She laughs as she keeps going. "Wee!" She cheers.
"You can do it, Zo!" He laughs as he runs behind her as he holds onto her.
"Let go, daddy!" Zola says definitively a little further down.
Derek gasps back a sob as he hears this. "You sure?"
"Yes, daddy!" Zola squeals.
"Ohh… Kay." Derek says nervously. He breathes in and out as Zola giggles hysterically. "On the count of three. One…two…three!" Derek shouts as his eyes tear while he lets go of her bike.
"Woah! Woah!" Zola says as she shakes a bit while pedaling cautiously.
"You're doing it, Zo!" Derek chokes as he watches his baby girl ride her first bike on her own. No training wheels.
"I did it!" Zola cheers as she rides up to Derek. He stops the bike and lifts Zola into his arms immediately.
"You did, princess!" Derek laughs as he tosses her up in the air. "I'm so very proud of you!" He hugs her tight, kissing her cheeks. "I love you."
"I love you, too! That was so much fun, daddy. Can I show mama?" Asks Zola.
"Sure, love bug. Let's go get her." He carries Zola up to the door. His face distorts into confusion when he opens the door.
"Bailey?" He asks when he sees his son facing the couch, poking something. Lexie was playing with some plastic cookies close to her brother.
"Mama fell asleep." Bailey says as he looks up at Derek.
Derek immediately puts Zola on the ground and runs over to the couch. "Meredith?" He coos and rubs her back. Feeling her head, he is surprised that she doesn't have a temperature. "Mer?" His stomach rolls with worry. Numerous scenarios running through his head like wildfire.
"Wha…?" Meredith mumbles sleepily. "Huh? Derek?" She rubs her eyes sleepily. "Crap!" She shouts suddenly. "Oh no! Oh no!" Meredith freaks out and sits up in panic.
"Mer… Mer… It's okay. Shhh…" Derek hums as he pulls her to him.
"It's not okay, Derek! I fell asleep!" Meredith gasps.
"Mer, I don't think you were asleep long. Even if you were, Bailey could have woken you up or gotten me. He was trying to wake you, but I don't think you could feel his poking." Derek laughs and pulls her close.
"Bailey, was I asleep long?" Meredith rubs her eyes.
"No, mama. You watched two Paw Patrols. When I was done singing the names of the puppies for the number three one… You was sleeping." Bailey giggles.
"See Mer. I can even see that this is the beginning of the episode."
"Still Der." Meredith collapses into his chest and he immediately hugs her tight.
"It's okay, Meredith. It happens." Derek laughs and lifts her chin so that he could kiss her. "I love you."
"I love you, too." Meredith hums.
"There you go." Derek nuzzles her cheek, kissing her neck. "Now." He sighs as he holds her shoulders and looks at her. "Are you sure you feel okay?"
"Yes, Derek. I'm just tired." Meredith smiles.
"Hmm." Derek feels her head. "No fever. Do you have a headache? Dizziness?" His voice laced with concern.
"No and no." Meredith giggles.
"How's your stomach? Any pain? Nausea?"
"No." She says again.
"Double vision?" Again she shakes her head. "Let me just check…" Derek hums as he takes his fingers and checks her range of vision for signs of a tumor. He checks her lymph nodes and then sighs in content. "How's your back?"
"A little sore, but I did just sleep on the couch." Meredith laughs.
"Okay, let's go watch Zola ride her bike and then you take a nap while I make dinner." Derek caresses her cheeks softly.
"You rode your bike, Zo?!" Meredith gasps with pride, turning to look at her daughter.
"Yeah! All by myself!" Zola jumps.
"Oh, baby, that's wonderful!" Meredith cheers. "Let's go see!" Her tiredness forgotten momentarily.
"Come on, mama!" Zola squeals as she tugs on her hand. Derek helps Meredith up before lifting Lexie. Bailey following along behind them.
"Want me to help get you on the bike?" Derek questions. Zola nods as she looks over at Derek. "Okay, I will hold you until you start peddling."
"Okay, daddy." Zola nods while holding up her bike. Derek puts Lexie on the ground with her stuffed frog she had carried out with her. He walks over and Zola smiles as he steadies her bike so that she can get on the seat. "Ya watching, mama?!"
"I am, Zo!" Meredith giggles with her arms around Bailey as they watch from the bottom step. Her eyes shine as she watches Derek kiss Zola's head as the girl steadies herself.
"Hi, Bailey! Hi, mama!" She waves from her bike.
"Zola!" Bailey laughs and leans back into Meredith.
"Okay, ZoZo. Ride to mama." Derek coos. "One, two, three!" He calls as Zola pushes her pedals.
"Wee! Wee!" Zola giggles as she rides along the path.
"Oh! My Zola!" Meredith tears as she watches her daughter come closer. "Good girl!"
"Look at me!" Zola laughs as she rides around and around. "Catch me, mama!" Derek watches with a wide, proud smile as Meredith steps down and laughs as she bends to grab Zola's handle bars.
"ZoZo!" Meredith coos as she helps her step off of her bike and pulls her into a tight hug. "I am so proud of you!" She cradles Zola's head into her stomach and sways back and forth.
"That was so fun!" Zola says as she looks back up at Meredith.
"It looks like you had fun." Answers Meredith.
"She sure did great. Now it's time to go inside and celebrate with grilled cheese and french fries." Derek smiles as he rubs Meredith's lower back.
"Yay!" Bailey and Zola cheer and run inside.
"Hmm, you did great, Derek." Meredith coos once they are gone. Derek lifts Lexie and turns to smile at her.
