Cas woke up first the next morning and he just laid there and watched Dean sleep for a little bit. When he wasn't having nightmares, Dean looks so peaceful and Cas wish Dean could feel that way when he was awake.
Cas slowly got out of bed so he wouldn't wake Dean. Once he was finished in the bathroom he went to go turn the tv on when he saw Dean's sketch book open on the table. He picked it up and stared at the simple, yet detailed sketch and he felt guilty all over again. Letting out a sigh Cas went back to the bedroom, no longer in the mood to watch tv.
He slid back in bed and laid down behind Dean who had rolled over in his sleep. Cas flung an arm around his waist and carefully pulled Dean as close as possible.
Startling at the sudden movement and pressure on his waist Dean woke up with a small gasp. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you, or wake you up." Cas apologized.
"It's alright." Dean said horsely and rolled back over to face the dark haired boy. "What time is it anyway?"
"About 9:30." Cas whispered.
"You okay?" Dean asked noticing Cas was kind of down.
"Not really." Cas sighed. "I saw your sketch from last night and it just reminded me how much of an ass I am."
"Hey. It was just a sketch out of the heat of the moment." Dean said and placed his hand on Cas' cheek noticing the stubble starting to come in. "I'm not mad anymore."
Cas nodded and put his hand on top of Dean's.
"You should grow out a beard. I wanna know what you'd look like with one." Dean grinned and it got a smile out of Cas.
"We'll see. But we should probably go get Henry."
It was the first day back to school after Christmas break. Things were still a little awkward for Dean after his incident with Billy. Between him, Cas and Mary, Billy had 3 charges of sexual harassment and omega cruelty and got 5 years in jail. So the bullying had practically vanished for Dean, who was grateful for.
Play practice had been going everyday since the day after Christmas and Dean was in double time juggling between memorizing and rehearsing lines, working on the set, and making sure Henry didn't blow a gasket while in his portable crib.
An announcement had been made before the final bell rang to inform all seniors that there would be a class meeting after school tomorrow for the annual senior camping trip.
"I don't want to do this stupid camping trip." Dean grumbled on the way to the auditorium after going to pick up Henry.
"I think it would be kind of fun." Cas said, adjusting the portable crib on his shoulder.
Once they got into the auditorium they had already started practice. Cas quickly assembled the crib and Dean set Henry down in it with a blanket and a few toys. Cas went and sat down to wait for Mrs. Rosen or Mr. Owens to tell him to get on stage while Dean went backstage to work on the set until needed.
The following Monday, it was Cas' turn to bring Henry to school for 3 days then it would be Dean's since he should have the boot off by then. "Do you know how fucking hard this is going to be now that he's wanting to be on the constant move?" Dean groaned once Henry was strapped in the backseat and he got buckled in himself.
"Extremely." Cas sighed.
"I'm glad I'll just have a doll when it's my turn." Sam commented.
"You better have just a fucking doll." Dean said whipping his head back. "Mom took it easy on me but if she has another kid have a kid while they're in high school she might keel over." Dean said.
"Dude. I don't plan on having kids for a long ass time." Sam said looking over at Henry. "Don't get me wrong I love Henry but man, you guys are insane."
Cas pulled into a spot close to Charlie and started getting the carseat and diaper bag, along with his normal bag. "Man, I'm glad I just have a doll next week." Charlie commented once she saw Cas.
"Did you and Sam rehearse this or something?" Cas deadpanned.
"Oooo someones cranky." Charlie said.
"I'm just dreading this because Henry is not going to like being strapped down all day." Cas sighed and thanked Dean when he held the door open.
"That's true. Sorry about your bad luck!" Charlie grinned and ran off before Dean or Cas could say anything.
"I'm going to take a page out of Charlie's book. Bye!" Sam said and took off towards his homeroom.
"Well, bye!" Dean said as well and acted like he was going to take off too.
"Very funny." Cas rolled his eyes and switched Henry over to his other hand. "Let's just get this week over with."
By time lunch rolled around Cas had a serious migraine. Sensing Cas was about to loose it, Dean grabbed Henry and started feeding him some lunch.
"Thank you." Cas sighed and put his head on the table. "He's fine if I hold him but if he stays in his carseat he screams." Cas groaned. "So of course it's hard to do my work or take notes… I've had to change his diaper 3 times."
"Cas it's no different than being at home, we have to change his diapers all day." Dean said.
"That's not the point Dean." Cas groaned.
