I wake up to the sound of beeping. My eyes open slowly as I find myself on the hospital bed now in a patient gown. I look around and find Kakashi asleep to my left, leaning on the bed on me while holding my hand. Takashi is asleep on the small sofa some feet away. I then lay eyes on the encased incubator where I see my baby.
"Sora…" I weakly say and try to get up.
"Hey," Kakashi wakes up at me moving and keeps me laying down. "Don't move so much. You need to rest."
"Sora…Is she okay?"
"She'll be fine. That'll be explained when Sakura returns," Kakashi reassures me.
I lay my head down again as I stare at the incubator.
"Sora…" Kakashi says. "You kept repeating that name in your sleep…Is that our daughter's name?"
"Yes…" I reply.
Kakashi turns his gaze over to the incubator in thought.
"Sora, huh…" Kakashi says. "I love it."
Kakashi turns to me while still holding my hand. He reaches with his other hand to caress my face with a look of relief.
"I thought I was gonna lose you…" Kakashi mutters with teary eyes.
"I'm not going anywhere that easily…" I give him a weak smile.
Kakashi can't help but smile a bit as he pulls his mask down and plants a kiss on my mouth.
"How long have I been out?" I ask after we break away.
"Since yesterday," Kakashi pulls his mask up. "You really gave us a scare."
"I don't know what happened…"
"Sakura explained it to me, but I'd prefer she explain it to you."
"When will she return?"
"Any minute now," Kakashi glances at the clock that reads 8:36am. "She came in early to check on the both of you."
"But Sora's been fine, right? She's okay?"
"Yes. She'll be fine."
I sigh in relief. There's a knock on the door and Sakura enters the room with a rolling tray of food.
"You're up," Sakura smiles in relief at me as she closes the door. "I've brought you breakfast."
"Thank you," I say.
Kakashi sets up the tray in front of me to eat.
"Alright," Sakura takes her clipboard. "If you feel you're ready, I can explain what happened. I'm sure you have many questions."
"Yes, please go ahead," I say before biting into toast.
"Your pregnancy was affected by your infertility. Really, your daughter could have been a stillborn…but she made it through, despite being born premature a month and a half. The extreme exhaustion the first three months also played a part in it. Her delivery was fairly easy considering her size. She's been put in an incubator until she shows she can sustain herself. But so far," Sakura turns her gaze to Sora. "She has been strong and is pulling through."
"Why did I fall unconscious?" I ask.
"The pregnancy had you very weak," Sakura replies. "The fetus has been heavily feeding off your nutrients due to its weak state. That's what made you so exhausted and caused you to collapse when you were going into premature labor. But if the fetus hadn't fed on your nutrients like it did, she probably wouldn't have survived. Luckily your body was able to handle it, otherwise, there's a chance you wouldn't have survived."
"Well I'll be damned…" I blink in thought.
"Other than that, you and your daughter will be making a recovery," Sakura smiles in relief.
"Thank you so much, Sakura," I give her a tired but appreciative smile.
"You've done a great job taking care of my wife and newborn daughter," Kakashi also thanks her. "I'm grateful."
"Of course. You're most welcome," Sakura nods. "I'll leave you to eat your breakfast. Eat everything and take your supplements Orochimaru gave you. Those supplements also played a role in sustaining the fetus and yourself."
"That's Orochimaru for you," I munch on scrambled eggs.
"Oh! I need to fill out the birth certificate," Sakura looks down at her clipboard. "I need the name of your daughter to fill it out."
"Sora," I reply.
"Sora Uchiha," Sakura writes. "Does that sound correct?"
"Yes," Kakashi nods.
"Born June 26th. Mother: Denizu Uchiha. Father: Kakashi Hatake."
"Perfect," I smile.
"Sounds good," Sakura finishes writing. "I'll leave you to your breakfast."
Sakura leaves the room and closes the door behind her.
"Sora Hatake has a good ring to it too," I say.
"She and Takashi can go by both," Kakashi says.
"When they make us mad, we'll refer to their full names: Takashi Uchiha-Hatake and Sora Uchiha-Hatake."
"That works," Kakashi chuckles.
I glance over to Takashi who is sound asleep on the couch.
"He was up just as long as I was," Kakashi says. "He was also very worried."
"I can imagine…" I stare at Takashi.
I continue to eat my breakfast. Kakashi has a thoughtful stare at the blankets.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"I just…feel partly at fault for this," Kakashi rubs his face. "If I hadn't been so careless when you and I made love…"
"Kakashi…" I take a hold of his hand. "If you and I didn't make love…we wouldn't have our two beautiful children."
Kakashi gazes at me with love in his eyes as he holds my hand.
"I'm thankful she's making a recovery," I glance over to Sora in the incubator.
"She's not that small," Kakashi also looks over at her. "But she still needs to be inside the incubator unit to better sustain herself."
"I was so scared when I didn't hear her cry."
"She's been very quiet."
"Perhaps this is her taking after your calmness," I smile.
"It's still too soon to tell," Kakashi also smiles. "But I hope you're right."
"Mom?" Takashi wakes up. "Mom!" He rushes over to me and hugs me.
"Hey, honey," I hug him.
"How are you doing?" Takashi asks.
"I'm doing well. I'll be up and about in no time."
"Don't rush your recovery. You need to take it easy."
