Dean slept lightly, making sure he'd wake up if Cas did. So, when Cas started jerking in his sleep, Dean woke up right away. Cas started jerking more and more and started mumbling, "Cas, wake up. It's just a dream." Dean said and gently shook his shoulders.
Cas woke with a gasp and shot up in bed sweat starting to drip off his forehead. "Dean?"
"I'm here." Dean said while turning Cas' head. "I'm right here." he whispered and his heart broke when he saw fresh tears start to well in his mates eyes.
"So it wasn't a dream." Cas whispered.
"I'm afraid not." Dean responded and pulled Cas in for a hug, making sure Cas' nose was in Dean's neck and put off as much of soothing omega scent into the air.
He held onto Cas until he calmed down when Charlie's voice yelled out. "Helloooo Dean?"
"Shit. I forgot Charlie was coming over." Dean gasped.
They scrambled to get dressed and met Charlie in the living room. "Cas? What are you doing here?"
"Charlie, I'm sorry but I need to cancel our plans." Dean said.
"Of course. Is everything okay?" She asked still eyeing Cas who just disappeared into the bathroom.
"Don't bother him, but there was an accident. Remember his friend Jack?" Dean asked. When Charlie nodded, Dean continued, "he died during training today."
"What the fuck?!" Charlie gasped. "How?!"
"I guess he had an aneurism under the water. Cas dove in and pulled him out." Dean explained.
"Oh my god. Poor Cas. Poor Jack. Okay, well, I'll go back home but let me know if you guys need anything." Charlie said. "I love you Cas!" she yelled before going up the stairs.
They had turned the tv on to a random movie for background noise. Dean was sitting at the end of the couch while Cas laid down with his head in Dean's lap and enjoyed the feeling of Dean's fingers running through his hair.
The boys stayed like that for a while before they heard Gabe's voice on the stairs. "Cassie?!"
Cas shot up and turned around, "Gabe? What are you doing here?" he asked.
"I just heard what happened. Are you okay?" Gabe asked pulling his baby brother in for a hug.
"No. But what's done is done." Cas mumbled into Gabe's shirt.
"How'd you hear about it?" Dean asked.
"It's on the local news." Gabe explained.
Gabe stayed long enough they realized it was almost supper time. "I can order pizza if you want, or do you want me to head home?" Gabe asked.
"Please stay." Cas said softly.
"Of course. Let me go get food though and I'll be back." He said patting Cas' shoulder on his way back.
"I should probably go relieve Sam of Henry duty." Dean said, feeling a little guilty he left him with Sam for so long.
"Fuck. I didn't even think of Henry." Cas said and put his head in his hands.
"Hey. It's alright, you've had a traumatic day." Dean replied.
Monday morning rolled around and Cas was still off. All weekend he just went through the motions and didn't really talk. When they pulled into the school parking lot Sam got out but Dean drove off before Cas could get out as well.
"What are you doing?" Cas asked.
"I'm taking you to Dr. Hansen." Dean said not bothering to look over. Cas stayed quiet, Dean expected him to argue about it.
"No arguments?" Dean asked sneaking a glance over at Cas who just stared out the window.
"No." he said softly.
"I just want to start off by saying I'm sorry for what happened Cas." Dr. Hansen started off. "This was a pretty traumatizing event to witness."
Cas just nodded. "I should have stopped him. I should have tried harder to get him to sit out."
"Cas, even if you did convince him to sit out, he would have had that aneurism in his sleep or the next morning. You can't blame yourself." Dr. Hansen said.
Cas sniffled a couple of times. "I know but, I can't help feel that way."
"It's going to be hard. Have you talked to his family?" Dr. Hansen asked.
When Cas shook his head no Dr. Hansen asked why. "I-I I don't know to be honest. I know his funeral is tomorrow morning. I know Dean and I are going, but I'm afraid to see his family." Cas explained.
"Because you think they'll blame you." Dr. Hansen stated. Cas nodded and grabbed a tissue. "Castiel. It was not your fault, do you understand me? There is nothing you could have done." When Cas started crying Dr. Hansen asked if he'd like him to go get Dean.
"No. I've cried enough. He doesn't need to see anymore." Cas said clearing his throat a couple times.
"Cas. He's not going to think any less of you if he see's you cry." Dr. Hansen stated.
"I know, I know… I just need to be the strong one."
It was close to lunch time by time Cas finally came out of therapy. Dean had fallen asleep in the chair and jumped when Cas shook him awake.
"What?! Who? Oh, how'd it go?" Dean said once he realized where he was.
"Fine." Cas said his voice thick from crying so much. "I guess I had a lot more on my mind. Sorry for making you wait so long."
"It's alright. I didn't mean to fall asleep." Dean said while stretching. "I say we go get McDonald's then go back to school." Dean grinned and nudged Cas with his shoulder.
