Carolyn bitterly complains to her mother for taking away her birth control pills.

"You cannot escape your duty" Elizabeth reminds her. "And it will make your husband happy"

"As you made my father happy"

"He was happy. Until the end."

"And Uncle Roger, was he happy?"

"He would not do his duty. We did not object to his… tastes. But he refused to continue his line. That's why he was…punished."

"As my father was punished?"

"He was not. It was what he owed us."

"And what Will owes the family too?"

"Having a child will make him happy. Don't you want to see him happy?"

"AS the turkey being fattened is happy, isn't he? That's all that he is."

"Carolyn, you had expensive tastes as a child. You still do. How do you think they were paid?"

"If I had known the price…"

"You would not have cared, not then. You liked your pretty baubles too much."

"I learned, Mother, I learned. And I hate you. And the whole Collins family!"

Elizabeth shrugs, and turs. "The discussion is over."

She sees Roger Collins hovering over the window. "Be gone. You are bound to silence." She commands him. But the phantom remains, looking accusingly at her.

AT the Old House Barnabas talks Will into providing him with an introduction to the family. There are things going on there that he wants to investigate, and he needs to be able to come and go, and ask questions. Will constructs him a South American background, and a life history, which he helps Barnabas remember.