"I will," I give him a reassuring smile.
"So…what did you name my sister?"
"Sora."
"Sora…Sora Uchiha…I love it!" Takashi smiles cheekily.
It's past lunch time. I'm in the room with Kakashi and Sora while Takashi has gone out to get some fresh air. Sora continues to sleep peacefully in the incubator. There's a knock at the door.
"Denizu," Orochimaru walks in with Log.
"Orochimaru," I'm surprised.
"I came as soon as I heard news about you and your daughter."
He walks over to the incubator and peers in at Sora.
"I see she's doing well," he says.
"She's pulling through," Kakashi says. "We were told that the supplements you gave Denizu helped keep Sora and Denizu nourished."
"I'm glad to hear," Orochimaru is relieved. "Other than that, you and Sora are well?"
"Yes. She and I just need to rest," I reply. "Once Sora can sustain herself properly, she can go home with us."
"That's excellent news… and her name is Sora? Such a beautiful name," he peers at Sora again.
"She'll be a strong one," Log also peers into the incubator at Sora.
"Thank you," I smile at them.
"We've brought you more supplements," Orochimaru turns to me and signals Log to walk over and hand me the bottle of supplements. "Take them as usual."
"Is there anything else I should do?" I ask as I take the bottle from Log.
"Nothing else the doctor has already said. Just rest," Orochimaru replies.
"I'll make sure of it," Kakashi nods.
"Do you have any concerns?" Orochimaru asks.
"Not at the moment," I reply.
"Very well. Just focus on resting. Log and I will be running some errands in the village. I hope to see you and your daughter out of the hospital in healthy condition soon."
"Enjoy your stroll in the village," Kakashi nods.
With that, Orochimaru and Log exit the room and close the door after them. I let out a yawn.
"You're all done with your lunch," Kakashi moves the tray away from the bed. "Take a nap. It'll do you good."
"That sounds like a good idea," I nod tiredly.
I glance over at the incubator where Sora is sleeping soundly.
"She's in good hands," Kakashi reassures me.
I turn my head to Kakashi with a smile as I slowly feel myself drift off to sleep.
I slowly open my eyes and see Kurenai and Mizuki at the sides of my bed.
"Had a good nap?" Kurenai smiles.
"Hey there…" I tiredly smile at them.
"We've brought you and Sora some flowers," Mizuki gestures at the collection of flowers on the table nearby. "It seems we're not the only ones who have."
"Thank you," I see all the flowers and cards.
"How is she doing?" Kurenai glances over at Sora.
"She's doing well, despite having been born a month and a half premature."
"She'll be a strong one like you," Kurenai smiles.
I glance at the clock and it reads 3:23pm. I stare over at Sora as she lays quietly in the incubator.
"I haven't gotten the chance to hold her yet…" I say.
"I'm sure you will soon," Mizuki comforts.
"As long as she gets better….where are the kids and Kakashi?"
"The kids are all out together," Kurenai replies. "Kakashi and Gai joined them. They'll be back later. They wanted us ladies to have time alone."
"Let's hope it wasn't a bad idea to leave them all alone to fend for themselves…" I joke.
Kurenai and Mizuki laugh.
I'm sitting up on my bed as I eat my dinner on the tray. Kakashi and Takashi eat the food they bought earlier from a restaurant.
"Can't wait to eat some ice cream when I get out," I munch on some bread.
"I feel for you, mom," Takashi says.
"When it's time for you and Sora to go home," Kakashi finishes his food and pulls his mask back up. "We can get ice cream to celebrate."
There's a knock at the door and Sakura walks in.
"You look better already," she smiles at me.
"I'm getting there," I laugh a bit.
"I've come to inform you the status on Sora's feeding skills," she looks down at her clipboard. "I think it's time she tries to breastfeed. The feeding tube has been helpful but she seems to have the necessary skills to breastfeed properly."
"Yes, we can try," I nod eagerly. "I've been waiting to hold her."
"Very well," Sakura nods.
Sakura walks over to the incubator and opens it, properly handling the equipment to carry Sora out. She makes her way over to me after Kakashi has moved the tray away from the bed. He also gives me a blanket to wrap Sora in. I pull down my patient gown to expose my left breast.
"Well…" Sakura smiles as she hands me Sora. "Here's your daughter."
I wrap Sora up in the pink blanket and bring her to my breast. She sets her little hand on my breast as she tries to latch on to my nipple. It takes her a moment to latch on but figures out to suck. She successfully begins to feed.
"My little Sora…" my eyes tear up at the sight of her.
"Congratulations again, Denizu-sensei, Kakashi-sensei," Sakura smiles down at us. "I'll leave to give you a moment."
Sakura takes her leave from the room, closing the door after her. Kakashi comes closer to take a look at Sora from the left side of the bed.
"She's beautiful," a tear falls down my cheek in joy.
"She's our little girl," Kakashi tears up a bit.
"Takashi…" I glance over at him on the couch. "Come meet your baby sister."
Takashi immediately sets his finished food down and makes his way over next to Kakashi. Kakashi puts a hand on Takashi's shoulder as they lean in to see Sora.
"Sora…meet your father and big brother…" I smile down at her.
Takashi stares at her sister in awe and tears up a bit.
"Hi, baby sister…" Takashi lets out a smile. "I'm your big brother."