"I can live with that." Cas grinned.
The rest of the day went by too slow for Cas' liking. So, when the final bell rang he let out a sigh and went to meet up with everyone before heading to practice.
"I know the play isn't for 2 and half more months but we need to kick it in gear people!" Mrs. Rosen said before practice started. "I want to start with the opening scene on the beach, Cas, Jess get in position. Dean, how is the scenery coming along?" she asked.
"Good, I've got the beach just about ready, it just needs a few finishing touches, everything else is progressing smoothly."
"Good! Now, action!" Mrs. Rosen yelled.
"I'm going back to Australia; I might never see you again." Jess started off, barely looking at the script.
"Don't. Don't talk that way, Sandy." Cas replied.
"But it's true! I've just had the best summer of my life, and now I have to go away. it isn't fair." Jess acted upset.
"Perfect! I love it!" Mrs. Rosen yelled. "Let's move to first day of school. I need all the 'T birds on stage please!"
The ran through a few different scenes before Mrs. Rosen called it for the day. "Alright. Great run guys! I'll see you tomorrow."
"It was defiantly quiet with out Henry here today." Sam mentioned on the way to the Impala.
"Yeah, but kind of nice. I'm glad Bobby agreed to watch him til we're done from now on." Cas said throwing his bag on the floor of the Impala.
"It is but I feel guilty." Dean said starting up the engine.
The boys got dressed for the funeral in silence. Dean knew Cas didn't want to talk about it so he left him be. He did grab Cas' arm and pull him down for a soft kiss before they went upstairs.
"What was that for?" Cas asked.
"You seemed like you needed it." Dean shrugged.
Cas gave Dean directions to the church Jack's funeral was taking place and it took a while for Dean to find a parking spot.
"Will you just park somewhere?" Cas asked after Dean passed 3 spots.
"I'm not parking baby close enough to other cars where their doors might fuck up the paint." Dean huffed pulling into a spot at the end of the parking lot.
The walked in and immediately saw Alison and her mom. "Cas, Dean, over here!" She whispered and patted the empty spot next to her and they quickly slid in the pew.
"I'm glad to see you with out the boot, Dean." Alison teased.
"I'm glad to be out of the boot." Dean said.
The funeral started shortly after the boys arrived. Dean noticed Cas and Alison had grabbed each other's had at one point. He wasn't mad or jealous, he knew it meant nothing but still grabbed Cas' other had who squeezed it in return.
When it was their turn to leave, Cas saw Jack's family by the doors, thanking everyone for coming. By the time it was their turn Cas' heart started jack hammering in his chest. "Mrs. Kline, I'm so sorry for your loss. Jack had become one of my best fr-freinds." Cas said and choked up on the last word.
"You must be Castiel." Mrs. Kline said and yanked Cas into her arms. "Jack spoke highly of you. He didn't have many friends here but he thought of you as his best friend." she whispered in his ear and that's when Cas lost it. He started sobbing again and clung onto Jack's mother.
"I'm so sorry. I-I." Cas sobbed.
"Shhh. It's not your fault honey." Mrs. Kline soothed and let out a few tears of her own.
Dean stepped forward and gently tapped Cas' shoulder. "Come on babe, we're holding up the line." he said softly. Cas stood up and wiped his face. "I'm sorry for your loss ma'am. I'm Dean, Castiel's mate." Dean said and shook Mrs. Kline's hand.
Friday rolled around and Cas couldn't be more grateful for a weekend off. They had the camping trip meeting after school, then play practice. After that he was free to do nothing at all.
The meeting was being held in Bobby's room since it was the biggest. Dean, Cas and Charlie sat at a table while everyone else spread out and a few parents stood against the walls.
"Alright calm down." Bobby said shushing everyone. "It's time to plan the annual senior camping trip. You will be assigned tent partners so I don't wanna hear any groaning."
"If you have an issue with your tent partner please come to me or Ms. Barnes." Bobby said handing out the partner sheets. "We do need a couple parents to help chaperone."
"I'll chaperone." Mary pipped up and signed the sheet.
"HAHA Winchester is bringing his mommy!" a random alpha laughed.
"You'll be laughing when you get hurt and my mommy has to fix your boo boo." Dean fired back and the alpha shut up. He looked back at his list of assigned tent partners. He knew he wouldn't get to share a tent with Cas but it still stung a bit when he saw he was sharing a tent with Garth and Aaron.
Charlie on the other hand was pissed. "I am not sharing a tent with bimbo 1 and bimbo 2." Meaning Lisa and Becky.
"I'm in your boat Charlie." Cas groaned and saw he was sharing a tent with Jordan Mitchel and Ben Jacobs, two jock alphas.
"Oh well, you have until the end of April to prepare yourselves." Dean mentioned. After the meeting ended the 3 went to the auditorium.