"I'm sorry. I know I'll be in your shoes later." Dean chuckled.
When it was finally time for Bobby's class, Cas never felt more relieved knowing there was plenty of room he could actually block off a small section and let Henry roam a bit. When he and Dean walked in they both stopped in their tracks. Next to Bobby's desk and the table they always sat off was a small blocked off area already.
"I figured you idjits were about ready to blow a gasket since Henry would be all cranky." Bobby explained when he noticed the boys walk in.
"Bobby, I love you." Cas said and went straight for the blocked off space.
Dean and Cas celebrated Dean's birthday the night before since Cas would be at training. Sam and Jess agreed to watch Henry so the boys could go out. Dean pulled up to the roadhouse, and Ellen gave him a big hug. "Happy birthday sweetie."
"Thanks." Dean blushed.
"I'll bring out your usuals." Ellen said and turned back to the kitchen.
After the boys finished eating Ellen brought out a slice of apple pie with a candle in it. "Thanks Ellen, you didn't have to do that." Dean grinned.
"It's alright, it was the last slice anyway." She winked and went to tend to other tables.
"Have a good weekend." Dean said sleepily when he felt Cas slide out of bed.
"I will. See you Monday." Cas whispered back kissing his mate before he left for training.
The day had gone normally for Cas. They had class for a few hours, then they ran a few miles, worked out. Had lunch and a resting period then they were going to finish out the swim training. It was time to do everything with full equipment.
Jack had been complaining of a headache all day but knew the Captain wouldn't let him sit out on anything so he pushed on. He and Cas were towards the back of the line as usual.
"Are you sure you're okay? You don't look so good." Cas said noticing Jack getting kind of pale.
"Yeah." Jack sighed. "Just a headache."
Cas just nodded but kept an eye on him through out the trainings. The exercise they were doing was to bring the CPR dummy up from the bottom of the pool. They had untie the dummy and bring it up and preform CPR for a full 2 minutes before it was the next person's turn.
Alison finished and it was Jacks turn once the dummy was tied back up. Jack walked towards the edge of the pool to wait for the whistle. Cas could see Jack swaying a bit and was about to pull Jack back and explain to the captain when the whistle blew.
Jack dove in and swam to the bottom and started to untie the dummy when he felt a sharp pain in his head and his vision went black.
Back at the top Cas was watching every move his friend made and when Jack stopped moving Cas' heart started racing. "Captain. Something's not right." Cas mentioned.
"He's just trying to figure out the knot he's fine." one of the officers answered before the captain.
"No, he'd have it untied by now." Cas argued.
"Novak, we are watching him everything is fine." the same officer argued back.
Cas shook his head and looked at the Captain who was about to send the diver in after Jack. "I'm sorry captain but I have to do something." Cas said and dove in after Jack before anyone could say anything.
"Novak!" the captain yelled but it was too late.
Cas pushed himself to swim as fast as he could. He wrapped an arm around Jack and used his free arm and legs two swim back to the top. Letting out a gasp once he broke surface Cas swam to the edge where the captain and two other officers were waiting.
They pulled Jack out of the water and Alison helped Cas out of the pool. "He's not breathing." Cas said trying to get to his friend.
"Call an ambulance!" the captain yelled and started removing Jack's vest to perform CPR. Everything was happening in slow motion it felt like to Cas.
EMT's came running in with a gurney and loaded Jack up. One of the EMT's jumped up on Jack and continued the CPR while the other one pulled them out to the ambulance.
"Everyone to their rooms!" the captain yelled, "Novak come here please."
Watching the door close behind the EMT's and Jack, Cas startled when the captain yelled for him.
"Yes, sir?" Cas asked.
"You're pretty close with Kline. Was he acting different today?"
"Yes sir. He's complained of a headache all day. I tried to get him to tell you so he could sit out but he refused." Cas explained trying to stay calm.
"Alright. I'm sorry son, but I don't think he's going to make it." Captain said softly and patted Cas' shoulder. "Go on to your room and pack your things. I'm cancelling training for the rest of the weekend and next weekend."
Cas just nodded and quickly made his way to his room and got out of his wet clothes and put on his clothes he had packed for Monday.
Dean had just put Henry down for a nap and was going to start cleaning up when his phone rang. Seeing it was Cas calling his heart fluttered. "Hey baby? Have a break?" Dean answered.
"Dean?" Cas voice broke.
Hearing how upset Cas was, Dean's smile quickly faded. "Cas? What's wrong?"