"It was better than I ever imagined."
"It made her day, Der." Meredith leans up and kisses him.
"My pleasure." He moans against her lips. "Now, go on inside and take a nap while I make dinner."
Before she can answer, her stomach gives a loud rumble. "Ugh, I'm starving. I can't sleep." Meredith moans.
"Do you feel like wanting to sleep?"
"Yes. But, I can't because my stomach won't let me until I eat."
"Oh, Mer." Derek strokes her hair and kisses her head. "Sit with us while we cook. I'll throw the fries in the air fryer to make them quick." He adds as he leads her into the kitchen where the kids were waiting. Meredith does just that and watches them with tired eyes until Derek places her food in front of her. "I'll get the kids to bed tonight." He whispers.
"But, Der." She moans in shock.
"It's okay, Mer. Save your energy for… You know!" Derek smirks wickedly.
"Sure." Meredith rolls her eyes. "Don't want to be too tired for that." She smirks playfully.
"Grr…" Derek growls as he walks around the counter and wraps his arms around her from behind. He presses his chest against her back and breathes hot air onto her neck. "You're irresistible. What can I say?" He murmurs into her ear as she lifts her sandwich to her mouth. Derek watches her as she slowly chews her food. They maintain a look of lust as Derek moves around to serve the kids and himself. Both of them picturing the other naked. When they are done, Derek whisks the kids off to bath and bed. Meredith goes and changes into some pajama bottoms and a tank. As she comes out of the bathroom, Derek and the kids come running inside.
"Night, mama!" Bailey coos in his navy fire truck pajamas.
"Night, mama!" Zola adds in her pink and yellow pajamas with rainbows all over.
"Good night, guys." She hugs and kisses her oldest two over and over. "I'm so proud of you." Meredith whispers to Zola. She then hugs and Lexie with is all warm and cuddly in her penguin pajamas. Giving her hugs, kisses and multiple tickles.
"You feeling okay?" Derek checks, rubbing her soft cheek.
Meredith gazes in awe at Derek. "Yes, Der. I will be waiting." She raises her eyebrows and turns to the bed.
Derek's eyes roam her body making him lick his lips in anticipation. "Let's go, kids." He says as Meredith laughs. Once they are gone, Meredith goes to lay in bed. Derek hurries the bedtime routine and when Lexie is finally asleep he practically runs down the hall. "Mer?" He hums as he opens the door. When his eyes reach his wife, his heart squeezes. "Oh, Mer." He hums as he sees Meredith cuddling his pillow, fast asleep. "Mer." He whispers as he walks over and strokes her hair. Kissing her head before moving to change for bed. He smiles as he gets under the covers and notices that she doesn't budge while he pulls her close and turns off the light. "I love you, Mer. Please be okay." He whispers before drifting off to sleep.

The next morning Derek feels a weight on his waist again. He moans sleepily and tries to move his arms. His brain wakes more as he feels his wrists pinned to the mattress. A melodic giggle fills the air as he feels the weight move to lay across his body. He feels hot breath on his neck and his eyes flutter open as his wife begins trailing her tongue down his neck. "Der…" Meredith moans as she begins grinding hard against his crotch.
"Mer?" Derek asks confused as his eyes open fully. His mouth forms a huge smile.
"I need you, Derek." Meredith whines. Derek gasps as he sees her fully naked body before him as she sits up.
"Yeah?" He moans as his cock twitches inside of his pants.
"Mm hmm… I feel rested. Better." She takes his hand and places it on her breast.
"Good! Oh!" He coos as he rolls her breast and alternates squeezing it. Meredith gasps as she places her hand over his to encourage more.
"Yes! Yes!" She whimpers as her other hand fumbles for the lining of his pants. With one hand she pushes down his pants while the other keeps massaging her boobs with his hand.
"Meredith!" Derek shouts as she immediately sinks onto him and begins riding him hard.
"Need you, Der! Oh, oh, oh!" Meredith moans as she goes faster. "Ah! Yes!" She gasps as she immediately crashes, bringing Derek with her.
They pant as Meredith grips his shoulders and lays her forehead on his. Derek's hands roam her body before cupping her cheeks and kissing her lips. "You're feeling better."
"I am." Meredith giggles. "Sorry for passing out last night."
"Hmm, not your fault. I want you to feel good. It kills me when you don't feel well, Mer." He brushes some hair behind her ears.
"I know. I'm the same with you." She says as she lays on his chest.
"It did lead to my favorite way to wake up, though." Derek smirks.
"Hmm, me naked and pinning you down?"
"Yes." Derek moans huskily, kissing her again.
"Noted." Meredith giggles and kisses his chin.
"Are you okay to work, today? I know you have that tumor removal." Concern fills Derek's blue eyes.
"I am, Der. I'm not as tired at least, I'm not nauseous and my back isn't sore." Meredith smiles happily.
"Good! But, promise me, Mer. If it happens again, stop what you're doing and call me so that we can get it checked." Derek looks so sad as he asks this that Meredith's heart breaks.
"Yes, Derek. Of course." She moves to kiss his lips in reassurance.
"Good." He breathes in relief. "Let's get up, I'll make oatmeal just in case you decide to feel nauseous again."
"Hey! I did not choose to get nauseous!" Meredith laughs as they get out of bed.
"Hmm." Derek shrugs with a sly smirk telling her that he was teasing.
"Ugh!" Meredith swats at him. "I'm gonna get the kids. You get started on that breakfast that I may choose not to eat!" She plays back, making Derek laugh.
