Hey all! I am so sorry for the little wait with this chapter. Honestly I wasn't feeling this chapter or even this story so I let myself get wrapped up in my Christmas story Bittersweet Home Coming. And that did me wonders as I was able to write this chapter with no problems.
Enjoy!
Zoe smiled, cracking an eye open to look at her fiancé as he rubbed small circles on her abdomen as he softly talked to her midsection. She thought she had heard him singing softly under his breath, though she couldn't be sure as she was still out of it with sleep. She liked to believe that he was singing.
"As your daddy, it's my duty to keep you safe and to keep your mom from doing crazy things," he smirked, catching her eye. He pressed a kiss to her abdomen, kissing his way up her stomach, pushing the night shirt she wore higher as his kisses moved up her body. "Morning babe," he whispered, pressing kisses along her jaw line.
"Morning," she moaned lightly, feeling just how good of a morning he's having, pressed against her thigh.
"How long do we have?" He asked, pulling the night shirt off of her.
"An hour," she said, catching a glimpse of the clock, running her hands over his bare back, fingers digging into the soft flesh as his mouth attached itself to her neck.
With their morning wake-up call, mixed with quite the little workout; they were running a bit behind, Wade assuring Zoe they'd be able to make the few minutes up on the road to Mobile.
"I don't see why we have to go all the way to Mobile when Brick has delivered over half of Bluebell, including you," Wade commented a few minutes into the drive.
"Actually, it was all my dad; he didn't trust any doctor to deliver his precious baby girl," she smiled. "Do you know how awkward it is to have your best friend's dad up in your business like that?" She asked, scrunching her face up disgustedly. "No, thank you," she told him.
"That would be a bit awkward," he nodded. "I guess it would be like your dad doing it," he said, shaking his head. Mobile being the right choice in the matter.
"Oh yeah. Now you can see why we're making the 20-minute drive to Mobile for," she told him.
The last of the car ride, where Wade did make up the time like he said he would, was spent going over their plans after the doctor appointment, one he was excited for, they weren't about ready to learn the sex of their baby, as that was far too soon, and they didn't know if they wanted to know or wait, they'd cross that bridge when it came, no today they'd be able to listen to the heartbeat for the first time, well the possibility at least.
Waiting in the waiting room had just about killed him with the way it dragged on and on with no nurse in sight calling them back. He stayed with Zoe as they did what testing that needed to be done, all but the urine sample, that one she could do on her own.
"Do keep in mind that we might not be able to hear your baby's heartbeat today and that will be perfectly normal, and we will be able to hear it at your next appointment," they were told.
Wade took Zoe's hand in his as they waited for their baby's heartbeat to fill the room. He kissed her hand, as she was told the gel would be cold on her exposed skin. He was led to believe it was extra cold with the face she made. He stroked her hair as they waited for the small room to fill up with the small thump, thump of their little baby. When the heartbeat came through for them to hear, he got a little more emotional than he thought possible. He kissed Zoe's head, burying his face into her hair as the rapid tiny heartbeats filled his ears. In that moment hearing his baby's heartbeat, was the singular best thing he's ever heard in his life.
"I swear I wasn't crying," he lamely told Zoe as they sat waiting for their lunch to arrive. She smirked at him, knowing it was nothing more than a lie.
"Then who else was in the room with us, crying into my hair?" She asked, reaching for his hand. "I think my hair is still damp," she teased.
"Fine," he playfully pouted, a smile breaking out on his face. "It's hard not to cry when something that sweet is being played for you to hear. It's emotional," he told her.
"I know, because I cried as well. It's pretty special," she commented, placing her free hand on her stomach. "I was thinking that maybe we hold off on getting married until after our little bundle of joy is born," she suggested. She didn't want to go through that sort of stress while carrying such a precious life.
"I get where you're coming from, I really do, but Zoe, I want to be married before our little sport is born," he told her. "We don't need to have a big elaborate wedding; a courthouse will do, and we can always do the big event later," he explained.
"That wouldn't be so bad," she smiled. It wasn't often Wade asked something this huge from her, and she got how important it is to him to be married and really an official family, even if they were a family without a paper saying so.
"And I promise; you wouldn't have an ounce of stress over it; I will get it all sorted out and come up with a bogus story to tell our friends," he assured her.
"For everyone except Lemon and AB, I was sort of freaking out on how to tell you and what you'd say that I went to them," Zoe told him, feeling bad in having told anyone before telling the one person that needed to know. "I'm sorry."
Wade kissed the back of her hand. "All's forgiven Zoe; I'm not mad about it all; they're your friends, and you needed the comfort they can give you that you needed at that time," he softly told her, letting her know that his feelings hadn't been hurt by it. Heck with Lemon knowing about Zoe being pregnant, he was certain that she would go full-on Lemon mode and plan the rest of their wedding.
"I promise you'll be the first one to know with our next little bundle," she promised him.
"Damn straight," he agreed, a smirk playing across his lips, because yes, they needed to have more than one kid, because Jesse had been his best friend growing up and that's what he wants for his children.
"You know you shouldn't be doing too much up here," he said, coming to a stop in the doorway of Zoe's old bedroom, the room she wanted to turn into a nursery for their first born.
"I didn't have much else to do," she shrugged. She did enjoy going through the stuff of hers that her dad kept, for who knows what reason. She already had a box of old clothes to donate, a box of old school projects that dated all the way back to preschool. "It's not as if I am moving anything heavy," she told him, taking a seat on her old bed.
"Let me know when it's time to take this bed out, along with the dresser, and I'll move it for you," he warned, taking a seat next to her, placing a hand on her stomach. He's found that when he's near her, his hand is almost always laying on her stomach in a protective way, wanting to keep his little one safe.
"That I can do," she nodded, laying her head on his shoulder. "Everything going okay in the office?" He had locked himself in hers dad's old office, saying he had a very important video chat with someone, keeping the details to himself.
"Better than okay," he nodded. "I was offered an opportunity to franchise the Jammer…" he told her trailing off not sure how to word the rest of it.
"Wade that's amazing," Zoe gushed, kissing him soundly on the lips.
"I guess," he sighed, caressing her stomach. Zoe frowned looking at him, the question in her eyes. "Atlanta, is the city they want," he told her. He tried to get them to pick a city closer to Bluebell, but they weren't sold on it.
"That's what?" Zoe asked, trying to remember the distance in her head, but failing to do so.
"Four and a half hours away," he informed her. "I really want to take the offer, but I can't because of this one," he said, his gaze flicking down to where his hand rested on her stomach.
"We can find a way to make it work, but I am not going to tell you to take the offer, as I don't want you away all the time getting it off the ground because I want you here," she told him, placing a finger over his lips when he went to talk. "I know how important and how big of a deal this is to you, Wade," she started to say, Wade cutting her off.
"That may be true, but there's nothing more important to me than our family. If people want to experience what the Jammer has, they can travel to little old Bluebell for that experience. You only get to experience your first child being born once," he explained to her.
Sure they could've fought about it. Would it have proven anything to them? No, the most it would have caused was tears on Zoe's part and a lot of unneeded stress. Franchising the Jammer as huge of a milestone that is, and to show everyone that he's killing it as a bar owner, it wasn't the most important thing to him in life, not anymore.
"Have I told you lately how much I love you?" She whispered, kissing his cheek.
"As often as I do," he replied cheekily, "I love you and our little bean sprout," he told her, getting a questionable look from his fiancée. "We haven't talked about names," he shrugged. "That and I don't know how big our little bean is," be shrugged.
"You're cute," she chuckled.
"Only for you baby."