"I-I need you to come get me." Cas responded, trying to keep it together. "Please hurry, but please be safe." he said and hung up the phone.
"Cas? Cas?!" Dean yelled when he heard the faint click.
He grabbed his keys and his jacket and ran up stairs. "SAM! SAMMY!"
Sam ran down the stairs, "what? Dean what's wrong?!" he asked seeing how freaked out his brother was.
"I don't know I need to get Cas. Watch Henry!" Dean yelled already halfway out the door.
Cas gathered his things, along with Jack's things and made his way to the front room to wait for Dean.
"Novak. I was just coming for you." the captain said.
"I gathered Jack's things." Cas said handing them over.
"Thank you." the captain said, "I'm sorry son, but Jack didn't make it. I called the hospital. Their best guess was an aneurism."
Cas just stared at the captain. "Wh-what?" he whispered and jumped out when the front doors busted open.
"Cas?!" Dean yelled and ran over. "What's going on, what's wrong?" he asked franticly looking over his mate, looking for any injuries.
Cas just looked at him with watery eyes. "Take me home please." he whispered as a few tears fell.
"Of course. Come on." Dean said softly and wrapped an arm around Cas' shoulders.
Once they were in the Impala Dean asked again. "Baby please tell me what's wrong. You're scaring me."
Cas let out a sob and turned to his mate. Dean slid across the seat and pulled Cas into his arms. "J-jack is." Cas started to sob harder. "Jack died. He died Dean!" he sobbed and Dean started crying himself.
"Oh my god. What happened?" Dean asked but hugged Cas tighter. Cas just shook his head and clung to his mate. "Shhhh.. It's alright." Dean soothed and let Cas cry. Dean didn't let him go until Cas stopped and had calmed down.
"Are you okay?" Dean asked and slid back over and drove home when Cas nodded.
"He complained that he had a headache all day." Cas said so quietly, Dean almost missed it. "I tried convincing him to have the captain let him sit out of training today but he wouldn't listen to me."
Dean encouraged Cas to continue, "he dove in the water and I watched him. I watched him stop moving and no one was doing anything so I dove in after him." Cas sniffed. "I pulled him up and they did CPR and the paramedics took him away."
"Cas. I'm so, so sorry." Dean said and grabbed Cas' hand. Dean pulled into the driveway when Cas didn't move, Dean got out and opened the passenger door. "Come on." he whispered and held out his hand.
Cas took it and followed Dean inside and down the stairs. "Dean! Cas! What happened?" Sam asked once he saw the boys come down the stairs.
"Why don't you go get in the shower. I'll be in, in a minute okay?" Dean said softly and Cas just nodded, dropping his bag at the end of the couch.
"What happened?" Sam asked again.
"There was an accident Sammy. Cas' friend Jack died at training today." Dean explained.
"Holy shit. Is Cas going to be ok?"
"After a while he will." Dean said and pulled Sam into a hug.
"Well, I heard Henry waking up when you came downstairs. I'll take him upstairs for a while and let you deal with Cas." Sam said.
"Thanks Sam." Dean said and made his way to the bathroom.
Dean's heart broke when he walked in. Cas was sitting in the shower with his knees to his chest while the water just dumped on his head. He quickly shed his clothes and opened the shower door. "Jesus Christ Cas! This water is freezing!" Dean yelped when the cold water hit his skin.
He quickly adjusted the water and kneeled by Cas. "Hey." he said softly and lifted Cas' head by his chin. "Don't shut me out." Dean said and helped Cas to his feet and grabbed his shampoo.
"Tilt your head back a bit, you're taller than me." Dean grinned and when Cas followed instructions he began massaging the shampoo on his head. Once Cas' hair was washed Dean grabbed the body wash and rubbed it into Cas' skin and helped rinse it off.
Dean shut the water off and grabbed his towel and did a quick wipe down, before wiping Cas off, who was still in a 'zombie' state. He ushered Cas to their bedroom and pulled a pair of boxers on before doing the same for Cas and got him under the covers.
Dean turned to leave when Cas spoke. "Don't leave. Please." he begged.
"I'll be right back. I promise." Dean said grabbing his robe before running upstairs to make some tea and grabbed some cookies.
"I thought these might help." Dean said once he came back in the room. He set the tea and cookies on Cas' nightstand before taking his robe off.
"Thank you." Cas whispered and grabbed the tea. Once he was finished he pulled Dean as close as possible and laid down finally falling asleep.