"Whatever, Dr. Grey." Derek says as he goes to get started. They had to hurry this morning as both of them had early surgeries. After dropping the kids off after a fast paced morning, they head to the Neuro floor to meet their patients.
"Good luck, Derek." Meredith waves as she starts to head to room 6215.
"You too, Mer." Derek pulls her back in for a kiss before going his way.
Meredith goes to see her patient still on cloud nine from Derek's kiss. She makes sure everything is prepped and goes to scrub. After her surgery, Meredith headed to the cafeteria, she's surprised that she is not really hungry, but feels like she needs to eat something. After browsing the unappealing choices, she selects a bowl of chicken soup, a muffin and an apple. Looking around, Meredith finally spots Cristina sitting at a far table. "Hey!" She mutters as she drops her tray.
"Hey yourself." Cristina smiles softly.
"This sucks, I want to eat but nothing appeals to me. I feel nauseous. I'm exhausted even though I slept like a billion hours." Meredith moans.
"Well, having sex all night probably isn't helping." Cristina jokes.
"We're not! We had sex literally all night on New Years Eve and I wasn't even this exhausted." Meredith bites into her muffin half heartedly.
"Woah!" Cristina says with raised eyebrows.
"It's these last four days, I've even gone to sleep before the kids. We have had sex, this morning and yesterday we had a quickie. It was just five days ago that the tiredness started. That was the night Derek and I spent three hours doing the thing he loves in the shower where…"
"Meredith!" Cristina gasps, cutting her off. "I get it, these last few days have been tough. I don't need to hear details." Cristina laughs.
"Sorry." Meredith giggles. "How's shadowing going?"
"Ugh! Fine. McQueen has me scrubbing in soon. It would be better if my ovaries weren't recking havoc on my body this month."
"Oh, I know! When I…" Meredith feels the breath leave her chest. "Cristina…" She whispers.
"What, Mer?" She watches the color drain from Meredith's face. "Why are you so white?" Cristina looks at her funny.
"Page Derek. Page Derek, now!" Her voice is high and strained.
"Oh-kay…" Cristina looks at her like she was crazy. As she reaches for her pager, Meredith pulls out her phone.
"One…two…three…" Meredith counts on her calendar. "Crap, but no, not crap. Oh! Oh! I was supposed…" She stares at the calendar on her phone and covers her mouth.
"Derek's on his way." Cristina says as she watches Meredith carefully. "How late are you?" Meredith doesn't answer, just keeps staring at her phone. "Mer?"
"Derek." Is all that Meredith says.
"Okay, Mer. He's coming." Cristina scoots closer and rubs her back. Resting her head on Meredith's.
"Cristina? What's wrong?!" Derek asks as he comes running into the cafeteria several minutes later. He looks between Cristina and Meredith, terrified as he tries to catch his breath.
"No idea, she realized something and then became catatonic." Cristina says in concern while rubbing her friends back. "Mer? Derek's here and I'm gonna leave you guys alone."
"Thanks." Meredith mutters as Cristina smiles sympathetically. "Derek!" She moans and stands, collapsing into his chest as his arms engulf her.
"Mer? What's wrong? Are you hurt? Are the kids okay?" Derek cups her cheeks and looks her over carefully. Meredith just stares at him, not saying a word. She grips his waist and bites her lips. "You're scaring me, Mer." Derek says nervously. "Talk to me."
"Uhh…" Meredith moans and pulls Derek towards the doors.
"Mer, where are we going?" Derek wonders as Meredith pulls him down the crowded hospital. She flings open an exam room and goes inside when she notices it was empty. "Oh, Mer, if you wanted to relive prom, why didn't you just say so?" He smirks with a naughty glint in his eye.
"Derek!" She yells and covers her face. Derek smirks and she grabs some gauze to throw at him. Taking a deep breath she begins to speak. "I'm late." She says staring at Derek intently. Derek's eyes widen in complete shock. His mouth drops for a second before morphing into a wide smile. There are tears in his eyes that are so beautiful that it makes Meredith giggle and forget any worries.
"Meredith." He says reverently and rushes over to pull her into a big kiss. Stroking her cheeks, he looks at her in awe. "How late?"
"I was supposed to be done with my period about four weeks ago or so." Meredith says softly.
"I'm going to page Robbins. We have to find out." Derek says, almost bouncing.
"Careful, Derek. I don't want the hospital knowing."
"They won't, Mer." Derek reaches for his phone.
"I mean, maybe I'm not? But, then again, I have been crazy tired and nauseous. My nipples hurt and it's hard to nurse Lexie. I did fall asleep randomly last night." Meredith rambles.
"She's free." Derek laughs and grabs Meredith's hand. "Come on." He says as he pulls her out, practically bouncing as they head up to Peds. Both of their hearts are racing as they half walk half run. Meredith, amazed at how happy and hopeful she feels. There's absolutely no fear to be felt in her body. She wants to stop in Dr. Wyatt's office to tell her how much progress she has made. Derek, is about to explode with happiness. He couldn't be any happier and it hasn't even been confirmed. Derek moves so fast off of the elevator that he almost runs over Arizona.
"Woah!" Arizona gasps as she grabs Derek's shoulders to steady herself. "Slow down." She laughs.
"Sorry." Derek apologizes as he wraps his arms around Meredith.
"It's okay, just be careful. So, whois your consult?"
"Right here." Derek looks at Meredith. His smile so wide you could see his dimples around his eyes. He kisses her head for emphasis.
"WHAT?!" Arizona shrieks. Her eyes wide and she moves her arms from where they were folded to cover her mouth with one hand.
"Shh!" Meredith says, eyes wide. "We aren't sure yet. That is why we need you."
"Oh, oh, okay. Come on, let's go." Arizona whispers and leads them over to an exam room. She closes the blinds and pulls out the transvaginal ultrasound and needles to take blood. "First I will do the blood work and put a rush on it with Jane Doe, okay?"
"Okay." Meredith nods as she pushes down her pants and lays back on the table as Derek sits next to her. His one arm around her shoulder and the other stroking her hair.
"I love you." Derek whispers softly against her ear. His forehead resting on the top of her head.
"I love you, too." Meredith smiles up at him while she flinches at the slight needle poke.
"There we go!" Arizona smiles and pats Meredith's arm as she closes the last vile. "I will be right back to do the transvaginal ultrasound." She walks out the door and grabs her favorite nurse. The one she knew that she could trust. "Nurse Kaylee." She calls.
"Yes?" The nurse replies.
"I need you take these labs down and bring the results back as soon as humanly possible. Do not leave until you have them!" Arizona eyes her, wondering. "Can I trust you with the person so that you can just knock and enter?"
"Of course!" Nurse Kaylee replies.
"It's for Dr. Grey, do not say a word!"
"I won't, Dr. Robbins! You know that I'm not like the others." Nurse Kaylee says confidently.
"I do. Thank you!" Arizona pats her arm as she watches the nurse walk away. "I'm back." She says when she goes back into the room. "I gave it to nurse Kaylee. It's in good hands."
"Good choice." Meredith smiles.
"Now… Let's see what we have. Am I going to be an aunt again?" Arizona smiles and sits, getting ready with the probe.
"You okay?" Derek says as he holds Meredith's hand and nuzzles her cheek with his nose.
"Yeah. I…" Meredith pauses. She looks at Arizona and then Derek. "I feel nervous that I am not nervous. That doesn't really make sense." Meredith shakes her head and squeezes Derek's hand. "I'm excited, Derek."
As Derek looks at her in pride, trying to decide how to express his joy, Arizona speaks before he gets the chance. "Congratulations, you guys!" She points to the screen with her cheerful giggle.
"Meredith!" Derek breathes in amazement. He shakes his head in wonder and grabs her cheeks. Kissing her so hard that Meredith quickly grabs onto him to keep from sliding down the leather seat. Meredith laughs happily as they pull away, her heart overflowing with joy and laughter. She caresses Derek's cheeks with her thumbs and is overwhelmed with pride as she sees the happiness in his eyes as she stares deep into them.
"Uhh… Guys, that's not all." Arizona smirks.
"What? Is something wrong?" Derek panics and looks frantically at the screen.
"No. Not all. Look, Derek." Arizona points with a wide smile. Their gaze turns to the screen as Arizona adjusts the vaginal probe.
"Oh!" Derek gasps when he reads the screen.
"Derek." Meredith says. Now she begins to feel a bit nervous.
"We can do this, Mer. We can." Derek brushes her cheek reverently. He is fully reading her mind.
"Twins, Derek! There's one gestational sac with two embryos! They are monochorionic, identical!" Meredith says with wide eyes.
"I'm… also positive that they are mono amniotic. There is nothing dividing the sacs." Arizona says softly.
Meredith and Derek both look up in shock. "But… That's…" Derek gasps and holds Meredith against his chest. Letting his hands rub her back and arm. His chest tightening as some worry seeps inside.
"Incredibly rare and only happens in like 1% of monozygotic pregnancies, yes." Arizona nods. "It's also very high risk due to the babies sharing the amniotic sac with no barrier between. But, do not concentrate on that. I am awesome. Between me, you guys and Alex, we will not let anything happen." She glares at them, giving her strong, confident doctor look. They stare back at her before smiling and nodding.
"We can do this, Derek?" Meredith asks once more. She is fighting the urge to smile until she gets her reassurance.
"Meredith, yes!" Derek says with a bright, happy smile. He wraps his arm around her and cups her cheek, stroking her chin with her thumb. She looks so eager, so in love already.
"Okay." She smiles while looking deep into his eyes. Any newfound fear she may have had was wiped away by her husband's confidence and look of wonder in his eyes. "We're having another baby!"
"We're having two more babies!" Derek laughs and hugs her tight. "Oh, Mer! Mer! Thank you! Thank you!" His eyes glisten with tears and happiness. Meredith grips him tight as she shares in his happiness with her own. There's a knock on the door and nurse Kaylee comes inside.
"Here you go, congratulations." She smiles at Meredith, who thanks her, before leaving.
Arizona takes the paper and reads it. "Woah! You are definitely pregnant. Your HCG numbers are through the roof!" She shows them. "That's definitely a sign of twin pregnancy." As Arizona turns to do calculations, Derek pulls Meredith in for more kisses. Running his hands all over her body. "I would put you at six and a half weeks pregnant, by the way." She says once she finishes counting.
"Damn, Mer. You're amazing!" Derek squeezes her hands and kisses her again. His hands reaching cradling her face.
"More babies, Derek. More us!" Meredith giggles. She looks down at her stomach and places her hands on her stomach.
As Derek looks down and places his hands over her's, Arizona excuses herself. "Hi, babies." Derek collapses to his knees the moment she leaves. He moves her hands and kisses the skin as he replaces her hands with his. "It's daddy and I am so happy you are in there. You have to promise me that you won't roll around too much and fight in your cord. Don't fight about blood supply either." Derek laughs as he finishes.
"Oh, Derek!" Meredith laughs as she runs her fingers in his curls before rubbing her stomach. "I am so happy you're here too, babies. Please listen to daddy. I'm really looking forward to meeting you, it's mama. Although you probably know that." She giggles, her heart soaring high as she feels a slight wetness on her eyes. "Oh." She mumbles.
"Mer." Derek stands, concerned. His brow furrows and he wipes the tears away from her green eyes. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, Der. I'm just so…" She sighs as her hands go to her naked stomach. "I'm just so excited, I want these babies so much. But, at the same time I am so scared, Derek. It is so rare to have twins like this and the mortality rate is…" She shakes her head.
"Don't think about that part, Mer. If we have to, we can come up here three times a day to check them." Derek kisses her softly.
"I know." She takes a deep breath and hugs Derek as she sits upwards.
"Just, trust me, Mer. In a few months, we will have two more babies." Derek strokes her hair and kisses her head as he cradles it against his stomach.
"I do, Der." She says confidently. "I'm going to be positive. I don't want to overwork myself because I already know that I'm going to have to be induced early."
"You might not, Mer." Derek sighs as there is a knock on the door.
"Hey, guys, do you have a few more minutes?" Arizona says.
Derek looks up from rocking Meredith. "Yeah, I just have two more consults in an hour."
"I have one more in an hour." Meredith adds.
"Good, I know you know, but I wanted to give you some information. Also, I was thinking that you might want to consider calling Addison." Arizona pauses at their confused expressions. "Nothing's wrong, guys, I promise. I know what I am doing, I just think it's best to have as many people out here as possible."
"You have delivered these kinds of twins, right?" Derek asks carefully.
"Yes, about three sets and saw two others. Only one set didn't make it because the mom didn't take care of herself. Never went to appointments and when she did, it was too late. Just, check with Addison. You may also want to give Hunt the heads up and Amy."
Meredith looks up at Derek. "She has a point, Derek."
Derek sighs as he looks at Meredith with a smile. "Yes. I have to say, there's no one else that I would trust with your pregnancy other than Arizona, Alex and… Addison." He brushes her hair back.
"Yeah, we have to call her." Meredith adds.
"But, you guys have nothing to worry about. This is going to be amazing, go home and celebrate. After you tell Hunt and, oh! Enjoy the piece of information that is your date of conception and due date."
"What's that?" Meredith asks cautiously.
Arizona bites her lip. "Date of conception appears to be December 13-14 and your due date is September 4th."
"Oh! That's the day…" Derek turns red.
"The day I got cleared for sex after my attack." Meredith laughs.
"You really couldn't wait, huh?" Arizona giggles.
"I'm not sorry." Derek smirks.
"Derek! Meredith gasps as she swats him.
"Before I go, let's schedule your appointments every two weeks and you can come check anytime."
"Okay, we'd like that." Meredith nods, her hand not leaving her stomach, the other she did not want to leave Derek's hand.
"Okay, bye guys! Oh, can I tell Callie?"
Meredith looks at Derek and shrugs. "Yeah, just don't say anything to the kids."
"I won't." Arizona smiles. "Congratulations!" She waves before leaving.
"Der!" Meredith giggles as she stands. She looks at the awestruck look in his eyes as she buttons her pants. How they were roaming her body with lust, admiration and desire.
"I love you, Meredith." Derek wraps his arms around her waist once her jeans were buckled. He pulls her in for a searing kiss. Meredith moans as her arms clutch around his neck.
"I love you, too Derek." She breathes in between kisses.
They pull away after several minutes of intense kissing. Their foreheads touching and Derek holding Meredith's hands. "Thank you, Meredith. Thank you so much." He says.
"For what, Der?"
"Giving me five kids, Mer. For being the best wife ever."
"Hmm…" Meredith says as she closes her eyes and feels his stubble underneath her fingers. Her forehead pressed against his nose. "Thank you for showing me that I wanted this."
"I'm so glad." Derek says with pride.
"Derek?"
"Hmm?"
"You may have to calm down a lot more freak outs… Like this one…" Her natural instinct to worry beginning to build. It feels as though it's doubled with two tiny humans growing inside of her.
"I will calm you down anytime, Mer." He flashes his McDreamy smile.
"Ok… These babies will be okay, right? Because I'm already having flashes of all five of our kids playing together. Of spending mornings in bed with them watching Disney movies."
"Mer, they will be great. They have us looking out for them along with Arizona and Alex. They will also have the greatest neonatal obgyn on their case." He cups her cheeks, looking into her eyes as he kisses her lips after each sentence.
"Okay." Meredith bites her lips and squirms.
"Meredith?"
"What about…us?" She looks down.
"What do you mean, Mer?" Derek thinks. "Oh, Meredith." He coos as he realizes what she was worried about. "We will be great. I will make sure that you and I have time for each other. We have a whole village who will help. We will also have plenty of time together during late night feedings and tears." Derek jokes, making Meredith giggle.
"I will make sure also." Meredith grips his hands.
"Good, now, should we tell the Chief first or wait until after our consults?"
"Can we do our consults together first? I want to keep it to ourselves a little longer."
Derek takes her hand and doesn't let go as they head out of the room and down the hall. "I know, Mer. But because of the situation, people need to know sooner. I don't want Hunt or Amy scheduling you for a major trauma with a lot of stress." He looks at her cautiously. But, Meredith rubs her flat stomach and surprises him.
"Me neither, Derek." She beams as they wait for the elevator.
"Good." He breathes as he pulls her onto the elevator. His arms go around her waist and pulls her close from behind. He kisses her neck and splays his hands on her stomach. She giggles as his lips go up and down her soft skin. When the bell signals their arrival, Derek stays put as Meredith walks forward. People eyeing them as Derek walks with Meredith in his arms. Meredith walks with the widest smile on her face.
"Doing consults together?"
"Yes." Derek nods as he breathes and reluctantly steps away from Meredith. "I'm keeping your hand in mine though" he whispers as she knocks on the door.
"Okay." She giggles before walking farther into the room. As they do their consults, Derek always makes sure some part of them are touching. As Meredith gets the patient history, he keeps his hand on her back. When the patient is talking, their fingers knock against each other, occasionally locking together. He also watches her with shining eyes of wonder and awe the entire time. Meredith does the same when Derek takes the lead, also making sure to stare at him longingly.
"Finally, Hunt, Amy and then the kids." Derek smirks as they close the last chart.
"Not telling the kids." Meredith says.
"Right. I meant we go get them."
"Yes. When should we call Addison?"
"After I work with Zola with bike riding." Derek laughs as he holds one hand, keeping the other around her waist.
"Okay. I promise I won't fall asleep." Meredith says as they get closer to Owen's office.
"It's okay if you do, Mer. At least we know why you were so tired." He kisses her head.
"Yes. Shouldn't we text Amy?" Meredith asks.
"Don't wanna move, can you?" Derek whines.
"Oh, Der." She giggles and kisses him on the cheek. "I will." She texts Amy and knocks on Owen's door.
"Hey!" Owen smiles as he opens the door.
"Hey, you got minute, Chief?"
"Uh, sure Shep." Owen looks at him funny. "Is this a work thing or brother in law thing?"
"Oh…" Meredith blushes as she leans back into Derek. "First Chief and then brother in law when Amy gets here."
"Okay." Owen nods slowly. He opens the door widely and goes to sit behind his desk. Derek and Meredith sitting in the black, leather seated chairs in front of him.
"Well." Derek hums as he looks at Meredith with a wide smile. "We got some news today. Meredith has been feeling nauseous and really tired for about a week now."
"Are you okay?!" Owen immediately sits up and asks.
"Oh, I'm great." Meredith says as both hands go to her stomach.
"She's pregnant. With mono amniotic- mono-chorionic twins!" Derek smiles so widely that Meredith tears up at his joy.
Owen gasps, his jaw dropping. "I… Just… Wow… It's…!" He shakes his head, speechless. "Forget Chief thing, come here, Mer!" Owen stands and hurries around his desk. He pulls her up into a hug. "Congratulations!" Owen says as he holds her tight.
"It's a very high risk pregnancy." Meredith mumbles.
"Only if you let it." Owen says with his hands on her shoulders, looking her right in the eyes. "Don't you worry."
"Don't worry about what?" Amy says as she stands in the doorway.
"I'm pregnant with MoMo twins." Meredith grins with a joyful laugh.
"What?!" Amy squeals, cupping her mouth. She shuts the door and runs to Meredith. "This is wonderful!" Amy laughs. "Congratulations! So, this is why patients were talking about the two doctors being all touchy with each other?"
"Yes, Amy. We just found out a couple hours ago." Derek rolls his eyes. "We are only telling you guys, Arizona because she was the one who told us, who is going to tell Callie and probably Cristina and Alex."
"This is incredible!" Owen says in shock. "How far along?"
"Six and a half weeks." Meredith says as she can't resist anymore and grabs Derek's hand.
"So… When you were cleared after your accident?" Amy laughs. "Seriously?!"
"Why does everyone notice that?" Derek shakes his head.
"Because it's funny, though my bet was on after all the times you snuck away at Christmas." Amy snorts. "Especially after all of the… Mosquito bites."
"Amy!" Owen laughs.
"Anyway." Derek clears his throat. "We just wanted to make some preparations."
"We understand. I'm going to call Addison and offer her a period of nine months here. She needs to be on your team along with Robbins and Karev." Owen takes the lead.
"Right, we were going to call her later." Derek adds.
"Let's call her now. So, she will be on your team and Meredith, as your Chief and your brother in law, I say in about a month we will decrease your trauma and on call time. Is that understood?"
"Of course, Hunt. We were going to ask that of you anyway." Derek smiles.
"No long surgeries after you are twelve weeks." Amy adds.
"I won't, guys." Meredith smiles as she holds her stomach.
"Of course, Shepherd this means we have to ask a bit more from you." Owen crosses his arms and looks at Derek. Meredith looks at Derek in concern.
Derek gives a soft smile to Meredith, hoping to calm her worries. "It's okay, Hunt. What are you referring to?"
"Like, let Meredith be the one leaving early. You take 1-2 extra on call shifts instead of Mer doing them. You would leave at five."
"As long as it means that my wife and babies are safe, I can do that for a few months." Derek kisses Meredith. "Is that okay, Mer?"
Meredith smiles. "Yes, Derek. It's not like you're staying overnight. Right?" She turns to Owen and Amy.
"I will not schedule him for long surgeries that take hours. He will not work overnight, Meredith. If it's nearing five, I will figure something out." Amy smiles.
"If an emergency arises, I will make sure someone comes to help you, Mer. Basically you two will be switching schedules for a few months." Owen says, Meredith nodding in agreement. "In fact, that's actually earlier than Meredith leaves."
Derek sighs. "As long as I'm not missing my family."
"You won't, Derek. If you have concerns, talk to me. But, we are all family, so we will all help." Owen explains. "You still get to keep all of your pre planned date nights. Plus, the on call and extreme traumas are really a "what if" situation. We will work through Amy, Nelson and Clemens before we get to you, Derek."
"Good!" Meredith and Derek exclaim together. Feeling much better.
"Excellent, now, let's call Dr. Montgomery." Owen smiles.
"Are you sure, Derek?" Meredith whispers to her husband.
"Yes, Mer. Just like I would insist that she come here if she had something wrong with her Neuro function or G.I system." Derek strokes Meredith's cheeks carefully.
"She probably will hate me more now."
"Meredith?" Derek looks at her confused. "She doesn't hate you. Remember, at the wedding she apologized for keeping me from you for so long." He leans over to kiss her.
Meredith is silent for a few moments before a smile creeps onto her face. "Okay."
"Are we ready?" Owen asks as Amy sits in the chair next to him.
"Yes." Meredith nods as Derek squeezes her hand. Owen dials the number before putting it on speaker. It rings three times before a familiar voice answers.
"Oceanside Wellness, Dr. Addison Montgomery speaking."
"Hi, Addison, it's Dr. Hunt at Grey-Sloan."
"Oh! Hey, how's it going? How's Amy?"
"I'm swell, thanks for asking, Addie!" Amy smirks.
"I'm on speakerphone?"
"Yes, Addison." Owen chuckles. "I'm calling because I have a major case that I need your help with as it will…uh…take several months."
"What kind of case?" Addison asks skeptically.
"A high risk pregnancy of someone near and dear to all of us. Including you." Amy finishes, looking at Meredith and Derek who were biting their lips.
"Amy?! Who are we talking about?" Addison says in alarm.
"Addie." Derek speaks up now, his hand clutching his wife's soft hand. "Meredith is pregnant with what Arizona believes to be MoMo twins. It's definitely twins and Arizona couldn't see the dividing line. She is six and a half weeks."
"Derek." Addison gasps. "This is… Of course I will help!" She breathes in and out from shock. "Congratulations, first!"
"Thanks." Derek and Meredith both say.
"Now, Meredith, please don't worry. It's a tough case, but I have done this before. I hope you are not planning on overworking yourself?"
"Already taken care of." Meredith smiles.
"Also, if Arizona didn't see a dividing line, she is most likely accurate. You guys have the top, top, top of the line in those pieces of equipment." They nod with more joy than nerves this time. Meredith imagining two boys, identical to Derek. Meanwhile, Derek imagining two little girls identical to Meredith. Right down to the giggle. "I will fly out tomorrow for a couple days to check and then I will come out for a week every other week."
"Sounds good." Owen nods.
"I usually recommend bed rest in the hospital at 27 weeks and delivery at between 30 to 32 weeks. I would stay there the whole time." Addison explains.
The whole room is silent as they process the information. "But, that's preemie." Meredith whispers and Derek scoots closer to wrap her in his arms.
"Meredith, I will not deliver until I feel that you and them are ready."
"We can do this, Mer." Derek says with his lips pressed against her head.
"Sofia was a lot younger and now look at her." Addison says.
"Okay. I will trust you." Meredith smiles.
"Good. Meredith?" She asks.
"Hmm?" Hums Meredith.
"Thank you for making Derek beyond happier than he has ever been. I can feel his happiness through the phone." Addison says sincerely.
Meredith looks at the phone, shocked. "Oh, um… Thanks, Addison." She blushes as Derek hugs her tight.
"She's right." Derek whispers for only Meredith to hear.
"So, we will see you tomorrow?" Owen asks.
"Yes and I will give you an ultrasound tomorrow and the next two days, just to check." Addison reports.
"We will be there." Derek smiles.
"Congratulations, guys!" Addison says with a slight giggle before hanging up the phone.
"It's settled, then." Owen says as they hang up the phone. "Meredith, you will still be working. We are just going to be careful, okay? Don't want my nephews or nieces having a hard time in there."
"Thanks, Owen." Meredith says with one hand on her stomach, the other clutching Derek.
"If you feel weird at all. Come tell me, okay?" Adds Amy.
"We will." Meredith smiles.
"Are you telling the kids?" Asks Amy.
"Uh, not today." Derek nods.
"How about after Zola's party? As her last present?" Meredith smiles at Derek.
"She would love that!" Laughs Derek.
"Hmm, speaking of the kids, we should go get them." She mentions.
"Yes." Derek stands and reaches for Meredith's hand. "Thanks, Owen, Amy." He turns to look at his brother in law and sister.
"Congratulations." Amy waves as they head towards the door.
Derek smirks at Meredith the entire walk to the daycare. Meredith turns and smiles back at him with a giggle as she leads him forward. When they reach an empty hallway, Derek pulls them into a dark corner and pushes her up against the wall. His hands roaming her waist. "Oh, Mer! Mer!" He hums as he rubs her stomach and captures her lips in a passionate kiss. "I love you!" He moans as his tongue goes far into her mouth.
"I love you, too, Der." Meredith says as she pants. Her hands holding his strong jaw. Keeping him kissing.
"We're going to be mama and daddy again." Derek laughs with joy.
"We are!" Meredith gasps and throws her arms around his neck and kisses his jaw up and down. "I'm so excited, Derek."
"Oh, Meredith!" He gasps, the words like music to his ears as he watches her green eyes dance with delight. "Me too!"
"Let's get pizza to celebrate without the kids knowing that we are celebrating."
"Good idea, Mer." Derek laughs and grabs her hand to pull her along. They get to the daycare and open the door.
"Oh!" Meredith gasps as she feels a rush of emotions. She sees Bailey playing trains with his friend Tyler and Lexie happily rocking a baby doll. What makes her tear up the most is the sounds of the younger babies babbling and some crying.
"Hormones?" Derek says softly as he hugs her close.
"Yes." She chokes back tears. "I wasn't like this with Bails or Lexie. Not this early anyway."
"Shh, I know, Mer." Derek hugs her and kisses her head right there in the doorway of the daycare. "You have two in there now and we got lots of information today." Meredith nods as she snuggles against Derek's chest and places both hands on her stomach.
"Mama! Daddy!" Bailey smiles as he looks up to see them standing in the doorway. "Lexie, look!" He calls his sister and points.
Lexie looks and squeals as she sees her parents. Dropping the doll at the same time as Bailey stands and drops his car, Lexie toddles quickly over. Gripping Derek's legs, she smiles up at him. Her bottom teeth showing. "Dada!" She giggles and buries her face in his pants.
"There's my angel!" Derek coos and lifts her up high with sparkly eyes.
"Sure, doesn't even look at me." Meredith rolls her eyes.
"Bailey hasn't noticed me either." Derek smirks as Bailey crashes into Meredith. "Besides, she clung to you yesterday."
"Mama! Mama!" Bailey jumps while looking up at her.
"He did when he noticed us inside." Meredith smirks as Derek smothers Lexie in kisses. "Hi, buddy!" She grabs her boy and squeezes him in a hug. Stopping suddenly when she feels herself squeeze Bailey against her stomach. "Oh!" She gasps and moves her waist back and looks at Derek.
"Mer?"
"Mama, don't stop the squeezes!" Bailey whines.
"One second, Bails." Meredith whispers and stands.
"Mer?" Derek says again. He holds her shoulder and looks her over carefully.
"I was squashing them, Derek." She whispers as she turns her head away from Bailey to tell Derek.
"Oh, Mer." Derek adjusts Lexie to one arm so that he could hug her to him. "They can't feel it." He murmurs with a kiss to her head.
"I know, it's just, it's already a small space and, and, and, and they are already high risk." Meredith rambles as she collapses against Derek's chest.
"Mer… Mer… Breathe, breathe." He coos as he rocks her. "Our babies are great. Safe inside mama." Derek whispers only for Meredith. Derek lifts her chin to look her in the eyes. "It will be okay." He says before kissing her.
"Okay." Meredith says after a minute of looking deep into his eyes.
"Hi, mama!" Lexie finally babbles.
"Hi, my little daddy's girl." Meredith tickles Lexie after kissing her chubby cheek.
"Dada!" She claps her hand.
"Mama! Can I have more squeezes?" Bailey smiles.
"Derek?" She looks at him again. Derek nods and gives a reassuring look. "Of course, Bailey!" Meredith kneels again and opens her arms. "Come here, bud!"
"Yay!" Bailey laughs as she hugs him close and kisses him. "Hi, daddy!" He hugs Derek's legs after Meredith releases him.
"Hey, buddy!" Derek holds his head against his legs to hug him. He helps Meredith stand before rubbing Bailey's light hair. "Let's go get Zo. We're going to order lots of pizza and cheesy bread tonight."
"Yay!" Bailey cheers as he grabs Meredith's hand. She giggles as Derek immediately grabs her other hand before they head towards the exit of the hospital. Meredith watching Derek as they move down the hall. She rests her head on his shoulder, giggling as she watches Lexie reach up to grab his curls.
"Mer!" They hear someone call as they were approaching the door.
"Oh, Cristina!" Meredith gasps in surprise.
"Hey!" Cristina says as she jogs closer. "Hey, Bailey, hey Lex!" She smiles at the kids.
"Hi, auntie Cristina!" Bailey waves.
"Hey, Derek." They greet each other as well.
"Hey, I'm so sorry. This afternoon got a bit crazy." Meredith says.
"It's okay, Mer. If I hadn't run into you, I would have texted you." Cristina says. "So?" She looks expectantly.
Meredith smiles and looks up at Derek who is grinning like a maniac. He nods at her to continue and pulls her close. "Okay." She breathes and let's go of Bailey to pull close to Cristina's ear. "I'm six and a half week pregnant with MoMo twins." Meredith whispers with a happy giggle, pressing her hand on her stomach.
"Meredith!" Cristina gasps in utter shock, covering her mouth that had fallen open. "I'm not sure if I'm more in shock over this or what I'm about to say." She looks between Meredith and Derek with wide, brown eyes. "I am going to say something that old me would probably not do." Taking a deep breath, Cristina pulls Meredith and Derek into a hug. Squishing Lexie and Bailey, who had been standing in front of Meredith, in the process. "I am so happy for you! Congratulations!" She holds both close.
"Thanks, Cristina." Derek says when Meredith tears up in shock.
"You deserve this. Do…they know?" She looks at Bailey and Lexie.
"Not until after Zo's party." Meredith whispers. "Cristina… It's mono amniotic- mono-chorionic. High risk."
"Meredith." Cristina says in exasperation and grabs her shoulders. "You have survived a bomb, a gunman, plane crash, drowning and Bailey's whole birth complications. You. Deserve. This. Everything will be great."
"Thank you, Cristina." Derek pats her shoulder. "She's right, Mer." He kisses her, flashing the McDreamy smile.
"I know." Meredith nuzzles into Derek.
"Good. Now, go get your other one and let me know if I need to watch them so you two can…" Cristina laughs and waves, leaving them stunned in the entrance of the hospital .
"Wow." Meredith gasps as she looks at Derek in shock.
"I know!" Derek shakes his head and pulls her close. Unable to resist, Derek pauses to kiss her over and over. He proceeds to lead his family out of the hospital and to the car to go get Zola before a night of super secret celebrating of the two little miracles inside of Meredith.
